Book Description

The final prequel will have the Rapture three-quarters of the way through the book and then following characters such as Irene and Raymie (and others) up to heaven and being able to see events in the Tribulation from heaven’s perspective. The book will alternate between focusing on events on earth immediately after the Rapture (covering lots of things the authors wished they could have covered in the original volumes) and focusing on characters in heaven and how they view the chaotic events on earth. Now available in trade paper.

5 out of 5 stars Just one more book in the all-encompassing, enthralling, and utterly absorbing Left Behind Series.......2007-09-14

From the very first letter of the alphabet that my eyes looked upon inside this series of books, until the very last period of the very last sentence, I was hooked. Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Biblically sound, theatrically entertaining, and brilliantly written, the Left Behind books will inspire you to dig into God's word and take the pieces of news from your T.V. screen and match them right smack-dab up with the prophecies of the Bible. Your hair will stand up, your heart will race, and you will find yourself helplessly caught in the suspense. Once you finish one of these books, you will desperately race to your computer screen or your local library to pick up the next one!

4 out of 5 stars The best of the 3 prequels, by far!.......2007-09-10

I picked this book up expecting to be disappointed; however, that was far from what actually happened! I feel that Mr's LaHaye and Jenkins redeemed themselves with this book, after the travesties that were the first two prequels and Kingdom Come. The Rapture actually drew me back into the Left Behind series--I literally couldn't put it down--and I found it moving in a way the aforementioned installments completely lacked.

I definitely suggest that even if you disliked the first two prequels, you read this one. Although it does get a bit annoying in that, toward the end, it repeats a lot of what happened in the beginning of the original Left Behind, if you have not read the first book in the series in quite a while the repetition really isn't so bad.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2007-07-22

I have not yet read this book because my son is reading it first, but if it is as good as the rest of this series, it is bound to be great.

3 out of 5 stars Big disappointment.......2007-07-10

This third prequel to the Left Behind series moves the story up to the time of "Left Behind," the first in the original series. Jenkins is creative in his description of what life is like in heaven, but this novel is extremely padded - he could have covered the same ground in 100 pages less, and probably should have.

1 out of 5 stars an inconvenient truth.......2007-10-09

Jerusalem Countdown is Hagee's jeremiad against Iran. We (the US and Israel) need to "take down" Iran before Iran "takes down" the US and Israel. Hagee is serving up baloney, plain and simple.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the Iranian government is every bit as evil as Hagee contends. Hagee's casus belli against the Iranians is that they are working to get a nuclear weapon. What Hagee conveniently omits from Jerusalem Countdown's 270 pages is that Israel already has 200-300 nuclear weapons, as well as multiple ways to deliver them, including submarines purchased from Germany. Iranians may have used "suicide waves" against Iraq, and they may use "suicide bombers" against Israel and others, but I have yet to see a government intent upon its own "regimicide".

Hagee not only omits the fact that Israel is the regional nuclear powerhouse, but also that the Israelis have biological and chemical weapons capability. Any act of massive aggression (e.g. a full scale attack) upon Israel by its hostile neighbors would unleash a rash of plagues not seen in the region since Pharaoh and Moses squared off.

And what of Pakistan - our "ally?" Pakistan is already a nuclear power, and Gen Musharraf's hold on power is none too secure. What happens if Pakistan is taken over by a virulently anti-US regime? Do we go after their nukes, and mix it up with their population of 170 million?

Hagee does not say; this too, would spoil his plot.

5 out of 5 stars A must Read!!!!.......2007-10-07

I have not quite finished the book, but its hard to put down. So much truth is being told finally and the outlook for this country or for the entire world is bleak. It is true that Jerusalem is the capital of the world and until peace comes in Israel, this world will continue on a downward spiral. Finally the truth is told about who really killed Jesus Christ. It was not the Jews!!!! This book is excellent and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to know the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Very Revealing!.......2007-09-13

4 out of 5 stars jewish legacy.......2007-09-06

Any serious Christian, or anyone who wants to know the history of the Jewish struggle, needs to read John Haggee's book, Jerusalem Countdown.
If you have ever thought that the Jews were not in sync with the Christians because of their stand on Jesus as the Messiah, then you need to know the truth. Jesus was a Jew. that is our legacy as Christians. Paul was a Jew but spent his life making Gentiles and Jews in to believers in Jesus Christ.
We can no longer say that Israel and the Jewish world is not our concern.

I'll be sincere.I didn't read this book. And I don't want to read it.About ten years ago, I tried to read another book, from the same author. The book was nothing more than a trash.
Thinking there was possibility that the author had changed, I watched his interview on CNN some days ago.The interview was about this book. And the author if had changed anything, became even worse.
Please, don't waste your time, money or perhaps even your mind, following the fool ideas from this trash-book.

