Great Photoshop book for photographers.......2007-10-04
I've been working with Photoshop for several years and have recently purchased this book. I think that the reader should have a working knowledge of Photoshop before using this book because it assumes you understand the basics. Ms. Eismann provides excellent instructions and downloadable photos on which to work. I highly recommend this book for photographers interested in retouching old photos or for those who want to extend their Photoshop techniques.

I can only be enthusiastic when it comes to this book. The instructions and examples are very down to earth and clear. Just what I was looking for. As a result I then purchased Katrin's other book "Masking & Compositing" or as she says it should have been "Selecting, Masking & Compositing". I have purchased several books on Photoshop CS3 now and have read them all from cover to cover. Katrin's M&C book was written for CS - but I found it very instructive even when used with CS3.

I took a one day Adobe Photoshop CS2 class. The instructor recommended this book for extra training. Photoshop is a program you can study for years and still have tons more to learn . This book gives you a great headstart. It's easy to follow and contains a great deal of usefull information. It's the kind of book you read cover to cover but it's also a good reference book. It's nice to be able to go at your own pace.

I love these creativity cards! The graphics on one side are unique, interesting, colorful, and eye catching. The prompts on the flipside are thought-provoking, meaningful, and different. The small journal is a great creative jumpstart in itself. I love the colors and techniques that were used to produce the backgrounds. Think I'll even attempt to create some of those myself. The box housing the creativity cards and journal is sturdy and pleasant to look at.
This is a fresh concept, and I am enjoying this package very much.
By the way, this is in no way a "how to" of any type. It is intended to make you think about doing old things in a fresh way or to help you attempt something new altogether.

these cards are amazing. each one is a little piece of art in itself. you'll want to frame and hang them. except then you wouldn't be able to turn them over and get a shot in the arm of inspiration... yummy. i'm too afraid to work in the little workbook as yet, tho. i don't wanna mess it up. :)
if you're looking for cutesy, pretty art, tho, look somewhere else. this is real, gritty from-the-soul art. the kind that hits you "right there". and hopefully will help you make your own journal pages that do the same.
several of them are geared towards photography but lots of it is the kind that can be done with even an el cheapo camera. the author will also have you using tape, glue, spraypaint, and maybe a few things you never thought of as art supplies before. this is the kind of journaling that begs you to jump in and get messy.
if you do any kind of visual journaling, i highly recommend these cards and workbook.

I got this after much thought. I figured it was just another "how to do a journal book". But, I found it to be much fun to do the exersizes and if you are an artist with a block, this will help to unblock you. It can give you ideas you never really thought of before on approaching your art work. Plus, as I said, it is a lot of fun to do the exersizes suggested on the individual cards. The kit also includes a fun little notebook/journal book to do as you please with. If you teach art, these are also fun ideas to inspire your students. I plan on doing that with my students this Fall.

