Book Description
Brian Jones life was a David vs. Goliath. Young, petite, and naïve, his Goliath was the Rolling Stones money machine. Unlike the Bible, Brian lost his life. This book levels the battlefield by telling what happened to the band’s founder. Written from Brian’s POV, the Stones rise to stardom is chronicled, ending with British authorities lack to properly investigate the bi-sexual bandleader’s death at 27.
Brian recalls being an incest victim, homeless at age 16 and forced into prostitution. Regardless, with extreme talent, sexuality, and imagination he led the band he picked, taught and named to glory. His vision was to bring world music to the Stones catalog; the band declined—content to crank out mundane sounds as long as records sold.
After a fight over musical direction Brian left the band planning to start anew and take the Rolling Stones name with him. Three weeks later he drowned in his swimming pool. Brian’s tale of death threats and witness accounts recount what actually happened.

BRIAN JONES...ANOTHER JFK?.......2007-09-20
I just read a grand review of this book that appears on Vintage Rock www.vintagerock.com.bjones_book.aspx in which the reviewer compares Brian's killing to the conspiracy behind JFK's assassination. What I find most interesting is the complete quiet we hear coming from the British Isles when so many are currently presenting clues and evidence surrounding Brian's death.
Even though Ms. Shepherd's book offers compelling facts relating to his death, she leaves out another suspicious death--that of Graham Bond who would've made a fantastic witness to talk about the threatening phone call Brian received at his "hideaway" only two days before his death. While the author does a dramatic job of re-enacting the events of Bond accepting the phone threat on Brian's behalf, she fails to mention that Bond "accidentally" fell under a train not long thereafter. Before he could personally testify about what he knew. Just as with witnesses who were willing to testify about JFK's assassination, many who were willing to testify about Brian's death also either suddenly disappeared or suddenly died! Coincidence? Think about it.
Lonesome Dove.......2007-09-16
Since I learned this book is supposed to be written from Brian's POV I don't understand why some complain that the author only focuses on Brian's good qualities and doesn't put him down for all the horrible deeds and nasty pranks he was known to have committed against others. I got it right off. Since Brian is talking about himself here, he like any of us wouldn't be sitting down (or standing up LOL) talking badly about himself.
He probably couldn't see all his faults especially since those nasty pranks were mostly committed during his up's and down's mood swings, when he didn't have much control over what he was doing. None of us sees ourselves as others do, and Brian was hurting over losing the friendship and camaraderie of his band mates but he couldn't understand where he had turned them off. Also none of them believed his many ailments that caused him to miss performances and rehearsals. The other Stones thought he was just being a cry baby or lazy but he gave it his best shot. It just wasn't good enough for the healthy ones who couldn't sympathize with his predicament.
In reading this story I got to thinking of Brian Jones as a beautiful Lonesome Dove, bleeding from the inside and not knowing how to get the help and unquestioning love he so badly needed.
WHAT A RIDE!.......2007-09-06
I'm part of a R&B band myself and got to meet Mick and the rest back in the day. So I try making time to read memoirs and such when I get the time. I've not written any reviews before but this story really caught me up. The book took so many twists and turns different than the rest out there that sometimes all stumble on each other with the same info.
I only wish this book would've gone into the story and testimony of Brian's murder earlier. That was the part that fascinated me. Not to say I want to believe it. But it for sure has more proof than anything I've seen before. All the facts come together and I hate to say that even though I don't want to believe what this story says happened, I can't find anything to prove it didn't happen.
I got to talking with others about this who say they heard similar storys for years but never saw it all laid out so totally. We'd like to see this turned into a film. Not like Stoned that is whitewash, but if this book is made into a movie as its written then we'd have something to watch for sure.
I only wonder why the Brits don't want to open the case. There's to much out there to ignore but hey that's on their heads.
CONNECT THE DOTS............2007-09-05
I usually enjoy a good old fashioned murder mystery and decided upon this story for my next unsolved whodunit. I wasn't interested in the history of the Rolling Stones or their music per se but found the idea, that one of their own had been possibly murdered at the behest of some of their own, intriguing to say the least.
Any reader interested in true crime will find the lady author's last 3 chapters plus 3 part epilogue very enlightening; somewhat reminiscent of Agatha Christie. As I read her results, I began to do research myself into each aspect of the crime that was brought up. Amazingly I found there is much evidence out there if one takes the time to actually look for it in press releases, actual testimony plus word-of-mouth tales swapped as to what actually happened to Mr. Jones at the time of his death and shortly thereafter.
It is mind-boggling that British authorities did not and still have not seriously investigated what was flagrantly a murder for hire. I located old magazine articles (and some fairly new) that corroborate a majority of what Ms. Shepherd attests to in her book. I found interesting also the fact that fans of Brian Jones have so viciously attacked her regarding claims of his not-so-well hidden sexual preference and drug use. All that pales in comparison to the fact he was obviously murdered in a most heinous manner by those laughingly hired to protect him!
I cannot understand why more focus isn't placed on what the meat `n potatoes of this book actually is: proof positive that Brian was purposely done away with and afterwards his prized possessions either callously burned in a bonfire (which again British authorities apparently turned a blind eye into investigating) or hauled off by both his band mates and his killers. That's where the reader needs to focus and not on who kissed whom, male or female, or whether Brian was still heavily imbibing drugs and alcohol at the time of his drowning.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy connecting the dots and seeing for themselves that the murder of Brian Jones remains mainly a major unrecognized and overlooked cold case crime. For anyone who likes to see justice served we should ban together and demand a complete, honest investigation into this killing.
STEWED & KEEFED.......2007-08-31
The honeymoon between Sir Mick and Keith apparently is at its end. Fragile nerves and high tensions have reached their peak and Keef is lashing out indiscriminately. His latest target is once again Brian Jones-the 63 year old Stone finds the band's former leader easy prey since the dead are hardly ever known to fight back. He believes he'll have a better chance of winning the battle of words against a ghost rather than take Mick on full force.
Oddly the open wound growing between Mick and Keith comes at a time when the author of Straight from the Heart is ready to announce the release of Brian's audiotapes. Word is she's finally received permission from the "keeper of the flame" for all these many years-who's mainly led a reclusive lifestyle since Brian's murder.
As part of the British rock scene during the late Sixties to early Seventies, I'd heard rumors flying that Brian had a hidden stash of tapes he'd recorded. We all figured they were only of music he'd put together during his stay at Cotchford. Now it appears that not only music was being composed while he lived the life of a solitary man, but that he had recorded his memoirs. Quite a feat for someone whom the Stones insisted was too incapacitated due to drugs and drinking to play guitar.
In my humble opinion I believe the author did a gargantuan job in re-enacting Brian's life in such an authentic and often tongue-in-cheek manner.