3 out of 5 stars Stick with NASA.......2006-07-06

A very well written book by a very intelligent man. However, I am not a corporate manager or am I interested in corporate management. The first half the book was very good; about growing up, West Point and NASA but the second half of the book was Mr. Borman blaming the unions for the failure of Eastern Airlines. I don't care about the failure of Eastern Airlines and I don't buy a book written by a great astronaut to find out why it failed. I buy books by astronauts to learn about the trials, tribulations and successes in one of the greatest eras of American history, early space exploration. I don't feel this book was an autobiograhy of an astronaut but the purging of a very bitter and disallusioned man after a failure of grand proportions. If you want to learn about the problems of management versus unions this would be a great read, if not, stop at the begining of the Eastern Airlines debacle. Mr. Borman was and is an American hero who should be celebrated for what he gave his country but nobody cares about Charlie Bryan. I had to constantly keep reminding myself this book was written in 1988, not 1968 or 2006. My copy of this book is an Easton Press Limited Edition gold bound series, numbered and autographed by Mr. Borman. I will always cherish this book but I will not read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Story By a Great Leader.......2004-08-31

An interesting tale from beginning to end. This is a frank account of Mr. Borman's life in and out of the astronaut business and beyond. About half of the book is Borman's life before and during his tenure in the space program, the rest is his experience with Eastern Airlines which is very interesting. The tale of how the unions destroyed one of the largest U.S. air carriers is sad but perhaps the perspective of Borman is a little bit skewed. This book however is still a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Honest, Common Sense, Ethical, No Frills Management Style.......2002-08-06

One reason I picked up Countdown at Half-Price Books was because I remember Frank Borman doing commercials for Eastern Airlines when I was a kid. Although I expected more of his book to be about the Apollo days, I was by no means disappointed. This book is actually three books: One about Borman at West Point, the other about Borman in the Air Force, and the one about Borman at Eastern Airlines. The one I liked the best was about Eastern Airlines.

Like Frank Borman, I am an engineer myself (I grew up on NASA's back gate) and I really enjoyed his "tell it like it is" and get "back to basics approach" at Eastern. When Borman became President of Eastern in 1975, he got rid of the private jets, the fancy cars, the plush office furniture, and said "get to work." He also streamlined the middle-management and got rid of the "deadwood" and implemented a lot more "common sense." He thought Eastern buying SST's would be ludricrous on the Miami to New York route (because they would have to begin descent too soon), got rid of planes that were fuel inefficient (especially after looking at maintenance logs and finding that repairs were costing three times of what new planes were), and I don't know of any corporate president that had enough class to negiotiate leasing four Airbus aircraft at no cost. Leasing Airbuses was an awesome and risky move that paid off. Several airlines today use Airbus (Northwest, USAir, United) and Borman helped pave the way for America to buy these. Being a pilot and an engineer, Borman would even fly some of these planes himself. These are three examples of why engineers today are needed in higher management positions.

Borman also made the people of Eastern unite after he became President. He would visit them at airports and fly on planes with them, looking at "lets all work together and accomplish the mission. We have to earn our wings every day." Borman was always honest with his fellow employees about what was going on (no bulls--- )and followed through with "Duty, Honor, Country". Eastern Airlines profited more from 1976 to 1980 under Borman's leadership. What killed Eastern in my opininion was Airline Deregulation and the unions fighting against Eastern, primarily the IAM. Borman tells much of this story.

One thing that threw me off as I read this was how many airlines were in business when I was a kid that aren't there anymore (Braniff, Piedmont, Pan Am, People's Express, Air Florida, etc.) I know Braniff was an example of executives taking care of their own interests (fancy cars, meals, penthouse office suites, etc.) Frank Borman always had his head and his heart in the right place -EASTERN. I learned a great deal from Countdown-we need more executive officers like Frank Borman.

4 out of 5 stars Frequent Flier Dilemma.......2002-07-09

I have yet to see a better and more credible depiction of the upside/downside of astronaut persona. In his modest and understated way Frank Borman describes his career through the military, the astronaut program, and the private business sector. A genuinely honest man who embodied the best values of middle America, Borman commanded two of the most visible and critical flights of the early manned space program: the epic endurance flight Gemini 7 in 1965 and the stunning circumlunar Apollo 8 adventure of Christmas Eve 1968. Widely respected in NASA and government circles, he was selected to lead the investigation of the Apollo fire which killed his comrades Grissom, White, and Chafee. He was, in every respect, an upright military man who embraced the challenge of the space race with dogged tenacity.

So why, with every page, does the reader feel like he is moving inexorably toward a train wreck? Perhaps because Borman's candor compels him to chronicle the downside of his single-minded determination and doggedness. It is hard to say if the author intended to give us this psychological two-edged sword, or whether it is simply the fruit of honesty. In either case the clues are there: with every career choice, with every renewed commitment to NASA, Borman etched his name on the honor roll of American space heroes. And, in the process, insulated himself from family and society, with painful consequences.

Borman's personal world begins to unravel, ironically, at the time of his greatest triumph, the Apollo 8 mission to the moon. His wife Susan, already stretched thin by years as a dutiful military wife in the spotlight and totally unnerved by the Apollo 1 fire, drifted into the murky world of alcoholism. Borman admits that, totally absorbed as he was with the Apollo Program, he was completely out of touch with her drinking, relieved that at least his wife was not using prescription tranquilizers, then in vogue among astronaut wives. [Andrew Chaikin's "A Man on the Moon" describes Susan Borman's problems during Apollo 8 in much greater detail than Borman could bring himself to describe.]

