Book Description

A brand-new novel in the number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series set in 2059 New York City. As technology and humanity collide, Detective Eve Dallas searches the darkest corners of Manhattan for an elusive killer with a passion for collecting souls...

On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park-and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of the lake. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes-removed with such precision, as if done with the careful hands of a surgeon-that have Dallas most alarmed.

As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers. Against her instincts, she accepts help from a psychic who offers one vision after another-each with shockingly accurate details of the murders. And when partner and friend Peabody is badly injured after escaping an attack, the stakes are raised. Are the eyes a symbol? A twisted religious ritual? A souvenir? With help from her husband, Roarke, Dallas must uncover the killer's motivation before another vision becomes another nightmare. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Born In Death.......2007-05-06

I hope this is not the last of this series. I really enjoy reading about these characters and the timeline in which they live. The passion between Roark and Eve is so intense; and yet they always get the job done. I love the time, the house, the plots, their friends, and the possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better!.......2007-04-11

I am absolutely hooked on the "In Death" series by JD Robb (AKA Nora Roberts). I think that they are fresh, creative and entertaining. I really love the characters and look forward to what will happen with them next. This installment has everything that makes for a good read.....The plot is simple without giving too much away.....there is a psychopath/sociopath who is beating, multilating and killing brown haired girls in New York in the year 2059. He leaves his victims with red ribbons tied around their necks and their eyes removed. Yikes. Meanwhile, you have a psychic (Celina)who is attempting to assist Lieutenant Dallas decipher who is responsible for the deaths and why? But as you watch Eve unravel the mystery, you are able to see those characters that we have come to love so much, as well as see Eve and Roarke's love blossom and grow stronger. And any visit with Eve, Peabody, McNabb, Roarke, Mavis and Summerset is definately worth a read. I can't wait to read the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Someone's killing women..........2007-04-01

...and it's up to Eve Dallas to find out why. This time, she's working with a psychic, and not so sure she's happy about it. But the women's visions are proving accurate. Will it be enough to catch the killer?

Another wonderful addition to the Eve and Roarke saga.

5 out of 5 stars My First J. D. Robb.......2006-08-29

I have enjoyed Nora Robert's books for a long time and this is my first experience with J. D. Robb. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the relationships Eve Dallas has, especially with Roarke. Her inner battle with her past makes her more human. Her pain is evident. On a lighter note, I especially loved the section where she and Roarke are talking about being coaches to their friend who is having a baby. I read it to my husband and we laughed. This is a mystery after all but having a section like that in the book was refreshing. I look forward to reading more J. D. Robb. Peace Always.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed In Death.......2006-08-11

I have read every single 'In Death' book, and I have to say this is my least favorite of them all. There was hardly any focus on the main characters that we have come to know and love, and a killer that came out of nowwhere. I always look forward to the next episode in Eve & Roarke's life, and I hope the next one is better.

Book Description

Death is one of life's greatest mysteries. Over the years, the bestseller lists have contained many works on death-related phenomena: Betty Eadie's Embraced by the Light; James Van Praagh's Talking to Heaven; and Raymond Moodie's Life After Life, are just a few. One Last Hug Before I Go is the first book to explore in depth the Deathbed Vision (DBV). Complete with the author's own encounters and those of over forty other DBV experiencers, this revolutionary work provides research information from the early twentieth century through the present. Included are: survivors' detailed accounts of their departed loved one's visions and final words; the survivors' mystical experiences and premonitions preceding a loved one's passing; accounts of seeing the soul leave the body; and after-death communications. These final words and visions from the dying provide a poignant, final farewell hug to loved ones, offering peace of mind and hope for an eventual reunion. After finishing this fascinating book, readers will come away with a better understanding and acceptance of the process of death and see it as a spiritual adventure, not a sad and fearful ending to life.

This was an excellent book. Very easy to follow and very interesting. I wish she would write another. A must read regarding Death Bed Visions.

5 out of 5 stars The most credible of all on this topic.....and the afterlife.......2002-02-19

This book provides far more than just research. There are some very intriguing parallels to all the documented cases.

This book is written in a way that it maintains the interest of the existing "Believer" and captures the interest of the curious and perhaps skeptic. Every reader can relate to some witnessed event in this book. Perhaps not aware of what may have taking place at the time....now enlightened.

I found this refreshingly real and hard to put down Especially in comparison to other popular books about the afterlife that had a commercial edge and were almost trying to "sell" a belief.

