4 out of 5 stars Scenes from a revolution.......2007-05-20

This novel, although mostly a series of vignettes with only the slightet of plot and character development, never the less delivers a harrowing descripton of the Mexican Revolution.

4 out of 5 stars Revolutionaries or Bandits.......2006-09-24

Mariano Azuela's novel about a group of men fighting in the decade-long Mexican Revolution is a seminal work in Latin American literature. As the concluding essay notes, Azuela's ability to accurately depict all that is most surreal in reality was the starting point for more modern magical realist authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This is a stand-out novel written in a sparse, at times dreamlike style.

The Underdogs, or Los de Abajo, reveals Azuela's ambivalence about the Revolutionary movement. While it is clear that the men persecuting the hero, Demetrio Macias, are not the men one wants controlling the state, Azuela also doesn't hesitate to depict the revolutionaries themselves as bandits, stealing from the peasants they are supposed to defend. The conflict over whether the Mexican Revolutionaries were soldiers or bandits is one that may be found in history books. Azuela's semi-autobiographical novel doesn't offer an answer to that question, but it does provide what some of the most famous historical literature does not: a depiction of the hellishness of war. In that alone, it is a good companion reading to any nonfiction accounts of the Revolution.

Frederick Fornoff's translation is mostly well-done, though his decision not to keep in the dialect in which most of the characters speak is, in my opinion, a poor one. There was an enormous cultural divide between the average revolutionary and the Mexicans living in cities or haciendas. I feel that Azuela's original language reflected that divide. However, this edition is still worth buying, because the concluding essay on Azuela's place in Latin American and epic literature is both poignant and revealing. The Underdogs is a grand novel, for both literature and history buffs.

book is excellente. I would recommend this acclaimed book for further study anytime. I appreciate the simplicity and outright insight in the time of a heartless revolution. Please pick this book up when you have the time.

The translation or something about the way it was written made it a bit confusing at first, but once you "get" the "writing style" of the book, you will be glad you kept reading.

4 out of 5 stars Devastating and Meaningless.......2005-04-08

THE UNDERDOGS may well be about the spirit of the Mexican people, as some other reviews have suggested, but its conclusions are quite different. Don't think this is some inspiring story of the noble masses and their unconquerable spirit!

Azuela was writing in response to previous romantic depictions of the Mexican revolution -- you know, Pancho Villa the poor heroic figure of the countryside. Many had argued -- and still are, as you can see from some of these other reviews -- that the revolution was a turning point and created a new, more modern mexico.

In response, Azuela skewered the revolution. His story has almost no dates or locations -- you won't learn anything about the historical facts, as the encyclopedia would define them, of the revolution from this book. What Azuela does depict are the people and their spirit -- but he does this in shockingly unflattering terms.

Much of the book is a parade of violent scene after violent scene. Houses are ransacked, artwork destroyed, people casually killed, women casually raped. For U.S. audiences today, the book might remind us of the film NATURAL BORN KILLERS in terms of its consistent violence with little morality attached.

Moreover, these are not revolutionaries with much of an idea what they are doing. Yes, they are the underdogs of the title. But the underdogs do not want a better state -- a better nation. They mock Cervantes, the intellectual among them. No, the underdogs want to be top dog -- to exploit just as those they replace.

This devastating message is the one the book leaves us: the revolution meant nothing, achieved nothing, and was nothing but Mexico's underdogs lashing out savagely.

It is an easy and enjoyable read, but it can leave you with a Nietzchean feeling that none of this matters...

After over 25 years of working with top companies, David Morey and Scott Miller have found that the largest corporations are at their best when they act small--not as an arrogant incumbent, but a hungry insurgent. The Underdog Advantage analyzes the success of this model and shows how even great companies often stray from the insurgent path--and end up paying the consequences.

