Book Description

Has any comic been as acclaimed as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen? Possibly only Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, but Watchmen remains the critics' favorite. Why? Because Moore is a better writer, and Watchmen a more complex and dark and literate creation than Miller's fantastic, subversive take on the Batman myth. Moore, renowned for many other of the genre's finest creations (Saga of the Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, and From Hell, with Eddie Campbell) first put out Watchmen in 12 issues for DC in 1986-87. It won a comic award at the time (the 1987 Jack Kirby Comics Industry Awards for Best Writer/Artist combination) and has continued to gather praise since. The story concerns a group called the Crimebusters and a plot to kill and discredit them. Moore's characterization is as sophisticated as any novel's. Importantly the costumes do not get in the way of the storytelling; rather they allow Moore to investigate issues of power and control--indeed it was Watchmen, and to a lesser extent Dark Knight, that propelled the comic genre forward, making "adult" comics a reality. The artwork of Gibbons (best known for 2000AD's Rogue Trooper and DC's Green Lantern) is very fine too, echoing Moore's paranoid mood perfectly throughout. Packed with symbolism, some of the overlying themes (arms control, nuclear threat, vigilantes) have dated but the intelligent social and political commentary, the structure of the story itself, its intertextuality (chapters appended with excerpts from other "works" and "studies" on Moore's characters, or with excerpts from another comic book being read by a child within the story), the finepace of the writing and its humanity mean that Watchmen more than stands up--it keeps its crown as the best the genre has yet produced. --MarkThwaite

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary effort -- Moore's best.......2007-10-03

"The Watchmen" is a tour de force of the graphic novel genre, showing Alan Moore at his best. Moore invents a graphic universe, with a unique cast of characters whose interesting histories and personalities add complexity and fascination to the entire book.

The central character of the work ("hero" is too happy a term) is "Rorschach," a psychopathic masked avenger who is tracking down whoever is killing off a cast of masked former crime fighters, who are now in middle age if now retirement. In the world of The Watchmen, "adventuring" by masked vigilantes has been made illegal. Most of the superheroes have gone along with the law, and have more-or-less happily hung up their masks, cowls and crime-fighting devices to attempt the uneasy adjustment to normal life. Moore creates a complete reality that spans generations, where now-elderly retired crime fighters have passed the baton to a younger (now middle-aged) generation. But the stirrings of adventure lie just below the surface, and it doesn't take much perturbation to bring them to the surface.

Moore's heroes seem familiar, but they're not. Night Owl, a paunchy and bespectacled nerd, wears around in a slightly-ludicrous owl costume, complete with wings and night-vision goggles. In a bit of (I think) intentional humor, his arctic outfit is actually shaped and colored to resemble a snowy owl. Ozymandias is a wealthy acrobat, obsessed with ancient Egypt, and now spins his former glory (via toys and merchandise) into gold. Silk Specter, a leggy beauty 15 years younger than the rest, is living with Doctor Manhattan, a scientist whose 1959 turn in a radiation chamber that rendered him, naked, blue, emotionally tone-deaf, and with the godlike ability to transfer between worlds and dimensions. Not to mention that he likes to go around without clothes.

The story starts with the gruesome death of The Comedian by persons unknown. After the cops leave, Rorschach arrives (through the broken high-rise from which the victim made his unintended exit) and the fun begins. The rest of the novel spins a story of dark personal secrets, an not-so-innocent world unaware of impending danger, and the desire to take up old passions -- all set against a world in which political powers are posturing and threatening each other with annihilation. The heroes spend a great deal of time dealing with their personal issues -- former loves, the loss of friends, parenthood and aging -- while wondering whether and how to engage in the growing turmoil around them.

Moore's heroes are not bound by the rules of "good guy" niceness that we might expect in comic books. They curse, intimidate, attack, manipulate, act psychopathic and work outside the rules, leaving behind a high body count. It's no wonder they were outlawed by more decent people. The strip deals with quite dark issues -- warfare, murder, rape, abandonment, even free will and determinism. It is extremely violent, sexy and rough -- way too much for even the PG-13 crowd. The story is told as an interlocking and overlapping narrative, with lots of meaningful repetition, flashbacks ad even a tragic comic-within-a-comic whose plot mirrors the novel's own. The plot is fascinating, and will keep your reading -- though much too quickly to grasp every detail. Like any good book, this one needs to be read and reread to catch the way it plays with history and characters.

