2 out of 5 stars Not one of her best.......2007-09-09

Sorry Katie - this wasn't one of your stronger efforts. I'm a big fan of the Ashling books. They're lots of fun, quick reads and the characters are pretty well developed and likable. It's not that the characters in this book weren't likable, just not that interesting. The story was weak compared to the others by this author. I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend it. There are better options out there for the time invested.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire ???.......2007-08-16

"Physicist Portia Harding's life is grounded in facts. There is nothing that can't be explained by logic and science ... until she travels with her best friend to England and accidentally summons an ethereal virtue who bequeaths her gift of weather control to Portia.

New Portia is walking around with a literal cloud over her head and a heart-stoppingly handsome maniac trying to kidnap her. But Theondre North is no run-of-the-mill lunatic. He's a nephilim - the son of an angel - whoneeds Portia's help to change his fate. Problem is, Portia's down-to-earth attitude frustrates being from both heavenly and hellish realms, and gets Theo turned into a vampire. But at least he has Portia to satisfy his newfound hunger ... and possibly save his soul. "

Even though I found this book very entertaining and amusing, I was very close to giving it 4 stars. And the reason is ....
The first 4 books in Katie MacAlister's Paranormals (A Girl's Guide To Vampires", "Sex and the Single Vampire", "Sex, Lies, And Vampires", "Even Vampires Get The Blues") are absolutely fantastic and actually about vampires. But this one, nothing of the sort....
But again .... the story is very interesting, amusing and engaging. Most of the characters are supernatural beings, there is quite a lot of "traveling" between worlds and of course there is romance.
If you are a type of a reader that pays immense attention to every detail concerning, for example, the historical parts of the story or any other descriptive flaws of the surroundings/characters etc., than I would definitely advise you to stay away. This books is just pure fun and light entertainment. So fans of paranormal mysteries/romance, and of course fans of Katie, go ahead and buy this book and enjoy it :)

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2007-06-25

Portia Harding was an uber-skeptic, but while on a trip to England, did agree to try to be more open to the idea that there was more to the world than what can be proven. Barely was the promise made than she had to make good on it. While relaxing in a fairy ring, she reads a summoning spell and in response, a woman calling herself the virtue, Hope, shows up, giving her the "Gift" before fleeing from pursuers unknown. Portia thinks she's just having a delusion, even after handsome Theo North shows up demanding that she grant him forgiveness and forcibly removing both her and her friend, Sarah from the fairy ring. The two women escape, but he continues to come after them, stating that he's a nephilim and needs her to forgive him. That's only the beginning of the weirdness. Odd people begin popping up to put Portia through "trials" so that she can join the Court of Divine Blood and take on her role as a virtue. Finally, Portia is forced to believe what is going on is real. Of course, by that point, the situation has turned dire. Theo has lost his soul and been turned into a Dark One, with her as his Beloved; and she has been accused of murdering Hope. Portia has scant days in which to complete her trials successfully, restore Theo's soul, and prove her innocence. She might also get to save the Court of Divine Blood in the process, but that's almost a side benefit. One thing's certain, when Portia is wrong, she's wrong in a big way.

**** Another certainty, in the real world, is that if readers are looking for clever, witty, paranormal romances, then they need look no further than Katie MacAlister to begin their list. Portia's conversion from skeptic to believer is filled with laughs and highlighted by moments of profoundness. This is the Best Dark One novel yet, and the ones that came before it were wonderful. ****

4 out of 5 stars nice quick read.......2007-06-24

nice quick read, plot moves well, nice character development, easy reading for a summer afternoon, can finish in a few hours

2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed.......2007-06-13

I love Katie Macalister's Aisling Grey Series so I was eager to start reading this book. After 135 pages I simply gave up, luckily I had a Keri Arthur for back up! The Portia character over analyzes everything to the point of boredom and then does it all over again a few chapters later. I got it the first time, you do not believe in the paranormal. Didn't some one write that a reader reads once and retains so you do not need to belabor a point over and over again? Portia is a pain pain and in my opinion the romance never really took off. Plus both character and author seem to have reglious hang ups and religion, like politics, is always a touchy subject.

1 out of 5 stars Spirit of cooperation won't happen in civilization meltdown........2007-10-02

Well, Christian teens might like this candy coated fiction, but I didn't.
"Bestselling suspense author" maybe, but not for this book! It is not poorly written; characters are almost three dimensional; a story is being told, BUT the whole concept of this white middle class Birmingham neighborhood surviving nationwide loss of power by loving their neighbors and counting on God to make things all right just doesn't work. No amount of praying is going to keep the starving city hords from overrunning them, enslaving them, and then slaughtering them for food. Pleasant front yard gardens, no way. Blackstock obviously needs input from some serious disaster experts! Slum dwellers would not sit in their homes and peacefully starve! The sweet orphaned kids would have been the first victims! Peaceful town meetings, no way! Time scheduling to dig a well, no way. With no government to maintain order there can be no easy life for a long time. Stretching the 3 fish (where have I heard that before)to feed 10 people, no way! Blackstock needs to observe people out of her comfort zone, people in the real world, people not in her church group.
If you as a reader really want to get a realistic picture of what life in this situation would really be like, I suggest you read "The Protector's War Series" by S.M. Stirling, or just watch the "Jerico" TV Series, or rent the DVD of "Testiment", which I think is the scariest movie of all time. Yes, the one staring William Devane and Jane Alexander. Sorry but having "Grace" is not going to save them in even the slowest mind's imagination.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting premise turned into a preachy book.......2007-08-28

What would happen if there was a worldwide catastrophe that made all electronics useless? That is the premise of "Last Light". It's avery interesting idea, and one that should make for a very good novel. Unfortunately, "Last Light" is a disappointment, considering its promising premise.

