chicken soup for the teenage soul letters is a book that has a lot of volumes. i really liked this book because it was very interesting. some of the stories were really sad and some of them were really happy.some people would talk about how their life was really bad and how they didn't want to live on this earth anymore and some were really happy love stories. this book was a book talking about real people and real things that happen to kids in their teenage year. when i read this i didn't get bored because it was very eye catching. it's like when you start reading it you just can't stop.
so i give this book 5 stars because i like it so much. if you read this book you will not regret it because it's that great.

I often wonder if other people have the same response to something that I read. This book lets me know that people do.

5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2002-05-17

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: Letters is a collective book of responses to the first three novels of Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. Each story is just as heart warming as the stories in the original book, but this time the stories are ones that occurred due to the previous books in the series. Each story delivers a heart felt lesson of an "oh well, I guess that my life isn't that bad after all, " or a "maybe I should change my life too". Many of the writers were going through times when they thought suicide was the best option or that there was no option at all, each writer then expressed their own reaction to the book and how their life was changed and put back on the right track. Within the contents of the book, I found some truly amazing and uplifting stories; one was about a girl suffering from the loss of her only sister and how each section of the book brought her to overcome her devastating reality. Another was about a girl who got copies of the book for the grieving students at Columbine. Each story was compelling, up lifting, and really let me see what living is all about.
On a scale from 1-10 I would give this book a 9, because of its mysterious ways to make me feel better about my self or just put me in a better mood. One of the most important reasons to pick up this book is because it lets me know that no matter what I do I am not alone and that where ever I go, I can make a difference if I am compelled to help.

Book Description

Avoiding the easy definitions and caricatures that tend to celebrate or condemn the "hip hop generation," Hip Hop Matters focuses on the fierce and far-reaching battles being waged in politics, pop culture, and academe to assert greater control over the movement. At stake, Watkins argues, is the impact hip hop will have in the lives of the young people who live and breathe the culture. The story unfolds through revealing profiles, looking at such players as Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, widely recognized as America's first hip-hop mayor; Chuck D, the self-described "rebel without a pause" who championed the Internet as a way to keep socially relevant rap music alive; and young activists who represent hip hop's insurgent voice. Watkins also presents incisive analysis of the corporate takeover of hip hop; the culture's march into America's colleges and universities; and the rampant misogyny that undermines the movement's progressive claims. Ultimately, we see how the struggle for hip hop reverberates with a larger world: global media consolidation and conglomeration; racial and demographic flux; generational cleavages; the reinvention of the pop music industry; and the ongoing struggle to enrich the lives of ordinary youth.

Book Description

In The Spiritual Universe, Fred Alan Wolf brings the most modern perspective of quantum physics to the most ancient questions of religion and philosophy. Taking the reader on a fascinating tour of both Western and Eastern thought, Wolf explains the differing view of the soul in the works of Plato, Aristotle, and St. Thomas--the ancient Egyptian's belief in the nine forms of the soul, the Qabalistic idea of the soul acting in secret to bring spiritual order to a chaotic universe of matter and energy, and the Buddhist vision of a "nonsoul." Wolf also mounts a defense of the soul against its modern critics who see it as nothing more than the physical body.

2 out of 5 stars Please be cautious..........2007-07-12

If you are curious about quantum physics, read books by Werner Heisenberg or Max Born or David Bohm. I you are curious about relativity, read books by Albert Einstein or Max Born or Hans Reichenbach or Wolfgang Pauli. Read books by Richard Feynman. A great source for these is the Dover books catalog.

Learn about these topics from the masters. These "pop-physics" books have a certain appeal, but be careful about speculations and the combination of science with spirituality. It can be entertaining to read these books, but keep a healthy skepticism.

2 out of 5 stars Hopefully this Remains only One Physicist's Vision.......2007-06-19

I'm glad to see this book has people thinking about the concepts Fred presents. However, the book has more than one fatal flaw. Read this, but also read Frank Tipler's The Physics of Christianity.

Now, I'm not implying Tipler's book is flawless. It isn't. But both books help the reader to grasp a clearer picture of what physics actually IS saying.

My advice... whenever you read a claim that seems new to you, look for a reference in the endnotes. If the reference seems reputable, fine, if questionable, question the assertion. In either case, keep reading as new books are published. The definitive book hasn't yet been written on this subject.