I could go on and on. "The Watchmen" is an unexpected masterpiece, taking the comic book form far from its banal origins, to tell a tale that is repellent and fascinating and extremely well-executed. It's one of the books you must read before you die.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome character development, ingenuous story.......2007-09-29

Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons is my absolute favorite graphic novel. I just finished re-reading it. It's actually the comic that inspired all of my magical approaches to using comics as a magical tool/technique. I'm also always amazed at just how in-depth the story is...how much detail is put into the characters, even the minor ones.

I also have my favorite characters, which are the Comedian, Rorschach, and Ozymandias. I like all of them because they stand out as fairly unique characters even in a comic book that already has unique characters. They have very distinctive personalities...

The comedian is a very amoral character and that amorality allows him to embrace perspectives that enable him to move past situations that would stop people. He knows his nature and utterly accepts without the moral qualms that many people would have. I like his character not because of his actions, but because he is so at peace with who and what he is.

Rorschach...well my favorite scene is where someone attacks him and he uses only his shirt to essentially trap the person...your hands, my perspective. Again his is a perspective that allows him to see past the obvious constraints and find solutions where other people won't go.

And ozymandias embodies lateral thinking overall...again that perspective, that way of taking a situation and turning it from a disaster into something else. Plus a continued focus on improving himself, being able to see what he can do...and not letting limitations stop him.

I admire anyone who takes a different perspective and makes it work.

Good book...go read it if you haven't...cause it definitely applies to the post 9/11 world.

What can I say that hasn't been said already. This is the "Hamlet" of the comic book world. The "Godfather" of comics, if you will. The "Moving Pictures" of the comic book industry. What Moore and Gibbons have crafted here is a wonder unrivaled in the comics world. The sheer level of detail that they put into their work is astounding. Literally every single panel on every single page contains something important, some detail that if noticed, will make the reading experience that much more magical. I savored over this book for about two weeks before I finished it. It took me about two hours per chapter. This isn't the type of book that you can just breeze through, like many of today's comics. You will find yourself deeply drawn into this world and the lives of its characters. They will become like old friends to you. The mystery, the intrigue, the action...its all fantastic. You are in for a fantastic experience when you read The Watchmen.

After hearing that the book THE WATCHMEN is at last being made into a movie, I thought now was a good time to reread it and see how it would stand up today. I first read this back in the late 80's and it is just as mind catching a story as it was then. Still love it. Hope the movie does the book justice....but why wait for the movie READ THE BOOK FIRST! Book Description

Donna Leon opens doors to the hidden Venice like no one else. With her latest novel, Through a Glass, Darkly, Leon takes us inside the secretive island of Murano, home of the world-famous glass factories. On a luminous spring day in Venice, Commissario Brunetti and his assistant Vianello play hooky from the Questura in order to help Vianello's friend Marco Ribetti, arrested during an environmental protest. They secure his release, only to be faced by the fury of the man's father-in-law, Giovanni De Cal, a cantankerous glass factory owner who has been heard in the bars of Murano making violent threats about Ribetti. Brunetti's curiosity is piqued, and he finds himself drawn to Murano to investigate. Is De Cal the type of man to carry out his threats? Then one morning the body of De Cal's night watchman is found. Over long lunches, on secret boat rides, in quiet bars, and down narrow streets, Brunetti searches for the killer. Will he unravel the clues before the night watchman's death is allowed to be forgotten?

A fascinating novel set in the intersection between tourism and native Venetian society, Through a Glass, Darkly is Donna Leon at her finest.

4 out of 5 stars You've heard of Italian "slow food"? Now welcome the Venetian "slow book".......2007-05-24

As someone who is interested in Italy and books, it was only a matter of time before I read a Commissario Brunetti tale. But I guess I should have done my homework first, as it seems that this was probably the wrong place to start. Sheesh, even devoted Donna Leon fans seem upset about THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY.

This is not to diminish Donna Leon's novel too much. It is a pleasant read, with interesting asides about Italy, its culture, and the environmental challenges it faces. But it's telling that I made a note of page 110. That is the first place where anything that could be called "action" takes place. And what happens there? Some glass blowers blow glass. So while I enjoyed this book, it may provide too phlegmatic of a plot for many readers, and it is apparently the wrong place for first-timers to begin.

