This early novella from Mikhail Bulgakov, published in 1925, already shows the surreal comic genius that later produced The Master and Margarita, the writer's masterpiece. A kind of Frankenstein parable, Heart of a Dog is the story of a stray dog that gains a human intelligence after a prominent Moscow professor transplants human glands into the unfortunate canine's body.

Book Description

This hilarious, brilliantly inventive novel by the author of The Master and Margarita tells the story of a scroungy Moscow mongrel named Sharik. Thanks to the skills of a renowned Soviet scientist and the transplanted pituitary gland and testes of a petty criminal, Sharik is transformed into a lecherous , vulgar man who spouts Engels and inevitably finds his niche in the bureaucracy as the government official in charge of purging the city of cats.

5 out of 5 stars Bulgakov still at his best.......2007-04-30

Bulgakov is one of those unique writers, he can write about social issues without being condenscending, satire without being elitist and boring he has the ability to keep the readers attention and write books some like this in spite of their short size will make you want to read and read again.

Bulgakov lived in one of the most turbulant times of the 20th century and in one of the most turbulant nations of that era yet wrote with such humour and style that it gives faith that the human spirit can never be broken.

In heart of a dog he can touch upon the social life in communist russia, the shortage of space and accomidation, the interference in every day life of the government and yet carry it through with humour only the Russians possess.

By this book, you will be laughing all the way through and only when you get to the end will you realise you have learned a little bit more about life during Communism in Russia.

5 out of 5 stars unsubtle rebuke?.......2006-11-10

Censored by the state apparatus, there are a number of targets in this satire. As much a social satire in the vein of Metamorphosis or science Frankenstein; he concludes the base wants of food and beer are not so much different than the base wants of a respectable doctor- a large apartment. Power and control are are illustrated in several different ways.

4 out of 5 stars The Soul of a Political Satirist.......2006-04-01

Tentatively, this is the story of the after-effects of the transplantation of the Brain,Pituitary and testes from a man to a dog. The dog becomes a crass foul mouthed ingrate (but the parts were taken from a criminal...so take that Stephen King).

In reality it is a roman a clef of the expect (by Bulgakov) failure of the Bolshevics to create a "New Soviet Man". For the creation of the new man is still done with the same old faulty parts. Stalin was purported to say that the only way to create the new "Soviet Man" was to get rid of all the old ones (which he made a great try at, killing maybe 40 million or so over thirty years).

Keeping in mind that Bulgakov, was born and educated under the Tsar and lived through WWI and then the Civil War, he understood who and what Russians were. They were a half-civilized, illiterate and superstitious people who had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the sixteenth century and into the twentieth.

But who says you can't have fun along the way!

5 out of 5 stars An Absurd Masterpiece.......2006-01-20

Completed by Bulgakov in 1925, this short story remained unpublished in the Soviet Union for almost sixty years. When it finally appeared on Soviet bookshelves in 1987 it became an instant hit and is arguably seen as on of the author's most hard-hitting novels. Not for nothing did Stalin's censors deem this book too sensitive for publication.

`The Heart of a Dog' is the absurd story of a stray dog, who is taken in from the streets by a well-known, well-off Professor named Philip Philipovich Preobrazhensky in order that he may attempt a groundbreaking operation; the transplantation of human testicles and pituitary gland into the dog. The operation is successful; however the Professor has produced an intolerable being which resembles a human of revolutionary sentiment with a dog-like penchant for chasing cats.

The story is enjoyable in and of itself, and one must congratulate Bulgakov for his imagination and inventiveness - forced upon him by the oppressive intellectual climate of his time - in thinking up such a tale. In addition, It is very easy to read and interesting for its portrayal of the atmosphere in a bourgeois household in 1920s Moscow. There are also a number of other levels to the book and various interpretations of what Bulgakov's true message was. It is worth noting, for example, that Professor Preobrazhensky's name is a derivative of the Slavic word for `transfiguration', and the book is ostensibly about failed attempts to improve upon human nature. Thus, Bulgakov may be seen to be either ridiculing Soviet attempts to create communist supermen or attacking science's interference with nature. Finally, another interpretation of the story sees it as a parable of the 1917 Revolution in which things were set into motion which became almost uncontrollable.

`The Heart of a Dog' is a classic story of great intellectual value, which deserves to be read and which is immensely enjoyable for its absurdity, humour, and political message(s).

5 out of 5 stars subliminal messages.......2004-10-23

This is one of Bulgakov's greatest work. It presents the reader with a critical commentary on the state of the society (primarily its cultural development) in the Soviet Union. Perhaps the most important question that the author tries to answer in this book is as follows, "What does it take to be a human being?"