We only get to know a few characters, the Branning family and some other people they know. And most of the Brannings are rather annoying characters. The kids spend most their time whining about everything, and the parents are no better, frequently giving long morality lectures. And that's not just a problem for the parent characters but for the book as a whole. It seems that only Christians could come up with the idea to be nice to people and help those in need. And who could imagine something as awful as marrying a nonbeliever? The book spends too much time preaching religion and too little time actually telling the story to be enjoyable. And because it's so preachy it's diffucult to take seriously. If handled well, this could have been both a very entertaining as well as thought provoking novel.

5 out of 5 stars Blackstock never fails!!.......2007-08-09

Terri Blackstock has done it again!! This series is simply wonderful. I can't put it down and then when I'm finished I miss the characters. All three in this series are well worth the time. Imagine losing all computer, electric, or motorized technology in todays world. How would we live? This series examines the trials of a loving Christian family the Brannings in such a situation. A great read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-07-18

At first I wasn't sure about getting this book and I was sorry I ordered it after I placed it. However, it is totally different then I expected. When I started reading it I ouldn't put it down! It made you think about a lot of things and how you would get along without all the things we are use to having and using!
I couldn't wait to get to the sequel. I am anxiously awaiting book 3 to arrive.

2 out of 5 stars Why is this novel 'christian'? It is, rather, shallow humanism or Gnosticism in disguise.......2007-06-21

I heard the author hyped on a 'christian' radio station, and thought, ok a nice bit of "evan-JELL-ical" fiction might be entertaining. Wrong. This book is no more 'historically' christian than Gene Robinson or Elaine Pagels, if you know who they are.

The heroine of this 'woman's book'- ( i.e., a whiny, self-absorbed, vacillating female teenager) is so obviously CLUELESS when it comes to the issues of a Y2K scenario that REALLY happens, that she just HAS to leave her home, her parents, disobey the rule of her Father (one commandment down, nine to go!) and travel to another city -- without car, bike, or conveyance. Incredulously enough, she has to 'rely on the kindness of strangers...' like some modern-day Blanche in 'Glass Menagerie'-- and then the author has the gall to expect her readers to believe that this supple young virgin girl is NOT going to meet the worst dregs of society, after a set up like that? Come on!!!

Well, she does (meet some low lifes) --but here Ms. Blackstock shows her true colors, as it were. She goes out of her way to paint this Southern family's almost cultic obsession with a miscegenating Utopia- a sort of 'racially neutral evangelicalism light' -in lieu of real, covenantal, Apostolic Christianity; and it is here that the author, (like so many closet liberals) sinks to mere cant rather than prose for the remainder of the novel.

That Blackstock has her characters deal with the most surreal pie-in-the-sky 'interracial harmonized' South (the novel takes place in Alabama) among her protagonists, is truly pandering to the racial annihilists who hate Christianity, which is ANOTHER clue that this novel is not Christian; but to stave off the knowledge that Blackstock is avowedly condescending to her readers (i.e., race-guilty Evangelical Caucasian women all-- who would rather be 'touchy-feely' and 'inclusive,' than creedal, exclusionary, biblical and covenantal!) Blackstock brutally paints with a broad brush, to overtly slur... no, to outright 'white-bash' --the race of the character of the 'villain' -- something all those who see the racial mess that Bush's "Immigration Bill ['just say no'] to America," will countenance NO longer!

This writer's BLATANT 'pro apologia multicultura' is one which I have NEVER encountered in a work of fiction heretofore, whether secular or 'religious'! [Such utopain scenarios are without peer, as well, for sheer idiocy- unless this work of fiction be compared with Hillary Clinton's "It takes a village," or the "Obamanation's" self-apology for being self-absorbed, as 'the divinely- appointed black candidate for Prez' in 2008- oh, I rest my case....]

These racially-denigrating contrivances on the part of the author (who is white) are doubly insulting, especially in the aftermath of the bestiality, butchery, larceny, and outright sub-human behaviors exhibited by myriads of New Orleans Blacks after Hurricane Katrina- which were shown on the nationwide news, not for days, but for MONTHS. When Jared Taylor's 'The Color of Crime' CLEARLY shows that black-on-white INTERRACIAL crime is TEN TIMES more prevalent than white-on-black crime, (something NO AUTHOR is gonna touch, in this 'can't we all just get along?' era) the preachy 'how could they?' rhetoric Blackstock indulges in, having some of the characters falsely assume the black lawyer (another near-impossibility- cf. The Bell Curve/ Herrnstein & Murray) might be the guilty one, was the final straw.