A battlefield manual for business leaders of every stripe, The Underdog Advantage uses fascinating and instructive case studies to explore insurgency principles and show you how to:

5 out of 5 stars Hit the Nail on the Head!!.......2004-09-25

After 35 years of executive experience, I continue to be struck by the lack of urgency existing in organizations today. If there's one message in this book that should be paid attention to, it is the aspect of acting with a sense or overriding urgency. Every aspect of your competitive environment demands it!!

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed........2004-09-23

Sorry, I read just too many biz books to give this 5 stars. It does have one theme which is profound, as described by others above. So I will just say that, besides that, it seems to be a jumbled mess of miscellaneous content from elsewhere woven through and through with the same "just do it, win, win, win" and "go for it, win, don't lose". The content is not original and hardly gives the reader one lick of ideas for executing anything. The football and beer commercial references get old fast and after several chapters I began to wonder if these guys ever built a business from the ground up, or did they just go rah rah rah for someone else. Lots of hindsight ... so what.

5 out of 5 stars It is the Size of the Fight in the Dog that Matters.......2004-08-18

It is now a cliché. I first heard it from a high school football coach more decades ago than I care to recall.

"It is not the size of the dog in the fight that counts," the coach said. "What matters is the size of the fight in the dog."

The principles in The Underdog Advantage build winning attitudes and character. According to authors David Morey and Scott Miller, these principles can drive your business, marketing and communications strategy. Today the incumbent, the authors say, has fewer advantages. Consumers are flooded with instant information. As a result they feel overloaded. The traditional rules of mass marketing no longer are no longer valid. In this book the authors present the key concepts of the insurgent's strategy. They also describe how to develop them into effective tactical planning.

Using the model of a political campaign, the authors, illustrate the attitudes required for today's business environment. On Election Day you either win or lose. That reality frames an organization's objectives. It creates a bolder, aggressive sprit that focuses the organization on nothing less than total victory.

Overpowering force may still dominate markets, but it is an expensive way to win. The authors note that insurgent strategies will help your organization gain ground, satisfy customers and keep happy, more productive and committed employees.

5 out of 5 stars Just the right motivation........2004-08-17

Business books can be a rather repetitive banter of "do this - get that" strategies, often very forgetable. This book was completely out of the average mold. Miller and Morey cut to the chase, keep up the beat and open the door to a different way of thinking. Whether using the overall strategies, or honing the instinctual skills, this is a must read for anyone trying to move forward in their business, their relationships, or their lives.

Book Description

A darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity is Suzan-Lori Parks latest riff on the way we are defined by history. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.

5 out of 5 stars A play that speaks about the Black experince in White America........2007-04-06

Ms. Park's play is one of the best plays I have read in a long time. her character's jump out at you and from the first page you are hooked into their lives. It focuses on the relationship between two bothers named Lincoln and Booth. The play has twists and turns and there is always a sense of danger looming. She develps both the characters and story in a very cleaver way, and uses metaphors for what a black man in today's white America may sometimes feel. As a white women I do not know what those feelings are like, but this play taught me what they may be like. read this play. It says something very important that we all should know.

Here is New York street Americana...
a tragedy of the black shattered family.
Two brothers abandoned by their father and mother
who have shifted and grafted on their own.
Lincoln shot by brother Booth...
Cain killed by Abel.
It reminded me very much of the Steinbeck short novel.
This play is a work not lovable but true.

3 out of 5 stars 90% awsome, 10% horrible.......2005-02-20

ok, the first 90 or so pages of this play are great, i like the dynamics, the writting is good, the relationship between the brothers is well portrayed. Now this is a contemporary shakespearean tragedy, so the ending is pretty obvious, and your supposed to figure out what happens pretty early in the play, if you still dont want to know however stop reading.