3 out of 5 stars Is this book fatally flawed?.......2007-02-14

After reading Cynthia Larsen's review, I was very intruiged and went and gave this book a good look. What intruiged me about Cynthia's review was her report that the book has the notion that the individual soul is an illusion, that there really is only one universal soul we all participate in. I've felt this way for decades, which drew me to looking more closely into the book.

But about chapter 4, Fred Wolf reveals a fatal flaw in his fundamental premise, which is that the universe expands for billions of billions of years and then begins to contract. Fred claims that his entire argument is based on this assumption. Well, when he made it, it had as good a chance as the the opposite idea that the universe would go on expanding forever. In a footnote to the second edition, he mentions that this fundamental premise has been questioned by recent theories but that the jury was still out. Unfortunately, it no longer is. The most recent and very compelling evidence is that the universe some billions of years ago passed into a phase of ever increasing accelerated expansion. Those are the observed facts. The theory behind it is wrapped up in the idea of dark energy, a (probably) constant anti-gravitational force that has existed since the big bang and will continue forever, gradually causing the entire universe to evaporate into nothingness.

So much for Tipler's notion of the eventual contraction of the universe "squeezing" it back into infinitely rich life in the distant future. Wolf seems to depend a lot on Tipler's ideas along this line.

However, if we taken an even larger view that encompasses our particular universe, there is now the notion that the universe is only one of an infinite number of others that always have existed and always will exit. Within that context, the notion of their being only one soul of which each of us is but a dim reflection still has life. Perhaps Wolf will come out with a new book and salvage his original insight of the "one soul" that will not depend on a scientific theory that has been falsified.

And indeed the notion that there is only one soul is more of an insight than a belief or speculation. The challenge of explaining this insight is twofold. First, explaining what it means. This first part is very important and would thoroughly explain the difference between an insight and a speculation and why this is the former and not the latter. Second, rationalizing it in terms of the latest scientific theory, to show that it is not contradicted by the facts that we know about the way the universe actually is. This of course is what Wolf tried to do. The problem is he based it on a scientific theory which has now been falsified. Time to go back to the drawing board.

2 out of 5 stars Something is missing in this quantum, spiritual universe.......2005-05-04

I had previously read Fred Allen Wolf's "Parallel Universes" and was intrigued to read about his quantum understanding of the soul. "The Spiritual Universe" begins with a detailed review of the opinions of Plato, Aristotle, and Buddha, among others, concerning the nature of the soul. Apparently Wolf hasn't heard of a fellow named Jesus Christ who did not make the cut for any historical quotes on the nature of the soul. Then again, maybe he had some graduate students doing the heavy lifting work on the book and we all know that physics majors generally aren't known for being well-rounded in the academic sense. Honestly, I found this introduction incredibly tedious rather than enlightening. At the time it seemed like Wolf had arrived at his final conclusions about the nature of the soul while drinking a decaf caramel Macchiato at Starbucks one day and merely required some filler material, much like a typical, well padded undergraduate thesis.

Plodding through this book requires two talents: the tenacity of a polar icebreaker coupled with the gin guzzling gusto of the former captain of the Exxon Valdez. Laboriously cutting through the book like a Toro like a lawnmower with a dull blade, it seemed like I was on a scavenger hunt seeking something resembling substance. To be fair-minded, Wolf does say in his first sentence that this is not an easy book for a scientist to write. He sure delivered on that statement.

Several credible topics were entirely lacking in his tapioca-thick tome. First, it would seem incredibly intuitive that the average person might equate spirit, or soul, with the concept of ghost. Spirits have been the cornerstone of human mythology, tradition and folklore throughout history. I was mildly interested if Prof. Wolf had any insights from the study of quantum physics that might shed some light on why peoples from all cultures have reported seeing spirit or ghost manifestations. This topic was never addressed. Equally disappointing was the fact that Wolf completely ignored any discussion of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near death experiences (NDEs), or after death communications (ADCs) as evidence of a spiritual or soul state. There is an amazing amount of fascinating literature on these subjects. On a purely personal level, it is difficult to not find at least one person at a cocktail party that has not had some kind of unusual or deeply spiritual experience being reunited with a recently deceased loved one, most frequently during the dream state. I would have been greatly interested in learning what light quantum theory might shed on the viability of ADCs. Could heaven be a parallel universe created from the void by conscious thought? One of the great centers for scientific study for evidence of the continuance of consciousness, the life of the soul after the death of the body, is at Human Energy Systems Laboratory at the University of Arizona. Wolf mentions that he spoke at a conference there yet never discusses any aspect of the academic work on the viability of consciousness after death of the body by scientists like Dr. Gary Schwartz or others. It begs the question, how does one write a scientific examination of the soul without addressing the current research being conducted on the subject? Wolf saves his best for last with his discourse on Bass's Proof and the story about something called Robotina. To be fair, Wolf does warn the reader that he had simplified the material in chapters 7-12 to make it a bit easier to digest.
Well, if you can get through the story of Robotina without drinking the bong water and inserting flaming bamboo slivers under your fingernails you've got my admiration. Sadly, this book is a feckless stinker that will render insensible even the most ardent readers. In the words of Clara Peller, "Where's the beef?" I only recommend the book if you are suffering from acute insomnia and need something innocuous to help kick in the effects of a Nyquil Rusty Nail cocktail to promote a restful nights sleep.