Suave, sophisticated Stone Barrington is a hero destined for the big screen. (Since Cary Grant is dead, Stone will have to be played by Bruce Willis, if he can keep his smirk under control.) He's certainly got the trappings: the Armani tuxedo too well-tailored to reveal the gun beneath the drape, the sexy sports cars, the beautiful women who never fail to throw themselves at him, the confident familiarity with a complicated wine list or French menu. And he's got friends in high places, which helps when you're looking for a beautiful woman who made a big impression on the slightly nerdy but nice software billionaire who hires Barrington to find her.
Between bedding the billionaire's chef in Palm Beach, hiding from the homicidal Mafia princess he almost married in Italy, and playing games with a Hollywood beauty whose young son may or may not be his very own child, Stone hardly has time to do the job he's been hired for. But when he does, he discovers that the object of his search is still another ex-lover, a woman he thought had been executed on a Caribbean island three years ago. All these women, and all these adventures, plus Stone's old pal Dino, a New York cop, will be familiar to readers of Woods's other Stone Barrington thrillers. This one has Woods's trademark narrative punch, solid pacing, and glossy, brand-name panache. If Judith Krantz wrote thrillers, this is what she'd turn out. But don't let that stop you. Cold Paradise is the perfect book for a hot day in the hammock or a long plane ride to a ritzy resort destination. The only real surprise is why Stone Barrington hasn't made it to the big (or small) screen yet. --Jane Adams

"Woods delivers his most riveting and glamorous Barrington novel yet." (Press Journal, Vero Beach, FL)
Customer Reviews:
Too Many Ex-Loves........2007-06-10
Stuart Woods serves up so many "ex-dishes" for Stone Barrington to handle it is difficult to remember "who was who" or why they were important. Somehow, the story, which has a good premise gets lost in all of the previous encounters and Stone becomes a celluloid copy of his former self without the time to build the suspense necessary for a satisfying thriller.
The image of Stone running around Palm Beach in Vance Calder's castoff clothes doesn't fit the suave Stone, whose taste and means gives him access to the finest of New York's haberdasheries. One kept hoping he'd find a charity outlet for their disposal.
If like me, you enjoy the Barrington character, you'll keep reading to the end. A parody is good for relaxation, but we all await the next installment of Stone's adventures.

