Book Description

The updated 7th edition of this combination textbook and workbook is designed as an introduction to Spanish for classroom use. The emphasis is on oral proficiency—conversational speaking and listening comprehension—but the authors also present detailed instruction in the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing in Spanish. The book is filled with exercises and answers, true-to-life dialogues, humorous cartoons, illustrations of Hispanic art, and photos that capture the flavor of Spanish culture in Spain and Latin America. In this new edition, the lessons have been enriched with subtopics to enhance conversational speech. Also new with this edition are four compact discs that have been updated in content, and which replace the previously available tape cassettes, This audio component supplements the book, providing valuable instruction in listening comprehension and correct pronunciation of spoken Spanish. A teacher's manual is also available.

4 out of 5 stars A solid value, but not without its flaws.......2007-06-22

I bought this book before leaving to spend a year in Latin America. I wanted to hit the ground running with my Spanish, so I did many of the exercises before leaving.

The good: For twenty bucks, you get nearly 500 pages worth of study material. There is a good mix of rules explanations, reading passages, pictures, puzzles, and lots and lots of drills. The latter can get mind numbing but in the end is necessary to absorb the stuff. I found that if you plow the material diligently, and combine this book with a good, cheap spanish learning audio CD (like living language), you can really get a lot for your money. The version (though it was the seventh edition) I bought did not have its own audio CD, so I cannot speak to it.

The negatives: I agree with the poster who called the editing of the book sloppy. There is an irritating lack of attention-to-detail, including typos, sentence drills on phrases, though grammatically correct, would never be said by any real person. Worst of all, some words are introduced in questions before they are ever covered in the material!!! It seems like no one ever gave this book a thorough, cover to cover read for continuity and flow.

Even with all of these negatives, I am happy with the purchase. It really has allowed to me to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. It is a good value purchase, but not without its flaws.

Ruth Krauss, author of A Hole Is to Dig, has crafted a story almost Zen-like in its simplicity. A little boy plants a carrot seed and waits patiently, tending to it carefully, while everyone around him insists that "it won't come up." His conviction is steadfast, however, and sure enough, a carrot worthy of first prize at any state fair springs forth from the earth. Krauss's husband, Crockett Johnson (creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon), illustrated The Carrot Seed, and while the little boy is rendered with uncomplicated lines, all of his hope, confidence, and serenity shine through. The image that resonates most strongly in this minimalist tale is the unfaltering faith of the mild-mannered little boy. Young readers learn that standing your ground in the face of opposition and doubt can often result in twice the reward expected (even thrice the reward, if judging by the girth of this carrot). (Ages 4 to 8)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars don't give up!.......2007-07-16

This book had a huge impact on me as a child.

Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned.

I read this book to my own kids now, and they love it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars cute and easy.......2007-03-16

Pictures are very cute and this book is so easy to read and make my son attacted! We love it!

4 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2007-02-02

Maybe I'm being a bit too hard on this book, but after reading it I felt it was a very odd story. Sure it has a good message of not giving up because of peoples doubts. But somehow having the parent tell the child that they were afraid the seed wouldn't come up left me feeling yucky about the parents in the story.

The colors are ugly brown and orange. The illustrations look a bit like old fashioned comic strip characters; however they are clear and understandable. The text large and clear. The story is simple and repetitive. Its a okay book, but not the best available.

I much prefer Growing Vegetable Soup by Ehlert and A Seed Grows by Hickman. However, this book is probably the easiest of the 3 for a child to understand.

5 out of 5 stars The Carrot Seed.......2006-11-13

I love this book. And even though it is clearly intended to be a children's book, I gave it to my daughter for her birthday, turning 24. Then I wished I'd gotten a copy for myself, so I did. It's on my coffee table. The graphics are great, so simple, so 40's, but it's the message that I come back for; trust your gut, and don't give up your dreams. In this charming book, everyone around the young child pessimistically tells him "It won't come up." But he continues to water and hoe the seed he planted. He doesn't listen to all the negative chatter, and the outcome really brings a smile to your face. A great gift book.

5 out of 5 stars Lesson on Faith.......2006-11-10

This short children's book about a child planting and caring for a carrot seed is a simple, yet profound, lesson on how faith works. It is one of the best books on faith that I have read - even for adults.

