Book Description
No more counting carbs, calories, or fat grams! This revolutionary diet plan works with your hormones to curb your appetite, boost your metabolism, and take the pounds off for good!
Cutting-edge research shows that losing weight is not about carbs, calories, or even willpower—it’s about a hormone called leptin, and how it functions in your body. Leptin is your body’s natural weight-loss mechanism: it curbs your appetite, jump-starts your metabolism, and when working properly makes you literally fat resistant—you will lose weight effortlessly and efficiently and never gain those pounds back.
If you’re struggling to lose weight, chances are you are “leptin resistant”—your body no longer responds to leptin, making it impossible for you to slim down. The Fat Resistance Diet is the first and only eating plan designed specifically to combat leptin resistance and reprogram your body to start melting away the pounds. Using a breakthrough combination of anti-inflammatory and hormone-balancing foods, the three-phase regimen delivers:
A loss of six to ten pounds in the first two weeks.
A loss of at least two pounds a week thereafter.
Fun, flavorful meals that make sticking with the plan a breeze.
An easy maintenance program that keeps you fat resistant for life.
With over 100 delicious recipes designed for maximum satisfaction and eating pleasure, the Fat Resistance Diet is the only diet you’ll ever need—a brand new way to eat that will transform your body into a lean, fat-fighting machine.

This Works.......2007-09-26
After a lifetime of diets,my search stops here.Well done book which really allows you to change your lifestyle and realize that what you do eat is more important than what you do not eat. This did not start as a weightloss plan, maybe that's why it's so good. I strongly recommend this book.
Easy Read.......2007-09-19
This book is an easy read with a lot of useful information. There are a lot of good points for living a healthier lifestyle and it isn't just about eliminating food.
A real feel better book.......2007-09-11
This book is filled with information on making your body feel better and lose weight . . . An easy read . . . I'm just getting started and already feel better.
hmmm.......2007-08-31
I have read just about every diet/nutrition book out there. This is the first one that actually had some new information that I was not previously aware of. The concept is great, but the diet is so rigid it would be very hard to actually follow the food choices - oh wait, there are no choices! That is right, no substutions at all. It is interesting to read though.
I've lost 16 lbs. so far. It works........2007-08-15
I've lost 16 lbs. so far. If you could get an appointment with a famous Harvard-trained doctor who had a phenomenal record of success in helping anyone lose weight--based on all the latest research. And if it would cost you less than $25--and you would be guarantied to lose weight and stay thin for the rest of your life. Would you take the appointment? If yes, buy this book and follow the advice. I did and you can track my progress below. I eat only the recommended foods and enjoy them very much. And I am so happy not to be starving, or filling my body with "heaven-know's-what's-in-these?" pills, herbal concoctions, or shakes--which, when I stop buying them, I know I'm going to have the same weight problem in 6 months. This is a way of eating that can last you your whole life long. If you are familiar with "SuperFoods", then those same (natural) foods are what you'll be eating in this eating plan...with some very interesting additions. If you don't mind eating healthy foods that have been around since almost the beginning of time--and ignoring every food that was "invented" in the 20th century and that has a catchy name (Tostitos!)--then try this and follow it exactly for one month and watch the weight loss occur. You will never look back. If by chance it doesn't work for you, then it likely means you need to attend to the psychological or physical stressors that hammering your body/life and preventing your body from working as it is designed to. If so, I sincerely recommend looking into EFT as the best way to deal with that. This will be my last post, until I hit my weight loss goal of 30 lbs. which should come in early December, I'm guessing. The comments I've posted since I began eating this way are below.
40 days 16 lbs lost. This is effortless. I am never hungry because I eat whenever I feel like it.
30 days 13 lbs. lost...this has included two vacations where I weathered lots of meals where I was forced to make hard food choices that would have crushed me with any other way of eating. With this method of eating I had no problems at all. In fact, I lost 3 lbs. on my last vacation. This is the real deal--finally a way of eating that focuses on good foods that requires zero calorie counting--and does what it is supposed to do--lose weight--even for a 50 something person with a slow metabolism.
15 days 8 lbs. lost
14 days in and I've lost 7 lbs. and my body is clearly in weight loss mode. I still love the food choices. I would have lost more, I think, but I spent 5 days at a resort that had an incredible desert buffet and I couldn't help myself from tasting. I otherwise ate the foods recommended at the resort and didn't gain any weight! Interestingly, I've stopped eating nearly as much food--stop at one serving at dinner, where I always had two. Also, I crave all the foods that I'm eating and have lost my cravings for any foods (cheese, sweets) that used to be my downfall. Everything that the book says would happen is happening.
6 days into the diet and have lost 4 pounds. I love it because it's a simple list of approved foods. Haven't been hungry and have had more energy...which has turned my normal 4 mile walks (which never helped me lose weight) into 3 miles of jogging a day. I do like to eat greens and vegetables and fruits, so I've had no trouble taking to this way of eating. I like the idea that I will have a way of eating that I can easily sustain without thinking about it. I'll write more as time goes on

Customer Reviews:
Very Soothing Voice and Music.......2007-06-11
I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.
Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.
Fantastic!.......2007-01-28
After having so much success with Trevor's cd "Your Power Within" I had to try "Relax Your Way to Thin." I've lost 17 pounds so far and it is fantastic! I've never wanted to say I'm on a "diet" and I didn't really want to change my eating habits. But, after listening to the cd, my whole attitude about food and healty eating habits started changing. It made me realize that I wasn't denying myself anything by eating healthier, I was actually giving myself more. The weight started coming off, I'm feeling great and I'm sleeping soundly. Awesome CD, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to loose weight.
Didnt work.......2007-01-12
This didnt work for me. Maybe because everytime I turned it on I fell asleep. Good way to fall asleep if you are having trouble. Bad way to lose weight.
Very impressed!!.......2006-11-06
I had gone to a Hypnotherapist before to lose weight and did not have much luck. However, I decided to try Trevor's method...and it works!! My eating habits changed dramatically after only listening to the cd twice. It is the most relaxing experience I have ever had. This cd allows you to fall asleep, so I listen to it while I am going to bed. It says that even if you do fall asleep your sibconcious will receive the messages that Trevor sends, without a doubt, it does! I am really amazed by this cd! I am getting ready to order his cd's for exercise and to quit smoking.
Thank you Trevor!!!
Amazing Changes!.......2005-08-04
This is an amazing CD with incredible results! I have always had weight problems, tried all the fad diets and always gained the weight back. Trevor has a soothing, reassuring and relaxing voice that has helped me to really start losing the weight. I have never looked or felt better, and I'm keeping the pounds off. This program has truly changed my life and I owe it all to Trevor. Thank you!

