Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I am dreaming of maple syrup.......2007-10-08

I just finished a 30 plus day cleanse. All I had was a brew of maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and water. The hardest part of the cleanse was not hunger. What I found hardest was the monotony of the above mentioned beverage. For the first 10 days it tasted fine. For the next 10 days it tasted less fine. For the 10 days after that it tasted horrible.

Why did I do the cleanse in the first place? I have bladder cancer. And as anybody knows who has cancer, there is no shortage of suggestions about how to cure cancer. Suggestions come from friends, family members, casual acquaintances, and even total strangers who overhear conversations. The suggestions range from the helpfully obvious, such as, "You should probably not make Doritos the mainstay of your diet," to the near cruel, "If you loved yourself more, you would be cured."

Now, before I continue, I want anyone who has read this far to know that I posted this review in my blog also. One of the reasons I am writing reviews is because it was suggested as a good way to market my book, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." I want to make every keystroke, so to speak, count. One thing I have learned from cancer is to make each move count. There may be no tomorrow. Also, I believe in full disclosure.

Anyway, like many people with cancer, I tend not to talk about it because I get tired of the suggestions. But two friends of mine repeatedly suggested this cleanse. They are both advocates of alternative healing. And, even though I find myself excusing myself to run urgent errands whenever they talk about my eating habits, I love and respect them both.

What sold me on the cleanse was what one of my friends said. We were driving in the car in the mountains near her home, chatting about this and that. Suddenly the tone of her voice changed, and I knew I would hear something about a healthy lifestyle. "That cleanse we were talking about the other day, your body will begin to digest itself, and the theory is that the cancer cells will be digested, literally."

She had me. I am not a scientist. But that made sense. I had pretty much decided that Bill must die, Bill being the cancer. So, off I went on the cleanse, pretty much feeling like an old-west, quasi-Buddhist gunslinger. My body wasn't big enough for me and the cancer. One of us had to go. Either I would starve or the cancer would starve. By day 20, people were really beginning to be impressed. By day 30, I was being deified. But, honestly, it wasn't that hard. I'm sure that those fellows who climbed that little mountain felt the same way. Mt Everest, I think it was.

I had been aiming for 40 days, but I quit on day 33. And the reason I quit was because I found my 40-day goal becoming a little bit of an obsession. To quit, believe it or not, took much more will than to continue. As I said, I am a quasi-Buddhist, if there is such a thing, and I practice relinquishing strong attachments. I am, as a rule, much happier when I am not ruled by my attachments. And the cleanse was quickly becoming my master. I was no longer doing the cleanse; it was doing me.

You can find many variations of The Master Cleanse, usually for sale, on the internet. My own advice is to listen to your body. Do not get stubborn. On the other hand, the first three days really is the hardest; although, day 29 was hard too. The key is to drink plenty of lemonade, as it is called, because it will keep you from getting hungry. If you're worried about doing something so drastic, then see your doctor. But do not be surprised if your doctor looks at you as though you are a new age, hippie, weirdo when you mention The Master Cleanse. When I investigated this cleanse on the internet, I found only negative comments about it from the medical establishment.

But, as my mother used to say, "The proof is in the pudding." Is the cancer gone? I do not know. Nor, will I until my next exam. But I know I lost weight, a lot of weight. And I know I have more energy than I have had in a long, long time. I feel great. I'm planning on doing it again soon. But first I need to implement a healthy diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and Doritos. And for some reason I want some pudding. Maybe chocolate pudding. Or maybe custard. How about rice pudding?

Blessings,

John C. Conley

I felt great putting this into practice but I was still hungry. However, I did notice I had a lot more energy. The lemonade tastes awesome.

The Master Cleanser Diet information is an excellent source for promotion of good health and feeling good. I highly recommend this boook to everyone. The diet is simple and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Great results.......2007-09-10

I've been on this program for over a week now and feel great! Not to mention that I've lost a lot of weight, althoug that could only be temporary... My skin seems to be smoother and I have the great feeling of being light and well. I must say that it can be difficult to stay on the program and it requires a lot of will power.

I do like the taste of cayenne pepper in my drinks. It makes them more pleasant to swallow ... If you know someone with a serious disease or addiction make them try this program -- it should bring good results. You will be surprised! Another really GREAT book with all kind of internal cleansing methods is "Can We Live 150 Years?". In fact these two books should be sold in one package.

