5 out of 5 stars Excellent Results .......2007-08-06

I've been recently diagnosed with hypertension. My doctor told me to slow down so I took a vacation in the Carribean for a couple of weeks. Brought this fabulous book with me and read it from cover to cover. I am following Dr. Bennett's 12-week program and so far pleased with the results. This book is highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars sent it to my mother.......2007-04-01

Heard about it from a co-worker, sent it to my mother in the Philippines (where everybody has high blood pressure)and also prayed for her. Last week she called and said her pressure was down and her doctor had stopped some of her pills. She has told my aunt about it too. I am a nurse and I see a lot of people with strokes and heart problems. If this book can help my family I am all for it. Looks good so far. Will get back to you in a few months.

Great Book! I would advise all living with or without high blood pressure to read this book. A 12 week program with exercise, stress management techniques and healthy recipes!

Love it and live by it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-08-11

This inspiring book has changed many lives, and has helped many others that are suffering from chronic conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, etc. and I'm pretty sure it will help us understand that prevention, healthy eating, stress management and daily exercise, is as important as breathing, because through the 12 week program and it's many techniques we will be empowered to change and enable our body to heal it self without the need of those costly medications.

5 out of 5 stars this book can be an inspiration to all of us.......2006-08-08

'The book is upbeat, reading like the medical equivalent of a sermon from the Crystal Cathedral. The style is entertaining, friendly and motivating; so it's easy to read and reread. To follow The Program is to change one's lifestyle, not just one's diet. It is indeed, 'specific and comprehensive'. Not every reader will be able to adopt the upbeat life view which underlies it, but every reader will become more conscious of destructive things in his life which he should try to eliminate, and most of all learn a number of techniques for managing stress.
There is a good deal of well presented medical information in the book. Any patient with hypertension would profit by reading it. Some will be converted and 'go for it 100%'.'

3 out of 5 stars interesting book; not so practical or effective.......2007-08-23

I am an MD. This book is very anecdotal. Emphasizes some supplements that only have a bit of evidence backing them, and leaves out others with at least as much evidence.

Also, essentially promising that everyone will get at least some effect out of these ideas is wrong.

Personally, Ive now tried all of these supplements and the other recommendations. Got expensive quickly and MAYBE have had a few points reduction each in systolic and diastolic pressures when on the arginine, grapeseed extract, and the calcium/magnesium supplements. The others did nothing. Not able to reduce medications. Not sure if I will continue or not.

A disappointment compared to his cholesterol book.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Alternatives to Drugs for BP.......2007-07-24

Robert Kowalski, author of "The Blood Pressure Cure," said that in order to lower your blood pressure without drugs, you should first know your blood pressure.

"What I really recommend is a home blood pressure monitor. It's no more expensive than bathroom scales," he said.

Kowalski said he has five secret weapons.

The first is a tomato extract called lycomato, a product made by several different brands.

Kowalski said that in two separate studies, "(Patients) took one pill (of lycomato) a day and it brought their blood pressure down eight to 11 points."

Kowalski said the next step is to have a nightly cup of cocoa -- not the mixes, but real cocoa filled with polyphenols -- and the darker the cocoa the better. He said to make it with skim milk and a little sweetener.

"What it does is relax the lining of the arteries called the endothelium, making it more flexible and pliable so that the blood can more easily flow through," he said.

The third step in the process is to take arginine, an amino acid. Kowalski said it's a precursor to nitric oxide.

"The nitric oxide again causes the lining of the artery to expand and relax," he said.

Kowalski said that because arginine is metabolized rapidly, he recommends a sustained release formula.

But a warning comes with arginine. In Kowalski's book, he warned about a Johns Hopkins study of arginine and heart attack patients.

"There were six deaths in the arginine group and no deaths in the placebo group. So, my recommendation would be not to use this until more studies show that it is safe," said Dr. Charles Cummings, a Baltimore cardiologist from Mid-Atlantic Cardiovascular.