Book Description
Using this science-based plan, dieters will learn how to eat in order to boost serotonin, the brain chemical that shuts off appetite and turns on feelings of calm. This clinically tested program is also the first to offer antidepressant users an effective way to lose extra weight associated with their medication.
The Serotonin Weight Loss Plan is based on more than 30 years of pioneering research at MIT by internationally renowned scientist Dr. Judith Wurtman on the brain, emotions, appetite, and overeating. Using this research, she and Dr. Nina Marquis devised a program that puts the brain in charge of food intake. This simple 12-week plan, with more than 75 delicious recipes, was successfully tested on hundreds of clients at the Adara weight loss centers founded by the authors. Readers will lose up to 2 pounds a week—while reducing stress and improving their moods.
Because the plan is designed to turn on serotonin and turn off the need to eat, readers will never feel deprived. In addition, as serotonin increases feelings of well-being, emotional eating will vanish.
Customer Reviews:
It works!.......2007-09-20
This is fabulous. I find myself feeling much healthier by following the simple steps and regulated snacking. It really shocked me the difference this diet (now a lifestyle) made in my life. I feel better, my body functions better and in conjunction with yoga, the overall quality of my life has improved.
question - help....???.......2007-09-03
I do not understand...I thought when you go on an anti-depressant it was suppose to help balance your unbalanced hormones and chemicals? I thought it was suppose to give us more serotonin, not less?? I was first put on an antidepressant when a doctor told me it would help give me energy (I was not depressed, I had a long battle with mono and still had fevers and fatigue). I gained about 60 pounds, did not get any energy, felt "odd", not quite myself. It was not fun. Eventually went off the pills for a few years. Then started having anxiety and not feeling very good (blood work showed my hormones were really unbalanced, had me in "post-menopausal" in some areas, even though I was only 30 yrs. old and still menstruating, but just my hormones in general seemed all out of whack),so I was put back on another antidepressant. I thought these meds were suppose to help us feel better, more calm, less stressed, sleep better, put us in balance, etc. Why do they seem to do little other than cause major weight gain? I am considering buying this book. If you follow the diet, does it help you more than antidepressants? Anyone gone off their antidepressants after following the diet for a while? (I'm not talking about those with bi-polar and major depression for whom the meds have truly helped and been benefical, but for anyone who has had doctors pop them on antidepressants when you weren't really depressed?).
The Serotonin Power Diet.......2007-07-18
We've all done it- eating a whole bag of potato chips or more cookies than we'd like to admit when trying to deal with stress, anxiety, fatigue, or sadness. The thing is that it works. After eating that comfort food, we feel like we can face the world once again. So food becomes a refuge and the scale reflects it.
Then, along comes the Atkins diet. No carbs. Truthfully, how long did it take you to cheat during your first bout of PMS? Even when you were being "good", how bad were the carb cravings?
The Serotonin Power Diet makes carbs permissible once again, in moderation and at the right times. One small carbohydrate filled snack, eaten about an hour before a meal can actually reduce your appetite allowing you to eat appropriate portions of healthy foods without cravings or feeling like you are actually on a diet.
Unlike many diets, I can see The Serotonin Power Diet actually fitting into my everyday lifestyle. Craving carbs during PMS or when I'm tired often derails my nutritional efforts. Having a small snack seems to alleviate that feeling that I've failed in my efforts and relieves my cravings.
The Serotinin Power Diet .......2007-05-21
I found Judith Wurtman's book The Serotinin Power Diet to be the only book that deals with what I consider, really counts: Hunger control.
Through their year's of research at MIT they have learned what triggers binging and hunger and teaches you what to eat, before attending social events etc. It teaches you how to control you appetite so you can go into any situation and control yourself and not overeat. So you loose weight easily.
I don't follow her diet I just follow her concept and principles as to how to feed myself for not being hungry, particularly when I have social events.
Being at home it is easy to follow any plan; it the going out with friends etc that makes it difficult. But that's the key; She has taught me how not to be hungry.
I have lost 15 pounds in a little less than three months and I am on my way to normalize my body weight and speciallly, lower my glucose.
First time something works for me.
R Hirst
Miami Fla
Interesting.......2007-05-16
This is a book about how people already on SSRIs can better manage their diet. It is not a book that will give you information about how to avoid using SSRIs by increasing your serotonin levels through diet.
I thought it was the latter, so it didn't really help me. But if you are on sSRI sand want to manage your weight better, it may help.

