Two disgraced former Secret Service officers team up to solve a series of copy-cat crimes in this exciting new thriller by a master of the game. Sean King was momentarily distracted when a presidential candidate he'd been guarding was assassinated a few feet from where he stood, and Michelle Maxwell left the Service under a similar cloud when she lost a "protectee" to an ingenious kidnapping scheme, events told in Baldacci's typical terse, fast-paced style in Split Second. Now partners in a private investigation firm in a small Virginia town, they're hired to investigate a burglary at the home of a wealthy local family. But even before the chief suspect in the break-in meets his death in a gruesome slaying reminiscent of a serial killer long since caught and punished, King and Maxwell get caught up in a string of other murders, each of which copies the techniques of another madman, from San Francisco's Zodiac Killer to Chicago's infamous John Wayne Gacy. While the two protagonists aren't especially complex or well-developed, the action never stops, and Baldacci's trademark pacing keeps the reader turning pages until the denouement, which unfortunately isn't quite as satisfying as the rest of the novel. --Jane Adams

Why Hour Game: An Exclusive Essay by David Baldacci
It's hard not to notice that the majority of fictional serial killers are cut from the same mold. When David Baldacci wrote Hour Game, he went out of his way to create a murderous original. Read this Amazon.com
exclusive essay to learn how and why he did it.
Book Description
He's copying famous serial killers and the game has just begun.A woman is found murdered in the woods. It seems like a simple case but it soon escalates into a terrible nightmare. Someone is replicating the killing styles of the most infamous murderers of all time. No one knows this criminal's motives...or who will die next. Two ex-Secret Service agents, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, have been hired to defend a man's innocence in a burglary involving an aristocratic, dysfunctional family. Then a series of secrets leads the partners right into the frantic hunt that is confounding even the FBI. For the closer they get to the truth, the closer they get to the most shocking surprise of all.
Customer Reviews:
OK, but..........2007-09-29
This novel was going well, with the search for an apparent serial killer. Then there was a sudden shift, and a confrontation with the killer as the killer's identity was revealed. I was left with the impression that the author had "painted himself into a corner" and suddenly needed some way to end the novel. Maybe the author had a deadline from his publisher, but I think the novel needed a little more work. So, it is OK to read, but not great.
Not the worst book I have read.......2007-08-18
I will admit, this book was a little confusing. Lots of charaters to keep
track of, but it wasn't that bad of a read. Halfway through the book, I did think about not finishing it, but I am glad that I did.
Happy reading,
Carol
The Second Book in the Sean King and Michelle Maxwell Series.......2007-08-17
David Baldacci attended law school at the University of Virginia, and went on to work as a trial lawyer, and later as a corporate lawyer, in Washington, D.C. He is now a full-time writer whose best selling novels include Absolute Power, Total Control, The Winner, The Simple Truth and Saving Faith. He lives in Virginia with his wife and two children.
This is a book about a deranged serial killer (is there any other kind?). The killer taunts the police and their resources by leaving watches on the victims. The watches are set to the hour corresponding to the victims position on his hit list. Even more barbaric the killer strives to reconstruct and replicate notorious murders from the past, trying to improve upon them by meticulous attention to detail.
Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are already investigating another crime, but when they are assigned to help in the serial killer case, they soon begin to realise that the two cases may well be connected. To muddy the waters even further another killer surfaces and this one is imitating the murders carried out by the first . . .
not what I expected from a Baldacci book.......2007-08-09
After reading several of this author's books, I arrived at the conclusion that he could not write a truly "bad" book, which he has not here. However, it is a ho hum, skip a lot of pages book. Way too many characters and they don't seem too believable. I was eager to read this book, having read several of his other ones, especially "The Collector's" and "The Camel Club" (loved that book!) Also, needed some editing - I started counting the number of times thatthe author said King " shot back" - in reply to a statement from other characters, but the count got too high and I gave up. Just cringed when I read another "He shot back". I do hopefully look forward to another book about The Camel Club, though. I would give this book 2 1/2 stars.
Better than Split Second.......2007-07-05
I thought this "sequel" to Split Second was better than it's predecessor, but still not quite up to the level of some of Baldacci's previous offerings. Reminded me a bit of James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series, but more complex. Kept me guessing.