This is the one book that anyone interested in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers must have. It is accurate, informative, delightful to read and a beautiful book to own.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough History.......2005-10-29

This is a good book to read if you want to know more about how the Wheaten came to be, tracing its history and breeding from Ireland to the US. It also offers some great information on grooming and showing the breed. It's a lovely book which includes some very nice color photographs, written by a woman who definitely knows what she's talking about!

I do not yet own a soft coated wheaten terrier, but I found this book incredibly helpful. It backed up most of the information I had already learned about wheatens. There were a few questionable comments (diet, grooming) but the book was well-written, and easy to understand.

Book Description

Meet Bear, an American hero.

Bear, an eleven-year-old golden retriever, and his dad, Scott Shields, answered the minuteman call for help on 9/11.

What can one say about a dog that has been honored by the United States Army, had music composed for him by the Queen of England's Scots Guards, had three states proclaim days in his honor, had his photo hung in the United Nations as a "Hero to Humanity" for World Peace Month, AND received the "Hero Dog of the Year Award" from the International Cat Association?

Written by Scott Shields and Nancy West, this heartwarming book is a celebration of the human/canine bond.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Love Story For The Whole Family.......2006-08-11

My husband and I purchased the book as a gift for our son to read on our vacation to Marthas Vineyard. It is a loving tribute to Mr. Shields golden retriver Bear and his mother Honeybear. It highlights the darkest days of September 11,2001 but it also speaks to the loving bond between a man and his dog. This is a story for the whole family. I have now purchased several more copies to donate to our school and our library.

2 out of 5 stars Nancy West Brings Bear Alive.......2006-08-09

It is obvious that Nancy West is a very clever and talented writer. Her ability to infuse Scott Shield's story with pathos and make a heart-rendering portrait of Bear is impressive. Too bad the character she chose to write about has turned out to be so much less than her words and book suggest. Her central character Shields has turned out to be a teller of tall talls in real life, and uses this book to misrepresent himself as a "great hero" of 911. Mr. Shields should stick to the facts of Ms. West's book and stop inventing stories such as "commanding" search teams at Ground Zero, calling himself a "Captain",saying that his dog made live finds and saved the most victims at 9/11.(Good grief even this book says he was only there for 3 days!) This guy even introduces his current untrained dog, Theodore, as Bear's son and parades him around in a search vest. Mr. Shields should try reading his author, Ms. West's, "notes to the reader" on this page so he can learn the facts of his own story. Please, Mr. Shields, stop trying to deceive the public with your tall tales. I give Ms. West's writing "2" stars. Shields character "0"

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great account of a terrible thing that happened and how people and aminals (dogs) helped.......2006-05-30

This is a great book about Bear (and Scott Shields) and how they happened to be at the WTC site shortly after the 9/11 attack. The work they did for some time. People that have their doubts about this book should first of all read it from cover to cover and than check the many references this books gives. I strongly doubt that any of the "nay sayers" have actually done so. Unfortunately there is a lot of "hash-wash" going around the Internet about 9/11. This book is a great account of somebody that has been at the sence and wrote about it. Confirmed by other people that were there and sacrified their time and as many of them have learned later, their health...

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story.......2006-05-18

What a heartwarming story of the love between a man and his dog! This book will make you smile....and make you teary - eyed. I look forward to Scott Shield's next book(hopefully) starring Theodore(able)!

1 out of 5 stars Scott Shields indicted for FRAUD!.......2006-02-25

What are we to think of this self-proclaimed "hero" now that he has been indicted by a grand jury for fraud? I do not think an individual who has been indicted by the federal government for fraudulently obtaining and utilizing post-9/11 rental assistance monies should be considered a hero at all. Mr. Shields has taken advantage of us all (including Nancy West, the author of this book), and using the guise of a 9/11 WTC canine search and rescue hero to do it is particularly disturbing. I would not recommend purchasing this book as it only further supports this con man and his hero facade.

DEX and SUPERDOG (The Heart of a Hero) are the SAME BOOK do not get fooled into buying both. What a RIP OFF!

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Alternative.......2007-06-27

My son has come home from preschool interested in superheroes, but I think he's too young for Spiderman, and other violent, heavily marketed characters. So I was very happy to find this book - it's clever and sweet (Dex uses his superpowers to help other animals - organizing a neighborhood cleanup, for instance, and in the end helping the cat who's been picking on him). My son finds it very funny. And the illustrations by Mark Buehner are, as always, gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrations Are Fantastic!.......2006-11-11

I actually found a bday card with some of the images from this book first and fell in love with Mark Buehner's art style. The art is so amazing. While the story was good, I wouldn't say it's great. Just wanted it to live up to the caliber of the images. That said, it will be a favorite of mine because our little 6 1/2lbs dachshund could have been in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A nice book.......2006-11-04

Engaging and witty drawings. A well written story, with lots of fun and action. This is a top-notch book, and my kindergartener really enjoys it. But why is there a witch flying across the sky?