Book Description
We can spend our whole lives trying to satisfy the one insatiable part of our being, our soul craving. Our capacity for spiritual experience both proves our need for something greater than ourselves and leaves us wanting when we fill it with anything but God.
Soul Cravings is a powerful, down-to-earth exposition that interprets our need for intimacy, meaning, and destiny as common sense apologetics pointing to the existence of and our need for God. The book will deeply stir the reader to consider and chase after the spiritual implications of their soul's deepest longings.
Customer Reviews:
Soul Cravings.......2007-07-20
I love Erwin McManus, especially hearing him speak, but his writing is excellent as well. He has a great way of relating to all types of people, and that is what this book is about. We all have cravings within our souls that are basically what we are looking for in life: intimacy, purpose, and meaning. It really helps you look inside your heart and figure out why you are doing things and how you might want to change that to get to a good place in the future. He really makes you think, and his stories and examples from current culture are excellent.
'Soul cravings' are what defines us as human.......2007-06-09
'Soul cravings' are what defines us as human - it's an inner quest for more than physical sustenance, but for spiritual meanings in life - and SOUL CRAVINGS seeks to define the parameters of these cravings for intimacy and community, destiny and meaning in life. It's these basic cravings which suggest a human connection with God, Erwin McManus maintains: chapters analyze belief, belonging, and more in a fine exploration of human interconnections and faith.
Providing us with a whole lot to think about on our own........2007-06-06
Some of the greatest frustrations of life on earth stem from our deep desire for those things that this life can never provide, which Erwin McManus identifies as the cravings of our soul. McManus, pastor of the Mosaic community in Los Angeles and author of Gold Medallion finalist AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE, sees our universal cravings as a search for identity, destiny and meaning, and he arranges SOUL CRAVINGS accordingly.
Each chapter in those three sections is labeled an "entry," an accurate description for writing that at times has the feel of a journal entry. Only with McManus, the writing is a cut above the way most of us would record our musings. He startles you every now and then with a sentence that you know you'll remember forever. One example, from Entry #13, Being Loved to Death, in reference to Jesus' encounter with the Pharisees and the woman caught in adultery (the "Let him who is without sin throw the first stone" passage): "If Jesus' encounter with this unnamed adulterous woman tells us anything," he writes, "it reveals the unexpected truth that the safest place for a sinful person to go is to God." We may already know that, we may in fact have known that for years, but we may never have thought to express it in that way --- describing God as the safest place for a sinner to go.
McManus's way with words may be the book's greatest strength. He's so good with words that it takes a while before you realize that you have no better idea of what to do with your unfulfilled soul cravings than you had before you read the book. It's like the way you feel after a profound and caffeine-laced philosophical discussion with a friend about the deeper issues of life. Neither one of you is any closer to understanding those deeper issues, but you feel better just knowing there's someone you can talk to on that level. The meaning of life, the nature of faith, the resiliency of the human spirit, the problem of evil, the value of doubting --- McManus thinks out loud about all this and more, providing us with a whole lot to think about on our own.
If there is an answer to be found in SOUL CRAVINGS, it is this: our cravings begin and end with God. Throughout, McManus reminds us that, ultimately, whatever it is that we crave most --- for instance, love --- is already available to us in our relationship with God. And trying to fill those cravings with anything other than God is not only futile but can also be destructive. He writes: "No matter what we become, it is never enough. Our souls always crave more. It's not because they're insatiable, but because we know there's more to be had." That "more" is a life of intimacy, destiny and meaning --- all of which can only be found in a life with God.

Must-Addressed Issue Addressed.......2007-05-08
I loved this book! It's not only deep and meaningful, but it's easy-to-read and captures you. It's relative and answers those questions we constantly ponder and it offers a solution to our cravings.
McManus substitutes philosophical and psychological ideas for biblical ones.......2007-05-07
Soul Cravings is sort of an apologetic aimed at the postmodern generation. Rather than persuade his audience with biblical proofs, scientific evidence or logical arguments, McManus has chosen a philosophical approach. His reasoning is that our souls crave three things: intimacy, destiny and meaning. The fact that all human beings have these cravings is evidence for the existence of God.
The big question is, if these cravings do point us to God, just where and how are we to find Him? The underlying theme throughout the book is that we will find Him in ourselves as we allow our cravings to lead us. In the introduction (it should be noted that McManus "creatively" does not use page numbers, rather he has 68 "entries" of various lengths) he writes, "This is not a book focused on empirical evidence for God. It is about coming to know ourselves...It is about our story; and if God exists, we should be able to find Him there." To this end we are told to "follow love and it will guide you to God" (part 1, entry 4). Soul Cravings ends where it begins. In the conclusion we read, "All the evidence you need to prove God is waiting within you to be discovered." And, "If you pay attention to your soul, it will guide you to God." Again, "Explore nowhere else except deep within yourself...you will come face-to-face with God."
Rather than take the reader back to Scripture (which describes and points the true way to God) or to Jesus, who most fully explains Him (John 1:14, 18), McManus would have us look inside ourselves to find God. And while Romans 1 and 2 would agree that God has planted evidence of Himself within our souls, the Scriptures are equally clear that "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). One of the problems with pointing people back to themselves to find God lies in the wickedness of our hearts (Jeremiah 17:9) and the inadequacy of our souls to comprehend God unaided by the Spirit using the Word. This is the fatal flaw in McManus' system. At no point does he explain to his reader the gospel message. It is as if such information will get in the way. Rather, we follow our cravings and our cravings lead us to God. The Scriptures do not agree.
An interrelated problem found in Soul Cravings is the insistence that God's love is unconditional. "What in the world would happen," McManus asks, "if people actually began discovering the actual message of Jesus Christ--that love is unconditional...that Jesus was offering His love freely and without condition?" (part 1, entry 10). What does McManus mean by this? Is faith not the human condition for receiving saving grace? McManus never speaks of the cross as necessary for our atonement or redemption or for propitiation which satisfies the righteous wrath of God. Instead, the cross "is God's declaration of love for you" (conclusion). So the cross is gutted of its full meaning and replaced with the gospel of unconditional love.
Soul Cravings has its high moments. McManus' ability as a motivational speaker and writer are evidenced in the many inspirational stories and pep rally feel. But McManus substitutes philosophical and psychological ideas for biblical ones. In the end he succeeds in identifying the true longing of our heart (cravings) but fails to point us in the right direction. He does focus us on God, but it is the God found within our souls. He talks about Christ and the cross but reduces their meaning to nothing more than unconditional love. He does not explain man's great problem as being sin, and his solution found only in Christ. And he does not talk to us about repentance or faith. He has opened the door in Soul Cravings to explore the true God but he has not taken his reader beyond the threshold.

