When you have exhausted all other insomnia cures..........2007-09-28
I struggled with insomnia for more than 10 years. I rarely got more than 3-4 hours sleep per night. I had tried all the suggested remedies -- yoga, sleeping pills (Ambien), mild anti-depressants, etc... Nothing helped. Then I decided that enough was enough. I made sure there were no physical causes for my insomnia (such as sleep apnea) and then I got to work. I found Dr. Jacobs' book at my local library. The idea of a drug-free program appealed to me. Yes, some of his ideas may sound simple but simple has worked for me. I'm not saying I sleep eight hours a night every night but my sleep has definitely improved. I feel human again! If you are ready for help and are willing to follow the book's advice, you will see improvement. If you are like most people who want a magic pill for insomnia -- you won't find it here. Once you are ready to put in some effort, give the book a try. Attitude is everything!
Say Good Night to Insomnia.......2007-07-15
The book does contain some helpful (and drug free) ideas to help with insomnia. It is a quick read but is very wordy. I think the book could have written in half as many pages.
I bought the book used, almost half priced, so I guess I got my monies worth!!
Drug-free help .......2007-07-07
In a society where drugs are often prescribed as a first step toward treatment for pretty much every ailment, this six-week therapy program aims to give the sufferer help without the use of drugs, thereby avoiding the possible side effects and dependency that drugs sometimes cause. A long-time insomnia sufferer myself, this unfortunately was the very last thing that was recommended to me after a year of doctor's visits, a very unpleasant polysomnogram, and various drug prescriptions that I reacted badly to. Having taken biofeedback therapy many years ago for migraine relief, I had already been introduced to the potential for the power of the mind over the body, and this therapy program incorporates that, and other self-help methods, to alleviate insomnia. And as a current user of this program, I can say it works. An open mind is required to make this work; skepticism and negativity will surely cause it to fail. I recommend this highly to anyone who suffers from insomnia. And as an added bonus, this program was much more affordable than even ONE of the many prescriptions I had tried. If it doesn't work for you, you have only lost a few dollars. If it does, it was priceless.
Great Book and one other recommendation.......2007-05-28
Great insights and very well written. Also, for those of you in search of an effective sleep aid, I found and bought a pretty cool system on Ebay called the `Sleep Wizard'...it's a white noise program but way batter and more varied than others I have tried before, cost me $10 and I would have spent several times that price. Here'a the link:

Everyone can benefit.......2007-05-04
Everyone sleeps and so everyone can benefit enormously from this book. It describes various processes that take place in our bodies and gives a large amount of suggestions for improving ourselves in various aspects of our bodies and minds. The book explains things both scientifically and simply, so it can be appreciated by people of all levels.
If one wanted to follow the method, there are several forms and charts to fill out in order to keep up easily. I didn't do this, I just picked up on all the little tips throughout and I think the book definitely helped me learn to deal with stress and sleep better.

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.
Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of "Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But the book's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to 5-HTP--an amino acid extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia plant--which is available without prescription and has been shown to be safer and more effective than prescription drugs in treating conditions associated with low levels of serotonin.
Our stressful modern lifestyles wreak havoc on our health--we're waging a constant battle to overcome the ill effects of poor diet, lack of exercise, and not enough rest. It may surprise you to learn that scientists have discovered that our stressful lifestyles not only affect our bodies but they adversely affect our brains, too. Specifically, stress, poor diet, and insufficient exercise cause our brains to produce low levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates our mood, appetite, and ability to get a good night's sleep. When our brains aren't producing enough serotonin, we may experience depression, suffer from obesity or insomnia, or otherwise function at less than our mental and physical peak.
How do our brains produce serotonin? By synthesizing the essential amino acids we gain from eating a proper diet. But diet alone isn't enough (or millions and millions of us wouldn't suffer the ill effects of low serotonin levels), and scientists and researchers have finally come up with a groundbreaking supplement that will safely and efficiently boost serotonin levels and reduce depression, obesity, insomnia, migraine headaches, and anxiety. That supplement is 5-HTP.
Written by one of the leading naturopathic doctors in the U.S., 5-HTP tells you everything you need to know about this amazing supplement. Citing case histories, scientific studies, and all the available literature on the subject, Dr. Murray introduces us to a supplement that has been widely and effectively used throughout Europe for decades.

AMAZING BOOK.......2007-10-02
This book is so informative. Many people are on prozac and could do this without all the side effects. It truly works!! It is a secret because it is inexpensive and not able to be patented.
