Book Description
This book follows all NIMS ICS (National Incident Management System--Incident Command System) processes and principles. Beyond Initial Response was written to fill a significant gap in ICS training. Critical ICS position-specific training is difficult to get, yet responders have the responsibility to effectively operate in an ICS organization. This book removes the gap, instills confidence, knowledge and assurance that is required to be successful in an ICS command. Major focus areas: 1) the ICS Planning Process discussed in extensive detail, 2) ICS positions (13 critical positions thoroughly covered in depth), and 3) Unified Command: what it takes to be successful. This book is an invaluable reference tool that contains numerous job aids, checklists, illustrations and sample documents enabling the user to seamlessly work within the Incident Command System. In addition, it is an excellent support source for ICS training, contingency planning and response operations. Beyond Initial Response should be within arms length whether you are training or deploying.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for all responders!.......2006-11-29
This is a great review of the ICS process! It's easy to read, with exceptional examples of each situation, how to conduct meetings, and how to fill out the ICS forms. I have brought it to a few excercises with me and everyone who looks at it, wants one! The authors did an INCREDIBLE job of combining their particular areas of expertise into a very educational product!
Highly recommended - clear, concise and well crafted........2006-08-15
An exceptional reference and text. Clearly, the authors have many years experience in emergency response and have applied their expertise to the core incident management concepts. If you are looking for a way to understand the National Incident Management System from concept to `nuts and bolts, down in the field' processes, this is the best you will find.

Book Description
An inspiring collection of the personal philosophies of a group of remarkable men and women
Based on the National Public Radio series of the same name, This I Believe features eighty essayists—from the famous to the unknown—completing the thought that begins the book’s title. Each piece compels readers to rethink not only how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs but also the extent to which they share them with others.
Featuring a well-known list of contributors—including Isabel Allende, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, William F. Buckley Jr., Penn Jillette, Bill Gates, and John Updike—the collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer; a part-time hospital clerk from Rehoboth, Massachusetts; a woman who sells Yellow Pages advertising in Fort Worth, Texas; and a man who serves on the state of Rhode Island’s parole board.
The result is a stirring and provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of people whose beliefs—and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them—reveal the American spirit at its best.

Superb.......2007-09-07
I bought this book after accompanying a friend to a book signing by Gediman in Cleveland last night. I had no idea what the NPR show, on which the book is based, was about but I'm very glad that I went - one of those fortuitous moments causing a small but perceptible expansion of ones world.
The premise of the show/book is people from all walks of life and nations are requested to submit a 350-500 word essay about "This I Believe". No preaching or dogmatic style is allowed, with the focus of the essays being on the greater essence of what it means to be human, alive and existing in this wonderful universe. The show initially aired in the early 1950's as the brainchild of Ward Wheelock (initiated the idea after his wife died and provided the funding), William Paley and Donald Thornburgh (CBS radio execs) and Edward Murrow (radio broadcaster).
Invitations were sent out to the famous of the time to submit their essays. Contributors included Hoover, Einstein, Truman, Barb Stanwyck, Thomas Mann, Jackie Robinson etc. Following the request of one listener contributions were sought from folks from all walks of life as opposed to the merely famous. The show aired daily for 4yrs gaining huge success around the globe. Alas for one reason and another the show came to an end in 1955.
The concept of "This I Believe" essays lay dormant until March 2003 when Gediman found a copy of essays from the 1950's series and realised that much of what they contained then was as pertinent today - a nation at war, health, government, science, philosophy etc. And so the whole concept, via NPR, was resurrected and has become a firm favourite of the NPR audience.
Anyone is requested to submit their essay, submission guidelines are provided in the book. Authors of the best ones received are requested to record them and then they're aired on the show. 80 essays are collected in this book combining some from the original 1950's shows along with ones from the current. (All of the stories submitted so far, some 19000, are available online). A variety of topics are touched upon in peoples personal philosophies from being nice to the pizza delivery guy through to international collaboration being the only way for humanity withstand its global pressures through to the inspiration to be found while looking up at the stars. Contributors include Bill Gates, Warren Christopher, Colin Powell, John McCain, John Updike, Leonard Bernstein, Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) through to hospital clerks, schoolteachers, fashion designers and an autistic.
You might not agree with all the beliefs presented in the book (and why should you?) but there certainly is much there to ponder. One of the bonuses is for me is the lack of ram-it-down-your throat, my-way-or-the-highway bombast that plagues so much contemporary religion - religion/god is touched upon but in the loftier sense of man's search for meaning as opposed to the fire and brimstone of the pulpit.
Each essay is well written and even though succinct, manage to get across the pertinent points of the authors beliefs. The book certainly lends itself to random browsing (the essays are ordered by authors surname), and with no topic or index you have no idea what you are going to get in to with each.
Highly recommended - and who knows, it might compel you to submit your own essay.

