The third novel from one America's most powerful writers turns 20 years old in 1997, but Song of Solomon long ago ascended to the top shelf in the ranks of great literature. This Everyman's Library hardcover edition of the Nobel Prize-winning Morrison's lyrical, powerful, and erudite novel contains a chronology that situates the book in its historical context, and an introduction from author Reynolds Price.

Book Description

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. With this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison transfigures the coming-of-age story as audaciously as Saul Bellow or Gabriel García Márquez. As she follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, Morrison introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized black world.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-08-03

This is a book you probably had to read in high school. You'll love now you're all grown up!
This novel is one of the best I've ever read about the search for identity. Ms. Morrison serves up the richest of emotional stews: histories and aspirations of African Americans, Native Americans, the rich, poor, the loved and those seeking love. This book is truly a song!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-11

This is one of my favorite books. I recommend that people read this before tackling any other Toni Morrison novels. I like this book better than her other novels because I could understand it more. I feel as if there is less symbolism here than in her other work. She is not as flowery here and uses more "plain everyday language." Overall, a great book. It is a good purchase for a home library.

4 out of 5 stars A rich, full novel.......2007-01-29

Toni Morrison were letting the youth know about, people with amazing collection of losers and fighters, innocents and murders, followers of ghosts and followers of money, all of whom add to the pleasure of this exceptionally diverse novel. When Toni was a little girl she was raised in a bad neiborhood. Toni was scared to come out side the house because of the dangerous surroundings around here. Toni had a miserable life. She listened to stories from her friends about them getting raped and abused by their parents. She was very scared of her father as a young child.
I like this book because it's a good example about a freighting childhood inside of a bad neiborhood. I was raised in a bad nationhood but I wasn't scared of nothing I was very brave. She teaches our youth today to watch your surroundings. If you read this boot you would be like what a child life. You would never want to put your feet in her shoes.

3 out of 5 stars I'm probably missing something........2006-12-10

Every time I read a novel by Toni Morrison, I feel like I must be missing something. I am able to take a step back and appreciate the beauty of her writing. Sentence by sentence, she puts together wonderful phrases that create stunning imagery. She is, without a doubt, a great writer.

However, I feel like her stories are supposed to have deeper meaning than I'm finding. I think I'm probably missing an underlying message somewhere, but I'm not sure how to analyze her books in order to get at this message.

I liked this book better than others of hers I've read; some have been too depressing for words and this one, although it had its moments, also had some redeeming characters and hopeful attitudes.

Milkman is a man whose adulthood is shaped by his childhood as the son of a dependent mother and a cold father, the much younger brother of two dissatisfied sisters. His father is obsessed with acquiring things as status symbols, and his mother is obsessed with the memory of her father, a prestigious doctor whom her husband is never able to measure up to.

Mostly because it is forbidden, Milkman begins spending time with his eccentric aunt, who lives with her daughter and granddaughter across town. Soon he starts up a relationship with the granddaughter, his cousin, but breaks it off when he tires of it, never considering his cousin's feelings.

Partly because of his cousin's murderous response to their breakup, partly as a quest for family treasure and partly because he is simply feeling smothered by his life, Milkman sets off on a journey to trace his family's roots. What he discovers about the past and about himself surprises him.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely entrancing...EVERY time I read it........2006-10-07

Toni Morrison has never disappointed. This is a deep, rich experience. Ms. Morrison writes in beautifully overlapping, intertwining layers and vines, like a French braid from head to floor, the strands only coming together inches above the plush carpeting. It is not possible to completely crack and embrace this gem encrusted geode in one read. About every ten years I discover something new to appreciate when I treat myself to another swim in Song of Solomon.

5 out of 5 stars And yet another. . ........2005-04-14

. . .addition to an outstanding series! This series provides a desperately needed resource for the serious Catholic Scripture student.

Now that the Navarre Bible New Testament project has been completed, the editors have turned their attention to the Old Testament. This volume "Psalms & Song of Solomon" is the fourth result of that effort, following up on the well-received "Chronicles to Macabees".

This volume is interesting because of the editorial choice to include the Song of Solomon with the translation of the Psalms. It is my hope that those (many) persons who are familiar with the Psalms but NOT the Song of Solomon will take the opportunity to explore this very interesting book of the Bible

The primary text is the Catholic version of the widely regarded "Revised Standard Version". Included as well is the New Latin Vulgate. Sandwiched between is excellent expository verse-by-verse commentary on the Scripture text. The commentary is taken from a conservative, tradition, yet scholarly Catholic perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Song - it is not only a love story, but INSTRUCTIONS !.......2007-09-04

This book goes line by line explaining the whole chapter. I loved it.... Now I understand - it is not only a love story, but instructions - exact instructions - on how you are to treat each other in marriage... it is an exact example on how to date, select a mate, wedding vows and promises, marriage, make love, conflict resolution, it has it all ! I have read so many books on how to make a marriage work... how to argue fair, be loving, be respectful, how to EVERYTHING, but this one is straight from the BIBLE... can't get any better than that !