THE ENDING SUCKS, it reminds me of the orignal ending of clerks, in which Dante dies in a robbery, Kevin Smith discovered that the only reason he ended it that way was because he didnt know how to end his movie and wasnt tallented enough to write a good ending yet. Now i think parks is tallented, but this could have been better. The manner in which everything unravells is just not believeable. Anyone can end a tragic play with the guy everyone knew was going to die dying. Now it takes much more tallent to not kill him off. When a main character dies in the last couple moments it sends an emotional wave at the audience, death always has that effect, they dont take the time to analyze things because they are overwhelmed with the emotion of the experience. Just because it evicts an emotion everyone comes to the conclussion that it was good, smart. Killing off a character is a great way to end a trajedy if you arent inspired enough to think of anything more tragic than death. I just finished reading 20 minutes ago so im not going to trash it anymore, upon further review i might warm up to it. As for now though, there is one major error in contintuity really that ruined the ending for me, if you catch it youl probably be left scratching your head too, and unless a light bulb goes off and i figure out what just happened, i cant suggest this book.

4 out of 5 stars Gritty Angry Boy Drama.......2004-08-04

Parks' play is a well crafted drama about two brothers' lives smoothly built around their relationship with 3-card monte. She does a strong job of handling the darker aspects of sibling rivalry, poverty, and family. I mostly enjoyed Topdog/Underdog for its raw toughness and the way the two-character structure brought out the inner workings and different demons of the two brothers. While not the greatest play ever, it is a good, solid dramatic work and definitely worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Stinky Dog.......2004-07-01

About the only thing I wanted to do after seeing this was demand my money back. This has to be one of the most unimaginative plays I have ever seen. It reminded me of a really bad Saturday night live parody meets Friday part 2 but at the end the writer tried to make it poingnant by adding a death. I don't know why this was even printed. If I was a tree that lost my life to print this play I would come back as a ghost a haunt the publisher till his dying day.

      Book Description

In 1980 the Indian software industry was practically non-existent. By the 1990s the industry was one of the largest employers in manufacturing. Similar patterns of growth can be found in other emerging economies. So given that the software industry is commonly viewed as a high-tech industry,
how is it that such spectacular growth has occurred in countries where high-tech industries would not seem likely to develop? This book examines the reasons behind this phenomenon, and asks whether it suggests a new model of economic development. The contributors explore the implications of the rise
of these newcomers to the software market for the global industry, and whether there are things to be learned about the role of human capital in economic growth, firm formulation and capabilities, business and managerial models and industry structure. Chapters include country studies on Brazil,
China, India, Ireland and Israel and are complemented by cross-cutting chapters on some of the key issues highlighted by the groeth patterns of software in these nations, most notably the role of the multinational companies, the globalization of the skilled worker flows, and the formation of firm
capabilities. The novelty of the growth patterns in the regions that studied makes this book useful for understanding analytical and empirical issues underlying new microfoundations of economic growth in some emerging regions of the world.

      4 out of 5 stars I love these books.......2005-02-05

I was so delighted when I found this series. I don't normally pick mysteries, but am an avid dog-lover.
I do not agree that Melanie "...wear(s) on your nerves because she is so obstinate about EVERYTHING." She's tough; she's had to be, as most single parents do. She's also had a lot of change in her life just in the year that's taken place in the books.
This series, and author, are on my favorites list.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good but.............2002-10-28

All of Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis mysteries are entertaining and I've read most of them. My only objection is that Melanie Travis begins to wear on your nerves because she is so obstinate about EVERYTHING. There isn't just a few things she is hard headed about but everytime she comes up against something, she braces her feet. She is stubborn about her dog, her son, her job, her ex, Sam, her aunts and the list goes on. This becomes not only predictable but very boring. Melanie needs to become somewhat flexible and leave some of the pig headedness behind to make these books not only entertaining but more believable. Ms Berenson does an excellent job of transporting you to the dog show world, it's just that sometimes I wish she'd leave Melanie at home to grow up!

A wild, lyrical, and anguished autobiography, in which Charles Mingus pays short shrift to the facts but plunges to the very bottom of his psyche, coming up for air only when it pleases him. He takes the reader through his childhood in Watts, his musical education by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker, and his prodigious appetites--intellectual, culinary, and sexual. The book is a jumble, but a glorious one, by a certified American genius.