The fourth step on Kowalsi's list includes taking MegaNatural BP grape seed extract. The extract is sold under a number of brand names. Kowalski's book cited studies that showed an eight- to 11-point drop in blood pressure.

No. 5 on Kowalski's list was pycnogenol, an antioxidant made from pine trees. He said it's another nitric oxide producer.

"Here's my little trick. (It's kind of like a) salt substitute. Instead of being sodium chloride, it's potassium chloride," he said.

Kowalski said people need more potassium to balance the sodium. He said if people don't like the taste of pycnogenol sprinkled on food, try cooking with it.

"You won't taste it, and at every meal it becomes high in potassium to blunt the sodium," he said.

Cummings said Kowalski made some very good points in his book.

"It is true that by adopting some of the changes he suggests, we can reduce our medications significantly. But the idea that someone who's been on blood pressure pills for a long time can get off them is completely is unrealistic," he said.

Kowalski said people with high blood pressure should at least know about the medications they are taking, but don't frown about them. He said that sends a message to the brain.

"The body perceives it as something is wrong. Cortisol and norepenephrine are released, causing the blood pressure and heart rate to go up," Kowalski said.

Kowalski had another tip for those with high blood pressure.

"Find a way every day just to be nice to yourself. It helps you reduce your blood pressure, and it's better than taking a pill," he said.

Kowalski also recommended deep breathing for two to three minutes, three or four times a day. He said it's another way to help bring your blood pressure down.

Good book to read Before you take the doc's drugs!

5 out of 5 stars If you want to lower your blood pressure.......2007-06-06

Bob Kowalski's book "The Blood Pressure Cure" is for anyone that wants to take control of their elevated blood pressure and reduce it without resorting to prescription medication. He describes various ways to impact and lower blood pressure. A straight forward easily read book that gives practical advice and even includes recipes for tasty dishes to help lower blood pressure. I've read through the book twice and implemented some of his recommendations (my favorite is adding cocoa to my smoothies) with the result that I have lowered my systolic reading by 10 points! Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Not even worth a star.......2007-01-10

I would not recommend this book to my enemy! It's very wordy and it takes alot of reading to get any useful information from it. I don't have time for useless information.

5 out of 5 stars This book may have saved my life!.......2006-03-07

IN 1983 my cholesterol was about 280 and I tried and tried but could find no way to reduce it. Diet, eating carbon, etc., had no impact. I could imagine the arteries filling up with plaque, day by day.

Then I read Kowalski's book and also learned that the enduracin niacin was sold about 10 miles from where I lived.

I've been on it ever since and my cholesterol levels have been excellent. (High levels of high-density and low levels of low-density.) The skin flushing was trivial and of short duration -- about 10 minutes. I no longer have it, even though I am on immediate release, 2 grams a day. I take one gram in the morning and one gram in the evening -- when I brush my teeth.

About a year ago I had to start the immediate release form of Enduracin(because of slight liver function abnormalities).

But Kowalski and Enduracin both may well have saved my life, and at a low financial cost.

I intend to continue controlling my cholesterol with it for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars OK--want to see numbers?.......2004-12-03

I got this book after my doctor had threatened toput me on statins because my cholesterol had been 250+ for over a year. I saw the book and figured since it had been out for a while I could verify the claims on the Internet. It checked out so I followed the recommendations. Want numbers? On 2/20/01 I had my cholesterol checked. Total Cholesterol 256, LDL (bad) 185, HDL (good) 38, triglycerides 167. FIVE WEEKS LATER I went back on 3/31/01 because I had the flu and wanted to make sure I wasn't getting pneumonia or something and asked them to run the test again. Total Cholesterol 149, LDL (bad) 87, HDL (good) 52, triglycerides 52. Since then I HAVE been working with my doctor and I HAVE been getting the liver function tests recommended. Later I lowered the amount of niacin some and continued following the recommendations. From 5/24/03: Total Cholesterol 167, LDL (bad) 104, HDL (good) 47, triglycerides 79. I've let several friends read the book and all but one have seen big changes. I understand there is a newer book out there, but this one solved the problem for me.