First of all, this will make a perfect gift for anyone crafty or involved in journaling, scrapbooking, altered books, ATCs, etc. It's a very affordable gift that keeps on giving.
The author opens your eyes to new ways to be creative in a way anyone, whether an "artist" or not, can use everyday observations to create real, unique, personal, fun, journal pages. She'll encourage you to take in all your surroundings and find a common element - she was able to find the common element while sitting in an Italian restaurant and watching war protesters: she, the waiter, the protesters were all waiting, caught up in a moment in time which was the theme she used for one one of her journal pages. She uses paint, photography and any object that she can use to express herself in her work -and makes no apologies. I LOVE this little gem. Just lovely and real. You won't be disappointed.
Great things come in little boxed sets..........2007-07-04
I noticed that there was a 1 star review of "Wide Open...". No offense, reviewer, but clearly you don't have a clue. Yes, the cards in the set are sort of vague -- if you are looking for step-by-step instructions for making something, don't waste your money on this. And, yes, you do need to own... and have some very basic knowledge of... art supplies (again, no offense, but if you've been within spitting distance of an art supply or craft store, then you'll know what gesso is).
[Ok, stepping off my soap box and done with the snarky comments.] Randi Feuerhelm-Watts is such an inspiration! I love her style and the ideas for inspiration that she presents on the cards go way beyond some of the tired, old suggestions that seem to always crop up in art/craft publications.
I read all the cards in one sitting (because I'm obsessive like that!) and I did notice that some of them related to each other. Not that they are dependent on each other or that you would be lost if you pick them at random... but I did observe some links between the individual ideas. I think this is great for continuing themes in your art work. Also, while she references photography quite a bit (she is a photographer after all), I definitely do not feel that any of the ideas are pigeonholed by the techniques. The author's basic ideas translate really well no matter what kind of visual artwork you might do.
The cards themselves each feature snippets of the author's artwork on the back. This alone is incredibly inspirational. You almost get double the bang for your buck - pull out one of the cards to interpret the visual side and then come back to it later for inspiration from the narrative side.
My only complaint would be about the Creativity Notebook... I wouldn't really call it a complaint, persay. I guess I'm just ambivalent about it's inclusion in the set. On one hand she has provided some great backgrounds to help you combat "white page syndrome" as well as some random instructions to offer a jump start to someone who is new to visual journaling. But on the other hand, I don't see myself personally using it since I already have half a dozen journals and prefer to make my own backgrounds (once you get on a roll, its half the fun).
The ideas and techniques are presented in Randi's conversational style, along with her great little stories. While I have not had the pleasure of taking a class with her or meeting her, she comes across as the kind of person you'd love to have as an art friend because she'd always be inspiring and challenging. I think that's the greatest thing about this kit... she's managed to package a ton of her personality and a lot of what I imagine she teaches in her workshops into one cool product. This set definitely gets a front row spot on my art-bookshelf.

Updated to 4 Stars **** My first review was too harsh. The book is an excellent resource but not always a breath of inspiration. It is not about old house renovation and thus my comparison to the Nash book was unfair. ****** This book is to the George Nash book as a primary reader is to intermediate reading. Useful basic information about tools and materials but lets read Time-Life Books How-To Series for that. When it comes to the nitty gritty of dealing with the tough stuff (foundations, basemants, blueboard, plaster, etc.) it just stops short of the mark. If this book is really new information to you then call a contractor to do the work because you are in way over your head. Might be useful as a vocabulary builder when working with a contractor or subcontractor but as a DIY guide just not quite brown on both sides.

great book recommended by contractor who sold me the house i am now remodeling. his 1st edition copy is listerally falling apart. the only detail that i have found to be missing is the exclusion of clothes washing machines in the plumbing section (every aspect of the other fixtures that make use of water supply and drains are addressed in detail with specifications). the basic concepts CAN be applied to washing machines, but the detail used to address the supply/drain system for other fixtures automatically makes the washer's omission erroneous.