The very best wedding present !

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any one.......2006-02-25

This book was a great book in that the author was right on target. I learned alot about marriage and now my husband is reading the book. We have both agreed that our three daughters will read the dating and courtship sections before they are allowed to date. Then as they approach maturity and marriage, they will read the rest. The conflict resolution chapters for marriage gave great insight on how men and women think and how to approach a problem and resolve it. It is rare to come across a book on romance that is so biblically founded and so on target. I highly recommend it for everyone!!!

3 out of 5 stars Bold Title.......2005-11-02

This book's title is "The Book of Romance: What Solomon Says About Love, Sex, and Intimacy"... from the way it is written, a better title might have been "The Book of Romance: What Tommy Nelson Says About Love, Sex, and Intimacy."

While refering to the Song of Solomon in each chapter, most chapters are his own musings on the topics of love, sex, and intimacy. It is of course quite alright from him to write from his own personal experience on these topics, but when the book as presented as what Solomon and his experience can teach us about love, that's where I check out.

Nevertheless, the book does present insight/knowledge that has and will be useful for many, but don't think that what he says will necessarily flow directly from scripture.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Sexuality.......2005-08-22

Tommy Nelson does a great job of dispelling the myth that sensuality is not for us Christians. A really fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-06-11

This book gives direct how-tos about what should be expected in Godly relationships. It draws the line between dating and courting and takes the guess work out of what should be expected in both.
This is a must read for singles and a should read for those who are married or getting married and want more insight into how to treat their spouse.

5 out of 5 stars read it for the Song of Songs commentary alone.......2005-12-06

For centuries, rabbinic and Christian interpreters of the mysterious poem, Song of Songs, have argued over whether the dialogue is a mystical conversation between Israel/the believer and God on the one hand, or an erotic exchange between two human lovers on the other. Ellen Davis brilliantly and beautifully cuts through this false divide by showing how the Song is both these and more: a three-level presentation of the restored relationships between the people of God (Israel) and their lover (God); between human men and women (healing the rift from the Garden of Eden) and between Israel and the Land. With Davis' commentary, readers will suddenly experience the depth of this classic poem opened up with the spaciousness of the vast plains and the intimacy of the marital bed.

A rare commentary that combines scholarly precision with faith-filled sensitivity to the importance and power of the biblical Word. Not only that, it's very readable by ordinary, literate people, not just scholars or pastors.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Religious Reading of the Text.......2005-02-19

Ellen Davis is one of those rare scholars who is willing to go outside the mainstream to provide new and tantalizing interpretation of the Bible. Thinking particularly of her work on the Song of Songs, she gives a sensitive analysis that explores the religious metaphors of the Book. Rather than thinking of the Song as the least biblical of the Bible books, she argues that it is the most biblical of books. For example, the verse,"your nose is the tower of Lebanon" makes sense once you grasp that Lebanon is an exchange word for Jerusalem...since the temple of Solomon was built primarily from Lebanon wood.
Unfortunately, some modern scholars refuse to even consider a religious reading of the Song...as if the great church and rabbinical thinkers were fools.

Ellen Davis is correct that the rich imagery is closely linked INTERTEXTUALLY with other works of scripture. (Put another way, the Song of Solomon is written in the language of the Bible...not just Hebrew but in the language of the Bible). Once that point is understood, the Song becomes much more exciting to listen to. Hands down, this is one of the best books
on the subject. Indeed, the author is the preeminent scholar on the ecological/spiritual aspects of the Song. Highly recommended.