5 out of 5 stars It works.......2003-10-12

A dozen years or so ago, my cholesterol was skyrocketing, well above an already too-high typical level for me. I read this book, followed it with care except that I took (with doctor's ok) only 500 mg. of niacin daily, NOT the much larger and much riskier doses advocated by Kowalski. In less than two months my total cholesterol dropped by 112 points, to the edge of the normal range, and it kept on dropping after that, even after I relaxed my very strict eating habits. Triglycerides also dropped sharply. But I was doing EVERYTHING right -- strict adherence to low-fat (*VERY* low saturated fat), cholesterol-free eating habits, high in fiber, including oat bran, plus significant daily exercise (escalated to 90 minutes a day on stair-climber/rower -- which is a LOT of aerobic exercise, and way more than I have the patience for now). All of it. When I slacked off the regimen some time later, the cholesterol did rise, but not as high as formerly. Kowalski is very big on oat bran, and that turns out to be the easy part because it is a pleasant hot cereal. A half cup of oat bran, some raisins or chopped dates, one cup of water, stir, heat in microwave oven on high (use a large enough bowl to avoid boiling over) for 2 minutes and 45 seconds. Stir, add some skim milk if you like. Very tasty. At worst it is a nice hot breakfast, and at best may actually contribute significantly to lower cholesterol. (You can also bake oat bran into muffins. A bit dry, but not bad. Kowalski offers a recipe.) You can search the Web for my little paper on "Fitness in One Lesson," which comments further on helpful ideas in this vein. In any event, my doctor at that time told me that "there is no such thing as an eight week cholesterol cure" when I told him I was reading and following the book. After I had dropped my cholesterol level by more than a third in 7 weeks, I found a new doctor. (There were other issues with him anyway.) But his point really was valid: this is not a one-time fix. You have to make permanent improvements in eating and exercise habits. That is why "diets" are a bad idea. Like vacations, "diets" are temporary. Proper eating and exercise should be forever. Kowalski provides a clearly written, inspirational, informative guide to valuable steps to take. Discuss it with your doctor.

Book Description

From the author of the acclaimed international best-seller Silk, here is an unforgettable tale of the cruelty of war, a little girl’s shattered world, and her lifelong quest for revenge and healing.

When—in an unnamed place and time—Manuel Roca’s enemies hunt him down, they fail to discover Nina, his youngest child, hidden in a hole beneath his farmhouse floor. And so, doing just as her father instructed, she neither speaks nor stirs as he is viciously slain above her hiding place. Only after this carnage will one of the murderers discover Nina’s trapdoor. But Tito, a mere boy himself, is so enthralled by the sight of Nina’s perfect innocence that he says nothing to his accomplices.

By the time she has grown up, Nina’s innocence will have bloomed into something else altogether, and one by one the wartime hunters will become the peacetime hunted. But not until a striking old woman calls upon an old man selling newspapers in town—the old man Tito has become—can we know what Nina will ultimately make of her brutal legacy. With the indelible truth of a fable, Without Blood reminds us that all wars are the same—the same mistake infinitely repeated in the hearts and deeds of wronged men and women—and that no life can remain untouched by loss or by hope.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a story of most powerful human feelings.......2006-12-29

This time Alessandro Baricco decided to tackle a situation of real trauma, getting for a while out of his world of towns full of extraordinary characters and strange events.
"Without Blood" is another compact work, consisting of two parts, separated by time.

In the first part, a group of men tracks down and kills someone, who during the recent war was on the other side of the barricade. Unfortunately, he has two small children and they get involved - a boy gets killed, but a girl is spared and survives.

In the second part, the girl, now an old woman, has her turn to track down all the murderers of her father and brother and kill them. After years of hiding, careful planning and concealing her emotions, she does what she feels must be done. On the beautiful summer day she arrives at the lottery kiosk and meets the last of the group - the man, who secretly spared her life...

