5 out of 5 stars Nervous Water.......2006-12-25

"Nervous Water" is the 21st Brady Coyne novel by William G. Tapply whom I feel is one of the finest mystery writers working today. Brady is called by his Uncle Moze in Maine to try to find his daughter Cassie who has apparently disappeared. Cassie is actually Moze's niece, but he and his wife had raised Cassie as their own. Brady begins to search for his cousin and finds that most people who are close to her are not cooperative. Her husband Richard Hurley is not helpful to Brady and he wonders if Hurley knew something of her disappearance. When Cassie's former lover is killed, Brady knows that someone will stop at nothing to keep Cassie's whereabouts a secret. He even wonders if Cassie is still alive. When Moze suffers a heart attack, Brady knows that he needs to find Cassie. There is also a suplot in which Brady's girlfriend, Evie, is acting strangely. I gave this novel a 5 star because it is a fast paced and very suspenseful read. The only thing I felt was strange about the plot was the fact that Brady had not visited his uncle in 30 years, but I overlooked that and highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another page turner by William Tapply.......2006-06-15

William Tapply has written another winner in his Brady Coyne series. All books will stand on their own. I won't give away the plot. (Read the Amazon summary and other reviewers)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and read it in two sittings. Lots of twists and turns, there are some surprises and some---well you could guess whodunit. Great book for beach, poolside or plane.

4 out of 5 stars First Brady Coyne novel I have read.......2006-03-22

I enjoyed this novel-an interesting and easy read. Storyline was intriging, plot twists convincing, and character development about as deep as a book of this length can provide. I could best describe the book as Greg IIles-lite.

3 out of 5 stars A Dense Family Mystery That Doesn't Quite Make Sense.......2006-02-05

Brady becomes reacquainted with is favorite uncle from Maine, whom he hasn't seen or heard from in 30 years. Already you can see one problem with this book. That's an unlikely set of circumstances.

If you get past that one, Mr. Tapply throws you another unlikely event, Brady's uncle's daughter won't talk to her father and has gone missing. Uncle Moze wants Brady to be sure Cassie is all right and to get her to call Moze. Even if Brady can succeed in finding her, will she be willing to call?

Brady finds himself drawn to do something, especially after Moze has a heart attack. Brady isn't sure that Moze will survive without seeing Cassie.

Arriving at Cassie's house, Brady finds a family that seems to be pretending that nothing's wrong . . . but something clearly is.

As Brady checks out the alternatives by visiting with her family and friends, he seems stymied when a lead suddenly appears. From there the story takes many unexpected turns that will keep you turning the pages.

If you can buy into the story of Brady's connection to Moze and Cassie's relationship with Moze, you have a four or five star book on your hand. There are marvelous scenes of lobstering and fishing that make you want to head for Maine. The title theme of "nervous water" is nicely developed in the book. The mystery itself isn't all that mysterious, but it'll do.

There's an edgy backdrop of tension between Evie and Brady that adds a little personal touch to the story without advancing the plot very much.

After reading the book, I found myself wishing that Mr. Tapply had written this book as a case involving non-relatives of Brady's. I think the story would have worked better.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into Brady's Coyne family.......2006-01-02

His uncle who he has not seen in thirty years contacts Boston lawyer Brady Coyne. It seems his Uncle Moze had a falling out with his daughter Cassandra and he has not seen her in a year and a half. Recently finding out that he has heart problems, Moze wants to make amends before it it is too late. The problem is that Cassie cannot be found. Moze wants Brady's help in finding Cassie. Is it a missing person or is it murder?

This is another fine entry in this underrated mystery series. NERVOUS WATER gives us a glimpse into Brady's family on his mother's side. There are a few skeletons rattling around on the old family tree. The story was well plotted and very engaging. In addition to the missing person case, there are a few sub plotlines that are interesting and keep the story moving forward. Brady is not the most dynamic of characters, he is a little to laid-back for that, but the character dynamic keep the pages turning....Brady and his girlfriend, Brady and his secretary, Brady and his dog. Tappley did a great job in setting the scene in small-lakeside town Maine.