Cold Paradise review.......2006-11-09
Typically enjoyable Stone Barrington saga that draws you in immediately with just the right amount of action and love interest to make you forget whatever irritating problems you may have in your own life - great escapism. I've never read a Stone Barrington book I didn't enjoy.
Enjoyable listen!.......2006-05-29
I enjoy Stuart Wood's Stone Barrington novels and this was another fun ride. I have to wonder about the on again/off again relationship with Arrington Calder, but then Stone seems to be hung up on that wacko woman. Of course he's such a whore, he'll sleep with anyone and he's even slept with a murderess...you'll enjoy this one and finally catch the criminal from previous books.
got me hooked quickly.......2005-01-13
what can I say about Woods that I haven't already said? Once again he builds on what happened before, takes it further and makes it better...this book would be great on its own, but you really have to read the Barrington series in order to to get the full effect of each entry in the series...
I don't want to get into the story because I hate to ruin the experience for anyone who hasn't read it yet..but if it's been awhile since you last checked in on Stone Barrington, you should pay him a visit and read this book.
Awesome.......2004-11-12
Stuart Woods always keeps you guessing and Stone Barrington is always an interesting person, who always finds himself in trouble in work and in love.

Customer Reviews:
Quick read.......2007-08-17
When people start showing up dead with two bullet holes to the chest with no rhyme or reason, Jesse Stone is on the case. It appears there is a serial killer or killers in Paradise and it is up to Jesse to find them - before they find him; because it seems Jesse is next on their list.
A subplot involving the rape of a teenage girl by three boys adds a bit of depth to the plot.
As mentioned - this was a very quick read. I actually read half of Trouble in Paradise (Jesse Stone) and all of Death in Paradise (Jesse Stone), all of "Stone Cold" and a good bit of Sea Change (Jesse Stone) yesterday. These are very quick reads and difficult to put down once started. Not to be missed for the fans of Robert Parker and police procedurals!
Disappointing........2007-06-20
I was disappointed. This was by far the least of the Parker novels I have read. The humor was weak and this is usually a strong point. The characters were super-thin, not that they ever have much depth. The plot is straight forward but not very exciting. Pretty dull stuff for Parker.
Action in Paradise.......2007-02-10
Excellent Book. Typical intriguing Robert Parket mystery. Sex, murder and mystery. In this there is an emotional subplot and a main plot with occurrences very close to Jesse's vest. This is another detective murder mystery filled with intelligent clues, emotional moments and the reader is left wondering what's next between Jenn and Jesse?
Fast, easy read.......2006-07-15
A plot that's good enough to captivate, and a book that's short enough to satisfy. A very entertaining mystery.
Can't wait for the next one.............2006-04-10
I've read all the Jesse Stone series books and haven't been disappointed yet. Once you start reading it's hard to put down. Always great characters and plots...... I would recommend this series to all.........

