Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-07-31

This book was wonderfully refreshing, it was nice to read a triple crown book that has positive people and not the normal "thug chicken head" that triple crown is notorious for. Tu-Shonda is a great writer, I have read all of her books and they are all great. The sequel is just as good as the first one Flipside of the Game. Keep up the good work.

4 out of 5 stars Did It Again.......2007-06-20

Both books are very good and kept me laughing. Don't sleep on Aunt Cookie and Uncle Boy again!! They make the book! Be sure to Read Flip Side of the Game first. You won't be disappointed. Keep it up girl! I just brought Ex-Factor can't wait to read! Looking good girl!! Until next time don't sleep on Tu-Shonda L. Whitaker

5 out of 5 stars The Bomb Diggity!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-10

I read both Flip Side of the Game and Game Over and I was lucky enought to have purchased them at the same time together because after reading Flip Side of the Game I would have been upset if I didn't have the sequel ready to begin reading. Both books were absolutely amazing. I love how the issues that they all dealt with in the book were real issues. I loved how one minute you were laughing hysterically and then crying the next but all in all I could not put the book down took me two days to read Game Over. Although Flip Side of the Game I read in 1 day I refused to go to sleep until I finished it!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loved this one too!.......2006-09-23

Both books are very good and kept me laughing out loud. Don't sleep! Read Flip Side of the Game first. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Felt and Emotional Rollercoaster.......2006-08-28

This book was a great continuation to Flip side of the Game. I also loved the fact that the cover reflected the title of both novels. This book was great and I wish to see the continuation of it in PartIII. Although it was hard to believe that the characters were in their 30's but never the less I was still entertained and I always hear that dumb b*tch alert with some of my friends. Vera had me rolling when she would say that about her girl friends. This was a good read.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate drills for champions.......2007-01-04

Even if you, like me, don't intend to be a champion pro (maybe an Am champion...?), these drills will improve your game for sure. Anyway they are the pro's drills. I've checked many other sources in books and DVDs and these are the most common drills advised to golf players. And no other source were so complete. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 becouse there are only drills. It could be completed with a swing overview, in order to make the drills more understandable. It's not there becouse the author has another book only on the 8 parts of the swing. But it worths the price.

5 out of 5 stars GOLF DIGEST'S ULTIMATE DRILL BOOK.......2005-09-29

AS HE ALWAYS DOES JIM MCLEAN DEMONSTRATES THAT HE KNOWS GOLF. HE KNOWS HOW TO FIX DEFICIENT GOLF SWINGS. THE DRILLS HE OFFERS MUST BE A BENEFIT TO EVERY GOLFER, BEGINNER AND PROFESSIONAL. BUY THIS BOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible for golfers who know the game.......2005-09-21

This book is for the real beginner as the title of the book is totally misleading

2 out of 5 stars So So.......2005-09-16

Just an ok book. Pictures are low quality. Would have expected better from Golf Digest and Jim Mclean. It is straight and to the point but make sure you at least have a solid working knowldge of all aspects of the game before considering this book. You can get much of the same information for free at various golf web sites. Not bad but not very clear in many regards.

5 out of 5 stars 120 Drills to Specifically Targeted to Swing Improve.......2004-09-06

One of golf's great teachers provides 120 of his best drills for all aspects of the game: driving, chipping, iron shots, putts, sand, as well as warmup and mental focus.

Each is accompanied by excellent two page format showing: problem, result, goal and practice procedure, with an accompanying photo.

There are just some exellent drills here for what ails you. For me there are some ten or so already that have helped. Check this one out, especially if you are the skilled player who already has a pretty solid idea of your problems. This is some good stuff for those as well as some basic good drills for all golfers.

Wow... I read this in 5th grade and it was worth it! And then I read it again in eigth grade... The reason i love this book so much is that i won the contest for Nintendo with the information in this book. (animal crossing pioneer)

Well, I can't say enough for this book. I own the hardback, and plan to get the updated paperback soon!