Dr. Carla has an impressive fan club of people like myself that respect her for her Spiritual insight and general wisdom of well being. I actually reccommend all of her books. She's pretty multi-tasked!

2 out of 5 stars Important topic marred by amateurish writing.......2001-03-27

I have to agree with another reviewer regarding the substance of this book, or lack thereof; this is a fascinating topic and although the author included some interesting case studies her overuse of irrelevant filler and 'homey' writing style was a real turn-off. If you're looking for a credible, objective analysis of the DBV phenomenon and original research, look elsewhere. You're much better off reading "What They Saw at the Hour of Death", which is where this author got most of her information.Disappointing...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-11-30

This is the first book I read on the subject and I really liked it. Dr. Carla lists tens of Death Bed Visions which are indeed convincing and beautiful. They make you realize that death is not that horrible and frightening at all. The dying person sees deceased relatives, angels, and loved ones and actually wants to go to them. They see the wonderful light that awaits for them on the other side and they see that [over there] there is nothing to be afraid of. After you read this book you will understand how unfair it is that society does not accept the DBVs and the death subject in general. How our own religion rejects them, and wonder why, since they preach that death is not the end! Let alone the scientists (and stay away from most of them) who always find a...scientific answer for every question. But as beautifully stated in the book already, if those visions are only by-products of the dying brain, how come the dying person sees only deceased ones, and never loved ones who are still alive?

I only wish I had this book when my beloved grandmother died and was so much frightened of death. I would be able to explain her a few things I learned from this wonderful book, and provide her some comfort.

It is amazing. It proved that we don't die alone at all, but a beloved deceased person or persons are there, waiting to help us make it to the other side and we are happy to reunite with them!

Book Description

Documented throughout time and across cultures, dreams experienced by those on the verge of death can offer profound insight into the process of dying and provide deep spiritual solace for the individual passing away. In Dreaming Beyond Death, Kelly Bulkeley and Patricia Bulkley bring together their diverse areas of expertise to create a guide to pre-death dreams that offers practical advice and provides a broader understanding of this phenomenon. Drawing from a rich understanding of dreaming in culture, history, psychology, and through modern dream study, this book explicitly addresses three common aspects of pre-death dreams and offers interpretations that will aid both the dying person and the caregiver. Rev. Patricia Bulkley_s experience with the transformative possibilities of pre-death dreams as a hospice spiritual counselor lend this book a deeply personal and human touch, while Kelly Bulkeley_s insightful analysis and intellectual framework make it easy to understand the deeper meanings behind this type of dreaming. A final chapter provides resources and concrete methods for a caregiver to respectfully guide a dying person through the dreaming process and, ultimately, to a sense of peace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Help for the dying and their caregivers.......2006-02-01

This excellent title helps people to understand the types of dreams that people have prior to dying- and how to honor and use the messages that come with these dreams. It will be particularly useful for family and friend caregivers who may not understand the importance of dreams in preparing a person for death and how dreams can bring meaning and peace to the process. It provides also a very short, yet incredibly useful, introduction on how to interpret dreams in general. This title is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Dreaming?.......2005-10-18

While, I have heard the contention that dreams serve a purpose of helping a person deal with events in their life, I cannot recall any that have accomplished that in my life. The book mentions that category and I wish some time had been spent on that subject. As far as the book went, I found the various experiences of case histories fascinating. Especially the one of Socrates, in which the dream was actually prophetic.

5 out of 5 stars Gift of the Red Bird.......2006-08-13

Very inspirational. I was totally filled with the Holy Spirit. I think I would like to go on a retreat like that. We have so much to learn. Please try it.

5 out of 5 stars Short but beautiful book . . ........2006-04-21

Gift of the Red Bird, a Spiritual Encounter, reads like a journal from Paula D'Arcy's life. On August 18, 1975, on a return trip home to Connecticut, Paula's car was struck by a drunk motorist. Her daughter, Sarah, died of head injuries on August 20, and her husband died three days later from a ruptured spleen. Paula was alive and three months pregnant with her second baby daughter, Beth. For this reason, she went on living.

Gift of the Red Bird tells of a story of extreme loss and ache, of searching for answers, of making sense out of the pain, and of looking for some light in the darkness.

This is Paula's journey, and when she goes on a wilderness retreat -- where it's just her, God, and nature -- she begins to get some comfort for her wounds.

