Nigella Bites--the title is taken from Nigella Lawson's Style Network cooking show of the same name--is the third book from British Vogue food editor and New York Times food columnist Nigella Lawson, a force of nature all her own. Her other books include How to Eat and How to Be a Domestic Goddess. Fans of the TV show will find all these easy-to-follow recipes familiar, and the book is even designed with pages for note taking at the end of each section.
Nigella Bites is divided into chapters that include "All-Day Breakfast," "Comfort Food," "TV Dinners," "Party Girl," "Rainy Days," "Trashy," "Legacy," "Suppertime," "Slow-Cooked Weekend," and "Templefood." "Templefood" refers to the "body as a temple," and Lawson shares what she calls "restorative" recipes, like the raw egg and brandy hangover cure called Prairie Oyster. Hot and Sour Soup and Gingery Hot Duck Salad are also present and accounted for.
It's all self-referential. Lawson (her chapter introductions are printed in 26-point type for the hard of seeing) holds nothing back about what she likes, how she overindulges, how she works her lifestyle into the kitchen and onto the table. It's encouragement by example, with a practical twist. You aren't going to spend hours in the kitchen midweek. That's a reward you save for the weekend. But there's plenty of deliciousness to be had midweek as well, and Lawson's there to help you along your way. --Schuyler Ingle

Some great recipes, some poor ones.......2007-05-24
I own several of Nigella's cookbooks and this one has some great recipes, like the chocolate cloud cake, ham and coca-cola and chocolate-lime cheesecake. But I have had really bad luck with some too. The Southern Style Fried Chicken recipe calls for you to poach the chicken first, which I found overcooks it and leaves you with soggy not crispy chicken in the end. A lot of the desserts are overly sweetened with sugar and I had to cut back on it. Some of the cakes are dry too. I am happy that there are so many gorgeous pics of the dishes so I know what the end result should be. Icould live without the multiple pics of her, though I know that helps the books sell. I also enjoyed reading her short little introductions to almost each recipe. I'd recommend this, but only as a used item to save some $ for more consistently good cookbooks.
she does it again.......2007-05-18
what can i say, i love nigella!! to be honest her books are like a novel to me, she is an excellent writter who likes to entertaing in every second, i own this book and forever summer and i am looking forward to get the other ones , i love the illustrations and the simplicity , if you love to cook i recomend it!
Love Nigella but..........2007-05-12
I own almost every one of her books, all have decent recipes, some more than others. You either love her writing style or you don't. I do. Much is left to your own interpretations. If I were to recommend a Nigella must have it would be Feast and Domestic Goddess. I cannot count the times I have made the granola and fairy cakes recipes from those volumes.
Fun recipes to share with friends & family, esp if you love Nigella.......2006-12-15
If you're a fan of Nigella's show, either the British version, or the American import, you will love this cookbook. A lot of the recipes come directly from the tv episodes. The cookbook is lined with great chapter intros that share a bit more about what makes Nigella tick.
I think I speak for all Nigella fans when I say we are 50% drawn to her recipes, and 50% drawn to Nigella herself, the way she cooks effortlessly, without worry or want, or her perspectives in life, which remind us to cherish time with friends and family, and not to sweat it in the kitchen.
I've purchased a number of Nigella cookbooks, and this one has the most post-it sticky notes coming out of it!
I know you'll enjoy this cookbook as much as me!
Comfort Cooking........2006-10-20
I love to cook and I have an absolute fetish for cookbooks. This one satisfied those loves perfectly. I've tried about five of the recipes so far and they are wonderful, probably because her recipes make no attempts at being low-fat or healthy. I love her writing about the food--it's down-to-earth, sexy, and practical. The photography is gorgeous and the layout of the book into categories like "Party Girl," "Comfort Food", etc give the book added character instead of the regular divisions like "Starters," "Desserts," etc. This book isn't for the constant health food fiend, or even for the beginning cook (though the recipes really aren't difficult, some are quite involved).

great way to teach manners.......2007-10-10
I bought this book for my 4 yr old who is an avid reader. She loves this book, and we've read it many times. Together, apart, a lot! I like the idea of using cookies to illustrate what each manner (or emotion) means. The 'retro' illustrations are wonderful as well.
Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons.......2007-09-26
I'm SO pleased I chose this book for my grandchild! This book is meant
to build good character in a child and with optimism! Before I give it to
my grandchild I should read it several times to REMEMBER...! a book for
ALL times, for ALL people especially those engaged in wars.
Cookies - Bite Size Life Lessons.......2007-09-24
Such a clever book - very different from the other kid books out there, and a great way to explain concepts that little kids otherwise have a difficult time grasping. A great gift-book, too!
Tasty Terminology.......2007-07-13
Wondering how to teach your preschooler or young child about putting others first? This book offers a sweet way to gently teach a child the meaning of cooperation, gratitude, honesty and more. Each character trait (positive or negative) is illustrated with a vignette relating to baking, eating and sharing cookies. The pictures are charming and endear children to the attributes. My 3 year old daughter requests this book over and over again and we enjoy the pictures and the humorous, sweet explanations. My favorite shows a little girl reaching over a long table to hand part of her cookie to a tearful kitty cat who has just dropped his cookie on the floor. It reads, "Compassionate means . . .Don't worry, it's okay. You can have part of my cookie." We all have something to learn from this book.