5 out of 5 stars An Nsider Delight.......2000-03-31

This is ONE book that I just can't get out of my mind! This book is a must get for gamers & Nsiders (The Official On-line Nintendo Club)!

Game Over gave a near-perfect insite to Nintendo's beginning of a handfuda card company (Japanese cards), develop into a game / toy company, & eventually entering the Video Game company.

David Sheff did an excellent job in writting this book & does go in depth into things as well as actual translation of the name ("Leave Luck to God" is my favorite).

If the Nsiders is a cult/ religion, this would be our bible!

This is a great book to read, even though there are slight minor flaws & this version only goes up to 1993. It's a must read good & would Highly suggest picking up the revised sequal, "Game Over: Press Start to continue"

4 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook on Nintendo's past........1999-12-11

Game Over is a terrific account of Nintendo's past, and is must reading for video game enthusiasts and historians. Mr. Sheff had what seemed to be unparalleled access to Nintendo's inner workings, and brought back a fascinating story on a family business made good in the international community. Unfortunately, the book falls for Nintendo's predictions for the future (many of which were designed by Nintendo solely to draw attention away from its rivals rather than to provide insight into their future business plans.) As long as the last parts of the book that attempt to chart the future course for video games and Nintendo are ignored, the book stands as an important work in video game journalism.

I do have a few complaints with the contents and focus of the book; there are the usual small factual errors which may obscure future historical video game research; there are the regurgitations of various industry spokesmen without proper interpretations; and there is the unwavering focus on Nintendo which tends to downplay the parts played by their competitors/rivals in the industry. I have yet to read the updated version of Game Over (Press Start to Continue), and the new version may rectify some or all of these shortcomings. Regardless, Game Over stands as a slightly flawed, but amazingly useful research tool and entertaining book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but flawed.......2007-08-08

I agree with several of the reviewers here. As a "purist" I object to models that don't start with a square, of which there are many here. I am also bothered by measurements that do not arise from the creases themselves (eg "fold into thirds".) Finally, Lang jumps from very easy to very advanced, with virtually nothing in-between (and uses harder folding sequences than neccessary IMO, Montroll achieves similar complexity in his finished models with far less difficulty.)
If you are willing to look past these objections, the finished models themselves are frequently amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Advanced origami book.......2005-09-28

The author of "The Complete Book of Origami" has become notorious for producing some of the most advanced origami models in the literature and this book contains a range of models which cannot be considered anything but difficult. Most of the pieces will not be possible from ordinary paper but will require either foil or very thin bank weight paper to work well. Wet folding would also be suitable for some of the models though the diagrams for the elephant sail into a patch of fog when making its behind!

Be prepared to spend some hours making each piece and you may well find yourself starting over again several times until a series of folding procedures becomes clear.

That said the book contains some excellent models - I have always liked the Cuckoo Clock and the Viking Ship, and can confirm that the action pieces really do work.

The diagrams are hand drawn rather than computerised which may explain the level of verbal instruction; however some of the sets of folds are very complex and the verbal instructions provide that much needed extra to understand what is going on.

This is a book for the seasoned folder and most paper folders who have reached the high intermediate to advanced skill level will enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars a weird and expensive book.......2002-11-17

at the first reading this one looks interesting but don't be fooled!
this book is filled with strange, ugly and really difficult models with at least only four or five good looking ones
the 3D section is a waste of ime, with poorly designed models
except for the scorpion the cicada and the tarantula(the challenge of my life)
the other cool part are the musicians, but the pianist is just impossible to be done,as the other advanced models, like the cuckoo clock
well I think that's better you chase some models on the web than buy this book

5 out of 5 stars Quality Origami.......2001-12-10

This is a great book-but only if you are already familair with origami. You cannot simply look at the diagrams, as Lang has made the text descriptions almost more important than the visual descriptions. The cuckoo clock is by far one of the most advanced models I've ever seen in a book-but there are some easier models as well. Most people will be able to find SOMEthing to make, but I would only suggest this book for a NON-beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive models not for beginners.......2000-11-14

The models in this book are among those that most impress my friends when I make them. Nobody else has a full grand piano, with moving pianist. Certainly it requires a piece of paper of unusual dimensions, but Lang still holds true to the artifice of Western origami: no cuts.

