    Book Description

A revealing look at the college freshman experience, from an insider's point of view

After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behavior—eating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussions—made her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.

4 out of 5 stars Required Reading for University Administration and Parents.......2007-10-09

Rebeka Nathan's anthropological account of campus life at the anonymous "AnyU" public university should be read by every professor, university administrator, or parent of a college student. As Nathan says, "Most students have no understanding of...how the university actually functions," while professors "have no idea what a dorm room looks like,...or the cost of books, tuition and housing." Her assessment of what's wrong (students are working more nowadays, and "diversity" is nothing more than a buzzword) are dead-on.

5 out of 5 stars College freshman today!.......2007-09-18

Although this book was a mandatory assignment in a graduate course, it was a great read. The author's decision to transform from a professor to student was a brilliant idea to uncover the truths of college freshman. Although her methods raise some ethical flags, her discoveries of what goes on in the dorms, class and outside of class are amazingly true. Her discoveries at AnyU not only premise on this campus, but so many others.

In addition, so many professors today make unrealistic demands on college students. For once, a professor was able to understand what it is like to be a freshman and adapt to the needs of her students after this research. In addition, the author was able to express her ideas and those of others on academic integrity, meaningful courses, international students, learning and campus community.

The author's detailed descriptions of her personal experiences intrigued me every step of the way. I would definitely recommend anyone, student, parent or professor to read this book. Very insightful and productive research!

4 out of 5 stars Things look better when you're there.......2007-07-16

Shows what an older person in her 50s can get out of the college atmosphere by registering as a real full-time student. This anthropologist learned how younger students behave in the dorms, in the hall discussions, and what they really think of their teachers and of one another. The new (but somewhat older freshman) did not reveal who she really was and went along with the students in what they did or said. Not until the very end does she tell who she is; surprise and understanding are the remarks she heard, but retributions.

Quite an open book, like Augustine's Confessions (almost) and Rousseau's of the same title. It's a good read no matter what your age/sex/education.

    1 out of 5 stars Clueless.......2007-07-03

I'm around the author's age (50) and I actually went back to college to study, not to spy on people. Just through casual conversations I know 100x more than I learned from this book. You know, she has revelations like today's students have cell phones instead of rotary dial phones, and some have been known to actually drink alcohol a day or two before reaching age 21. (I'm being sarcastic.)
She didn't seem to interact much with students. This is a dry, dull, uninteresting book with little useful information and is more like a community college paper than a serious study.

4 out of 5 stars Informative to both the professor and the student.......2007-06-09

I found this book, this account of re-entering college to study the student, insightful. It brought back memories of my undergraduate days, though I did not go to a large public university like the one in the book. This fact leads me to disagree about with the author as to the state of "community" in the undergraduate life. The small, private school that I attended was a Christian college. In having this affiliation, it gave every student a connection to every other student, and this lead to more community than I was portrayed in the book. I am not suggesting that every college and university in the country become Christian, just that having another (or at least one) thread that ties all the students together did more for community than policy could. We regularly had meetings, floor activities, and group meals that were attended by the vast majority of the dorm/floor. In sharing another bond, we were more willing to share other things, which is something to think about at least.

I was surprised to learn that cheating was so prevalent in universities, and in student life. It was facts like this, and others that the author peppered throughout her narrative that I found, while not altogether new, useful and interesting. I was especially interested in the final chapter, which in the paperback edition was a discussion of ethics. I found the rules, both institutionally and self imposed to be both pleasing (that the research wasn't "compromised") and frustrating (that I couldn't get the full story - not that I wanted it, just that I couldn't get it). As a future researcher myself, albeit with molecules not humans, the chapter brought up many points to think about.

All in all, the book was worth reading, and was loaded with information I am sure I will make use of as I teach my own classes.

