Book Description

More than 80 years ago, a young scholar emigrated from Eastern Europe to Jerusalem. Not long thereafter, he received a priceless spiritual teaching that revealed the source of lasting joy and fulfillment from a spiritual master whose name he would never disclose, not even after he himself became the most renowned Kabbalist of the 20th century. The young scholar's name was Rav Yehuda Ashlag, and though his letters and writings offer tantalizing hints of the wisdom that was given to him, the pieces of the puzzle have never been fully assembled until now. Here Michael Berg, himself the descendant of great Kabbalists, shares the result of years spent studying Rav Ashlag's life and work. In this book, Berg shows how the secret offers life-changing power. Drawing on stories and insights from Ashlag and other noted mystics, Berg explains how to discover one’s true purpose in the world and thereby find lasting peace and joy.

4 out of 5 stars "The Search" by Michael Berg........2007-10-04

The book is very good. I purchased it in hardback for my wife. I believe the purchase price was $12.95. However the Shipping was nearly $18.00. This book is approximately 4"X6" and weighs maybe a couple of ounces. Unbelievable! What a RIP-OFF! I sent an e-mail to Amazon to complain, but as of today (10/03/07) I have not received a response, nor do I expect one. Needless to say this is my last purchase from Amazon. I employ over 400 workers for my company, and I made certain that they were ALL aware of this unethical business practice.

1 out of 5 stars Sharing? .......2007-08-11

Share this!, Mr. Berg. I read it in an hour, glanced back through to see if I missed something so perhaps spent an hour and fifteen or twenty minutes on drivel, ancients and wisdom, my eye. There's more philosophy in anything by Carlos Castenada on peyote. There's a saying that everytime you open a book you learn something, this is an exception to that, although I did learn for the thousandth time, Buyer Beware.

2 out of 5 stars The Secret is So So.......2007-07-13

After all the hype on this book I was disappointed in it's content. It left me feeling uninspired and the author is a bit intense and condescending. The parables were a stretch.

1 out of 5 stars Religous Subset of "The Secret".......2007-07-09

This book is focused on the religous suset of the ideas put forth in the book "The Secret" made so popular by Oprah. It is written by one of the co-authors of the latter book.

I don't think I would buy another one of these books on Kaballah, but I found this book to be interesting.

5 out of 5 stars History from the original source documents.......2007-04-27

"The Human Record" is a collection of primary source documents veering world history from the beginning of written history to about 1500 AD/CE. The text provides context for the original source documents and it typically is used as a companion text for many world history textbooks at the secondary and university levels. "Human Record" includes sample questions which either the student or teacher can utilize to help assess their comprehension of the material presented.

"Human Record" has been regularly updated with new editions that further add or refine previous editions, attesting to its enduring popularity as a resource at both the secondary and university levels. Outside of teachers and students however I cannot imagine there is much appeal. It does represent a wide cultural diversity of ethnic groups and religions rather than showing a Eurocentric perspective, but then again that's become the norm at both secondary and university levels rather than the norm.

4 out of 5 stars Textbook is good, amazon description bad.......2006-09-25

I had the same experience as another reviewer here (Todd) who received the 2nd in a series of two texts instead of the 1st, after ordering - because of incomplete information on Amazon's page. Fortunately, my professor will be assigning the 2nd text in the near future. However, given the lack of a photograph on Amazon's page, it is very difficult to determine which book one will receive after ordering. Will someone at Amazon please fix this?

1 out of 5 stars Imcomplete information for the item listed.......2006-08-29

I hate to be negative, I'm an eternal optimist with Captain Crunch and all, but this item, not featuring any sort of cover photo or volume number, is misleading. I really needed the Human Record Vol. I, 5th Ed., but was sent Human Record Vol. II. I can imagine it was an honest mistake but I will now have to buy the book for a far greater price at my college's book store. I suppose this is what happens when you try to get your education at a reasonable price hey?

4 out of 5 stars Well, we use it........2000-08-19

This is the book we use in my history class. The nice part of this text is that the authors give samples of literature from many cultures. You can see the contrasts of each civilizations and the diffrences in their beliefs of mortality, and their views on justice and social class. In all the text is well written, however the time spent on each specific culture could have been more informative. An example is the Egyptian civilization. My opinion is that more detail should have been paid to this civilization. If this book is required reading for your class, I would encourage you to buy this book through Amazon, as I paid more for my copy and it was used at that!