4 out of 5 stars Great literature? No, but a revealing artifact anyhow.......2007-03-11

Those looking for anything like a conventional musical bio should go to "Mingus, a Critical Biography" by Brian Priestley; "Underdog" isn't that at all; it's an artifact of Mingus' peculiar world-view at a particularly hard time in his life.

Was he mentally ill? Well, Mingus, long noted for fits of depression (after finding his first substantial success in the music industry, he nevertheless worked for the post office for a while) and a volcanic temper, channeled it for art: he was probably the first musician ever to release an album with liner notes from his psychoanalyst, and in "Underdog", he recounts checking himself into Bellvue Hospital, in an ill-considered search for "some rest". That, too, yielded him a song, "Hellview of Bellvue/Lock 'em Up", an offer of a lobotomy, and raised the interesting question: if a half-black jazz musician in 1960's America believed that people were out to steal from him and oppress him, was he acutely paranoid, just observant, or both?

Sexually escapist, and scatological? Well, yes, but before feminism, or politcal correctness, and not without pay-back: the man who bragged of trying to bury his misery in [...] and dope never finds them to be a satisfactory release, and after all the orgies, writes a tune called "Half-Mast Inhibition". . .

So, listen to the music first. See the short b&w documentary. If you want bio information or critical analysis, go to the Priestly book. Then put on "Black Saint", "Mingus Am Uh", or "Blues and Roots", and read this.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-10

I was looking for a book on his music. This book belongs in Fantasy. It is a play by play of Mr. Mingus' sex life. I have no desire to research him any further.

If you are going to read this book please be prepared to pull your pants off and get wet like a tigress inexorably, repeatedly, being stabbed in the belly by a machette. genius genius genius.......

      3 out of 5 stars Not a literary masterpiece, but not a piece.of junk........2006-04-05

To start, this book is not bad enough to turn a reader away from the whole genre. That statement is ridiculous. Charles Mingus is not a writer, the mission of this autobiography is to let the reader know what jazz's roots were. Parts of this biography are on the disturbing side.

In a postive side, the book has a meaning. It stands for all the great jazz players who were brought down by drugs and prostitution. It shows how even Charles Mingus, possible the greatest jazz bass player to ever play, was victim to this. Racism stood in the way of his success. Jazz listeners assume that because a player is currently a hero or jazz giant today, they did not have a wealthy life. Because of this, they set out to earn money on the streets through drugs and sex.

This book is not superbly written, but it allows people to realize what jazz has been through.

4 out of 5 stars How to Be a Pimp 101.......2006-03-10

A word of warning to those thinking of purchasing this book - It is not what you may think. This is not a linear autobiographical work - it is more along the lines of an exagerrated story of the pimp lifestyle and the struggles of a light skinned African American in early to mid-20th century America.

Pay attention to the 'disclaimer' in the beginning of the book:

"Some names in this book have been changed and some of the characters and incidents are fictitious."

Therefore, you must not read this book under the assumption that it is a typical jazz autobiography. I view it as more of an artform, just as I would view the music. I find BENEATH THE UNDERDOG to still be an enjoyable read, however, you must know what you are getting yourself into. The stories are all over the place, including wild stories that involve dozens of women in Mexico as well as his later frustrations concerning his time at the Bellevue mental hospital in New York City. Mingus also writes about his youth in Watts, California, specifically the fact that he did not fit in with the whites because he was black, and he did not fit in with the blacks because he was light -skinned. These issues of alienation spill over into other aspects of his life. Additionally, one could argue that the racism and alientation he suffered along with the fame he experienced are strikingly similar to Miles Davis's frustrations in his autobiographical work, MILES.