Highly Recommended: The Shape of Water and the other Inspector Maltalbano books by the extraordinary Sicilian, Andrea Camilleri.

1 out of 5 stars Way under par.......2007-05-07

I previously read A Noble Radiance by the same author and enjoyed it. I grabbed this book while away on business when I finished the other book I was reading. The only good thing to say is that this novel helped me go sleep quickly.

The plot meanders and is not very interesting. Brunetti is basically investigating a threat to someone which gets his foot in the door when something finally happens. Basically, the first half of the book is about something which is only marginally related to the dead body. I struggled to finish the book and will not put it in the pile of books for my wife to read. Instead, it is going in the giveaway pile.

4 out of 5 stars Deadly glass.......2007-03-04

Inspector Vianello asks his boss, Commissario Brunetti to help him obtain the release of one of his friends who was arrested at a demonstration protesting the chemical pollution of the canals of Venice. This leads them into the investigation of the murder of a worker at a glass blowing factory in Murano, the world famous home of the glass blowing industry. The main culprit seems likely to be the owner of one of the factories, a choleric old man who is convinced that his old ways of getting rid of the residue of his business isn't harmful to anyone and who refuses to bend to any new, environmentally friendly rules. What follows is a story of greed, lust for political power and one of Donna Leon's usual great reads about the exploits of the Venetian police officer, Commissario Brunetti and the every day life of the people of Venice.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Commissario Brunetti myster.......2007-01-21

Donna Leon not only writes a good mystery tale, but she shows you a picture of Venice and of the people who live there; their attitudes and beliefs. It is refreshing to have the main character in a strong marriage with normal teenagers interacting positively. In this story, Ms. Leon lets you decide in your own mind about the mystery involved, but she deals with some very important issues that the world should be considering. She has developed and strenghtened her characters through her novels, and you anticipate what is happening. She does a have a cynical attitude toward politicians and politics, which is also true worldwide. Commissario Brunetti, in this story, tackles a difficult death in a caring manner. One of the enjoyable characters, Signorina Elettra, continues her control of gathering information, as she has also gained importance through the book series. I strongly recommend this book to those who enjoy a good mystery set among people who have to deal with death and narrow-minded people.

1 out of 5 stars The first Donna Leon book I haven't finished - and don't plan to........2007-01-20

Donna Leon must have cooking something when she wrote this book. It was like she kept checking to see if the something was done in the oven and came back and wrote a chapter to a different book. Some chapters seems totally unrelated to the book. Characters get mentioned and when I thumbed back to see who she was talking about, I couldn't find them. How can someone write such a great series of books and then totally bomb?!! It is a limp and tired story involving an environmental problem at a glass factory. Donna needs a vacation...from Venice!
PS. I never finished the book - it just isn't interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2003-01-28

After reading the book you and your husband wrote on Intercessors and Pastors I had to write and thank you for the tremendous work the Holy Spirit did through you. From the first chapter to the last, it captivated my entire being until it was read from cover to cover. You answered so many questions that had come up and even covered many questions that my mind could not yet think, but felt.

In the few pages prior to the chapter, Understanding Your Intercessor, you mentioned that a church prayed over some names in the telephone directory and had amazing results. Is it possible to talk to the person that was in charge of that project? We would like to likewise have this exercise in faith at our church. Already it is easy to see how it would totally revolutionize every ministry, seeing God's might power through effective, fervent prayer.

It thrilled my heart to hear Pastor say last Wednesday, "I want our house to be known as a house of prayer." How God is using your book to help influence our ministry. Thank you for your love for God, your deep devotion to Him and for allowing Him to make you what you are in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars More than a book on prayer.......2000-07-21