As the author of the Biblical book of Tobit clearly stated, one's race and religion are inextricably linked. "Tobit 4:12-13: "Beware, my son, of all immorality. First of all, take a wife from among the descendants of your fathers and do not marry a foreign woman, who is not of your father's tribe; for we are the sons of the prophets. Remember, my son, that Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, our fathers of old, all took wives from among their brethren. They were blessed in their children, and their posterity will inherit the land. So now, my son, love your brethren, and in your heart do not disdain your brethren and the sons and daughters of your people by refusing to take a wife for yourself from among them." IT is no accident that, as protestantism has retreated toward the antichristian and marxist goals of a miscegenated, multicultural, one-world-religion, she should would also forget the Biblical admonitions to 'be ye separate,' and the racial purity clauses of the OT, which were written, as St. Paul says, 'for our example.'

As an older American once wrote: "The term `folk' has for its primary meaning a group of kindred people, forming a tribe or nation; a people bound together by ties of race, language, religion, custom, tradition, and history. Such a common tie we call folkways. A folk thus possesses a sense of solidarity and is quite different from a conglomerate mass of people. It has most if not all of the characteristics of nationalism. Indeed, it may be contended with much force that there can be no true nationalism where the population does not constitute a folk." ~ Frank L. Owsley

Clearly, Ms. Blackstock is, by her writing, either indulding in "selbsthass" of her own race; or she has taken her married name to heart, in that she no longer identifies with 'white folk,' but 'Black stock.' This author is no more than a modern-day Gnostic, an anti-incarnationalist hating the Folk of Christendom.

Orwell's 1984 is a truer, more European view of the End of the West. Or Chittum's Civil War II, which is fast becoming eerily rather less like fiction, than a prophetic utterance. Or, Raspail's "Camp of the Saints." But all of these writers are 'hard, edgy, confrontational'- the very thing that will make White women who vote for Obama or Hillary, rather than someone who will uphold the Constitution, to pass on these real authors. And so we are left with Blackstock. My suggestions for this authoress? Pass....please. Both for your mind, and your soul- and to not slur the term 'good, realistic fiction.'

5 out of 5 stars My first romantic novel in 15 years and I was unable to put it down until I was finished........2007-09-26

There was something so touching and sweet about this story. I almost missed work because I had been up all night reading it. Amanda is so desperate she offers herself to the governor in exchange for her father's pardon. Her despair, pain and vulnerability are so palpable despite her attempts to hide them behind her tomboysih and defiant exterior. The scene at her father's hanging brought tears to my eyes. Cliff DeWarrene's reaction to her plight and the way he came to her aid won me over. He was truly an honorable man. And he sincerely tried to think of her as an innocent child that needed to be taken care of, offering her his protection without expecting or even accepting anything in return. I found myself laughing out loud when I saw his jealous outbursts while he still denied his feelings for her. Brenda Joyce was very adept at developping these 2 characters and building/evolving their relationship. The sexual tension between them was always there, but she also took the time to build their friendship and their respect for each other. The fact that Cliff still preferred Amanda as "La Sauvage" versus the lady endeared him to me even more. This is basically the story of a gentleman sea captain, an unlikely damsel in distress with a lot of heart and spirit, a love story amid pirates, London's aristocracy, and the Jamaican Islands. What can you ask for more.

I have not read such a good novel in months ! And I devour books! Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!.......2007-05-20

An avid fan of romance novels, I just finished reading A Lady at Last and I absolutely adored this book. It will rank in my top ten amongst the hundreds of romance novels I've read.

The story of Cliff and Amanda is refreshing as the hero is not one of the typical brooding overly aggressive males. Instead he is a pure gentleman fighting his feelings and looking to truly take care of and look after the heroine. She is also a delight to read about as she tries to seduce her gaurdian.

Definitely give this one a read!

This is an excellent title for this book. I now realize that I have read at least one other of the series and will look for the rest because this book was very readable, the characters were interesting and I love series books. The two main characters in this book made me laugh and cry with them. Lovely book.

Story line had some potenntial but it was not developed in a meaningful way. The plot was transparent, the characters and dialogue stilted and there was little suspense. Tighter editing might have helped. Read more like a first draft than a finished product. Maybe Mariah Steward needs to take a break.....

5 out of 5 stars exciting FBI romantic suspense thriller .......2007-08-09

Internationally renowned archeologist Dr. Daria McGowan is euphoric that Howe University has provided with the first public exhibit of the incredible find of her great grandfather. In 1908 in Asia Minor, Alistair McGowan located the lost ancient city of Shandihar. The artifacts he brought home a century ago will finally be on display in Pennsylvania.

As Daria prepares the exhibit, she notices some of the more valuable items listed in the meticulously accurate catalogue are missing. She turns to FBI Agent Connor Shields, whom she previously met for assistance. Connor has not forgotten her and sees this as an opportunity to see where their attraction leads them. They follow leads to the new owners of the artifacts, but in each case that person was brutally slain in a ritual killing with the artifact gone. Connor assumes that a Middle East based cult sworn to die to protect and in this case recover the treasures of the lost city are the killers, which means Daria is on the hit list.