Amazing.......2007-07-04
I purchased this because of a wonderful review. I was not let down. My children, 4 and 6 love it as well.
Book Description
Etienne Argeneau's three hundred years of bachelorhood are at an end. He can only "turn" one human in his lifetime, and most of his kind reserved that power for creating a life mate. He has to save Rachel Garrett. He doesn't know her very well, but the beautiful coroner had saved his life. To save hers he would make her immortal. Rachel Garrett awakes surprised. All she'd wanted was to get off the night shift at the morgue; now here she is staggering to her feet naked and in a strange place. Then she sees the man of her dreams emerging from his...coffin? She just hopes he tastes as good as he looks.

Well thought out series.......2007-08-05
Fast and in some places exciting story. Our Vampires are a little too human (ie eating food) but the story rocks along to its conclusion. I was annnoyed that this was one of a set but that is just me. The Author has thought this book through and it flows wonderfully. The males are not too chest thumpingly ALPHA and the women are not too simpering. 9/10
Love Bites Has No Bite.......2007-04-05
First of all, the cartoon cover of this book sets the scene: no depth here. So anyone who goes in expecting much in the way of plot or character development will be disappointed.
Sands has an entire series set around the Argeneau family following the romance cliché with each member of the family getting their own book, in which the hero or heroine meets their lifemate. The vampire mythos is that all the vampires are actually descendents of Atlantis who developed nanotechnology. Nanos live it their blood and keep them in perfect health. Each vampire is destined to have a lifemate, i.e. a soulmate.
I won't bother hashing out plot problems as the focus of the story itself is not on plot, but on furthering the supposed sexual attraction between Etienne and his lifemate Rachael. Etienne turns Rachael into a vampire to save her life after she is axed in the chest by a totally ridiculous villain named Pudge--yes, Pudge--who has discovered Etienne is a vamp and wants to kill him.
Although I didn't hate it, my main issue with this book is with the scene in which Rachael awakens from being turned into a vamp thinks she is having a wet dream while Etienne tries to convince her she's awake, and he's a vamp. She is upset by him putting off her sexual advances and whines with disappointment that it must be because he is not well-endowed. Etienne responds with "all the men in my family are well-endowed." This line was so absolutely ridiculous and unbelievable that I laughed out loud. Rachael then responds with "Oh goodie!" I cannot believe the author, much less an agent or editor, did not suggest a revision to this absurd dialogue. What man would ever say this?! Worse still--how would he even know this information about the other men in his family?!!
Another amusing scene occurred when Rachael and Etienne are slightly intoxicated by the ecstasy-blood drinks they are slipped at a vamp club by Etienne's cousin. Rachael ends up on her knees, but Etienne gets a nice surprise when her blood lust overcomes plain old lust.
All in all, it's not the worst book out there, but many of the scenes trying to build tension between Etienne and Rachael were boring. Rachael whines a lot about the same old gripes--specifically about his turning her into a vamp, when she ought to be thanking him since she can't stop pissing and moaning about how BORING her life is. I mean, according to her, she was basically a hermit with a night-job of dealing with corpses in the morgue--why would she want to go back to that? Meanwhile, Etienne comes off as a geeky adolescent, despite the fact that he is supposed to be 300 years old.
In conclusion: this book has silly, absurd dialogue, no plot, and no heat between the main characters.
A fun and lighthearted vampire romance.......2007-01-26
Love Bites is the second in the series by Lynsay Sands following the Argeneau family of vampires. Etienne is a writer of computer games who lives alone and hasn't had a relationship for three decades. However his life isn't all dull - Pudge, a fellow writer of computer games, has found out that Etienne is a vampire and is trying to kill him. Etienne takes this in a spirit of amusement as Pudge doesn't really know what he's doing - Etienne's family think Pudge should be killed but Etienne has some sympathy for him.
Rachel Garrett works in the morgue at a hospital and has no social life at all - the night shift for three years has seen to that. She realises that her life is getting pretty bad when she finds the corpse of a handsome young man rather attractive - although is he actually dead? And did she dream him anyway? Then a severely burned corpse is delivered to the morgue a couple of weeks later and Rachel finds there is a heartbeat; she's about to call for help when a man comes in and tries to kill the burned almost-corpse. Rachel tries to save her patient and ends up receiving a mortal wound. At which point the burned corpse gets up and saves her life by turning her into a vampire. Now Rachel has to learn to live as a vampire and to live with the knowledge that Etienne has used his one chance to turn a life partner on her - saving her life as she saved his. With the help of his family she tries to make her way in this new world, knowing that Pudge is out there as a threat and feeling guilt that Etienne had to turn her.
