1 out of 5 stars God Calling.......2007-07-09

God Calling is my favorite devotional book because every time I pick it up it has a word of comfort or challenge for my personal relationship with Christ. It speaks volumes with a short paragraph a day. It always gives me personal time with God every morning. It is a good book to lead you through your walk w/ Christ for any age.

5 out of 5 stars A Timely Word.......2007-05-15

This journal speaks a fresh word to me each day. It is as though a prophet of God has sat with me and ministered to me a fresh word from the Lord. I would recommend this book or journal to anyone who is seeking God, or who may be going through a difficult time in their walk with Him. Our God is a very present help in time of need and this journal is just one tool He uses to give that help.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a suprise........2007-05-13

My 82 yr old cousin was reading this book when I visited her this spring. She read an entry every day & had for years. When I got home, I ordered a copy & I am so in love w/it. I just open it randomly & the treasures I find are such a blessing. What I find is "what Jesus would say" if he could just pull up a chair & talk w/me. This is a very blessed book. I have so much respect & gratitude for the people who brought it into being. They really did the job Jesus asked them to do.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Reading.......2007-05-13

God Calling is a little book that can have a big impact on your life. Each day's reading is meaningful. I would recommend it to anyone of any religious viewpoint.

4 out of 5 stars An intellectual study of worship and calling.......2007-04-14

Nicholas Thomas "Tom" Wright is an Anglican bishop and a leading conservative British New Testament scholar. He has written 43 books including one with the liberal scholar, Marcus Borg of the Jesus Seminar, entitled The Meaning of Jesus: Two Visions.
The word worship is a contraction of "worth-ship." It means giving God all he's worth. This book is a call to renewal of worship and witness--not in the sense of adopting this or that fad or introducing this or that new music, but a renewal that begins with a better knowledge of God. The book's first half entitled, "The God Who is Worthy of Praise," dwells on the greatness and love of God as these shine forth in the death and resurrection of Christ. The second half, "Reflecting God's Image in the World," shows how worship from the heart and mind leads to mission. "Are we ready," the author asks, "to speak up for the truth of the gospel over the dinner-table, and in the coffee-bar, and in the council-chamber?" In a January 2002 interview Wright compared prayer and worship to drinking a glass of fine wine:
If you have a wonderful bottle of wine, you could simply drink it out of a tea mug. But that isn't how you want to drink wine. Doesn't show it off to a good advantage, doesn't set off the flavor? It's best if you have the right sort of glass. It's the same way with . . . worship of the Almighty God -- you can worship him anywhere. You can worship him in a bathroom, you can worship him in the back room of a pub. Really, God is everywhere and wants you to worship him. But if we really want to do it, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a building that was designed for it, and preferably one that has been prayed in quite a bit already, so it has the resonance and the memory.
What we believe about God makes a great difference in the way we are in the world. If God is a distant being, one who made the world and left it, or intervenes rarely, then we have a banished god, a vacuum in our life that comes to be filled with the gods of war, money, sex, power or whatever else we come to worship with our time and energy.
I was talking to somebody not long ago who said, "You know, I used to believe in God; but then, as I grew up, I found it harder and harder to think of this old man up there in the sky, so far removed from all the pain and suffering down here in the world." And I said to him, "I don't believe in that god either! The God I believe in is the god I see in the middle of the pain and the suffering down here in the world. Without Jesus, the crucified Jesus, sharing and bearing the pain and sin and suffering of the world, I don't actually know who on earth or in heaven God might be at all." You see, if you envisage a god up there in the sky, detached from the reality of the world, any worship you offer will simply be a distant acknowledgment of majesty, like the ploughboy doffing his cap as the great nobleman rides by ignoring him. And if you go the other route, as my friend was inclined to, and say that therefore the word "god" can only refer to the impulse of goodness inside ourselves, then you'll find it pretty hard to sustain any real sense of worship at all. All you're left with is the ploughboy imagining himself to be a nobleman. But if Jesus is to be the lens through which you glimpse the beauty of God, you will discover what it means to worship, because you will discover what it means to be loved.
Wright says we are all called in one of three levels or varieties. First, we are all called to hold onto God with one hand and embrace those around us in prayer, generosity, teaching and caring. There is no one that we meet who does not need healing of some kind and the pain we all suffer is remarkably alike. Who in their lifetime has not stood close to Jesus feeling beaten, mocked, crucified and in the wilderness? This kind of healing does not take miracles or a life of spiritual heroics, for the best healers are weak and wounded -- just look at Paul, who was not all that healthy. This healing can be expressed in the ordinary ways we care for another, in cooking, humor, visiting and even playing.
The second level is to those who are called to Church Ministry. The church is desperate for ordained clergy, but it also needs people to step into leadership positions, as teachers, worship assistants, youth directors, etc.
The third level of calling is in prayers for those caught in crises and trapped in the middle of war, prison, unemployment, poverty, sickness. We need healing prayers to bring about the social and political changes that will bring the peace of the Lord to all. These three varieties can be seen as means to build a Christian community and bring God and the teaching of Jesus into all parts of the world. This is all about sharing and bearing the pain, the thorn in our sides.
G. K. Chesterton one of the most prolific and gifted writers of the 20th century said that the purpose of an open mind is like the purpose of an open mouth: that it might shut on something solid. Tom Wright (www.ntwrightpage.com) is as solid a writer on Paul and the New Testament as you can digest and I hope you will make this or one of his many other works part of your reading for pleasure and knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars What the Church is called to BE.......2007-02-15