MEDECINE IS FINALLY GETTING INTELLIGENT.......2007-07-30
A truly enlightening approach to human well being based on considering the true complexity of the human organism, explaining scientific issues to the level of the non specialist. THe intelligent way to deal with health problems, not just take the newest pill the Chemical companies just launched! An absolute must!
A must read.......2007-04-05
This is a very thorough and informative book on 5HTP. There's alot of info I wasn't aware of and because of it, I've begun to lose weight by following the advice in it. I'm surprised it is not touted as THE way to lose weight to give the bogus weight loss "systems" a run for their money. I like the fact that it lists studies, statistics, it's multiple uses and how it works. I didn't know it double dutied as a safe sleeping aid, for example and now use it as well for that purpose. It's too bad it gets swept under the rug for those that want to use a supplement as safe as 5HTP.
Incomplete and full of inconsistencies.......2003-08-28
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine." Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."
Another troubling oversight is that Murray's mention of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome is very brief, and is in reference only to the L-tryptophan scare of 1989. He never mentions that 5-HTP has also been linked with EMS. He also states that the manufacturing process of 5-HTP prevents any possible contamination, which simply isn't true.
I read this book hoping to find reassuring information about the safety of 5-HTP, but in light of Murray's poor research, inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it's hard to trust any of the information presented.
Don't Worry, Be Happy!.......2002-12-12
I have suffered from mild depression for years. The therapy described in the book has worked like a miracle.

Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful Suggestions.......2007-06-27
The book NO MORE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS has some very helpful suggestions and information that helped me understand what possible causes are. I would suggest it to anyone who is struggling with getting sleep.
Good sleeping plan.......2006-03-04
This is the best book I have read yet! And it works.
I have been suffering from insomnia for 9 years and done all I cound think of to cure this problem, light therapy, lavendar, room darkening, no tv, sleep clinic all the usual. 2 years ago I began sleeping pills to function during the day.
This book has been a great source for beginning to cure the problem in very practical and solid steps. I would also recommend getting the sleep timer, it gives you an objective measure of the sleep you are actually getting. I am now averaging 5 to 7 hours of sleep a night with no sleeping pills.
Excellent Book.......2005-08-17
This is an excellent book on insomnia, causes, and treatments. It covers a lot more material then another book I've read, "Say Goodnight to Insomnia", Jacobs. However, I do have one gripe with Hauri's instructions for stimulus control therapy. He says it's ok to stay in bed and read or watch TV until you get sleepy, as long as you don't have conditioned insomnia (i.e., the bed/bedroom causes you to become anxious and awake). Jacobs recommends that you don't use the bed for anything other than sleep or sex. That means no reading in bed, or watching TV in bed in order to get to sleep.
Some surprising [but effective] ideas for better sleep........2005-03-28
This is an excellent book that covers a broad range of reasons, and subsequent treatments, for insomnia. If read straight through, I imagine this book would be a bit cumbersome since it is so thorough. I found the technical information about sleep (in the introduction, but also scattered throughout various chapters where it applies) to be fascinating. But it is easy to skip to the parts that only concern you.
There are some detailed assessment quizzes, which I skipped because I had a definite idea of what was causing my insomnia (shift work, poor sleep habits, and anxiety.) But if you think there might be emotional, medical or other factors to your insomnia, the quizzes should point you in the right direction.
The advice on treatment is very interesting, not only because it seems to work, but because a lot of the ideas seem so counterintuitive (for example, if you have insomnia, spending LESS time in bed is probably a good idea. This is exactly opposite of what I was doing.) Chances are if you have insomnia, the things you are doing to help yourself sleep are probably only making it worse.
Some of the treatment ideas (particularly for improving 'sleep hygiene') might be difficult to implement at first, requiring some commitment and self-discipline, but the idea is to create a routine and good habits in the long run, so you'll be consistently getting good sleep for the rest of your life. Totally worth waking up at an hour you'd normally sleep through, or forcing yourself outside into the sunshine when you'd rather be napping.
After reading the book, for the past two nights I have actually fallen asleep within 30 minutes and slept soundly through the night. I am actually looking forward to implementing more of the treatment ideas, and I hope to kick this thing completely.
Very good book, 9 out of 10 score.......2005-01-10
"No More Sleepless Nights" is a well-written, comprehensive, easily-read book about all the possible causes for the different kinds of insomnia, with very specific ideas about how to resolve or decrease the insomnia, depending upon the variety and the cause.
The possible causes discussed include: illness, medication, habits, diet, anxiety, depression, and environment. The author has really tried to catch every angle. The book tries to avoid sleeping pills, and medication in general, whenever possible and, in the few situations where the book advises you to consult a physician about medication, the goal is "as little as possible, as brief as possible."