Sadly unaware of the unfolding tragedy at home, Borman retired from the Air Force and proceeded to make the grand-daddy of all bad career choices, particularly considering the choices at hand. It is not clear from the text whether the author truly understood the complexities of Eastern Airlines' financial difficulties, or the character of the people he would need to do business with. Borman does concede that he knew next to nothing about unions, which would be his undoing at Eastern along with deregulation and a sagging economy. Despite his earnestness and hard work-and no one worked harder-the book ends at February 23, 1986, the night of the Eastern bankruptcy, a broken ex-astronaut crying in his wife's arms.

It is a troubling ending. It is also a reflection of the conundrum of the race to the moon. The United States would never have overtaken the Russians in the space race without men like Borman who sacrificed everything for the goal of national success. But this work reveals another side of the space race: how the race to the moon collected men like Borman, took those assets of steely self-determination, and turned them against the astronauts themselves. This is a cost of the Apollo Program that is rarely discussed, and we, like the dazed author at the end of the book, have to decide for ourselves if the cost was worth it.

This philosophical twist, perhaps unexpectedly, is the author's biggest contribution to space literature. Borman's account of his missions reveals little new material, and he remains too private a man to titillate the reader with his uncensored thoughts about, say, Jim Lovell, with whom he spent an eternity in the closest of quarters. As a narrative of the race to the moon, this is a superficial work from one so intimately connected to the space program. But my guess is that Borman's real interest in writing his autobiography was less about space hardware and more about figuring out just what the hell happened to him.

5 out of 5 stars Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?.......2001-04-28

Borman's "Countdown" tells the riveting tale of his boyhood, his Air Force days, his immense contributions to the space program, and his airline career. His participation in the Apollo 1 fire investigation and subsequent Senate testimony were instrumental in getting the moon program back on track, for to everyone concerned - astronauts, Congressmen, and the press - Borman's integrity was unquestionable. This comes across immediately to the reader through Borman's narrative, but not through self-serving "Boy Do I Love Me" puffery. Indeed, Borman's sincere modesty immediately reassures the reader that this is a man who lives the motto "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth".

Some of the ugly, goofball politics of the time come up as Borman and his crew are humiliated by Cornell students egged on by none other than Carl Sagan. I never really thought much of Sagan before reading Borman's book, and I think far less of him now; though in the interest of fairness I will say that Sagan's motivations were more selfish than political (he always objected to the expense of manned spaceflight, and instead advocated unmanned exploration as the best way to obtain the hard science he insisted on - this came up in a lecture Sagan gave in Seattle shortly before his death while undergoing cancer treatment), he comes across as the petty, self-serving geek he really was, not the "Mr. Friendly Scientist" he portrayed himself as in his works. Borman and his men deserved far better.

The wanton destruction of Eastern Airlines by the active sabotage of the Machinists Union is also well documented. Borman's no-nonsense, high-speed, low-drag leadership style was lost on the proto-human union bosses. It's really too bad Eastern went under, but having read what was truly going on, I now know that it wasn't Borman's fault. It speaks volumes for Borman's character that despite some bitterness and finger-pointing on his part (though his points were well-made), he accepts responsibility for his mistakes and shortcomings in the loss of Eastern, displaying the same integrity with which he has led all of his life. It's a really good book by a fine man. As another reviewer said, we desperately need more men like him. Sadly, in this politically correct, touchy-feely age, Borman's kind are a vanishing breed, and his book answers the question that titles this review. The battle to save Eastern was foretold decades ago by Ayn Rand. Borman didn't want to shrug, but was forced to. I hope the Machinists are happy now.

Book Description

When it reaches zero, you die.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen sets her readers’ pulses racing once again in this relentless psychological thriller of a young woman caught in a maze of secrets and stalked by a merciless killer. The countdown begins the moment you open this riveting novel that only grows more electrifying as the pages turn, more exciting as time runs out. . . .

“Don’t kill her. She’s no good to us dead.” These words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt–or the countdown to something far more sinister?

Who is after her–and what do they want so badly they’ll kill anyone in their way? That’s what Jane is determined to find out, without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD–because whoever is after her won’t hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the modern-day world.

Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has already begun, and it’s approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.

3 out of 5 stars Countdown: A "Normal" mystery thriller.......2007-10-04

General Outline:
Jane is trying to be a normal university student when she gets dragged into a life she thought she left behind. When her childhood friend is killed instead of her in a kidnapping attempts she must once again deal with her mysterious/dangerous protector named Trevor. She and Trevor have had several run ins over the years dealing with the lost gold of Cira, a famous actress in pompeii before its destruction. Jane looks like "Cira" so she tends to attract people who think she has a mystic connection to her. Once Jane recovers from the shock of having her friend killed in front of her she is on the case and what was a simple case of revenge turns into a race to stop a master brain washer from unleashing his unquestioning servants against the U.S.A.
---
This wasnt a bad book, as the review title states it was a normal mystery thriller. The main character in this book is apparently a secondary character from a couple of pevious books. With this story all the main characters are brought in early and the first half of the book (more or less) details their emotions and various catching up scenes and why-I-like/don't like you moments. By the time Jane leaves the U.S.A and ends up in Scotland where a few more characters are introduced and after a few more emotion scenes we get to the actual story and it turns into the normal terroists are going to blow somthing up and the heros must rush around and put themselves in mortal danger to stop them story. Suffice to say all the bad guys end up having a really bad day when they finally meet the heros. The story is a fast read and it does keep you turning the pages to find out how exaclty everything wraps up and yes it does leave room for *yet* another sequel. All in all fans of this author and light mystery romance fans will proably enjoy this book.