Although both parts of the book are in sharp contrast (bloody events at the remote farm versus a sunny day in the town full of people), they are both about revenge, about justice and about personal pain. Written in the characteristic Baricco style, clear and poetic, this is another of his brilliant mini-novels. It might not be equal to "Silk", but it is still a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing but powerful.......2005-05-23

This novel is disappointing beside Baricco's Silk and Ocean Sea but is still well worth a read. The clarity and "rightness" of his prose continues to create very enjoyable reading.

The first half of the book sets the stage - a political murder of father and brother experienced by a young girl hiding under the floor. The second half is the meeting of the now grown woman with the one surviving murderer. What sets Baricco's handling of the plot apart from many authors is the surprising depth in his understanding of the psychological effect on his particular character. Her behavior is unexpected yet perfectly congruent with her personality. This raises the book from polemic into a fascinating study of human nature. It is well worth the short time it takes to read.

4 out of 5 stars Good little fable.......2004-11-07

This is a powerful fable of the personal toll war takes on individual lives. Baricco deftly explores how both sides of a conflict feel that what they are doing is right and for an ultimate higher good. The slight volume also examines how the personal aspect of war does not disappear once the war ends. In this tale, it lingers on in dangerous rage and ultimately futile schemes of revenge that beget more violence.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging story.......2004-07-18

Although I did not enjoy Baricco's lastest work as much as his best-seller "Silk", I found that the three qualities that impressed me the most with "Silk" - form, purity of style and language, and imagery - were employed with equal skill in "Without Blood."
Told in two chapters, each approximately 45 pages in length, "Without Blood" begins as the story of a young girl who witnesses the assassination of her father and young brother. The assassins, a man named Salinas, his henchman, known only as "El Gurre", and a young man of twenty named Tito, kill her father and brother, and then realizing that she mus tbe hidden somewhere in the house, burn it to the ground.
In the second half of the novel, an old woman seeks out a final revenge.
Like his work "Silk", "Without Blood" has a simple story. It is not the plot, but the immensely deep and tragic characters that make the novella great. The only problem that I had with the novella is during hte dialogue, Baricco inserts pauses that made it very hard to determine who was speaking, and it is only for this reason that I did not give it five stars.

Book Description

From American Book Award winner Eric Drooker, this is a story for the ages, beginning with the agrarian past, through the industrial present, and into the technological future.
A young woman bravely escapes a military assault on her island village, journeying across the ocean to arrive, unknowingly, in the Big City. There she meets and falls in love with a saxophone player, who makes heartfelt music. The police find and silence him, confiscating his saxophone and warning him not to make music again as it's strictly forbidden in the Big City. When the street musician continues to make music with his voice the police soon find and imprison him, making the future uncertain for the talented performer and the brave woman who loves him.
Blood Song transcends the boundaries of conventional novels--a wordless tale written in the ancient language of pictures.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, clear, simple.......2006-07-23

I find "Blood song" amazing. I mean, amazing **********. A big story contained in a small book. A girl in a South Asian forest goes to fetch some water, and in the meantime her world is destroyed. She gets into a boat with her dog and starts rowing. Is the book a story of an immigrant from Vietnam? There are no explanations attached to the pictures. The story feels large, universal. It's the journey of a small individual in the world governed by powers: armies, fire, the ocean, racial domination. I thought crosses my mind; this could be a great animation movie, something in the style of 'Princess Mononoke', but, no, this book is a great artform as it is, a story compressed in five minutes flipping through a silent, breathtaking book. Amazing, clear, simple graphics, and not even a single word. I'm stunned.

I've looked up the reviews on Amazon and some of them accuse the book of preaching. Hmm, even preaching can be made into art, can't it?