My one, fairly minor, gripe about the book is that, early on, the author talks as if the book was going to present a detailed, step-by-step program for addressing insomnia (i.e., insomnia --> A --> B --> C --> D --> E --> no insomnia). Instead, it is more of a shotgun approach, necessitated by the different variants of insomnia and the many possible causes. At the end, the author again portrays the program has a single, sequential entity. I am not disputing the program, as I think the book does an excellent job of explaining insomnia and methods to address it. I am just nit-picking about the author portraying it as one thing (just in the first few pages and last few pages), when it is really a more varied and complex program, as it needs to be.
* * * * *
The workbook contains most of the information from the textbook, but is redesigned to emphasize how to analyze the causes of insomnia and what to do about it. I liked this format even better than the textbook.

Customer Reviews:
JUST AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-17
I have tried several hypnosis CDs recorded by different hypnotherapists and this is by far the best because it is the only one that has worked for me. There is something about her voice that is just so soothing. It brings me to levels of relaxation that I have never ever experienced. I have to say that I am so relieved to have bought this CD. I work evenings in a SUPER busy restaurant and don't usually get home until around 12:30am. I used to have such a hard time winding down each night and wouldn't get to sleep until 7am every morning. My sleeplessness was robbing me of my life. You have no idea how torturous it is tossing and turning for hours, getting all the more stressed that you are running out of time to sleep. While listening to this tape, I would become soooo relaxed that it was as if I could hear her voice but not really HEAR it. I just have to say that though I have only been listening to it for a couple of days, I already feel a world of difference. Ms. Decker is a LIFE SAVER!!!
poor tape.......2007-08-23
this tape basically tried to teach you some relaxing techniques.
its not the right tape to make you sleep.
the sleep deeply is not the right title.
if you have been taking sleeling pills, this tape won't help,
don't be fooled and waste your money.
Unbelievable !.......2007-06-21
I have tried hypnosis in person as well as Tapes...remember those? and CD's for different things but nothing has worked like Janet's hypnosis. They say usually it takes about 30 days to rewrite a thought blueprint but I've only use it 2 times and it has worked right away. For years I've been sleeping with the help of meds and I think I found the cure.
I thought the other reviews were just Fluff but they weren't. I Highly recommend this even if you are the type that needs elephant tranquilizers to sleep. Hopefully I'll be able to ween myself off mine and just rely on the CD to relearn to fall asleep naturally. Fingers crossed. Good Luck !
If I could give this 10 stars, I would........2006-12-08
Janet's Hypnosis CD has been life-changing for me. I've suffered from insomnia for about 15 years...I'd sleep one to three hours a night and not be able to get back to sleep; It got so that I could barely function at my job, my memory was impaired and I started experiencing MS-like symptoms-weakness in legs and spine. I drank (a liter of) wine one night and slept the whole night through and since then, I've been dependent on alcohol to sleep. I tried to break this dependency several times, even trying prescription sleeping pills, but nothing else would work. I was pretty much resolved that I'd be doing this for the rest of my life. I found Janet's CD on Amazon.com and decided to order it. It's been a process, but not a long one. At first, I'd listen to it and was amazed at the deep relaxation that I was able to achieve, but I was still afraid to give up my `life-line' and go without wine for the night (I had such anxiety about not being able to perform the next day). But(!), I started noticing that, even after drinking the night before, I felt more energetic, more alert and more focused the next day. I decided one night to try not drinking and let the hypnosis do the work. The first night, I slept only a few hours, and woke up off and on, but was able to get back to sleep. The next night I slept for a whole four hour block of time, which was phenomenal for me. Each night, sleep was deeper and longer. I'm at the end of the first alcohol-free week for me and I am sleeping the whole night through. Even though, it's only been one week, I know that dependency is broken. I can't recommend this CD strongly enough.
I am sleeping again, despite the neighbors. It works. .......2006-10-05
I found this cd by accident and it changed my life. The power of suggestion is amazing. "You will hear the noise but it will not bother you.", You will wake up feeling rested and relaxed..." Now I am breathing, relaxing, sleeping, and living again. Janet has a very pleasing and soothing voice. I will probably wear out this cd. Thank you Janet.
I purchased 3 more, stress reduction, memory improvement, and confidence. All are first rate. I wish there was one for SELF HEALING. It would be a best seller in health food stores.