The latest Shields FBI romantic suspense thriller (see LAST WORD and LAST LOOK) is a thrilling whodunit that grips the audience from the onset when the person in the shadows vows to correct his failure and never slows down until the finish. The story is a fast-paced cat and mouse struggle between the lead pair and a diabolical dedicated killer with a lucid objective to cleanse the mistake of the last century. Mariah Stewart is at her best with the final Shields saga.

The econd in a series of books located in Cherokee, TN was okay. It was not quite as good as the first. Caleb and Jazzy's tale started off with likable but rather combustible characters in an interesting situation. I was somewhat disappointed with Caleb at the end. He goes off, leaving the woman he loves, when she is in considerable danger. Even though he swore to stay with her, he did not. He has not been honest with her. It made her very angry as she should have been. He leavces with his rich grandfather instead of staying and protecting her. Jazzy should consider selling out and seeing something of the rest of the world. This particular part of it has not been particularly good for her. The end of the book just sort of petered out with Jazzy appearing to lose some of her confidence in herself. I guess the author is going to tie things up in the final book, but she has to make us want to go there. Right now, I am not sure I do.

3 out of 5 stars Good sequel to Fifth Victim.......2006-03-10

Another killer is on the loose in Cherokee Pointe, Tennessee. Town bad boy Jamie Upton is found brutally murdered, and all hands are pointing to his former lover, Jazzy Talbot.

Jazzy and Jamie's lives have been intertwined since they were teens, and their illicit romance resulted in a teen pregnancy. Finding herself dumped, since Jamie would face disinheritance, Jazzy has always been Jamie's fall back gal when he is in town.

With new man Caleb McCord suddenly playing an important role in her life, she works to exonerate herself from accusation. When another murder occurs, Jazzy has an alibi - Caleb - but when she finds out the secret of his past, will she be able to continue the relationship? Further complicating her life is the emergence of a woman bearing a striking resemblance to her - one that wants nothing to do with her.

But there is a host of possible suspects including Jamie's latest fiance, her sister, any one of his other conquests in town, and Jazzy's "twin". Once again, psychic Genny steps in to help the police solve the mystery. What would the sheriff do without her?

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting..........2004-08-23

I didn't realize until I'd finished the book that it was a part of a series. With that in mind, I had real trouble connecting to any of the characters. And I found the violence a little more graphic than I was expecting from a suspenseful romance. The murderer's calling card is to cut off a man's genitalia and stuff it in their mouths. Yuk!

Jazzy Talbot, owner of Cherokee Point, Tennessee's diner and bar, has spent her life longing for ladies man and member of the upper crest, Jamie Upton. Though they were high school sweethearts and he impregnated her at sixteen, he refused to marry her because he would lose his inheritance. But that hasn't kept him from hound-dogging her door even while he's engaged to be married to another woman. Jazzy's reputation as a loose woman and the fact that she'd publicly threatened Jamie's life makes her the prime suspect when Jamie's dead body is found.

Caleb McCord is hiding from his past while living just outside his future. He's the only one aware that he is the lost Upton grandson and Jamie Upton's cousin. He works as a bouncer in Jazzy's club and finds himself drawn to her more and more everyday, but she can't seem to see him past Jamie's larger than life presence. When Jamie is murdered, Caleb is one of the only people who believe Jazzy's innocence. Struggling to keep her safe while fighting his own inner demons and his insecurities about becoming part of the Upton family, Caleb learns what it means to be part of a small town and the sacrifices one must make in the name of love.

With enough characters milling about to keep you guessing just `who done it', Beverly Barton weaves a good mystery. Though most of the characters reach no real resolution by the end of the book, and two serial killers coming to one small town in less than three months is highly unlikely, "The Last to Die" was still an interesting read. I'm definitely going to have to go back and read the first book "The Fifth Victim", and we'll all just have to wait to see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel!.......2004-02-14

I think I like this one even better than The Fifth Victim. While Jamie was a complete jerk, he didn't deserve to die like that! Jazzy & Caleb's relationship was great and I enjoyed catching up on Genny & Dallas. I can't wait for the third and final book of the trilogy!

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the return of Reve. What a shallow, arogant creature she is! She believes she's better than everyone else who wasn't raised in money! Which is ironic considering she wasn't born into privilege but found in a dumpster! She was a complete snob, insulting, bigoted and downright cruel and those were her best qualities! I hate to see her involved with Jacob (the neanderthal savage, as she thinks of him) since he deserves so much better! But regardless I'm still looking forward to seeing more of Jazzy and the rest of the folks in Cherokee Pointe!

4 out of 5 stars You gotta wait and see!.......2004-02-05

I trully enjoy Beverly Barton's books and this was no exception but I was a little disappointed with the ending because in my opinion there was none--it's actually a cliffhanger type ending with a set up for the third and final book ( although we do get the answer to who killed jaime and why). I guess I wanted all the questions answered and the hero and his lady to ride off into the sunset. Never the less it was a excellent book and I can not wait to buy the third and final book in this saga!

Book Description

THIS KILLER TAKES THEIR BREATH AWAY.

