1 out of 5 stars Road Trip???.......2007-10-06

These two authors basically drive around the country and pour out verbal diahrea on boring facts about their trip that no one in their right mind should care about. They are actually proud of the fact that they only???? spent 80k in one year of travelling. They must have lived like anaimals! Also, Carol seems to use the exclamation point way too excessively in her writing! If you are not retired and are somewhat of a young age please avoid this book. I did give it one star because if you have a good sense of humour you might enjoy her little stories!

4 out of 5 stars For me, more of a 3 1/2 star book but since halves are not an option, 4 stars........2007-10-03

The first chapters of this book provide excellent guidance for planning a one-year trip away from home. The authors guide you through the entire process of planning and preparation. Definitely four star information. The authors purchased a small RV, set up their budget, rented out their house and got ready to go. This book shares what worked for them and walks you through all the necessary steps that need to be accomplished prior to your departure including a planned/actual budget and a more frugal version. Both budgets seemed high to me, but if the trip were made today, both might be a real bargin.

The second portion of the book, a journal of their year on the road, seemed sketchy and a bit disjointed. There isn't a lot of information on any of the areas visited, so not as useful as it might of been for some actual travel planning. They spent so many nights at hotels that I'm not sure the motor home was a good investment, but the authors thought it was.

If you are considering traveling away from home for an extended period of time, you will find this book a helpful addition to your library along with one or two good travel guides. If, however, you are more interested in reading about traveling the USA in a small RV, Barbara Thacker's books, while older, are fun armchair travel reading along with Ron and Barb Hofmeister's books on full timing in a much larger RV.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and loaded with great info.......2007-08-26

This is a very entertaining book loaded with great information about extended traveling. Be it just a few weeks or a year or more, the authors have dispensed great ideas on how to handle the everyday life you leave behind (for whatever period of time).

I finished the book in about a week, reading it for it's entertainment value. I will be retiring soon and my wife and I plan on taking extended "vacations" in our RV. I will read the book again (and again) so I can garner as much information as I can.

5 out of 5 stars listen to the voices of first-hand experience.......2007-07-19

Phil and Carol White amply demonstrate that anyone can live "a road trip dream" as they thoughtfully share their proven insider tips for enjoyable RV travels. Interesting to discover, according to the authors, that a big mistake first-timers make is overplanning. Read this book and "just do it!"

1 out of 5 stars I'd like to start with $80,000 a year too! .......2007-03-09

My family and I are preparing to spend a year full-timing in our 5th wheel camper and thought this book would be helpful in some regards to that. Unfortunately, there were no real bits of information for us to use in planning for our trip. Actually, there was not much at all that was helpful for our purposes.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic Drivel.......2007-05-31

I was hoping for some intelligent insight into Hillary Clinton when I bought this book. Clearly, much can be said on both sides of this subject. I am trying to listen carefully to both and then make up my mind about her.

This is the equivalent to a rant from a right-wing Rosie O'Donnell. Don't waste your money on this rehash of old news.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing coincidence.......2007-05-17

It is quite an amazing co-incidence that at least in some ways this book presented as "fact" seems to mirror a book presented as "fiction" which is entitled The Empress Project. Both books tell of an American woman of boundless and unbridled ambition seeking ruthlessly to become president of the United States. Author Tyrrell calls Hillary "Madame Hillary", while Dr. Little, author of the other book, writes a story of political intrigue about a CHICOM plot to make an evil American woman Empress of America. Are the similarities of these two books merely coincidental ?The Empress Project

1 out of 5 stars Hillary-mania : A wonderful thing!.......2005-06-30

Whatever Hillary Clinton says and does is perfectly alright with me! If Hillary says it, then it's the truth. Hillary is perfect in every way! I love Hillary so very much!

5 out of 5 stars Great book about a big liar.......2005-02-06

R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. should be given a lot of thanks for exposing the liar named Hillary Rodham.

Thank you R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Swing and a miss, a good article expanded to a book.......2004-08-19

Plainly stated, I was disappointed with this book. I am certainly part of the target audience for this book, being pretty disgusted with the Clinton duo. However, what I hoped for was a factual tome of the flaws, failings, and deceit of the junior senator from NY. What I got was a repetetive, smarmy, and poorly constructed screed against her that offered little new information and was so partisan in tone that it became untrustworthy even as a source of dirt. Authors on both sides of the political debate need to realize that too snippy a tone tends to turn off the average reader.