Gross inequality in today's public schools.......2007-10-07
I knew inequality existed in our public schools before I read Kozol's book. I am in a teacher education program and I have done my own research on this subject. I have read Kozol's "Ordinary Resurrections"; I have been aware of his work for a few years.
It is time for the way public schools are funded to change. It will continue to be impossible to provide the same quality of education to all of the students availing themselves of public education in the United States. If someone is unsure of the validity of this statement, read "The Shame of the Nation." Kozol brings the reality of the disparity of our school system into stark relief. His experience puts real faces on the picture of disparity he has witnessed. The public school system isn't working for everyone, it's not set up to work for everyone, and it's time to get the word out.
Re-Segregation.......2007-09-26
You must read this book if you are a teacher in the urban American public school machine. This book is especially helpful for those who have not been exposed to cultural groups other than the white-dominant-privileged middle/upper class. You will not believe that these social injustices occur in our so called "democracy."
Not Kozol's Best.......2007-05-30
I wasn't as moved by this book as his others. The book worked hard to make its major point- schooling in America is becoming more and more segregated. It also pushed funding as the answer, almost ignoring others. Worth the time, but not a classic as Savage Inequalities was.
A compelling story, but no solutions.......2007-04-24
In The Shame Of The Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling In America, Jonathan Kozol writes a convincing argument of the resegregation of children's schools in America. Although his argument is compelling, he leaves the reader feeling helpless because of his lack of solutions to the problem.
Kozol used experiences and stories from his own teaching at schools and from his visits to poor minority schools as evidence for his argument. His work at segregated schools and his experience of resegregation in schools, showed that he has been around for a long time, which proves his wisdom and knowledge. He has brought credibility into his data. He also does not attempt to slander anyone in particular or point at someone to blame for the entire problem. His use of narratives and vignettes of different characters made his story interesting and easy to read. He seemed very honest and reliable because he talked to kids and teachers who gave him their opinions from which he based his evidence upon.
Kozol's accounts and experiences were very eye-opening for me considering I grew up in a middle class area. His research made me look back and examine my own public school experiences, where I had not realized that segregation still existed. Kozol is very successful in convincing the reader that America still faces segregation to this day.
However, as the book came to an end he had yet to provide any solutions for ending segregation in America's public schools. He easily criticized government funded programs and attempts towards reform, but neglected to say what the government could specifically do in order to solve the problem. His negative outlook on their attempts made me feel hopeless that anything could be done. Kozol believed that educational reformers were headed in the wrong direction, but then what is the right direction? This is where Kozol lacks in explanation. If America is taking the wrong turn, then where do the students, teachers, principals, and parents go from here.
segregation.......2007-03-19
This has been a eye opening book for me. Before I read this novel, I had no knowledge there was such a wide gap between schools attended by more minorties versus schools in more middle or upper middle areas. Kozol has established a convincing argument that there needs to be an end to segregation in our school system and a change in the way schools are administered. After reading this book you cannot help but feel sorry for the millions of children who are being left behind despite other efforts.
I recommend reading this book to everyone who lives in the United States; to discover what is happening in our country because many of us have little understanding of what is occuring, even in the same school district. It is an insightful look at our educational system and I look forward to reading more from Jonathan Kozol.

I was very excited to get this book as we plan to incorporate some craftsman style elements into the 1970s bungalo we're buying. The interiors in the photos were not terribly attractive and leaned towards kitschy. Unless you want to turn you house into a museum to 20th century cheasiness, don't buy this book.

So you've bought a bungalow--now, what do you do with it? Maybe it's a fixer-upper; maybe it's too small, or doesn't have enough storage space; maybe you're just not sure what kind of furniture to get. This book is a great start toward deciding where to go next. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs, it shows not only many of the features by which you can tell an Arts & Crafts house when you see it (I was surprised to learn that the big old foursquares such as my grandparents lived in for 40 years are included in this classification), but gives actual ideas carried out by other homeowners, even unto before-and-after floor plans. The author's advice is thoughtful and well suited to the houses she writes about, too. And if you just like to look at pictures of vintage American homes, this would be a good volume to add to your collection.
Houses, er, too large.......2005-07-06
There's a lot of good in this book, and it's given me a few ideas for my own arts-and-crafts vernacular house, but at the same time it's frustrating. Lots of the pictures feel (or explicitly state) that they're from houses much larger than the classic 900-2000 square foot bungalow.
Given that Taunton is also the publisher of The Not So Big House and a few books on cottages, it's a little strange to see bungalows recast so large, either built bigger or with additions tastefully tucked out of view from the street.
While I like most of the details they show, their approach (perhaps necessary to include the new bungalows being built today) means that a lot of the coziness small bungalows naturally offered is missing, replaced by modern open plans and a lot of period trim and woodwork that can't quite make up the difference.

Priority for the Poor.......2007-07-21
Being on the extremely limited budget, the idea of restoring our 1923 craftsman kitchen to the obsessive original is not even an option. This fabulous book gives you numerous ideas/ paths as to what a $100,000 restoration would encompass, and then provides compromises that the 'normal' home owner can accomplish with great results. It definitely made me re-contemplate several ideas that we had already set in stone, and I think ultimately will save us investment money. My favorite aspect of this book? Unlike several bungalow magazines (which will go unnamed) that feel the need to pretentiously describe the 'color of fumed oak' and ten million other things that the average home owner will never afford or see, Jane Powell is down to earth and able to 'talk' to you like your neighbor next door.

