Book Description

Getting a young child to go to sleep and stay asleep is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. Yet many parents resign themselves to enduring years of exhaustion. Practical help is not easy to find, and much of the available advice stresses letting even very young babies "cry it out," an option that is not comfortable for many parents. Kim West, known to her clients as The Sleep Lady®, has developed an alternative and effective approach that is gentler on both parent and child. West emphasizes that sleep is a learned skill and explains how parents can teach children to sleep, even at an early age. She starts with newborns, showing parents how to avoid sleep problems from the beginning. And she has solutions for older babies and children who have developed poor bedtime, nighttime, or nap time habits. The Sleep Lady method—including a gentle, practical, step-by-step program called The Sleep Lady Shuffle—has proven effective for hundreds of families. West has spent more than a decade successfully teaching parents how to help their children sleep soundly and independently through the night. She provides specific, achievable guidelines that work, while also taking into account the values, lifestyles, and parenting styles unique to each family. Most parents who adopt The Sleep Lady Shuffle see dramatic improvements in a few weeks, if not days. Good Night, Sleep Tight contains age-specific chapters from birth through five years old, in which West succinctly outlines what action to take; discusses important developmental changes; provides sample waking, feeding, and napping schedules; advises how to use The Sleep Lady Shuffle; and lays out common problems and solutions. Included throughout are real-life testimonies and anecdotes from parents West has assisted. Good Night, Sleep Tight also discusses co-sleeping, bedtime strategies for twins and siblings, and dealing with nightmares and illnesses. West even offers tips on how to minimize sleep disruption when families travel or experience other breaks in routine. Essential reading for any tired parent, or any expectant parent who wants to avoid the pitfalls of sleeplessness, Good Night, Sleep Tight offers a practical, gentle, easy-to-follow remedy that will work for all families in need of nights of peaceful slumber.

2 out of 5 stars Not "Gentle".......2007-10-10

I was told that this was an alternative to the CIO method but it really isn't. You just stay in the room while they scream instead of leaving. It even suggests you keep a towel handy because your child may get so upset that he/she throws up, but if that happens you are still not supposed to pick them up. I don't consider that "gentle".

4 out of 5 stars A good mix of sleep strategies.......2007-09-21

I first read Babywise, which a friend had given me. We started on a flexible schedule with feedings about every three hours. This was very helpful and a good start, but after reading some negative things about the book, I wanted to read some others. There are so many different theories on sleeping and feeding! I found Good Night, Sleep Tight and really liked it because it seemed to be a good mix of the different theories. There are a few main components that almost every sleep book I've read recommends, including having a bedtime routine, putting the baby down drowsy but awake, and creating a sleep friendly environment. This book begins with those basic components and gives you additional information and resources. I like that it gives some guidance as to what a typical schedule might be like, what you might expect, etc. It's also nice to see that what you're experiencing is very normal and that there are things you can do about it. My son started sleeping through the night at about 3 months. Naps are still a little difficult to settle him down for and I just pulled the book out again to get some advice on making naps a little easier. There is a whole section of suggestions. I don't think this is a cry it out book. She creates a middle ground between letting your baby cry and responding immediately. Although we didn't need to do the "Sleep Lady Shuffle" she suggests, so I can't comment on that. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find the "right" way to do things. Read what you can and do what feels right.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-08-25

This is essentially a "cry it out" book, except she recommends staying in the room for the crying part. There is no new information I could find. So utterly not worth it. It seems that this book was written to generate sales for her individual consultation service. If you've read "No Cry Sleep Solution" and "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" you do not need this book. Just meet the ideas in the middle and realize there will be some uncomfortable nights, then spend your money on something worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Not much help for younger babies.......2007-08-24

We bought this book when our daughter was four months old (and had it shipped overnight--we were getting desperate!). It wasn't very helpful, as it turns out. Her advice for babies this age essentially boils down to letting them cry it out, but staying in the room with them. Not particularly helpful, especially since our daughter was more hysterical when we stayed in the room with her than when we left her alone. We ended up doing more of a Ferber approach. No fun for anyone involved, but it worked.