In more detail, the book is full of allegations of radical beliefs, wretched interpersonal skills, and bald-faced deceit but precious few illustrations of same. Don't tell me that Senator Clinton is a horrid person to work for with no sense of two-way loyalty, give me examples. Don't quote the radicals who supposedly influenced her beliefs, show me examples of her demonstrating those beliefs.

In short, while there is some interesting information in this book, it misses the mark. It could have been an exhaustive record of the senator's changing of beliefs, opportunism, and political deceit. Intead, we get an annoyingly repetetive and shrill attack without a great deal of substance. For anyone but those who simply want to nod and agree without learning anything new, this book is a wash.

A friend told me about this book- it saved me in Anatomy my weakest subject in school- it explained stuff better than first aid for the boards, great vignette questions. Friends said that nerve questions on the exam were similar to those in the book.
An absolute must buy!

3 out of 5 stars A good review, but watch for errors.......2004-06-16

This is a helpful book for hitting the high points of gross anatomy in a concise and easy-to-read format. Pluses of the book include simple illustrations and clinical correlates (and a lower cost than most USMLE review books), but that seems to come at a cost--there are a number of errors throughout the book, most notably regarding the nervous system. I would highly recommend using a different source to study autonomic innervation. Otherwise, this is a good reminder of those long-forgotten anatomy facts in a quick and easy format.

    Book Description

This book is about the development of white women's liberation, black feminism and Chicana feminism in the 1960s and 1970s, the era known as the "second wave" of U.S. feminist protest. Benita Roth explores the ways that feminist movements emerged from the Civil Rights/Black Liberation movement, the Chicano movement, and the white left, and the processes that supported political organizing decisions made by feminists. She traces the effects that inequality had on the possibilities for feminist unity and explores how ideas common to the left influenced feminist organizing.

4 out of 5 stars USMLE Road Map.......2007-03-09

I bought this book after reading a bunch of reviews on it. Just recently finished reading it to review neuro. I feel like I finally understand what they were trying to teach us last year.
I give it 4 stars only because it's kind of long and dense with text. The wording is pretty technical and sometimes you have to think really hard about what they're saying.
The clinical correlations are good. All you need to know about that particular tract/system/whatever is all in once place.
I would recommend this for anyone who needs a good neuro refresher.

    5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2007-02-21

As a first year medical student I believe Dr. White to be one of the best professors I have ever had. This book is clear and to the point. I highly recommend it.

This review book presents the info in a simple and easily understood manner. A good reference for the boards

    5 out of 5 stars Why didn't I get this earlier?.......2005-09-22

I had to struggle with neuroanatomy in my first year. To make things worse, some of the lecturers weren't exactly stellar. If I'd had this book earlier, I could have done way better in my tests. The organization of the book is logical, and the content is rich in that the important facts (i.e., those that are often asked in tests!) are summarized in an easy-to-read format. I've purchased all the USMLE Road Map books that have been released to date, and I have to say that this one stands out.

5 out of 5 stars Finally got Neuro.......2004-11-27

I wish I had this book during Neuro in school- after reading it, I understand the awful tracts and lesions for the first time along with the basal ganglia and cerebellum. The visual defects section is amazing. I found out about this book after hearing Dr. White teach for Kaplan. A must buy to get through Step 1 Neuro questions.

    Book Description

Hailed as "one of the best" (Toronto Sun) writers of contemporary suspense fiction, international bestselling author John Connolly returns with an electrifying novel featuring his acclaimed private detective, Charlie Parker.

In South Carolina, a young black man faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Marianne Larousse, daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. It's a case that nobody wants to touch, deeply rooted in old evil -- and old evil is Charlie Parker's specialty. He's about to enter a living nightmare, a dreamscape of sorrow haunted by the murderous specter of a hooded woman, by a black car waiting for a passenger that never comes, and by the sinister complicity of both friends and enemies in Larousse's brutal death. Soon, all will face a final reckoning in an unearthly realm where the paths of the living and the dead converge. A place known only as the White Road.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Connolly strikes a wonderful balance here.......2007-06-11

    with characterizations.

In this novel, the fourth in the Charlie "Bird" Parker series, the reader gets to find out much more about Louis and Angel than has ever been revealed before.

Prior to this novel, what the reader knew about the relationship between the two men and Parker was that Parker had basically saved Angel's life while he (Angel) was in prison and that because of all that Parker had done for Angel, he now had the undying loyalty and support of not just the "diminutive ex-burglar," but also of that ex-burglar's partner, Louis. With friends like these two, Parker doesn't need much other backup.