Keep sharp!.......2007-05-14
Working these puzzles is a great way to keep mentally fit, and this collection provides varying levels of challenge and types of brain-builders. Enjoy!
only for crossword lovers.......2007-02-25
this is a great book. you must be an extreme crossword lover. i give it a three because all the puzzles are just too hard for me, not including the find the word. a little unfair rating, but it just wasn't what i expected. i wanted to see at least one suduko puzzle.
Everything..even goof ups!!.......2006-07-31
Not a bad puzzle book really, maybe not as good as some others but Ok nonetheless. However, they skimped on proofing I think, as the easy crossword puzzles are listed as the medium and vice-versa. A little discombobulating!
Puzzles for dad.......2006-07-15
I actually bought this book for my dad - an older gentleman who needs to keep the ol' brain pleasantly occupied. I coupled it with a (ubiquitous) sudoku set, too. He told me last week that he's been rationing them out so he won't finish the book too soon. Great stuff.
Perfect Gift for Those Serving Time.......2006-03-14
I you have a loved one doing some unfortunate incaraceration time, this is a great gift. It helps pass the time, promotes humorous conversation with other cellis, and it stimulates the mind. It will last some time and it is an acceptable gift if you order it and have it shipped from Amazon. It will not be concidered contraband unless they decide to wet it and make a sculpture or something. Everyone enjoyed it.

fun book for kids.......2007-01-19
My 8 year old grandson loves this book that we got him for Christmas. He works on it all the time. Would like more Canadian stuff in it but not really a huge problem. Would buy this for the others when they are older.
Hours of Peace & Quiet.......2006-02-25
My 9-y-o and 6-y-o children LOVED this book! They are a bit on the "geeky" side but also typically quite boisterous. Very diversionary.

Customer Reviews:
You will learn game programming, kind of, but mostly Mike Morrison's game engine........2007-01-15
I gave this book 2 stars, because it has some good points, mostly really bad points.
The good:
You will be able to make basic 2D sprite games in Windows using this book and the source code on the CD. It encourages you to learn basic techniques involved with the other aspects of game development (sound, music, etc). The book comes with several games that you can run right off the CD.
The bad:
This book doesn't really teach you much. In other Sam's Teach Yourself books, you learn each step of what you are doing, and you can put in the source code yourself. In this one, you merely read about PIECES of the source code, and are expected to run it off the disk. So basically, you are paying for a game engine, a bunch of source code examples, and a tutorial on using the game engine.
I would have enjoyed this book much more if it had spent time explaining exactly what the engine does and how to make it do it, not to mention how the code in your program interacts with the engine. It seems to me that this book is mostly for people who want to "cheat" and copy and paste the code to make their games, rather than understanding what they are doing and writing the code themselves. Since I was someone who wanted the latter, I was sorely disappointed.
What's the audience?.......2005-07-29
As far as I can tell, this book is for the beginner. It teaches game programming using C++ and the Win32 API. However, you need a lot of C++ experience before you start this book, so read up. This book also moves at an odd pace. By chapter 3, you're designing a game engine, but then you spend almost the entire book learning to draw sprites and animate them, with a few breaks for input and sound. This book does manage to make acomplishments in some areas where other books fail. You actually create more than one game, whereas other books simply throw a lot of demos at you and culminate in a game. Some topics that I haven't seen anywhere else yet are also covered here, like basic AI, keeping hi-scores, etc. Summary: good if you have a knowledge of DOS C++ and want to get into game programming with the Win32 API, but you may just want to skip this book all together and go straight for DirectX.