My husband and I are the "Prayer Leaders" in our church. My husband and then my pastor are in line to read your book. I have read many books in the past year (I'm a student at WLI in Colorado Springs) - Your book is at the top of the list of all of the books I've read (Jack Deere, C.P.Wagner, J.I. Packer, Bonner, Sheets, etc.) Maybe it's because God had a divine appt. with me in the pages of this book; I don't know, but I am telling everyone I know what an impact it has made on my walk with God, not only as an intercessor but as a child of God. Your chapter "Let the Healing Begin" spoke to me re: my broken relationship with my parents. God has been leading me down a path to reconciliation with them and with this chapter Holy Spirit led me at a fast pace much closer to the anticipated time. I was humbled and broken after realizing that I am the one required to pay the price of humility and maybe even humiliation. I look forward, even long to, literally washing my parent's feet. I feel that I am at the door of reconciliation now and God is going to give me the key any day to open it up and walk through. Two Sundays ago the Lord asked me: "why do you want to reconcile with them?" I answered, "Because they are my parents and I love them and want to be in fellowship with them." He asked me again, "why do you want to reconcile?" I answered, "because it is the Christian thing to do, and, because my entire family is disconnected and this will begin the reuniting" Once again, God asked and I said, "Oh, Lord, because I want to know you more." The Lord said to me, "Yes, now we can move forward and do what needs to be done." He wanted me to see that although my other answers were good and Biblical - it was my relationship with Him that had to be the number one priority for everything I do. And now I think I know what leads people like you and Chuck Pierce and many others into the battles you march into. I believe that knowing Him more is the result of each one. The victory is sweet and the souls that are saved are joy but knowing Him more is the cry of our hearts. This book is about knowing God and in knowing Him and being made complet in Him we can move into the right relationship with intercessors, pastors, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Please Read This Book!.......2000-05-03

I was stunned to learn from a trusted prayer leader that the division between pastors and intercessors is worldwide. I thought it just existed in my city. That's why I bought the book. I have had quite a lot to learn to understand why the division exists and now see it largely as an issue of control, something the authors point out that God never gave away to either pastors or to intercessors. What an obvious place for the enemy to erect a wall, for we vitally need one another. Together, the power of the church will finally be released. This book is magnificent in its accessibility to a topic that has mystified me. I found it immensely practical. The authors' tenderness and humility show through on every page.

2 out of 5 stars Hurnard's belief on God rather than a history book........2004-12-21

This book is a little misleading. This is supposed to tell of the eyewitness account of the siege of Jerusalem and the birth of Israel. This is what it says on the cover, but in fact, most of the book talks about Hurnard's belief in God. It even goes into Biblical prophesy on the second coming when Israel was reborn. At least half of the book is devoted to Hurnard's belief. This is what I hate about born again people, they feel they have all the answers and the rest of us are pagans. Hurnard writes very little about what happened to her during the siege. She recounts stories about the shells and bombings of her neighborhood, but other than that, not much else.
The reader interested in the birth of Israel should avoid this book. This is a book about faith, and is more at home in the religion section.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-11-26

Hannah Hurnard's account of the turbulent times in Israel's earliest days makes for excellent reading as well as excellent research material. Her account centers on the siege of Jerusalem. This book is also fair to both sides in the Middle East conflict.

4 out of 5 stars Watchmen on the Walls; Fight for Israel's Independence.......1999-12-30

Hannah Hurnard went to Israel in 1932 and lived through the war for and acquisition of independence for the new nation in 1948; Actual accounts of the hardships and miracles of living through the war. Her resolve was monumental. A book that leaves you thinking, "How would I have lived through it?"

    Book Description

In a remote safe house in the American Northeast, a terrorist is questioned, a psychiatrist is tested, and an assassin is dispatched. . . .

His previous novels have been widely praised as "sharp and refreshingly literate" (Chicago Tribune); and "taut and lean and filled with action" (Booklist). In The Watchmen John Altman delivers his most gripping thriller yet.

An Al Qaeda prisoner named Ali Zattout is moved from Guantánamo Bay to a CIA safe house for observation and interrogation. He is smart, cooperative, and thoroughly Westernized -but is he too good to be true? The man who must question him, Dr. Louis Finney, regrets his days spent working for the U.S. Government. Years have passed since he and his mentor performed experiments designed to develop multiple personalities in unsuspecting patients, but only recently have his guilty nightmares begun to subside. Now his mentor appears on Finney's doorstep, terminally ill, asking him to consult for a critically important CIA case.

But the CIA isn't the only group interested in Zattout's information. His capture has aroused concerns at the highest ranks of Al Qaeda. An assassin schooled in ancient arts of meditation and murder is sent to eliminate Zattout before he discloses their secrets. The CIA safe house is as heavily guarded as the secret of its location, but Zattout is not the only traitor within its walls. . . .