A nine-year veteran of the FBI, special agent Mia Shields thinks she’s seen it all. But nothing prepares her for the terror that descends upon the idyllic bayside community of St. Dennis, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where a depraved killer has left a grisly surprise for Chief of Police Gabriel Beck: the body of an unidentified woman, naked and completely encased in plastic wrap, stretched across the back-seat of Beck’s car. Hidden in the wrapping is a tape recording of the victim’s last, gasping words, terrifying evidence of the horror endured at the hands of a madman. Soon the body count begins to rise as more victims are found, all gruesomely cocooned, their final pleas also captured on tape.
Determined to catch the sadistic killer, Beck and Mia team up and set a trap–with Mia as bait. But their prey is closer than they ever could have imagined. Now Beck must race against time to save Mia from becoming the next victim of a serial killer as elusive as he is evil.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable.......2007-09-06

This is the first book I've read by this author. I wouldn't have known the author was a romance writer unless I read her bio. The book is more of a whodunit, and it's pretty easy to figure out. When I was first exposed to the character who did it, I though "surely it's not this obvious", but in the end it was. This book is a good quick read, but doesn't provide much else.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book.......2007-07-13

Mariah Stewart is one of the best writers out there, and I love the ideas of her trilogies, which tie together but also work as stand-alones, so you don't feel as if you've missed something by not reading the previous books.

This one wasn't as good as the first in this trilogy, mainly because I thought the culprit's identity was obvious right from the beginning. But regardless, the book is still a page-turner that you won't be able to put down until it's finished.

5 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense Tale.......2007-07-09

Mariah Stewart gives us the second of the tales of the Shields family. Mia is the sister of Brenden who murdered Dylan in one of her previous novels. She has been unable to conquor the feeling that she should have known what was going on and stopped the murders. Her family has been FBI for many yrs and her father and his brother have several children in the FBI.

Mia Shields is the only daughter in a family of five, her other four brothers are FBI also. Now she is living in Conner's house in the country. Conner is her cousin and the brother of Dylan who was murdered by her own brother. Her inability to deal with the stresses caused by the murder have pushed her to the brink of burn-out. Now she is coming off two horrible cases, and she thinks nothing could be as bad as those, however, the murderer killing young women in St. Dennis, Maryland comes very close.

Gabrial Beck, the chief of police, of St. Dennis, has asked the bureau for help and Mia is not quite what he expected. Beck's father was the previous chief and helps part-time now. The first murder is not in his town but the next girl he finds himself, the killer has placed her body encased in plastic in the back seat of his car.

Both he and Mia realize this is no beginner and that there has to be a trail of bodies somewhere. As the bodies mount the evidence of a local killer emerges.

Although there is a romance in the book it does not take away from the horror of the way the victims are killed. I very much enjoyed this book and so far each of her novels has been a keeper.

3 out of 5 stars However.......2007-07-07

About halfway through this book, I looked at Stewart's end-of-book small bio. Had I known she was a romance writer, I would never have purchased Last Words.

HOWEVER, I found the book rather enjoyable and not kissy kissy at all. It's a good book to read when it's too hot to go outdoors. Last Words was nice company. A "thank you" to Mariah Stewart for writing it. You gave me a pleasurable day, Miss Stewart.

I wish our reviewers here would quit trying to show off with their reviews. We don't need all those words of yours, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars delightful romantic suspense .......2007-07-04

On Maryland's Eastern Shore, St. Dennis chief of police Gabriel Beck goes to his car only to find someone has left him with a horrific present. A naked Jane Doe mummified in plastic wrap lies in his backseat; inside the wrapping is a tape recording of the victim's last words.

When more corpses are found cocooned in the same way in the area, the FBI sends agent Mia Shields, who is loaded down with guilt having failed to recognize a close to home killer, to help investigate. Gabriel reluctantly agrees with Mia's plan for her to be the bait to catch a serial killer.

The second Shields FBI tale (see LAST LOOK) is an exhilarating police procedural that grips the audience with the first murder and never slows down until the final confrontation. Gabriel and Mia are a strong combination as both believes the serial killer is a local; their investigation enables the audience to see closely into the lives of a small Maryland eastern Shore community, but cannot find a viable motive, which leads to Mia becoming bait. Although the motive seems weak, fans of Mariah Stewart's delightful romantic suspense thrillers will look forward to the LAST WORD in her Shields trilogy, LAST BREATH.

Book Description

The first story collection by Roberto Bolaño —"the real thing and the rarest" (Susan Sontag).

Roberto Bolaño's story collection Last Evenings on Earth was acclaimed by Francine Prose in The New York Times Book Review as "something extraordinarily beautiful and (at least to me) entirely new.... Reading Roberto Bolaño is like hearing the secret story, being shown the fabric of the particular, watching the tracks of art and life merge at the horizon and linger there like a dream from which we awake inspired to look more attentively at the world."