When she was seven months old, we went on a trip, and her sleep schedule got all messed up. We got the book out again, and this time read the chapter on six- to seven-month-olds. This is the age where West introduces her Sleep Lady Shuffle. The idea is that you stay near their crib and "shh-shh-shh" at them, pat their back, whatever. It's a pretty good approach, and it seems to work for our older baby. So if you're looking for advice on how to get your six-month-old to sleep, you'll probably get some good information here. If your baby is three months old, get another book.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-08-21

I needed something to tell me how much my baby should be sleeping and to give some direction on how to help that happen. If you want to or need to impose a schedule on your baby, this book is the least dogmatic I've read. It's also okay if what you want is some general baby sleep information.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Originally written by M. Night Shyamalan as a bedtime story for his own children, the story of the Lady in the Water is an imaginative reading experience that inspires readers to observe the world around them and consider their purpose on earth. Like all of Shyamalans work, this story offers a dark mystery with surprising twists, a touch of magic, and a powerful message at the end.

Since I'm not a child and our own child is in mid-30's, I'll have to stay middle on this rating. It is OK, I think, but if/when a parent attempts to read this story to a child, there is a need for "fill"... so the parent will need to be adequate story teller and not just a reader, depending upon the book to do the parental work. In that setting, I rate it 5 stars, but in the real world, where parents desire more help, it's a 3.

Lady In The Water is an intriguing story about a creature called a narf. Her home is under your swimming pool! She has a purpose! "She is swimming in the pool to be seen by someone in your house." She is a sea nymph and a good creature. Of course, to give some balance to the story, there is also another creature. Something that is called a scrunt and he is not so nice. He lives in the grass and would like to catch the gentle narf.

I find this to be a wonderful and very imaginative story; however, I think this is too scary for young children. I believe it's best for the parents to read it first before purchasing it for their child. Every child is different and parents are best at determining if the subject matter is appropriate for their own children.

I understand the film does not exactly follow the little book, but I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I'm a fan of M. Night Shyamalan's and loved The Village.

This book is really amazing. But I think I would have liked it more if I would have read it first compared to watching the movie first. It also could have elaborated on the story more. But I also don't regret buying it.

Book Description

An acclaimed writer takes readers inside the world of M. Night Shyamalan—the most successful filmmaker of his generation—as he creates a new movie masterpiece

In 1999, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan exploded onto the cinema scene with his supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense, which garnered major acclaim and raked in massive box office numbers around the globe. Since then, his phenomenal commercial and critical success has continued as his films—including Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village—have grossed over $1.5 billion and reinvented the thriller genre. But throughout his rise to prominence, Shyamalan has remained separate from the Hollywood system, living and working solely in his hometown area of Philadelphia, and keeping his ideas, filmmaking techniques, and business practices tightly-kept secrets.

In The Man Who Heard Voices, journalist Michael Bamberger takes readers inside Shyamalan's world for the first time, getting total access to the man who has been called “the modern-day Hitchcock” as he prepares, creates, and test-screens his next film, Lady in the Water, which stars Paul Giamatti (star of Sideways) as a building superintendent and Bryce Howard (star of The Village) as a mysterious sea nymph. Bamberger's intimate perspective and insightful narrative prose will bring to life Shyamalan's creative process—from his multiple drafts and revisions of the screenplay to his on-location work with his cinematographer and crew and his relationships with the actors under his direction. The book also follows the high- stakes business decisions behind the scenes, including his agonizing decision to move from Disney to Warner Bros. for this film, his involvement in the studio's massive marketing campaign, and the evaluation of the crucial initial test-screening of the film.

5 out of 5 stars An unbiased look at the film making process.......2007-04-11

I almost didn't read this book after reading some of the reviews and comments made by others on this site. I'm glad I decided to give this book a chance. This is a must read for anyone interested in the process of film making. The fact that the author is a sports writer and not involved in the film industry gives the book more authenticity, not less. The journey from script to completed film is told through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time and not prejudiced by other films.