    Book Description

This book is the first single authored textbook covering the complete spectrum of surgical management of congenital heart disease. The author, Dr. Richard Jonas, is the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Children's Hospital Boston and the fourth William E Ladd Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Management of congenital heart disease today requires a collaborative effort by a large healthcare team including congenital cardiac surgeons but also pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiac intensivists, pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusion and respiratory technicians and pediatric nurses. All of these individuals need to have a clear understanding of the surgical manipulations that take place in the operating room. This textbook provides beautifully illustrations that clearly depict even the most complex procedures. But this book is much more than an operative atlas. It presents evidence-based medicine that provides numerous scientific citations which explain not only how an operation should be done but in addition when and why it should be done and the outcomes of these interventions.

I found this book very intuitive, illustrations are wonderful, the author insights are exceptional. Although, I'm not a surgeon, this is still very good book for the anesthesiologist to understand the surgical perspective. The only drawback I have is the price which is a little high for a trainee.

    Book Description

Most children and adolescents with high-functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome are victims of bullying at school and in the community. Indeed, some of their unique behaviors and characteristics make many of these children easy targets for chronic, frequent and severe bullying.

This book takes an honest look at the different types of bullying and the actions adults must take to curb bullying, thereby helping to prevent the often lifelong effects of this insidious form of behavior on victims. Practical strategies and solutions at the school, class and individual level are presented.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE if you have a child with Asperger's.......2006-11-20

Rebekah Heinrichs nails this bullying and asperger's. It's truly well written and the IEP goals, student surveys, countless stories that I kept knodding to all make this book a must have. We didn't have ANY goals last year on bullying. Who would have thought you could? We got through all the educational goals including PT, OT, Speech but never did I think of bullying. I didn't think we'd have to worry about it either but I should have listened to our autism specialist who warned us that nearly 100% of Asperger's children are bullied at some point. :( We weren't prepared last year when it started for our son and things went pretty bad. At the end of the school year last year, we had our IEP planning meeting. We copied the IEP goals from Perfect Targets and with a few minor adjustments, put ourselves in a much, MUCH better situation this year. Things aren't perfect for us but we are in a better situation to deal with the school that truly does want to help but really sometimes just doesn't understand our kids. Remember, they look soooo normal but they need so much understanding and compassion and protection too.

Get copies for your school too instead of re-ordering and paying extra for shipping.

The author has a website for support on any issues dealing with asperger's and she sometimes posts herself too!

UPDATE: What is written above was right when we were having some issues and I wasn't sure if we were headed down the same path as last year which was horrible. We've been working with the school (with the team of staff members and ourselves often referring to this book) and the bullying is almost completely gone. It took an open social worker (new one this year) to give this a chance and try something new. I think the IEP containing goals that deal with bullying makes this an issue that cannot be ignored. But I also think that having the staff read this book opened their minds. I could tell they began to realize that you don't always know who instigates and to take the 'blame' out of it and simply work with the children. Last year we felt nothing but blame on our son from the bully's parents, the kids, the staff. This year they kept an open mind and could see more clearly how things get started and get so mixed up so easily. For example: at one occasion a child was bullying my son (had been for a couple weeks) and my son just stayed away from him at recess time. My son played with another child he gets along very well with. The bully at the time went over, tried to break up their play and when it didn't work, he ran the long way around the recess area, went up to my son's aide who was out there and told her that my son was chasing and hurting him. Well, she saw the whole thing, told this boy he was not telling the truth and she told my son "I know you didn't do it." We almost had a party when we heard that one! Last year, my son would have gotten into trouble for chasing the boy because they would have believed him and not paid so much attention at recess or in the halls... PLEASE get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Essential resource for parents and educators.......2006-10-09

As a parent of a teen with Asperger Syndrome and an educator, I cannot stress the importance of this book enough. It is an essential resource that is a "must read" for every educator, administrator and pupil support service provider. My child had been severely harassed in her middle school to the point of school refusal. Every day she would beg me not to send her to "hell". As I read Perfect Targets, I saw my daughter's life in middle school unfold upon its very pages. I plan to gift this book to every elementary, middle and high school administrator in my district with the hope that no other AS child will have to endure such physical or emotional pain.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing for Adults with Asperger's.......2006-10-04

Once again, another book about Asperger Syndrome that focuses almost exclusively on children. This would be a great book for a parent, educator, etc. What people forget, is that children with Asperger's eventually grow up and become adults with Asperger's. It seems that those of us who are adults with this disability have fallen through the cracks. There is very little published to help adults on the autistic spectrum. I experienced bullying not just as a child, but also as an adult in the workforce, to the point where I was forced to quit working altogether.

