This book is now worthless. ACLS guidelines were updated in Spring 2006. Make sure that any study materials you buy were printed after then.

Great Book.......2006-12-31
This is a great book. It worked great for me renewing my ACLS certification. The cards and CD-ROM inside were excellent. The cards are great to carry with you while you are working and you are allowed to take the cards with you while taking your exam and mega-code!

Excellent book.......2007-08-31
This book is a must for those who are dedicated to the art fo prehospital care. Very good editorial standard, easy to read and understand both the basics as well the advanced aspects related to trauma support. Highly recommended.
Good book for the EMT-B, Excellent Review for a Paramedic.......2007-04-30
I just finished taking the course this weekend and I love this book. I'm an EMT-B and its satisfying to finally have a book that is more in depth with regards to injury kinematics, assessments, conditions, and management. There isn't MUCH new that hasn't been covered in an EMT-B course, however, it explains why certain procedures must be done with regards to the physiology of the trauma injury.
I can understand why Paramedics see it as a refresher, but I guess its good for them to reinforce their foundation of knowledge. My belief is that it is too simplified for nurses and doctors, but I'm sure they take ATLS anyway ( as they should!).
The main focus of the book seems to teach the ability to do a rapid assessment and treatment and then "load and go" instead of "stay and play".
Excellent upgrade from the 5th edition........2007-04-10
PHTLS 6th edition, had numerous upgrades from the last edition. This book was very informative of the new procedures we are seeing in prehospital care. It was written for paramedic level of procedure, but was still written to be understood by an EMT-B. The DVD was excellent example of the hands on procedures, unlike the 5th editions CD. A must read for the emergency care personnel.
Trauma Life Support.......2007-01-09
Nice review of BLS and ALS principles and is a good resource for information on emergent trends like use of tourniquets or hemostatic dressings. As a text for learning ALS skills, though, it is lacking in detail or clear photos or diagrams. Photos of intubation are at a distance that makes it hard to see the fine detail required in the technique; images of the cords would be helpful. Similarly, IV access has no visual aids; tips on catheter insertion would be helpful if this were to be used as a teaching text.
A good course.......2006-03-03
For anyone in prehospital medicine, a good course to take. I found a lot of it to be review from my Paramedic class, though.

Former romance author and medical doctor Tess Gerritsen is writing in a new genre: medical suspense. Advertised as her "first novel," Harvest jumped onto the New York Times bestseller list and thus legions of new fans were introduced to the work of this talented author. Gerritsen's second thriller, Life Support, is as moving as any of her romances. Dr. Toby Harper works the night shift in an emergency room. More comfortable with the steady horror and tedium of emergency care than with a normal lifestyle, Toby alienates herself socially from her peers and from her sister. She spends her daytime hours alone with her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. When elderly Alzheimer's patients from the same retirement home start dying mysteriously, Toby is the only one suspicious enough to investigate. As a result she finds herself, her mother, and her own sanity at risk.
Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen weaves authenticity into another novel of searing medical suspense, as a dedicated woman doctor probes into the cause of a mystifying and lethal outbreak.
The quiet overnight shift at Springer Hospital ER suits Dr. Toby Harper just fine -- until she admits a man in critical condition from a possible viral infection of the brain. The delirious man barely responds to treatment -- and then disappears without a trace. Before Toby can find him, a second case occurs, revealing a terrifying fact: the virus can only be spread through direct tissue exchange. Following a trail of death that winds from a pregnant sixteen-year-old prostitute to her own home, Toby discovers the unthinkable: the epidemic didn't just happen -- someone let it loose....