It does not matter how much you have read by N. T. Wright, I think you will find this book fresh. This is a collection of sermons on the worship of the Church which is covered in the first section of the book and some very insightful things are said about the Lord's supper and worship in particular. The calling of the Church is really what this book is about however. There is little about worship style, although what is there on that topic is very good. Wright really is able to get to the heart of what Jesus and the Church should really be all about. His stuff on the Middle East and Jewish-Christian relations need to be heeded. As always, with Wright you will get little tid bits that will change the way you view certain texts. I strongly recommend this book especially to preachers and those interested in the Churches vocation.

5 out of 5 stars In My Top 10.......2006-03-11

This book will find itself in my top recommendations (at least for a while). N.T. Wright's works are putting him in my favorite authors list. In this piece Wright tackles the subject of the Church and its mission.

Because the Church is one of my passions, I read a lot about it. In this book, I was given a taste and glimpse so inspiring that I fell in love with what the Church could be all over again.

If you are a follower of Jesus - this book will help crystalize what He invites us (His followers) to do and be in the world.

Get it, buy it, read it, love it, live it.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE MISSION OF THE CHURCH.......2004-03-28

Wright will push the conservative traditional mindset. I thank God for people like him. Who are not afraid to tell it like it is. Who see the church and it's mission not as a religion but as the way. The way that Jesus intended for us to follow. And how our vocation is to be a light to follow, not a set of rules to follow.

4 out of 5 stars A Challenge To Focus Mission.......2003-05-16

Wright is a skilled academic and researcher. He also is a man very committed to faith in action based on his deep understanding of the New Testament. For All God's Worth is Wright's call to all Christians to focus on worship and mission and to end divisive behavior. Wright recalls the healing and redemptive actions throughout the ministry of Jesus to illustrate how Christians should continue His work. He sees the redemptive consequence of Jesus as the Christians call to bring about the Kingdom Of God on Earth as it is in Heaven. Believers do this when they begin reflecting the one true God and not other gods of today.

This book is an easy read and can be broken into parts (each chapter is about 25 pages). It will inspire clergy, academic, and layperson alike.

Book Description

A Formatio book. God has called you--first to himself, to know and follow him but also to a specific life purpose, a particular reason for being. This second call, to a defining purpose of mission in life, is often termed a vocation, from the Latin root meaning "calling." And while it has implications for your work or occupation, it also reaches wider. It includes your giftedness, your weakness, your life in community, what you do day to day. In this book, Gordon Smith invites you to discover your vocation by listening to God and becoming a coworker with him. Smith addresses these questions and many more, pointing the way in this book toward freedom--and toward emotional and spiritual maturity. If you long to hear and follow God's call to you, here is the book that can get you started.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A really great book.......2007-08-18

This is one of the best books I have ever read.
I heartily recommend it as a source of great wisdom about matters such as callings, courage, mature living, choices, living. Written from a Christian perspective by a very wise leader. I am giving lots of copies away to good friends - both young adults and mid-career friends struggling with lots of priorities. Smith offers very helpful, practical guidance!!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and intelligent.......2007-06-07

This is the first of Gordon T. Smith's books I have read and now I intend to read others. He writes with unusual insight. I confess I have found many mainstream Christian living books written for too wide an audience, with a basic-level vocabulary, but Smith writes with intelligence, precision, and wisdom. This book aided my understanding a great deal as I struggled with a vocational loss of direction. I am so grateful for his perception and I praise this book in hope that it will guide you to a clearer understanding of God's direction for your life.