The same brain chemicals that are altered by antidepressant drugs are also affected by the foods we eat. According to addiction expert DesMaisons, many people, including those who are depressed, are "sugar sensitive." Eating sweets gives them a temporary emotional boost, which leads to a craving for still more sweets. The best way to keep these brain chemicals in the right balance and keep blood-sugar levels steady, she says, is through the dietary plan she describes in Potatoes Not Prozac. Her rules are fairly simple--eat three meals a day, eat proteins with every meal (especially those high in the amino acid tryptophan, which creates the calming neurotransmitter serotonin), and eat more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and, yes, potatoes. Not only will this make you less depressed, DesMaisons says, but it will also keep you from craving too much of the foods you shouldn't eat, making it a self-regulating system.
Book Description
Are You Sugar Sensitive?
Have you ever wondered why you just can't seem to say no to fattening foods, alcohol or troubling behaviors like overspending and overworking? The answer is not that you're lazy, self-indulgent or undisciplined. The problem lies in your body chemistry.
In her groundbreaking book, Potatoes Not Prozac, Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D., addictive nutrition expert, reveals that emotional troubles such as mood swings or depression often can't be fought by medication. Her radical new way of finding and maintaining mental and physical health offers instead a prescription for altering our eating habits. Millions of people are sugar-sensitive -- which means they have a special body chemistry that reacts in extreme ways to sugar and refined carbohydrates like white bread and pasta. DesMaisons reveals that these "comfort" foods actually provide just the opposite effect, triggering feelings of exhaustion, hopelessness and low self-esteem. What's worse, these foods don't stop our cravings for them -- they only make us want to go back for more.
Helping us to free ourselves from sugar dependency, DesMaisons explains how certain food dependent chemicals in the brain regulate our moods. Once we understand how these biochemicals react to what we eat -- or what we don't eat -- we are free to control our lives. Serotonin, beta-endorphins and blood sugar need to be kept in balance. We can achieve this balance by following DesMaisons's inexpensive, all-natural nutritional plan, which has resulted in a 92 percent success rate with recovering alcoholics, and emotional stability for the thousands of people she has treated in her practice.
In addition to food charts, questionnaires to determine your own sugar sensitivity, and accessible scientific lessons that explain your body chemistry, DesMaisons provides a straightforward seven-step plan to overcome your addictions. There is no regime of measurements or self-denial: you tailor the plan to your tastes and lifestyle. These steps are actually more liberating than any diet could be. You will no longer settle for the short-term relief from pain or problems that cookies or ice cream might give you. You will find the optimism, energy and high self-esteem you have craved for so long. Because DesMaisons is committed to her own recovery, she is a compassionate, skilled guide in navigating you through this process, one choice at a time. And what you learn in the end, she says, is that the process isn't about food at all. "As we come into balance, we can shape our own direction rather than being driven by biochemical circumstances. We feel empowered to make changes in our lives and to control what is happening to us. What seemed like a story about food is really a story about possibility." You can change your life with Potatoes Not Prozac.

The info is great, the book is great, but there's more info in the more recent books.
Odd.......2007-07-02
There are some things that trouble me about this book, like push snacking to mealtime. Hum... and her idea of snacks is what sparks the whole sugar sensitivity process. I like Suzann Somers' book is better; she explains the carbs. This book just tells you to keep track of what you eat, when you eat and how you feel after eating whatever it is you eat. I think you should watch what you eat and you should know what you're eating. This book makes very few explanations about what each food is and how it helps your mind, except by saying eat protein and don't eat refined sugar.
Prescribe Your Own Anti-Depressants and Improve Your Life.......2007-03-15
This book and Natural Prozac changed how I look at food. In our sugar and caffiene addicted world where food is a commodity to be inhaled on the run, it's easy to lose perspective on what food is and how it affects us. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to balance their mood, improve how they feel and function during the day or stablize their sleeping habits.
Timeless Advice!.......2007-03-04
I read this just recently, long after it came out, but after following it for a month, I have more energy, I'm not stuck in that numbing lethargy that was a sort of depression, and I've lost a little weight. This book is right on, and I highly recommend it.
I'm FAT and miserable but not craving sugar.... Woopie.........2007-02-12
I am addicted to sugar. I read this book and kept a journal of my eating habits. I stopped craving sugar, but now I'm fat. I've gone from my slender size 2-4 to a plump size 6 pushing size 8. There has to be a better way... I've got a Michelin tire around my waste that waddles when I walk... I think I need some alcohol to feel better. HA!

Richard and Rachael Heller, both research scientists and professors, have taken the dieting world by storm with their bestselling Carbohydrate Addict's Diet and Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program. Now there's a companion cookbook, which adherents to their carbohydrate-cutting regimen can use from sunup to sundown without fear of straying from their dietary objectives. With only a short introduction on the basic goal of the diet--to limit insulin intake in order to lessen carbohydrate cravings and thereby lose weight--this cookbook presents 250 easy recipes that range from appetizers and breakfasts to meat, seafood, and vegetarian entrées and snacks.
Those who have not already read The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet or related titles and are not familiar with the program's strategy may at first find the many high-fat recipes included here counterintuitive to the notion of a diet. But the idea is simple: eliminate the foods that trigger overeating--starches, snack foods, and sweets--and replace them with protein-rich, fibrous meals that help to normalize blood-sugar levels and curb the impulse to binge. Such an approach allows for higher fat consumption--the body metabolizes fat more efficiently when there is less insulin in the blood stream--and even has the psychologically beneficial side effect of permitting a certain amount of indulgence. People usually leery of diets because they don't want to give up their weekly cheeseburger will be awed by recipes such as the egg- and cream-augmented Left Bank Burgers. Likewise, the Herbed Cheese Dip with cheddar, cream cheese, and sour cream is a startlingly deluxe accompaniment for the normally ascetic plate of raw veggies; the Crustless Spinach Pie entices with its rich mix of feta, Parmesan, eggs, herbs, and olive oil.
The Hellers' approach to cooking is by no means highbrow and their recipes are often simply no-starch variations on standard fare (Steak in a Blanket replaces the dough with romaine lettuce, for example). An unspecified teriyaki sauce is a staple in their kitchen, and experienced cooks may wonder if they really mean tamari or soy sauce. People who have health restrictions on salt and alcohol (a few recipes call for wine) will want to have the original Carbohydrate Addict's Diet book handy in order to look up suitable alternatives--they are not included with this cookbook. That inconvenience aside, dieters will have no qualms about these tasteful recipes as they eat their way toward a slimmer, healthier future. --Rebecca Wright