Zane's legion of fans can't get enough of her way of telling a juicy, sexy story. In Nervous, the New York Times bestselling queen of erotica brings us a tale of a woman with a split personality. Jonquinette has always been nervous around men, but on the weekends her alter ego, Jude, goes on intense sexual escapades. When Jonquinette seeks the help of Dr. Marcella Spencer, the psychiatrist Zane originated in her bestselling novel Addicted, Jude's response is to go on a sexual rampage. In the meantime, Jonquinette becomes interested in her new neighbor, Mason, but Jude has no intention of letting Jonquinette fall in love -- not when Jude's having so much fun. "Zane's legion of fans can't get enough of her way of telling a juicy, sexy story. Now, the New York Times bestselling queen of erotica brings us a tale of a woman with a split personality -- one highly sexed and one sexually repressed. Jonquinette Pierce has always been nervous when it comes to men. She took a job dealing with mostly women so she could avoid men. She goes to work and comes straight home during the week, but on the weekends her other self, Jude, takes over and goes on intense sexual escapades. Jonquinette recognizes that her alter ego is a problem and seeks to resolve it with the help of Dr. Marcella Spencer, the psychiatrist Zane originated in her bestselling novel Addicted. Jude's response is to get angry and go on a sexual rampage. In the meantime, Jonquinette becomes interested in her new neighbor, Mason, after having a conversation with him at a mutual friend's wedding. Jude has no intention of letting Jonquinette fall in love and find happiness at her expense. Jude is having way too much fun using the body she shares with Jonquinette. This ""two faces of Eve"" scenario is a fun fantasy for women who have imagined their own alter ego behaving badly in a sexual way. But for the leading lady of Nervous, this is a nightmare. Based on a short story of the same title from her bestselling collection, The Sex Chronicles, Nervous is classic Zane with an edge. So, relax, sit back. You're in for a nerve-tingling read. "

Wow, that chick(or should I say chicks) was(were) craaazy....I initially rented Nervous from the library, but I need a personal copy so I will be purchasing and rereading this book soon. I loved this book because it had all the raunchy sex scenes Zane is so well-known for, but it was soo much more. This book was amazing, and even without the sex I'd give it 5 stars! One of Zane's best yet....more like this to come I hope

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME AUTHOR AND GREAT READ!!.......2007-09-03

I LOVE THIS BOOK I JUST FINISHED IT!!!THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK THAT I HAVE READ OF ZANE'S BUT I AM MOST DEF GOING TO READ SOME MORE!!!

5 out of 5 stars another great book by Zane.......2007-08-01

I just finished reading this book and I must admit that I finished it rather quickly. This book was too good to put down. It had that flare that only Zane can bring. It did have some common intrests from her book Addicted, but I don't think there was anything to make you think of Addicted other than the characters showing up in this book. This really makes you think about what a child has to go through and what their mind does to cope with certain situations. I really loved Addicted and in turn I absolutley loved this book as well. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

4 out of 5 stars A Creative Story.......2007-07-30

Zane: An author's name that is ubiquitous in the Prince George's County section of Maryland, probably because Zane resides not far from here. I've been hearing her name since 2003, and since I'm such an avid reader, it's surprising that I just finished my first book authored by her today (July 30, 2007.) In some ways Zane writes similar to authors I am familiar with such as Eric Dickey, Terry McMillan and Omar Tyree, but she has this seemingly eerie creativity within her work, something I immediately picked up on when reading "Nervous."

As "Nervous" opens, we meet its main character, Jonquinette Pierce. Jonquinette is a boringly conventional, hard-working, and pretty much anti-sociable woman who has never had a relationship with the opposite sex. While Zane doesn't necessarily illustrate her as miserable, it is obvious that Jonquinette yearns for a few things. A few pages into the story, we meet Jude, the sexually-uninhibited, cruel, crass and blatant "other side" of Jonquinette. Jonquinette suffers from Multiple Personalities Disorder. Throughout the story, Zane goes back and forth, from Jonquinette to Jude, and what a bumpy ride she takes us on! Once Jude becomes cognizant that she suffers from this illness, she seeks help and finds it in Marcella, a sharp-minded psychiatrist. Marcella shines from the time she is introduced! Not only is she an amicable woman, but she finds ways to help Jonquinette that impressed me.