A deeply moving narrative, this book may be short, but the message is deep and lasting. It's a journey well worth taking for anyone who has ever had a tragedy hit their lives where they've had the same questions.

The Art of the Horus Heresy books have until now had high production values and interesting art work. But in attempting to stretch the series to 4 volumes they obviously ran out of material. The story and artwork end 2/3 of the way through this book, the remainder is thumbnail-sized reprints of trading cards, almost too small to read. Even some of the story is reprinted from old White Dwarf articles.

This last volume contains the climax of the story (hint, the Emperor wins) and some new plot points but ultimately is padded. The card reprints mean nothing to me and I doubt would even please the CCG players. If you're considering buying this book you probably are a GW fan and already familiar with what will happen. So skip it.

Product Description

In 1988, readers and reviewers hailed the First Edition of The Book of Azrael "the most fascinating book of the 20th century". A 16 years Best Seller of occult non-fiction, it sparked a subtle revolution in the way we deal with death in general, and Death the entity. It brought us up close and personal with the melancholy spectre commonly known as the Grim Reaper. The book's aim is to bring humanity to a greater understanding of His purpose here, and hereafter. This latest edition of OUR NAME IS MELANCHOLY - The Complete Books of Azrael has been revised, re-edited and expanded to include an all-new Book 3 and 4 as well as additions to the original manuscript. Through the Angel of Death's own words and the writings of His incarnate soul mate, this awesome spirit reveals to all His true nature and purpose. A haunting "autobiography" of the Angel of Death, this revelationary testament is both mighty in sorrow, and joy. Azrael is an eerie herald who has come to enchant the world with a divine danse macabre. For the ultimate tale of Love and Death is, indeed, a True Story.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for everybody.......2005-12-07

Our Name is Melancholy is a strange book, because it's more than just a book. In one sense it's a declaration of love from Leilah Wendell to Azrael, the angel of Death. On the other hand it's a declaration of love from Azrael to Wendell. It's also a biography of Wendell's life and childhood, how and why she founded Westgate and opened the House of Death in New Orleans. Furthermore, it has attributions from Wendell's husband Daniel Kemp. And, it's filled with spiritual discussions about the true nature of Death and what happens when our lives on earth finally come to an end.

Does this confuse you? Good, because it really IS confusing. Put shortly, Wendell's relation with the angel of Death, which she has met both physically and spiritually (whatever that means) is quite unusual. Azrael is her one true love; but in this life in this body she's married to Daniel Kemp, who she lives with in the House of Death.

Not surprisingly, Wendell isn't afraid of death - after all, she and it shares something so special that she's unable to really describe it in words - but still, Our Name is Melancholy is definitely not a pro-suicide book. What Wendell tries to explain is that we don't really have any real reason to fear death, since it's not an evil thing in itself. Whether or not one chooses to believe in this is up to the reader, but the message isn't very much different from other books of the New Age that all talk about how this particular life on earth is but one of many lives).

Hmm... Well, that might be, but the truth is that in case you don't really care much about the New Age in general and spirituality in particular, then Our Name is Melancholy probably isn't the right book for you.

However, the declarations of love that appear throughout the book are written in very beautiful English. The words chosen by Wendell, Azrael (through Wendell) and Kemp are all very delicate and exquisite, and most of the time it feels as if one is reading a collection of love poems. The authors are very skilled in what they're doing, no doubt about that, but is this enough for anyone to invest in the book? Maybe, maybe not. Westgate has published other works that are real collections of poems, and if it's poems you want, than maybe these books are a better choice (for instance Eros in Exile). But in case you want to learn more about Wendell, Kemp, their view of Death, and the House of Death, then the book can be worth looking up.

3 out of 5 stars Still Pondering This One............................2004-09-30

I am a huge fan of raw channeled work. But even this one raised my brows more than a few times. The poetry in this book is nice, the art work gothic and dark which I liked as well, but it's a hard read at best. There are a LOT of grammar errors in this book. It appears to be self edited by Leilah Wendell AKA Westgate Press, but I have to give her an A for the effort there.

This is a hard read, even for someone like me who holds several doctrines. It is an intimate portrayal of the author and the "Death Angels" relationship. I could have found it plausible had she given some form of validating information, but she did not. You would think that "Azrael" would have given her at least one outstanding futuristic validation, but atlas there are none. I also found the rituals in the back for Necromancy a bit unnerving. This certainly isn't a book for the weak hearted or closed minded :P .