1 out of 5 stars My first, and last Johansen book.......2007-03-10

I've looked at IJ books on the shelves for years, but never read any of her work. This was my first IJ book and sadly I would not recommend it. Countdown is very clearly a part 2 or part 3 of something she wrote previously.

The first part of the book is full of people showing up with no character development at all. At first I thought it was just really poor writing, but then it dawned on me, this is a part 2 of some story started previously. As I continued reading, the vast majority of the story flashes back to previous events, characters, conflicts and plots from part 1, whatever that was.

I think IJ owed it to her readers to mention this as a continuation. It would be a huge help for new IJ readers (like me) so we could read part 1 first.

Then again, maybe the lack of character and plot development is typical for IJ. Countdown was supposed to be about a bomb plot, yet 2/3's of the way through the book the bomb has received only a sentence or two of coverage and across the entire 500+ pages, it warrants less than a full page or two of mention.

Countdown is more of a romance/love story than the thriller it is marketed as. If you go into it expecting a romance, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for a thriller, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an ending, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars College Parents of America Recommends "Countdown".......2004-08-24

As the president of College Parents of America, the only nationwide member association dedicated to serving and advocating on behalf of current and future college parents, I consider Valerie Pierce's "Countdown to College" to be one of the most valuable and user-friendly college planning guides in print. When I first began compiling and culling information for parents to access on our Web site (www.collegeparents.org), I consulted "Countdown" frequently for resources and easy-to-understand explanations of complex preparation and application processes. I found the book to be concise, well-organized and comprehensive in its "To Do" lists for high school students. Today, my staff and I still keep several dog-eared copies around for quick and easy reference. And, we have enlisted Ms. Pierce as one of our "Ask the Experts" panelists for our members to consult. I highly recommend this book for all parents of high school students -- and I guarantee that their copies will become dog-eared as well!

After being shown this book, I ordered two copies; one for my niece and one for my nephew, both of whom will be graduating from eighth grade next spring. Having gone through the experience of looking at, applying to, and choosing colleges with two sons, I can say that the information this book contains is right on the mark. It is thorough, succinctly presented, and easily understood. The list format and quotes from students present the information in a logical way that is fun to read. Organizing the lists as tasks to be considered during each year of high school makes the college search process much less overwhelming. I wish that "Countdown to College" had been available as my family felt its way through the process for the first time seven years ago.

Book Description

The Food Network's Calorie Commando shares his five-week weight-loss program, including 150 low-fat, healthy, and delicious recipes that follow his mantra to “keep the taste while you trim your waist.”

As a pastry chef at Los Angeles's glamorous Hotel Bel Air, Juan-Carlos Cruz created dazzling desserts. Surrounded by the best ingredients and the most tempting dishes, he began to gain weight, eventually topping 280 pounds. Finding little relief in fad diets, he developed his own weight-loss strategies and re-created many of his favorite dishes reducing both calories and fat content.

Today, he's a buff television star who reinvents recipes on the air, slashing wasted calories and making flavors sizzle. The Juan-Carlos Cruz Calorie Countdown Cookbook reveals the tricks of his trade, delivering a five-week plan to get menus on track and establish a weight-loss plan you can savor for life.

After telling his own story of success and weight loss in the “Confessions of a Recovering Pastry Chef” chapter, Cruz eases readers into a gradual calorie-reduction plan. He provides five weeks of daily menus that incorporate his own recipes as well as popular commercial foods. By the end of five weeks, readers will have omitted five hundred calories from their daily intake. Tips, such as his “Chocolate-Chip Cookie Theory,” help readers identify how one deleted menu item can result in big annual calorie savings and sustained weight loss.

Recipes spanning breakfast, snacks, appetizers, sandwiches, main dishes, and even desserts put the spotlight on Cruz's world-class cuisine. Chicken parmesan, macaroni and cheese, tortilla casserole, calzones, and even chocolate cake and cheese fries prove that with the right ingredients there is room for indulgence in a healthy diet. Sixteen pages of tempting color photography complete this savory, surefire package.

5 out of 5 stars Juan Carlos Calorie Countdown.......2007-09-16

The book is well written with precise menus and recipes. Good weight reducing suggestions. Format and pictures in the book are also well done.

4 out of 5 stars Best for SW flair; great recipes.......2007-08-22

AS I had expected this one is best for those on a diet and craving some good Southwestern recipes. Great flavors and few exotics, most foods are easy to find and no long lists of ingredients. Best of all, there is a plan and menus to follow with calorie counts....