1 out of 5 stars Why is it taboo to criticize this book?.......2007-09-10

I've run into a number of people spurred by the promise of quick weight loss or the belief that they're infested with "toxins" to try this radical "diet." What's astonishing to me is how disinclined people have been so far to question how this motley array of kitchen detritus -- water, lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper -- came to assemble itself, or how this perplexing combination of ingredients is specifically supposed to flush out these supposed "toxins."

Reading the book, my first reaction was to wonder how such a text has gotten as far as it has. It only makes sense when I consider my anecdotal experience that it's really the recipe that has travelled far and wide, while the rambling explanation behind it has, to its benefit, remained rather obscure. The author of this terse manifesto of folk medicine wastes no time in proclaiming that his peculiar lemonade (it may have more aptly been Kool-Aid) will cure any disease. He further proclaims, without evidence, that all germs are "our friends," that fungi help us rid our bodies of "toxins," and that asking for the blessing of a meal will raise its "vibrations." Other claims are very easily checked, and should smell fishy even to the casual observer: that lemons and maple syrup provide all the nutrition you need is but one example.

Practitioners of this "diet" flutter with amazement at the results, vindicated that their weight loss that has confirmed the validity of the science behind it: as if there is somehow a correct way to starve yourself.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2007-08-23

Max Barry is truly something else. I love his writing style, his humor, and his incredible ability to tell a great story. This book is very witty, but at the same time frighteningly ironic. I cannot wait for the next read by Barry; none have disappointed thus far!

5 out of 5 stars An exciting and entertaining story.......2007-08-15

One thing all Max Barry stories have in common is that they keep my interest. I don't put his books on hold the way I do with books by so many other authors. Syrup held my attention.

Syrup also kept me entertained with its witty satire of corporate culture -- another signature of Max Barry. Anyone who has worked in a corporate environment will commiserate with our protagonist and get a good laugh.

The books packs multiple highs and lows, and takes you on a roller coaster ride, all while endearing Scat (the main character) in your heart as a lovable loser in a world of surreal characters.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, fast-paced, & fizzy!.......2007-08-07

Scat almost gets rich developing a new product for Coca Cola, but his idea gets stolen! A very light read, but you care about the characters. Longer review available at my website the Impatient Reader. See My Amazon profile for URL.

1 out of 5 stars dull, dull, dull.......2007-06-25

I looked at several customer reviews before reading this book. Ick! Did they get it wrong or what? This book is awful.

Let's start with the pretentious, stupid name of the lead female character, 6. Now, ha, ha, that's funny. And, then there's her competitor, @. Gee, that's hilarious also.

Interspersed throughout the book are marketing "rules" that are supposed to provide profundity. Duh. If you don't know this stuff already, you probably also have difficulty walking and chewing gum at the same time.

Reading this book was kind of like taking the bus to Baton Rouge--endless and slightly sickening.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent satire of consumer culture told in bite-size pieces........2007-05-17

A couple of my friends have been raving about Jennifer Government by Max Barry, which is soon to be a movie. I read Barry's first book, Syrup. It's the story of Scat , a young would-be marketing executive, and his million-dollar idea for a new soda. He convinces Coca Cola to bring it out, but on the way to market his idea is stolen by his room-mate, Sneaky Pete. So Scat teams up with Six, a director of new products for Coke, to wreak his revenge. It's an excellent satire of consumer culture told in bite-size pieces. How Barry was able to use Coca Cola as the framework for his novel without being sued is a mystery to me.