This book is a fun and lighthearted read, despite the occasionally serious subject. There are lots of references to characters that are in the first book and the end of the book sets up for another. There wasn't a great deal of action in this book and the personalities weren't particularly in depth - I suppose if you liked Kerrelyn Sparks' "How to marry a millionaire vampire" you'd enjoy this book as it was very similar. It's good to read but nothing special and doesn't add anything new to the genre.
could have been better.......2006-07-03
This book did have a very interesting premise, but it could have been written in a whole much better direction than just to have the two main characters repeatedly having sex throughout most of the book. I did like the fact that 'respectable' vampires drink from bags of donated blood instead of attack people on the street (could have made a good subplot dealing with the blood bags); and the straws getting stuck on the woman's fangs so that she didnt have to taste the blood was kind of inventive too (but then she could have moved on with her life and tried to eke out what she could of the life she had before becoming a vampire). Too bad the blood issues were the only interesting things in the book.
this is a book that will please a particular demographic and leave the rest of us pretty cold.......2006-05-12
OK, this is a book about a vampire, Etienne, whose only passion in life lately has been writing video games. He sits alone in his basement all night making the games & the crazy psycho killer of the novel is another game-writer who wanted a job with Etienne and didn't get one.
Then the heroine, Rachel, is a coroner with no social life. But seriously, no social life. She tells us over and over again - gee, I never go out, gee, what's there to do at night, gee, I caught my last lover having sex with my roommate and that was years ago in college. Her first major bonding experience with Etienne post-crossover is...spending a whole night with him playing video games. 10 hours straight. It made me feel sad.
Look, if you can get past this, maybe you will like the book. But I couldn't find Etienne sexy, no matter how silvery his eyes or impressive his physique. Not just because he spends all his time in a basement with his computers, or because - as he admits one morning to his mother - he hasn't had sex in two or three decades. No, it's because he's such a puppy dog. He's a kid. Bashful and a little dumb where women are concerned and eager to please. He acts a lot closer to twenty than three hundred.
Plus, and maybe I've just been reading too many of these vampire novels lately, but I am a little tired of the part of the novel when the heroine says something flip and a little rude and some older yet wiser vampire chuckles and observes, "Isn't she delightful?"
Also, this is a novel in which the vampires think that biting people is really taboo. They don't bite one another, they don't bite humans, they don't even appear to be very interested in biting. Where's the fun in that? They do, however, make all sorts of interesting blood cocktails. That's nice, but...eh.

Many of the best restaurants tantalize diners' palates with charming, intensely flavored tastes that tickle the tongue and delight the eye. A tiny serving to whet the palate, an amuse-bouche (literally, "mouth amusement") sets diners up for what is to come. Rick Tramonto, executive chef of Chicago's widely acclaimed Tru restaurant, is well known for his passion for and commitment to these bite-size treats. In Amuse-Bouche: Little Bites That Delight Before the Meal Begins, he shares the art of creating these miniature delights. While most people won't find many occasions to serve amuse-bouche at home, the recipes are easily adapted to become passed hors d'oeuvres, first courses, or even main courses. From Chilled Fava Bean Soup with Seared Scallops, to Blue Cheese Foam with Port Wine Reduction, to Charred Lamb with Truffled Vinaigrette and Oven-Dried Tomatoes, this book offers something for every taste. Surprisingly, most of the dishes are exceedingly simple to prepare, often consisting of just four or five ingredients. As might be expected, the success of the recipes is dependent not so much on involved cooking techniques or complicated combinations of flavors but rather on the selection of a few high-quality ingredients. Creamy Corn Grits with Butternut Squash and Sweet Corn, for instance, starts with ever-so-humble beginnings to ultimately showcase the bright flavor of corn and the hearty sweetness of butternut squash. With more than a hundred clever and inspiring recipes, Amuse-Bouche will surely not fail to amuse. --Robin Donovan
Book Description
Amuse-bouche (pronounced ah-myuz boosh) are today what hors d'oeuvres were to America in the 1950s: a relatively unknown feature of French culinary tradition that, once introduced, immediately became standard fare. Chefs at many fine restaurants offer guests an amuse-bouche, a bite-sized treat that excites the tongue and delights the eye, before the meal is served. Nobody does it better than the celebrated executive chef/partner of Chicago’s Tru, Rick Tramonto. Amuse-bouche are a fa-vorite of diners at Tru, many of whom come expressly to enjoy the “grand amuse"--an assortment of four different taste sensations.
Amuse-Bouche offers an array of recipes, from elegant and sophisticated to casual and surprising—but always exquisite—that will inspire home cooks to share these culinary jewels with their guests. From Black Mission Figs with Mascarpone Foam and Prosciutto di Parma to Curried Three-Bean Salad, from Soft Polenta with Forest Mushrooms to Blue Cheese Foam with Port Wine Reduction, Tramonto’s creations will embolden the novice and the experienced cook alike to experiment with unfamiliar ingredients and techniques.
Organized by type of amuse and season of the year, the book also includes a directory of sources for specialty products. With more than a hundred recipes and with fifty-two full-page color photographs by James Beard Award--winning photographer Tim Turner,
Amuse-Bouche enchants the eyes as much as an amuse pleases the palate.

This is a very well thought out and put together book. I was very happy with it and recommend it to everyone interested in elegant amuse bouches.