The models in this book certainly cannot be considered for beginners, but the cuckoo clock alone is worth the price of the book. Be prepared to use some tweezers, though. :-)

Would you rather give blood or read Hamlet? Fight Mike Tyson or talk like him? For fans of juvenile humor, Would You Rather...? is the ne plus ultra of ridiculous dilemmas. Created by toy developer David Gomberg and "functional performance artist" Justin Heimberg, this collection of more than 200 preposterous predicaments covers everything from sex and supernatural powers to utopian worlds and nasty curses. Whether read alone or with a group of friends, Would You Rather...? will have you laughing out loud as you debate the eternal questions of life, like: "Would you rather live in a world where Afros were mandatory for members of Congress or where it was legal, in fact encouraged, to crucify mimes?" --Rebekah Warren

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I bought a book like this a few years ago with a pink cover.......2007-05-04

and lost it so I got this one in it's place. The questions are really stupid and you don't care to even answer them. The one I had with the pink covers questions were very thought provoking and morally charged, and you did learn a lot about people by going through the book. This is just random dumbness. I threw away money on this.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent example of the words "salacious" and "vulgar".......2007-03-27

If you happen across a copy of this book, don't let your child look at it. It is entertaining only if you are pleased with language of the "gutter".

1 out of 5 stars You'd rather not buy this.......2006-03-07

This really is not funny or thought-provoking. Dumb examples from pop culture -- way too many. People didn't like it when used recently at a birthday party, and we abandoned it all together in favor of a much funnier, crowd-engaging version of this game: the Zobmondo Book of Outrageous Choices.

5 out of 5 stars When the point isn't to be deep........2005-09-19

I truly enjoyed this book because it allowed me to lighten up about "choices" or "dilemmas" or whatever you want to call them. I understand and appreciate the need for self-evaluation, analysis, curiousity, sharing, and developing. I do, however, sometimes need to not go there.

Many people complain this book didn't have the depth they would have liked. There is no depth, but the point isn't to be deep. I feel like the word "absurd" (used in the description on the COVER) points that out pretty clearly. For what it aims to do, the book does well. This book is a great reminder that *sometimes* all that evaluation/analysis stuff just is too much -- missing the point and ruining the fun of life.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time and Money.......2005-06-09

Not at all funny. I was kind of expecting moral dilemma type questions with a humorous twist, but got Fear Factor type gross-out phrases instead, or just plain absurd phrases with no thought behind them.

I will quote examples from another review, because they sum up the absurdity of 100% of the questions:

"Would you rather eat a pound of raw bacon or take a bath in bile? Would you rather be hole-punched to death or eaten alive? Would you rather have porkchops for earlobes or Magic 8-balls for elbows?"

Let's get real, how long can you "laugh out loud" (as some reviews claim) at any one of these examples? How thought-provoking are they, really?

I chose not to pick up the Doug Fields book "Would You Rather...?" because it's reviews claim it is great for church youth groups, and I am not a religious person. But I think it may be more my style, as I'd prefer to read moral dilemmas than stupid gross-out garbage.

I have come to the conclusion that many of these "Reviewers" must actually be the authors themselves, friends and/or co-workers of the authors, or bookstores trying to get rid of crap no one would actually buy by misleading people with false rave reviews.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not getting what you expect.......2007-07-15

Published 21 years ago, this reference to a rapidly changing category of data (shortline railroads) is woefully out of date. Worse, as advertised, buyers assume they are getting up to date information. Far from it. Kalmbach Publishing should be embarrassed to even offer it without a date on the cover.