3 out of 5 stars Eric Drooker's Blood Song.......2006-02-20

This is a narrative related entirely in pictures, in the mode of such previous artist-storytellers as Lynd Ward. The novel begins in a nameless Asian country (Vietnam during the war?) and follows the central character (a young Asian woman, also nameless, of course) through the jungles and across the ocean to a large Western city (maybe New York), where further adventures ensue. This is probably enough of the plot to give you the idea, without giving anything away. A certain amount of surrealism is present, though perhaps less than in Flood!, a previous work by Drooker.
Drooker combines a unique, expressive drawing style with what I would regard as simplistic political posturing. (Leftist politics also seems to be part of the novel-without-words mindset; once again Lynd Ward could be cited.) Unlike the black-and-white scratchboard art of Flood! (a book I liked a bit more), Drooker uses color this time, albeit in a limied, almost monochromatic way -- the story is presented mostly in blue and black, with occasional stand-out flashes of more vivid color (red, yellow, orange) to accentuate a scene or a point.
All in all, I liked Blood Song fairly well, for the narrative skill (presenting a coherent story without ever using a written word is tricky) and the artwork. As for the politics, I'm willing to listen to any point of view, but I don't like propaganda presented as art. I believe that Drooker's work transcends propaganda, however, and truly tells a story.

5 out of 5 stars Wordless Poetry.......2004-12-16

This is an outstanding example of a lost art form - storytelling without words. I won't go so far as to make comparisons with Egypt and Mesoamerica, as Joe Sacco does in this book's over-analytical (and dare I say, unnecessarily wordy) introduction. But here Eric Drooker has mastered the art of telling a tale in sequential pictures only, without a single word in sight. The nearly monochromatic drawings, engraved in scratchboard and watercolored, and only using bright colors in rare and exceptionally effective instances, are as haunting as they are eye-catching. Sure the story is very simplistic, with authority figures senselessly brutalizing anyone who's different, while the lead character takes a highly improbable journey to a new world. Yes, the main points about oppression and diversity are a bit muddleheaded. But those who dwell on the story's lack of detail or complexity are missing the forest for the trees. The point here is the art, and how wordless communication can incite introspection, empathy, and a love for humanity. This is a masterpiece of artistic storytelling. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars touches the soul.......2004-10-25

I recommend this book highly. I have read some of the other reviews of this book and I think the negative reviews here are way too simplistic and harsh. This book has more depth than black and white. The fact is that there are many themes going on in this book and it is not simply a political novel. It is also about struggles and change that one person can endure. It is about the hope of a child. It is about fighting and struggling for what is right. It is about love and brotherhood. Please, by all means, DO NOT listen to the negative reviews. Anyone that took a simplistic view of this book obviously did not have the brain power or creativity to look deeper to what the book was really saying. This point did not have one simplistic point, it was many points that should leave you flooded with many thoughts in your head, that is of you are an intelligent individual. The fact is, the images are totally left up to interpretation- that is the beauty of pictures. It is a timeless novel which does not have to represent any particular place, time, or person. Each time I have read it, I saw something new and different, with more depth. Each time I finish the book, I have both tears in my eyes as well as hope. It brings both the beauty and sadness of life together in what appears to be black and white, but below the surface is full of color, if you look deep enough. Take my advice and read it many times.

3 out of 5 stars Beauty Marred by Agenda.......2004-06-25

Drooker's one conceit here is the beauty of his work. Every page of the book features woodcut scenes with colour for mood, and is accomplished and aesthetically pleasing. Praises can end there, however.

Blood Song is supposed to be a wonder to read and behold for the fact that there is not a single word balloon - no dialogue, no narrative. And though Drooker certainly propells his story forward through the pages of silence, one might hope that he could offer better than the overly simple tale of a hapless, honest, and beautiful native girl and the vile, oppressive, and censorious authority figures. Really, if there's one cardinal sin a film or book can commit is that of making me feel as if I've been preached at. Blood Song is a textbook example of this.

This is the work of a freshman in college who has just discovered politics - unfortunately for Drooker, college was well over twenty years ago.