Jonquinette has a very simple life which consists of going to work on weekdays, coming home to continue her office work, and going to church on Sundays. Jude, though? Ha! She took over during the weekends and had plenty of dangerous sexual escapades with random fellows. When Jonquinette would resurface, she often had residue, torn up clothing, and other signs that she had been with a male. She was completely perplexed as to how this transpired!

Jonquinette tells Marcella all of these things and Marcella finds a way to figure it all out: why these personalities were so different and when and why they would take over when they did.

As the story progresses Jonquinette finds a wonderful man by the name of Mason. Even after he finds out about her mental issues, he opts to stay with her. We also have the pleasure of meeting Jonquinette's parents, who play a large part in why their daughter has such serious mental issues.

This is a good read, however, it doesn't receive a 5 star rating because the ending didn't capture me like I feel it should have. It was alright, but endings are usually what make the story memorable, but this time, the story itself will make it memorable. I recommend this book. It's a nice read.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-06-16

I enjoyed this book but not as much as Addicted.

It's about a young woman, Jonquinette who has multiple personalities. One of them, Jude, is addicted to sex. Jonquinette is the complete opposite...she's a virgin.

Jude is really CRAZY and puts Jonquinette in dangerous situations. If it sounds confusing, read the book for clarity.

Book Description

This stunning first novel, set in colonial Rhodesia during the 1960s, centers on the coming of age of a teenage girl, Tambu, and her relationship with her British-educated cousin Nyasha. Tambu, who yearns to be free of the constraints of her rural village, especially the circumscribed lives of the women, thinks her dreams have come true when her wealthy uncle offers to sponsor her education. But she soon learns that the education she receives at his mission school comes with a price. At the school she meets the worldly and rebellious Nyasha, who is chafing under her father's authority. Raised in England, Nyasha is so much a stranger among her own people that she can no longer speak her native language. Tambu can only watch as her cousin, caught between two cultures, pays the full cost of alienation.

5 out of 5 stars Two very intelligent Shona girls lapse into cynicism and disappointment upon realizing that an elite education is not a panacea.......2006-08-28

This novel is loosely autobiographical and takes place in the 60's and 70's in colonial Zimbabwe, then called Rhodesia. Tambu is a young girl from a very poor rural family. She is forced to live in the shadow of her favored older brother. Tambu begs her lazy sexist father to be able to attend school like her older brother but he feels she should stay home and learn to cook. Tambu is determined and goes to great lengths to earn the money to pay her school fees. She hits pay dirt when her jerk brother, who has taunted her and rubbed his privilege position in her face, suddenly dies. Tambu gets to attend the mission school in his place. There she teems up with her cousin Nyasha. Nyasha's father is head of the mission school, is the most well educated villager, and real tyrant. Nyasha's family has recently returned from England where her father completed his master's degree. Nyasha is seen as a snob by the locals because she has forgotten the Shona language and dresses like a Brit.

Tambu is very aware of just how "privileged" she is to be her uncle's charity case. As she witnesses her cousin Nyasha's rebelliousness Tambu's feistiness dissipates. Unlike Nyasha Tambu's position is precarious and she decides to survive by keeping quiet and trying her best not to cause any discord. Tambu has a rude awakening as she learns that her elite education sets her apart from her compatriots, but she really doesn't fit into colonial set either. She also must confront the realization that education is not a cure for sexism and racism.

The issues of colonialism, sexism, racism, hypocrisy, and the pros and cons of education are subtly and skillfully examined through the eyes of two teenage Zimbabwean girls. I did a graduate class project on this book. There are a lot of critical commentaries regarding this novel on the Internet. Dangarembga has also written several plays and films. There is another novel by a Zimbabwean author about girls and education called Zenzele by Moraire. Zimbabwe is also having a lot of problems right now, mostly thanks to a lunatic dictator. There are many organizations trying to help. If you want to help do an Internet search for "Zimbabwe, women, and education."