Gorgeous and elegant.......2007-08-07
This is a wonderful cookbook with beautiful ideas. It has sensational taste combinations, is very classy and is beautfully arranged by season.
The recipes are simple, but mind blowing in their presentation and appeal.
This is one of my favorite cookbooks, and many of the dishes can be made in larger portions as elegant entrees. These dishes will impress any dinner guest, and add that wow factor to any meal. Some of the reipes include Mission Bay Figs with proscuito and mascarpone foam, mushroom terrine, and baby onion tarts - all little bursts of flavor that hit the spot.
You will not be disappointed with this purchase - satisfaction guaranteed

If a book can give inpiration, then this is it. For those who want to move up a step with their amuse then you can`t go wrong with this book.Although i hate to copy another chefs accomplishments,I was tempted. Like any good chef you need to make it yours. I have to say some of rick`s presentation is outstanding. There are few books i have seen to give the inspiration to move the goal posts that bit wider.A must buy.
Rick Tramonto has a true sense of current trends.......2007-03-26
From a professional point of view, I found Rick Tramonto's ideas and presentations for much up to date. I was most impressed with his culinary skills.
Amuse-Bouche.......2007-01-26
Great concept. Some very interesting recipes but needs more photoes to really hit the mark. It is hard to visulize these unusual recipies without some sort of graphics. The ones that are in the book are very good.
Book Description
Lucian Argeneau may be a vampire, but he's also a bit of a grump. Hundreds of years spent hunting rogue immortals will do that to a man. The last thing he expects is to find a reluctant vampire who's having a bit of a tough time adjusting to her new life. Lucian hasn't had to interact with a woman this closely for thousands of years, and he had no intention of starting now. But the best laid plans...
Leigh has been through a lot, but nothing quite prepared her for the situation she finds herself in. Thrust into the world of immortals and forced to absorb an astonishing amount of information, Leigh thinks that her tutor might exhibit a little more patience and a little less attitude. Of course, that doesn't stop her from finding him far too attractive for her own good. But Leigh, Lucian, and their new relationship will be put to the test when a very real threat enters their lives...

Lynsay Sands, a wonderful writer!.......2007-08-13
Her books certainly can make me laugh. It has a sense of humor, sexy and fun. I have read all Argeneau books. They are fun and enjoyable to read! Again, her books are indeedly HOT and sexy! Her stories are almost sound like so human and realistic. They are easy to read. The other books I read, there are hard to read because weird words and make me to think harder. I need something to relax and enjoy, her books will do! You will like Lynsay Sands. She wrote other kind of books, I have not read them but look forward to do that. I also look forward to her new incoming books - next year! I cannot wait! I am excited!
Outstanding!! A Keeper, for Sure.......2007-08-10
Lynsay Sands writes beautiful, humerous and sensous prose, even when it is a tad bloody...as in this comedic thriller. Not a fan of vampires as a rule, I will definately read Sands books, no matter what they are. This one stays on my keeper shelf!
So Good to be Back on this Series!.......2007-07-20
It's been a while since I picked up one of Sand's Argeneau family books. Once I opened the pages and devoured the first chapter I realized what a mistake I made by letting them go so long. With all the heavy hitting, punch-in-the-gut vamp romances available, this series is a blessed refuge when I need a little pick-me-up and a good dose of laughter. Much as I love the harder, more eerie vamp romances, I know I'll always come back to this series because of its humor and great characters.
Leigh has finally built a decent life for herself. She's a businesswoman, independent and she's finally starting to feel a bit safe. After getting over a recent bad marriage, a girl's got a right to such things, so when a vampire comes along and turns her pleasant world inside out--again--she's not going down without a fight. Too bad the wrong place at the wrong time ends her up in the sights of Lucian Argeneau. Notorious hunter of evil vampires, he's not inclined to give Leigh the benefit of the doubt. He's lived for two thousand years and seen and done too much to have any sympathy. Much as he wants to wash his hands of the troublesome woman though, he's hard pressed to see her dead. A mutual enemy still wants her though and suddenly Lucian becomes the protector when all he's known is killing. Can he remain aloof enough to finish what he started, the killing of a devious master vampire, or will their emerging relationship impede his quest? For the first time, Lucian's got a tad more on his hands then he knows what to do with and it's all woman!
What a great installment to reintroduce myself to the series with! I'll be up front and say that I did not like Lucian one bit for the first few chapters. He's so hardened after thousands of years of killing and I was amazed that this was to be the hero of the book, a comedy at that. But Leigh now, neither he nor I really saw her coming. What an effect she had on him! It's not an easy transition from centuries old killer to vamp-in-love, but to watch Lucian take that journey was very exciting. Everything from their desperate attempts to foil Morgan, to Lucian's small team of vamp exterminators ties so well together. Here's seriously hoping that his two cohorts, Mortimer and Bricker get their own stories one day or at least more cameos--they're very interesting! As usual, Sand's splices up the story with plenty of wit and laughter, but reserves plenty of sweet, suspenseful and doubtful moments for us to keep turning the pages. Sands writes yet another vamp comedy with enormous style that can only be admired and envied. Five very big stars and more!