The writing style in this book is less than professional, to say the least, but it is still an entertaining read. If you would like to explore a much more solid biographical portrayal of Mingus, allow me to recommend his wife's book, TONIGHT AT NOON or the book, MINGUS: A CRITICAL BIOGRAPHY by Brian Priestly.

      Book Description

The charming Chihuahua and the pugnacious pug. The graceful greyhound, the shaggy sheepdog, and the brazen bulldog. The miraculously mesmerizing mutt. These are not the dogs that are typically celebrated in dog books—those focus on the most popular purebreds: Labrador retrievers, Jack Russells, German shepherds Dalmatians. But where are the other breeds? And where are the non-breeds that make up more than half of the U.S. dog population, the mutts? Where is their book?

If Americans love anything, it’s the underdog—every kind of underdog, whether it’s a dog or not. We recognize that beauty is more than skin deep—or fur deep. We appreciate dogs of indeterminate lineage, with mottled fur, too-large ears, or strange little bodies; we love dogs who look like impish little children or grumpy old men. Underdogs is their book—a celebration of funny faces and singular shapes, of uncommon breeds and unrecognized mixed-breeds. Underdogs is a charming, touching, and occasionally hilarious look at what we really love about dogs—the true companionship that comes from great character.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COFFEE TABLE BOOK.......2002-08-14

I found this book in a little store in a vacation spot. I thought is was the cutest, most unusal selection of dogs and sayings I've ever seen. It's the kind of book that just lifts your spirits and makes you feel good all over. A wonderful gift for any dog lover in your life. Wonderful photos and inspirational dialogue. You just want to keep picking it up and perusing the contents. Fun book!

5 out of 5 stars Keep a copy to make you smile; give one to someone you love.......2002-05-07

This delightful tome features some of the (forgive me) homeliest, funniest, sweetest-looking dogs I've seen in one place. Beautifully photographed dog portraits are paired with quotes by the famous and infamous that become witty in this context if they weren't already. This book is a great tool for meditation: every time I pick it up, I find myself contemplating a photo and a quote with a smile on my face. The cover alone is worth the price of the book, just for the happy-love endorphins it releases in me every time I look at it. (The thumbnail reproduction here on the website doesn't do it justice.)

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Art with a Sense of Humor.......2002-03-02

Jim Dratfield is at it again with a great collection of character capturing photographs. Fans of Pug Shots and the Quotable Canine & Quotable Feline should be sure to add Underdogs to their collections. The photographs are perfectly matched to witty quotes and my only complaint is that it ended too soon. I gaurantee that this book will be found on the shelf of every dog lover (especially those of us who prefer the less popular breeds and the mutts of the world). Good work Jim!

4 out of 5 stars Reintroduction to a Mystery Master.......2005-06-02

I haven't read Agatha Christie since junior high or so, and I recall her writing as equal parts frustration -- tying my brain in a knot -- and exhilaration -- even if I didn't scry the mystery, I felt smarter for having read Christie. Not wanting to jump back into her writing with what I was sure was going to be a convoluted, complex, and complicated full-length novel, I wanted to reintroduce myself to the world of Hercule Poirot with some shorter-form fiction. Hence, "The Under Dog and Other Stories."

Christie's writing isn't as tangled as I remembered -- and while I still feel smarter having read her, I'm just as frustrated by my inability to be one step ahead of the Belgian detective. There are nine stories here, ranging between 12 and 70 pages in length. And they're all satisfying. My favorites include "The Under Dog" and "The Plymouth Express," but they all have their charm.

One major irritation: In this Berkley paperback edition, the editors opted to insert little text bits before the end of several stories that state something akin to, "It is suggested that the reader pause in his perusal of the story at this point, make his own solution of the mystery -- and then see how close he comes to that of the author."