Nuggets of Treasure.......2007-05-16
If you're looking for a book you can read in one sitting, this is not the one. "This I Believe - The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women" is a powerful collection of essays based on the National Public Radio series of the same name. The book is edited by Jay Allison, host and curator, and Dan Gediman, executive producer, of This I Believe. These editors are donating their proceeds to This I Believe, Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the mission of This I Believe.
Eighty essayists contributed to this book, each one penning concise expressions of their thought processes following the book's title. From the world-renowned Bill Gates, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Helen Keller, John McCain, and Carl Sandburg, to the hometown lawyer, professor, part-time clerk, and tone-deaf music lover, each one spoke of their deepest beliefs in life. From reflections on kindness, generosity, and compassion, to staunch convictions about democracy, freedom, and war, these essays touch chords every reader will hear in their hearts and minds.
Novelist Isabel Allende, niece of Chilean president Salvador Allende, writes, "Give, give, give--what is the point of having experience, knowledge, or talent if I don't give it away? Of having stories if I don't tell them to others? Of having wealth if I don't share it? I don't intend to be cremated with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others, with the world, and with the divine."
Grammy award winner, singer-songwriter, and actor Loudon Wainwright III says, "I believe in the power of inspiration, in the mysterious gift of creation. Creation with a small "c," that is, creation as in one's work, hauling a day's catch. When I write a song, I'm happy for a few days and it's not just because I've been reassured that I still have a job, though that's certainly part of it. Mostly I'm happy, I think, because I've experienced a real mystery. I haven't the slightest idea how it happened or where or from whom or what it came. I'd prefer not to know. In fact, I'd prefer not to talk about it anymore. It might scare the fish away."

The best gift book you can give, this I believe.......2007-05-12
There is something for eveyone. In a world of mad rushing and limited time, this book provides the profound and provocative in quick small doses--simply perfect!
Unbelievably inspirational in an everyday kind of way.......2007-05-06
This is my new favorite book! What i love (and hate) about it is that it's really best to only read a few pages per day. It's so difficult not to just keep on reading one story after another, but then i don't get the full benefit of being able to soak in all the wisdom. And it's great for reading out loud to friends.