4 out of 5 stars Courage and Calling.......2006-11-10

A very good book for understanding the Christian's call. It addresses the various levels that every believer ought to understand concerning calling. It does, as few do, walk the line between simple writing and deeper theology.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing and Unconventional.......2003-02-21

This book was given to me by a friend who is an avid reader and said it was the best book he had read in years. I totally agree. Gordon Smith provides an unconventional, but highly Biblical approach to God's will and leading our lives. His emphasis on vocation rather than work or tasks, challenges many of the basic pillars of life people believe today. Yet he substantiates these differing views with solid evidence from the Bible. Especially helpful is the discussion on transitions through stages of life and the vital issues that must be addressed to make these transitions successful.

This book is a must read and applies to people in all stages of life.

5 out of 5 stars NOT a phony how-to-know-God's-will guide.......2002-05-28

This book is tremendous. After reading it I can say that I still don't know what I want to do with my life, but I have a much better grasp on how to go about identifying my vocation...and am willing to be patient and take the long view. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to take a thoughtful (and potentially life-changing) look at where they are and what they're doing with their time on earth.

Book Description

As the Bible thumpin', don't-you-dare-sass-me Sister Betty, Pat G'Orge Walker performs at churches, universities, writers' conferences, and on Chicago's WYCA radio. Now, she brings Sister Betty and her adventures to a wider audience with this uplifting collection of tales and spiritual teachings, straight from Pelzer, South Carolina and the Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us--All Others Goin' to Hell Church.

When God Calls, Sister Betty Answers

It was back on a Wednesday afternoon in 1984 when Sister Betty got a telephone call from God--and what He told her is the topic of the hilarious title story in this new collection. Introducing Sister Betty and her friends--snuff-taking, big-hearted Ma Cile, her two grandkids from up North, Lil Bit and June Bug, and neighbors including the gorgeous, red-haired Sister Connie Fuse--each of these seven tales serves up lessons about love and life, with a big helping of humor.

Rascals and reprobates such as flirtatious Deacon Laid Handz, man-hungry spinster Sister Carrie Onn, jealous choir director Brother Mythang, and scheming Reverend Knott Enuff Money hold a mirror up to everyone's shortcomings. The landmarks of the little town of Pelzer, such as the Homeboyz All-Nite-All-Day parking lot, provide comic relief. And yet for all the lightheartedness, each story ends with an important message about the gifts of God and the strength found in black church traditions.

As irrepressible as Sister Betty herself, Pat G'Orge Walker celebrates the gospel heritage and abiding faith of African Americans with her creation of an unforgettable character and her delightful comic sketches of modern life. Reading even one guarantees to bring a burst of laughter--and the sunshine of God's word--into your day.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read.......2006-03-02

While I initially found the character names silly, I have found this book entertaining. It has allowed me to escape into a world where I can giggle because some of the character's like Sister Ima Hellraiser are completely without common sense. Reverend Knott Enough Money's antics leave me giggling as well. Any time a novel allows me to laugh at the end of a grinding day, I think it has redeeming qualities so while this novel lacks the literary chops of Toni Morrison's or Alice Walker's work, it has the funny one finds in Tina McElroy Ansa's novels. So if you want to escape your daily drudgery and get a laugh, try this one.

2 out of 5 stars Not Too Engaging!.......2006-02-13

Teachers in Touch had a difficult time discussing this book. Most of the members could not relate to the language used by the author and had a hard time finding the humor. One member actually liked the book and said she laughed through her reading. Overall, our ratings averaged 1.5, but we'll round up to a 2.

1 out of 5 stars Couldnt finish it.......2005-04-29

I couldnt FORCE myself to read past chapter one. This is a horrible attempt at comedy. All the stupid names got on my nerves and the language was so juvenile. This is a pre-teen book. I will never read another book from this author again.I wish there was a rating less than 1 star, I wouldly surely give this book a negative 1 or less.