Funny and entertaining.......2007-07-16
I had a great time following the adventure of a newly turned vampire and her prickly vampire protector. Funny and sexy, without really venturing into the land of chick lit, this was a satisfying read with a lot of great moments.
Hooked on the Series but miss the humor.......2007-06-07
I liked Bite Me If You Can, but like the previous entry in the series, Sands is getting more and more serious. I miss the wacky humor of the earlier entries.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-05-06
I knew I needed to set limits with other people, but I didn't have the words. This book does. It gives a few phrases that work everywhere with everyone, as well as other phrases to use with bosses vs. colleagues, or with coworkers vs. family and friends. It's not your average "self-help" book -- it's down to earth and truly useful. The author explains how women are raised to not stand up for themselves and then show how we can do it without getting the backlash we fear or expect. It's a great book.
Who needs Dr. Phil?.......2005-04-26
I wish I'd found this book years ago. The author doesn't just tell you what to say; she also tells you why it's important. What I found most helpful is that there's a major difference between being assertive and being aggressive, as well as between being civil and being passive. The ideas and skills in this book are so useful that my husband even read it and uses the skills at work and with me. This book has good ideas based on solid research that you can actually use!
A must have for all women.......2004-02-03
This is a guide for not only women in the workplace but women in their personal lives. We have been preconditioned to act and talk in specific way. This book easily guides you into making sound decisions on choices of responses to difficult situations. It is easy to follow and helps you speak what is truly on your mind without being cruel. It is all about being direct and getting what you want!!

Customer Reviews:
FINALLY!!!! A book with a real plan..........2007-09-17
My son has high functioning autism. He is so smart and Non-autistic in many ways..but NOT with food. I have asked so many "professionals" for YEARS for help..and I have never been able to get anything other than "He'll eat when he's hungry" or "You're worrying too much."
After reading this book, I cried..literally CRIED because I had FINALLY found a book that described my son..and that I was right thinking these people had no idea what was really going on.
I cannot begin to express how happy I am that we have a plan..a real plan..on what we ALL can do. I purcahsed a copy for his school so that his speech therapist AND his occupational therapist can get some insight on how they can help my son also.
It will be a slow process, but I am confident that with real goals we can do this. It is such a relief to have some help in this area..FINALLY!!
Disappointed with the book........2007-07-29
This book is probably an excellent resource for children with various medical and developmental issues; however, I found it disappointing for my situation. My son is a healthy, normally developing 6 year old child in every aspect except eating. I was disappointed that the book did not offer ideas for expanding his foods beyond providing new foods with ones he likes at mealtime.
wish I'd had this book when my child was younger.......2007-03-27
I think this is a terrific resource. No, it's probably not cutting-edge for a professional, but that's not the audience, which is intended to be broader. My daughter was extremely overselective as a young child--she's merely extraordinarily picky as a 10-year-old. Just by browsing the book, I've gotten a number of ideas about how to expand her food repertoire. She's alerady eating more fruit than she had been a few weeks ago.
The book also does a good job of reassuring parents who've been subjected to the same damn food myths ("If she's hungry enough, she'll eat." Not my kid).
O.K., but pretty basic.......2007-02-23
Contains some interesting ideas for parents just exploring their options, but too basic for the professional
Good first-line resource .......2006-11-10
For years I have told parents not to create a "clean plate club" or "just one bite club." When I heard someone praise "Just Take a Bite" I had to see what it had to say. The authors do a very good job of discussing common eating issues for young children with and without disabilities who are having trouble at meal time. The descriptions of sensory issues is done quite well. I found many of the same techniques I use and describe in my book, "The Down Syndrome Nutriton Handbook" mentioned as well including "Offering the child at least one preferred food item at every mean ald/or snack" and "Make sure the meail time schedule includes snacks."
The authors focus on the dysfunctions parents are feeling, which is a very important area!
I do wish there was more attention to the relationship between parent and child that can become very broken when there are eating issues. Having a list of tools is great, but it's also important to continue a loving and trusting relationship for the child to feel the limits, rules, and expectations are mutually respectful.
Also, although the authors do not come out and say the target audience is parents of children with sensry dysfunction, autism, or other disabilities, these are likely the main audience (especially considering the publisher focuses on books for people with autism). That is fine, but I was dismayed to see yet one more progression of skills and abilities based on age, which becomes a barrier for parents of kids with cerebral plasy, Down syndrome, and other disabilties where there may be a delay due to altered motor tone. I would like to see the authors offer a paragraph for parents whose children are following a different developmental schedule so they can feel comfortable accessing this important information!
All-in-all, a good first-line book for families who hare having tough mealtimes.

Vampires, Fantasy.......2007-10-06
What a wonderful treat for Laurell Hamilton fans!! and also how fantastic to be introduced to new writers who also write within the Vampire, Fantasy, Realm!!! I have since purchased several of the other authors books and have found each and every one of them well worth the time. Charlaine Harris's Sooky Stackhouse Novels, are such a hoot!!! well written Vamp novels with their share of different shapeshifters thrown in for good measure, I really had a fantastic time reading both Bite, and being introduced to new fantastic writers, Cant wait for more to hit the market!!!