By the time you have read this book you will know a lot about: You will also feel good knowing that you are on your way to being a horseman and not just a rider.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars USPC Manual - Beginning Level.......2006-06-27

I am a beginning & intermediate horseback riding instructor in Moscow, ID. I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.

5 out of 5 stars Pony Club Manual.......2006-03-21

This is the an excellent introduction for anyone interested in horsemanship. It can be studied prior to joining the United States Pony Club or serve as a usful tool in teaching or improving horsemanship for the young or beginning equestrian.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Pony Club Quiz Bowl.......2006-03-16

I couldn't have gotten through Pony Club Quiz Bowl if I didn't have this book. I like the exercises in the book and now I do them on my horse. I learned alot while reading this book, like parts of the tack and how to be safe around horses. I like all the pictures in the book because it helped me to understand what it meant. I would reccommend this book to other pony clubbers and kids who like to ride.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Harris- Multitalented Communicator.......2004-01-23

There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Susan Harris is not only a gifted artist ; drawing her explanations of concepts she is relating ; she draws pictures with her words, and for anyone lucky enough to attend one of her clinics , she draws explanations with body language. I am fortunate to have Sue as my friend and mentor for 30+ years & have told her often that "She could read the phone book to you & You'd never lose interest". She is also a gifted horsewoman & teacher. She posseses an ability to locate the crux of a lack of understanding & with empathy for both horse & rider guides them to a solution. If I had to limit my horse library to just a few books, her USPC manuels would be the first chosen. They are a wealth of information on all aspects of horsemanship , for every level of horseman , of any age. Her choice of words combined with her own illustrations gives very clear & interesting information.Sue stresses empathy for your horse & safety issues in every topic -2 basics to have ingrained in anyone who wishes to be around horses. I have recommended these books to all who share the "addiction" to horses with me.

5 out of 5 stars very good book to start with.......2004-01-16

I advise anyone young who is seriously interested in horses to start with this book. I've been riding all my life and think this is a great book to start with and it is very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of teens!.......2007-07-24

I purchased several books for my teen, and this one was one that didn't interest her as much - but I have learned a lot from it! It has a lot of insight into the teen mind, and as much as we think we remember what it was like to be a teen, it's easy to forget about all the fears and insecurities they have. I highly recommend this book as a refresher course for parents of teens. My teen preferred the perspectives offered in the books Cycle Savvy and S.E.X. for information that pertained to her.

      5 out of 5 stars A must buy!!.......2007-01-11

I have given this book to a dozen teens over the years. I wish I had access to this information while going through such a confusing time. Besides, would you rather them gather answers to all those questions through TV and friends??

3 out of 5 stars Great resource for teens.......2006-11-03

A great resource for teens, but the pictures are a bit dated. An updated edition is in need. However, the information is still relevant and necessary for all teens.

4 out of 5 stars A good primer for younger teenagers........2006-07-31

This is a primer for younger teenagers. It is well written, although it needs to be updated in 2006. It is a textbook more than a think piece. It is a good starter book for parents and younger teenagers.

1 out of 5 stars Changing Bodies out of date.......2006-03-23

I was very disapointed with the book. Expanded third edition was deceiving because I thought it was new - my oversight. The book is out of date - I oversee a Center that teaches sex education and this was not helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Never will put it down.......2007-04-01

Super easy format to read. Has many pictures and diagrams that are easier to understand than reading a whole page. Explains everything in plain english. Easy to follow along with. Each page is in full color, and the pictures are whimsical and fun ( unlike the internet for dummies which is in black and white which is so boring). The pictures are funny. Explains everything including:

A brief description on how to set up a website

      The History of the internet

how to do research on the internet

how to set up an e-mail address

how to shop online, and why prices are usually lower ( like Amazon!!!)

      how the internet works

      how to join chatrooms

and how to connect to the internet if you haven't already ( although I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that because if you haven't why would you be on amazon)

Explains so much more!!! Leave right next to your computer because you will always be looking at it!!!

5 out of 5 stars For moms and dads and anyone else new to the Web.......2001-12-04

Without a doubt, one of the best ways for non-technical folks to learn about the web and the internet. I'm personally opposed to labeling anyone unfamiliar with computers, a dummy. This book teaches by using mostly graphic imagery which clearly illustrates the concepts being discussed. A definate add-on for anyone getting, or giving a new computer, Mac or PC.