    Product Description

God created his children as sexual opposites, and designed marriage to be the context of erotic pleasure. While the church has been mostly silent on the subject of sex, the world and the devil have attempted to make it their domain. The church has rightly proclaimed biblical prohibitions on the misuse of sex, but it has failed to speak out on the godliness of erotic pleasure in the context of marriage. Out of 66 books composing the Bible, one whole book is dedicated to promoting erotic pleasure - Song of Solomon. Michael Pearl takes his readers through a refreshing journey of Biblical texts. This sanctifying look at the most powerful passion God ever created will free the reader from false guilt and inhibition.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poorly prepared, written..........2007-08-14

This isn't so much a 'bad' book as it is inferior to several other excellent books by authors with far better backgrounds in scriptural study and relationship counseling. Pearl's examination of the Song of Solomon is generally accurate as far as it goes, but his ability to "mine" for insight is weak. If you are looking for a book that will enrich your relationship, I recommend "Love Life" by Ed Wheat, or "The Book of Romance: What Solomon Says About Love, Sex and Intimacy" by Tommy Nelson. Both authors, especially Nelson, offer a much more qualified and far more insightful view of the Song of Solomon.
When not discussing the S.o.S., Pearl loses ground even further; he apparently has only his personal marriage experience to draw on. Also, frankly, many of his comments are crude, and some of his translations of other scriptures are patently false. Beyond that, Pearl offers his own opinion as a statement of moral truth several times in the novel, with no scriptural backing. He's just not that talented of an author.

4 out of 5 stars Great insight into how God views sex!.......2007-07-25

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book and it opened our eyes to see the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Holy Sex.......2007-03-03

We have been changed by the biblical concepts in this book. For far too long the enemies of The Bible have taught that sex was forbidden fruit. This small book takes the opposite view. The truth that we have learned is that the very best sexual experience is reserved for those who need not be ashamed. It is my heartfelt desire that everyone find the joy that my wife and I have found.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and Honest.......2006-08-21

I enjoyed the openness with which Michael Pearl approached this subject. The verse-by-verse analysis of the Song of Solomon was very refreshing and eye-opening. This is a valuable resource for those who may be hesitant to open up to their spouses because of past sexual encounters and/or abuses. Christians need to be reminded that they can have a healthy, passionate sexual relationship with their spouse because God created them for each other.

A practical wedding gift that will far outlive the blender!

    HIGHLIGHTED CONTENTS:

    The Betrothal
    Seeking His Countenance
    Reflecting His Beauty
    The Perfection of the Bridegroom
    The Final Union

The greatest love story ever written, the Song of Songs describes the emotional, unfolding story of the Bridegroom and His bride. Jeanne Guyon shows how the song of a young maiden, fervently in love with her suitor, becomes a powerful allegory of every believer's relationship with Christ in the Song of Songs. Without any embarrassment for King Solomon's intimate portrayal of the lovers, she explores:

    * The greatness of God's love
    * How trials can become blessings
    * True surrender to God's will in your life
    * Finding God's favor in your life
    * Learning to rest in His presence

After writing this commentary, Jeanne Guyon was sent to the infamous Bastille prison for presuming to know the almighty God in an intimate way. Let that same holy "presumption" draw you to His heart as you read this book.

    5 out of 5 stars At Last.......2007-07-09

Someone has finally written a commentary from the text, not from preconceived ideas of "religious" individuals who presume to know the mind of God. If anything, the author is overly cautious in stating what he sees in the text.

    Refreshing!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for preaching, teaching and personal study!!!.......2007-01-05

Hess' work will revolutionize one's understanding of this seemingly nebulous book of Hebrew poetry. It makes an excellent undergraduate textbook and can be read from cover to cover like an ordinary book. All of the Hebrew vocabulary is transliterated, making it accessible for those unfamiliar with the language. After a brief, but informative discussion of the history of Song of Songs interpretation, Hess begins a verse-by-verse discussion of the entire poem. He divides his commentary into seven chapters, the first of which discusses the book's introduction. The remaining six chapters deal with the individual sections of the poem. Each section unfolds the linguistic meaning of the text and its poetic imagery along with its underlying cultural/ Ancient Near Eastern background. Hess concludes each of the six sections with a discussion of its theological implications for Christians today. He adeptly demonstrates how Hebrew word usage in other parts of the Old Testament informs the usage of those same Hebrew words in the Song of Songs. He gently dismisses allegorical interpretations of the poetic imagery and instead views the poem as a celebration of love as it is fully expressed within the covenant of marriage. His insights regarding the contemporary relevance of Song of Songs for Christians, particularly in the theological sections, are superb! They provide excellent guidance both for preaching and for teaching the book's message. Pastors and teachers could easily craft an excellent series of six sermons (one for each of the major sections) for a marriage seminar using Hess' commentary, which successfully dispels the myth that Song of Songs is inappropriate for public teaching and preaching. He advocates a high view of the marriage covenant and the fulfillment/enjoyment/impact of love (and its various expressions) within that relationship as a gift intended to honor God who gave it. He emphasizes how love's full expression within the marriage covenant is a picture of Christ's love for the Church without attempting to overspiritualize or allegorize every symbol (a tactic that some overly sanctimonious interpreters of this book have tried to do throughout the history of its interpretation). This commentary not only helps readers gain a better understanding of the book's intended meaning, but also of its place within the canon of Scripture. It is a welcome corrective for a Church that is being increasingly ravaged from within by sexual promiscuity, adultery and divorce. Highly recommended for pastors, teachers and laypeople!!!