5 out of 5 stars Naturally sweet.......2001-08-01

This book gives information about alternatives to refined sugar. It is a very good book with excellent recipes (from simple cookies -the chocolate shortbread sounds terrific- to cakes and ice creams. But, something important, be ready to buy or order (there is a page of sources. Fantastic!) "Sucanat" or "maple sugar", "rice syrup" or "maple syrup". Because if you do not have these on hand, you cannot try the recipes. There are also some recipes with honey, an ingredient that is easier to find.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Enjoy.......2001-01-10

Most of the cookbooks I own come with the appliances I buy. This book is an exception. I enjoy the flavours of maple syrup and honey and was delighted to find a cookbook that caters to my tastes. I find the recipes easy to follow. I'm not an expert in the kitchen. Beside each recipe is a margin where the author has put some notes and room enough for you to enter any notes you may want to as well. At the end of some recipes are tips that give you a clue as to what to expect if you've never had the experience of, "Carmelizing Maple Syrup", for example. Another tip I really liked was the suggestion of using a variety of apples in my apple pie. That was a tasty surprise. The Pastry recipe, which she credits to Julia Child, is the best I've ever had. If you are a chocolate lover, try Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake. It's heavenly. I find the author's approach to the reader to be like a personal tutorial. It's like she's right there watching over and encouraging your every move. I haven't tried all the recipes yet but I'm getting a little braver as I tackle the standards: date squares, brownies, pies, and cookies. Thank you Carrie Davis for the "Naturally Sweet Baker".

5 out of 5 stars Yummmy!.......2001-01-10

As a professed chocoholic I was prepared only to savour the chocolate recipes in Carrie Davis's The Naturally Sweet Baker. But to be fair, I didn't restrict myself to those, although there is an ample supply. And I have to admit, that Davis's Maple Mousse is just about the nicest dessert I have ever made or eaten! And my guests raved about it too.

Of course, Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake was a real winner as well. This cookbook is a great resource for information about alternatives to refined sugar in your baking, and an absolute treasure trove of recipes. Check it out for some fun, adventure and delicious treats!

marriage and motherhood before risking all of her earthly and emotional possessions as she answered a calling in her heart that continued to say, "There is more for you in life." Creating a legacy for her family, she brought her great-grandmother's (a slave) syrup recipe to life as Michele Foods. The syrup became a metaphor for the birth of the person Michelle became on her journey of building a business with few resources and little knowledge of the product or the food industry.

4 out of 5 stars I just finished reading the book.......2006-01-29

I recommend this book to individuals thinking about starting a business or undertaking some other life-changing event. Ms. Hoskins learned and shared a lot of important lessons about business and human motivation.

4 out of 5 stars An Epiphany Moment.......2006-01-13

This book is an excellent example of the trials and tribulations of a woman that is committed to success.Through Michele's setbacks she never gave up and as a result has become one of the most successful black women in America. She has inspired me to pursue my dreams of entrepreneurship and in the process, given me an "how to" manual to get started. Business plan, business plan, business plan! The read was slow, yet exciting because I held an interest in the next step. Only criticism that I have with the book was the ending. I really expected it to end with more of a bang! However, I do recommend it for reading for anyone that wants to learn how to start a business from scratch.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Knowledge!.......2005-04-16

I just finished reading Michele Hoskins' book and I absolutely LOVED IT. It was informative, empowering, and spiritually uplifting. I feel it's a must-read for all women. I hated getting to the end of the book. This book is dripping with needed wisdom. Get it for your personal library...Thank you Michele Hoskins for proving that nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about starting from scratch.......2005-04-13

This book is the most inspirational book that I have read so far. She is brutally honest and gave invaluable information. She shares her trail and error endeavers. She talks about her mistakes candidly, and without reservation. There are no punches pulled in this book. There are many things that you are unaware of that Michele makes it clear that you need to know.

Michele has really paid her dues. From start to finish she lets you know what she had to do to make it work. She shows that if you don't give up, and are willing to do what it takes to make your dreams come true, you can make it. Many people don't want to do things the hard way, but Michele shows you what can happen when you roll up your sleeves and keep working until you see it through.

This is not a business guide, this is a book about how Michele made her dream a reality with enough common sense advice, and tips to see you through. She was just smart enough to share how she did it so that others want have such a hard road to go.