5 out of 5 stars Juan Carlos Cruz.......2007-08-11

The recipes are easy and taste very good. I enjoyed watching his TV show because his food looked delicious and seemed easy. I enjoyed reading his diet suggestions and his food menus work.

5 out of 5 stars Great food, & BTW - it's *healthy* too!.......2007-06-06

I knew the author when he was a pastry chef working at the Hotel Bel Air and weighed more than I do now [which is over 225#.] You'd figure a pastry chef would know about making food that tastes delectably enticing, & Mr. Cruz makes good on that guess: there's not a recipe in this book that doesn't satisfy, while providing a low-calorie alternative to the heavy cooking I grew up with. Thanks sooo, much, Mr. Cruz for showing me a way to enjoy life without shortening it or adding to my time crunch by requiring more hours in the gym!

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Food for the entire family.......2007-04-09

I have been a fan of Juan-Carlos since his days on Discovery Channel and Food Network. I have used his recipes before and loved them. This book has taken some of these recipes and improved them and added new ones. My family does not even know these are "healthy" versions of some of their favorites. Every recipe is tasty, full of flavor and low on fat. My favorite is Tiramisu. It is incredible and tastes just like the higher fat version. I am now down 50 pounds and my whole family is lighter, but healthier. At first I was disappointed to find out half the book was the recipes (I was hoping for more) and the rest is a weight loss plan, but I now refer to it several times a week for inspiration. If you are already a Juan-Carlos fan, this book will not disappoint, and if you are new to him, you will be a fan quickly. Using these recipes along with a sensible eating plan is all you need for a great makeover. I cannot wait for the next book!

Book Description

The average pregnancy lasts 280 days and the suspense can be excruciating!

The Pregnancy Countdown Book starts on Day 280 and counts down the biggest milestones every step of the way with one page of helpful information for each day of your pregnancy. Here are tips from doctors and midwives, amusing anecdotes and quotes, and occasional gory-but-necessary details (if you can define the word "lochia," you know what we're talking about).

Every page offers an interesting revelation. On Day 231, your baby will be the size of a blueberry but by Day 168, he'll be the size of a large avocado. By Day 124, you'll need to stop sleeping on your back; by Day 90, air travel becomes a dicey proposition. And if you haven't planned the nursery by Day 45, you're playing with fire.

A perfect gift for expecting moms of all ages, The Pregnancy Countdown Book is a delightfully irreverent look at the craziest nine months of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for reading..........2007-07-27

This book is shorter than the versions you see out there but still is worth the reading. When you are in a hurry or just trying to keep your eyes open this book is quick enough to read during those tired times to get you informed quickly and with some humor. Coupled with another pregnancy book, you will be able to know everything for your pregnancy. This is a good read and a day by day informational page turner. Enjoy. :)

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-06-23

I love this book it gives you a page per day to read with funny little insights, tips, advice, and a little reality. I pick this book up to read more than any of the other pregnancy books that I have.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshingly funny and very informative! Perfect little book for moms-to-be!.......2007-06-19

A friend of mine gave me this book early on in my pregnancy. And I will continue to pass it along to my other friends who are pregnant.

I've enjoyed this book tremendously. It presents useful and honest information with humor! How refreshing! I looked forward to reading this book each night, to lighten things up a bit, and to make me laugh when I was feeling so lousy during the first trimester.

I purchased the Mayo Clinic's Guide To a Healthy Pregnancy (which is excellent, by the way) to satisfy my need for in-depth, professional information regarding all aspects of pregnancy. The Pregnancy Countdown Book is a wonderful supplement to your "more serious" reading.

Bottom Line: anything that can make me laugh in the face of daily nausea and vomiting deserves 10 stars!

5 out of 5 stars cute book.......2007-05-30

This is a great little book. I enjoyed reading it and have given it as a gift to several other 1st time expecting moms. It is light reading and mostly humorous with a little info in there as well.

Book Description

From the nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize 2006:

“The most urgent and disastrous threat to world peace today is the looming danger that Iran will produce nuclear weapons. . . . Kenneth R. Timmerman, a U.S. expert on Iran, has for more than twenty years exposed Iran’s nuclear activities and intentions. . . . Despite the illusions of many in positions of power, he has been right, again and again. His latest book, Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran, lays out this ongoing scandal in chilling detail.” —Per Ahlmark, former Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, nominating Timmerman for the Nobel Peace Prize

IRAN: THE REAL ENEMY

Who is the greatest threat to America? The Islamic Republic of Iran.

In his chilling new book, New York Times bestselling author Kenneth R. Timmerman uses his exclusive access to previously classified documents, Iranian defectors and officials, and high-level intelligence sources to lay bare the true nature of the Iranian threat—and America’s failure to deal with the danger.

Crisscrossing the globe, Timmerman takes readers into secret terrorist gatherings in Tehran, tense meetings in the White House, debriefings at an obscure CIA outpost in Azerbaijan, diplomatic face-offs in the Kremlin, and many other dangerous spots to get the complete story on Iran’s radical Islamic regime.