But in this novel, what we know of the two men upon whom Parker relies more than any other human beings, we discover what brought Louis and Angel together (hilarious stuff), and we also get to see a bit more of their relationship (I do mean "a bit"; Connolly isn't likely to give us a whole lot of description of gentleness or couple-type descriptions involving these two men). We get Angel's background as well as Louis's, and that means we can finally see these two men as more rounded characters. I'm glad of that, as they're two of my all-time favorite characters from ANY series.

Okay--don't read further if you've not read the novels before this one, as I'm going to refer to action from the book just before this one in pretty specific terms.

This novel picks up months after the action of The Killing Kind, the novel in which Angel was taken by the madman villain, Faulkner. In that novel, Angel was brutalized by the man and his son and also had a patch of his skin viciously removed. At the start of this novel, he is still recovering from that debilitating injury, and trying to deal with Parker's decision not to kill Faulkner when he had the chance.

This, to me, made for a really intriguing novel. Angel and Louis have always backed Parker up, and the banter between the three men (as well as the mostly-unspoken but definitely clear bond between them) makes it easy to think of them as a team, but they're not, at least not when it comes to morality. That becomes clear when Parker chooses not to kill Angel's tormentor just minutes after a wounded Angel has killed Pudd, the man choking the life out of Parker. In essence, the moral distinctions between Parker and his two friends are never clearer than they are here. They're clear to the reader and they're clear to Angel as well, which makes for a very interesting storyline as he does what he needs to do in order to regain his sanity in the face of not only physical pain (from skin grafts, etc.) but also the return of his past, a past which he had succeeded in mentally pushing away through his partnership with Louis, which allowed him to feel, for the first time in his life, as though he might not be a victim any longer.

It's a measure of Mr. Connolly's skill that this part of the storyline is interwoven quite wonderfully with themes of racism and retribution. And Parker's relationship with a pregnant Rachel is skillfully handled here as well. I don't mean to minimize her importance in all these novels. His relationship with her is certainly one that leads to interesting moral conflicts for Parker. He is still so. . .I dunno. . .damaged by what happened to his first wife and child, and while he knows more strongly than he ever has that their deaths were not his fault, he is still haunted by them, and his relationship with Rachel continues to be affected by that.

I hope you'll pick this one up. But hey--pick them all up! You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars AN INTRIGUING STORY.......2006-07-28

This fourth in the Charlie Parker series has all the evil characters we've come to expect from a Parker outing, as well as an enormous amount of historical (both real and fictional) background on racial abuses in the south. While the writing is lyrical and the characters are fully fleshed, The White Road doesn't have quite the power of the previous books. The plot hinges on a motive (which I will not give away) that didn't ring true or believable to me for bringing Parker into the case of Atys Jones's forthcoming murder trial. There's plenty of activity in swampy settings; Louis and Angel come to the forefront this time out. And there's enough torture, gore, murder and mayhem to satisfy readers who've come to expect a thoroughly disturbing adventure from Connolly. The glue that is intended to hold the plot together is a little thin, leaving cracks and gaps in the whole. Entertaining but not quite up to the very high standard the author has set with his previous books.

4 out of 5 stars Weird but Good.......2006-07-21

John Connolley is almost always superb (read Every Dead Thing and you'll understand), but nobody is perfect all the time, and The White Road is the closest he's come to a misstep. I mean, it's still a very, very good book...and if I hadn't read his other books I might have given him 5 stars, but when measured against the previous Charlie Parker novels this one comes up just a little short. I still recommend it, though.

3 out of 5 stars A notion of evil-- compelling, but messy to read. .......2005-10-21

This is my first John Connolly book, and it may be that part of my confusion comes from the fact that I have not read the other books in the series. Although I was ultimately able to catch up with Pudd and the Faulkner and the Traveling Man, there were an overhwelming number of backstory threads to assemble before I really got a full view of this book. The resulting reading experience for a first-time view of the series is jumpy and incomplete.

I liked Charlie Parker as a hero. I like the darkness and I am even willing to buy the flirtation with the horror/dark fantasy genre. A psychic detective is an interesting idea, and Connolly does a good job in fleshing him out.

The structural issues were the biggest flaw in the book for me. I disliked the way that it jumped times and place (too often, and without much sense). The use of foreshadowing irritated me (example: "I never sam him again, and I wonder now if my intervention cost him his life."). I also have a personal pet peeve with authors who manage to work every last loose end into one story. Particularly in a novel with so many threads (Faulkner, Cassie Blythe, Marianne Larousse, the lynchings, the White Road) it is a whole lot to swallow that they all end up linking so neatly together.