Good Starting Point.......2005-07-26
I have been writing games for a number of years now. While I have published a few "action" games for the AMIGA platform, my experience in the windows environment was more with "static games" such as board games and puzzles. Since I already had the experience with action games and Window programming - my reason for buying the book was to learn "how to do program games the right way" rather then just "how to program games".
For me - the book proves to be a very good book, but I think others will find it not as pleasant - I'll explain that later.
As with other SAMS "learn in 24 hours", there are 24 chapters, which theoretically should be completed in an hour each. I think that is an individual thing - in some areas that I felt knowledgeable in, I skimmed through a chapter in 10 minutes. Yet in some areas, I was fiddling with the example and the source code for hours.
There is also an accompanying CD containing a C++ compiler (Borlands C++ trail version), and source code for all the examples in the book. The installation procedure for the CD was painless - although from previous experiences with compilers - that is not always the case - and if you already have a compiler you might want to stick with it and install only the code examples.
The book starts with a short history of games, a quick introduction to window programming (windows and event handling) and continue to discuss the main driver of a game - the game engine. The book does very well to enhance the engine and add surrounding components: basic graphics (chapter 4), bitmaps (chapter 5), keyboard/mouse/joystick handling (chapters 6/7). It is at the end of chapter seven (the whole of chapter 8 actually) - that you get to write your first game, but not to worry - you get to do some coding well before that. The examples in the chapters leading to chapter 8 should prove intriguing enough for those who are serious about the subject of game programming.
From here on - most of the chapters are dedicated to the main visual aspects of the game - sprites and animations. The book teach how to create them, move them around, animate them, testing for collision, working the background and managing the whole lot (chapters 9-12, 17-22). There is a break for music (chapters 13-16) and some info about creating demos for your application and keeping high score (chapters 23-24) - all accompanied by good solid examples and full working games (about five of them).
The great thing about the book is that is does really teach you how to do it right. It clearly explains the ingredients, build them up logically and provide great code for tinkering. The pace is good and you don't find yourself falling asleep. The examples are relevant, and the source code is explained in the relevant chapter to the right level (not every little detail, but covering all the main points). The book also does not fall into the trap of going into 3D, DirectX or other open libraries - those are important for the serious game programmer, but are a different logical unit, better covered in a purposely written book. This book is to teach you about writing games in the correct manner and about making you WANT to learn more - and in that aspect, "it does what it says on the tin".
So where are the problems? Well - the book states in the introduction that they do expect you to have some background of C++ (true) but they don't expect you to have windows programming knowledge. I guess they were hoping to give the basics of window elements (the event handling routine and the windows creation - as well as the windows data types) in the first two chapters - and that is nonsense. The idea of event handling routine and window register is so fundamental to the way a windows environment concepts are being applied - that anyone not accustomed to SOME window programming will find themselves utterly confused and insecure after the second chapter. The other complaint has to do with the writer. Mr. Morrison is supposedly a competent writer - but when he feels that something is hard to explain - he basically tells you "not to worry about it, you'll get it as we go along" - extremely un-reassuring, and he does it quite a few times in the book. He also sometimes uses the complicated (although more robust) coding - which is important for good programming, but might be utterly confusing (for example, the bitmap class cover loading bitmaps from file, resource etc - using the loadimage command and analysing the bitmap structure, making it a hard read - while a simple loadbitmap and select object commands would have built a shorter, less robust but more reader friendly code) - Last, it must be noted that if you are using a different compiler, the source might need some adjustments - but generally, the more experienced user should find it straightforward.
Overall, I found the book a very good introduction to 2D game programming, and it did left me wanting to explore farther. I would recommend it to those who have some window programming under their belt, but are new to game programming. In that category - this is one of the better books around.

excellent for a sim-city addict!!.......2007-03-09
i got this and its helped me out tons and now iunderstand the game alot more!
very good guide to an excellent game.......2006-08-09
Everyone in our family LOVES Sim City 4. It is addictive. But while the game interface may be fairly intuitive, the strategies and tips that help you build really big cities can be elusive. This guide gives you all the details you need and gives many useful tips for taking your simulation to a higher level. The book is well organized into chapters on getting started, modes of play, zoning, finance, utilities, transportation, education, rewards etc, and finishes with multiple city play, business deals, disasters, landmarks and even cheats; however, this book does not offer help with the Rush Hour expansion that may be included with your game, so there is no help on driving the many vehicles and their accompanying missions. I also found that some of the things I especially wanted to learn about, like monorails, were not included, so there must have been subsequent changes to the software. Stil this book has been very helpful. There are lots of pictures, though they are a bit fuzzy.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants a handy list of the many details needed to step up the gameplay.
Unfortunately a very weak and indescriptive manual.......2004-03-21
This manual is a very weak and nearly completely useless manual for newbies trying to tackle the scope of this complex game. The game itself is challenging enough but this manual only scratches the surface of what needs to be done in order to run a successful city. A dissapointment. The Simcity 4 "Rush Hour" expansion pack though corrects many of the mistakes of this older manual.
Mediocre at best.......2004-02-13
This is highly technical, but not very helpful. It doesn't give you any ideas on how to build a better city. Read it if you've never played any SimCity games before, but otherwise, try out the tutorials first before you spend money on this book.
OK, but not great.......2003-11-20
This guide is a step up from the travesties that were foisted off on fans of SimCity 3000, but still leaves much to be desired. Long on mostly-useless facts, but short of any real strategy or commentary.
Why, oh why, can't we see something on par with the old SimCity 2000: Power, Politics and Planning guide? Now THERE was an excellent companion book for a simulation game.

