5 out of 5 stars Thanks.......2007-10-07

This is my first Amazon experience and it was a good one. I am soo pleased with the book, I recieved it just in time. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-04-01

I purchased this book to help me learn medical terminology at my own pace. I expected less than what I received. There are diagrams, charts, and lots of examples. There is a good amount of repetition so after the chapter is finished the terminology is retained.

5 out of 5 stars Great Investment.......2007-03-31

I highly recommend this book and CD-Rom for anyone who wants to make a serious effort to learn medical terminology. This textbook is incredibly well-written and thorough. I feel lucky to have been able to purchase it at such a great price.

3 out of 5 stars not Mac friendly.......2007-02-05

The book is good and can be used to self-teach, but the CD-ROM does not work on a Mac OS-X; apparently it is a Windows-only application.
This is a pet peeve of mine and accounts for my low-rating. There was no indication before I bought it that the accompanying software would not work on my Mac

4 out of 5 stars not bad, easy system.......2007-01-09

This book starts out simple and builds on itself as you progress. It covers a broad range of med terms, with about 30 pages in each chapter and a good end of chapter review with different types of quizzes. The CD is also by chapter and has games to test you and also an area you can listen to the vocab words for pronunciation. My "plastic comb" version (not the spiral bound for more $) is falling apart after 2 semseters of use though.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-11-06

One of the best all-ages history books. :) Gorgeous illustrations, useful family trees, all told in a friendly and familiar style; not dry and academic at all.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2006-04-19

I cannot say enough good things about this book! I just finished reading it before using it for homeschooling, and am amazed at how much I learned! If only they used history books like this in when I was in school, I may have had an interest in history.

The books covers from Octavian at age 18 (when his uncle Julius Caesar is killed), through his death. The beauty of this books is that it covers world events during the time period as well as daily life in Ancient Rome. It's wonderfully well rounded and the illustrations are a nice bonus.

I will absolutely read her other historic fiction books and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this one!

5 out of 5 stars Happy to see this still in print!.......2004-04-27

What a wonderful book and introduction for a young person to learn about the Romans, and the way they lived! I remember first being introduced to this book in the 9th grade, when I had a mild obsession with the Roman Empire. This book has stuck with me for a long time. It is written in an entertaining manner, and makes these people seem more real and human than some stale 3rd person account of how things were. Each historical figure is depicted as people with the same basic fears, hopes and desires as everyone else, in relation to the society in which they live. It of course being for children is toned down as far as some of the facts we know or speculate today about these people (ie I, Claudius) but it gives a great account of how an individual of the day might have lived, and it is not just about Octavian/Augustus himself, but the people around him and alive at the same time, sometimes even in another country. This was the world of that time, and was a fascinating period of history. This type of book can easily open up a historical interest for a young person for life. I myself searched 10 years ago to find a used copy of this gem, remembering it from high school over 10 years prior, and successfully found a copy in an old book shop. I was thrilled to death to read it again, even after reading several translated histories from the Roman Empire.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!.......2002-03-23

One of the great bonuses of parenting is that you get to introduce books to your own kids that wowed you when you were a kid yourself. Sometimes your children love the books as much as you did; sometimes they don't. But in either case, you get to revisit with old friends and see how much you and they have changed and retained over the years.

Some of my best book friends when I was a kid were the wonderful illustrated histories of Genevieve Foster, and the one I loved most was *Augustus Caesar's World.* I recently introduced it (and a few others: *Washington's World*, *Lincoln's World*, *John Smith's World*, *Columbus's World*) to my 8 year old, and he's discovering the magic in them I did so many years ago.

There are three qualities to *Augustus Caesar's World* that make it so entertaining and educating. The first is that it's incredibly well written. Foster has the gift of breathing life into historical accounts. In reading about Cicero's execution or the life of Siddhartha, for example, one experiences all the dreadful waste of the one and the liberating wonder of the other. Second, the book is wonderfully illustrated by Foster herself. The illustrations are themselves instructive: along with individual scenarios, she provides time-lines, illustrated most fetchingly, that conveniently encapsulate events and persons. Finally, Foster's histories are really world histories. In *Augustus Caesar's World,* she focuses on the events leading up to the end of the Roman Republic and the establishment of the Empire (roughly, 44BCE to 14 CE). But she doesn't limit herself to Roman history; she also examines events taking place across the world during the time frame in which she's working: the druids in Gaul, Hindus in India, Confucius in China, Mayans in the Americas, and so on. She even includes intellectual history: the origins of Christianity and Buddhism, the Upanishadic culture of the Hindus, etc. Her aim is to give the reader a wide angle of vision, and she succeeds wonderfully.