I read the book first and then saw the movie (on DVD). If you haven't seen the movie, this is the order I would recommend. You'll especially like the DVD extras after reading about the various collaborators in the book. If the "Lady" script had been submitted by a no-name screenwriter, it would never have made it past the script readers. Yet not only did Night get to make a movie based on a weak story idea with a weak script, he got Warner Brothers to put in over a hundred million dollars to film and market it. No matter how talented the actors, the cinematographer, or the director, if it doesn't work on the page it isn't going to work on the screen. This book shows how bad movies get made.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Ignored Voices.......2007-04-06

After delivering "Lady in the Water", Shyamalan somehow managed to offend a pubescent American culture that prefers to be the offender. And somehow he did it without any pretentious artistic attempts at being shocking through sex, violence and vulgarity. Kind of ironic that it would take a bedtime story to get under the skin of a society plagued with the Peter Pan syndrome. And then he tops it off by having the audacity to let a biographer tell us how he did it. I mean, the nerve of Shyamalan. Why can't he blow his own horn like everybody else?

But that's what happens when one is an artist truly committed to his art. And instead of taking the usual X-Rated route of cage rattling, Night pulled it off with a PG-13 Rating. Impressive.

But to read this book you realize that he paid the price of the much sought after and coveted title of being "controversial" -- even if that wasn't his goal. In fact, from this book we learn that his intentions were the exact opposite. He was hoping to inspire a hopelessly adolescent culture that is hell-bent on being cynical. Because, you know, cynicism is a worthy accomplishment.

Michael Bamberger, the biogrpaher, seems to be somewhere in the middle of this willingness to be inspired and cynical resistance (He admits to having spotted feelings about "Lady"). This makes him more than just a biographer but also a character in his own story. While Bamberger describes Shyamalans vulnerabilities and strengths in the turbulent ride of artistic rejection and redemption, I couldn't help but wonder about Berbengers feelings while acting as a passenger. And he is a passenger. When someone else is doing the driving and your duty is to watch, you have a heightened sense of doom when the driver is irrational and, at times, reckless. Bamberger all too often becomes the rubber-neck passenger watching the chaos that sometimes zooms past Nights peripheral. For instance, the erratic antics of the Director of Photography often occur when Night has left the room.

There is a palpable doom that soaks these pages. Bamberger knew while shadowing Night that the "Lady" was going to show the darker side of herself. The side of her that was a "B*itch." It comes through vividly when he describes Giamatti's late, albiet enthusiastic, acceptance of the role which threw Shyamalan into a mild panic. And that's just the beginning.

One of the recurring themes that Bamberger picked up from Night and migrated into this book is loneliness. Nights loneliness in the development of his movie is so well documented by Bamberger that it becomes experiential for the reader. You'll find from chapter to chapter how loose the strings really were as Night struggled to keep his often reticent players tied together. It's painful to read, because the very people who doubted Night -- and his script -- happen to be on his side. But this is all proof that Night really is the innovator that cynics and critics wish he wasn't. Innovation is inherently a lonely mans game. And naysayers who lack the courage for innovation are always looking forward to seeing the courageous take a loss in their own game.

I think it's safe to say that these same critics are among the voices chattering away in Nights head. That is why, from this book, we learn that Nights personal journey was not just to make a movie, but to silence those voices by being insubordinate. It takes a genius to be a rebel during the day and tell bedtime stories at night.

1 out of 5 stars The Man Who Heard Razzberries.......2007-03-15

I agree that Bamberger could be the greatest satirist living, if that was his intention. The endless verbal oral sex the author performs on his subject...The abject awe...It is truly hilarious.
It's also true that you'll only enjoy laughing at this road apple of a book IF you didn't pay anything for it, as I didn't.
Let us all hope that in the future, M. Night Shamalamadingdong does NOT listen to the same voices that told him to put out "Lady in the Water," AND this book.

3 out of 5 stars I was looking for just a little more..........2007-01-22

I enjoyed this book, but I admit that as I was nearing the middle of it, I started to lose some interest. It began to tell me that the entertainment business is all the hype, egos, and vanity I thought it was to begin with. And it got a bit boring in parts. My interest came back again at about three quarters of the way through. This may or may not be because that is about the time I watched Lady in the Water on DVD. I so enjoyed the movie... it has a great combination of little laughters, mystery, emotion, and storytelling. There were parts and characters that could have been developed better... I say this after reading the book since I did feel I had a better understanding of the idea behind some characters than the movie portrayed. (This after watching with my husband, who did not read the book... though he liked the movie.)