Just when you thought it was safe for a bloodsucker to go out in the dark in New Orleans, along comes Merrick Mayfair, a sultry, hard-drinking octoroon beauty whose voodoo can turn the toughest vampire into a marionette dancing to her merry, scary tune. In Merrick, Anne Rice brings back three of her most wildly popular characters--the vampires Lestat and Louis and the dead vampire child Claudia--and introduces them to the world of her Mayfair Witches book series.
It is Louis who brings about the collision of the fang and voodoo universes. Louis made Claudia a vampire in Rice's classic Interview with the Vampire, in which she was destroyed, and now he's obsessed with raising her ghost to make amends and seek guidance from the beyond. (Claudia physically resembles Rice's young daughter who died of a blood-related illness. Rice nearly died of a diabetic coma in 1998, and writing Merrick turned her excruciating recovery into an exhilarating burst of creativity).
Vampire David Talbot lobbies Merrick to call Claudia's spirit and slake Louis's guilt, but Talbot winds up in the grip of an obsession with the witch. You see, Talbot, unlike most vampires, lived 70 years as a human, so his sexual response to humans is still as strong as his blood thirst. Merrick can cast spells to make men crave her, and Talbot is tormented. After she reads his palm, he muses, "I wanted to take her in my arms, not to feed from her, no, not harm her, only kiss her, only sink my fangs a very little, only taste her blood and her secrets, but this was dreadful and I wouldn't let it go on."
The secrets of Merrick are dark and sensuous, but the book is a romp animated by Rice's feeling of coming back to life through the magic of a literary outpouring. The narrative flashes back to the past, to an Indiana Jones-ish adventure in a Guatemalan cave, and to scenes from many other Rice novels. It may be helpful to read Merrick with the Rice-approved guidebooks The Vampire Companion and The Witches' Companion at hand.
After many books, Rice's grand Vampire Chronicles tale was in peril of getting long in the tooth. Merrick Mayfair's magic represents an infusion of fresh blood. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
In this mesmerizing new novel, Anne Rice demonstrates once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling and the creation of myth and magic, as she weaves together two of her most compelling worlds? those of the Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair witches.
Download Description
At the center of Anne Rice's new novel is the beautiful, unconquerable Merrick, a child--a witch with the power and magical knowledge of a Medea and a Circe. She is a Mayfair of New Orleans, descendent of a family rich in its French and Spanish past, steeped in the age-old tradition of voodoo. Into this strange and exotic world comes David Talbot, hero, storyteller, adventurer, almost-mortal vampire, a visitor from another realm of the dark world.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
There is not a lot to see here. This is a crossover with the witch bunch of books, and the Talamasca also features. David Talbot and friend Merrick recount some adventures in the past with supernatural entities, and yet another vamp, this time Louis, tries the sun bathing but gets rescued.
David Talbot tells the Talamasca, after Merrick has succeeding in becoming a vampire that declaring war on the vampires because of this would end very badly for them.
Never read it.......2007-06-24
I brought as a gift for my sister. I personally never read it but I am giving it 5 stars because I read and saw Interview with the Vampire. Anything Anne Rice outs out is excellent!
Don't buy this book!.......2007-03-23
I hated this book. I am a fan of Rice's Mayfair Witches series and enjoyed the early works in the Vampire Chronicles, but Rice's later works are long drawn-out snores. The only one of Rice's books that was more likely to induce catatonia was The Violin. I also didn't see the point of having Merrick related to the Mayfairs since the only thing they have in common is being witches. Using dreams of Oncle Julien as a plot device was a cheat and the story would have been better if the Mayfairs had been left out of it altogether. As for Louis and his melodrama, by the middle of the book, I was more than willing to help him commit suicide if for no other reason than I was tired of his incessent whining.
As for my recommendation: if you enjoy tedious whining from someone who chose to live forever, are a masochist, or are an insomniac needing a sleep remedy, then this is the book for you. I, on the other hand, would rather slit my own wrist than read another book by Rice.
3.5 stars.......2007-02-20
I liked this book better than Interview with a Vampire. Not as graphic and better written. I rated it 3.5 to 3.75 stars. It's about Merrick searching out to contact the spirit of Claudia, the child. I liked the story Much Much better than Interview with a Vampire.
Merrick..........2007-02-17
Although my knowlege of Anne Rice's characters are limited to Armand, Lestat (to a degree) and Marius, I found Merrick an entertaining read. You know the drill - once I started the book, I stayed up late a few nights to finish it. Well done, Ms. Rice - a good book (IMHO) is still one of life's pleasures. Get a copy and find out for yourself!
Five stars!

A very useful book to invest in.......2001-03-23
I bought this book in speculation. I have in the past bought many curtain books and found them not particularly helpful. After reading this book, I went straight onto their website and ordered other books that they have written.
This is probably going to be the best book on Curtains that you will ever buy and thoroughly recommend it.
A very Beautiful Curtain Book.......2000-09-19
The Pictures and Designs are the very latest, some of them do not even require sewing. My husband, whom is a Curtain Track Installer for more than 10 years; whom had installed curtain in more than 1000 homes also feel that the Designs that Catherine drew in this book are not only simple but nice. We are all very impressed by the up-to-date, mostly Simple designs which are very appealing to customers of the young generation. We will recommend our Customers to take these Unique Patterns. We intend to order one more book and cut them as Samples for us to bring round to show our Potential Customers. Thank you Catherine Merrick. Fm: Felis, e-mail: thechua@pacific.net.sg