If I were restoring an old bungalow kitchen, this book might have been more useful. But I am just trying to bring some period touches to the new Craftsman bungalow that I'm building. The author gives examples of "Obsessive Restoration" and a "Compromise Solution" for each element of restoring a bungalow kitchen. I found a few things useful, such as what countertops were found in a period bungalow, but I could have found that elsewhere on the internet. In addition, the author wasted way too many pages discussing the history of kitchens, which is irrelevant to me. Her companion book, "Bungalow Bathrooms" is much of the same.

I've been toying for years with plans to fix up the kitchen in our 1923 American Foursquare house, but last year when both my nonagenarian grandmothers moved into Assisted Living Facilities, I found myself clearing out their kitchens. When I brought some of their vintage kitchen equipment into my own kitchen, it suddenly came clear that my own kitchen re-do simply had to honor the history of my house and more importantly, the histories of my grandmothers' kitchens.
I am in no way interested in obsessive restoration, but I really needed to see what kitchens of my grandmothers' childhoods and young married lives would look like. What might my own kitchen have looked like when it was first built? There are charming Craftsman details elsewhere in my home... under the barn-red paint and 1970's "country primitive" wallpaper, what was the feel of this room?
This book is like a stroll through a neighborhood-full of kitchens from this era, wonderfully photographed and clearly explained. While my kitchen renovation will be a relatively simple project, I am thrilled to have such a lovely resource on which to base my search for the kitchen that lies beneath all that paint!
My favorite home decorating book bar none.......2006-12-27
I can't even count the number of times I've reread this book or just leafed through and admired the fabulous pictures. As the owner of a 1920 foursquare, nothing makes me sadder than to see an old house that's been "improved" by someone with no sense of history or vintage style. This book celebrates vintage kitchens in painstaking detail, describing the form and function of every single surface, nook and cranny. If you're using this book as a "how to" guide, the authors are realistic enough to give you several levels of authenticity from which to choose -- for instance, are you going to go all the way and have a vintage icebox? Can you not live without a microwave and dishwasher? What kind of screws should you use on your cabinet hinges if you want to be "period authentic?" The companion bathroom book is great, too, but this book is my very favorite and inspired me to replace my brand new (but characterless) gas stove with a yellow and green 1920's model with shapely long legs!

I have been using Photoshop Elements for quite some time and have many of the books printed on the subject. This is not as comprehensive as Barbara Brundage's, Scott Kelby's or Philip Andrews but it is excellent. A really great resource and good for a beginner to intermediate user. There are many ways of doing any job, certainly so with Photoshop, and Matt often uses a different approach; I've gotten a few 'tricks' different than shown by other authors. The instructions are easy to follow and an advantage (at least for me) is he does not rely on an enclosed DVD of his photo. I like to learn on mine! Definitely recommended!

Throw out your other digital retouching books!.......2007-06-18
I've taken online classes, read plenty of books, spent many hours tring to interpret instuctions on portrait retouching. I read Matt's book and was like "oh that's how you do it". The light came on and stayed lit through all his tutorials. Best thing... you don't have to read the whole book to learn Elements. Want to retouch eyes - just go to that portion of the book. No need to have read previous chapters/pages. People who have never used Elements can understand his instructions easily. Matt writes with wit and gets right to the point. I love this book and keep it right next to my key board for reference.
Matt's Best Work Yet..........2007-05-20
I'm a Photoshop User, I don't use Elements, so I was a bit put off given the focus was on Elements and frankly didn't know if anyone could come close to matching the worthiness of Katrin Eismann's seminal works on the same subject. But on the strength of Scott Kelby's (ostensibly Matt's boss at NAPP) recommendation on his blog, I went ahead and ordered a copy.
Suffice to say, I'm glad I did. From beginning to end, this book is SUBSTANTIVE. Matt has wisely decided to adopt Scott's bottom up approach... that is, Matt presents the issue at the beginning of a section and then shows you how to address the problem (so be forewarned, this is NOT an Elements primer) quickly and effectively. And of course, given that Elements is by and large a subset of its big brother, all the techniques described are easily applied in Photoshop.
In the end, Matt has done well enough that he too can sit on the same stage as Ms. Katrin Eismann (if you haven't read any of her stuff, you should, she is just flat brilliant). My copy is soon to be dogeared as I will be attempting to script as many of the techniques as I can... for those that I can't, I'm practicing the technique and then creating a spreadsheet with 2 columns; Problems & Solutions as there are just a TON of solutions in this work.
So, even if you are a Photoshop bigot like me, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It is Matt's best work yet.
BY FAR THE BEST FOR A BEGINNER.......2007-03-22
Having used various photo editing programs with little effort, I decided to purchase PhotoShop Elements 5.0. Much to my distress, it has proven to be much more complicated than I had anticipated. Viewing the tutorials, and the help topics supplied with Elements did me little good. I am still unfamiliar with most of the Elements tools, but since I mainly use it for editing my photos, this book has been great! The book takes you step by step through the process of a specific project so that you do not have to learn what all the tools do until you need to use them. I would recommend it for anyone who uses Elements to edit their photographs - even the more advanced users. I wish all the manuals I have bought were written like this!