Interestingly, I think the book's author and Shyamalan are having the same struggles. Both of them have a little trouble getting out of their own way. There are moments when Shyamalan seems to lose it and blame others for his dissatisfactions when making the movie. Bamberger throws in one too many "dude"s and "dig it" type dialogues as well... as if he is trying too hard to portray Shyamalan as an ordinary guy. Paul Giamatti comes across as the wonderful and ordinary guy. Probably because he doesn't think about it, he just is. Shyamalan's reactions to Disney and others seem confusing to me. The folks at Disney did tell him that he could make the movie, yet his attitude was as if they were supposed to treat him like a movie god and not hesitate. In the end it sounds like the movie, the story, could have truly been great if he had gotten out of his own way. He did what he told Cindy Cheung to stop doing... trying too hard and not just letting it happen. It seems like there could have been tremendous gains if the story were kicked around for another year. While I really did enjoy the movie, it could have made the difference from a really good story to an amazing story. I think Shyamalan may have learned from the experience, and as an excellent director, I'm anticipating some amazing movies yet to come in my lifetime.

In recommending this book, it depends on what you want out of it. Definitely a great read if you are interested in moviemaking. Perhaps a learning experience if you are interested in a struggle to do what your own inner voices may be telling you.

On recommending the movie... definitely. Especially if you love magically stories. The look and feel of the movie is well done. Lots of interesting characters. (I loved the Anna Ran and Mr. Drury characters the best.)

In this almost-all-girl reprise of the collaborative fiction Finbar's Hotel, Dermot Bolger skillfully weaves together eight chapters, each contributed by a different Irish writer, into a light, coherent, and highly readable novel about a culture in flux. The old Finbar's had been a dark, unchanging place, a "grade two" businessman's hotel in Dublin smelling of gravy and overcooked meat. The impressive new establishment, owned and renovated by the not-quite-respectable Dutch wife of a rock star, is a symbol of 21st-century Ireland--unquaint and anonymous, its chilly white surfaces are indistinguishable from those of a Hilton or a Marriott, despite the "Irish Bar" tucked into one corner of the lobby as a sop to tourists. Bolger is the only man among the writers included, and it is to his credit (or a handsome rebuttal to the old argument about "men's" and "women's" voices in fiction) that we can't tell his contribution from the others. None of the chapters lists its author--a brilliant if unsettling device--so that readers are left wondering whether the bestselling Maeve Binchy, for example, can be distinguished from Anne Haverty and Éilis Ní Dhuibhne, both of whom write poetry as well as prose. Other contributors are Kate O'Riordan, Deirdre Purcell, and Dublin natives Clare Boylan and Emma Donoghue.

Most of the female protagonists are returning to the Dublin of their youth after finding success elsewhere: a former maid comes back to meet the son she gave up for adoption; a faded movie starlet's luck takes a strangely positive turn; a nun looks for a man to sleep with. In "Da Da Da--Daa," an up-and-coming designer tries to corner the Dublin market for her soft, Celtic-inspired fashion line, and instead must endure a long encounter with her mentally ill father. Looking anxiously around the lobby as her room is being readied, Poppy realizes the risks she is taking just by showing up again in the city of her troubled childhood. And if she cannot make her mark as a designer in Dublin, what will success anywhere else mean? But at least for a moment, her assistant takes her mind off her own problems:

He returned her smile confidently, but he was mincing like a camp poodle, so she knew he was nervous. First time to Ireland for this second-generation Bronxer. Secretly, he'd expected to be lynched. So he swaggered, flaunting the homosexuality that had so repelled his Roscommon father. So nervous, he couldn't yet see that the fabled Ireland of his youth, the endless, monotonous, force-fed sentimentality of his parents, had no bearing on this new country. For all the world as though he couldn't see the blatant y.e.s. tattooed on the buttocks of the porter's young assistant.
Although the early chapters of Ladies' Night read more like short stories than the opening of a conventional novel, Bolger teases the reader with recurrent scenes and characters, so that the final stories bring satisfying conclusions to several mysteries--and not a few surprises. --Regina Marler