Five Stars for Galahad.......2007-07-14
I loved Angela Knight's story "Galahad" it was the best. My only complaint was that it was not long enough he and Caroline should have had there own book. The rest of these stories sucked.
Book Review.......2007-02-07
GREAT book! I bought this book mainly for the short story by Charlaine Harris, and it was REALLY good. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and would reccomend it to anyone. It was great. I also started the story right after that one, and it seemed good too. Glad I bought this book.
Bite has great bite.......2007-02-02
I loved the stories in the book. Would love to find books of each author, or more collections. Each book has a great BITE to it.
A varied collection.......2006-10-01
Bite is a collection of five short stories from Laurell K Hamilton (her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series), Charlaine Harris (a Sookie Stackhouse short story), MaryJanice Davidson, Angela Knight and Vickie Taylor. I was very familiar with the first two authors but had read nothing of the other three.
Overall this collection was disappointing to me. Although the Laurell Hamilton story "The Girl Who Was Infatuated With Death" was OK it wasn't particularly deep (yes, I know it's a short story and so has limited space). It is set in the interval between Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly but fortunately hasn't descended, at that point, into the soft porn that the Anita Blake novels have turned into. The story itself is fairly simple and its resolution is really a chance to enable the main characters Anita Blake and Jean-Claude the Master Vampire to meet again. It was a perfectly acceptable story but nothing to get really excited about.
The Charlaine Harris story "One Word Answer" is set at the end of the third or fourth Sookie Stackhouse novel where Sookie and Vampire Bill are just friends rather than lovers. It features a strange night visit to Sookie's house of an unknown vampire who comes bringing news of a legacy left to Sookie by a cousin who, it turns out, was a vampire and was staked the previous month. There's more going on than the story suggests and, for once, Sookie realises this before Bill Compton or Bubba, her two neighbourly vampires. This is a fun little story but doesn't add much overall to this series.
The third story, "Biting in Plain Sight" by MaryJanice Davidson was really good and worked pretty well as a standalone story. I don't know if this author has written anything else on this theme, but if so this would inspire me to read it. Her main character is a vampire vet - all the people who live in her village know she's a vampire but it's not talked about. When she hears of trouble she finds one of the fellow villagers wants to help her and this is the start of an investigation into a rogue vampire who is causing young mortals to commit suicide. Sophie and her new assistant Liam, the friendly but slightly dim-seeming farmer, ride to the rescue and find each other in the process. It was a well-written book and I enjoyed it very much.
On the other hand, Galahad by Angela Knight was a real disappointment. I expect it's part of a wider series as there was an awful lot of stuff thrown at me that I didn't have a full explanation for. But the basic story seemed to be something upon which to hang a steamy sex scene and it didn't work for me at all. The world/environment was very complex, the magic these people wielded seemed far too convenient to help them save the day, and the sex scene didn't feel sexy. A disappointment. And not actually all that Vampiric - Galahad was a vampire but that was a very minor part of the book; it was mostly about witchcraft.
"Blood Lust" by Vickie Taylor was a better story. It's about a man who has invented synthetic blood, only to have a vampire steal his work and his fiancée. Daniel researches vampires, then plans to be made into one so he can gain revenge and rescue his fiancée by killing her (obviously she wouldn't want to be a vampire really). To do this he finds Deadre, the lonely female vampire, at a club and tries to persuade her to turn him into a vampire. Of course he doesn't really know what he's letting himself in for, particularly the requirement for regular blood as a new-born vampire, and things aren't really what they seem. This was a good story although the denouement happened rather easily, as in all of these stories.
Having read the book, it is obviously something than fans of these authors might want to complete their collection, and the stories are OK in their own right, but none of them are really fantastic and the short story formula doesn't quite seem to provide enough depth to make these truly satisfying stories.

Book Description
"That hot guy tied to Lissianna Argeneau's bed? He's not dessert – he's the main course!"
Lynsay Sands is bringing her hilarious voice and popular vampire series to Avon and we've got a new star on the rise!
A haemophobic vampire?
You guessed it. And her mother wants nothing more than to cure this nasty fear of blood so her darling daughter can have a normal meal for once. What better way than to give her a darling doctor on a plate–or tied to a bed––for feeding? But instead of simply having a delicious snack, this vampire vixen decides the doctor is too tasty for just one bite, and before they know it he's got a hot (but cold–blooded) woman on his hands who wants much more than to just sink her teeth into him...
Lynsay comes to us with an established track record. She may be new to Avon, but she brings with her an already–established series, the Argeneau vampire series, that has a strong steady fan base that's clamoring for the next installment.
Vampire comedy is hot and on the way up and with Lynsay Sands we have one of the pioneers of the mini–genre, and the best of the best!

Good read, but the rest are better.......2007-09-23
This was a cute book and I was glad to get Lissianna's and Greg's story, but I liked a couple of the other books in this series a bit better. Not that this was bad, and I do love Lynsay Sand's style and her characters, I just liked her other books a bit more.