Customer Reviews:
Company decided against using EJB 3.0.......2007-06-01
Anything that requires getting a bunch of jars on the server classpath was deemed unsuitable for automated deployments. I wonder how people manage automated deployments and configurations, especially in a multi-server clustered environment.
Well written.......2007-05-25
This book is very well written. Everything is explained in a simple manner. It gives you a good understanding of JPA.
Strong EB / JPA Book.......2007-05-23
I bought this book to learn the intricacies of EJB3 and for the most part it did a good job. There are good and bad points to it.
The good - Since Entity Beans and the concept of using them with EJB queries and the Entity Manager are the biggest change to hit EJB3 this book focuses mainly on that. It goes into good depth on the various annotations to use and how they are used. In addition he has a chapter devoted to writing queries. Which while sounding trivial for those not use to hibernate or EJB3 can be a major pain since they are different from writing regular SQL queries.
The bad - this book for the most part is very light on the MDB and Session beans. Of course there isnt too much to say about them. I just expected for a Pro book a more in depth analysis. However, for most people that would have been boring anyway. Also, I didn't think some of the advanced examples were hard enough.
course this being all said i'd still give it 5 stars. It focuses on the major items of EJB3 you need to know, and you can come away with some solid cases.
Informative, but light........2007-03-04
I got the feeling that the authors were stretching the content a bit to bring it up to book length, and I would have preferred denser material with the same information. Still, a good (and easy) read. I'd learned java in the pre 5 days, and so annotations were totally new to me.
Frustrating.......2007-02-24
A good tech book has no fluff or filler, makes it easy to see and reference the major points and principles, and has solid unambiguous examples. This book disappoints on all three counts. This book has a lot of padding: it spends a lot of time repeating what it already said or prefacing what it will say next, or using an entire paragraph to say what a single clear sentence would. The principles and major points are then buried in that muck instead of being clearly stated and highlighted. On the bright side, chapter 7 (Query Language) had plenty of nice examples.

Beauty of the owls.......2001-12-07
If you have even the slightest interest in owls or birds in general this is the book for you. The pictures range from full shots of the individual species to minute details in plumage and even comparative pictures of feet and wing shape. This is truly the most well put together collection of owl photographs I've ever encountered. It even has a section in the back for artists who wish to use owls in carvings and paintings. All in all, this is a fantastic book.
Owls by Floyd Scholz.......2001-10-31
I thought I had seen the best of the best when I first saw Scholz's "Birds of Prey". I was wrong! "Owls" stands alone, without peers. "Owls" is a rare combination of text, photography and advice. The pictures are amazing. The text is readable and informative. The advice and patterns alone are worth far more than the price of the book. The unbelievable amount of research that went into this book is evident from the dust cover clear through to the last page. The book is a must for everyone who enjoys owls be it artist, carver, naturalist, bird lover or simply people who enjoy fantastic books. Considering the size and quality of "Owls", it is a bargin!
Stunning!!!.......2001-10-27
Having used Floyd's previous reference 'Birds of Prey' since 1995, I've been eagerly anticipating the arrival of 'Owls'. The quality of the photography and variety of poses, including many extreme close-ups, makes this a first rate reference book for any artist as well as a stunning book for display on your coffee table. The saying that "A picture is worth a thousand words" has never been truer. Anyone who loves these beautiful creatures will be overwhelmed by the elegance of this book. I'll be purchasing a second copy for display, as the one in my studio will be occupied for a while.
Not Just for Carvers.......2001-10-16
Floyd's 'Birds of Prey' was absolutely the best reference book for wildfowl artists ... until he wrote 'Owls'.
There are more birds featured, and there are more photos of each bird. If you liked the photos in Floyd's first book, you'll love these photos even more. He also provides more detailed patterns for each bird.
I'm ecstatic to be adding this volume to my bookshelf, and it's going to make a great gift for several of my family and friends.
And, if you are a carver, Floyd's Vermont Raptor Academy (referenced in the book) is an experience you don't want to miss.