For 19th-century novelists--from Jane Austen to George Eliot, Flaubert to Henry James--social constraint gave a delicious tension to their plots. Yet now our relaxed morals and social mobility have rendered many of the classics untenable. Why shouldn't Maisie know what she knows? It will all come out in family therapy anyway. The vogue for historical novels depends in part on our pleasure in reentering a world of subtle cues and repressed emotion, a time in which a young woman could destroy her life by saying yes to the wrong man. After all, there was no reliable birth control, no divorce, no chance of an independent life or a scandal-free separation.

Christina Schwarz's suspenseful debut pivots on two of the lost "virtues" of the past: silence and stoicism. Drowning Ruth opens in 1919, on the heels of the influenza epidemic that followed the First World War. Although there were telephones and motor cars and dance halls in the small towns of Wisconsin in those years, the townspeople remained rigid and forbidding. As a young woman, Amanda Starkey, a Lutheran farmer's daughter, had been firmly discouraged from an inappropriate marriage with a neighboring Catholic boy. A few years later, as a nurse in Milwaukee, she is seduced by a dishonorable man. Her shame sends her into a nervous breakdown, and she returns to the family farm. Within a year, though, her beloved sister Mathilde drowns under mysterious circumstances. And when Mathilde's husband, Carl, returns from the war, he finds his small daughter, Ruth, in Amanda's tenacious grip, and she will tell him nothing about the night his wife drowned. Amanda's parents, too, are long gone. "I killed my parents. Had I mentioned that?" muses Amanda.

I killed them because I felt a little fatigued and suffered from a slight, persistent cough. Thinking I was overworked and hadn't been getting enough sleep, I went home for a short visit, just a few days to relax in the country while the sweet corn and the raspberries were ripe. From the city I brought fancy ribbon, two boxes of Ambrosia chocolate, and a deadly gift... I gave the influenza to my mother, who gave it to my father, or maybe it was the other way around."
Schwarz is a skillful writer, weaving her grim tale across several decades, always returning to the fateful night of Mathilde's death. Drowning Ruth displays her gift for pacing and her harsh insistence on the right ending, rather than the cheery one. --Regina Marler

      4 out of 5 stars 1920s Wisconsin without nostalgia.......2007-09-19

From the beginning of Drowning Ruth, I kept wondering, is Ruth's aunt Amanda just kind of crazy, or really crazy? The story begins with Ruth's memory of drowning when she was four, at the time her mother drowned beneath the ice. Aunt Amanda keeps telling Ruth that of course she didn't drown, but Ruth has emotional memories of the time surrounding her mother's death. Drowning Ruth is as much (or more) Amanda's story as Ruth's, a story about the healthy and unhealthy bonds of family.

Drowning Ruth is set in rural Wisconsin starting in 1919. The isolated farms and communities seem to foster private sorrows. Although the farm family's private island is idealized, generally life for these characters is harsh. There's no eccentric charm of Lake Wobegon here. Although I didn't click with any of the characters, the complexity of the puzzle drew me in.

The back of the book blurb describes it as a "psychological thriller". That's a misnomer better applied to The Alienist: A Novel. It's more of a family drama where Amanda's past unfolds piece by disjointed piece as Ruth's life progresses along a chronological path. This book is sold as an Oprah book and a book club book to an audience of women, because the primary material is motherly/sisterly/daughterly love, but it's also a good historical study. This is Christina Schwartz's first novel, and an impressive first one it is.

2 out of 5 stars Well written but depressing as hell........2007-09-10

Read this for a book club. Wish I hadn't. Going back to romances now so I don't have to deal with any more suffering than absolutely required.

5 out of 5 stars I've read this at least three times........2007-08-16

I haven't found an emotional thriller to beat "Drowning Ruth". The fact that I could get so involved with the characters that I wanted to shout at them is a credit to Schwarz's style. The plot twists -so surprising-yet not, in retrospect, reminded me of the last chapters of "Rebecca".

I'm sure this will remain one of favorite reads.

5 out of 5 stars Read it twice.......2007-04-30

This book is an intricate, perfect character study. I enjoyed the writing style and especially enjoyed the mental imagery. Read it once for pleasure. Read it a second time for the subtle jems you may have missesd the first time through. Wonderful!

      4 out of 5 stars Surprises.......2007-04-13

This book was given to me as a present, I had not heard of it and I picked it up reluctantly. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, full of interesting characters and a suspense that kept me gripped throughout the entire book.
A lot of surprises in this book.