3 out of 5 stars Dated and missing things.......2007-01-05

The short-line world has changed quite a bit in the years since publication. It's time for an update. What the guide does provide is interesting and generally accurate. Edward A. Lewis is perhaps the countries best authority on the subject and has managed several shortlines for many years. I suspect the problems of the book come from Kalbach trying to make it too small - it's glove box format. I'd rather have more information in an 81/2 x 11 format. It has locomotive rosters, capsule histories and other data. What is missing is train operations. Knowing this changes, perhaps the next edition should have an accompanying database of this information, updated by users as it changes. Another missing item are maps. As another reviewer has noted, the photographs could be better.

3 out of 5 stars Black-N-White Pix; 1955??.......2003-01-11

if a train watcher of any kind you need this book but the black and white pix, or lack of many pix as well as lack of any maps at all shows a distinct lack of effort by Kalmbach; very dissappointing

4 out of 5 stars Great on data and pictures - maps are sorely lacking.......2000-05-30

American Shortline Railway Guide is a great help for any train buff. Over 500 short lines are described: history, current status, number of engines (some lines with full listing), cars, as well as address of owner and radio frequencies. I especially liked the many pictures accompanying the text. There is really one drawback only: The book does not contain any maps. You will need a train atlas or a Rand Mc Nally on the side, unfortunately. Other interesting details are lists of abandoned and non-operating lines as well as addresses of ownerships companies. A must-have for US train buffs, especially in conjunction with the Train-Watchers Guide to North American Railroads (also by George W. Drury).

The riot of color that defines Kaffe Fassett's renowned work in needlepoint and knitting also energizes his remarkable quilts. Passionate Patchwork features 20 projects of Fassett's designs, complete with materials lists, pattern templates, cutting directions, assembly instructions and diagrams, and gorgeous photos. Fassett draws on traditional quilt-block forms, lending his unique design and color sensibilities to squares and rectangles, triangles and diamonds, circles and ovals. An old favorite like Courthouse Steps takes on new vitality when pieced in countless shades of red. The chevrons of brilliant stripes comprising Fassett's Handkerchief Corners quilt hint at optical illusion, belying the quilt's simple assembly. Appliqué enlivens designs like Hat Boxes, wherein basic window blocks take on the appearance of cubbyholes, each sporting a multipatterned hat-box form. A solidly written section on basic quilt making appends the book, though these innovative designs are probably best attempted by quilters with a bit of previous experience. The resource page lists suppliers for purchasing Fassett's own fabric designs, but these beautiful quilts can of course be made with any appropriate fabrics. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Colors beyond the beyond!.......2007-07-21

I'm probably just repeating what others have said, but how could anyone say anything bad about this book? When it arrived I sat down just to skim it until I had more time. An hour later I was still there, reading every word! The colors are so gorgeous, as all of his colors are. But beyond that I actually felt I could create these visual wonders myself! I wanted to RUN to my LQS and buy a crayon box full of colors and begin a new quilt immediately. My final words ... buy this book! It won't dissapoint you!

5 out of 5 stars Very very helpful.......2007-10-02

For someone who already has a good handle on the basic rules, this book moves on and teaches some basic moves and tactics. I found it quite helpful and would recommend it if Chess is not the most importnat thing in your life.

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-08-23

The book is hard to navigate through when you want to learn a solution to the problem.

4 out of 5 stars Be Honest..........2007-06-07

This book contains 300 simple tactical puzzles. The solution to each puzzle is only one move long. For the great majority of these puzzles (297 out of the 300) there is only one correct idea, which is given in a separate solution section. Solutions are accompanied by the name of the tactic used as well as a short verbal explanation of the situation. Not only do the puzzles involve single move tactics, there are fewer than ten pieces on the board in each position. This should help those new to the game see the main idea and not "miss the forest for the trees".