Customer Reviews:
If you have any interest in raptors, do yourself a favor..........2007-06-02
..and buy this book right now. A freind of mine showed me Floyd Scholz owl book and i was amazed. I found that he wrote another book , Birds of Prey, and ordered it. Just got it in today and it's fantastic. This book contains gorgeous photos of several species of raptors, but not just in outdoor shots or hard to reference flying poses. These are studio photos, close ups of spread and folded wings, details of the feet and head and a number of full body shots. There are also scientific line drawings of the birds, detailing the feather arrangement and body proportions. The back of the book has one the coolest sections ever...how to carve raptor statues! This mans carving skill is amazing to the point where it's almost ridiculous. His bird sculptures look 100% real and the clear step by step instructions make it look easy.
This book is perfect for artist's reference. It does have some text, such as the species profile at the start of each chapter which is awesome. However this book mostly photos, scientific drawings and artwork...which is also awesome.
Seriously, buy it.
Must have........2003-04-09
This book is an absolute must-have for anyone who wants to draw these birds... or simply appreciates their beauty. These aren't simply glamor-shots, they're close-up detailed images, from a number of different angles. Every one is well lit, in crisp focus, and shows wonderful detail.
Excellent Reference.......2001-07-16
This wonderfully photographed book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in carving birds of prey. An extremely thorough series of photographs is included for each bird covered in the book. Additionally, patterns and other carving consideration are included for each specimen. The book concludes with a chapter on creating acrylic eyes for carvings, a chapter on carving and painting a kestrel, and a chapter exhibiting some of the authors carvings. Incidentally, the author's carvings are great.
Scholtz's other book, Carving a Red Tailed Hawk, does not do this book justice. This book contains better photographs and better carving.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in carving birds of any type.
Gorgeous photos, facinating ifo.......1999-10-15
This is a gorgeous book packed with large color photos of many beautiful live birds. Its intended purpose is as a sourcebook for artists, but it will universally appeal to any bird lover.
The introductory chapter illustrates common features of raptor anatomy. Detailed chapters follow on 17 major North American species with numerous color photos and line drawings with dimensions.
A practical application is included with a step-by-step section on carving and painting a finely detailed kestrel in wood. There are even instructions for making remarkable lifelike eyes from acrylic plastic.
The book concludes with a gallery of the author's own fabulous museum quality carvings. This is a great combination of nature photography and fine art.
Terrific resource!.......1999-04-20
Not only bird artists, but any bird lover would enjoy this book. The pictures are excellent, in focus and from all angles.
This book is often in use at my lab table.

Inventors! If you buy only one book on inventing - this is it!.......2007-08-13
Over the years I've read most every book on inventing that i could find. Some had useful info but none actually changed the way I think about inventing like Bob Merrick's Stand Alone, Inventor! After many years of idea after idea that I just couldn't get off the ground I stumbled on this great book. After reading it I immediately looked at my inventors book and none of my inventions seemed to have the traits that Bob talks about. And then I started actually creating ideas in a different way! After just a couple of months I now have a very viable invention that I should be able to bring to market soon! Do yourself a favor and read this one! It's the one you'll refer back to over and over and dog ear some pages in the process. Bob's experience is timeless and invaluable to any solo inventor. He makes a very good argument about why you want to Stand Alone!
A MUST READ for anyone interested in inventing, marketing and selling their own products!.......2006-08-21
This practical and insightful book from experienced veteran Robert Merrick, delivers exactly what it promises and more! A brisk, enjoyable read full of valuable lessons, resources, ideas, entertaining anecdotes, and real-world wisdom that will help save you from making costly mistakes and greatly improve your probability of success. I have a handful of other books on inventing, but I would easily trade them all for this one! I only wish I had found this book earlier. A MUST READ for anyone interested in inventing, marketing and selling their own products! With this book, you CAN be a stand alone inventor, without feeling quite so "alone" on the journey. Thank you, Mr. Merrick!
Success! I'm a Stand Alone Inventor now too!!.......2006-03-24
If you are interested in being an inventor and entrepreneur, then this is one book you MUST have on your desk. I recommend this book to everyone I know who wants to be a Stand Alone Inventor!
I quit my day job a year ago to develop my own new products. I wish I would have read this book BEFORE I made my scary and crazy decision. But luckily I stumbled across this book and WOW - what a life saver.
Bob Merrick takes you step by step through the process of getting a product from idea to manufacturing and then to the store. This book really helped me think differently about products and designing them. Ultimately I believe it saved me from tons of trials and tribulations.
I now have a patent pending product, manufacturing, and some sales!! I call that a success!
THANK YOU Bob for writing this book!!
This Inventor Stood Alone!.......2005-12-14
I purchased "The Stand Alone Inventor" several months ago, it was invaluable as a reference. I purchased it as a novice inventor... I am now in the process of shopping my "patent pending" invention to several interested manufacturers.
I have started on my next invention which I am confident will be a winner - thanks to this book. I have read several "Do It Yourself" type books for inventors... this is definitely one of the best by far.
Highly recommended!
The next right thing.......2005-10-18
Bob's book has been priceless to me even though I have been going the 'licensing route' in ideal (so I can keep my day job). In the periods when all the licensing leads seem to be dead I find the next right thing to do in his book (while I am standing alone). The momentum from these next right things has begun to turn into sales. I am not sure if I still want to license. Bob has given me options.