This book guides the clinician in how to best establish a sleep clinic to study and solve sleep disturbances of his or her patients. Residents in the rapidly growing number of sleep medicine programs will want to keep this practical, hands-on manual at their sides as they learn the tools of the trade.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, practical & easy to read.......2006-04-15
Perlis and collaborators put together a succinct and practical book on CBT for insomnia. The book is aimed for clinicians, researchers and sleep behavioral therapists. This beautiful hardcover edition begins with defining insomnia and explaining the conceptual framework of CBT treatment. Then, step by step, the author explains how to perform 8-sessions of behavioral therapy. Each concept is reinforced by a sample dialogue; it is like having a coach next to the reader. Troubleshooting frequently encountered problems such as non-adherence is also explained. Then a sample case, session by session. To finalize, the appendices have useful clinical tools. All of these qualities make this book a must for sleep medicine fellows, or clinicians interested in CBT for insomnia.

Customer Reviews:
Great, holistic answer to insomnia and other sleep problems!.......2007-03-03
Surely all of us, at one time or another, have gone a few rounds with insomnia. When you've had trouble sleeping, you drag yourself out of bed in the morning feeling all achy and exhausted, just as if you had been in the ring battling an opponent all night. In his book Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, Dr. Breus coaches you on all the effective ways to overcome insomnia - ways that many of us would never even think of! - and put it down for the count. I found his book expertly written in a conversational and friendly style with suggestions and instructions that are easy to understand and follow.
Part I of the book is called "Quick-Fix Sleep Solutions" and includes the first four chapters. You know what a bad night's sleep is, but what exactly is a good night's sleep? In chapter one, Dr. Breus explains enough about the science of sleep to give you a good foundation for understanding how and why a good night's sleep is necessary to feeling good and looking younger. Chapter two introduces you to the "Three Most Troublesome Culprits in Disordered Sleep...and How to Conquer Them." (If you guessed that caffeine is one of the three, you're right; however, the third culprit might surprise you!) The discussion in chapter three is about the people in your life - your partner, children, and business associates - and how you can manage the disruptions in sleep they may cause. Chapter four is "The Extreme (but Easy!) Bedroom Makeover" and is one of my favorite chapters. In it you learn how to make small changes in the bedroom that add up to a big difference, enabling you to improve your quality of sleep!
"Part II: From Waistlines to Face Lines: You Are What You Sleep" includes chapters five, six, and seven. Did you know that a poor night's sleep can undermine your diet, exercise, or combination weight-loss program? The first chapter in part two discusses how the body chemistry behind a good night's sleep can not only enhance your weight-loss, but acts as a "cosmetic medicine" that empowers your cells to rejuvenate and reverse the damage caused by age, stress, environment, and other factors. Chapter six talks about the important role played by quality sleep in the areas of exercise and sex, and how the right kind of sleep can not only perk up your love life, it can enhance those intimate moments with your partner. If you have ever thought that a nap in the afternoon was a good idea, chapter seven will show you how right you are, and Dr Breus explores different types of naps to help you choose the one that will deliver just the right amount of rest and energy without adversely impacting your sleep that night.
Part III launches the remarkable four-week program, "28 Nights to Sound Sleep Forever" developed by Dr. Breus. Chapter eight takes you step-by-step through the first week of his comprehensive and detailed program to improve your rejuvenating, regenerating sleep. He leads you through a series of small changes from scheduling sleep time to relaxation techniques while you keep a Sleep Diary to record your reactions. Evaluation is the keyword for chapter nine; here you will take the second week to review your Sleep Diary entries from the previous chapter so that you may evaluate the effectiveness of each change, and try some new techniques if you need to. You also receive friendly reminders that help you to stay on track. Weeks three and four of the program comprise chapter ten; here you finalize and follow your personalized sleep program by combining and practicing all the bedtime routine, relaxation, and other techniques that worked well for you.
"The Sleep Aid Industry" is the topic of Part IV of the book. Dr Breus answers a few common questions concerning sleep-aid supplements and pharmaceuticals. As a holistic practitioner myself, I especially value this information about the hazards of using medications or other "quick fix" techniques in attempting to attain quality, restful sleep. To close, The Sleep Doctor offers some excellent guidelines to follow in order to reap the benefits of a completely natural night's sleep for business and vacation travelers, and people who work evening or night shifts.
The two appendices at the end of the book include a reminder list in outline format along with Sleep Diary charts, and a list of additional resources.
I am delighted to have this book in my toolkit to recommend to stress-management clients as well as to other holistic practitioners. You can learn more about Dr. Breus and his book Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, by visiting his website www.soundsleepsolutions.com . You will find many articles about a variety of sleep problems, and you may also subscribe to his free "Sleep eNewzzzletter!" You should also visit "The Insomnia Blog" http://www.theinsomniablog.com/ where you may find not only great posts to read, but you can listen to several podcasts of Dr. Breus sharing his expertise in order to help you to overcome your sleep problems!