Tom Dye has chronicled the national leadership since the Nixon-Ford years, each edition featuring the current president and his staff. The seventh edition focuses on the new Bush administration and the contrast it will bring to Washington following 8 years of Clinton dominance. The commentary is supported by years of data analysis involving more than 7000 institutional elites, which includes governmental and corporate leaders. This edition describes the return of the Bush dynasty to power. It includes a new chapter on “The Money Elite”, describing the power of the banking and financial community as well as the Federal Reserve Board; Chapter 7 now covers important issues concerning elite interlocking, recruitment, social characteristics, class, and factionalism; the discussion of “How Institutional Leaders Make Public Policy” has been expanded greatly in Chapter 8; several discussions have been added, including “The Globalization of Economic Power,” “The Battle for IBM,” “Alan Greenspan: Ruling over Money,” “Hillary Clinton: Power and Ambition,” and “Liberal and Conservative Factions among Elites”.

Elite View of American Politics.......2003-05-04
Pretty good book about political elites in the United States. Its strongest point is its empirical discussion of personalities and of groups that have a lot of power in America. Even though the book has been through seven editions, including one following election 2000, some information needs to be updated. This is true, for example, of the discussion about the richest people in America.
The theoretical model I found a bit tangled and not one hundred percent persuasive. I am on the side of the author as far as the major thesis, but I think theoretically this is not the last word on the elite theory of American politics, nor is the book astonishingly creative from the theoretical standpoint.
I also needed more persuasion as far as some specific hypotheses. For example the role of endowments and foundations was presented as a truly major role. Most textbooks on American politics do not even mention endowments and foundations that support academic and scientific research. Much less do most textbooks on the subject consider endowments and foundations to be key players.
Nevertheless, it is a clear no-nonsense book and easy to read, especially if you are interested in politics. I thought it had a nice introductory chapter, paying homage to some of the early great elite theorists, such as Vifredo Pareto, Robert Michels, and Gaetano Mosca.
I recommend it to undergraduate students in American politics and political theory.

What a Book - a must BUY.......2003-10-31
The author takes an revolutionary approach to restoring anterior teeth, a Biomimetic approach. The author goes back to basics and studies nature i.e. the form and function of natural teeth. He then studies how each tissue (dentine/enamel) behaves mechanically (when loaded) and where the forces and stresses concentrate. These findings then lay the foundation as to how teeth should be restored i.e. should they be restored so they are as strong as nature (mimic natures strength) or stronger. The author tends to favour the former approach, and goes about outlining materials and design principles that will achieve this result. He presents an extremely interesting method and commonsense approach to restoring teeth. By reading this book, it allows us to reflect upon the potential disasters (verticle root fractures, decorination) that may be caused by restoring teeth in the traditional way (crowns & posts) whereby making them stronger than nature.

This book is a must have if you enjoy doing bonded porcelain restorations and you want to see how a master does it. The lab work is unbelievable and the photography is excellent. Its like having an Ansel Adams book: you have to see how the best do it so that you have something to aspire to.
The cost is pretty high, but so what. You will want to take notes when you read this. If you are really flush with cash, buy one for your lab tech.