5 out of 5 stars Novel, Amazing.......2005-01-22

What an amazing, ingenius and wonderfully enlightening read. It's wonderful to see comedy used in such a profound manner. If you are looking for rocket science this is not it. If you want to read about church folks, and maybe you, this is definitely it. This is not relegated to the Black church it's in most churches; I should know- I'm a white woman. Those who have a problem with its simplicity may see themselves :-)

Kudos to Ms. Walker. I also recommend Mother Eternal. It's a novel and superb. I will never take my Christian walk for granted.

1 out of 5 stars So Sue Me.......2005-01-21

I am so sorry but this book was not good , funny or anything resembling the word GOOD. It was very silly and I thought juvenile for adult reading. This was a waste of ny precious time. I would not recommend anyone purchase this book.

Book Description

The memoir of a former top tennis player who dedicated her life, and the entirety of her immense fortune, to helping disadvantaged children. In the 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a tennis phenomenon -- she turned pro at the age of 14 and was the #2 ranked female tennis player in the world. But, despite her success, she was unfulfilled. After an injury ended her career early, Jaeger began to answer her true calling: following the Word of God. Listening to His voice ultimately led Jaeger to put the entire fortune she had amassed on the tennis court into developing The Silver Foundation, a non-profit camp for children with cancer, and dedicating her life to bringing joy to others. This is the story of how she went from tennis great to her second service and the story of the incredible kids she's helped along the way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great example of Loving your Neighbor........2004-11-05

Arthur K. Dugan, an avid reader.

Andrea Jaeger's book " FIRST SERVICE " is one of the finest I have ever read on personal spirituality and I have read many. Her life of service to God through the giving of all her great amount of money to develop a place for children with cancer called The Silver Foundation. As I read through her book she reminds me of dedicated people like Mother Teresa in her work with the poor. I will read the book again and highly recommend it to others and how each of us needs to be aware of the less fortunate.

4 out of 5 stars Wholesome Inspiring Book.......2004-10-30

Andrea is defintely an exceptional person, first as a tennis pro, then as a philanthropist. The latter is easily her passion and her excelling service to God.

She relates this story as it unfolds in personal memoir of her life and its turns, each one very much influenced by experiential leadings by God. This continues to develop as she senses signs which she responds to which eventually culminate in the founding of her magnificent work with cancer children.

Puzzling and of concern is her admission that she was babe in the Scriptures and still seems to be convinced by outward confirmation of rather bizarre happenings, rather than clear fountain of God's Holy Word. For example, her story in Detroit with the key to the kingdom is more poignantly given in Scripture repeatedly said to be Christ crucified for sins, e.g. Luke 24 et al.

While truly a model for all, but especially young and talented, to serve humanity, her tendency to follow outward occurrences and inward emotions to the exclusion and reduction of clearly revealed Word of God is dangerous and suspicious.

Don't let any of this reviewer's spiritual concerns detract anyone from this fine read and inspiration to all to get involved and serve.

5 out of 5 stars The Inspirational Autobiography of a Former Tennis Champ.......2004-05-17

In the early 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a household name, even among people who had little or no interest in tennis, the sport that catapulted her into the limelight. One of the youngest players ever to turn pro, Jaeger at 14 was everywhere --- in newspapers and magazines, on television. Her signature long, blonde pigtails made her immediately recognizable. She was the media darling of the tennis world.

Her career was cut short by an injury, prompting her to pursue a dream she had had since childhood --- not all that long ago, at the time --- to work with children. After spending several years acquiring business skills and other related experience, Jaeger and a friend moved to Aspen, Colorado, where they eventually set up a foundation and started a ministry to reach out to cancer-stricken children at a place now known as the Silver Lining Ranch. Jaeger's entire $1.4 million in lifetime earnings provided the seed money for the organization.

That's the straightforward account of what happened. In FIRST SERVICE, Jaeger fills in the details, the often remarkable, behind-the-scenes story of a woman whose childlike faith in God never questioned that He would bring to pass the hopes and dreams she held out for the future --- a future she always knew would not find its center in professional tennis. In her telling of the story of her life, her faith and her ministry, Jaeger clearly demonstrates that what was once considered to be her youthful exuberance is instead who she really is, because her energy, excitement and enthusiasm for life is every bit as much a part of her personality today, at the age of 38, as it was when she was a celebrity teenager.