"The melancholy folklore of exile," as Bolaño once put it, pervades these fourteen haunting stories. His narrators are usually writers living on the margins and grappling with private (and often unlucky) quests. Set in the Chilean exile diaspora of Latin American and Europe, and peopled by Bolano's beloved "failed generation," these stories are unimaginably gripping. One story begins: "Mauricio Silva, also known as 'The Eye,' always tried to avoid violence, even at the risk of being considered a coward, but violence, real violence, is unavoidable, at least for those of us born in Latin America during the fifties and sixties and were about twenty years old at the time of Salvador Allende's death." Last Evenings on Earth has been hailed as "sheer brilliance" (The San Francisco Chronicle), "vaguely, pervasively frightening" (The Nation) and "brilliant" (Kirkus Reviews). The stories, as Publishers Weekly noted, are "perfectly calibrated: Bolaño limns the capacity of a voice to carry despair without shading into bitterness."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars bolano wrote great stories.......2007-06-03

The title of this review sums it up fairly succinctly. There are no two ways about it; Roberto Bolano wrote really compelling short stories. Familiar elements crop up in each story: poor, unsuccessful, mostly exiled writers, looking for something--sometimes old friends, other writers, family--generally being haunted by the violence which defined their lives. Despite the seeming homogeneity of subject matter, each story manages to compel. I suppose one must credit Bolano's poetic sensibility as well as Chris Andrews's translations which have helped us to experience the poetry in English.

5 out of 5 stars a literary stud.......2006-11-03

nobody writes likes this guy. the prose is delicious, hypnotic. Bolano makes you glad you can read. check out his work, including the two presently translated novels (they're both incredible); savor the language; be thankful for Chris Andrews, his amazing translator.

5 out of 5 stars A loss for world literature.......2006-08-28

When Chilean writer Roberto Bolano prematurely died at the age of 50 a few years ago it was a loss to world literature. By many considered as one of the most interesting of new latin american writers, Bolano in his lifetime published several novels and collections of short stories. Very little has, so far, been translated into english. For those interested in getting to know Bolanos work, Last Evenings on Earth offers an ideal starting point. These enigmatic, haunted stories will stay in your mind long after you've read them. So, while waiting for translations of Bolano masterpieces Los detectives salvajes, and 2666, allow yourself to be seduced by these magnificent short stories. Bolano novels distant Star and By Night in Chile are also available in english and are highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Latin American Master.......2006-06-09

Fourteen stories are included in this collection, by the author who died at age 50. He considered himself a poet primarily, and wrote fiction to support his family. The characters in "Last Evenings" invariably suffer early death by illness or suicide. Few, if any, of his characters achieve what Bolano calls the three highest goals of a man of letters: "fame, wealth and a large readership." Yet they toil away regardless, because they have no other choice. Bolano has a prose style utterly distinct from Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the other Latin American masters of the sixties, seventies and eighties. Bolano's style, in contrast, is flat and unornamented, like a police report; one can sense the influence of Jorge Luis Borges in Bolano's precision and clarity, and also an amalgamation of genre fiction writers of North America, like Phillip K. Dick and James Ellroy. Bolano melds these influences into something all his own, a sort of pan-Latin American voice, without any distinct national identity.

Book Description

From the multiple award-winning author of Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, and the three-book Fionavar Tapestry that "can only be compared to Tolkien's masterpiece" (Star-Phoenix), this powerful, moving saga evokes the Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Norse cultures of a thousand years ago.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kay's Ray of Light.......2007-10-02

In "The Last Light of the Sun", Guy Gavriel Kay returns to the world he started with "The Lions of al-Rassan" and his series The Sarantine Mosaic. However, as he has done previously, he shoulders the challenge of writing different material, creating another historically based fantasy involving different cultures, geography, and characters than he used in the previously mentioned stories. That is an order too tall for most fantasy authors, and Kay re-establishes his eminent position at the head of the table of fantasy fiction by doing so with grace.

"The Last Light of the Sun" is a story about three different peoples similar to peoples in our own history, the norse, celtic(gaelic), and anglo-saxon people. Again Mr. Kay tells a story steeped in the traditions of these ancient cultures while interweaving the political and diplomatic tensions that exist between them. Through elegant storytelling, the book brings to light the violence that plagued the people of the dark ages. However, it is not an overtly violent novel. The subject violence is touched upon in a `matter-of-fact' manner, displaying the hardships of life in a tenuous time. Kay does not glorify the murder. In fact it is a more than slightly horrifying the way that some cultures dealt in death in such a casual manner.

The magic of Kay's worlds is never overpowering or the centerpiece of the story, and it does not have a role or a life of its own, as it does in some authors stories. Nor is it intertwined with the soul of the world. It is mysterious, in the background. It has a mythical aura to it, as conjured by ancient beings such as faeries and indomitable beasts. In "The Last Light of the Sun", Characters only come into contact with magic rarely, and even more rare is the character that has magical properties, or possesses control of magic. Magical beasts do have a role in the book, however small. In fact, it is alluded to that faeries and monstrous beings, straight out of myth and legend, populate the world. Although they are not abundant and do not have evil designs upon the humans.

The major moral elements of the story are honor, responsibility, relationships, and the obligations that arise from them. These are the fundamental focus of the story, acting as catalysts as well as providing the multi-hued backdrop upon which the story occurs. In fact, the most prominent story lines in the book are that of two viking raiders, a father and a son. While they interact only minimally during the story, their past actions weigh heavily upon the present decisions and actions of the two. I will not elaborate further in an effort not to spoil the story for those who enjoy a little suspense.