Christie isn't a juvenile writer, and her work deserves less juvenile treatment. Thoughtful readers will take pause regardless of the editors recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars The Usual Good Fun from Agatha Christie.......2000-09-14

This book is good for a quick jump into the realm of good murder mysteries. The stories can be read in 15 to 25 minutes, for those of us without enough time to fully appreciate a full length novel. They are however engaging, fun, and nicely thought out. The title story (The Under Dog) is the longest and in my mind the best, as Mrs. Christie had more pages for charater development and story twists. Our favorite detective, Hercule Poirot is featured in all of the stories with multiple appearances of Captain Hastings. Each story had me wondering until the last page. Definately recomended as a before bed reading.

      Book Description

Behold the mutt, not only the most popular “breed” in America—comprising 60 percent of the dogs owned by this nation of dog lovers—but also one of the hottest. A lively magnum opus of mutts, The Underdog marries appreciation and practical care in an unexpected book, illustrated throughout with soulful work from artists and photographers like Bruce Weber, Mary Ellen Mark, Robert Risko, Marisa Acocella, and Danny Gregory. Learn mutt history and lore and meet famous mutts, past and present. Celebrate cinematic and literary mutts. Discover the “Mutt Family Tree”—profiles and photos of 75 classic mutt types, from the Rottie mix to the “Heinz 57” (your guess is as good as anyone’s). Plus how mutts differ from their purebred cousins (they tend to live longer, for one thing) and how to be the very best mutt parent you can be, with a comprehensive nuts-and-bolts primer beginning with how to choose your mutt. An appendix connects mutt owners to a universe of products and services, from the only dog seat belt worth buying to the ritziest doggie day care facilities.

As fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi said, “A mutt is couture—it’s the only one like it in the world, made especially for you.”

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate the Mutt!.......2007-04-09

The Underdog is a delightful read especially for all of us who find our special dogs of mysterious ancestry and take them into our homes and our hearts!

5 out of 5 stars Great read full of useful info and lots of hilarious dog pictures!.......2007-02-02

This book is a must for dog lovers. It's full of information about adoption (the ethical choice for bringing a dog into your life as opposed to puppy mill dogs from the pet shop) and tells you exactly how to do it, where to go, what you need, and how to handle the new dog once he is brought home. It really is THE step by step book on the shelter adoption process.

The celebration of mutts in this book is infectious. The pictures are hilarious and one can't help but laugh while learning all kinds of interesting trivia about these lovable mutts.

The author does a terrific job of helping you figure out what kind of mutt is sharing your life. Extremely well researched, this book is a great read because you can pick it up anywhere and enjoy.

A wonderful gift book for dog lovers and for people who are thinking of sharing their life with the greatest friends on the planet! Timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Sets the record straight on many mutt myths.......2006-08-02

What a fun book! Szabo does a great job organizing her book into fun-to-read segments interspersed with news articles, editorials, and pictures of cutie-pie pups. I thought I knew almost everything about mutts after adopting them (through a shelter and off the street) and after spending significant time at our local humane society. Nope -- Szabo taught me the cons of "no-kill" shelters and changed my personal definition of what constitutes a "Mutt." Furthermore, she brings to light several little-known, important facts about the "designer" dogs (such as the doodles).

This book is also a wonderful guide for anyone considering adopting a mutt, pure breed, or "designer" dog.

Remember: Spay and Neuter your pets! There is no reason you should have an intact animal unless you are a certified breeder.

5 out of 5 stars The Underdog: A Celebration of Mutts.......2006-07-10

What a wonderful book on dogs who have mixed lineage. I have a wonderful mutt and what the book says about having the good qualities of the breeds is very right. At times, though the qualities that aren't so great come up. The book is very well written and is a must for anyone who has ever had a loveable mutt. Those who have never had a "mixed breed" should think about it. There are many at the local shelters to be adopted.
You who are thinking of getting a dog this is a must read.
Those of you who are buying the book.....Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful and entertaining book!.......2006-01-10

Finally mutts get the respect that they deserve! A wonderful book packed with both useful and fun information. Be sure to check out the "Mutt Family Tree" section. I have three mutts and always enjoy trying to figure out "the mystery of the mix".