Cryptographic techniques have applications far beyond the obvious uses of encoding and decoding information. For Internet developers who need to know about capabilities, such as digital signatures, that depend on cryptographic techniques, there's no better overview than Applied Cryptography, the definitive book on the subject. Bruce Schneier covers general classes of cryptographic protocols and then specific techniques, detailing the inner workings of real-world cryptographic algorithms including the Data Encryption Standard and RSA public-key cryptosystems. The book includes source-code listings and extensive advice on the practical aspects of cryptography implementation, such as the importance of generating truly random numbers and of keeping keys secure.

Book Description

This new edition of the cryptography classic provides you with a comprehensive survey of modern cryptography. The book details how programmers and electronic communications professionals can use cryptography-the technique of enciphering and deciphering messages-to maintain the privacy of computer data. It describes dozens of cryptography algorithms, gives practical advice on how to implement them into cryptographic software, and shows how they can be used to solve security problems. Covering the latest developments in practical cryptographic techniques, this new edition shows programmers who design computer applications, networks, and storage systems how they can build security into their software and systems.

What's new in the Second Edition?
* New information on the Clipper Chip, including ways to defeat the key escrow mechanism
* New encryption algorithms, including algorithms from the former Soviet Union and South Africa, and the RC4 stream cipher
* The latest protocols for digital signatures, authentication, secure elections, digital cash, and more
* More detailed information on key management and cryptographic implementations

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dated but indespensible.......2007-08-02

Sadly, this book is more than a few years old. That said, it is still the finest single volume introduction to data security in the modern age. For clarity of description, for illustration, and for its success at communicating essential concepts and ideas without resorting entirely to mathematics, it is without peer.

Every so often I look on Amazon and hope that I'll find Schneier has penned a third edition, updating this work with the results of the AES selection process and all the other recent developments in this suddenly fast paced field. Alas, I don't think that's going to happen. But I'm not sure that it would really make any difference -- the field now evolves so swiftly that any detailed, thorough volume would be obsolete by the time it reaches the shelves.

So instead of looking for something more recent, pick up Applied Cryptography. Read it and keep it close at hand as a reference (mine is almost falling apart from years of loving use). Nothing presents the fundamentals as well. If you need to know about a new cipher, a new hash, a new encryption mode or protocol, that's what the Internet is for.

But to really understand the underlying ideas, techniques, challenges, risks, and rewards of cryptography, nothing finer exists.

5 out of 5 stars The unique and original applied cryptography book!.......2007-06-27

This book is extremely complete. It briefly covers the history of cryptography. It describes the political implications of cryptography and finally it shows how cryptography can be used in applications and presents the different cryptographic algorithms.

The algorithm section starts with a number theory primer.Honestly, I have found it a little bit too thin to learn all the needed background to fully understand the algorithms but on the other side, you cannot expect a simple 600 pages book to provide that background in the latest mathematical research number theories. It has at least the merit that it did stimulate my curiosity about number theory when I have read the first edition of this book.

Another point that makes this book interesting is that at the end of each chapter presenting the various algorithms in a given category, you will get Bruce Schneier opinion on which algorithm is the best. Of course, this type of information usually become outdated real fast but it is interesting to follow his thought process and test his predictions as the book grow older.

So, if you are looking for your first cryptography book, it should be this one.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read, perfect level of detail........2007-06-07

Great Book! The author's style makes this very easy to follow, and he frequently clarifies on topics which are difficult to grasp. Most importantly, he writes from a practical point of view; the material is very grounded and applicable instead of being a math textbook. That being said, he cites over 1600 sources; the book is riddled with leads to sources with more complete coverage for those interested in the fine details. Though I have some programming experience, I don't intend to write any programs; but it is interesting to read the logic in code. It was my goal to learn about modern cryptography and I have achieved that and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2007-03-12

This book is now in the thirteenth reprinting of it's second edition with more than a hundred thousand copies sold. It is the definitive book on cryptography from the standpoint of a general overview of what sending secret messages is all about. It is not specifically oriented to the developer, but is more general in nature. There is not enough here for the mathematically inclined to seriously research the background of all the various systems.

As such consider this to be an introductory book on cryptography in general with a bit of history, a bit of story telling, an analysis of various cryptographic protocols and systems. There is source code provided for nine common protocols, and an invitation to order a three disk system that has source code for several more algorithms, functions, systems and additional text on various subjects. This disk set can only be sent to US and Canada addresses because of export rules on cryptographic information.