And in a brand-new chapter for the paperback edition, Timmerman reveals that it may already be too late to stop the Iranian regime. For Americans interested in the truth about Iran, Countdown to Crisis may amount to a call for action—or even a case for war.

5 out of 5 stars Countdown to Nuclear Horror: Modern Iran = Evil Regime.......2007-07-21

This is one fantastic book with full historical documentation of the Iranian government's atomic energy program, and support of radical Islamic terror groups.

The Iranian government's support of insurgent killers who murder, torture, and maim innocent Iraqi civilians and American soldiers alike is another very serious wake up call for the west in our collective attempts to stabilize those nations like Iraq and Afghanistan plagued by war and civil terrorist violence.

The UN also has a responsibility to prevent the Iranian government from obtaining nuclear warheads, on top of sanctioning them for their rouge activities.

The president of Iran is a shrewd and media savvy individual, but also a hate filled and dangerous man who the west should always keep their collective eyes on.

All western nations, and Israel should be on guard, and on alert from the Iranian government's unscrupulous, and vile activities while holding full resolve in confronting Iran when or if the necessary time comes for possible confrontation.

All terrorist groups supported or allied with Iran should be immediately destroyed by full western military force, and all political and economic efforts by the UN and the west should be utilized when confronting the Iranian government on her nuclear ambitions.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed Analysis of Iran's growing threat.......2007-06-18

Timmerman goes right through the history of Iran's growing threat - both the motivation and the nuclear program. He details all the signals that the US ignored and downplayed, as well as the willful blindness on the parts of our allies and the IAEA. After you read it, you will be fully versed on the topic.

...for 100%-pure bigots. If you want to reinforce your prejudices, your Coulterian demons, this book is for you. If your friends are tired of your quoting Coulter, now you can impress them with quotes from this pseudo-intellectual Timmerman. Countless assertions are made in this hackjob which the author makes no attempt to substantiate, but which are clearly designed to increase your level of hatred against people you don't understand.

Read this book, memorize the hooks, and go back to your favorite rightwing chatroom, where you can impress your bigoted pals with your newly found pseudo-knowledge.

By a bigot, for bigots. Wish I had thought of this grand way to make a pile of bucks.

Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran
1. Iran has Uranium enrichment centrifuges and used to convert uranium into fuel for nuclear weapons.

2. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has used Germany made tunneling equipment to bore into a mountain creating six tunnels. Two underground chambers house 15 nuclear warheads. The tunnels are disguised with a rock door. Two tunnels house Shahab-3 missiles that can be driven outside and launched in 25 minutes; likewise, the missiles can be moving the missile quickly back into the protective cover of the mountain, in the case of a counterstrike.

3. Harden underground near Isafahan is though to be a location where uranium hexafluoride is produced as a nuclear weapon fuel.

4. Weaponized labs near Parchin produce HMX, a non-nuclear lens that triggers a nuclear bomb.

5. UN IAEA turned a blind eye to Pakistan nuclear mastermind Dr. Abdel Qader Khan, who in 1986 signed a nuclear consulting agreement with Iranian leadership. Dr. Khan facilitated black market supply chains for the last 18 years, the inventories are bear, and it is believed that Iran possesses enough fissile material to produce 20 to 25 nuclear weapons.

6. Iranian officials were involved in 911 and collaborated with Al Qadea: provided passports, safe haven, intelligence assistence, secure communications, training in explosives and airline hijacking. Murder is one tool the ruling clerics used to disrupt opposition "Velayat-e faghih".

7. July 26,2001 Hamid Reza Zakeri defected and disclosed a the 911 plot to CIA operatives. In Zakeri's, 5 page letter, he describes "impending terrorist attack", however, the CIA thought Zakeri was lying. Zakeri sketched out the organization chart for the Iranian Shadow Intelligence Organization and revealed that Ali Akhar Nateq-Nouri was the top man and Mustafa Hadadian reported to him, Zakeri's boss. The 911 attack was to happen on the 20th of Shahrivar and strike: the World Trade Center, the Whitehouse, the Pentagon, and Camp David.

Countdown to confrontation:
1. Apr 12, 1996, Hussein Mohammad Mikdad, a Lebanese Shiite was instructed by Iranian handlers to hand carry a bomb onto an El Al flight in Tel Aviv.

2. Iran financial funds Hamas groups to disrupt security stability in Israel

3. Homayoun Maghadam, a member of the Iranian People's Party, describes an elaborate RAAD plan.

4. June 10, 1996 Homayoun says the Republican Guard Police and Iranian Defense plan to hijack a U.S civilian airline using Lebanese surrogates. The CIA can not use the information because it is not a specific airline threat lacking a date and location. The information can not be communicated to the airlines. The airlines do not want generalized threats because of the negative impact to their business.

5. June 20, 1996, CIA meets with Homayoun but can't confirm his "Elvis" source.

6. June 24, The Defense Intelligence Agency Middle East is told a plan is unfolding in Saudi and two days later, the Khobar Towers are bombed.