With that said I am giving this book three stars for it's poetry and art work. I would buy at least one future work from this author if she could provide some form of validation in it.

2 out of 5 stars What time is it?.......2004-07-29

This was the first book of Ms Wendell that I attempted to read. I never finished it. About two-thirds of the way through I got, to put it mildly, bored...and confused.
Maybe it's me, suspicious satanist that I am, but the overall effect of this hodgepodge present-future-past-future tense book on the mystery of DEATH is nothing really new. In the seventies there were a slew of 'em, most notable Jane Roberts SETH books. These were books that attempted to define, or clarify, or capitalize($$) on the inherent desire of understanding things whoose existance mystified and magnified our reason for being.
Here Ms Wendell takes on the collective entity known as DEATH, personifying it through past-present-past-future-present storylines, which at best is so-so psychological fiction...at worst she's a writer who's story timelines form a gordian knot rather than a mobius strip.
If you want to understand the true nature of DEATH in all its guises study the CLASSICS in Literature...writing books is nothing more than a artists way to come to terms with his/her own demise, and somehow outlive ones mortality through enshrinement in a Library.
When Ms Wendell gives-up-the-ghost Azrael goes with her.

5 out of 5 stars With the enthralling hand of a poet ..........2003-06-17

Leilah Wendall has woven a tome of wondrous beauty and magic, sharing with us the true nature of the Being known as Azrael, the Angel of Death. Taking us back through many lives lived, and shared through the eyes and words of this mighty Angel, we come to know Him not as a fearsome creature of mythical legend, but a compassionate Being willing to take us within the gentle and cold embrace of His wings. Their hauntingly penned words gracefully intertwine allowing one to see past their deepest fears surrounding the mystery of Death as we know it. This is truly a compelling book and unlike any I've ever before encountered. With a great love and wisdom shared, and lushly illustrated, 'Our Name is Melancholy...' is a wondrous read to soothe the searching soul.

Parting Visions was originally published in 1992 and parts of it are seriously out of date with current studies. For example, the author writes about Therapeutic Touch, the so-called ability of a practitioner of such to manipulate a person's aura. Several years ago, a nine-year-old girl created a science fair project that thoroughly debunked this practice as mere wishful thinking.

The beginning of this book was more interesting and veritable in that it focused more on visions experienced by people very close to death, a common and well-respected phenomenon of the dying process. The author, a pediatrician with no overwhelming religious beliefs, had sufficient experience from witnessing the deaths of many children (the topic of his earlier book) to understand that there are too many similarities in the visions the dying related for them to be mere hallucinations or the products of brains starving for oxygen. And he also believes that these visions form a purpose in relieving the fears of both the dying and their loved ones. No one, least of all me, can argue with this.

But then the book devolves into religious gobbledygook and affirmations that these visions, especially shared ones and premonitions of death, are proof of God's existence, rather than a phenomenon that exists irrespective of any religious beliefs. Many of his later examples of empirical testing leave much lacking in the area of scientific scrutiny.

The book also suffers from far too much repetition of ideas and examples and an outpouring of too much eagerness in the effort to "prove" a scientific basis for near-death experiences. Eventually, I had to give up on attributing too much veracity to the entire book.

5 out of 5 stars Fast moving,facinating,absorbing,comforting........1998-06-05

Reminds us that we are spiritual beings having a relatively brief human experience before returning to our real & eternal home. Reinforces that spirituality is truely present in everyone and transcends all earthly religions. Many wonderful stories throughout the book to support the love and freedom that our beloved deceased have found. Death will kill the body but not the soul. We can grieve the ugliness of earthly disease and death, but we cannot grieve about the love present in the hereafter. EN

Book Description

Bernadette of Lourdes: her life, death and visions is the first ever scholarly biography of Bernadette Soubirous, either in French or in English. It draws upon many testimonies and archival sources that have never previously been published. ThTrFse Taylor explains who Bernadette was, and how she lived and died but takes no position on whether or not her visions were genuine.

This story begins in Bernadette's native country of the Pyrenees, a mountain region haunted by tales of fairies, witches and miraculous groves and springs. It follows Bernadette's astonishing life story, from her family circle, through her years of fame, to her retirement at the convent of St Gildard at Nevers. Her difficult relationships with the historians of Lourdes and her lengthy terminal illness are also considered.