4 out of 5 stars Balanced Biblical Study.......2005-05-19

In light of the dozens of scholarly commentaries on the Song of
Song, the work by Professor Hess is concise and careful. He provides excellent footnotes supporting his interpretive
strategies as well as the most balanced summary of the interpretation and dating questions of this book of the Bible.
The strength of the book is that it recognizes theological as well as literal approaches as equally valid. For a student who wishes to read a solid introduction to the Song of Songs, I
    recommend this volume

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough and Well written commentary.......2004-11-10

This treatment of the Song of Songs is valuable for all readers. The book is thorough in exploring the Song and very well-written. It is technical when it needs to be, yet is highly readable due to excellent explanations. It refers to the Hebrew text when necessary, but provides the untrained reader with enough of an explanation to be understandable. Mr. Longman takes the approach that the Songis an anthology of love poetry. But he moves beyond the secular to deomonstrating clearly how the Song fits into the canon for Jews and Christians. The book is appropriately reverent while celebrating the God-given human love expressed so beautifully in the Song. People of faith will find the book valuable and others will find the scholarship excellent. If you want a highly readable commentary, with superior scholarship and an elucidating exploration of this bible book, this commentary will not let you down.

Ariel and Chana Bloch's new translation of the Song of Songs--the most sexually explicit and sensually rich book of the Bible--is pure delight from beginning to end. Its introduction is an accessible, sophisticated, entertaining, and comprehensive orientation to the literary and religious history of the Song of Songs. The Blochs say the speakers in this poem "don't suffer love, they savor it." Their translation, overflowing with full--almost to the point of florid--feeling ("Feast, friends, and drink / till you are drunk with love!"), arrives at a time when many Jews and Christians are opening themselves to the religious dimensions of sexuality and human love. Song of Songs has a great deal to teach us; this translation is sure to attract many eager students. --Michael Joseph Gross

    Book Description

“Next to Genesis, no book in the Hebrew Bible has had a stronger influence on Western literature than the Song of Songs.”
–The New York Review of Books

One of the greatest love poems ever written, The Song of Songs celebrates the sexual awakening of a young woman and her lover and the intoxicating experience of falling in love. Composed more than two thousand years ago, this book of the Old Testament is not only an essential religious and literary text, but also a source of inspiration to modern-day poets and lovers. Enhanced by an Afterword by the esteemed scholar Robert Alter and a new Foreword from the noted translator Stephen Mitchell, this definitive volume showcases Chana Bloch and Ariel Bloch’s sensuous translation which has “a lyrical purity that is delightful” (W. S. Merwin).

    5 out of 5 stars Profoundly Sensual.......2007-01-21

How wonderful you are, O Love,
    how much sweeter
    than all other pleasures!

But to try to quote from the Song is like hunting for a rabbit's foot. Or trying to cook only a spoonful of soup. The lovers are stoked with the such desperate passion, that no matter the circumstance, the politic, or the law, they bestow on themselves and, now, thanks to the translation, on us, a profound innocence. In that split moment before tears begin to well. Before pain is translated into reaction. Or desire hits the brain. No wonder the Song flaunts such a pure animal presence. The lovers living between the heartbeats. I can see the Shulamite stealthing around the city at night. Silent, almost rolling, footsteps. The lovers collision always in the softlight of dawn. The air cold.

    Hurry, my love! Run away,
    my gazelle, my wild stag
    on the hills of cinnamon.