This is the definitive book on the subject. The only complaint I have is that it could stand to be done over in a third edition that would bring it more up to date.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book for understanding Cryptography........2006-03-11

This book has really shed a lot of light on cryptography for me. I honestly can't put it down--I wish I had paid more attention in my statistics classes so I could be able to apply some of the stuff the author talks about better. I am about half way through the book, and I haven't gotten to the point where it's more of a chore than a pleasure to read it (something I can't about my other technical books).
Glancing through the C source code at the end of the book started me thinking on the code implementation in my efforts - although I used Java althrough my life. I am not much comfortable with the C code because I was hoping for more goodie examples. If you want some practical guidance..you may little bit uncomforatble as well. At the end of the day if you are serious about Cryptography then you really need to get a copy of this.

5 out of 5 stars A good book to have..........2007-05-29

As a newbie in web publishing (I've been in print for 16 years) I have yet to find a book or forum that is 100% beneficial. The forums are mediated by experienced web designers who speak their language and not the language of the beginner. Somewhere, someone (and I'd be glad to do it with proper backing) needs to write a book that says, 'Want to do (one simple function)? Use these commands. NEXT...' That would have saved me months of grief.

So I bought books and slogged through tutorials until I gleaned enough of what I wanted in order to design my pages. Tutorials NEVER cover exactly what YOU want to learn, so they can drag on forever.

As for this book, I thumbed through it at my local Borders and saw that it had a few interesting tips that I might employ in future pages. I buy books such as this even if there is only ONE tip I need, and it's worth it, even at the price some of these titles command (this also justifies Amazon Prime, by the way).

The book is from Macromedia which is a plus because you are learning the program from the company that created it. The bottom line is this: When learning this stuff, you need a reference library to depend on, and this book is a key player. Forums are great as long as the mediators are online late on a Sunday night when you're struggling to learn a new technique. Buy this book, buy lots of books and EXPERIMENT as you go...that's the best way to learn.

This review is for the book, not the CD ROM or any other Bartlett's related electronic media.
If you consider yourself well read, it will not take you long to find out where "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" fails and be somewhat disappointed. If you don't read a lot, and need the book for school or reference, it will probably be adequate.
Certainly no book of quotations can be exhaustive and Bartlett's never claims to be, their are; however, some vital literary idioms that are noticeably missing.
Having covered the book's shortcomings, I cannot point out that as a resource and reference this book can be not only helpful, but indispensable for college students.
"Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" is like the King of the Cliff's Notes research, and just like Cliff's Notes, His Majesty should never be used to replace the material it summarizes. A basic understanding of the context of the book's quotations is far more valuable then the quotes themselves.
REVIEW EVERY BOOK YOU READ! OR AT LEAST REFERENCE REGULARLY.

This book is repetitive in some ways, but the information provided is easy to understand and the food lists and menu suggestions make it easy to latch onto the concept. A good reference for diabetics and nondiabetics alike.

4 out of 5 stars Good for what it contains........2007-07-17

Good quick reference, solid information, however I thought the shopper's list would be more extensive. The information it holds is good...except it is not oriented to an American audience at this time...many brand names included are not typical American fare.

This is not a major detractor from the real information it's imparting, just annoying to find something you know you can eat, only to find you have to have it imported. Luckily time will improve all such lists as this, so I'm willing to give it 4 out of 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars No Shoppers Guide.......2007-07-03

I took it with me to the supermarket and it was of very little use. On the one hand there is too much information to wade through and the other too little. The too little is the 'guide' part. What we need is a little book with comprehensive listings only for quick reference in the supermarket aisle. I subsequently took some time to do my research, then made my own list and had it laminated!!

2 out of 5 stars Limited.......2007-05-13

The list is limited. I was expecting something more like a calorie count book, that also included the glycemic index value.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best book for beginners..........2007-08-04

I've just purchased this book and started reading it. What I've seen is that the book is divided into lessons, and each lesson has different exercises. You can follow the lessons as you were at class, with a very good learning curve. So, if you want to have a solid base on this technology, you need a lot of time to do all the examples and exercises but, when you finish the book, you KNOW Flex 2.

If you're initiated and need a reference guide, don't buy this book. In other case, this is maybe the best book for learning Flex 2 with a training way.

(Sorry for my English, I am Spanish and I've tried to write the best I could)

4 out of 5 stars GREAT book!.......2007-07-29

I wasn't too convinced about this book @ the beginning. It really is perfect for any beginners, and those seeking to get familiar w/Flex. I've been designing/coding in Flash for almost a decade now, and this book sure made the transition allot easier. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is because the examples are all related, so if you're into building up the same example as you progress thru the book, this is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Flex 2.0 Training from the Source.......2007-07-15

Invested way more time in this book than I thought I would, ... received way more value that I predicted I would.