Throughout her life, as well as the pages of the book, God plays the dominant role. From an early age, Jaeger sensed the presence of God even though she did not grow up in a strong faith environment. Many of her experiences with God have been nothing short of mystical; as a child, she had a vision of the Children's Crusade long before she ever knew anything about the actual event in history. Her narrative is sprinkled with accounts of dreams and visions that are bound to make believers shiver with supernatural delight and skeptics question her grounding in reality. But much of what she saw in those dreams and visions has come to pass and has contributed to the success of the ranch, so the skeptics may have to look elsewhere for something to disbelieve.

True to her nature, which apparently is an extraordinarily generous one, Jaeger is donating all of her proceeds from sales of FIRST SERVICE to help hurting children. In addition to the Silver Lining Ranch, Jaeger and the Silver Lining Foundation (www.silverliningfoundation.org) support children's charities in the U.S. and around the world.

5 out of 5 stars First Service -- Finding a Purpose to Life.......2004-04-06

This book by Andrea Jaeger is ideal for anyone who wants to get insight into finding out what is important in life. Andrea was a great tennis player but she has found joy and purpose off the court -- helping others and being close to her faith. She tells her story in a way that makes it clear how others, too, can find joy. The book is also excitng to read as you learn about miracle after miracle that has helped her build a beauitful ranch in Aspen, CO, where children with cancer go to have great days of peace and joy. Andrea rocks! This book is a perfect gift for anyone you love.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new or special here.......2007-09-06

Unless you're looking for yet another book to debunk female pastors and scold women who wish to lead in church, this book won't do anything for you. Indeed, the title itself is misleading: the point and focus of the book is not to exalt what women can do, but what, in John MacArthur's opinion, they may not do. This book is one huge list of "can't do's" for women written by an old-fashioned man.

There are three main points that MacArthur stresses in this book:

    1)Women may not pastor
2)Women pastoring creates disharmony and disorder
3)Only by letting men lead will true Christian goodness be achieved

MacArthur, like all those of his mindset and severity, truly believe that great mischief will be created by women pastoring. What exactly, is never said; we are simply told to believe that a person with a womb leading a church will cause unknowable and apparently considerable damage to the body of Christ.

MacArthur's studies of Paul's words center, of course, around his own purpose, which is to prove that God strictly forbids women to lead in church. He even says that women in general were not (and apparently should not) be leaders. In so doing, he attempts to cut down and minimize the actions of the women who did lead, in one instance by claiming that the two particular daughters in the Bible who were said to prophesy probably only prophesied once (a weak argument if ever I heard one) and that prophesy just means reaching out and speaking, so it doesn't mean women can pastor. Actually, MacArthur, one of the meanings of the word prophesy IS preaching. Good thing I did a little research of my own, or I might be unaware of the entire meaning of the word "prophesy", since MacArthur conveniently chose to leave it out.

When examining Paul's letters to Timothy, MacArthur mentions the problems occuring at the churches of the time and would have us believe that women trying to lead were one of the problems Paul and Timothy were afflicted with. Anyone with deep enough Biblical scholarship, however, would know that the problem wasn't women wanting to lead, but uneducated women wanting to lead in an unChristian way. MacArthur even goes on to say, "Indeed, there are still many women looking for positions of leadership" as though this is some awful thing that Christians need to fix!

Naturally, MacArthur exhorts women learning in the church; we just can't teach in it. We can learn from men, we just can't teach them, because there's either something in their maleness that can't take it or something in our womanhood that would damage them. Whatever this something is remains, as always, unknown, mysterious, and altogeter completely unproved.

If you want a book that truly exhorts women's gifts, I suggest you look at "A Woman's High Calling" by Elizabeth George, "Captivating" by Stasi Eldredge, or "The Purpose and Power of Woman" by Dr. Munroe.

5 out of 5 stars Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth.......2006-10-03

I thought this was a wonderful book that doesn't bow to political correctness. As always, Dr. MacArthur remains steadfast in his commitment to Biblical accuracy. Far from being chauvinistic, it celebrates women as God has created them and encourages them to thrive in the roles God has specifically designed for them. He is an easy author to read yet quite thought-provoking as well!

    1 out of 5 stars chauvinist.............2006-08-31

I haven't read this book, and I don't plan to, because I've read others of his works, and they are all insanely biased and male chauvinist... WOMEN and MEN: please do NOT read this, or you may ingest subtle lies whispered by the deceiver.