4 out of 5 stars Good Modern Version to Complete Older Ones.......2004-11-30

I enjoyed the evocative language. I thought the authors did a good job of organizing the speech and assigning words to the most probable speakers...only in one or two places did I prefer the KJV arrangements. The commentary was very informative, although I respectfully disagree on a few points, as I tend to a more conservative Christian approach to the text. My view is that, while obviously singing the praises of human sexuality, you cannot avoid some sort of allegorical/symbolic approach to this book. While the Bible is not anti-sexuality, nor would it ideologically be against healthy portraits of sexuality in righteous contexts, the book's presence in the canon of Scripture demands us to look for a prophetical meaning in the text. The Jews have seen it as an allegory of God's love for Israel. The Church has seen it as an allegory of Christ's love for the Church. Understood rightly, it is BOTH! The Shulamite is Israel, yes, but Israel was divided between the northern kingdom and the south. The norther kingdom of Ephraim eventually was lost and assimilated to the gentile world. I can't help but see the way in which the Shulamite is described as being a portrait of Ephraim. It is as if Solomon represents the greater son of David, the Messiah, who goes out among the nations and falls in love with Ephraim of old and brings her back. It is my view that Ephraim today is represented in the gentiles who have become Christians. Consider that most of the spices used to describe her are foreign imports, and many of the geographical places used to describe her are in the north. She is dark and lovely, like the tents of Kedar. She is foreign and exotic, like a mare in Pharoahs chariots. She is contrasted with the daughters of Jerusalem, who would be the southern kingdom who stayed faithful to the house of David.

    3 out of 5 stars DELICIOUSLY DISSAPOINTING.........2002-07-28

In all honesty i had high hopes for this book,i was mildly disapointerd at the lack of real vision.Though true to its calling (NEW TRANSLATION)it doesnt go beyond updating the song into the language of the day.I did however like the fact that they used hebrew lettering on the opposite page of the english trans, verse by verse.I would recomend this book to one who wants to speculate, disect, and tinker with the greatest love poem ever.Could have had more pictures/illustrations for readers to visualize this visualy intensive poem.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Translation, Thin Volume.......2001-12-30

The Blochs' translation is concise, elegant, and strikes the right balance between contemporary explicitness and classical reserve. Some of the textual choices are debatable, and the translation often departs from literalness, sometimes omitting entire lines -- but the overall result is fresh and exciting; this nuanced rendition really brings the Song to life.

One thing to be aware of is that, other than the poem itself, a brief introduction, and some brief remarks by Robert Alter, the text consists mostly of very detailed translators' notes analyzing the verses line by line, even word by word. This material will be of interest to scholars of ancient Hebrew but perhaps not to the general reader. I read the book (sans notes) in about forty minutes -- and I have to wonder if I should have paid [amt] for the privelege. Nothing against the Blochs or their fine work, but I would have preferred more supporting material of more general interest.

5 out of 5 stars Love is human and divine, both.......2001-11-10

This book of the Old Testament is first of all a beautiful poem. The subject is love, love for a woman and love for a man. It is the love song of two lovers.

It is never erotic or pornographic, but always poetic. That is probably why it was used over and over again by composers in vespers dedicated to the Holy Virgin, particularly the first poem : « I am black but lovely, daughters of Jerusalem » with the famous songs « Nigra sum » and « Pulchra es ».

This book has always been considered by the Catholics as an emanation of King Solomon and as prophecy about the coming of Jesus, about the Holy Virgin.

It is of course possible to see a metaphor in that lovesong, the Bride being Israel, the people of God, who have neglected their vineyard and were punished for it, who have sinned and are now repenting after the fair punishment. Then the Bridegroom is God himself.

But what remains - above and after all - is the marvellous poetic language to describe love and the loved ones. It is probably the Book that demonstrates best the fact that the Bible is speaking of real men and women and not of unreal, virtual ones. They believe in God, which gives them a higher vision and deeper meaning, but they remain human with their attachment to love, justice and peace, the three main virtues Jesus will bring us in the New Testament.

    Book Description

Daniel Akin does not write in a vacuum. Having lead over 300 marriage seminars across the United States, he is in touch with contemporary distorted perceptions of sex. But the Bible is not silent on this subject. As a matter of fact it has much to say. As the creator of sex, God knows and has imparted the knowledge of the conditions for sex at its best. Daniel Akin sets the many and varied misconceptions about sex alongside God's design to reveal His intention and blessing for this vital dimension of life.

5 out of 5 stars God on Sex.......2005-07-19

As a Sunday School teacher trying to teach young married couples what the Bible has to say about sex, this book has made it much easier. It takes the Song of Solomon and brakes it down into a teaching outline for you with great commentary and examples on the verses.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book That is Easy To Read and Easy To Apply.......2005-04-22

Wow. This is the best book that I have ever read on the subject of marital intimacy. It covers everything. It is not a trashy or preachy book, it simply shares God's ideas on what marriage and intimacy should be like between husbands and wives. The book is based on the Song of Solomon, which is a book in the bible. The chapter headings are:
    1. How to Begin a Love Story.
    2. The Power of Praising your Partner.
    3. How to Fan the Flames of Love.
    4. Man are from Earth, and Women are From Earth...Deal with It!