Book Description
He's wrestled under many names, "Stunning" Steve Austin, The Ringmaster, he even wrestled for a time under his own name, Steve Williams. But to fans he is and will always be Stone Cold Steve Austin. The wrestler with the f-u attitude, the working-class guy who stood up his boss, a multimillionaire, and told him where he could put it. His quick wit and colorful use of language combined with his everyman character captured the hearts of fans worldwide and rewrote the dynamics of professional wrestling forever.
Steve grew up in a small town in Texas, one of four boys, who were fondly called by their parents the "Williams gang." Always a fan of wrestling, Steve seized the chance to study wrestling at a school in Dallas. His ability to take the bumps and hard falls required by his new profession, and his never-say-die attitude, connected him with the fans and his fellow wrestlers. His capricious firing by the WCW, World Championship Wrestling®, lead to his being hired by World Wrestling Entertainment.
However, it was Steve's own ability inside the ring and his quick-witted responses that led to his becoming one of the most popular WWE Superstars of all time. With the creation of the Stone Cold character, Steve's popularity expanded exponentially. It seemed nothing could stop the Texas Rattlesnake, except himself. In 2001 Steve's life seemed to spiral out of control and he walked away from it all. Now, with his triumphant return to the world of professional wrestling, he is finally ready to tell his story, his way.
The Stone Cold Truth is an unvarnished take on his life, his loves, and his days as a wrestler told in a way that only he could, and you know it's the truth " 'cause Stone Cold says so!"
Customer Reviews:
Candid as...?.......2007-03-08
A nice read, but the comments from his parents and JR don't really add anything to the story. Also, the story becomes a bit repetitive, with Austin breezing through subjects such as his divorces, him being seperated from his children simply by stating he "loves them to death", and he seems to respect everyone, which is not quite what I expected.
The problem is, that all wrestling books will now be compared to Foley's publications, with the result being that 9 out of 10 won't compare favorably. It's a nice read, but don't expect anything radical, apart from his views at the end of the book, about the state wrestling is in.
It wouldn't have hurt Austin to be a litte more outspoken...
Not Mick Foley, But Not The Rock Either.......2007-02-08
This book is at it's best when Steve is being himself instead of the Stone Cold character. Unlike The Rock's book, this one is a bit more honest and not in character every moment. Still not written with as much honesty as Mick Foley's bios (Have A Nice Day & Foley Is Good and coming soon Hardcore Diaries). JR (Jim Ross) helps out mostly at the end of chapters and his insight is very helpful. Without JR this book would be a 2 or 3 stars. Not too much is said that isn't common knowledge, so I recommend this book for the more die-hard Stone Cold fans. This won't appeal to mainstream non-wrestling fans the way Mick Foley's books did.
Stone Cold Truth.......2006-11-02
My son has been reading this book for his college reading course. Although his teacher is not a wrestling fan, my son found the book to be filled with interesting information about Steve Austin's upbringing and family values that were enlightening. The book shows that Steve Austin is more than his persona that he projected during his wrestling career.
The book is recommended for any fan of WWE wrestling and is an interesting read.
Ira J. Bromley
ENTERTAINING.......2006-08-13
STONE COLD DOES A NICE JOB DESCRIBING HIS LIFE AND EXPERIENCES IN PRO WRESTLING. I ENJOYED THE EARLY PARTS CONCERNING HIS FAMILY AND FOOTBALL, BUT THE MEAT OF THIS BOOK IS HIS CAREER. STONE COLD WAS QUITE A CHARACTER AND MADE ME LAUGH MANY TIMES. I BELIEVE HE WAS ONE OF MOST POPULAR AND ENTERTAINING WRESTLERS OF HIS TIME. INJURIES, BURNOUT AND DIVORCE DID HIM IN. HE DOESN'T SEEM LIKE A BAD GUY, HOPEFULLY HE WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT HIS DRINKING. FOR ALL WRESTLING FANS.
MORE NEEDED........2006-05-02
First, I truly believe that Steve Austins character helped win the Monday night war against WCW. I doubt that without him the WWF as it was named at that time would have prevailed. This book could have been at least twice as long. Mr. Williams could have gone much deeper into his personal life and the wrestling industry. Granted, much of what he said about the business part could be found in a multitude of various wrestling magazines. Perhaps, he was rushed into finishing this book to take advantage of his height in popularity? Many of the chapters were oddly short, and left you wanting him to go deeper. The book did get better as you read on. Yet, you got the feeling that the author was holding back. This was far better than the Rocks, and Shawn Michaels books. But, not nearly as good as Mick Foleys or Ric Flairs. Perhaps, in its next printing he will add more to it? All in all I liked it.