4 out of 5 stars mind opening..........2003-12-28

This is a great book combining metaphysics and quantum physics! This book would deserve five stars but Dr. Wolf did not provide sufficient examples to explain difficult concepts. I do not mind re-read sentances or even pages to have a deeper understanding of the concepts and this book opened my eyes to the spiritual universe.

Book Description

Wendy, a teacher and young Christian woman, is accustomed to living the good life with her wealthy husband. But when she is devastated with the news that her husband has given her a sexually transmitted disease, and she is pregnant, Wendy struggles with the choice to stay or leave. In the midst of Wendys trials, her sister, Kim, and mother, Marlene, support her emotionally, physically, and spiritually, despite Wendys attempts to hide all of the problems that plague her. She has always striven to set a good Christian example for Kim, who is disillusioned with the church because she feels it has condemned her for being an unwed mother. To complicate matters, Kim is scorned by her God fearing grandmother, Francis, who has a few skeletons in her own closet.

3 out of 5 stars Charming....but a little drawn out.......2007-10-03

This was a charming and sweet Christian-based story. The book was beautifully written but kind of drawn out and lengthy. A lot of narrative description about insignificant events caused the novel to be a little tedious to read at times. Halfway through the novel, I started skimming pages until I got to the end. Still, I commend Ms. Sanders for writing a book with a strong Christian message.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Read.......2007-08-19

Ms. Sanders did a wonderful job on her first novel. I truly enjoyed reading this book. This book is about lies, and deception. It's about how people try to handle situations themselves without bringing it to God. I do have to agree with some of the reviewers that it had a couple of slow moments but all in all I still enjoyed the book.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Page Turner.......2007-06-03

Soul Matter is a story about love, secret and lies. A little slow at times but keep reading it is worth finishing.
I look forward to the author's next novel.

5 out of 5 stars True page turner honey...you hear me??.......2007-04-30

Toward the end of the book when everything started coming together it had a sista talking out loud so much that my co~worker was like "i have got to get that book"..LOL! i really enjoyed the way the author used real time issues, and still managed to get the things of God in and what God's desires for our lives ..GO GIRL! this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars "Soul Matters" is Food for the Soul .......2007-02-11

This was an awesome debut novel for the author. This book exposed the "lukewarm" Christians of today. It gave all facets of the Christianity Stuggle. From how do you react when the water gets hot? How do you handle the skeletons rattling in your closet? How to fix a back stabbing "friend"? What can happen when you jump to conclusions and not have the "Fruits of the Spirit" working in your life? This book has it all. A great read. The flow, intrigue and element of surprise of the book keep it very interesting. Ironically, it was the man initially labeled "the dog" in the story line, who proved to have more moral values than the self proclaimed "do good righteous women". After reading this book you are sure to understand someone in your life just a little bit better. Keep up the good work Yolanda! The Regal Sister's are anxiously awaiting your next novel.

I just began reading Soul Matters for Women and love everything about it -- the look and the inspiring stories I have already read. I can't wait to take it on vacation to devour it all. I bought all four titles for gifts.

The format works well for me. Each subject is well "fleshed out" in a short space. They are just the right size and length -- and printed in clear type and nice cover colors. I like well thought out details like that. In a few hours I will be sitting on the beach soaking up the sun and reading Soul Matters for Women.