7. July 11, Homayoun reports that "attack on US civilian airliner is imminent".

8. July 17, The TWA flight 800 explodes, 20 minutes in the air, and 230 people die. The bomb is thought to be a double device: standard chronometer that delays activation and barometric that triggers the bomb at a certain pressure.

9. Apr 1997, Iran's Shahid Hemat Industrial Group test fires a R-214 rocket engine; the R-214 was a component of a Russian Intermediate rage nuclear missile from an SS-4, a mille that supposedly was destroyed under the 1987 INF treaty.

10. 1994, Iran turned to Russia after the failed test of the No-Dong/Zelzal 3 mille developed by North Korea.

11. Iran claims development and production of a new missile called the Shahib-3. The Shahib-3 gives Iran the capability to launch an unconventional warhead on Israel. Russia is becoming more active in Iran's nuclear missile program and Iran benefits from Russian advisors and shipment of missile components.

12. Russian missile cooperation has been accelerated by Vevgeny Primakov, the foreign minister in power, in 1996. Primakov believes Russia stands to gain from a stronger Iran as a counter against US influence in the Persian Gulf.

13. Yuri Koptev, a member of the Russian Space Agency is also involved in the transformation of Iran.

14. Russian Federation Security Doctrine states, "the main external force potential capable of creating a threat to Russian Federation military security and to Russian economic and political interest" is the US: conventional Forces in Europe and encroachment in the oil-rich Caspean sea.

15. July 21, 1998, The Shahib-3 prototype flew 620 miles Southeast from Shahroud toward the Persian Gulf and consuming 100 seconds of fuel burnt then is exploded midair. The Shahib-3 has a range of 800 miles and could read targets as far away as Tel Aviv and possibly Cairo.

16. Aug 31, 1998, North Korea test fires a multi stage missile called the Taepo Dong and the missile travels over 1,000 miles and overshoots Japan.

China:
1. July 7, 1991, Li Peng had a 3-day stop over in Iran with the purpose of determining if Iran would pay for Chinese weapons. The culmination of the trip, the two leaders signed $5 billion agreement for military, industrial, and economic packages. Li told the press that China would provide the expertise and technology to complete the Iranian Busheir reactor. China would help Iran build the manufacturing process that would allow Iran to nuclear components for their reactor. China backed off building the 27 megawatt heavy-water reactor under threats they would lose most favored nation status, if the deal went through.
2. China provided Pakistan assistance with its weapons program. China was heavily invested in Pakistan nuclear infrastructure, in some sensitive areas it was easier for China to operate through Pakistan than deal directly with Iran. Iran and Pakistan ancestral hatred was a concern between the two communities; Rafsanjani acknowledge strong ties to fellow Shiites in Pakistan but the commitment only extend through charitable foundations, not meddling in the domestic affairs; Iran was committed to developing strategic cooperation with Pakistan, and was pleased to have China's blessing in this endeavor. Pakistan was producing new weapons with Chinese help in Islamabad and Lahore and eventually Pakistan and Iran concluded a defense treaty. China gave Pakistan bomb designs, equipment, and technical assistance. Pakistan turns around and sells it to Iran.

EPCI
1. 1990, Bush passed the Enhanced Proliferation Control Initiative to prevent military technologies from reaching Iran. Under EPCI, U.S. exporters were required to obtain a license to export any goods-even a pencil or screwdriver-to foreign entities or projects of proliferation concern. The regulation called on Commerce to develop a black list of such projects and make it available to exporters. The Commerce never published a blacklist, for fear that identifying projects and entities of concern would jeopardize U.S intelligence sources and methods. New trade restrictions signed into law by President Bush in 1992 prohibited high-technology sales to Iran altogether. Despite this US exports to Iran increased in the ensuing month under G-DEST authority of the commerce department. In 1992, 60 of the $750 million worth of US goods and equipment shipped to Iran were subject to Commerce Department shipping. By Oct 23, 1992, the percentage of licensed goods dropped to mere 2.5 percent of total exports. Among the equipment shipped under G-DEST authority were toxins (medical research or bioterror), microorganisms, turbojet engines, vacuum pumps, centrifuges, machine tools, gas separation equipment, large hydraulic presses for metal formation, gas chromatagraphs, and mass spectrometers; also, a series of high-powered computers, worth close to $1 million each. The commerce department classified these items as "Low-level equipment". Lantos name more than 230 companies that were selling technology and equipment to Iran.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Polemic Backed by Facts.......2006-12-31

Kenneth Timmerman's 'Countdown to Crisis' was interesting for what it is. He outlines Iran's quest for nuclear weapons and how they have put their clandestine program together. He also draws attention to al-Qaeda's relationship to Iran. He weaves in horrific stories of Iran's hand in terrorism inside and outside of Iran for further effect.

Considering Iran practically admits it desires nuclear weapons this book seems more like history than an expose. Much of his intelligence regarding al-Qaeda is from an Iranian defector named Zakeri who the CIA and others believe is not reliable. Timmerman also seems to elude that the CIA has an interest in sheltering Iran which is difficult to comprehend.

Even though it appears that Timmerman is familiar with all sides of the Iranian resistance, it seems he does not understand Iran well. There are a fair amount of 'cheap shots' and sarcasm throughout the book which make it seem more like an editorial than anything scholarly. Timmerman comes across as an idealogue and almost xenophobic, although he is apparently well traveled.