Wrong generation.......2007-01-11
We got our son a new Mindstorm for Christmas - the NXT. This book was designed for the previous generation of the Mindstorm, so was of no use to us. The description on-line was not clear to us that we were wasting our money.
Whoa.......2004-03-02
This is the perfect compilation set of fun, and challenging projects which can easily be manipulated for your own robotic tastes. The sources of this book are the masters in the field, and do an astounding job sharing their wealth of knowledge.
Where do they get these people?.......2002-10-26
Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch.

Customer Reviews:
Nicely Done!.......2007-05-06
This book provides some very lovely, refreshing ideas & designs that will knit up quickly for yourself, or as a gift. The designs allow some "play" with newer yarns on the market & will appeal to the younger crowd, as well. There's a wide variety of patterns offered. I don't get much time to knit, but I love to knit. This book was a great solution for my personal situation - a hectic home schedule! The photography is nicely done, provides good photos of each project. A little bit of imagination on behalf of the individual knitter would take what this book has to offer, far! It's a nice surprise!

I agree with someone said below about this book being tacky. There are only a couple of patterns that I thought I might use, but really, you could probably find better variations elsewhere. If I had had a chance to look through this book in the store I wouldn't have bought it.
Great New Book.......2005-07-13
I first borrowed this book from my local library, and I found that there were so many projects that I wanted to try that I ended up deciding that I wanted to buy my own copy of the book.
The projects are relatively easy ones, as one would expect from a book with this title. If you are looking for a particularly challenging project then this book probably isn't for you. But if you want to make something fun and creative that will work up fairly quickly, then I am sure you will find something that appeals to you in this book. The projects are attractive and there is a nice variety of projects offered. The photos are excellent, giving you an accurate idea of what the project will look like when completed. Best of all, the directions are crystal clear --easy to read and easy to follow.
I intend to make many items from this book -- for myself as well as for gifts.
Great book for renewed knitter (me!).......2005-07-11
I borrowed this book from my local library, and I have to say I am thrilled with it! I was never a very good knitter, preferring to sew, quilt, or crochet, but with relatively easy patterns like these, I expect to improve greatly, if only through practice from making several of the projects. Although the patterns are fairly basic, perhaps too much so for more experienced knitters, the use of relatively inexpensive, widely available yarns, makes them look completely different from similar projects found in a typical "learn to knit" book made from garden-variey acrylic yarn. I'm a very visual person, but have trouble picturing in my mind how a certain project would look made up in a fancier yarn, so I really appreciate the great photos of these projects made in nicer yarns - different from those I use in my humanitarian work, for example. I like the looks of the finished projects and the clearly written patterns so well that about half the people on my Christmas gift list will be receiving items made from this book (yes, even the guys!).
Listing the brand name and specific color of the yarn used in each project has been very helpful to me as I've shopped online for similar yarns before hitting the stores.
In short, I think this book is great, and I look forward to adding it to my personal library in the near future.
Tackiest Knitting Book Ever!.......2005-07-08
Don't waste your money. About half of the patterns use fluffy novelty yarns like paton's cha cha or boa in simple items like scarfs (a fuzzy scarf knit all in garter stitch! Does anyone really need this pattern? And a tank top made completly out of boa yarn!) You can get the same patterns for free from the ball band. There are one or 2 patterns that are alright (an afghan and I can't remember the other one). But nothing that anyoneshould be aloud to wear.