This biography places Bernadette in the context of her time. She was born into a volatile family and her parent's lives were blighted by economic failure and alcoholism. At the age of fourteen Bernadette was an illiterate child-servant, who suddenly experienced a series of visions of a White Lady in the Grotto of Massabielle. Townspeople, government officials, clergy and journalists were all drawn in, and sought out Bernadette in order to assess her story. A chain of events was set off which made her one of the most famous women in France. Bernadette has to be understood not only in religious terms, but also with reference to themes such as tourism, commercialism, mass-representation and the exploitation of female celebrities.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book.......2003-11-19

Therese Taylor succeeds in drawing a full, persuasive portrait of Bernadette Soubirous, a nineteenth century French girl who made the village of Lourdes famous throughout the Christian world. But Dr. Taylor carries the story to its end, finishing not with the immediate aftermath of the apparitions, but to the close of Bernadette's difficult life in a convent in Nevers. This Bernadette was far from what one would imagine a visionary to be. She was sober, honest to a fault, and vehemently set against becoming an object of adoration herself. Curious prelates and nuns tested her patience when they demanded more and more details of what Bernadette had seen. She refused, saying that to embelish is to distort. This laconic posture cost her some popularity in the convent, but Bernadette rejected the notion of having an audience to whom to play. In a sense, her almost flinty integrity gives the best witness to the truth of what she reported she saw. And what she saw or not remains a matter of faith. Dr. Taylor adds this volume to the small library of books that honors the saints through thorough and respectful biography, not sentimental hagiography. She is also as fine a writer as one could wish.

Historical, incredibly detailed and scholarly account of the life of Bernadette Soubirous and the history of the Grotto at Massabielle.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ms. Fenimore.......2007-02-02

I had my own NDE and while my experience was different than Ms. Fenimores', I can truly say that the love and peace she so eloquently describes are very real. While I did not have the privilege of speaking with anyone, I was spoken to (very briefly). I felt the total love and acceptance that is ours in Christ. I knew of the sacrifice that He made for us all, and the desire of His heart that all be saved. In reference to another reviewer, God does not condemn anyone to hell. Everyone has to make the choice and God will not override that choice. We condemn ourselves when we reject the truth of God's love and compassion. Make no mistake, even though it makes no sense to the natural mind, God loves each of his creatures with a love that surpasses anything we can possibly imagine. He is greatly saddened and angered when we make the choice to reject His love, but for His own reasons He will not force anything upon us. I don't pretend to understand, but I know that it is true and real. I felt the book was very well-written, and conveyed the true horror of her life. I also couldn't put it down. Thank you for having the courage to write about the reality of hell.

5 out of 5 stars I am the author.......2007-01-14

I wrote Beyond the Darkness and would like to let readers be aware that there is a publisher typo that, in my opinion, changes context dramatically. On page 101, it reads, "great" white beard and actually should read that He had a "neat" white beard. There are a few other typos, but this is the one that I feel is important.

4 out of 5 stars God from another planet ... that just may be possibly so!!!.......2005-12-08

A reviewer below calls this work of literature fraudulent because, among other things, it states that God once had a physical body while living on another world. Its irrelevant to me whether or not this book is true, but that the author was daring enough to speculate on the true nature of God, which she believes to be another human being like us, albeit now way far advanced spiritually beyond any Earth human. There are those fundamentalists that believe in the inerrancy of the New Testament, but in fact much of the New Testament is itself fiction ... just read some scholarly works on the Bible for yourself. Anyway, hands-down to Angie Fenimore for daring to make God finite and concrete to us all, in place of the infinite, abstract "unknowable" God that we are culturally led to believe in.

I found this book to be well written. You can't believe everything you read especially if it is only one person's account of it. I can't say that this is a bad book because I may not believe what the arthur, Fenimore, believed to be her reality. The book was a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. Recommended for a fasinating read.

1 out of 5 stars Seriously fraudulent.......2005-10-13

This is a story of a troubled woman's struggle with life and death. Sadly, she attempts suicide and is given a glimpse of "purgatory, God, and Jesus." Angie Fenimore's assessment of each of these is far from Biblically accurate. Among the many shocks I had while reading this book is her comment that God has a physical body and was once a human on another planet! She touts karma, reincarnation, and purgatory. There is certainly an agenda in this book and it isn't pointing to Jesus Christ.