Timmerman assumes that the Iranian government needs to be changed but does not lay out the case for that opinion. In the last chapter he suggests some ways that could be done which are far from complete. He does not care for Reza Pahlavi or the Mujahedin-e Khalk, but suggests that we support pro-democracy groups inside Iran clandestinely. It may be a good idea... if reliable, legitimate ones existed. He also paints a picture of a sea launched nuclear weapon near the East Coast which came across as nothing more than a scare tactic for a knock out punch.

After reading this book you will know that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons and that they may have had a working relationship with al-Qaeda- if Timmerman's sources are to be trusted. You will not understand the internal politics of Iran or the nature or history of the United State's relationship with Iran. A much better and comprehensive book in my opinion is 'The Persian Puzzle' by Kenneth Pollack.

With a nod to Jack Kirby's One Man Army Corps, The OMAC Project continues DC's inexorable path to Infinite Crisis. In addition to the OMAC Project miniseries, the trade paperback begins with the 80-page issue Countdown to Infinite Crisis, in which Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, investigates some financial troubles but discovers a huge plot to eliminate all "meta-humans" (that's superheroes to most of us). Attempts to involve the Justice League are unsuccessful, and with buddy Booster Gold unable to help, Kord sets out on his own. The OMAC Project might be the most engrossing of the four stages of the Prelude to Infinite Crisis. Like the rest, it can be confusing without encyclopedic knowledge of the DC Universe (and two of the interacting characters are almost indistinguishable from each other), but a background page on the key characters helps significantly. Written by (among others) Greg Rucka, with art by Jesus Saiz, Rags Morales, Cliff Richards, and others. Not included is the 2006 one-shot follow-up. --David Horiuchi

Batman's desire to keep tabs on everyone and everything that could be a problem has caused a lot of problems. Max Lord and his own somewhat sentient creation and killer satellite have their own plans, which includes turning an army of normal people into killing machines to remove superhumans and others that they see as threats to their agenda.

Much carnage ensues.

3 out of 5 stars So good, then the floor fell out.......2006-09-01

This book was so good, so good, but it died such a hard death right in the middle, because they left out issues of a tie in series and instead just put a couple of paragraphs explaining what happened. But then again the only reason it was as good as it was is because of the body count in it, they basicly kill the crappy mid ninties Justice League. And the fight between Superman and Wonder Woman, was awful from a continuty view, because Superman has the power to outright kill Wonder Woman but inexplicably doesn't, and she had the ability to stop him by throwing her lasso, but waits until he nearly throws her into the sun before she does it, that fight just wasn't good. The Checkmate agent gaining some techno skin was bizzarre too, and really did not make sense to me when it happened.

The Death of Ted Kord is why you should buy this book, pretty much nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, solid story leading to Infinite Crisis & 52.......2006-07-28

The Omac Project is basically 2 stories. The first story follows Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle as he attempts to find out why his company is losing money to something called OMAC and how the rest of earth's heroes basically dismiss him as an overactive amateur. This storyline ends in Kord's murder at the hands of his one-time friend Maxwell Lord. The second part of the story deals with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman attempting to stop Lord and his OMAC's. This storyline is a bit more of the typical superhero story, with some shocking moments. It is the first half of the story that really drives this book. Ted Kord is written really well and really what this story proves is that there was no reason to kill Kord. His death was pointless, only made way for a new character who did not need to appear. Overall this is a good book, but it shows how there is sometimes poor reasons to kill off heroes.

4 out of 5 stars "So that man may live...".......2006-04-25

Spinning out of the events of Identity Crisis, and setting the stage for the massive Infinite Crisis event, the OMAC Project is just one of the four mini-series that set up DC's current "world changing event". Collecting the six issue OMAC Project mini-series as well as the 80-page Countdown to Infinite Crisis one shot, the OMAC Project starts out with the Blue Beetle discovering that something is amiss in the super hero world, resulting in getting his brains blown out. From that point on, Batman reveals that he knows he was mindwiped by his fellow Justice Leaguers, and he has a contingency plan. Only thing is, his plan backfires when it comes under someone else's control, namely Maxwell Lord. Casual comic readers won't know much about many of the characters featured throughout this TPB besides DC's featured characters, but writer Greg Rucka surprisingly sets the stage well for the upcoming events which may prove to be cataclysmic. Also, it's more than worth mentioning the finale of the OMAC Project, with a final page that will leave readers begging for more. Undoubtadly the best of the Infinite Crisis prelude mini's, the OMAC Project manages to convey a well meaned morality tale wrapped up in a super hero soap opera, but hey, it works.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-02-24

I just think this is a great DC story, after reding this I just can't wait to finish all the infinite crisis saga.

3 out of 5 stars The book was just ok but the timer is super cute.......2007-07-03

Not much else to say- the book didn't say much different than every other book or magazine for brides and weddings out there, but the timer was super cute and I set it up right away. If you don't have any other books, it's a nice book, but if you already have a few, you won't learn anything new from this one