Dumb and Dumber.......2007-06-29
The heroine is 200 and never realized if she closes her eyes when she drinks blood she won't faint at the sight of it? How does she manage to dress herself?
A problem with this series is these are portrayed as "good" vampires, but they are disgusting. In all "good" vampire stories, they differ from "bad" vampires in that they have some respect for humans. Not these. They call their victims "donors" and refer to undiagnosed diabetics as "sweet treats". Offensive, to say the least.
This writer has the very irritating habit in all her books of explaining insignificant things in great detail. And if you missed it the first time, fear not, she will repeat it a page later.
How on earth did she find a publisher?
OH NO!! I WAS DUPED!.......2007-03-08
My first book by this author was Bite Me if You Can and I thought I had stumbled onto something original and funny. But this book is almost a mirror of that book. Sure the circumstances are different but it is the same down to every familial interuption and villian peeping tom. Can't say that it was an awful book because I did love BMIYC but after reading a few of Feehan books I have wanted to steer clear of serial repetitive writers. AND saying that--I know I am going to continue scooping up her books.
And not to be picky because until this author I never caught any spelling errors and let most things slide but here is funny mistake: During an especially vigourous moment (wink wink)the herione puts her head onto what I am sure the author meant to write "collar bone" but in stead wrote "shoulder blade" which would be a different spin on an age old activity I dare say. Perhaps the nanos also make you exceptional limber?? Or maybe he was just short.
Close your eyes and bite down.......2007-03-05
I didn't realize when buying this that it was a) a romance novel and b) part of a series. It has the titillation of the former and can pass for a stand-alone without needing the back story of the latter. The characters are ... often clueless ( I was going to say vapid, but that would be too strong ) and it begs reason as to how the ones who are less than 400 have not been staked out to bake long before the goings on of this work. From the reviews I've seen of Sands' other works in this series, I would recommend that this not be your introduction to it; I'll myself consider picking up 'Single White Vampire', which I think is her first in this series, to see if it is an expected improvement over this installment.
pathetic.......2006-10-30
I've read much better. In this book it is OK to rob a person of freedom if the people involved are airheads. The author is not funny in her attempts at humor.

Persecuted by Fate.......2006-09-03
This is probably the definitive look at the strange horrors of Communist-era Romania, culminating in the 1989 overthrow and execution of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu. Edward Behr's treatment is both an investigative report into key events, and a historical analysis into the long-term social forces that culminated in Romania's terrible hardships. A history of imperial subjugation and frustrated ambitions steered Romania down the road to dictatorship, in the form of the dim-witted and histrionic Nicolae, and his manipulative and vindictive wife Elena. Behr usefully analyzes the state terror and recrimination fomented by the Ceausescus, to perpetuate their incompetent cult of personality and thoughtless oppression of the people. Also, the Romanian communists were as prone to bitter factionalism and denunciations as their Soviet overlords, while Behr finds that yet another party conspiracy manipulated the popular unrest of late 1989, to force a tragic continuation of the people's suffering under a new regime. This book is a generally excellent political and historical analysis, though there are some problems with Behr's narrative that keep it from being a consistent winner. The travails of the common people are merely alluded to in passing, with almost no examination of the horrifying disease, starvation, and child abandonment that were all over the world news at the time. And more fundamentally, this book was written almost immediately after the 1989 revolution, probably to cash in before public interest in the subject waned. This is a problem because Behr frequently vows to analyze how the Ceausescu dictatorship would leave a sorry legacy in Romania for decades to come, but not enough time had passed for him to make more than thin speculations on those everlasting horrors. Fine history of a dismal 20th Century Romania.......2006-04-28
The 20th Century will forever be remembered as one of supreme cruelty, and few nations can speak to this better than those who fell beneath the Iron Curtain. Romania, a proud Eastern European nation with a mix of Italians, Bulgarians and Hungarians among the native peoples, was a centerpiece to this. At the close of WWII, Communist forces rose up in Romania and neighboring nations, installing a home-brewed oppression under the guidance and repression of the Soviet Union. Romania's Communist experience was punctuated by distinct periods, the worst of which was the Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu rule of the 1970s and '80s.
With this background, Edward Behr does a fabulous job guiding the reader through a social and political history of Romania from its invasions of pre-1000 A.D., to the power-sharing rule under the Turks in later years, to the imported German royal family in the Industrialization of the latter 1800s. The nation was pulled in different directions by various interests - Hungarians, Transylvanians and Bessarabians (Moldovans) looking for dominion. Into this cauldron, Nicolae Ceausescu was born. Behr takes us through his childhood and upbringing, where the uneducated and unintelligent child was little more than a street thug who discovered, and followed without question, the Marxist-Leninist doctrine. He served powerful men within the Romanian Communist Party during the 'dark' years as a forbidden political party, was jailed for several years, and emerged at the end of WWII in the shadow of Romania's Communist rulers. His loyalty gained him titles, priviledge and eventually, the position of First Secretary. As Behr describes it, what began with hopes and indications of a break with Soviet doctrine, dissolved into Ceausescu's fascination with the cult of personality, his fear of betrayal, and Elena's pressures to keep them living at the peak while most Romanians suffered horrendously.