Book Description

A year has passed since the closing of Finbar's Hotel, a down-on-its-heels hotel on the Dublin quays. Now, with a rock star as its new owner, it has once more opened its doors-and Finbar's has become an ultra-chic gathering spot. Ladies' Night at Finbar's Hotel describes one night in its newly illustrious surroundings-a night filled with adventure and comic romp. In one room a man surreptitiously helps his wife's friend get pregnant, while next door a businesswoman battles her father. And down the hall, a nun struggles with the most important mission of her life. A fabulous mix of pathos and high humor, this is a sardonic tour of the gamut of human experience told by Ireland's finest modern storytellers. Maeve Binchy has written numerous bestsellers, most recently Tara Road. Dermot Bolger is the author of six novels and edited The Vintage Book of Contemporary Irish Fiction. Clare Boylan has written six novels and several nonfiction works, including The Literary Companion to Cats. Emma Donoghue is the author of Stirfry and Kissing the Witch, among other works. Anne Haverty's writing has been short-listed for the Whitbread Award. ƒilis N' Dhuibhne has published poetry, short fiction, children's books, and two novels. Kate O'Riordan writes for stage and screen, and has written two novels including The Bray House. Deirdre Purcell recently adapted her novel Falling for a Dancer as a four-part serial for BBC television.

3 out of 5 stars Chick Lit, or a Victim of Sequelitis?.......2003-12-30

An old adage says that some good things are better left alone - and I've certainly found this to be true here, because although this "Finbar" sequel was devised and edited by Dermot Bolger, who also oversaw the original project, I cared decidedly less for this book than I did for the first "Finbar" compilation.

The entries here strike me more or less as what is known as classic "chick lit": there is, among others, a woman trying to get pregnant for the first time shortly before menopause without having to marry, a freshly liberated woman confronting the guy who suppressed her in a relationship years ago, and a mother reuniting with the son she gave up for adoption shortly after his birth out of wedlock. Alas, all of this has been done before, and in many instances better and with more original plotlines than here.

One characterization that does stand out among the rest, though, is that of a father who, in many respects at his wits' end (even quite literally so), pays a last visit to his career-woman daughter in a desperate effort to retrace the steps of his life and find again what they both have lost. (Room 102: "Da Da Da - Daa.") You might argue that as a type he, too, is an Irish cliche and in fact, would have been so long before Frank McCourt resurrected them in "Angela's Ashes;" and I would not fight you over the issue. Worse yet, I found the daughter and her fashion world entourage to be so badly stereotyped that I was actually ready to slam the book shut a couple of times halfway through the story. Yet, something about the father truly touched me. - I also thought that this story and "The Debt Collector" (Room 103) had the only truly well-done endings in the book; most of the others either fizzled out rather half-heartedly or came to a sudden, abrupt and more or less random stop.

Unfortunately, in this and also in other respects the obvious centerpiece of the book, "The Master Key" (Room 105) - the story which is designed to hold the book together in a similar fashion as does "The Night Manager" in the first "Finbar" book - is particularly disappointing. It is also the biggest offender as far as consistency with regard to the recurring characters and the hotel's history are concerned; for example, the rather seedy and not at all respectable place of "Finbar I" is suddenly is described as a (still somewhat run-down, but essentially honorable) hotel for families and traveling salesmen right around the same time when "Finbar I" had clergy, cops and the underworld converge in the hotel's very own back rooms.

My overall favorite entry is the story taking place in the penthouse, "Tarzan's Irish Rose," which is charming in an offhand fashion while at the same time sporting a rather sarcastic tone. Stylistically well-done and driven by an emphatically drawn, quirky protagonist is also "The Wedding of the Pughs" (Room 106); but alas, this story, too fizzles at the end and left me thinking "What? That's it?" Overall therefore, "Finbar II" unfortunately cannot sustain the high level set by the original "Finbar's Hotel" collection. It is an only mildly entertaining compilation and very inconsistent; both as far as the quality of the writing is concerned as well as with respect to those elements of the contents that are supposed to hold the book together and provide a bridge to "Finbar I."