2 out of 5 stars Is the music all that matters?.......2004-03-15

To have a better understanding of this book one must take into account its author's ideology. As pointed out by Edward Macan (whose musicological and sociological analysis is much more superior to Stump's), the ranks of music critics were dominated by neo-Marxists. That explains Stump's preferences and prejudices. Henry Cow and Soft Machine get his praise because of their ideological beliefs rather than their artistic merits (in the long list of acknowledgments, he thanks Chris Cutler for "intellectual inspiration"). Accordingly, Stump's sarcasm towards Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc., is focused mainly on their decadence, not their music. But Stump's objectivity in his venom distribution is skewed too - for example, his bourgeois ways notwithstanding, Bill Bruford (as well as all Stump's interviewees) gets a much better treatment than other members of Yes. Kind of a payback.
Writing a history of progressive rock is quite an ambitious undertaking, and it's hard to expect one person to know everything about the multitude of bands and musicians. Claiming encyclopedic knowledge, Stump can't leave out less-popular-yet-major players. Here Stump's pretense is apparent, as his familiarity with those bands is rather minimal in many instances. Take Gentle Giant. Stump's upcoming book implies that he must be a great scholar of their work, but his overview of the group looks more like a compilation of opinions. At the very first mention, he defines them as a part of "by far the more commercially successful form of Progressive rock" (page 97). This statement should not even be contested because of its obvious fallacy. The fact alone that one of their best records, In a Glass House, had never been released in the U.S. as too "uncommercial" leaves no uncertainty about their moneymaking success. Their statement about "blatant commercialism", ridiculed by Stump, really reflects their approach towards music. Stump repeats every silly epithet used by critics (except for "pretentious") and then refers to Jan-Paul van Spaendonck whose opinion he evidently respects and whose high praise is in total contradiction with Stump's pearls. This dualism reveals his total lack of knowledge of the subject. He is tempted to side with the majority, but few respected voices confuse him. So it came out pretty confusing and quite pathetic too.
Stump's interpretation and philosophizing of the social side of the movement is rooted in his ideology. It's full of customary Marxist truisms, and is pretty shallow and weak.
On a minor note, Stump's universally praised vocabulary is an intellectual show-off, a sign of self-infatuation, typical for unrecognized self-achievers. A standout evidence of that is his comparison between prog "big guns" and "ascetic and virtuous Stakhanovites" (page 12). For the record, the Stakhanovites were super-productive workers during the industrial build-up in the Soviet Union in the `30s. These people were neither ascetic nor virtuous. Their only virtue was their productivity. Otherwise, they were quite arrogant because they were well-paid (i.e. rich) and famous. Stump's desire to impress results in his attempts for neologisms and improper use of words ("atavism" and "lumpen" come to mind) as he tries to impose his "intellectual superiority".
All in all, ignore Stump's ideological assault and don't succumb to his pseudo-intellectual pressure, and you have a good historical overview of progressive rock although his pretentious style really spoils it.

4 out of 5 stars More interesting than a bee's nest.......2004-02-16

The book is for very sophisticated readers that have a vast vocabulary, it is definately not for most readers. It gives lots of information on most (if not all) prog rock bands from Europe. Like any other book about music it is biased towards some bands but in general the author seems honest. I personally was looking for a book which incorporated prog bands from all around the world not just Europe. Also it leaves gaping holes in its chronolgy it appears that nothing happened with prog in the late 80s and 90s. The author mentions that the music wasn't that popular at the time but sill i had hoped for more.

5 out of 5 stars easily the best book on prog available.......2003-08-11

I find this book to be superior to the other two leading works on prog by Macan and Martin, respectively. Macan is a musicologist who admittedly has fallen out of interest with popular music since the time of progressive rock; thus, his book is useful only insofar as he can present a musicologist's opinion about certain pieces. When it comes to putting progressive rock in the context of other music happening simultaneosly, or evaluating progressive rock in terms of rock music history as a whole, Macan is mostly useless.

Martin approaches the subject from a sociologist's perspective, and this is valuable. Also, Martin probably goes into depth with the most individual albums than the other writers. However, Martin's knowledge of the genre is too incomplete, too biased towards Yes and too full of needless Marxist claptrap to be on Stump's level.

Why is Stump's book the best? Well, it's easily the best written of the three -- it's an invigorating, entertaining read. Martin even admits in his own book that he wished he had Stump's facility with language. Secondly, Stump isn't just presenting the history of prog from the rose-colored glasses of a fan. He is a fan, but his goal was to describe what actually happened, and what is worth reconsidering and what is not. The fact is, some prog rock *was* garbage, and Stump is perfectly willing to expose what he thinks fits this bill.

Is the book perfectly comprehensive? No. Stump (like the others) focuses almost entirely on British prog. Also, it is arguable that more information on certain major bands would have been preferable. But that would likely have come at the expense of the wealth of information included on lesser-known artists.