I recommend this book to anyone really wants to know what it's like to start from "scratch".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Step by step guide for everybody.......2007-01-11

It doesnt matter if never made maple syrup and you are a newbie like me, or you are a pro. These simple techniques will explain to you how and why make excellent maple syrup. Lots and lots of good advice from somebody that really knows the sugarin process in the backyard. This also means that you can make your own syrup without spending a fortune but buying simple little things or reusing everyday use things for the whole process.
Its more of a dialogue of your grandpa teaching you than a guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2006-12-26

We have a 300+ year old sugar maple in our back yard. For the past few years we have tapped it each spring and boiled down the sap for the best maple syrup! This wonderful little "how-to guide" has given us a lot of pointers and info we were not aware of before. Easy to read and understand too. Just a nice little reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book........2004-10-02

I remember fondly the early Michigan spring from my childhood, helping my father collect sap. This more than anything fueled my desire to make my own syrup. This book, Rink Mann's "Backyard Sugarin'" is an excellent book to get you off without breaking your back or your bank account. The author has a delightful writing style that is thoroughly engrossing. The book is well illustrated, full of ideas and rock solid on exactly when, how and what to tap, and exactly how to process all that sap. I highly recomend this book. Even if you don't live in sugar country you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know -- just add trees!.......2003-03-19

This is the do-it-yourself book that got me started on that sweet rite of spring -- making my own maple syrup. The author's emphasis is on how to do it efficiently and very cheaply, using easy-to-find materials you can scrounge yourself. If you have the trees to tap, by all means get this book! (Hint: they don't have to be the sugar maple species. Try other maples as well. I get great syrup from box elders, which I considered "trash trees" until I learned they are in the maple family. Now I treasure them like gold.)

My own sugaring set-up is total simplicity: just some old refrigerator grates set on top of cinder blocks, heated with odd scraps of wood that others have thrown away at construction sites, etc. The sap is boiled down in flat baking pans, then finished off on the stove inside. Except for the initial expense to buy some professional spiles for tapping (you can make those, too, but I'm a failure as a tinsmith), I have spent ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the 3-4 gallons of syrup we make each year. Not a bad return for a book that I cost me less than ten bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to ultra cheap sugaring!.......1999-02-02

This book has an overarching philosophy - keep it simple and keep it cheap! The authors describe everything you need to know and stress not having to pay for anything you can get for free. This quest for free stuff that works well is one of the pleasures of hobby sugaring. Well written descriptions of all the processes. Lots of photos. Reading it makes you wish the sap would start flowing NOW! Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars great book for kids and adults.......2003-05-24

This is a great book. It is an authentic source children's book teaching the harvesting of maple syrup and sugar. Porky White, who the book features, is an elder sho has passed away. This book captures his story of sugar making. No romantic Indian images here. Real people participating in the traditional way of life. I think this is a great book for kids and adults. Would be good in the classroom.

Endorsed by Rosemary Gladstar, renowned herbalist and author of Herbal Healing for Women, this book of "homespun alchemy" bursts with easy recipes for medicinal wines, herbal oils, salves, tonics, syrups, throat drops--you name it. From the guidelines for gathering medicinal plants to instructions for tincture preparation, Joyce Wardwell conveys her love and respect for herbs. She comes from a long line of herbalists: her great-great-grandmother Jane learned the herbal craft from the Ojibway in Minnesota; Jane's mother was condemned for witchcraft and her husband was hung for it during the Salem, Massachusetts, Witch Trials. But there's nothing to fear from the Remedy Book: recipes are made primarily from the 25 most common herbs, and instructions are so clear they're nearly foolproof. The flu, insomnia, colic, menopause, and sore muscles are all covered. Any household with children will find the "herbal home medicine chest" invaluable, with treatments for everyday ailments such as colds and coughs, burns, bug bites, bruises, and strains. The publisher, Storey Publications, is known for its practicality and environmental awareness, and the book is printed on lovely cream-colored recycled paper.

I have really enjoyed this book. It is an easy to understand book and it is practical, which is something I really appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Very basic Herbal.......2007-06-06

This is a very good, but basic herbal. It is great for someone starting out, and if this isn't in depth enough for you, or after this book, i would certainly recommedThe Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual James Green's The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Very Best - Homespun Herbalism for EveryWoman.......2006-12-14

I have to say that I was rather shocked to read another review's comment that many of the recipes in this book were beyond the beginner's grasp.... This has not been my experience at all. I use this book for most all of my students and have had great success with it. It's simple, totally down to earth and gives a very firm grasp of old fashioned downhome herbalism (the best kind in my not so humble opinion). I love her focus on 25 very common (and often overlooked herbs) that almost any of us can access no matter where we are. I also love her rather unfashionable uses of homemade herbal wines and vinegars, that are a fabulous and gentle choice for the home herbalist (not to mention cheap and practical). She also focuses on using food as medicine and lifestyle as medicine, which are of course, really the only medicine that work in the long run. Joyce does a really lovely job of making the best of herbal medicine accessable and joyous. Of the probably hundreds of herb books I've read, this remains a classic for me, easily in my top ten best herb books.