I'm grateful that Foster's histories are being republished. They don't patronize kids by resorting to silly gimmicks that supposedly make learning more palatable (or at least more marketable). Instead, they make history fascinating the old fashioned way: by showing that it's a great story in its own right. They're a great discovery for my son, and a great rediscovery for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great history book for all ages!.......2000-08-28

This book was on the reading list in my daughter's 3rd grade curriculum. We read it together and found it fascinating. At first I thought it might be above her reading level, but it was just right. What surprised me was how interested she was in it. Genevieve Foster did a wonderful job with this book. I would also recommend her other history books on: Columbus, John Smith, and George Washington. One thing that makes all these books interesting is that Foster writes about most of the important events taking place around the main character; not just in the immediate vicinity, but in other countries. She gives a global outlook.

5 out of 5 stars Best Purchase Ive made.......2007-09-09

Ive been researching and studying Mental Sciences for a few months now, and of all the books I have purchased, this is by far the very best. Whereas there are a couple of parts that you may need to read over a second time to understand what she is saying in it, it is by far the most amazing read to date. I will keep this book and re-read it often...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and Inspiring.......2007-08-23

This is one of the best books on visualizing and the use of the Law of Attraction I have read. I have read the book a couple of times and each time I learn something new and also new about myself.

If you want to change the results in your life and to figure out how to do it I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading. .......2007-01-21

The power of the human mind..this is the topic the author discusses with great skill and insight. She writes from EXPERIENCE having already proven to herself from personal experience that the power she writes about is not only real but even more powerful than mankind has previously understood. "The proof is in the pudding" is the frame of mind she writes from, and anyone who invests in this book will be extremely pleased with their decision for having done so.

    5 out of 5 stars Awsome & life changing.......2006-08-18

I've only read the first few chapters and put it to use, and already I see the results.

Don't be fooled this is not some hocus-pocus occultic stuff, in fact it is the direct opposite (as stated in the book). You are simply applying law, such as you would apply the law of physics or the law of gravity to do the task.

This law was laid out by the Creator of the Universe, whose Divine intelligence goes through all things and is the Father of all things which came to be. This is the same principle which you father into reality that which you attract, by impreganting with your thoughts the elements around you.

On a side note, already from reading this book just a bit, I have become truly aware of the workings of other universal and divine laws (that I had studied previuos to this) which governs us, such as the law of prosperity, the law of blessing and curse (similar to karma), the law of redemption, ect.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking in conviction.......2006-07-14

The book is very short and as a result does not go into great detail in theory or specific examples. While I agree with the principles of visualization, if this had been my initial exposure to the subject I would have dismissed the idea.

Ms. Behrend leaves out specific details which would add to the power of the book. She cites an example of Tyson from Australia who dreamed "to make the desert land of Australia blossom as the rose." But she gives no real background on who Tyson is and how he became a millionaire. Further she gives no specific information on exactly what he did to make Australia blossom like a rose.

In another example she talks about the doorman at her apartment building who visualized receiving five dollars. Could she not come up with a more powerful example than that?

You might gain some additional insight from reading this book. However, in your search for greater insight into mind power, I would suggest some more powerful books. The Power of the Subconscious Mind, As a Man Thinketh, Mind Power for the Twnety First Century all come to mind.

    2 out of 5 stars A bit dated...needs to be updated.......2007-08-20

I enjoyed the "what not to wear" parts of the book. Although I found it to be incredibly dated. In order to be elegant she has you changing your clothes 5 to 6 times a day. Different outfits for 9,1,3,6,7,8 and 10 p.m. And stocking with seams...hmmmm Do they still sell these? There is some good advice but this book truly needs an update plus if you are not a city dweller spending weekends in the country a lot of this book will not be for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Must read for every woman of evry age!.......2007-08-13

Every mother should give a copy to their daugthers when they graduate college and begin their careers! It should be re-read every 5 years to re-enforce the wonderful concepts and remind us of the parts we may have forgot! As a career woman it her 40's who is moving up the corporate ladder, it has been an wonder source for sharpering my image! Coco Channel said, 'Dress shabbily and they noticce the dress; dress impecibly and they notice the woman.' This book will help all woman be noticed!