Still, there isn't a more intelligent or accurate volume on progressive rock available, so make this your first purchase on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars The least essential Prog book I've read.......2002-12-29

Stump's The Music Is All That Matters, attempts to describe exactly how Progressive rock in England evolved from its psychadelic beginnings in the late 1960's to its current cult-like status. While highly opinionated, it mostly succeeds in this effort. However, I find it to be the least essential of the books on Progressive Rock that I have read. This is because Stump's writing style is somewhat taxing and I don't find myself gaining a deeper understanding of the music, or discovering new bands to listen too.

I wanted to briefly address some of the comments made by some of the other insightful reviewers.

1-I do believe that Stump thoroughly enjoys progressive rock. He just likes Robert Wyatt, (he sounds like the only person I have ever heard that has actually listened to EVERY Soft Machine album), Henry Cow and The Enid more than Yes, Pink Floyd and ELP. He does present with the bias that somehow if you became popular the music was no longer valid. Now this did happen to the most popular progressive bands as the 70's wore on, but he is also highly critical of the most successful progressive bands better work as well. However, I take his criticism to be that of an insider, one of us. It is like family making fun of each other, its ok when it is with each other. With that said, I question does he really think ELP covered Pictures at an Exhibition because they thought it would make them international pop stars? It was about the music baby (at least in the beginning and I think among the current prog groups). I found myself wanting to apologize to Bradley Smith (Billboard's Guide to Progressive Music) for saying in an Amazon Review that his writing was preachy, cause by comparison, Stump is MUCH more highly opinionated, and much more direct in his presentation that HE knows what is the really good and essential music. (Hey, Ant Phillips seems like a great guy, and Trespass is my favorite Genesis album, but a whole section devoted to him? Some of those Private Parts albums are about as exciting as listening to someone tune their guitar!! That said, go buy Phillip's The Geese and the Ghost- it is a fantastic, sensitive progressive work).

2. Stump's writing is, as other's have pointed out, often difficult. (Who were you trying to impress Stumpy?). I mean, progsters are often educated folk, but only a few of us are actually Professors of literature. It is interesting that Stump has also written a book on Roxy Music because a friend of mine used to say that Brian Ferry sounded like he was singing to hear himself sing/amuse himself. Sometimes I felt like this book was written solely to amuse the author. I found myself comparing the writing to music and coming up with the two following analogies.

1-At times the writing is like those dissonant bits in Henry Cow, you know the ones where you know it has some significance, but you really just keep listening to see if you are strong enough to take it.

2-The best album I could think of to compare the writing to was ELP's Works. Self-indulgent (nothing wrong with some self-indulgence on occassion), bombastic and "clodhopping" in its attempt to be more than it is. Also, so obvious in its attempt to be clever that it at times becomes self-parody. None the less, it is still something I drag out on occassion and thoroughly enjoy bits of.

And that is what I thought of this book. It was often too much work. While there are some amusing thoughts on prog and some prog albums, (some of his criticism of the most popular progressive rock albums is actually fairly humoruous) overall, it isn't an essential read on the subject. But, most progster like to collect things, so you are probably going to buy this anyways. I did.

3 out of 5 stars Critical or Hostile?.......2002-01-20

I have very mixed feelings about this book. Stump has written a well crafted history of the Progressive Rock movement (a daunting task) but has managed to insult most of the movers and shakers. He qualifies his name-droppings with some very nasty adjectives which tended to make me quite angry at times. Very few performers escaped this fate (Fripp and Bruford are the two that come to mind). I grew to question whether he liked the genre at all. His eye is very critical, very very critical.

Nevertheless, the book is an excellent chronological history of the Prog. movement and the fact that he succeeds is commendable.
For me, I am glad that I read it but I prefer Macan's book, in all truth.

Book Description

"One of the most important books on consciousness and cosmology to appear in decades. Anyone interested in questions about soul and nature, about the relationship between consciousness and the world of matter, about meaning in the universe, needs to read it."

Brian Swimme, Ph.D., coauthor of The Universe Story

"Radical Nature exposes the biggest con job in the history of human thought-that matter and nature are dead, mindless, unfeeling, and disconnected from ourselves. De Quincey gives us an image that is as hopeful and fulfilling as the old view was empty and depressing. Never have we needed such a view as now."

Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Beyond the Body

Do animals have souls? Do worms and insects feel pain or pleasure? Can trees feel anything at all? Ever wondered where in the great unfolding of evolution consciousness first appeared? If questions like these intrigue you, you are in good company because they touch on the deepest mystery in modern philosophy and science: How are minds and bodies related? How does consciousness fit into the physical world?

These are not just idle speculations. How we answer such questions can dramatically affect the way we live our lives, treat the natural world and other people, and even how we relate to our own bodies. In Radical Nature, philosopher Christian de Quincey explores how mind and matter are related, and he proposes a radical and surprising answer: Consciousness goes all the way down! Through animals, plants, even single cells . . . in fact, all the way down the great chain of being to molecules, atoms, and beyond. Drawing on both ancient and modern knowledge, de Quincey shows us that the universe teems with consciousness through and through. "Matter itself tingles with the spark of spirit," he says. "And therefore nature, in all its forms and glory, is sacred to its deepest roots." Radical Nature takes you on a mind-stretching journey in this remarkable story of philosophy and science in search of a soul.

Christian de Quincey, Ph.D., is professor of philosophy and consciousness studies at John F. Kennedy University and managing editor of the IONS Review from the Institute of Noetic Sciences. His work on consciousness has appeared in both popular and academic journals, including Journal of Consciousness Studies, ReVision, Network, Cerebrum, and Journal of Transpersonal Psychology. He lives in Half Moon Bay, California.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-01-12

This book is great for beginners being introduced to philosophy and consciousness ideas, as well as seasoned readers of the genre. There is quite a bit of history of Panpsychism (and other world views) given, which the author says could be skipped if you are already familiar with the subject.

The author's writing style is easy to read, and he gives samples of upcoming ideas that keep you motivated to keep on reading. I got the sense that Mr. de Quincey is a talented teacher - I felt like he was giving me a personal lecture (in a good way!) as I was reading.

Although the book is definitely focused and has a point that he is trying to convey, I got the impression that Mr. de Quincey didn't have an agenda that he was trying to push on the reader. While reading the book, I got the impression that the author was taking the reader through the research and thought processes that lead him to his conclusion. It seemed like he came up with this conclusion naturally and rationally, rather than having a the conclusion in mind before starting his own research and gearing his studies towards his opinion.

Because of this, I think this book will appeal to open-minded materialists as well, since Mr. de Quincey presents himself in a very non-New Age manner. He keeps any farther reaching speculation (afterlife ideas, notion of a soul, etc.) to a minimum, which I thought was a refreshing change from the norm in books that propose a more Panpsychic view of the world.

This is the first part of a trilogy, so if you like this one be sure to read the rest.

5 out of 5 stars A Liberating Book for Mind and Body.......2007-01-02

Christian de Quincey's book "Radical Nature" fell into my hands at just about the right time to heighten that curious sense of synchronicity when things seem to have an underlying harmony and purpose, and I thoroughly enjoyed his body of thought.

Perhaps this book arrives at the right time for many people who want to liberate themselves from the clutches of the old materialistic paradigm. It will help them in this endeavor, because Dr. de Quincey respects and appreciates the achievements of all the great thinkers who have come before whether they would have agreed with him or not.

As the great P. Feyerabend has pointed out, philosophers of science often tend to overlook that science itself is a story and not a problem of logic. Dr. de Quincey does not make this mistake. He takes his ideas further and talks of the unfolding story of the cosmos, how it is intelligible to us precisely because we are inseparably connected to it, part and parcel of its essence and its being. We can make sense of it all, because it is sensible; everything, the whole cosmos including its very last spec of matter, is "intrinsically sentient" he declares. Matter and psyche coexist as an inseparable whole.

Dr. de Quincey has labored hard to pull together all the different strands of human knowledge from the fields of science, philosophy and psychology, and he presents them in his beautifully clear understanding. His well argued and carefully outlined thoughts on the nature of matter and consciousness especially the mind/body split are designed to put Humpty Dumpty back together again when nobody thought this could be done. I actually feel liberated and, in some sense vindicated after finishing this book, since it strengthens and validates in strong ways feelings and thoughts I had for quite some time. I learned a lot reading this work, and the best thing is, it actually made me a happier person.

5 out of 5 stars Radical Nature is radically enjoyable by H. Crowe.......2006-10-14

When I read this book, I rushed over to Amazon and bought Christian de Quincey's other book Radical Knowing.

I totally agree with his witty critique of "physics envy" . . . Consciousness is not a sub-atomic virtual energy field although, as he correctly points out, it is the experiencer of energy, of vibrations, of fields, and waves. His slogan "Consciousness knows. Energy flows" says it all.