5 out of 5 stars Superdog, super book.......2006-10-29

We love this book. It demonstrates that to be super takes hard work, but pays off and that being super isn't just about doing "big" things, but little things can be just as super. The ending shows that working together is a win/win for everyone. This book is great for 4-5 year-olds, but my 7-year old loves it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge:Family Ties, Warrior Culture, Commodity Foods, Rez Dogs and the Sacred.......2005-11-28

A group from our church has gone to Pine Ridge on Mission trips for the past three years and we have gotten to know quite a few people there. We always seem to have gained more than we have given during our week stay. This book tells it how it is for much of the population on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is a very helpful book for the leaders of our Mission to share with others that are joining us. We love the people there. They focus on what really matters in life and brings us back to where we all need to live. Most of us are so far removed from nature, family, giving our all to each other. This book shows us how and points out how far removed we are. It really brings questions to the way that I am living my life. It points out just how differently I need to live to become apart of life as Jesus would want me to live it.
Thank you, Vic Glover. And thank you to our Native brothers and sisters.

This is a beautiful collection of short stories and is a real life account of living on in Indian reservation in todays modern times.
Vic Glover has an amazing talent and style of writing that 'just takes you right there'.
With much humour and sadness, Vic takes you on a journey, that whets the appetite, always leaving you wanting to read more.
This is a great read, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is.......2004-12-23

A moving glimpse into the everyday lives of the people that live on Pine Ridge. The blending of Lakota spirituality into the challenges of life in an impoverished society is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge.......2004-12-12

A must read for anyone interested in what life on a western Rez is really about. BroVic captures the humor and pathos of daily life in a marvelously clear, straightforward way that simutaneously makes you wish you were there to share in it and glad that you're not.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Moments.......2004-12-11

I lived on a rez for 7 years, but I could never convey to others the texture of living there. Vic Glover can. This is a beautiful bouquet of real life vignettes, interwoven and told with an honest voice. Vic writes with nothing to hide, and that makes these stories so rich and visceral.

And it's damn cheap, like me. Perfect for Christmas presents. I'm gonna order some more copies.

And if you're considering a change of dog to a smaller breed this book will help you to avoid what could be fatal mistakes. The Irrepressible Toy Dog provides good advice for anyone with a dog, but for the Toy person it's a gift of understanding that will shatter the myth that all little dogs are or should be nasty, snappy brats. Brava!" -Karen L. Overall, MA, VMD, PhD University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Arden has done it again..........2007-01-07

As the owner of 4 small dog rescues, I have found all of Darlene Arden's books extremely helpful and "small dogs, big hearts" is certainly no exception. It is filled with valuable information and should be a must read for anyone who has or is even remotely thinking about getting a small dog. Like all her books, this one is well written in Ms. Arden's easy to follow and understand style. I especially like the fact that this book contains mixed breeds and all the pictures are a wonderful addition.
I applaud Darlene Arden for emphasizing that these small breeds are not toys to be played with, but real dogs with real dog issues and needs.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Resource, Extensive Health Info.......2007-01-02

I was very anxious to get this book. In fact by the time I realized there was a second edition of the Irrepressible Toy Dog, I had been waiting several months. This lead me to several other small dog/ breed specific books. This book is definitely top notch However, I was a little biased having read similar information in several other books before reading this book. This made me less excited about its content, however I have to say that it is extremely well compiled, lots of good information and has the best health section on small breed specific disease that I have seen to date. The picture sections are cute, however it could have included more breeds instead of the same breeds over and over. It however was not as much fun as other books, and lacks in the training section when compared to other books. It is a great overall guide on toy dogs and every toy dog owner should keep a copy for a reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars better than the first.......2006-11-23

The diva of diminutive dogs does it again. This new edition is even better than the first, with more information on socialization and training, and wonderful color photos. Kudos for including small mixes among the purebreds, and for telling everyone that small dogs are real dogs, too. Anyone considering adding a small dog to their household should read this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2006-09-15

This updated version of Ms. Arden's book is a must read for all people who are owned by a small dog. This edition includes several pages of delightful color photos and a a great list of resources for pampering your little dog!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for first-time toy dog owners.......2006-08-23

I hate to be the voice of negativity among all the GREAT raves that this book got. I actually bought this book based on the reviews by other customers. It is a good book and specifies unique needs of small (especially toy) dogs. HOWEVER, as is often the case with an all encompassing book, this book would be great for first-time owners of toy dogs. I enjoyed the original edition which convinced me to get a toy dog (Papillons). If you are an experienced toy dog owner, you would only get a few things out of this book. This is the problem I find with these kind of books. It gets repetitive for the avid dog-book reader. The book doesn't address the intelligence of dogs and just glosses over each breed's characteristics. The photos in the books were great though.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-09

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is by that immortal writer of collie and dog books, Albert P. Terhune. It is a collection of collie stories, some about his own dogs, including the famous Lad, and some about fictional dogs. Several of the stories made me cry, and several made me laugh. This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves dogs, or just anyone who wants to read some good stories.