4 out of 5 stars Grace and Style are Always in Fashion.......2007-08-10

This book takes hints from days past to give you a guide on being cool, calm and collected. I imagine a Dita Von Teese-type woman when it comes to this book, and I would love to be like this.

This book has become an easy gift for friends -- one that will be appreciated by most any woman who values decorum and class.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing we don't already know !.......2007-08-07

Treat it as fun because it doesn't tell you anything that you don't already know about common sense and the sense of proportion. But it's ideal for tossing around the house and goes well with your Tiffany's publications collection because they have kind of the same colour scheme!

5 out of 5 stars a simple guide for max results.......2007-06-17

I really enjoyed reading the book. (this is twice now that I have re-read it) and have learned something new. The contents are wonderful from Accessories to zoology... (go fig) there is even a part on teens! She gives you a simple wardrobe to start with that you add on. Page 16-17 is very helpful too talking about what to wear from winter to spring and summer that will take you from work to dates...she even has a nice outline if you are living in a cold washed area to a heatwave area. I'm thinking of purchasing another to give to my daughter so I can have mine back! Best of luck to all you chic women out there!

    Book Description

    George Washington's World

The period measured by the life of George Washington—1732 to 1799 —was one of revolution and change in many parts of the world as Enlightenment thinking took hold in the minds of men. When George was a young man, Benjamin Franklin was the most well-known American, Louis XV was on the throne of France, and George II was king of England. Father Junipero Serra had just arrived in Mexico to work with the Panes Indians. Mozart and Bach were writing their immortal music and Voltaire warred with his pen against Ignorance, Injustice and Superstition. The young nobleman Lafayette watched the feisty American colonies with fascinated interest as they stood up to Mother England when she sought to tax them unfairly. James Cook was sent by the Royal Society of London to Tahiti where their team of astronomers might observe a total eclipse of the sun and thereby accurately measure the distance between the earth and the sun. These are just a few of the wonderful narratives explored by Foster in her Newbery Honor Book of 1940. Prolifically illustrated with intriguing line drawings and detailed timelines, Foster's telling of the life story of George Washington does justice to the man it celebrates. 355pg

4 out of 5 stars The World of Columus and Sons vs. George Washington's World.......2005-11-28

The World Of Columbus and Sons was the first Foster book I've read. I really thought it interesting. George Washington's World is a much better book than The World Of Columus and Sons. Why? I can't explain. I'm not so intersted in Columbus as I am with Washington. Now, this book is really helping me (George Washington's World) since I'm in a middle of doing a research report on Martha Washington, George Washington's wife. George Washington's World talks quite a bit about Martha Washington so that really helps me.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to love history!.......1998-11-30

I must admit, when I was growing up, I hated American history above all else. In comparison with British history or world history, it seemed so boring...all facts and no fun. Well, this book will make you enjoy eating your cultural veggies. First of all, the authors took the trouble to include the trivial details about the "players" that make them human and interesting. Also, because of Ms. Foster's unique panoramic approach to history, you are better able to understand the environment that made our heroes and villians what they became. Although this book is considered a children's book, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone over the age of 10 or so. The text will certainly not bore you, I promise!

    Book Description

Documentary films have enjoyed a huge resurgence over the last few years, and there's a new generation of filmmakers wanting to get involved. In addition, the digital revolution has made documentaries even more accessible to the general filmmaker. Documentary films can now be shot professionally using cheaper equipment, and smaller cameras enable the documentarian to be less intrusive and therefore more intimate in the subjects' lives. With an increasing number of documentaries making it to the big screen (and enjoying ongoing sales on DVD), the time is right for an information-packed handbook that will guide new filmmakers towards potential artistic and commercial success.

The Documentary Film Makers Handbook features incisive and helpful interviews with dozens of industry professionals, on subjects as diverse as interview techniques, the NBC News Archive, music rights, setting up your own company, the Film Arts Foundation, pitching your proposal, the Sundance Documentary Fund, the Documentary Channel, the British Film Council, camera hire, filmmaking ethics, working with kids, editing your documentary, and DVD distribution.