His thought and writing are so fine and so beautifully intelligent, and I responded with feeling. I particularly want to compliment de Quincey on his amazing explanation of the great philosopher Whitehead. I have heard that he is the hardest philosopher to understand. But Radical Nature does a great job untangling difficult ideas. After reading this, I find Whitehead the easiest philosopher to understand now--particularly the mind-body connection. People should come to this book with a feeling sense . . . reading while listening to our bodies. Dr. de Quincey's teaching has more than a touch of real alchemy. The more I read his books, the more I know I am calibrating a great mind who can communicate in an exciting and profound way. I kept having to put the book down because it inspired cascades of ideas and contexts that made complexity unravel in a life affirming, powerful way. This book, and Radical Knowing perhaps even more, is positively juicy, a term not usually used for top scholarship in consciousness exploration. Dr. de Quincey is particularly adept bringing a grounded, welcoming order to complex, abstract philosophical language. In the end, I landed right where he wanted me to...wanting and able to read and know more. Both books added so much value and richness to my life and merit every bit of attention.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo, de Quincey!.......2006-10-08

In this book, de Quincey's knowledge, experience, passion and scholarship catapults our understanding of consciousness into a view which dissolves boundries between matter and mind. His clarity and eloquence of expression helps to bridge the gap between pure feeling and the written word.

My favorite quote from the book: "Stories Matter, Matter Stories" (also a chapter heading) says a lot about this book which is chuck-full of wisdom. His ideas are well supported and come across with the simplicity of "common sense."

5 out of 5 stars Helpful to me........2006-10-06

This book was a valuable addition to my ongoing search to make sense out of my world. I owned it for some time before I read it. Then I bought Radical Knowing and liked it even better. (I reviewed it in July)

De Quincey puts into words deep feelings I have had all my life about my connection to nature. His research seems to be impeccable. I can only read so much and it really helps to read an author who does so much of it for me.

I am not a scientist or a philosopher so some of the arguments between different schools of opinions don't mean a lot to me. What I enjoy are new ideas put in language that is readable and enjoyable. This book fulfilled those requirements.

Book Description

"Spiritual intelligence is the human capacity to ask ultimate questions about the meaning of life and to experience simultaneously the seamless connection between each of us and the world in which we live."
— Dr. Richard Wolman

The quest for more meaning in everyday life arises in all of us at one time or another. In fact, spirituality can be the touchstone of our lives — a single reliable constant that sustains us through life's most trying moments. Using the current theories of multiple intelligences as his springboard, Dr. Richard Wolman began his research into the nature of spirituality with the belief that each of us has a distinctive "spiritual intelligence." Thinking with Your Soul offers crucial insights into this most important of intelligences and how we can make it work for us.

Dr. Wolman presents the PsychoMatrix Spirituality Inventory (PSI), his groundbreaking system for evaluating the levels and areas of spirituality in people's lives without reference to a specific religious ideology. More than six thousand men and women have taken the PSI. After carefully studying their responses, Wolman identified seven factors that make up human spiritual experience and behavior. They are: Divinity, Mindfulness, Intellectuality, Community, Extrasensory Perception, Childhood Spirituality, and Trauma.

Thinking with Your Soul gives you the chance to take the PSI and examine the resulting profile of your spiritual energy and awareness. For instance, the PSI results may show a strong sense of a higher power but little sense of community. By analyzing the results of our personal PSIs, we can begin to see patterns in our spirituality and to change them if we choose. Understanding our spiritual makeup, strengths, and limitations is crucial to being able to see and improve our personal relationships and our relationship to the world. This insight into our behavior, internal experience, and empathy for the experiences of others gives us a conscious context for our actions and choices.

In addition to catalyzing self-reflection and spiritual awareness, Thinking with Your Soul is a thoughtful inquiry into the spiritual dimension of life, its past treatment by the scientific and psychological communities, and its place in the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, An Intelligent Book about Spirituality.......2002-07-29

Thinking With Your Soul: Spiritual Intelligence and Why It Matters is a masterful blend of science, clinical experience and spirituality. Tackling the difficult, and controversial problem of spirituality, Wolman makes a convincing case for the existence of a new intelligence inherent in the human condition.

I approached this book skeptically, but was soon engaged in the range of topics and fields examined and synthesized. From evolutionary psychology, philosophy, and cognitive neuroscience, Wolman makes accessible the most difficult and complex of issues. He then shows how his new methodology for studying spirituality evolved, not from his preconceptions, but from the minds and hearts of thousands of individuals. This new procedure has wide applications in daily life and also in the consulting room.