5 out of 5 stars Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.......2003-07-27

I read this book before the male counterpart - and I thought that Ladies was so much better!

A series of interconnected stories, written by the top Irish women writers, promises for a good, quick, and fun read!

5 out of 5 stars If you loved Finbar's Hotel, read this one.......2003-07-20

Actually, if you loved Finbar's Hotel (a set of intertwined stories set in a Dublin hotel in danger of being demolished, with each 'chapter' written by a different unattributed Irish male author), you've probably already read this. If you haven't read either one, it doesn't matter which book you start with; you'll end up reading both of them anyway.
Ladies' Night at FH is seven female Irish writer's response to the first book, and it's a winner. Authors among the 7 include Maeve Binchy and Dierdre Purcell, but it's up to the reader to try to figure out who wrote what. I didn't bother, too caught up in the delicious mini-plots and connections between guests in Rooms 101, 107, 110, and so forth. The neat twist is that the old hotel has been renovated by a rock-n-roll couple and has become The Place to be Seen in old Dublin.
Wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars These stories "unfurl like a skein of cloth".......2003-06-20

This is a fun, light read, the strongest stories being "Da Da Da --Daa" (about a businesswoman's relationship with her elderly, senile father); "The Master Key," a lovely story about a woman, her first love, and long-lost son; "The Wedding of the Pughs," a delightful husband-and-wife settling-their-differences story; and finally "Tarzan's Irish Rose," a rather contrived story about an aging movie star who meets up with her original leading man; this story is the best in the lot.

4 out of 5 stars gimmicky device, but great, hearbreaking stories.......2003-01-28

First: that the authors of the short stories are not identified is a gimmick, and one that is not useful for the American reader unequipped to "guess the author." Second-- the only reason I minded this as much as I did is because the writing was so good!

I would certainly have liked to read more work by the authors of some of the stories, particularly the "Room 102-- da da da-- daa," in which a fashion designer is confronted by her manic-depressive father-- this story is heartbreaking, vivid, has a sense of inevitability and transcendance that is accomplished with amazing speed.

The stories all take place in Finbar's Hotel, once a seedy, traintrack stop, now owned by a rock star and decorated with minimalist cool. But the new decor can't quite hide the hotel's past, and several of the stories involve former residents and workers. The stories were apparently written sequentially as well, as protagonists of early stories are described as peripheral characters in later ones. This is a nice, neat trick that gives the reader a satisfying sense of "aha."

But overall the stories were simply a feast. My only complaint is the anonymity. They vary in style and tone-- "Room 101-- Touchy Subjects" takes on a woman whose best friend's husband has agreed to be a sperm donot, what could be just TV-movie or situation comedy is handled with compassion, humor and a portrayal of what love in marriage really is that is very touching. "Room 103-- the Debt Collector" involves a woman's interview with the man who once ruled her heart and shattered her self-esteem; the reader's knowledge of the woman's real pov as she politely talks to him on the verge of her wedding affords a delicious irony. Other stories involve a nun looking for the right man to sin with, a former maid meeting her illegitimate son, a woman confronting her husband having an affair-- in which she discovers that neither the affair nor her marriage are what she thought they were, and, improbably, an elderly has-been silent film star who trashes the penthouse with a tiger escaped from the zoo.

That last story may be a bit OTT with its whimsy, but don't let the other situations fool you into thinking this is just a literary version of PLAZA SUITE. Each story's real subject is Ireland-- the changing mores, the loss, the gains, the growing pains of the Celtic Tiger. And all the writing is, as they say, garjus.

This book had a good plot and story line, but it was just TOO fictional for me and had alot of unbelievable situations. And to be honest I really wasn't feeling Lady's character. This book was fast paced but had ALOT of speed bumps,I would recommend you pick it up from the library. The ending was ok but could have been better.Oh well!

Tina was a young girl born into the home of an unstable mother who depended on men for her every need. Most of these men did nothing more than sexually abuse her beautiful daughter Tina and her mother told her if she had an orgasm then she wasn't raped. She in fact enjoyed the sexual acts that she performed.