God did not make a mistake when He made men and women different. He had a distinctive plan and purpose for each. This book is a joyous celebration of that profound fact and an appeal to the church to utilize one of its most valuable resources: its women.

      3 out of 5 stars Designing Women.......2007-08-06

Wow. Rarely have I seen an author whose position I dislike, but who's style I love. Susan Hunt's a formidable woman who writes with zest, even if her definition of womanhood is rather incomplete.

Hunt definetly presents the complimentarian view better than many (and I mean MANY) before her. One of the best things about her is her open-mindedness and compassion for women who's positions she doesn't agree with. For example, she admits that the feminist movement opened with good goals and, when giving an example of women's Bible study groups that might steer in the wrong direction, she said that such women probably didn't intend for any wrongdoing to occur. In short, she generally gives women the benefit of the doubt.

Although Hunt speaks against "militant feminism", she's no shrinking violet herself. In fact, much of her words are spoken in a fighting spirit. I often got the impression of her rallying troops of women armies together and preparing them to fight in God's name. One of my favorite parts of the book was when she corrected an often misused quote of the Bible, in which women are told to have a quiet and gentle spirit. Hunt bluntly says, "The Bible was speaking of the spirit women should have with their husbands, not towards culture as a whole. There is a time and a topic for women to speak". Excuse me, but can I get a standing ovation for this woman? I've heard people tell women to be quiet so often, quoting that passage at them, it's about darn time someone set them straight. And a complimentarian, no less! How perfect is that?

This book, as Hunt herself affirms, is not to defend the position of male headship, but to uplift the concept of women's position. Unfortunetly, Hunt's view of woman's position is that of helper to men; this idea is stressed over and over in the book and deflects the true individuality God gives women. Hunt, like every other complimentarian under the sun, claims that male headship is not degrading to women and in no way gives them a secondary role. Actually, Hunt, it does. No one on Hunt's side of the argument seems to get this, but the concept of men being heads and women being helpers is VERY secondary to women! It's nothing BUT secondary to women. The idea is that our sole purpose is to help our men, the only leaders. Women can't be, in Hunt's view, more than helpers. Thanks Hunt, but I'd prefer to promote God's headship, not man's.

Hunt was for the most part open-minded, but the occasional one-track mindset crept in when addressing certain issues. For example, although Hunt acknowledged the fact that the first feminists had noble mindsets, modern feminists apparently can do no right in her eyes. Her statement that "no matter what extreme feminists go to, their agenda goes against God's design" was painfully inaccurate of many feminists, not to mention me! I understand Christians have to step on toes, but it's never good if you insult your reader's position and making swooping generalizations is a great way to do that.

If you strive to be more than a helper, this book isn't for you. If you're a staunch complimentarian trying to better understand your position as a woman, on the other hand, this is possibly the best book you could get.

      5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2003-03-24

I found this book to be a breath of fresh air in Christian literature aimed at women. Susan Hunt clearly outlines God's amazing and unique design for women(an empowering design) - a refreshing contrast for Christian women caught in the tug-of-war between feminism and Biblical interpretations of women's roles. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finally having a solid foundation on which to base their identity as a Christian woman or leaders interested in great material to pass on to others. Susan Hunt has done a great job!

5 out of 5 stars The most definitive book on Biblical womanhood I've read!.......2001-04-09

Susan Hunt holds to Biblical precepts when discussing God's design for women - how women were created differently from men - for a purpose! This book does not teach women to return to the kitchen and slave to men. This book opens the eyes of women who are unsure of why God made them differently in the first place. I am a stock broker and single mom, and I found this book to be intellectually stimulating and by no means stifling. It was refreshing to read something so practical and God-glorifying.

1 out of 5 stars Conservative Bible Literalists will like this book........1999-05-21

The right person may find they can identify with this book's philosophy and would therefore rate it quite differently than I did. I had the book in my hands for less than 30 minutes and knew I would return it. I am a liberal Catholic feminist and yet I am spiritual and seek to build a relationship with God. This book made me feel like I couldn't. One of the first stories are of martyrs of the Reformation - the tone against Catholicism left me cold. This followed shortly by a lecture against the sins of feminism. The "Design" of the book's title is one of "helper" to our males. If you are a Bible literalist and a conservative Protestant Christian you may enjoy this book - outside of that population, keep looking!