    5 out of 5 stars advocate mom.......2006-08-22

this is a must have book for parents and even teachers of children with aspergers. this book has been a big help to me and my son. the children diagnosed with aspergers are the most truthful, loving children. but they are also behind their peers in maturity. this book is a tremendous help.

4 out of 5 stars Bullying - Contact as Well as Spectator Sport.......2004-12-31

This is the book that every parent and/or caretaker of a child with Asperger's Syndrome has been waiting for. People with Asperger's, which is a neurobiological condition on the autism spectrum experience social difficulties including communication. Since people with AS often find tacit Social Codes & Rules challenging at best, incomprehensible at worst, they are often targeted by bullies. This book is a good tool of empowerment.

Eliot and Dorothy Parker to Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath and Gwendolyn Brooks.

The power of spoken poetry is at the heart of Poetry Speaks. Poetry is a vocal art, an art meant to be read aloud. Listening to a poem read aloud can be a transforming experience. 5 out of 5 stars Poetry Speaks: Hear Great Poets Read Their Own Work from Tennyson to Plath.......2007-01-28

Once in every 100 years a book is created which captures, both in written and spoken word, the ongoing development of an art form. Poetry Speaks is one such book. Glancing at its cover and size, some people will conclude it to be a 'coffee table book', impressive to look at but hardly ever read. For those persons whoread the smaller print: Hear Great Poets Read their Work from Tennyson to Plath, they experience a pregnant pause ..'Tennyson to Plath'...Tennyson?? It is then book's pages have called and the reader/listener are absorbed into its binding. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Walt Whitman and Robert Browning, were all 19th century poets who died in the late 1880s - 1890s. Yet, because of wax cylinders and the wizardry of Thomas Edison, his desire to capture the human voice, and his love of poetry,1886,he recorded each. Nearly 120 yars later,we are able to listen to these poets reading selections of their own writings. We are invited into the studio, hear their puzzlements, frstrations aw well as triumphant celebration, after recording and hearing, for the first time, their own voices.

Poetry Speaks not only has selections of writings, it includes three CDs. Narrated by Charles Osgood, listeners are escorted through a century of recorded voices and explains how recording itself changed the way poetry was presented when read out load. Within the book's pages, each selected poet is introduced with a brief biography, explanation of th poet's style,as well as how outside events and societal changes and influences shaped both poet and poetry. Some presenters include handwritten copies with lined out deletions and revisions. The study of each poet is an educational find.
The collection is a treasure. Whether you enjoy poetry, find it a bit
intimidating or just what to share something a very special for a very special person...such as yourself, Poetry Speaks will let your spirit soar. You will need to take it from the coffee tabe, open its pages, and read along with its authors.

    5 out of 5 stars Poetry Speaks.......2006-07-15

Fantastic short and to the point essays about the greats of poetry along with the ability to hear them read in their own voices - invaluable asset to the serious poet or poetry fan.

4 out of 5 stars History through an iPod.......2006-05-23

The Poetry Speaks collection features works and readings by 42 of the greatest poets ever.

The book itself is rather weighty (literally), but the essays and poems themselves are organized in such a way as to make even the non-poet appreciate them.