I would also recommend books by Susun Weed, Juliette Levy, Gail Faith Edwards, Judith Berger, Stephen Buhner, Michael Moore and Matthew Wood for more great writing in a similair earth loving vein.

4 out of 5 stars perfect for a novice like me.......2006-08-08

This book is not the only book you will own but it is the first one I bought to learn some of the basics. If you want an overview of some of the most useful and available herbs this is what you want.
I like it for it's down-to-earth advice and easy to understand (and do) instructions.
I also purchased Readers Digest "Herbs" which is great for the photography of herbs so I can identify them in the wild.

This is a fun book. Easy to read, simple recipes that even I might be able to follow and loads of ideas and information. One of the best herb books I've seen.

    Book Description

In New England Vermonters will be welcoming its state alphabet book, titled M is for Maple Syrup. With colorful pages that focus the spotlight on the flora and fauna specific to Vermont (and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream), the book utilizes a two-tiered educational format where the rhyming verse appeals to younger readers the substantive expository text proves an engaging tool for older students. In Vermont this fall, as it always is, L is for Lake Champlain and R is for the Red Clover, H is for Hermit Thrush and D is for Dairy.

5 out of 5 stars More than an alphabet book.......2007-09-04

My 5 yr. old granddaughter requested this book for her birthday! When it can, I, of course, read it through. I like the double format very much. For a young reader there are simple explanations and for a more advanced reader there is more information. It definitely isn't your run-of-the-mill alphabet book. I'm will certainly give her more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!.......2003-03-31

I am an elementary school teacher and found this book to be a great way to introduce Vermont to my students as part of our fifty states theme unit. We've had fun learning new facts about each of the states and this book, as part of the Discover America Alphabet Series, is an ideal way to share the diversity of our states, their traditions and to learn interesting facts about each one. The pictures in this book are vivid and are great for sharing a special viewpoint of Vermont. The facts are interesting and encourage and promote a child's interest in the state. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Discover America.......2003-02-28

I ordered the series, Discover America State By State for our primary school library. When the books arrived, I couldn't give them up! I had to own them myself! So I paid for this set and ordered the second set for the library. The publishing company claims the books are intended for children ages 4-8 years. However, my husband and I were awed at the beautiful artwork representing each state and the wealth of information to be gained, some obvious, some very trivial but nonetheless interesting. I teach second grade. Many of my students have never been outside our state. What a fantastic way to introduce them to the beauty, contrasts, and wonder of our very own nation! I could spend the whole school year teaching language arts, social studies, and science using this set as my textbook.

    Book Description

In the month of the Maple Sugar Moon, the snow's too wet for angel making, icicles rain from Grandpa's porch roof, and something is stirring in the woods. It's sugarbush spring--time to tap the trees, prepare the bottles, then gather round the cook fire to eat chicken and dumplings, roast marshmallows, and tell stories while the cold sap heats through, thickens, and boils to make syrup.

Chall's timeless story and Daly's glowing paintings invite children to share in the pleasure of making maple syrup--a process that's the same today as it was two hundred years ago.In the month of the Maple Sugar Moon, icicles rain from Grandpa's porch roof and something is stirring in the woods. Jim Daly is a wonderful illustrator. The pictures actually come alive on the page, you can visualize what the words are actually saying. Children, as well as adults, can learn about the trees; how big they have to be before you should tap them and why doesn't sap run all of the time, etc. The only thing that is not true is the temperature that the syrup is drawn off from the rig is not the same temperature you would need for sugar on snow. This picture gave my kids false ideas to try at our sugar house. Overall though this is a wonderful book.

My family has made maple syrup for years. Reading this book I felt like I was back in the woods gathering sap and could almost smell the syrup as it boiled in the pan and taste its sweetness. The pictures are beautiful and the information right on the mark. As syrup making is a family event I will have to buy copies for all of my family.