A heartbroken Tina, tired of the abuse and molestation turns to the streets for salvation. She sleeps in subways and on trains and gets a part time job at a local Donut Shop. The Donut Shop is where she meets the infamous Cream. Cream is a notorious gangsta from around the way who is revered by all who know him. His lifestyle is gangsta, glamourous, and over the top. Just the floor in his house costed 30,000. Cream nicknamed Tina "Lady" and promised to take care of her.

She was fourteen and naive so she bought the game. Cream turned her into a streetwalking prostitute and soon she became his number one money maker. She rose to the top swiftly and became the First Lady of the Cream Team; one of the most infamous gangs in New York.

Being at the top looked glamorous but she had to murder to prove her loyalty. I won't give away any more of the book but I liked the fact that at the end Lady finds her salvation in Jesus Christ. Cop it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-07-17

This is another great book about magick my McCoy. This is book was reprinted as magick and rituals of the moon so look for it under that name. This book is by far the best moon magick book out there. It explanes every phase and how to hold an esbat, and make magick durring that time. Great for all on the pagan path. The moon is divine and we shall dance in her glory.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book on the goddess and the moon.......2000-07-21

i have a love/hate relationship with edain mccoy's books some of her books are really good like this but some are really bad, like celtic myth and magick. however i enjoyed this book alot it focuses all aspects of the moon goddesses or gods. it talks about the runes and how to celebrate the esbats,as well as drawing down the moon. my favirote part was the chapter on advanced magick.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-12-03

This book, as are most from Edain McCoy, brings a gentle, well-balanced philosophy of love of the Goddess in her various forms into your heart. Again, Edain guides the reader into a relationship with the Goddess that is not critical or restrictive of her tradition. Anyone can read this book and enrich her spiritual union. This is a book you want to hug as much as read. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......1999-07-28

Since I love almost all of Ms. McCoy's books, I guess I'm a little biased. However, I found this book to be very informative and gave me a lot of ideas for the Esbats. I highly recommend it. Bright Blessings to all!!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Informative..........1998-08-04

Although just about any beginner's level book will go into some detail about magick and it's correspondence with the moon, McCoy has managed to bring it all together in a concise book that covers many areas not so thoroughly covered in other books. Correspondences, days, hours and other things needed to help aid you in your magickal workings are contained within, and are a useful source to those wishing to learn more on the subject.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-08-10

This book was okay. All of the women had secrets that they were keeping from each other. It kind of reminded me of the tv show Girlfriends. The author used "diva" and "witches" so much I thought I was going to go crazy. Other than that, it was an okay, easy read.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy..........2007-07-28

This book was definately one of her sexiest novels to date. I did find myself comparing it to 'These are my confessions' though. Maybe it's because I read it not to long ago or because 'Ladies' Night Out' was like a confessional for these women. I could have also used a little more story/plot to get me to and from the next sex scene! (Wait... did I just say that??) LOL!!

These women definately had some pretty interesting sex lives and some pretty interesting secrets!! I was wondering how everything was going to go down at the end. I can definately see a sequel if Electa chooses to do so. Bottom line, this book is worth your time. It's a fast and sexy read with not a whole lot of thinking needed to get through it.

5 out of 5 stars Freaky Secrets!.......2007-07-22

Four girlfriends Meshell, Tonya, Tracee and Lexie invite the reader to be a fly on the wall at their regular "Ladies Night Out" meetings. Confident, sexy and single these ladies have exiting careers; Assistant District Attorney, Wine distributor, Professor of English and a Psychologist respectively. These divas embrace their friendship and use their meetings to bond and share their freaky secrets, while having a good time.

But all is not revealed in these gatherings. Each diva has another side to her that has been kept hidden from the others. Deep dark secrets are being played out on the sly...
When these taboo events and played out fantasies threaten to impede on their daily quality of life, a major meeting is called where these ladies bring their erotic confessions and reveal their inner insecurities out in the open making this one explosive Ladies Night Out!

A story where the meaning of friendship is explored in a sexy, erotic, exciting way while sending a clear message on the risks one will take in the pursuit of happiness or at least what they think will make them happy!!