My conclusion is that in a more respected genre "The Last Light of the Sun", and Guy Gavriel Kay, would receive more recognition for his storytelling talents. This story, along with his other works, is a great work of fantasy fiction. It is a definite read if you are a fan of dynamic, brilliant, and critical writing. Pick up a copy and prepare to enjoy yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the sequel??.......2006-06-16

I bought this book because, while I was looking through the SF&F section, I was intrigued by the cover with the Viking ship. It took me only a day or so to read, then I went out and bought everything else in the store written by Kay. The I came on to Amazon.com and bought all the ones not locally available.

I have yet to find anything in any of Kay's books that is not worth 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2006-05-30

One of the best fantasy books. It is better than Tigana imho. Tigana was sort of epic fantasy with wizards, etc. This one is a dark fantasy reminding me of Black Company by Glen Cook but in some ways it is even better. I am not very good at reviews, so I can only say that I really really liked the book. I would most definitely recommend this one. Love, death, heroes, loyalty, battles, ugliness of the war, unpredictable events and mystery. I am stunned. I never expected so much from a single volume fantasy work. 10 out of 10 without a cloud of doubt. The only slight drawback is a missing map.

5 out of 5 stars Best GGK book yet.......2006-04-26

This is the best he's written yet. Adventurous, exciting, and quite moving.

5 out of 5 stars Peerless Fantasy.......2006-02-01

Guy Gavriel Kay has been expanding the borders of the Fantasy genre ever since he began the Fionavar Tapestry (in 1984). This is his strength, what makes his novels a cut above the rest. "The Last Light of the Sun" is set in a world we might recognize as 9th century Britain / Scandinavia, with a few names changed and some major "philosophical" tweaks. I have read the legend of The Marsh King (aka Alfred the Great) many times, but never in such vital prose or with such pace. It is very difficult to put down, right from the start. Other authors who attempt this sort of fantasy, such as Jack Whyte, do an equally impressive job researching, but cannot convert the material into such a gripping story, or the characters into such engagingly real people. Of course, the main characters seem to be male, because it is a story of struggle between cultures, and women do not, as a rule, take up arms in such causes. Kay's women do the logical thing, influencing the male characters, which gives them as large a role, in keeping with their abilities and their culture. Many of the events hinge on the decision of a female character, and readers ignore this at their peril. Occasionally, Kay takes a few pages to illuminate a character who only brushes the central story for a brief moment. This is refreshingly original, adding to the depth of the tapestry, without cluttering the central picture with undue detail in the manner of the much maligned (but still popular!) Robert Jordan.
Kay's novels (except the Fionavar trilogy) do not deal with Great Evil & Great Good, like most fantasy, but rather with ordinary people who are more or less Good or Evil, and conflicting cultures, each with better or worse features, and their ability to adapt to each other in order to survive. His characters write poetry, fight battles, love, struggle with themselves, create and re-invent their worlds, uniquely.
Kay is my absolute favourite fantasy author, and this is one of his two best works to date. (Read "The Sarantine Mosaic", if you haven't already!) Nobody does it better.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-07-16

I've read better and I've read worse. This book is the first of a triology about Last Chance Inc., a group of specialists who meet up to solve some of the country's most dangerous problems - like bombings, snipers, murders, etc. In this first book, Madison and Gabriel are the main characters; Madison is a criminal profiler and Gabriel (Gabe) is a member of the Last Chance team who doesn't relish the thought of working alongside a profiler. Madison, Gabe, and the rest of the assembled team have the task of finding out who is responsible for a series of murders that are linked to the president and his relations with China. Of course, being a romantic suspense, Madison and Gabe fall in love along the way. There were not any `exciting twists' or any comedic moments either - this was a straight forward book with a fairly good plot and some action too. I would recommend it, but only if you like action to take a front seat to romance.

5 out of 5 stars ENDGAME: Sizzles as a Spring Release.......2005-04-05

Dee Davis' ENDGAME has all the elements to create a firecracker read: deception, secrets, sex and murder. Take a girl determined to prove herself without her family's riches and connections. Add a bad boy who doesn't like to play by the rules. Then have them attempt to play nice as equal team leaders...of the same team. The tension between alpha-male Gabe Roarke and the tenacious Madison Harper causes the pages to simmer in your hand, and their verbal sparring will have you smirking as you read. With her excellent flair at creating twists and turns, ENDGAME has a slew of characters with more secrets than a teenager's diary. If you like romantic suspense, snatch this up. After all, there's nothing in the world quite as exciting as sex mixed with international espionage.

4 out of 5 stars exciting police procedural romance .......2005-02-27

FBI Behavioral Science Unit Chief Walter Blythe informs subordinate profiler Madison Harper that she will co-head a special task force that the White House has sanctioned at the request of her godfather, business mogul Cullen Pulaski. At the same time that Madison objects because she has worked hard to prove herself without using family connections, CIA deep undercover operative Gabriel Roarke is yanked to be her co-leader though he was working on a case for two years in the Keys. He believes that his co-chief is rich man's candy; she figures he is the typical brainless macho over the top warrior.