After quite a few weeks of trying to find time to finish up the last couple of chapters in this book I am now just finding time to write a review that I thought would be completed way before now. Between the full-time job and other projects, it has been difficult to wrap this one up ... but I am glad that I did. Just in time for the v3.0.

About the Authors: At first glance of the Bios section you will know that the authors of this book are way more than qualified. Jeff Tapper was on the MAX conference stage last year and I have personally attended the Adobe Authorized Flex Train the Trainer event with Matt Boles. (excellent instructor and technical expert to say the least) The other authors I have not met but they have well recognized names in the industry.

This book is 581 pages and consists of 25 task driven chapters that walk you through an entire project from start to finish. (The Flex Grocer) It follows the traditional "Macromedia Training from the Source" format and is very well written. The TFS book series has always been a personal favorite of mine and they are typically tightly coded with consistent quality. It makes me very unhappy to imagine that the TFS books will cease to exist or even more frightfully be replaced by the Classroom in a Book series. We'll see what happens?

The book is almost error free and there is a site that the authors have published that references any errata. The book eases you into working with simple XML data structures and controls and moves you toward FDS and also includes data management with CFCs. There is a nice introduction to the value object pattern as well as ActionScript if you may be new to either of these topics. You will probably need a supplemental book if you are not familiar with ActionScript.

I had already attended the five day Flex Train the Trainer session before I started on this book and my goal of working through this book was to make sure that everything started to sink in within a reasonable time frame after attending the class. Some of the concepts or items that I found to be of high value included a refresher on event flow and event bubbling, formatters and validators, and the history manager. Lesson 18 was my first introduction to charting data in Flex and as you probably would guess, Flex makes this a cakewalk.

No doubt this book is a FIVE STAR. I am sure that the authors have plans of updating it for Flex 3.0.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step but exhausting to follow........2007-06-26

This book does a great job at providing carefully checked step by step exercises. On that level it is 5 stars. I am on chapter 8 and found no errors and I type in the code examples. However I did find unexpected results - mentioned later. There is a lot of meticulous checking to be sure the progression of the examples are correct.

The content also shows a professional developer approach to applying the technology. This does not appear to be a book written from another language's perspective such as an Actionscript programmer trying to write a Flex book. The author is focused on Flex and exposing the functionality in how you best would apply it. So I would say the content is top notch, but again I am the student and this is my professional developer gut experience making the call.

This book uses one grocery store shopping cart example all the way through. This is boring as heck to see that example chapter after chapter. Now the book does provide starting files for each chapter in case you messed up. However the authors were forced to add more and more to support the development of the application. This resulted in situations such as chapter 7 that went way overboard to complete the progression of the application to the end. Rather than focusing efforts on specifics of Flex you were repeating work to support the app. You would say enough already. Chapter 7 took me 3 hours to complete as it predicts in the beginning. It could have been writted for 1 hour and covered the lesson points about components and provided a larger variety of examples.

You also are doing things to support the progression of the application that later you undo for changing architecture. This makes understanding the application more difficult.

Despite the effort to provide start files at the beginning of each lesson, there are intermediate exercise steps with testing points within the lessons. There are no files to support you if you error or if there are errors in the exercise steps. One I came across is Lesson 8. The first "Displaying the Categories Using a HorizontalList and ItemRender" did not work for me. This prevented me from starting the next section in the lesson. I went over and over the steps. Stuck for 1 hour I finally deleted all the project files and started over and it worked. Would have been nice to have samples of what I should have had at the end of that segment, so I will not know what went wrong.

I went to the site for the book to see if there was an errata. There was not and there is no place to provide feedback for this type of item. Hey book companies (live errata like live docs moderated) increases quality of your technical products.

The book is not a sit down and read as some of the exercise steps can be as many as 20 or more. There is good annotation for the steps but not enough to read very long without becoming fully lost. I would say you cannot read any of the lessons (after the first few) all the way through and understand them without doing them and practicing.

I would not recommend using the Flex SDK to try to absorb this book. You really need Flexbuilder to be productive in following the book. The exercises can be done with just the SDK, just be prepared for a longer work period.

I see comments that the book is for advanced and then for beginners. You do have to have programming experience to follow the book.