Book Description
Cold Paradise:
Allison Manning, the beautiful and enigmatic woman Stone defended against a murder charge in Dead in the Water, mysteriously reappears to request his help with a set of problems she has never resolved. But before he can dig into this latest case, he comes face to face again with Arrington Calder, the one woman who still holds a key to his affections. Stone and his partner, Dino, comb the glittering streets of Palm Beach and begin to suspect that more than one person might be after Allison: one so clever he manages never to show his face, but even more frightening, another man everybody has long forgotten.
The Short Forever:
Stone's new client, John Bartholomew, asks Stone to fly to London in search of a young woman whom he suspects has taken up with a mysterious character. Bartholomew asks Stone to see what he can find to discredit the man, Cabot. What Stone finds is more bizarre than he had expected. The woman in question isn't related to Bartholomew in quite the way he had implied. And it appears that Bartholomew and Cabot, who once worked together on a secretive assignment, now have very different versions of what went wrong. When Stone himself is implicated in a shocking double murder, he and his partner, Dino, know they have stepped into a strange case unlike any other.

SLP is Stone Cold Guilty.......2007-04-15
Excellent research and diligence in reporting. I watched entire case on CourtTV and Ms. Dillon filled in all the blanks. Great care is given to Laci and her family.
TRASH.......2007-01-13
This book is the WORST I've ever read. Who does this author think she is? As far as she's concerned the prosecution was incompetent, the defense was incompetent, every lawyer who spoke in the media about the case was ignorant........ She admittedly learned everything she knows about the law online yet she knows more than absolutely ANYONE about this case and how it should have been conducted. She used the murders of a lovely young woman and her child to make a buck and it's dispicable!
REVIEW OF Garabage.......2006-08-13
Oh my sweet Lord, I cannot believe Amazon carries this trash. How sad for the readers into being tricked. I am burning this piece of trash .... That's too good for it.
Bored Housewives Love It.......2006-08-11
This book is for bored housewives, Internet addicts and crime hags who followed the Peterson trial hanging on every detail like a desert rat looking for a drink.
I thought I'd hate it, but Dillon offers an effective overview of the case, the slimy defense team, and of Peterson himself, who is the poster boy of putz.
Overall, it's pretty entertaining and I appreciated some of the trial details and armchair analysis.
A surprising treat. And who are these whack jobs with the weird reviews? More bored housewives?
This blook sucked!.......2006-08-10
This blook was a pure waste of money. My unborn child literally yanked on his umbilical cord in an effort to get me to stop trying to read it. It was pure torture for both of us and I eventually tossed it in the trash (after the cat vomited on it- which was a sign from above, IMHO.)
Who I really feel bad for are the blind readers who will confuse the "author's" lack of ability to construct a sentence with a cruel practical joke that someone rearranged their braille dots.
Oh and the "author" is a nasty b*tch!

Book Description
Recent plays from "one of the more daring young stylists working today" (David Cote, Time Out New York)
Adam Rapp's plays have captivated audiences across the country with their unflinching explorations of the good, the bad, and the ugly in America's heartland and cities. Gathered here are three of his latest works: Faster, in which two young grifters try to strike a deal with the devil during the hottest summer on record; Finer Noble Gases, a lament for a band of arrested thirty-year-olds slouching toward adulthood amid East Village decay; and the Off-Broadway hit Stone Cold Dead Serious. An honest, strange, and humorous look at a blue-collar family struggling to survive in the face of disability and addiction, and the seemingly surreal lengths their teenage son will go to save them from themselves, the play prompted Bruce Weber to rave in The New York Times: "Rapp is very gifted, and, even rarer, he has something to say . . . Stone Cold Dead Serious [is] brave, compassionate, and . . . breathtakingly moving. It is the work of a playwright who is forging a real voice . . . Its rendering of the shared language of loved ones illustrates how families can remain intimate even when they are in shards. Its depiction of a working-class America that is unable to dream of anything beyond enduring is as sincerely sad a commentary on our culture as I've seen in recent memory. And its fear for young people is, unfortunately, deeply convincing."

Stone Westmoreland had an eye for the ladies. And charm that never failed. He was an experienced player who played for keeps. So who would have guessed that prim and proper Madison Winters could rattle his nerves without even trying? She had him feeling all protective, and all sexed up, too. Before he knew it, Stone had volunteered to help Madison find her mother, who'd gone missing in the mountains. Stone was willing to play the knight in shining armor, but only if it meant the hard days of trekking through the wilderness would result in the ultimate payoff - passion-filled nights under the Montana starlit sky with the delectable Miss Winters....