The book also includes in-depth case studies of some of the most successful and acclaimed documentary films of recent years, including March of the Penguins, Born Into Brothels, Control Room, Dogtown and Z Boys, My Date With Drew, and many more! The Documentary Film Makers Handbook will be an essential resource for anyone who wants to know more about breaking into this exciting field.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!.......2007-04-01

This book is packed with tons of useful information. We consider ourselves somewhat expererienced documentary film-makers, but it's given us a lot of valuable information we didn't alreadly know, and didn't know who to ask.

4 out of 5 stars Good Information, But Filled with Typos.......2006-12-24

This book is full of great information, but there are many places in the text where there appears to be missing text. e.g. pages 51, 57, 59 where there are little boxes that appear in the middle of sentences & break up the text, sometimes with returns that leave one word on a line. Curious.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than another "how to" book.......2006-11-21

Though this book has plenty of useful resources from writing to funding to filming to distributing your film, what really sets it apart from the rest are the short interviews throughout the book with people from all sections of the industry--not just directors! They generally start off with a simple question--What do you do?--and then quickly gets down to brass tacks and inside dope. It's fascinating stuff...engaging reading isn't exactly what one expects from a "handbook" but they've done it right.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - interviews are very helpful!.......2006-11-17

If you are truly interested in becoming a documentary filmmaker then this is the book for you, whether you are just starting or already well on your way. I found the interviews in the book to be the most helpful and informative. Thanks for putting together such a functional and important guide!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent way to teach/review the basics........2007-01-10

This book has been the most efficient and straightforward way I've found to teach and reteach grammar to my students. I used a co-worker's so frequently that I broke down and bought my own!

5 out of 5 stars Teach grammar? You gotta be kidding!?!?!?!?!.......2001-02-28

Even though the author states that this book mainly covers grammar from most seventh-grade English books, the four 8th grade Language Arts teachers at my school (myself included) have unofficially adopted this grammar book as part of our main curriculum (200+ eighth grade students). The teaching guides and reproducibles are very easy to follow. Each sentence part is explained in separate units in an analytical, systematic, repetitive, and cumulative method to ensure student understanding. I highly recommend this book!

    Book Description

This book tells the story of the world of the Renaissance and the Reformation. Columbus, Prince Henry the Navigator, Ivan III, Gutenburg, Queen Isabella, Leonardo da Vinci, Mohammed II, Nomi Mansa, Martin Luther, Vasco de Gama, Copernicus, Michelangelo and many others all come to life. The author, a three time Newbery Honor Award-winner, presents the events of this important period as a series of miniature dramas with an emphasis on the interaction of events and people.

3 out of 5 stars grain of salt.......2002-05-11

While this book does make interesting connections and presents history as a narrative, it struck this reader as having a strong white Christian bias. Isabel, who expelled Muslims and Jews and then sanctioned the Inquisition to hideously murder and torture those that were left, practically has a halo over her head (the inquisition is mentioned, but she doesn't get nearly enough credit for it). Prince Henry's exploration motives are purely based on his desire to better the lives of savages by spreading Christianity; hubris, greed, and material gain apparently never entered into his equation. Meanwhile, while I commend Foster for devoting a quick chapter to African emperor Mansa Musa, ignored by mainstream children's histories until fairly recently, I have to say that her portrayal of Africans leaves something to be desired; probably the less said the better. I recommend checking the book out of the library prior to plunking down the bucks for it. I will say that it's a decent starting place, but please encourage discussion, hopefully from the non-Western and non-Christian point of view.

    5 out of 5 stars Intriguing Concept.......2000-05-27

Genevieve Foster's books are based on an intriguing concept: a horizontal approach to history; a view of the world and the people who lived during the lifetime of the main character--in this case Columbus. Charlotte Mason would have us delve deeply into an era; these books help us do that.

Each section of the book starts with an interest-grabbing 2-page spread naming and illustrating people who lived during a portion of Columbus' life. These drawings could be copied and pasted into the student's book of centuries or timeline as the corresponding story is read. The maps and illustrations throughout the book provide much interest, although these short stories are appealing because of their conversational tone.

You'll want to acquire all the books in this series by Genevieve Foster.