The best and most comprehensive guide to sleep and wellness.......2007-02-24
After more than 25 years of insomnia I've read my share of books on sleep and this is by far the best.
It provides a great guide to sleep hygiene which includes everything from choosing the best mattress, to sound proofing your room, developing good bedtime habits and understanding your own issues.
The book is full of handy quizzes that help you identify problem areas and provides comprehensive solutions for you to address these issues and get a good night's sleep. The book is full of examples and helpful tips and includes worksheets for you to record your sleep during the four week program.
If you're impatient to jump into the 4 week program you can start that immediately but I would strongly recommend reading the preceding chapters so you can eliminate problems from light, noise, pets, uncomfortable pillows and the like.
Good Night covers all the basics of getting a good night sleep, including recommendations on snacks to help you get to sleep and ideas for decorating your room to minimise distractions.
The book distinguishes between disordered sleeping and sleep disorders covering off the common sleep disorders and how they are diagnosed. The pros and cons of various remedies including sleeping pills and alternative remedies are also covered.
For anyone interested in weight loss or wanting to look younger or remove those black circles under the eyes, Good Night tells you why sleep might be interfering with your energy, appetite and appearance as well as providing guidelines to look and feel younger healthier and slimmer. What could be better?
Any sleep-deprived sufferer needs this........2006-12-11
If you're not getting a good night's sleep, and conventional ideas haven't worked, then GOOD NIGHT: THE SLEEP DOCTOR'S 4-WEEK PROGRAM TO BETTER SLEEP AND BETTER HEALTH takes the next step. It comes from a Senior VP of Clinical Operations at a sleep clinic on the cutting edge of sleep research, and offers up a survey which outlines 6 common reasons for sleep disturbance, how to fix short-term and long-term problems, and how to refine the art of napping. Any sleep-deprived sufferer needs this.

Good Practical Advice.......2006-11-16
I thought I'd heard every statistic and help tip that existed re: sleep problems and sleep hygiene -- keep your room cold and dark, wear earplugs, etc. But refreshingly, this book had a few tips I hadn't seen or heard elsewhere -- including descriptions of several yoga-like relaxation and meditation exercises to help you unwind.
I'm particularly fond of the concept of a "power down hour" where you spend a full, committed hour to unwinding before bed. Though it sounds unrealistic in the modern world, that anyone would take a full hour to do this, the cool thing is that 1/2 of this wind-down hour is meant to be devoted to doing what the author calls "mindless chores" like folding laundry. Makes a lot of sense to me, to save these chores for late night, when doing them may actually help put you to sleep!
There are a lot of tips like this in the book. Highly recommended overall.
An important self-help book.......2006-11-14
A key to functioning well in all aspects of our lives is for us to get enough sleep and, more importantly, get enough GOOD sleep. Dr. Breus helps us do just that with his honest, no-nonsense approach. His clinical insight, helpful explanations, and real-world examples make this book an important read for anyone who desires to become a better sleeper.

Deepak Chopra, M.D., eminent physician and best-selling author of
Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, explains how to fall asleep easily without trying, identify and eliminate the imbalances that cause your insomnia, and achieve a healthy balance of rest and activity in your life.
Customer Reviews:
Lot of useful information!.......2006-09-25
I sometimes have trouble sleeping . . . not so much getting to sleep, but
staying asleep . . . so when I saw RESTFUL SLEEP by Deepak Chopra,
I jumped at the opportunity to listen to the program.
Subtitled THE COMPLETE MIND/BODY PROGRAM FOR OVERCOMING
INSOMNIA, it delivered a great deal of information . . . but this was not
surprising because Chopra tends to do that with every book and/or tape
he comes out with . . . in my opinion, this was one of his best.
I particularly liked how he backed up his ideas with insights from
Ayurevda, the ancient Indian science of life.
There were many tidbits I gained from listening; among them:
* You can't force yourself to sleep.
* Trying to sleep will not help; it will actually aggravate the
insomnia.
* Turn your clock to the wall. Don't be concerned with the time.
* The solution to all sleep problems is making the period of being
awake totally dynamic and satisfying.
* Lunch should be your heaviest meal of the day.
* Supper should be light and eaten early.
* Take a short stroll after dinner.
* Avoid watching TV at night. If you must, stop by 9 p.m.
* Best to go asleep before 10 p.m., according to the rhythms of
nature.