5 out of 5 stars The Burden of Being.......2005-01-23

The troubles and turmoil of life often present us with guiding burdens, mountains that not only seem but are truly impossible to climb, and boundaries put in place to check even the strongest of wills. These mountains, boulders, and impassable rivers serve as a standard, a ceiling and a foundation; created by the society in which we take our very breath. So when we find ourselves stuck in the very system that we create, who can we blame? Who can we turn to for rescuing? These are the very questions that narrator Tambudzai learns to ask in Tsitsi Dangarembga's novel NERVOUS CONDITIONS.

Throughout her young adult life, Tambudzai witnesses many cultural tendencies of her people and struggles internally with what she is being taught versus what she observes and believes to be right. Aside from her Rhodesian homeland being colonized by the British, she also wrestles with getting an education in a country where an education is seen as wasted on women. The role of men over women in this very patriarchal society serves as the backbone of NERVOUS CONDITIONS and operates as a means to compare different women's struggle to survive that cast-iron system. Through Tambudzai's eyes, readers see how her cousin Nyasha rebels against her father - the family leader, proclaimed prince, and headmaster of the school at the Mission. Readers see the difference between Tambudzai's subservient mother and her mother's defiant sister. We also see how this society treats a woman just as educated as her husband. Following Tambudzai as she progresses towards higher learning and gains a deeper understanding of the world that surrounds her, literary audiences discover just how suffocating it is to deal with the burdens of simply surviving.

Many themes course through NERVOUS CONDITIONS making it an excellent novel for discussion and evaluation. Aside from the obvious men/women theme, a few other issues in the novel are the dangers and benefits of colonization, the necessity of education, and Christianity vs. traditional African religions. I also liked the importance of food and the role it played throughout the novel, especially at the end with Nyasha's rebellion. Exceptionally written, Dangarembga's novel, although about the learning period during a young teenager's life, is not child's play. This is a very adult novel filled with mature situations and intellectual food for meditation. The characters are well developed and the author takes time to draw scenes for her audience. You can see the poverty when she shows it to you just as well as you can see the surplus when it exists. Never have I read a novel that so intensely and effectively relays the burdens some people bear up under to simply be.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Riveting.......2004-12-08

I read this book for the first time when I was in Zimbabwe for an upper level African Literature class and thought I would die! As a young African woman I can totally relate to everything that Nyasha went through and having relatives like Tambu I foud her character completely believable. I have heard from a person who knew the author and her dad that the book is based on her life...don't quote me on this. But in that case it is even more impressive. I totally disagree with people namely one who said the book was flat and inconsistent. Things like this actually do happen and people do actually live their lives like this and this is Tsitsi's take on these issues and hers alone. I don't know, I could go on and on. I have read this book 7 times and have gotten some of my really good friends to read it just so they understand me and my culture. I might suggest we read it for my book club.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2004-06-16

I would say that it is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but I'll just give it 3. I liked the ending, which I found haunting and riveting. As for the rest of the book...sometimes it just moved slowly in a boring way - like an endless cloud or blanket. Even after finishing the book, I still felt like I didn't know Tambudzai as a character because it seems that she is always naive and confused, and following behind in the footsteps of someone else - in this case, Nyasha. Tsitsi Dangarembga has talent, no doubt, but there is room for improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this read!!.......2003-12-16

This book by TsiTsi Dangarembga is a powerful book. You will find yourself hating and loving characters as they travel through their life in Zimbabwe. This book takes place in the 1960's were we can see the results of colonization. We see the changes that occurred among the poor people in Rhodesia and how they had to cope with changes in their culture, family life and the education, which their people lacked. We see how powerful religion was and how people can become puppets and lose sight of their culture and family values. Your emotions will pull you to pieces as you take this trip with Tambu (the main character of the book) as she struggles with her rural life and how she "awakens" as she gets older to the times that are changing around her. You see her grow not only as a child to an adolescent but you also see her grow intellectually to see how her culture is changing. You see her and her cousin Nyasha struggle with their identities as they wonder if they belong with the changing times that have educated them or with the people that they grew up with. You start to have sympathy for them as you realize they have no real place anymore. This book will show you the good things that come out of colonialism and the horrible things that can occur when you play with people's lives. This book will show you how powerful racism is and how people who don't conform are left out in the cold (literally). If you read this book I promise you will not regret it.