Problems are not grouped thematically. The 300 problems are divided into thirty tests, with each test containing ten problems. Many themes are represented in each test. Some recurring ideas include pins, piling up on pinned pieces, forks, skewers, checkmates, discovered attacks, and en prise captures.

Many players might feel the positions given in this book are too easy, especially since en prise captures are included. The problems may be easy, but practicing these simple motifs builds "chess vision". Also, novice players often miss these moves in games. The tactics in this book are things players need to spot without thinking. The only way to get to this stage is practice.

Look at some of your recent games and be honest with yourself. Did you lose any of these games because you hung a piece? Did you lose an exchange to a pin or a knight fork? Did you opponent blunder, only to escape punishment because you couldn't spot the chance to win material? If your answer was yes to any of these, seriously consider purchasing this book. More importantly, thoughtfully work through all the problems at least three times.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Not overwhelming book on basic chess tactics for the advanced-beginner.......2006-11-28

If you are past the stage of having learned the basic rules of chess then you are ready to enbark of the adventure of learning chess strategy. And, what is most likely to result in wins and losses for an advanced beginner is not having a deep knowledge of openings or endgames, but TACTICS!
If you were thinking of getting one of those 5,000 combination and tactics books you should hold off because you will be overwhelmed with a lot of postions that are not likely to come up in your games. Getting a book on basic chess tactics, containing the likely tactics you are going to see in play is most useful. Now there are a variety of ways and books to accomplish this. "Beginning Chess: Over 300 Elementary Problems" is a good starting place. Then you might consider one of the dozens of more complicated tactics books (such as "Winning Chess Tactis") or even a book containing opening tactics by getting an opening trap book (such as "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors" or "101 Opening Traps"). This is one of Mr. Pandolfini's best books.

3 out of 5 stars Modest Book on Tactics for the Beginner or just slightly above.......2006-05-11

BEGINNING CHESS contains a fair number of the types of positions with simple tactical themes that the "just beyond" the very beginning stage player should learn. Not a lot but not a bad bang for the buck! There really isn't a lot of material here (i.e. like Reinfeld's 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations or Winning Chess Traps), but it is just enough to make a satisfactory book worthy for the "advanced beginner". Not at the top of my list, but still a worthwhile work.

The riveting story of Nintendo's conquest of the interactive entertainment industry offering true tales filled with cocky arrogance, confidence and international intrigue that rival any novel. Whether it is recounting the struggles over the game"Tetris," offering blow-by-blow narrative of Nintendo's bitter legal warfare or its see-saw competition with other companies for market leadership, Game Over is a masterful piece of business journalism and technical reportage-a book both cautionary and hugely entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars How the old-school games were played.......2006-07-20

Oh this book is great. Anyone who grew up in the 80s and took sides in the early video game wars will love the behind-the-scenes look at what was really going on.

5 out of 5 stars From Atari to Today.......2003-11-10

While it is not entirely up to date, going only to just past the N64, this book is extremely informative as to the origins of the entire video game industry. It is not limited only to Nintendo, but stretches to every facet of what we know and love today. From the humble beginning of Nolan Bushnell to the era in which Nintendo was lord, ending with the fierce competition between Sony, Sega and Nintendo; it is all very well written without bias or lack of basis. A very worthwhile read for any true gamer.

I thought that this book was great. it told all about the pros and cons of nintendo and how they started out back in the late 1800's. It also tells about there rivals like Atari, and major computer companys. If your like me and love video games form nintendo you love this book. it may seem like a supprise at first since there are no pitures but it is still a very good book. they tell about how they started making trading cards in the east back in Japan, and how they made a deal with disney to make cards for them with pitures on them like mickey mouse. and how they started moving up and made millions of dollars by making the 8-bit classic NES, (nintendo entertainment system)
and where they got the idea of Mario. This video game empire I learned in the book, all started from an ape named donkey kong and a carpender (later turned into a plumber) named Mario. who was a bad guy and tried to save his girlfreind princess peach.