Two thumbs down.......2007-06-29
This was, I believe, the second Tess Gerritsen book I have read. Now, you should know that I love medical thrillers. Robin Cook is one of my favorites. But Tess crosses the line: with scientists creating chimeras of various body parts, inserting them into prostitutes, wait for the chimera to grow, then kill the prostitutes (and then catch the chimera as it slithers across the floor, so you can harvest its parts). It was all just way too graphic for me.
If you find the concept of cloning reprehensible, then you will NOT enjoy this book. If you want to read about scientists doing the above things in the name of science, then maybe you would like this book. But I don't recommend it.
Not your typical, everyday science-fiction romantic horror medical thriller.......2007-06-14
First, a warning. My copy of this book originally published in 1997 includes an `introduction' by the author written in 2006. If yours does too, do not read it until after you have finished the story! In my case I was unaware how much it could spoil my enjoyment, which it did for hundreds of pages because before the tale begins Tess has kind of told you what it's about. Maybe it wasn't her idea to add this piece of information but to be blunt it's a pretty dumb idea to put it at the beginning when it would have done no harm at all at the end.
You see, this story starts off in fascinating fashion in the form of a prologue involving a surgeon about to perform a major operation on an anaesthetised female patient. What happens as he opens up her body is a mixture of horror and hilarity in equal measure, but the reasons for his bizarre actions are almost completely neutralised because thanks to the unwanted introduction, we now know exactly why he did it. What a shame, because this could have been a first-rate thriller if not for that. It's like reading the last chapter of a whodunit mystery FIRST. Where are the thrills once you know what's going on?
Otherwise this story reminded me of the superior HARVEST by the same author. Attractive female thirty-something doctor in a Boston hospital unearths ghoulish medical conspiracy and fights to deliver justice against all the odds. It's pretty good, to be fair, well worth reading before or after any of the Rizzoli/Isles episodes for which Tess Gerritsen has found fame and fortune. Quite a few names in that series, however, appear in this novel - for example there's a Jane, a cop called Moore, a love-interest called Daniel.....any of these sound familiar to you Rizzoli/Isles fans? They're totally different people but it made me wonder why the writer chose to, in effect, resurrect these names in her crime thriller series of more recent years.
Definitely worth buying whether you're a fan or not. Just make sure you give that intro a miss!
Classic Gerritsen.......2007-05-28
If you reach for a Tess Gerritsen novel, you know what you're going to get -- a psychological thriller cloaked in enough medical terminology to have you sounding like an ER doc, with some graphic blood-and-guts scenes thrown in for good measure. While Gerritsen's books are not for the faint of heart, they are well-plotted and well-written, with strong characters and plenty of action. Because they're all written from that recipe, they do tend to run together, and "Life Support" is another one that fits that bill. The storyline involves tracing a killer virus whose roots lie in "fountain of youth" hormone transplants. With all the recent talk about biochemical warfare and killer viruses, this book is sure to strike a chord with the public.
One question -- what's with the naked babe on the cover of the book? I guess Gerritsen's having a hard time letting go of her romance roots.
Good book by Tess Gerritsen, as usual.......2006-08-03
To keep this short, Life Support is a very good book but parts of it are not for the squeamish. This might make a great movie. Anyway, Life Support is definately worth the read.
A Scary, Medical Thriller.......2006-07-03
If you like medical thrillers but are tired of the virus-escaping-to-destroy-mankind scenario, this tale will be refreshing. Dr. Toby Harper, a young ER physician at a hospital outside of Boston, encounters several, elderly patients with startling, self-destructive behavior. Despite protests from Dr. Wallenberg, their powerful, private physician, she alerts the Medical Examiner. Wallenberg becomes her bitter enemy and works to destroy her career. The Medical Examiner finds that the patients had Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare malady caused by a prion, an agent simpler than a virus, that usually infects only by ingestion of prion-containing brain tissue. With the help of Dr. Robbie Brace, a physician at a retirement home where Dr. Wallenberg is in charge, she tracks the disease to the retirement home. Before she can do more, Dr. Brace is murdered, and someone begins to stalk her. The story moves rapidly to a surprising and intense climax that should keep you turning the pages.

Book Description
Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability play a crucial role in achieving a competitive product. While manufacturing costs are important for the success of a product, they are not the sole domains in realizing its competitive edge. Improved manufacturing and operating quality and performance coupled with reduced acquisition cost and in-service cost of ownership are important in achieving business success. It is the early phase of design which offers the greatest opportunity to address these requirements, and thus create life cycle effectiveness. The main objective of Reliability, Maintenance and Logistic Support - A Life Cycle Approach is to provide an integrated approach to reliability, maintainability, maintenance and logistic support analysis. We not only look at the ways we can improve the design process to ensure the product offers value for money, but we also consider how the owners can get the most from these products once they have entered service. The approach provides a meaningful way of integrating reliability, maintenance and supportability to enhance the product performance and sales opportunities. Hence, the book covers the following objectives: (1) Introduce the concepts of reliability, maintainability and supportability and their role in the system life cycle and effectiveness. (2) Introduce the basic probability and statistical techniques that are essential for modelling reliability, maintainability and supportability problems. (3) Introduce reliability measures: how to predict them; how to determine from in-service real-world data; how to use them. (4) Analysis of advanced models in Reliability. (5) Discuss basic and advanced concepts in both maintainability and maintenance including preventive, corrective and condition based maintenance. (6) Discuss maintenance management and optimization concepts, such as reliability-centered maintenance and age-related maintenance. (7) Provide basic concepts in supportability and Integrated logistic support. (8) Discuss techniques for design for reliability, maintainability and supportability. (9) Analysis of simple and advanced models in spares forecasting and optimization. (10) Discuss data analysis, data management and data mining techniques.