Book Description

Within the literature of madness, there has never been a memoir as wrenching and mordantly humorous as Jan Lars Jensen’s Nervous System. A quiet librarian who struck publishing gold with his first novel, Jensen felt as if something had come unhinged in his mind. The rush of ideas and language felt like losing, willy-nilly, a chunk of his mental stability. But true madness didn’t come until the countdown to his book’s release into the world.

A few months after selling his novel to a major American publisher, Jensen woke in a psych ward bed, only to find the ideas that had inspired him now roamed through waking nightmares that deranged him. Just as literature prompted Jensen’s slide into paranoid obsession, so did it help him rebuild and recover. Whether he was groping to comprehend James Herriot’s veterinarian stories through a haze of antipsychotic medication, deciphering his psychiatrist’s references to Patrick O’Brian novels, or attempting to steer his recalcitrant mind toward sleep with a history of logging, books and writing defined Jensen’s world.

This memoir recounts Larsen’s extraordinary experience. Terrifying yet tender, darkly humorous and deeply moving, Nervous System is a tale of literary madness like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Touching book with a humourous perspective.......2004-07-18

Highly recommended! Jensen has compiled his experiences of life in a world distored by mental illness, allowing the casual reader a window into his thoughts both as he undergoes a breakdown following publication of his first book, and his own attempts later to make sense of what happened. His humourous observations frequently lighten the deeper story that will touch the nerve of anyone affected by mental illness- either personally or through their family and friends.

3 out of 5 stars its O.K........2004-07-05

Paranoia..the reason i picked up this book was because Jensen and I had something in common - we both had Psychosis. Although many have different episodes, experiences, but some similarities - Jensen's autobiographical portrayal of himself is quite witty. The book doesnt merely explain in details how his mind gets tangled up in his first book that he published - i mean- i guess you have to buy his first book -"SHIVA 3000"...but i wouldnt, this book was enough for me.

This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A706223. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A novel instrument display designed to reduce cognitive workload and improve accuracy of flight and recovery from a disorienting episode was tested against flight with standard instruments in a UH-60 dynamic helicopter simulator. Sixteen non-UH-60 rated pilots flew a standard instrument profile and recovered from a series of unusual attitudes both with and without a secondary task. Results from all aspects of the assessment proved the benefits of the new display. Not only was there evidence of enhanced flight control, but also an improved performance on a secondary task (auditory tone identification), and reduced control input errors. Evidence from analysis of the secondary task scores showed that cognitive workload was reduced when using the novel display compared to the standard instruments. The display should be further developed to make it possible to utilize it in a head-up display or other night vision device. It should also be developed to include the capability to display hover information and an instrument landing system. Future testing should be carried out in real flight.

      Book Description

The first edition of Functional Neural Transplantation, appearing in 1994, was commissioned to provide a systematic overview of the main areas of active research into the use of neural transplantation for functional repair at that time. There have though been major developments in the field over the last decade. First, whereas many of the model systems are the same, the sophistication of the research has developed dramatically. Secondly, there has been a major change in focus related to the nature of the optimal reparative process, moving away from a primary goal involving repair by replacement of lost cells, to strategies based on halting or reversing the disease process itself. Thirdly, the last decade has (not surprisingly) seen an expansion in the breadth of clinical applications for transplantation not only of primary embryonic neural tissues but also the initial applications of cells and cell lines.

In order to address these recent developments as we enter the 21st century, 10 years after conception and 6 years after the publication of Functional Neural Transplantation, the Editors have now sought to co-ordinate and edit an updated version, Functional Neural Transplantation II.