5 out of 5 stars A book that never should have gone out of print!.......1998-10-28

"The Heart of a Dog" is Terhune at his best...You get to meet many of the residents of Sunnybank Farm and you will laugh, cry, and be spiritually uplifted in the process! The collection of short stories contains lessons for life that will remain long after you've put the book down. This is a book to be passed on to as many who will read it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Stories and Resource Too.......2003-06-24

In addition to inspiring stories about mutts, the book contains a wealth of reference information including websites and even an organization that "registers" mutts. I highly recommend this book both as a general reader and as a pet columnist for my local newspaper.

As soon as I opened the book, I couldn't put it down. The stories will make you laugh and cry. I can't tell you how many times I've re-read it - it's just that good. If there's a skeptic out there who thinks dogs have no feelings, check this book out - it'll prove you wrong

    5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Mutts.......2000-03-20

This book is pure joy. For those of us who have loved our dogs, the stories tug at your heart strings. Karen Derrico captures each dog's story with a peek into other dog owner's heart and how much they loved their special friend. Thank you for writing a book that has been so long in coming, and so beautifully written. This one is a must for dog lovers, pet lovers, and anyone who has ever had that special bond with their pet.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All.......1999-12-09

The title of this book truly says it all. These dogs are unforgettable. The best thing about this book is the memories it brought back to me of my childhood friend and mutt, Pokey. Since adulthood, I have always owned fullbred dogs, one rescued from a shelter, but still not the adorable mutt. After reading this book, I think of all of the love and devotion Pokey gave my family, and I am proud to say that she was a mutt. For those who own mutts, read the book and celebrate their uniqueness. For those who own pedigrees, read it anyway. It is full with stories of the love and joy only a dog can give. My only criticism is that it is too short. I could have read 100 more stories.

5 out of 5 stars The book is unique, as are the mutts celebrated within it.......1999-08-04

What a book! What a book! What a book! A tribute to the "mutt"-- God's precious gift to us humans! Their love, intelligence, courage, loyalty ; their precious souls, are a shining tribute to the canine kingdom and to our Father's loving creation. So many times a mutt is a combination of the best of each breed.

The stories in this book are a celebration of these wonderful animals and their relationship to those of us humans who have been lucky enough to share one-- or more. Hopefully this book will inspire many people to adopt from animal shelters.

This reviewer has had the joy of four wonderful, dear small mutts, mainly mixed terrier. They are now in Heaven, and the pain of separation cuts deeply.

But in spite of the hurt of this separation, I know that we will be together again when it is my turn to "cross over".

I would like to share with you my recommendation of three books, all of which can do a great deal to assuage the grief one feels at losing a beloved pet/companion/"child":

The first is The Soul of Your Pet-- this book gives solid, credible evidence of animal afterlife; there are many stories of people's interactions with pets that have passed on; many cannot be "explained away"; an example would be of a vet that is called on to treat a sick horse and sees a ghost horse near it- formerly owned by the people who call her out. She has never been there before. Hardly a "grief-induced hallucination" as the owner don't even see it. They recognize it when the vet describes it to them. A mother and daughter are with their cats in a room; their former pet walks in through the wall; both women see it and the living cats chase it out of the room. The recountings in the book are happy ones; the people are brought great comfort by seeing (hearing or feeling) again their departed pets. It is virtually impossible to be skeptical after reading several of these incidents. The idea of animals having souls is backed up biblically, as well.

The second book, For Every Dog an Angel, will melt your heart. Although written for children it is for everyone. The author wrote it after losing her "forever dog", Martha; she has had experiences that would fit with the above-mentioned Pet Souls book.

When a puppy is born we are told an angel comes to be with it throughout its life; when it bonds with its "forever person" it brings the angel much joy; when it is time for it to go to the "Other Side" its angel becomes its bridge. Sometimes it crosses back over the angel bridge to visit; the child is told to listen for pawsteps when going for a walk, or look for covers rumpling on the bed; the children love it! Finally, when it is our turn to "cross over" our forever pet is waiting to greet us and there is a joyeous reunion. I will not likely tire of re-reading its charmingly-illustrated 32 pages, and I'll bet you won't, either! If your child has lost a pet-- or is likely to--please get this book!

The third book, Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates is a Christian book, wonderfully done; it is truly inspired.

Unforgettable Mutts will bring much pleasure to its readers and will touch the heart deeply; the other three books will bring much comfort and happy anticipation.

A few years ago, there was practically nothing to help those of us grieving over pet loss; now we are finally beginning to get what we need; understanding of how deeply-bonded we can become to our canine (and other companion animal) friends.