The one complaint I have about the collection is the narrator's unbearable way of trailing off mid-sentence. The "introductions" to the poets and their works were bearable enough--- as I said, the book is very user friendly and is a good intoduction to the world of poetry to those who dont know Donne from Shelley--- however, not saying the whole sentence (whether for theatrical effect or simply to save CD space) leaves listeners frustrated. For example, in the introduction to Robert Browning: "At the end of the historical recording, Browning..." Browning what? We know that Browning apologizes for forgetting the words in "How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix", but with simply "..." Browning could have hit Thomas Edison over the head with a phonograph for all we know.

Mysterious narration is not a good enough reason not to get the book however. The joy of hearing Whitman and Pound and Plath far surpasses even the most irritating introductons.

The solution: import all the audio files onto your computer, delete the introductons, transfer the files onto your iPod and voilà. C'est parfait. Find a nice shady tree to sit under, balance the book on your knees, switch on your iPod and experience history.

5 out of 5 stars I thank my friend for giving me this extraordinary gift.......2005-04-17

What a joy it is to see/read poems and be able to hear the poets read the poems to me, the reader. Poetry is breath and life and as the poet reads, and I read back, the exoerience between the artist and the audience is a unity.

When PBS ran the poetry series, Bill Moyers talked about how when we read a poem from another it's like our breath echoing theirs.

I feel this when I listent to these CDs and read the poems.

We all need more poetry, but we need more poetry both written AND spoken.

    This volume is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry inspires poetry .......2005-02-02

The poets in this volume were listed in another review. I am here simply copying the list. Lord Tennyson; Robert Browning; Walt Whitman; William Butler Yeats; Gertrude Stein; Robert Frost; Carl Sandburg; Wallace Stevens; William Carlos Williams; Ezra Pound; H.D.; Robinson Jeffers; John Crowe Ransom; T.S. Eliot; Edna St. Vincent Millay; Dorothy Parker; e.e. Cummings; Louise Bogan; Melvin B. Tolson; Laura Riding Jackson; Langston Hughes; Ogden Nash; W.H. Auden; Louis MacNeice; Theodore Roethke; Elizabeth Bishop; Robert Hayden; Muriel Rukeyser; William Stafford; Randall Jarrell; John Berryman; Dylan Thomas; Robert Lowell; Gwendolyn Brooks; Robert Duncan; Philip Larkin; Denise Levertov; Allen Ginsberg; Frank O'Hara; Anne Sexton; Etheridge Knight; and Sylvia Plath.
There is a great deal of great and inspiring poetry in this volume. There is also mediocre poetry. And I agree with one other reviewer who said that many of the poets read surprisingly poorly. They all should have listened to Dylan Thomas and learned from him. The power of his voice and the range of his feeling move greatly.
I also was not overwhelmed by the various poetic appreciations. They seemed to me too subjective and did not add greatly to the knowledge of the poets under discussion.
Yet with all the complaining the reading and listening to much of this poetry inspires to poetry. It lifts the mind and heart to another dimension in which there is a depth and a beauty to words which can be found nowhere else.
This anthology has enough of such great poetry to be truly worthwhile.

    Book Description

Born into a time and place where a woman speaks her mind at her peril, and reared as a motherless child by a doting father, Rebekah grew up to be a stunning, headstrong beauty. She was chosen by God for a special destiny.Rebekah leaves her father's house to marry Isaac, the studious young son of the Patriarch Abraham, only to find herself caught up in a series of painful rivalries, first between her husband and his brother Ishmael, and later between her sons Jacob and Esau. Her struggles to find her place in the family of Abraham are a true test of her faith, but through it all she finds her own relationship with God and does her best to serve His cause in the lives of those she loves. In Rebekah, Orson Scott Card has created an astonishing personality, complex and intriguing, and her story will engage your heart as it captures your imagination.