Good starter cookbook.......2006-09-27
I really liked this cookbook a few years back when I was just learning to cook. The recipes are simple, healthy, and pretty good.
These days, though, I hardly use it - now that I'm more experienced with cooking, the recipes seem a little bit *too* simple. They're not exactly bland, but they're not very exciting, either. The only thing I still regularly make is the Chicken Paprikash recipe, which is quite good (although I have to turn my stove a lot hotter than the book says or the chicken comes out practically raw).
Still, if you're looking for simple and healthy recipes, or if your tastes aren't too adventurous, this is well worth the price.
Easy And Delicious Low-Carb Recipes!.......2004-02-18
This was the first low-carb cookbook that I bought after choosing to lessen the carbs in my diet. It provides 250 new low-carb recipes, as well as guidelines on how to incorporate Health Agency Recommendations and American Heart Association's Recommendations into the Carbohydrate Addict's Program. After these recommendations, the book delves right into delicious low-carb recipes!
The recipes are divided in 12 sections:
Appetizers and Soups A few recipes from this section include Marinated Thai Chicken, Aromatic Shrimp Soup, Herbed Cheese Dip, and Holiday Meatball Appetizer.
Breakfasts Hearty Breakfast Quiche, Salmon Rolls With Cream Cheese, Savory Spinach Omelet, and Breakfast Pockets are but a few of the easy, mouth-watering recipes in this section.
Dips, Dressings, And Sauces Delcious recipes include Cucumber Cloud Supreme, Feta Vinaigrette, Creamy Clam and Crab Dip, and Roasted Green Pepper Sauce.
Beef and Veal Veal Marsala Burgers, Beef Provencal Stuffed With Mushrooms, Spicy Olive Burgers, and Peking Stir-fry Beef are but a few tasty dishes!
Lamb Recipes include Meditteranean Shish Kebob, Tarragon Lamb, and Herbed Leg of Lamb.
Pork Sumptuous Pork Salad, Roasted Pork With Rosemary and Garlic, Shanghai Pork Roast, and Paprika Pork Chops are just a few of the pork fare!
Poultry Crustless Chicken Potpie, Peppery Chicken Salad, Chicken Wings With Spicy Mustard Topping, and Christmas Hens are among the easy recipes featured in this section.
Seafood Classic Shrimp Scampi, Barnacle Bill's Scallops, Savory Fish With Vegetables, Steamed Mussels Peppercorn, and Broiled Swordfish With Cilantro Oil, are just a few of the many seafood recipes!
Salads California Greek Salad, Christmas Christmas Cabbage Salad, Taco Spinach Salad, and Tangy Cauliflower Salad are among the fresh fare in this section.
Vegetables Creamy Veggie Supreme, Super Stuffed Mushrooms, Asparagus-Egg-Mushroom Casserole, and Three Green Garlic Toss are several of the vegetable dishes featured in this section.
Vegetarian Alternatives Cheesy Broccoli Casserole, Asparagus Parmesan Soup, Stir-Fried Vegetable Special, and Cheesy Breakfast "Sausages" and Tofu Stir-Fry are some of the vegetarian alternatives shared in this inventive section.
Quick Fix Dishes and Snacks Poached Salmon Northwest, Low-Carb Mushroom Soup, Baked Flounder Italiano, and Creamy Asian-Style Scallops are but a few of the delectable recipes that are a snap to make.
What I love about this cookbook is that all of the dishes are easy to make, none of the recipes call for exotic food items that may be hard to find, and most of the dishes can be put together very quickly. Best of all, they're all low-carb and but high on taste!
The Carbohydrate Addicts Cookbook.......2003-10-26
Don't waste your money!! I would give it a zero if I could.
They call this a cookbook?.......2003-09-17
Ok, well maybe I'm a cookbook snob, but I couldn't fathom some of these "recipes". Baked Brie? I mean come on... who needs a recipe to put a wheel of Brie into the oven?? Or putting sausage in the oven with mustard slathered all over it, or rolling up some chicken and mustard in a lettuce leaf. These are more IDEAS but RECIPES??? I will admit to loving Bon Appetit and Jacques and Julia, so you'll need to relate there to get me. Plus, most of their recipes call for "teriyaki sauce"??? It's like my grandma making hundreds of recipe that call for Mrs. Dash. What do they mean "teriyaki sauce"? If they really mean that , it has sugar or corn syrup in it. If not, is this meaning soy sauce? If so, why is it in EVERYTHING??? I love low carb food, but this cookbook did not help me come to that love.