PALS STUDY GUIDE.......2007-05-15
It was a waste of money. I went to the AHA site and was directed to the correct book.
pedsdoc.......2006-02-25
the book has most of the information needed. would appreciate if more tables were included
It is what it is..........2005-06-07
More critical reviews of this "study guide" seem to miss the point. This is *not* an in-depth study of pediatric emergency medicine. That is not what PALS is even intended to be, in the first place. PALS (and, by extension, this book) necessarilly is narrow in focus. (The cynical joke among prehospital responders is that PALS is a 16 hour course in "airway-fluid-airway-fluid-airway-fluid", and if you need to go to the drug box you've got real trouble.) Detailed exposition of drownings/toxicology (as they relate to PALS) can be found in the Pediatric Advanced Life Support textbook which the American Heart Association publishes. That is, after all, the source from which *this* book is distilled. That is all this book is intended to be: a quick review. (Earlier editions of Ms. Aehlert's books actually had "Quick Review" in the title; why they no longer do is not clear to me.) Wider-ranging discussions about emergency care for little tikes should be sought elsewhere.
I strongly disagree with one reviewer's recommendation that this book be read by non-healthcare workers seeking to know a little more than basic CPR. Please understand: this is most decidedly *not* a guide for laypeople. From a practical standpoint, what use a layperson would have for knowledge of advanced pediatric airway control, intravenous cannulation, EKG interpretation, and cardiac drug dosage recommendations is beyond me. Better to not let such esoterica rent space in your brain if you aren't certified/equipped to deploy it when called upon. On the other hand, if you're really *that* interested that you'd read it out of mere curiousity, by all means, knock yourself out. But you'd probably *still* be better served, in that case, by checking out the actual PALS text.
However, if you *are* a healthcare worker who has taken a PALS course before, understands that the AHA PALS textbook is where you go when you want the down-and-dirty details, but would like to cut through to the must-know nitty-gritty because your certification is up for renewal and you need to pass the test again: this is the book for you.
Very lacking in information.......2003-10-28
As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, I took PALS last year and was very impressed with a different PALS book used by the hospital. I was hoping that this PALS book by Barbara Achlert would contain similar information. But this book contains very little information and does not even cover the basics like toxicology (a major cause childhood ER visits) and cold-water-near-drownings. And the information that this book does provide is extremely sketchy with many important factors missing that are a vital part of the picture. I can only recommend this book to people who are not health care workers and who want to know little more than the basic CPR, and even in that situation, it would be a very weak recommendation. My final word is don't waste your money on this "Study Guide".
excellent study aid.......1999-04-27
if you used her acls quick review study guide to get you through acls like I did, you will also benefit from this book. it's simply and clearly laid out just like acls, and is in color as well. definitely lives up to acls book.

I was recommended to read this, (borrowed it from a friend) to assist in my support-raising ... not even halfway through, i have already seen the truths of what she talks about, many of the points she makes are ones that I have had to learn already. Very much recommended for anyone starting out who needs some good advice or encouragement.
I have bought my own copy of the book and plan to take it with me on the mission field for its reminders of God's promises, support-raising tips, and uplifting stories that confirm my own experiences.

PALS Manual.......2007-09-05
Exactly as the book describes. This is the official AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Manual. It's a good book. It reads, details, and instructs as all other AHA manuals do. This revision of the books is much smaller, which I like a lot. They have left out a lot of the pictures and remedial review stuff that a provider of this level should already know. I love the quick reference cards that come enclosed with the book.
Product Description
Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07
The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.
Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10
John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.
When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.
Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.
This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26
As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.
Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.
Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18
I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.