3 out of 5 stars Somehow, left me feeling bleak...........2007-03-27

This version of Rebecca's life left me feeling that some would certainly have a misconstrued picture of who Rebecca was if they were to make the mistake of not actually reading the biblical text. While the story was readable, the writer certainly used creative license in the re-telling of the story. Enjoy this with that knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and engaging.......2007-03-25

This novel by Orson Scott Card about the life of the matriarch Rebekah, is at once moving and engaging.
Unlike some novels, such as Sarah by Marek Halter and The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant, where the women are portayed as worshiping idols and other gods, she is shown as a strong women, devoted to the service of Yahweh since she was little, as are the other matriarchs in the Women of Genesis series.
Card has done a great job of filling in the gaps and bringing the women of the Bible to life.
The digressions from the Biblical account are not major and are, I believe, in the overall spirit of the Biblical account.
As a believing Jew, I did not find anything incongruent or objectionable in this book, although it is written by a Mormon.
Rebekah loses her mother as a baby, and is brought up under by a doting father, by her simple-minded and devoted nurse Deborah. She is also close to her brother Laban.
Her beauty is renowned and she has a headstrong and powerful personality temprered by an innate compassion. When she is seven years old an accident renders her father, Bethuel, deaf. She rejects marriage to a wealthy nobleman Ezbaal, because he worships pagan gods, and not Yahweh, and is by a strange series of events reunited with her mother Akyas, who was sent by Bethuel shortly after Rebekah's birth.

Later she knows, through G-D, when Eliezer meets her at the well, that it is her destiny to go with him and marry Isaac, and go's with Isaac to dwell at the home of his father Abraham at Kirjath-arba.
The love between Rebekah and Isaac is great but it is strained by the rivalry with his brother Ishmail, and the domineering nature of Isaac's father,. Abraham. She falls pregnant after twenty years, and in a dream is visited by her great ancestors Seth, the son of Noah, and Eber, and several others of whom she knew less. They inform her she will give birth to twins " You have two great men inside you, two mighty nations, two ways of life, and the one will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger".
Not long after the twins Jacob and Esau are born, their different natures become apparent. Jacob is good natured and obedient, while Esau is wild and wilfful. Rebekah favours Jacob and Isaac favours Esau. Esau hunts and kills the animals, while Jacob tends and loves them. A powerful anecdote is related to show their different natures, when they are five years old and and Jacob weeps because Esau throws stones at a puppy until it is blinded.
They grow up and finally Esau shows his true waywardness, bloodthirsty caharacter and his disinterest in the word of G-D, and he marries two Hittite women.
The book draws to a close with the famous events where Esau sells his birthrigh to Jacob for a mess of pottage, and where Jacob tricks Isaac into giving him the birthright instead of Esau. But according to the author's interpretation, Isaac really knows it is Jacob, but G-D tels him that indeed Jacob is worthy of the blessing.
The dialogues show the conflicts prevalent in the narrative.
It is written in modern language, and should bring the narratives alive to the readers.
I look forward to reading the other Women of Genesis novels.

    3 out of 5 stars A Little Too Fictional.......2007-01-12

I have taken a while to warm up to Card's writing as I don't enjoy some of his content, and so I read this one a bit apprehensively.

Overall, I found Rebekah to be an interesting character, but don't agree with several of his interpretations of other biblical figures--namely his protrayal of both Isaac and Abraham. Up to Rebekah's move to Canaan to be Isaac's wife, I found his story to be an interesting (though possible) prologue to Rebekah's part in the scriptures, but once he protrayed Abraham as prefering Ishmael's physical strength to Isaac's quiet personality (a personality Card gives him, IMHO), and sets up Isaac as doubting his own worth, I no longer enjoyed it. I also didn't agree with his interpretation of how Abraham's almost sacrifice of Isaac influenced their relationship in the future, nor of Abraham's supposed "death grip" on the sacred record he'd been preserving.