Read the review "A Psychological Yawner." I almost put to down midway through. Won't say why. You'll see, if you read it. His book entitled The Deception was better. Aluring style. Story line a bit thin and ponderous. At the end I asked, "So, what was the point now?" The reviewer on the jacket, Ronald Kessler, says "the closest most of us will ever get to being inside the war on terror." Geeze, I hope it's going better than this! I hope.

    5 out of 5 stars Mind games.......2006-10-30

A terrorist has been captured and is being interogated at a safe house. Dr. Finney is brought out of retirement after 20 years to aid his former friend and associate, Dr. Nobel. But there are many players in the game including an assassin who has been hired by the former associates of the terrorists to penetrate the safe house and silence the captive. To use an old expression, people who play with fire get burned, and an assassin can be as dangerous to his employers as he is to the target.

This is a psychological drama that will hold your attention. It raises questions about how far the government should go to obtain information, and how far people people will depart from their morality when pushed by necessity and directions received ("I was only following orders"). It provides an interesting background about Muslim terrorists, and various conflicts and causes.

The story alternates between the assassin, the people who hired him, CIA operatives, and the men associated with Dr. Finney in the interrogation. Numerous bystanders become casualties, and bodies are left strewn about the landscape. There are a few interesting sidelights like the motel owner wondering who will pay for the door blown off its hinges - but people are weird and will show up wanting to stay in the same room where an event occurred.

4 out of 5 stars RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES.......2005-07-08

I was in the midst of reading this Al Quaeda thriller when the bombs went off in London. Although this tale of an Al Quada assassin dispatched from the Middle East to silence a captured terrorist before he can spill the beans to the CIA takes place a couple of years ago, it is just as relevant today. Sadly, it is obviously going to be equally relevant tomorrow. The book raises interesting philosophical issues about interrogation techniques, both from moral and efficacy points of view. Actually, the nationality and political point of view of the hired assasin seem ambigous. This may be on purpose, but I haven't finished the book so I don't know if this information is ultimately revealed.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy The Ride.......2005-05-19

An assasin targets a potential Al Quada informer being held in a safe house somewhere in upstate New York. The psychological methods under consideration for extracting information from the prisoner are truly chilling. Given what we know about methods sanctioned by the U.S. government in Iraq, it wouldn't surprise me if these methods are really used. Whether they are or not, the tale is spell binding. I highly recommend this enjoyable read!

5 out of 5 stars A wake up call to living more in the Word for us all........2003-06-10

As someone with many questions and concerns about the state of affairs today, this book was very enlightening concerning issues that affect us all. Mr. Bechthold has a firm grasp and (I believe) a true understanding of God's word.
The book deals with subjects that while not completly taboo, may 'light a fire under someone's rear'. This is a good thing. He is quite implicit in stating the current crisis in the modern church. There are a number of misleading and destructive ideologies that threaten to consume those who take too much comfort in the insights and opinions of others, while neglecting to immerse themselves in the Bible (the only authority on the subject) to disecrn God's true scripture.

Mr. Bechthold points out everything from the "once saved, always saved" school of thought, to the subject of liberalism and political correctness that threatens to choke the nation. Hypocrisy in the church (from divorces to lifestyles), and the teaching of the Rapture are also delved into. He covers each subject from an objective viewpoint then tightens the noose by thouroughly quoting scripture to clinch it!
He knows his stuff and is modest as he even begs the reader to not just take his word for it, but study the Word of God themselves.
This being the case, and the fact his writing is articulate, clear and consise, he remains factual therefore quite polite. So let me, a new fan (and hoping for more books to shed light on the decay of morals and the temptation to compromise God's Word) be the first to say, . . .wonderful job!
Excellent to read, even better to study. Get it if you seek the truth, don't if you would rather be content and not be challenged.

          Book Description

Modern Bible scholars teach that the Church will be miraculously kept from Tribulation in an event called the "Rapture," yet the Bible is strangely quiet about such an event! This fascinating book finally makes the study of the last days understandable. Using clear explanations, the notion that the church will be "raptured" before the time of the "Great Tribulation" is proven a dangerous deception. The key to understanding Bible prophecy is revealed, and the fascinating reason why this key has been kept hidden for generations only to be recently made known is explained.