Overall, I liked the book enough that I will probably circle back around and start with the first in the series. I will hold off on an opinion as to whether I would recommend the series or not until after I have done so. In any case, I would not recommend that another first time Connolly reader start here.

3 out of 5 stars In a way, bizarre for the genre..............2005-07-05

As I said, the author inserts paragraphs using poetic prose with polished wording mixed with plain action language.
Anticipation and suspense have to be worked better as well as the after effect of twist and turns to provoke the anxiety of the reader to grab the book, not too much effort devoted to this point
Characters are slowly crafted but swiftly killed as book is coming to an end, there are just too many, as well as events surrounding them
Elements from the surreal and fantastic worlds blend with reality so some chapters get difficult to follow and in the end to understand what the author had in mind

      Book Description

Linked historically, culturally, and geographically, the counties that make up southwestern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee are also connected by a shared decorative arts tradition. "Great Road Style," so called because of the region's historical importance as a stage route connecting the eastern seaboard with the western frontier, is evidenced in distinctive forms of furniture, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. Yet until now, the area's rugged geography--and the isolation of its communities--has prevented systematic documentation of its decorative artifacts. With Great Road Style: The Decorative Arts Legacy of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, Betsy White takes readers on an engaging tour of an underexplored region's striking material culture, and in doing so fosters a new appreciation of its role in the development of American decorative arts.

The first substantive effort to conduct primary research in a largely undocumented territory, the survey upon which this book is based involved thousands of hours' worth of fieldwork conducted across two states in an attempt to offer the most detailed accounting possible of handmade objects produced along the Great Road before 1940. The eventual product of that exhaustive research was an archive of photographs, slides, and data sheets on more than two thousand objects representing diverse sectors of the survey area. In organizing and providing a narrative for this treasure trove of material, White and her research team have defined and delineated for the first time what constitutes Great Road Style.

Lavishly illustrated with compelling examples, and including a full listing of the artisans who have been identified to date, Great Road Style is a beautiful and historically informative catalog showcasing the diverse arts and crafts of this region. It will be a valuable resource for collectors, museum curators, antique dealers, and indeed anyone interested in southern culture or the decorative arts.

3 out of 5 stars Good message, but would benefit from an editor.......2007-07-26

White has a good message: Our fear-based, looking-good tendencies are not healthy for us and perpetuate unhealthy behavior in others. He discusses why we become this way, measures he took to lessen this in himself and suggests how we can do likewise.

I did find the book tiresome to follow for a number of reasons including White's wordy, informal writing style, and his frequent reliance on quoting cryptic poetry.

I don't know if this has been recently corrected, but the copy I got looked like a draft: page numbers show as XX in the table of contents; numerous sections of the book simply have a section title and the words [to come] underneath; where graphics are supposed to be has [insert graphic here]; improper margins - the text seems to run off the page in places; and is full of typographic errors.

5 out of 5 stars Grab a pen - you're going to want to take notes!.......2006-09-20

No matter how many times I read this book, something new always resonates with me. These are life lessons, and a lot of them seem to take a whole lifetime to master...but the pursuit is the worthiest you'll ever embark upon. I strive every day to shake my unhealthy "normal" behaviors and embrace the spirit of this book - one that is laughing, open-hearted, through life.

5 out of 5 stars What a trip to take.......2002-12-05

Bowen White takes you to the ultimate place, your inner self. His insight into the human mind is incredible. If you are seeking to find more about yourself, and why you live the life you do, this is the book for you. I have heard this wonderful man speak live and have read his book twice. It is incredible to walk a trail of the world with him and look at yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Normal's not only unhealthy - it can kill you.......2001-03-17

Bowen White M.D. truly opens your eyes about what's important in life and how the stress that comes from what other people put into your inbox can really take you down. This is an easy to read, step by step eye opener about how the things we accept for normal in our life are slowly killing us and the book gives you significant, solid steps on how to take control over your life back from the world we live in and really learn to live. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars author is a testament to his words.......2001-03-14

I've known Bowen White for many years and so my review could be considered biased........however, I can honestly say that he has always been "out there" i.e., not being so normal, making people laugh all the time, and strikes me as a very healthy person ... he follows his own words and ideas and has written a very honest book. I'd say we can all learn something from him. He spoke to a keen group of university students here on a recent visit and had a great time involving them in taking a different path toward solving life's challenges. His enthusiasm for life and for all people comes through in this book.