Cravings.......2007-09-05
I really enjoyed this book. I"ve read all of Laurell Hamiltons books and am now starting on MaryJanice Davidson. I was disappointed to find that there was no continuation of the other two writers characters as I found them to be very interesting and would have liked to read more about them.
Incubus Dreams.......2007-08-22
The Laurell K. Hamilton contribution to this collection is taken directly from her book Incubus Dreams. What a rip off for Anita Blake fans.
Summer reading.......2007-06-10
Great little collection of short stories to read whilst enjoying a relaxing summer day. No great earth-shaking revelations or deep philosophy - just a fun read.
Cravings is great.......2007-01-28
I loved the book. The stories were well writtin. I have the complete set of Anita Blake series by Ms. Hamilton, so I knew her story would be great. The other 3 stories were great as well.
Three All-Stars and one Bench Warmer.......2006-10-16
Great read! Three wonderful authors: MaryJanice Davidson, Eileen Wilks and Rebecca York. Also, the late great Laurell K. Hamilton whose name alone used to make us want to pick up the book. Alas, that is so not the case anymore.
In "Dead Girls Don't Dance" (MaryJanice Davidson) you have a young vampire who has just run into the man of her teenage dreams. It's cute, funny, you fall in love with the folks in this story. I want to see more of Ms. Andrea Mercer. I hope she writes another story about her.
"Originally Human" (Eileen Wilks) is a bit different. Once again we have characters we can identify with and like. A very likeable Molly finds an injured man and tries to help. Not much of a hook but I don't want to give away the surprises in this very good story.
"Burning Moon" (Rebecca York) has a werewolf tracking his wife's killer and finding a lot more than he bargained for. Some good (new) werewolf family information. This is another one I hope with be continued.
Oh, let's face it: all three of these stories (especially the first two) are just so darn good you don't want them to end. I truly hope the authors read this review some day and it encourages them to write more on the characters. I just loved 'em all.
Guess I should say something about Hamilton's "Blood Upon My Lips". Let's see, it's the new and extremely UNimproved Anita Blake wanting to have sex. (Yawn) Oh wait. When DOESN'T the new and UNimproved Anita Blake want to have sex? With anybody. Or anything. Lordy, the family pets won't be safe if this keeps up. "Hide the collie, maw, that freak Blake is hanging around outside again." If Hamilton insists on Blake screwing ANYthing available I wish she'd be a little quieter about it. The constant screaming has got to be getting on everyone's nerves. It's certainly getting on mine. Oh, and if there are any of the OLD Blake fans out there -- you remember Anita Blake VAMPIRE HUNTER? Well, that Blake died a couple of books ago and some unattractive, whiney, Valley girl from Hell has taken her place.
Please God. Let "Edward" show up fully armed and take us all out of our misery. Also, make sure he shoots first and asks questions later. If not, the Valley Girl will certainly attempt to molest him and anyone he has with him. Where the heck is Otto when you need him?
Finally, yes buy or borrow the book. It is well worth it. Just skip the first story and enjoy yourself with the remaining three.

Book Description
Today's 18-to-40-year-olds make for a notoriously elusive group of consumers: they're savvy, sophisticated, and particular. They're all but immune to traditional advertising and have an instinctive sense of quality and fair pricing. Inundated with choices, they are drawn to brands that satisfy not just what they need, but what they crave. At the same time, these consumers are spending money like it's going out of style. Generation X has firmly refuted its slacker reputation and is nearing the height of its earning potential. Generation Y has more buying power than any previous generation of teens and twentysomethings. But how to win their attention and loyalty?
In Mind Your X's and Y's, Lisa Johnson proves that the buying habits of 18-to-40-year-olds can be anticipated. Johnson, coauthor of Don't Think Pink and a leading marketing consultant, pinpoints the new rules of engagement for this Connected Generation. Based on her own and others' groundbreaking research, she looks into the heart of the Gen X and Y psyche to identify its ten core cravings -- for adventure, for high-concept design, for new families and social networks, and for personal storytelling, to name a few.
This revolutionary book is packed with fascinating case studies of established and breakaway brands from every major industry, interviews with dozens of maverick thinkers and hundreds of consumers, and numerous revealing statistics. Johnson analyzes the scope of each craving to determine how it drives specific buying behaviors and offers relevant data that illustrate its impact. Mind Your X's and Y's equips anyone who wants to reach these consumers -- brand managers and their advertising, online, creative, packaging, events, and promotions teams; small-business owners and their marketing staff; advertising agencies and specialists -- with the know-how to transform market research into profitable strategies.
Members of Generations X and Y are the most coveted and hard-to-reach consumers in the marketplace. Mind Your X's and Y's is a master class in how to create compelling brands for this Connected Generation.

Amazing assessment of the X and Y generations.......2007-01-04
If you need to understand how young people make purchasing decisions, this book will put you way ahead of the competition. Even my young, technically savvy friends have learned new things from reading this book.
A book that hits you where you live and shows you step by step how to influence one of the biggest markets in the nation today.......2006-09-07
I loved this book, it is one of the best that I've read this year.
This is an important book because it gives you a clear, step by step roadmap for influencing and persuading one of the most fickle (and over marketed) consumer groups of our era, those consumers between 18 - 40.
The author goes into exacting detail about how this market consumes information and how you can create messages that resonate with them and stick. She also tells you what doesn't work (I cringed several times as I recognized mistakes that I made).
If you are in this age range you'll find this book one of the most refreshing you've ever read because it will describe you and how you consume information (I know it did for me) and it will help you make the transition between the kind of marketer you are today and one that can be even more effective.
This book is a guidebook, a roadmap and a manifesto. Grab this book today, even if your market it older, one of the things that the author didn't cover is how much more like 18 - 40 year olds older generations are becoming in their consumption of information and their resistance to advertising. Most of the information in this book applies to anyone who is active in today's world regardless of their age.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