Too short of a story and a little rushed.......2007-10-07
But it's still a good story. I just hate because it's only 180 pages long. I think that's why I thought it was rushed. I don't believe that you can fall in love that fast in 2 days. You just met the man on the plane and then you're in love 2 days later. A little far fetched but it's all good. It's a Brenda Jackson novel that I'm glad to have in my collection.
Who Woulda Thought He Would Fall In Love..........2005-12-29
Brenda Jackson does it again with this book...Although it wasn't one of the best she has done, it is a good read! I love reading about the Westmoreland clan. I loved reading about Stone and how he falls in love with Madison. You should read (only if you have read the other books about the Westmoreland's).
Oh How Sweet Surrender Can Be.......2004-11-26
Brenda Jackson has definitely done it again. This is a long awaited continuation of those fabulous Westmoreland men. Stone Westmoreland, a writer who is going away to his uncle's mountain for a little R&R and to write his next story, sits next to Madison Winters on the plane flight. Ironically, Madison is also heading to the mountain, but unbeknowing they are both headed for the same destination. Madison is in search of her "wayward" mother, who decides to remain in Montana for a few weeks instead of returning to Boston. Has Stone's cold heart been melted by the lovely Miss Winters? Stone has said in the past that he will not become involved with a romantic interest, but has this flight changed everything?
Madison, also is not interested in starting a new love interest. After being slighted by her fiance' Madison has shunned any romantic notions. However, when she accidently touches Stone in the seat next to her, sparks definitely flies and Stone's coldness begin to melt.
There are several surprises in this story. Ms. Jackson has certainly kept us up to date on the Westmoreland family as well as the other twists involving the Westmoreland. I enjoyed this book and look forward to other stories continuing the Westmoreland saga. I know there is a "Storm" coming and I am anticipating it.
Definitely, keep writing, Ms. Jackson!
Trust Factor.......2004-11-01
Brenda Jackson writes an exciting story on how a young lady has to come to the realization that her mother has the right to fall in love and so does she. Madison Winters feels that her mother is acting out of sorts to only find her falling in love too while not realizing it. While Storm ensures himself that he had no plans on falling in love to only realize that when he set out to prove a point it only lead to the proven fact that true affection.
As Madson and Storm endure the challenge of each others love they
both must learn to trust again and when the turbulence of
relationships come about only their love can hold them together.
Love at first sight.......2004-10-10
It was predicted that the Westmoreland children would all find love at first sight. That is not going to be the case for avowed bachelor, Stone Westmoreland, in STONE COLD SURRENDER. In this fourth installment of the Westmoreland series, Stone is following in his Uncle Corey Westmoreland's footsteps--a bachelor to the end. Uncle Corey has an entire mountain to himself and has declared it off limits to women. Both men are affirmed bachelors until the Winters' women step into their lives.
After a very sensual take-off from Atlanta to Montana, Madison Winters meets Stone. In a very short time, the two realize an instant attraction that simmers on the edge of each one's consciousness. Madison, a schoolteacher from Boston, is on a mission to find her mom and bring her home or at the least find out what's gotten into her. Abby Winters is acting in a fashion very uncharacteristic of a widow and mother in her daughter's eye, and it is especially worrisome because a man is involved.
Stone becomes completely enchanted with Madison, but he doesn't want to admit it. He likes bachelorhood and doesn't want to make a serious commitment, or so he thinks. When he realizes that Madison is somewhat inexperienced in the feelings of love and passion, he makes it his business to guide her through the discovery while helping her to locate her mother. Once they find Abby, their perceptions about love and life may change considerably.
Silhouette novels were always a favorite of mine in my youthful days, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why I gave them up, especially, after reading STONE COLD SURRENDER. Brenda Jackson is a great romance writer. Montana is not the most romantic place that I can think of, but add a couple of sensual individuals and Ms. Jackson's writing abilities and you have a wonderful and heartwarming love story that leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling all over. I feel like a kid in a candy store having just discovered a new flavor.