This book is well-written, very readable and an excellent overview of the troubles Romania has faced. While there are several interview snippets with members of the Ceausescu regime, and indications that Behr was given access to files of the Securitate (the Romanian secret police), there is nothing in the way of documentation. However, I have no reason to doubt that Behr traveled repeatedly and extensively in researching his book. Here's hoping that future authors follow this up by providing details on the Romanian Communist central planning function, and its fundamental break with the economic reality of the country.
Excels at recounting the Ceausescus' last days.......2005-10-28
Released in 1991 by Villard, now out of print.
There've been several books released on the Ceausescus so the reader may wonder how to distinguish them?
KISS THE HAND YOU CANNOT BITE has much information on Ceausescu's early years (how he became what he was), and the best accounting I've yet read of his last days and hours before his capture and execution. Also interesting are all the former government officials who now condemn Ceausescu. One wonders, if so many opposed him, why did Ceausescu remain in power for so long? I think many of these officials are rewriting their own personal histories.
By contrast, DOWNFALL: THE CEAUSESCUS AND THE ROMANIAN REVOLUTION by George Galloway and Bob Wylie, excels at recounting the events of '89 Revolution and the six months immeadiately following the revolution (e.g., the miner's revolt of June 1990, etc.). Excellent journalism, with a great many participants interviewed.
RED HORIZONS by Pacepa is a "slice of life" of the Ceausescus that covers several months in 1978, when Ceausescu was at the peak of his world prestige. Very lurid details.
About Ignorance and Leadership.......2005-04-04
I found the book interesting, rigorous and well-documented. Even though it echoes some American cliches about Europeans (like the Romanians' inherent anti-semitism) it outlines the cultural and historical context of Ceausescu's rise to power quite accurately.
I've read books on Ceausescu's lives before, such as Pacepa's "Red Horizons" but I needed a foreigner's take on this subject, a more objective one. Like most other historians, Behr makes a connection between Ceausescus' lack of education and megalomania, which is why I don't understand why he tries to extend this feature to all other rulers, especially the Hohenzollern kings, who were at least literate, if nothing else. Behr exposes Nicolae's personal issues (short stature, stuttering, bad temper, ignorance) as root causes for his vanity and erratic behavior as a leader, as well as Romanians' complacency and historical tendency to compromise, without romanticizing these features like Romanian writers do, most of whom consider them survival tools. He makes a point that I totally agree with: not only was Ceausescu made possible by the culture in which he lived, but he was encouraged to be that way by his peers (especially his wife). A ruling class made up of the most marginal elements of society was brought to power by the Russian tanks (ironically they eventually became fiercely anti-sovietic), which made the most backward features of the Balkan nation, like nepotism, corruption, lack of scrupules, bad taste, etc. the very leadership principles of Romania for 60 years. Ceausescu is bound to happen when the system of values is totally reversed, and Behr makes this clear with detachment and professionalism, without minimizing the responsability of the rest of Romanians.
A history of two evil buffoons who became leaders.......2003-12-29
While there were many indications of severe economic and social problems in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union during the last five years of the 1980's, the sudden collapse of Communism caught nearly everyone by surprise. However, the most amazing thing was the incredible lack of blood that was shed during the transition from the "proletarian dictatorships" to some form of representative government. The only significant deaths occurred in Rumania, where the change was a coup within the leadership class rather than a popular revolt. Since it was a coup, Rumania was the only country where the former leader had to be killed, and Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu were executed very early in the coup.
While this is a history of the Ceausescu regime, it is more so a history of Rumania in the twentieth century. It is an extensive probing of the national psyche, one that allowed a man to control more than was controlled in other east block countries while employing less terror. Although he was applauded in the west for his maverick stance regarding the Soviet line in Eastern Europe, Ceausescu was more of a buffoon than a leader, which is one of the primary reasons why the Soviet leadership allowed him so much leash. Despite enormous natural resources, Rumania is capable of feeding itself and has substantial oil reserves, by the 1980's it was the second poorest country in Europe, ahead of only Albania. Behr comes close to, but does not quite say that had Ceausescu been a capable leader, his challenging of the Soviet line would not have been tolerated and they would have engineered his removal. It is amazing to say that Rumania and the world would have been better off if the Soviets had simply had him assassinated. Furthermore, it most likely would have been applauded inside the country.
In reading through the book, you cannot help but wonder how the Ceausescus were able to control the country for so long. Some form of opposition to the Communist leadership existed in the other Eastern block countries, but was almost totally absent in Rumania. The relentless and ridiculous praise heaped on the Ceausescus by everyone was a façade that everyone except the Ceausescus seemed to be aware of. Behr spends a great deal of time probing for the reasons for this, making some progress, but still not arriving at a satisfactory answer.
Ceausescu has quite accurately been called a Communist Dracula, which is somewhat of an understatement. Dracula merely sucked the blood from his individual victims, while Ceausescu sucked the life essence from an entire nation. In this book, you learn what he did and at least some of the reasons why he was able to do it.