For most health books, the word cure in the title is a definite sign to steer clear. The Diet Cure is a refreshing exception. Author Julia Ross has the unusual job description of "nutritional psychologist," which means that she works with people to eradicate food cravings, addictions, and eating disorders (including overeating). The gist of The Diet Cure plan is that food allergies, hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, and thyroid dysfunction, among other factors, cause biochemical imbalances that lead to food addiction and weight gain, and that these problems can usually be lessened or eradicated with the proper diet and supplements.
To be sure, most of these health problems ought to be diagnosed by a medical professional, but they often get overlooked because their symptoms can be numerous and vague (fatigue, depression, inability to concentrate). They're not easily diagnosed by the common managed-care tests (such as the TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, blood test; Ross advises several more specific tests if a thyroid problem is suspected). Ross's questionnaires, worksheets, and profiles of case studies from her 10 years of clinical experience will enable you to determine what may be the hidden causes that sabotage your weight-loss efforts.
Ross's book should be lauded for its educational tone. She warns of the dangers of zinc and vitamin B1 deficiencies, two common problems found in chronic dieters, along with protein and fat deficiencies and adrenal exhaustion (which is particularly common in caffeine fiends). She rails against the most popular diet programs, including the Zone, the Atkins Diet, and even Weight Watchers, for (among other things) their ignorance of food allergies such as grains, dairy products, and sugar. For those whom Ross terms, perhaps frighteningly, sugar addicts or "recreational sugar users," she suggests an amino-acid and fish-oil supplement plan to curb sugar cravings and aid weight loss. Many of her patients over the past decade testify in the book that their environmental allergies and weight-loss problems disappeared after they cut sugar from their diets.
Ross's suggestions may seem radical to many primary-care physicians; her approach to health and weight loss definitely takes a holistic approach. She does, however, back up her suggestions and plan with references to medical studies, along with dozens of print and online resources on finding a nutritionist, naturopathic physician, holistic M.D., and testing labs (many of them mail-order). This is one diet that Americans in particular ought to pay attention to.
Book Description
This fast, personalized body repair manual for weight loss, mood balance, and energy will leave you satisfied--not starving.
More than eighty million Americans are regular dieters and eight million of them suffer from some sort of eating disorder. Just as many eat normally but still gain weight. Finally, there is a plan to end yo-yo dieting and binge eating. Based on ten years of proven clinical results, The Diet Cure shatters the myths to reveal the real causes of overeating and weight gain. A Miracle!.......2007-09-28
I am pretty savvy when it comes to nutrition and healthy living, I've read alot of books on this topic and have been eating whole organic foods most of my adult life. I avoid fast food, processed food, additives, simple sugars, wheat, etc. I add supplements here and there when needed, keep the meals balanced with the right amount of protien, carbs and fats, etc. I thought I was doing pretty good, at least in the top 20% so I thought. Well, Julia Ross has changed my life. Within a week on her program, the mental fog that has been slowly drifting into my existence over the past 10 years has lifted. My memory has improved as well as my focus and mental clarity. My sensitivity to life's pressures and stresses is cut by half. I have more energy and it is more consistent through the day. My carb addiction and afternoon blood sugar drops (I have often commented (half) jokingly about joining "bread addicts anonymous") are nothing like they were. After one week on her program, I have experienced a dramatic improvement in all these areas. The program lasts three months, I am truly excited to see the end results of this cure. I purchased this book for myself along with The Mood Cure for my husband and we have been going through the books together. We are both experiencing dramatic improvements in our lives. It is worth mentioning that I was not achieving results on the lower doses (she gives a range). Follow her instructions and increase your dose until you get results. It may seem like a lot of supplements, but stay with it and follow her instructions. Once I hit the right dosages, I got results very quickly. Julia Ross and her Nutritional Psychology colleagues call it science, but for us this information is a *blessing* of the highest order. Thank you Julia for making this information available to the masses!
Diet Cure.......2007-09-17
I liked the book and unlike most diet books as its primary role is to make one feel better rather than skinny. For those primarily interested in Amino Acids and the role of aminos in depression, anxiety, ocd, etc the Mood Cure is much better. The Mood Cure is written better, has much of the same information and diet suggestions and seems to be a rewrite of the Diet Cure, which could explain why the writing is better. At any rate both books come highly recommended. I have been following the amino acid suggestions and I must say, I feel better. Bravo!
Maks Sense of it All.......2007-07-27
Written for the lay person, but loaded with the scientific basis of nutrition and what the foods we eat do once inside our bodies. I'm following the advice given in the book and it has been spot on. I recognized a lot from college chemistry and biology, but this was far, far easier to understand and apply. I now look at food in a whole new light and feel better than I have in years. My only criticism would be that she continually refers you to other chapters, which made sense within the context of whatever subject she was on, but you had to keep going to the table of contents. It would have been helpful to have the chapter number included on the top of the right hand page so you could leaf through to the referred chapter quickly, but all in all a small inconvenience in an otherwise great experience. This book is a keeper for future reference, and I have already recommended it to some friends.
Top notch research.......2006-08-02
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are. Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published. More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil. Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods. Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function. Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice. Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.
Tons of information. Sometimes too much........2006-07-10
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone.

Why is it so hard to resist the temptation of chocolate? Because chocolate triggers the release of natural opiates in the brain. It's a drug "strong enough to keep us coming back for more," according to nutritional researcher Neal Barnard, M.D., president and founder of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Cheese also releases mild opiates during digestion--no wonder we crave it. In Breaking the Food Seduction, Barnard helps you understand and overcome your food cravings. He explains which foods "hook" us the most and why, and what to do to break free when you want to decrease the calories and fat that accompany these seductive foods. Cheese, for example, is about 70 percent saturated fat and has more cholesterol, ounce for ounce, than a steak.
Barnard offers seven steps to breaking your food cravings, devoting a chapter to each one, with anecdotes and plenty of clear, sound, practical tips. Then he presents guidelines for healthy eating using "the New Four Food Groups"--vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains--with a three-week menu plan and 113 healthful, vegan recipes. Highly recommended for people who want to understand their food cravings and finally get rid of them. --Joan Price