The book is written in elegant prose - almost poetic at times - and reveals the compassion and sensitivity Wolman shows to his patients, his students and his colleagues. This is an important book. You will read it more than one time.

1 out of 5 stars Phony Science not Worth the Money.......2002-05-21

Wolman teaches at Harvard University, and like many professors, peddles his books "Thinking With Your Soul" to his students. Unlike distinguished faculty, he avoids questions from us bright undergraduates who challenge him on pseudo-science nonsense from the book-- that which translates into using an entire class period to hand out Tarot cards and have us discuss what they tell about our lives. Tarot cards? From a Harvard professor? If any of us males in the class point out that Tarot cards aren't science, he simply shrugs. Perhaps some of the profits from the book could be used to pay us back for our tuition. And they say Cornel West was goofing off last year? Yet there is a silver lining here: self-help gurus usually maintain their appeal by seeming like they walk the talk: reading "Thinking with Your Soul" gives the impression that Dr. Wolman believes in genuine, humble spiritual insights. Yet watching him lecture about the book, one sees how he is entirely wrapped up in his need for the class to like him and think he's a funny, great guy. Forget about honestly answering the questions posed to him about whether a spiritual dimension exists, he would rather avoid direct confrontations and chatter on incessantly about his personal life. Great news: by taking a course with this book's author you can learn ahead of time that you're not listening to advice from a wisened professional, but handing over hard earned dollars to a man who needs to get his own spiritual house in order. Forget "Thinking with Your Soul" and try to remember that this book deosn't live up to its inspiring title. Pull aside the curtain and you have the great and terrible Oz. The only tricks up this author's sleeve are tarot cards and tenure. Don't be fooled. Think with your wallet.

5 out of 5 stars Spirituality in everyday life.......2001-10-26

I love "Thinking with Your Soul"; it is a wonderful book for anyone interested in expanding one's own spiritual awareness through the acts of living. Dr. Wolman invites the reader to open the door that leads to discovery of the relevance of spirituality for each of us not only within the context of the community we live, but also in relationship to larger questions about the meaning of life. His empirically based investigation unites everyday personal experience with the scientific approach to spirituality. Through PsychoMatrix Spirituality Inventory, Dr. Wolman found a way to measure spiritual intelligence not in the terms of numerical value, but as a developmental dimension which increases and deepens with life experiences. For an interested reader, the book is a pleasure to read. "Thinking with Your Soul" turns examining of one's own spirituality to a highly attractive endeavor. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2001-07-01

Unless you are brand new to issues of spirtuality, this book weill seem simplistic and unsatifying.

5 out of 5 stars BELONGS IN EVERY SPIRITUAL COLLECTION.......2001-05-29

This book is expertly crafted, beginning with explanation of the categories of intelligence as postulated by leading psychologists, continuing with his contention that there is a spiritual intelligence, an explanation of how his test was developed, and then the test itself along with evaluations of the results. The reader learns more of himself, and where he is in the seven aspects of spiritual intelligence, how to increase his awareness in some aspects if desired...

I love books with short stories about life, it's a very positive upbeat book and helps you see things in a different light.

It's full of good humor and good advice.

As one of the contributing authors, I'm proud to be part of this Soul Matters series. Even if I didn't have a contribution, I'd buy it for the beauty, wisdom, and practicality. It's definately on my gift-giving list.

If you're looking for a treasure to encourage a woman in any season of momhood, this book is packed with stories that pass along wisdom and hope. The lavender textured cover is sturdy enough to survive a long, hot soak in the tub (I speak from experience.)

Inside are 40 short chapters on relevant topics moms of all generations deal with today, such as blended families, caring for aging parents, teaching faith to our children, seeking forgiveness, and simplicity.

Here's a book moms can enjoy reading for themselves, and it also makes a useful tool for group settings. Each section begins with three introductory questions that help relate the topic to your own life. Then there's a quick Bible lesson that is designed to stimulate thinking and spiritual growth. Next is a real-life story by a mom who encountered a struggle and found God's help and wisdom to get through it. This is followed by an action step for readers to take, as well as a prayer.

Having a book like this one can help simplify the task of leading small group discussions, Bible studies, Sunday school classes, and mentoring relationships. At the Soul Matters website, you'll find a complimentary leader's guide that covers ten of the topics in the book.