* Rising earlier will lead to an earlier time for going to bed.
* Wake up at a regular time every day.
* Do reading in a room other than the bedroom.
* Making your bed each day creates an orderly and harmonious
impression when you go to sleep.
* Extract of lavender is considered helpful for sleep.
* Ask yourself: Do you love your job? Are you really happy?
If "yes" to both those questions, then it is likely to will avoid
most heart and other health problems.
Very helpful resource.......2000-07-15
I bought this book several years ago when I first became aware that I was having chronic problems with sleeping. I finally pulled it off my shelf about a month ago and read it. I have found it to be extremely helpful.
Chopra begins by encouraging the reader to consider the connection between waking life and sleeping life, and also the connection between our own biorythms and the rythms of nature.
He then writes about sleep and how to make it restful again rather than stressful. His style is very relaxed and easy to understand. He takes an ayurvedic (the ancient tradition of Indian medicine) approach to helping solve sleep disorders. I was not familiar with the ayurveda prior to reading this book, and really enjoyed learning a little bit about it. As a reader I did not feel that Chopra was trying to convert me, just help me. And - I feel that he did.

Book Description
Ralph Roberts hasn't been sleeping well lately. Every morning he wakes just a little bit earlier until pretty soon, he isn't sleeping at all. It wouldn't be so bad if not for the strange hallucinations--and the nightmares that keep coming to life.
Customer Reviews:
Very good novel, but a mediocre ending........2007-08-14
I read this book in like, 3 days and finished it yesterday. I really like it. Of course it is not one of Stephen King's best, but it is still very good. The main reason I give this four stars instead of five is because of the ending epilogue, "Winding The Deathwatch" in the last 30+ pages. It would have been better if it were not included. I suggest you should read until that point and draw your own conclusions. Anyways, there are way more pros than cons (there are only a few more flaws that I would like to name, but want to make this review short so I won't) in this novel and I recommend it to Stephen King fans.
P.S. If you want to read more on the Maine town of Derry, check out Stephen King's novel "IT."
Insomnia is a good thing !.......2007-08-14
Insomnia's main character, Ralph Roberts, is suffering from increasingly worse bouts of insomnia, and begins to see fantastical things which turn out to be far from imaginary. Ralph's visions end up placing him in the middle of a battle between good and evil in Stephen King's evil-tinged town of Derry, Maine. I found the concepts and characters delightful and was never bored despite the book's daunting 787-page girth. A must read for horror fans and fans of Stephen King.
Moving beyond Dark Tower..........2007-08-03
The first Stephen King book I read was the Stand, and I absolutely loved it, even though I hate horror movies and books. I liked the Stand so much I read the Dark Tower series, and I liked that too so I decided to look for some other Stephen King books. After looking through a bunch, I decided on Insomnia, as it had some tie ins to the Dark Tower series.
I am now hooked on Stephen King books. To me the great thing about Stephen King is his ability to really dig into characters, to give them depth and substance. He does this extremely well in Insomnia. As others have stated, it takes a while to get going, but I was interested in the characters and intrigued enough to stick with it, and I was well rewarded in the end. It was not incredibly scary, but more weird and intriguing. I highly recommend this book, even for the non-Stephen King fan (or especially for the non-fan).
Mediocre(2.5 stars).......2007-07-08
'Insomnia' offers a mixed bag of not really compelling characters and events, which don't quite add up to one of King's best efforts. In spite of its shortcomings, 'Insomnia' does pick up its rather sluggish/leisurely pace, and delivers a modestly exciting conclusion.
The familiar setting of Derry allows King to drop in a few references to 'Needful Things' and 'It'(though if you haven't read those, it won't hurt if you don't pick up on them).
A bigger drawback is the close connection with the 'Dark Tower' series, which may not be readily apparent to those who haven't read any of that series. Without giving it away, someone in this story goes on to play a pivotal role there, and a large part of the ending of this book is a digression which foreshadows this character in greater detail...maybe too much for uninitiated readers.
As a standalone novel, 'Insomnia' didn't have a lot going for it. Ralph and Lois do eventually make a nice couple, but they take longer to warm up to than most protagonists in King's stories.
The 'evil doctors' are kind of an underwhelming villain(though again, there's a lot of 'Dark Tower' stuff to be revealed), the 'borrowing' from Greek mythology seems a bit desperate, and the resolution of the whole clinic bombing subplot is a bit of a letdown, as if King wanted to write one of his famed 'destruction and mayhem' scenes(like the prom in 'Carrie' or the flood in 'It'), and then kind of gave up on it halfway through.)