Functional Neural Transplantation II is not just a revised edition of the previous volume, but an entirely new and complementary second volume to update the field to 'state of the art' for the new millennium. For many major topic areas (such as functional repair in neurodegenerative disorders of the basal ganglia) there has been a continual flow of significant advances. Although these topics are covered in both volumes, the Editors have sought to avoid duplication by requiring that the present coverage emphasises the major developments over the last decade while relying on the first volume for the background overviews. Other topics though are entirely new in the present volume, such as novel applications of neural transplantation to other major clinical relevance such as retinal repair or alleviation of pain. A key departure of the present volume is the addition of several early chapters addressing the technical and developmental issues associated with identification of alternative sources of cells for transplantation - cell lines, immortalised cells, precursor/stem cells and xenotransplantation.

      Book Description

Written in journal form, Annie Ernaux's account of her mother's steady decline spans a period of nearly three years. When her mother first becomes ill, Ernaux takes her in. Soon, it becomes painfully obvious that professional help is needed. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, her mother enters a nursing home, never to leave. As it explores the complexities of death and parent-child role reversal, Ernaux's latest work takes its place on the shelf beside John Bayley's Elegy for Iris and Roger Kamenetz's Terra Infirma. "As revealed by Ernaux, the details of a loved one's deterioration have such emblematic force and terror that the particular becomes universal." - The New York Times Book Review

4 out of 5 stars Gripping Perspective on Losing a Parent to Alzheimer's.......2000-06-24

Alzheimer's is a cruel disease for those who have it and even more cruel for those who know the sufferers. Everyone who knows someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's should read this book to prepare themselves for the experiences ahead. You'll need all of your strength and preparation!

The title is the last sentence the author's mother wrote before she died. One of the frightening aspects of the disease is watching the person discover the loss of faculties, as they occur. Soon, you are not recognized, and the person can lose all of their possessions. They may have to be tied down to keep them from wandering off and getting hurt. Physical deterioration is often not far behind.

The book is a series of notes the author made on occasions when she was with her mother from January 1984 through April 1986, and includes a few days after her mother's death.

You will find a lot of pain here. The author finds that she is revolted by the affliction, at how her mother changes, by the memories she has of things she should not have done, and in her own reactions to her mother's changes. As a result, there's a lot of guilt and remorse to deal with. By reading how Ms. Ernaux went through this, you may have an easier time forgiving yourself if you are subject to the same feelings in the future.

The book is filled with pretty direct stories and references to things that can be upsetting: People exposing themselves, getting sores in private places, human excretion, unpleasant smells and sights, and rough language. You will hear, see, feel, smell, and taste what the author experienced. In this area, I found the translation a little strange at times. Several crude words would be used, then a reference would be made that seemed to be employing a euphemism for a more direct word. Is the translation more or less crude than the author intended? I don't know.

The reason I did not give the book five stars is that it could really use a little more perspective than just the notes. Apparently, the experience was so painful that the author decided to let the notes speak for themselves. Perhaps in the future, Ms. Ernaux will choose to revisit this work, and put it into more context.

Is this work contrived by a fine writer, or is it simple human drama? I'm inclined to think it is the latter. Few would portray themselves and their mother this way simply to entertain readers. I could feel the searing pain as I read the entries. I think you will, too.

4 out of 5 stars Another jewel - can one expect less from Annie Ernaux?.......2000-05-07

Annie Ernaux is an author whose appeal is difficult to define - she writes autobiographical prose that is sparse, clear, honest and a bit hard. In her very particular experience, she writes prose that is emotionally universally true.

The mother we meet in "I Remain in Darkness" is a very different woman than we met in "A Woman's Place". The strong woman previously depicted descends into dependence. Written in the form of a dated journal, Ms. Ernaux traces her mother's descent into Alzheimer's - first recognizing that her mother can no longer live alone, she moves her mother in with her; this is followed by the recognition that she can no longer care for her mother; finally, her mother dies in a nursing home.

A simple and common experience. But Annie Ernaux in a slim volume captures the changing emotions that follow the changes in her mother's situation in a way few authors can.