Good Book with Hidden Agenda.......2007-09-26
This book really surprised me. There are many good tips for eating right and a lot of valuable information here, but the author ends up telling the reader that he/she is too weak to ever go back to eating any of the foods that he/she was addicted to (meat, cheese, sugar). Therefore, the reader must go on a strict vegan diet for life. Although I understand the value of such a diet, I am amazed at how this book goes in such a severe direction. Why can't someone possess enough willpower to keep meat and dairy products in their diet? I will keep this book for its valuable information but ignore the vegan fanaticism.
Amazing!.......2007-03-15
This book confirms all those things you suspected, but thought were myths. Dr. Barnard lays out the (shocking) facts. Though hard to believe, everything is footnoted to the pages and pages of references in the back. The practical part is the second section, which tells how to put the information into practice. He gives a three-week plan to kick those cravings. The recipes in the back are easy and fresh-a whole cookbook! A bombshell of a book.
Want to know why you have to eat it?.......2007-03-09
Barnard's book is an enjoyable read and clearly explains the grasp food holds on many of us. While my individual struggle is cheese, I've learned the chemical reaction it causes within my body is almost like a drug addiction. And this makes perfect since! Every so often I have an urge to eat something cheesy, and afterwards my body is very relaxed/satisfied. Such as one might feel after they got their "fix." Now, I am fighting my cravings for better and more natural health. Did you know humans are the only mammals who drink milk(aka use dairy) throughout their Life? We aren't supposed too!!!
Overweight, want to change your life in three weeks?.......2006-11-17
It works, it's easy, he tells you why and how.
Some foods are addicting. Don't eat them and you'll loose weight. It takes about three weeks (ex-smokers will note the similar time period) for one's body to catch on. A small price to pay for the gain (loss!).
I read this book last Summer, followed the advice. Lost about 20 pounds in a month. Only exercise was walking two or three miles per week which I was doing anyway. My cholesterol's down from around 240 to 180, Liptor bottles are in the trash, stomach, back and joint pains fading away. This winter, next year, the weight's still gone.
His explanations are clear, simple and scientific. There are detail lists of foods (Bad: milk products, especially cheese, meat, fish, coffee, chocolate, and Good: beans, long grained rice, vegetables, fruits, some nuts), recopies, and some very solid advice about dieting psychology which would work for any diet.
Oh, and it's very readable.
Thank you Dr. Branard.
Outsmart your food cravings.......2006-10-21
What is the food seduction and why do you want to break it?
In the first part of this book, the author says that some foods have addictive qualities because they contain very small amounts of opiate like substances. Some people seem to be more susceptible to these substances and, in effect, become addicted to them. The foods the author identifies as having these substances are: sugar, chocolate, cheese, and meat. Unfortunately, these foods are commonly associated with causing obesity and all of the health problems related to obesity. So it is important to break the seductive quality these foods may have for you.
How do you do that? The author is skeptical of relying upon simple will power. The addictive like quality these foods have will eventually overcome your will power. Straining to deprive yourself of them leads to feelings of deprivation, guilt, hopelessness, and other negative emotions as you eventually succumb to your addictions again.
In the second part of the book, the author proposes a seven-step program to help you develop a food-craving-free body.
Step one. Start with a healthy breakfast. Oatmeal or other cereals/grains and fruits are an excellent choice. This recommendation sounds trite, but ignoring it can easily lead to cravings later in the day. The author tells stories of dieters who failed, yet were proud that they had successfully skipped meals during the day. Successful dieters identify healthy foods to eat, and then they make sure to eat enough of them during the day. If you don't consume enough calories from healthy foods to satisfy yourself, your cravings for fattening foods will surely overcome you. Hunger triggers cravings. Don't provoke it. Unlike diet plans that set the maximum number of calories you should consume per day, the author warns not to fall below the minimum necessary to avoid hunger. He says multiply your weight by 10 to get a rough guide for the minimum number of calories you need per day to satisfy you.
Step two. Eat foods that keep your blood sugar steady. The author believes in the glycemic index and recommends high fiber foods at the lower end of the index. The author is vegan and so the foods he recommends are beans, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
Step 3. The author recommends eating foods that boost the hormone leptin in your body. Leptin is a little known hormone that is thought to help control your appetite. The author says that eating a low-fat plant based diet and exercising will promote the effect of this hormone. I found this part of the author's argument circular and unconvincing. If you are eating a low-fat plant based diet and exercising you have already substantially achieved appetite control. Forget leptin.
Step 4. Identify craving cycles in your life and develop habits to avoid their effect. For some people, there are times of the day when they find themselves giving in to food cravings. For some women cravings may come on monthly cycles with their period. Many people have annual cycles as well, especially around the holiday period or during the winter. If you can identify your problem times, you can design strategies to minimize cravings at these times. The author suggests various ways for dealing with cycle cravings.
Step 5. Exercise, rest, and learn to let stress go. The author offers nothing new here, but provides many reminders of strategies and techniques that work for others.
Step 6. Call in the reinforcements. A common problem for dieters is that they try to convert others to do what they are doing. Most people, including your spouse, will not change their lifestyle based upon your exhortations. Instead, tell family members, friends, and co-workers what you are doing; ask only that they help you in avoiding the temptations that interfere with your program. Don't preach. This approach is more likely to get their support. Life is much easier when the people around you support what you are doing, even if they don't do it too. Enlist support; don't alienate people.
Step 7. Use extra motivators. The author identifies a whole range of motives for losing weight. Identify the ones important to you and focus on them. Don't be ashamed or shy about what is important to you. When you clearly identify why you want better health you will more likely stick with your program and achieve your goals.
In part three of the book the author discusses nutritional issues with a vegan diet. It may surprise some to learn that when you eat a low-fat plant based diet you normally need not limit daily calorie intake, portion size, or the total quantity of food you eat. Very little supplementation is recommended. He suggests a three-week starter plan to see if his program works for you.
Part four of the book contains a large selection of interesting and easy to fix recipes. This part of the book is outstanding. The author also discusses the content and uses of some foods in vegan cooking that are not commonly found in American cookery. You will find all you need to know about tofu, seitan, tempeh, tvp, tahini, and tamari among others.
The strong message the author gives you is not to fight or confront your food cravings directly. They are too powerful. Instead, use his non-confrontational strategies to avoid the control which food cravings exercise over you. The author is consistent in advocating a vegan diet to achieve your weight goals, but I didn't find his advocacy to be preachy or offensive.