'Insomnia' tries a bit too hard to juxtapose King's 'fantasy' side with some 'heavy contemporary issues'(abortion, in this case). While there is some merit to the one-sided portrayal of some of the characters, the truth is, neither the abortion subplot nor the fantasy aspects are fleshed out quite as well as one might expect from King.(Perhaps lack of sleep affected his writer's muse!)
Readers of King's previous work may be torn here. A qualified recommendation: For King completists, or hard-core fans of either 'Dark Tower' or the town of Derry. Those who prefer King's horror instead of fantasy, or who'd rather read his better-developed character studies, can skip this one...without losing sleep over it!
Another winner by the master of Horror.......2007-05-06
Terrific S. King book. Once you start it, you can't put it down. Great price through Amazon.

Book Description
For two hundred years a noble Venetian family has suffered from an inherited disease that strikes their members in middle age, stealing their sleep, eating holes in their brains, and ending their lives in a matter of months. In Papua New Guinea, a primitive tribe is nearly obliterated by a sickness whose chief symptom is uncontrollable laughter. Across Europe, millions of sheep rub their fleeces raw before collapsing. In England, cows attack their owners in the milking parlors, while in the American West, thousands of deer starve to death in fields full of grass.
What these strange conditions–including fatal familial insomnia, kuru, scrapie, and mad cow disease–share is their cause: prions. Prions are ordinary proteins that sometimes go wrong, resulting in neurological illnesses that are always fatal. Even more mysterious and frightening, prions are almost impossible to destroy because they are not alive and have no DNA–and the diseases they bring are now spreading around the world.
In The Family That Couldn’t Sleep, essayist and journalist D. T. Max tells the spellbinding story of the prion’s hidden past and deadly future. Through exclusive interviews and original archival research, Max explains this story’s connection to human greed and ambition–from the Prussian chemist Justus von Liebig, who made cattle meatier by feeding them the flesh of other cows, to New Guinean natives whose custom of eating the brains of the dead nearly wiped them out. The biologists who have investigated these afflictions are just as extraordinary–for example, Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, a self-described
“pedagogic pedophiliac pediatrician” who cracked kuru and won the Nobel Prize, and another Nobel winner, Stanley Prusiner, a driven, feared self-promoter who identified the key protein that revolutionized prion study.
With remarkable precision, grace, and sympathy, Max–who himself suffers from an inherited neurological illness–explores maladies that have tormented humanity for centuries and gives reason to hope that someday cures will be found. And he eloquently demonstrates that in our relationship to nature and these ailments, we have been our own worst enemy.
Advance praise
“The Family that Couldn’t Sleep is a riveting detective story that plumbs one of the deepest mysteries of biology. The story takes the reader from the torments of an Italian family cursed with sleeplessness to the mad cows of England (and, now, America), following an unlikely trail of misfolded proteins. D. T. Max unfolds his absorbing narrative with rare grace and makes the science sing.” –Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and The Botany of Desire
“Much has been written about prions and Mad Cow Disease–nearly all of it is worthless. Thankfully, from the world of journalism comes D.T. Max to set things right. Throw all those other “Mad Cow” books in the trash: This is the book to read about prions–or whatever you want to call them. It’s a riveting tale, told by someone with a very special understanding, derived in part from his own strange ailment. Find a cozy spot, clear your schedule and dive in.”
– Laurie Garrett, author of Betrayal of Trust and The Coming Plague
“D. T. Max deftly unfolds the mysterious prion in all its villainous guises. Although scientists do not fully understand these proteins–how they replicate and wreak such havoc in their victims’ brains–The Family That Couldn’t Sleep reveals their historical, cultural, and scientific place in our world. Prepare to be enlightened, entertained, and frightened.”
–Katrina Firlik, MD, author of Another Day in the Frontal Lobe
“A great book.
D.T. Max has drawn the curtain on a cabinet of folly
and malady that will stagger your imagination.”