Cullen explains to the two unhappy draftees that he believes someone is killing the members of the elite American Business Consortium, but making it look like an accident or a natural death. Madison brings on an IT guru who pays dividends immediately when he finds a deadly pattern; Gabriel brings on two field operatives that he trusts. As they work together, the initial disdain and contempt turns into respect and admiration before becoming love as each willingly would risk their lives to save the other from a killer who seems one step or two ahead of them.

This exciting police procedural romance is an intriguing tale more so because of Madison's abilities than that of Gabriel. The motive for the homicides comes up very late and seems off kilter, but the investigation is fun to follow especially as Madison and Gabriel begrudgingly initially realize how wrong first impressions can be as they soon depend, trust and love one another. Fans of suspense thrillers will want to read ENDGAME, a fine tale of love and murder.

5 out of 5 stars The author shows her sneaky side........2004-11-26

Madison Harper is one of the FBI's top criminal profilers. She has just wrapped up one big case and two others pending, but her boss puts an end to those plans. Her other cases are being delegated elsewhere. Why? Cullen Pulaski is her godfather, her friend, and one of the richest and well known men in America. He is a big player in the American Business Consortium. The accord (consortium) was formed in the wake of 9/11. It is an attempt at communication and cooperation among leading industrial bigwigs internationally. Negotiations with the Chinese are almost complete. However, Cullen believes that someone is killing off the key players of the accord. Cullen went to the White House and got approval to make a task force to investigate his hypothesis. He chose Madison Harper to share command with Gabriel "Gabe" Roarke (CIA) in gathering the people to make up the task force and head it.

Gabe did not like being pulling out of his undercover mission after three years of work on it. Yet when Cullen wants something he normally gets it. And this time, he got it. Gabe also did not like the fact that he had to share command with a "profiler", and a woman at that. Without Madison's permission, he calls in a couple men to be in the force. Too bad if she did not like it. But he never expected to meet Madison and find out that she not only feels the same way about him, but she had also recruited a couple of people without his permission. Too bad if HE did not like it.

The two obviously get off to a bad start. Sparks fly for more than one reason. However, people are dying and the accord is in jeopardy. They must work together to figure out it out quickly, because the killer is hitting closer to home.

***** This is the first of a trilogy. The next book will be "Enigma", due for release in June 05. The last title will be "Exposure", due for release in September 05.

The author, Dee Davis, shows her sneaky side in this novel. The killer has been killing for close to three years and tags six victims before anyone even THINKS that there may be a pattern. Just as I thought I knew who was doing what and why, the author throws in startling obstacles and I go stumbling along. Dee Davis is masterful in keeping her readers on the edge of their seats. Book Description

Previously published as The Turning Point, this powerful story is about a woman searching for a new beginning. Desperate to escape her abusive marriage, Lilly Crawford files for divorce, then slips away from her small east Texas hometown with little more than the clothes on her back. With broken dreams and countless regrets, she points her twelve-year-old car east, hoping to find a new beginning. But when her car breaks down on a back road in Louisiana, Lilly is forced to seek help and finds unex-pected employment in the wealthy Wakefield home-a powerful southern family who takes her in as one of their own. Lilly even finds an unexpected love with Adam, the Wakefield son and head of the family. But then Lilly's ex-husband resurfaces, bring-ing with him a past that threatens to destroy her new found life.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites..........2007-10-03

This is one of my favorite romance novels. It was selected as a book club read. I think I fell in love right along with Lilly and Dr. Crawford. The development of their relationship is so wholesome, you can help but not to. This book will definitely not disappoint you.

4 out of 5 stars AKA how to develop a backbone 4.5 stars.......2007-08-22

A beautiful story of love overcoming adversity, courage, finding oneself etc. Lilly helps a rich blind docter Adam to regain his self esteem and finds love and a backbone for herself, Jonathan's patience of 40 years pays off with Eleanor. The only fly in the ointment is Kristen but her story is told in Somebody's knocking at my door, read this book (Trouble) first to get an understanding of her character and the minor character Rafe.

5 out of 5 stars My all time favorite book.......2007-07-16

I love this book I can read this book over and over again. I really love this book because it is a story about two people that meet each other at their worst and find love and it really hits your heart. This book is my all time favorite and I admire Lilly and Adam's strength and determination to make it through the hard times that they are enduring and I love Francis Ray.

5 out of 5 stars I really liked this book.......2007-06-22

Francis Ray did a wonderful job with the heroine and hero's finding true love. I enjoyed the underlying story of a woman who finds the strenght to walk away from an abusive relationship, but not torn up enough to allow it to sway her from finding love the way it was so romantically rendered in in this romance tale.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsical.......2007-03-29

Another great read from Mrs. Ray.

Her stories are extraordinary, insightful and romantic. I truly admire that the majority of the men in her novels aren't your stereotypical abusive, pants sagging, drug dealing thugs. They're kind, loving, intelligent, successful and handsome men.

Lilly and Adam were meant for each other. I thanked the Lord when those two finally became an item.

I won't rest until I've read all of her books.