I am an advanced Flash AS2 and now AS 3 developer. I wanted to get the gist of Flex for back end AS apps. It has been difficult with this book and I would say I am lost in the example most of the time. I have done the Quick Starts at the Adobe site which do have smaller simpler to follow exercises before I ventured into this book.

Bottom line, this is a great step by step book the shows off Flex features for building a shopping cart application. It covers a wide range of Flex features. It is error checked and provides useful commentary in the steps.

The exercises are way too long to keep focus if you follow along. There is no variety so boooooring.

5 out of 5 stars Jump into Flex!.......2007-06-20

The book is geared toward experienced developers looking to jump into Flex development. Flex can be challenging for developers who are used to the traditional page based architecture of web applications. This book does a great job of demonstrating the differences. It also briefly covers some advanced topics like shared objects and skinning. This book is not a complete guide, but it does provide a good primer so that you can easily move onto more advanced training.

Book Description

This book is the leading how-to resource for electric car conversions. It combines Brown's years of professional automotive experience with down-to-earth language even an automotive beginner can understand. It is not written for the engineer in the laboratory, but for the home mechanic building his own car, and for the average person behind the wheel. Brown speaks to the reader as if talking to a friend in his garage. Before lifting a wrench, Brown answers the most frequently asked questions about electric cars: how fast will it go, how far will it go, how long will the batteries last, how pollution-free is it really, and many more. The conversion process itself begins with choosing an appropriate donor chassis, and stripping it of internal combustion components. Here Brown's experience provide numerous tips and tricks to make the later conversion process easier and more successful. Step by step, Brown leads the reader through the conversion. As each component comes up, Brown gives a little background on the different types available, and the pros and cons of each. He includes tips on layout, design and fabrication at each step, and discusses different approaches for different chassis, such as front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive. By the end of the book, every part of the conversion process has been discussed. Brown wraps up with a procedure for testing and troubleshooting, and guidelines for normal driving, charging, and maintenance. The book is salted heavily throughout with photos and diagrams to illustrate its topics, and it includes a very thorough index. CONVERT IT has been chosen by the Department of Energy and by numerous schools across the country as the textbook for high school electric car conversion projects.

2 out of 5 stars Good Topic - VERY OUTDATED MATERIAL.......2007-07-30

The Topic is good, however the "book" is extremely disappointing. First, it states here that the book is paperback. I guess in the strictest sense that is true... however I was quite taken back when I ordered it here from Amazon.com - and received about 70 Xeroxed pages stapled together. Hardly what I expected for a "paperback". Getting past that, the material although relavent, is extremely outdated. If you want to build a high-end golf cart this might help. But if you want to delve into something modern (circa 2007) you won't find it here.
I'm sorry to sound so harse but it is the truth. I'm also sorry to say: Shame on Amazon... you shouldn't advertise this as a "paperback" when you're really selling what amounts to a handful of photocopied pages.

3 out of 5 stars Dated, but still worth the read.......2007-06-26

Nice technical data, but some of the ideas need to be updated for the next generation of home built and home converted. Would LOVE to see an update that adds some of the newer battery and hybrid ideas that are becoming more realistic for consumers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-13

This book was new and in excellent conditions. I really buy another book from Amazon. Also the shipping was very fast.

5 out of 5 stars Not just fluff.......2007-07-23

Get into the ins and outs of PV installation. This book is actually too complicated for the casual observer since there are a lot of variables to designing a workable cost efficient (well, hopefully not costing more than need be) PV system. For instance, a materials list for a 12 volt DC battery and charge controller system consist of about 80 lines. Each with their own numbers!

5 out of 5 stars Photovoltaics Design and Installation Manual.......2007-07-07

This is a low-cost and easy to read and understand book for designing and installing PV systems. I highly recommend it for interested students, engineers and contractors.

5 out of 5 stars Renuable Energy Education for a Sustainable Future.......2007-05-16

Great book, easy to understand for everyone. We all need to work toward this kind of lifestyle. Including supporting our communities, making them more levable, and buying local.

3 out of 5 stars So So Solar.......2007-05-13

Not a bad book, but it gives itself way too much credit by billing itself as a "Design and Installation Manual". This 315 page book could be condensed into a 50 page useful book entitled "A Basic Introduction to Considerations in Photovoltaic Design and Installation". It's choppy to read, and it has a lot of filler, generalities, and truisms. Expect a lot of this: "The major aspects of installing the photovoltaic array are choosing the most applicable mounting systems and making a proper installation". Some of the electrical theory is questionable. Still, it's the best book I've found, which means there is a great opportunity for a knowledgable PV systems integrator who can write well and put together a comprehensive, well-written text on the subject.