– Philip Weiss, author of American Taboo
“D.T. Max has combined the enthralling medical anthropology of Oliver Sacks with the gothic horror of Stephen King to produce a medical detective story that is as intelligent as it is spooky. The villain of The Family That Couldn’t Sleep is the prion, a tiny little protein that causes some of the most terrifying, brain-mangling, creepy diseases known to man. Always fascinating–how could it not be, given that its characters include cannibals, mad cows, madder sheep, a Nobel prize-winning pedophile, and, most poignantly, an Italian family cursed by fatal insomnia?–Max’s book is also a gripping account of scientific discovery, and a heartfelt meditation on what it means to be cursed with an incurable, and brutal, illness.” – David Plotz, author of The Genius Factory

LOVED IT !!!!!.......2007-08-10
FASCINATING, A GREAT READ. I LOVE NONFICTION BOOKS AND I LOVE TO LEARN ABOUT NEW THINGS AND THIS WAS A PERFECT READ. A GREAT MEDICAL MYSTERY AND I HOPE HE GETS TO RIGHT A SEQUEL IF NEW DISCOVERIES ARE EVER MADE
extremely well written.......2007-06-03
must be for just being such a written interesting book. some of the disease related book are boring. but this one is definitely not! Mr max, for your condition, in japan they have invented a plastic (i saw that on TV from a program called best 3 ) which they made a gidget into a gear which with minimum force you can lift a a lot of things. remember the gear logan in "dark angel" have? the same stuff.
From a nurse scientist's perspective.......2007-05-06
The Family That Couldn't Sleep: A Medical Mystery has an agenda. You find this "up front" from the author's admission. However, the agenda is a worthy one to raise consciousness about rare genetic disorders that don't have the government's or pharmaceutical companies' attention because their financial and epidemiological impacts are so low. The book also brings into focus how families will deny the presence of a genetic disease or feel it is punishment for untold sins.
I read the book because it offered information about prion disease (prions are the culprits that cause mad cow disease and some other specific degenerative nervous system diseases). Finding evidence that prion disease can not only be transmitted by eating flesh of an infected animal, but also genetically transmitted was new information to me. This book will hold the attention of laypersons as well as those acquainted with the scientific aspects of genetics and neurodegenerative diseases. References and websites are presented so readers can follow up and interpret the scientific findings themselves if they like.
Worth a read.......2007-02-26
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The title is a bit of marketing, I think, since very little of the book talks about FFI, the sleep-robbing disease affecting Italian (and a few American) families. That said, the book is written well enough that I didn't mind the small bait-and-switch, as the author spends the majority of the book talking about mad cow disease and more obscure neurological diseases sharing a similar underlying cause: replicating proteins. One of the most interesting aspects of the book for me was the idea that the discoveries described are happening right now; this isn't a historical work. Except for a speculative short section claiming that humans were originally cannibalistic, the book seemed well researched and well thought out, and it moves quickly.
very interesting.......2007-02-16
LOvely way to introduce us to a scientific and controversial issue. The book is a pleasure to read and the author makes a very good job at conveying the importance of the subject in an understandable novel. Through a family story we discover the world of prions and the tragic diseases caused by the human manipulation of nature.

So bad I couldn't finish it.......2007-06-08
I purchased this book after reading the great reviews. It is wordy, poorly written, and gives the impression the author is just making up sleep advice. The medical credentials of the author and the souces are suspect as well (the author lists GCFP after his name...what is that?). If you think yoga may help you relax then this may be for you. If you are looking for a better written book from a scientific rather than spiritual perspective I would recommend "The Insomnia Answer".
Sleep at long last.......2007-01-09
I first came across this book at 3 am on another insomnia night and was impatient for a solution. I didn't want any more pills that made me feel drugged the next day. I didn't want any more useless sleep hygiene advice, which worked intermittently. I also didn't want to pay $2,000 for a sleep study that would tell me I needed more pills and better sleep hygiene! Having suffered from insomnia for eight years, I was ready for a real solution.
Two things caught my eye about this book. One, a large percentage of the reviewers were medical professionals who used the method in their practices. Two, the book suggested an approach that would actually relax the body and calm the mind, not drug it or try to control everything around it and hope it behaves. This was what I was looking for!
After trying the methods, I can confirm that they work spectacularly; however, I do have a word of caution on the methods. Follow the steps in the book as exactly as possible, and don't go on memory alone when first doing them. Doing them incorrectly--even slightly so--can give you poor results.
amazing.......2006-05-19
This book is incredible! I was beginning to think that sleeping poorly was a result of getting older(I am in my 30s). Now I know that you can learn to be a good sleeper just like you learn other things! Read it and enjoy.
Rescue remedy for sleep.......2006-02-13
These wonderful tecniques in the book were invaluable these last couple of weeks. My youngest son has been very ill with a virus that completely disturbed his sleeping. We thought it would change, but didn't, so I taught him some of the Mini-moves in the book and he was able to relax and finally get the much needed rest he needed for healing.
Excellent.......2006-01-09
As a very tired single mother of two, I have been using this method for a few years. It changed my relationship with sleep. Recently my 8 year old had a very painful infection and was unable to sleep. I did some of the techniques with her as she tried to relax. It worked! We both got a decent nights sleep.
Thank you.