Card's ability to create believable female characters has greatly improved over the years, though, and I must say that I'm glad that they no longer seem to fall into cookie cutter shapes. Rebekah herself is protrayed by Card as a strong, self-aware woman who trusts in her faith in God to lead her to where she can serve Him best. Her ability to stick to her convictions and to help lead her family by strengthening her father are some of my favorite aspects to this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff!!.......2006-09-26

Rebekah is best known as the wife of Isaac and daughter-in-law of Abraham, the father of God's chosen nation. Her story is found in the latter chapters of Genesis. She is a daughter of a landowner, named Bethuel and by a variety of circumstances, becomes responsible for most of the inner workings of her father's household. She is taught to read and write, which is rare for men and almost never seen in women. She boldly declines a marriage to a rich suitor and prays to be married to a man of faith...a man that worships the God of Abraham, and not idols. Even after God answers her prayer and she marries Isaac, life is not easy, dealing with her father-in-law and patriarch, Abraham and especially her sons, Jacob and Esau and the issue of the birthright and privilege of carrying on the stories of God's works. Rebekah, a woman who, by the day's standards should be meek and submissive, is strong, outspoken and is instrumental in God's work.

This is a very romantic story, filling in gaps of scripture with a plausible, everyday tale of a girl that is devoted to her God, her family and to her hope of being a strong woman in a man's world. The author paints a realistic picture of life in early biblical times. Marriages, politics, travel, customs. Rebekah is a true hero in that she follows God's will against the times, against powerful men and even her own family.
While conjecturing about a biblical character and "filling in the gaps" of their lives may seem risky (unyielding fundamentalism comes to mind), I find that the exercise of speculating about someone's life in ancient times can be educational and romantic, especially if done well, which this book seems to be. The situations and events (specifically those not written about in the Bible) that happen to and around Rebekah are realistic and seem to reflect the times.

The author, in his forward, opines that there is an inconsistency or two in scripture and he uses this "fact" to make his story flow. I find this a bit presumptuous, but also understand that some biblical facts, especially dry historical ones, can often be incomplete or misunderstood without knowledge of the history.

I would recommend Rebekah to those who have ties with Christianity, whether practicing or just curious, especially those that love to read a good, clean romance or hero tale. It is not meant to be a persuasive work that tries to bring the reader to convert to Christianity, but merely shows several characters' commitment and relationship with God.

Orson Scott Card is the author of several science fiction tales dealing with future earth and alternate pasts of North America. He focuses a lot of his creative energy into characters that are children or women. He does not disappoint. Rebekah is the second "Woman of Genesis" that he has studied, preceded by Sarah and followed by Rachel.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-10

I must admit, I really have enjoyed the Women of Genesis series. Some might think you need a belief OR that you will be preached to if you read these books, but that is far from true. As a student of many religions I appreciated the fact that Card, with such strong personal beliefs, didn't feel the need to use these books to "convert" the reader.

I kept saying to myself "Wow!"

This is a good story, along the lines of the old oral storytellers. It makes you think, and I loved the fact that I could get angry at the foolishness of the characters that I grew to like so much.

    5 out of 5 stars Access 2003 & Relational databases.......2006-12-30

If you don't understand anything at all about databases, this book speaks to you in PLAIN ENGLISH!! Every book I've ever picked up, has always been in computer speak. This one uses every day problems, situations, and examples to show you how to use it, when to use it, & where to use this software. I read a ton of computer books & this one so far, surpasses all the others when it comes to understanding relational databases . . . it's written in English!

Read it cover to cover. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter and for the first time, you'll understand databases and what all the fuss is about. It's the one I recommend to my students, family, and friends when they seem to have that large question mark looming over their heads.

This book removes the mystery from databases, especially Access, which can be rather daunting. And while removing that mystery from Access, it gives you a little insight to Filemaker Pro as a database & you can see how the two software programs differ from each other while still being databases.

Don't let this book pass you buy. If you see it, get it & read it because you'll finally understand what's been going on in your class!

Highly recommended for people who need to take a class in dB (databases) and don't know the first thing about it. This is YOUR book!!

After reading this book, you'll wish there was one just like it for Visual Basic and some of those other computer books!! ROTFLOL!! Buy it, you'll definitely like it!!