PHP and MySQL go hand in hand; the former has been carefully adapted, through the efforts of the open-source community, to the latter. For situations that require dynamic content but don't merit the complexity and development time of Java or .NET enterprise applications, the PHP language and the MySQL database server fit the bill perfectly. That's the point Hugh Williams and David Lane make in Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, which combines language tutorials with application design advice to yield a comprehensive picture of its subjects at a reasonable price. Williams and Lane--both Australian academics who use an online wine store in many of their examples--deserve tremendous kudos for their way of presenting recommended coding strategies. Though the code listings themselves aren't remarkably well commented, the authors do a commendable job of explaining in prose what the code is up to.

Case in point: The ever-essential task of using PHP to open a connection to a MySQL database, submit a query to that database, receive a response, and format the returned rows, if any. The book addresses this problem with a straight code listing, followed by text that explains what's happening in five numbered steps. Similar care goes to the other popular applications of the PHP/MySQL duo: session management, shopping carts, and authentication of users. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use the PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database engine to underlie dynamic Web sites (those that rely on database queries) and full-on Web applications, such as those that require session management and maintenance of user rosters. Tutorials in both subjects begin with the basics and proceed through moderately complicated stuff, though there's no absolutely comprehensive reference here.

Book Description

There are many reasons for serving up dynamic content from a web site: to offer an online shopping site, create customized information pages for users, or just manage a large volume of content through a database. Anyone with a modest knowledge of HTML and web site management can learn to create dynamic content through the PHP programming language and the MySQL database. This book gives you the background and tools to do the job safely and reliably. Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL, Second Edition thoroughly reflects the needs of real-world applications. It goes into detail on such practical issues as validating input (do you know what a proper credit card number looks like?), logging in users, and using templates to give your dynamic web pages a standard look. But this book goes even further. It shows how JavaScript and PHP can be used in tandem to make a user's experience faster and more pleasant. It shows the correct way to handle errors in user input so that a site looks professional. It introduces the vast collection of powerful tools available in the PEAR repository and shows how to use some of the most popular tools. Even while it serves as an introduction to new programmers, the book does not omit critical tasks that web sites require. For instance, every site that allows updates must handle the possibility of multiple users accessing data at the same time. This book explains how to solve the problem in detail with locking. Through a sophisticated sample application--Hugh and Dave's Wine Store--all the important techniques of dynamic content are introduced. Good design is emphasized, such as dividing logic from presentation. The book introduces PHP 5 and MySQL 4.1 features, while providing techniques that can be used on older versions of the software that are still in widespread use. This new edition has been redesigned around the rich offerings of PEAR. Several of these, including the Template package and the database-independent query API, are fully integrated into examples and thoroughly described in the text. Topics include:

4 out of 5 stars MySQl-PHP textbook.......2007-02-19

As usual in text books, there is a lot of useless information that is not necessary, but since writers are paid by the word, this is to be expected.

I wish there was a section on MySQL commands.

4 out of 5 stars I really like this book.......2006-11-18

I really like this book--direct, no-nonsense, and intelligently written with a minimum of jokes.

One thing that seems strange, that I'm hoping someone can clarify:

In the section of chapter 8 dealing with transactions and concurrency, there is no mention of setting transaction isolation levels (SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL command in MySQL). Instead, concurrency is achieved solely by setting table locks.

I can sort of understand this in that the authors are using MyISAM tables. But why no mention of transaction isolation levels using INNODB tables, given that this is the more standard way of dealing with concurrency issues?

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Useful.......2006-11-06

The book got me off the ground with my first client application, a rudimentary database maintenance system. Most valuable were the techniques and thorough understanding required to build a satisfactory security component.

However, it falls way short as a reference tool and could have included a more comprehensive list of mysql functions.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book.......2006-10-26

If your having trouble deciding on a book for your php & mysql development buy this book. It covers all major aspects of php and mysql web development and then some. You will find something useful on every page of this book, and theres a good amount of book here.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointingly poor index.......2006-06-28

I'm new to PHP and MySQL, but a programmer for over 3 decades. I'm customizing some PHP code, using code examples for ideas. When I (a) see something I want to understand better or (b) want to find the PHP analog for basic functions, I naturally turn to the index to try to find the information I need. However, I found the index very disappointing because of what it doesn't have. For example, simple and basic keywords are not in the index: "comment", "logical operator", "and", "or", etc. I'm going to have order a different book as a PHP reference.