Kudos to Electa for writing an enjoyable story...and keeping it real.

4 out of 5 stars What A Night.......2007-06-22

This book boasts the same old stereotypes that most men are intimidated by successful, professional black women, thus these women find themselves single in spite of their naughty desires. Entertaining nonetheless, but too many loose ends. Whatever became of Derrick? Did Lexie finally cave in to her intimate desire to see him again? Did she answer the question he presented in his final email? Did Brad ever leave his wife for Tonya? Did Tracee and Brandon ever hook up? What became of Meshell and her lustful ways? The book ended on a cute note with the women confessing their dirty secret to each other in an "I got your back, girl" kind of way, but I found myself searching for more pages to bring the heat full circle.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy But Tasteful.................2007-05-25

Ladies' Night Out was a sexy read. It captured the monthly get together of four sorority sisters as they tackle their professions and the single life. Though they each have very different lifestyles, they all have one thing in common: their friendship.
Lexie is the church-bred, all American good-girl who has lived her whole life trying to please her mother and her father who lead one of the biggest African-American churches in Atlanta. Everything in her life is in order except one thing: She's never had an orgasm at almost thirty.

Tonya grew up dirt-poor and that is why she loves her expensive lifestyle. Designer clothing, jewels, cars, and a high profile job as a wine-buyer. She is truly the Queen Bee, but will her pursuit of money leave her heart broken in the long run??

Tracee was once overweight. With a strenous fitness regimen and a healthy diet, she has a killer figure that she loves to show off to the world----literally. Her exhibitionist ways are getting more and more risky. Will she invite danger into her household?

Meshell is the dynamic lawyer. She handles high-profile cases and is admired by everyone. She seems to be the most level headed person of the whole group. 4 out of 5 stars Stillwatch.......2002-02-19

If you enjoy these suspenseful books, then this is the book for you. It's a book about a woman named Pat, who is a reporter for a local cable news station that is doing a segment on Senator Abbigal Jennings and how she may become the first female Vice President. Along the way she comes into problems. Pat is starting to get threats about the airing of the segment. What could the Senator be hiding that could put herself at danger to not get elected the first female Vice President?

5 out of 5 stars Where are the children.......2002-01-03

I have to say that the book started out pretty slow, but it got more and more interesting as you read it.
I have read several suspense books by this author, but I have to say that I believe that this is the best ever.

4 out of 5 stars Mysteriously interesting.......2001-06-26

Being an ardent Agatha Christie fan, Mary Higgins Clark was recommended to me and this was the first volume of her books that I read.

There aren't any detectives like Hercules Poirot or Miss Marple still the stories keep you glued to the book till you reach the end.

'Weep no more, my lady' has a certain Christie's touch. The story is about a young woman Elizabeth. Her sister, Leila is murdered and Ted, her sister's fiance is convicted, with Elizebeth being the only witness. There are other charachters like Leila's friend the Baron and Baroness, her agent, another rival actress. The interesting thing is that each charachter has some motive for the murder. And finally the real murderer turns out to be... (You have to read the book to find out).

'Stillwatch' is about a young reporter who is making a television documentary. But what she does NOT know is that this documentary is linked to her past and will affect her present life. Not much of a mystery here but still an interesting read.

'A cry in the night' reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho and hence the reason for 4 stars.

A good selection for those who have a preference for mysteries (minus politics, violence and sex).

5 out of 5 stars mary higgins clark.......2001-01-07

i find her books so engrosing that i can not put them down until i find out who did it. her method of delivery always leaves you guessing. i would recommend these books highly to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Better selections....2 out of 3.......2000-09-25

I read all stories & enjoyed most of them. I would say, this is a 4 1/2 starrer. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that I didn't like the "Cry in the Night" so much. Had it been "Where are the Children", I would have given it a 10 star rate, if there is such a thing :-)Moreover, I like the compilation here better than the other MHC trilogy.

After reading 6 MHC stories in a row, I am becoming familiar with her style & events albeit characters taking on different forms. Nevertheless, her books are interesting & will make you lose track of time.