Book Description
When the law won't work, you have to work the law...
The murderer stalking the quiet town of Warwick, Rhode Island in the late summer of 1989 was an unrepentant psychopath--"a living, breathing killing machine," in the words of a Boston Globe columnist. He butchered a family in their home--not far from the site where he had killed another woman two years earlier--just for the thrill, it seemed, of watching them die. When Craig Price was apprehended by police two weeks later, he grinned cheerfully and confessed to the crimes. He was tried and convicted, but sentenced to a mere five years imprisonment--the maximum penalty allowed by law. At the age of twenty-one he would be sent back to the streets and no one doubted he would kill again...unless drastic measures were taken.
A Call for Justice is the gripping true story of how a cop willing to put his career on the line, members of the victims' families, and other enraged citizens banded together and dedicated years of their lives to keeping a remorseless young killer behind bars. They would gain national media attention, enlist the aid of Rhode Island's attorney general, and even capture the ear of the President of the United States. Theirs is a cautionary tale of a flawed legal system ill-equipped to dispense true justice--and of a community's determination to see justice done, even if it meant twisting the law until it worked. When the law won't work, you have to work the law...

The Power Of The Public.......2001-08-15
As a fairly avid reader of true crime, I am used to the formula of "crime discovered - background of players - investigation/confession - court case - aftermath" so this was a different formula. The horrific, senseless slaughter of two women and a family by a kid barely in his teens is just the beginning as cop Ken Collins and his community mount a campaign to change the circumstances of how juvenile offenders are treated in Rhode Island. Released at age eighteen! Interesting is the side story of Collins' deterioration in his private life as he becomes consumed by his obsession to try and make it right for the memories of the victims. I also would have liked to have had a better sense of the victims themselves instead of the extensive description of the slayer and his life. The book is methodical and factual, not a "keep you up biting your nails and checking the locks" kind of read and occasionally becomes rather plodding at times. yet the story deserves to be told and I did finish it. I gave the book three stars, yet I give the town and the participants who worked toward keeping a killer behind bars a solid five.
Interesting true crime, but misses its mark..........2001-01-20
I was very surprised to see this book in a local book store. To my knowledge it is the first, and only, book written about the tragic murders committed by Craig Price in Warwick, RI when he was in his early teens. Mr. Price brutally murdered two young women and two young girls for no apparent reason(s). This book describes the brutality or "overkill" inflicted by Mr. Price, but focuses primarily on the efforts of the Rhode Island legal system to keep him in prison past his 18th birthday, as he was a juvenile when he perpetrated these totally hideous murders. I found the book a bit slow moving even though I am very familiar with the Price case. It is not the type of book that grabs one and keeps one reading into the wee hours. At times it tends to drag, in fact. Was the system manipulated in order to keep Mr. Price imprisoned? Without question, in my mind. Was this justified? Again, without any doubts. Mr. Price is a textbook anti-social personality disorder. To my knowledge as a mental health professional with 20+ years experience in the field, there is no treatment or "rehabilitation" for people like Mr. Price. At least no empirical evidence to support such a claim. Mr. Price could be the "poster child" for supporting the death penalty -- certainly he should never, ever be paroled as it is a given that he will once again engage in violent behavior. He deserves life without any possibility whatsoever of parole. Ms. Lang does an admiral job of outlining the positions of both sides, but her writing style can become "boring". Nevertheless she is to be commended for writing about this serial murder case and how it has influenced other states to enact legislation regarding juveniles who committ such horrific crimes. Mr. Price is scheduled to come up for parole in 2005, I believe, although his sentence, based on subsequent convictions for other offenses "should" keep him behind bars until 2018, when he will be approximately 44 years old. A frightening and sobering thought, one that all Rhode Islanders must never, ever forget about.

Memoirs of a Cold War Son.......2000-04-03
This is a wonderfully introspective book, written by the intellectually driven Prof. Post. There are similarities to `Remembrance of Things Past', by Marcel Proust. The obvious exceptions are Post's evident heterosexuality and the length of the works. Post is continually in search for his identity and his role in the world, which is apparently a dynamic of his life. The level of detail is at times a bit overwhelming, especially in his military sojourn in Germany, although this is also a crucial episode, not only in his life, but in the search for meaning of `the cold war son'. He has a most wonderful interaction with his close knit family and his constant search for the meaning of his mother's psychological collapse during and post WWII, appears to be a driving force in his search for the meaning of his life. This is truly a gripping rendition of a man's struggle with his own psychology and a glimpse of the world events surrounding his formative years of identity.
