Book Description
With its distinctive investigative approach to learning, this laboratory manual encourages students to become active participants in the science of biology. While teaching basic concepts and laboratory procedures important for all biology majors to learn, the authors also invite students to pose hypotheses, make predictions, conduct open-ended experiments, collect data, and then apply the results to new problems. Laboratory exercises are divided into three categories – directed investigations, thematic investigations, and open-ended investigations.

free book for sale?.......2007-01-03
The book is everything I expected, except for the tape on front of the cover. I tried to remove the tape and lo and behold, the printing under the tape says "FREE COPY". I don't think it's right to get a free copy of a book from the publisher then sell it. So although I'm pleased with the book, I'm disappointed in the deception.

My kids wanted me to keep reading!.......2007-10-07
When we first started reading this book during our homeschool unit on Ancient Egypt, my kids seemed disinterested. They are both girls, and this was a book about a boy. How boring! But before they knew it, they were asking me to read on, beyond the chapter a day we were supposed to read. The suspense was too much for them, and they wanted to find out what would happen next. I'm glad I didn't give up too early on this wonderful book!
A Kids Review.......2007-08-24
The Golden Goblet is about a boy, Ranofer, who is poor and has no food to eat. He worked at the goldsmith shop, but was not lucky enough to be an apprentice to Rekh the Goldsmith, because Gebu (Ranofer's half brother) thought that being a goldsmith had no skills. One day when Ranofer came home, Gebu told him that he has to work for the stonecutters. Ranofer was so mad he couldn't even say goodbye by to Rekh. This book takes you through different adventures with Ranofer. I liked this book because the characters in the book where described so well and the storytelling was described magnificently. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy mysteries and intense moments. They should also be aware that the book is a little slow to get into in the beginning, but once you start to see the plot develop you will not be able to put it down.
This Book is Great.......2007-03-14
I had to read this book for school. I am homeschooled. After I read the first chapter....I couldn't put it down. I couldn't stop reading it. Now, I have always found joy in reading but that matters not with this book. This went along with my history. (Acient Egypt) I will say nothing of the character nor the events, for it will destroy the joy in reading it yourself. This book is better...far better than words can describe. It is really good, take my word for it. Only satisfaction awaits you in this book.
THIS BOOK IS PAINFUL TO READ!!.......2006-05-19
This book is the worst book ever. I didn't know there could possibly be a book this bad. If you are required to read this book like me, i feel bad for you. Do NOT read this book for pleasure because it is not a pleasant book. It is painful to read. If you are STILL thinking of reading this bad book, DON'T READ IT!! take my advice.
Golden Goblet Exerpt.......2006-04-19
The Golden Goblet is about an Egyptian boy named Ranofer. After hid father, Thutra dies he has to live with his child-abusing half brother Gebu. Gebu always beat him up for no reason and feed Ranofer very little. Ranofer's dream was to be a Master Goldsmith, but Gebu messes it up when he makes Ranofer a Stonecutter. Soon Ranofer suspects Gebu is stealing. So, his friends, Heqet and the Ancient start spying on Gebu. But If you want to knows what happens then read Golden Goblet! If start getting bored between Chapter 1 through 2, then keep going because in Chapter 3 things start to get a little exciting. But if you are still bored then have fun burning the book.

delightfully illustrated book.......2007-01-24
This is a wonderful book with delightful illustrations. My three year old loves the Eloise character. The stories are unique, but, as written, are a little hard to follow. I would reccomend the book as a wonderful keepsake and reminder of "Eloise."
long winded Eloise.......2006-11-06
This is the typical cute Eloise stories, but in a longer verson. My daughter who loves Eloise got board with the first story half way through. She is young and is getting used to longer stories, but even I was glad when she said she did not want to hear anymore for that night.
It starts with Eloise........2006-11-03
To the father who wonders what he's missing, I can only say "It's a girl thing." So many of us long to be outspoken, daring and fashionable--a "Woman in Crescendo," as Sophia Loren put it. And yet we haven't achieved it yet; we're still in training, just like Eloise. That's why little girls (and big ones!) are so perpetually enchanted with her, and why this collection is absolutely essential for someone raising daughters. Bombshell training can never start too soon!
Essential for your library.......2006-08-20
We "got" Eloise as soon as we read the first page. My daughters, 4 and 6 love, love, love Eloise. They love her antics and can visualize the trouble she gets into so innocently (or not). Eloise is curious, inventive, creative, sleuthy, and definitely oblivious. We travel a lot so my kids can relate to being in a hotel. Eloise lives in a hotel so there are lots of opportunities to involve others (other guests, employees, restaurant staff, telephone operators, etc.) in her wicked (hilarious) fun. After we read Eloise for the first time (and we love the Essential Eloise the best, then Paris) we could not wait until the next night to read some more.
Great Stories for kids!.......2006-07-24
One of the best writers for children and one of the best cartoon creators.
Book Description
Little Golden Books illustrated by Eloise Wilkin are among the most remembered, beloved, and requested by consumers. This collection, which contains nine of her best-loved books, will be cherished by collectors, parents, and children for years to come. It contains Wilkin’s most famous Little Golden Books (such as Baby Dear), as well as lesser-known Little Golden Books, prayers, poems, Mother Goose rhymes, and an introduction written by Wilkin’s daughter.
There are various authors of the books contained in the treasury, including Jane Werner Watson, who edited and wrote hundreds of Golden Books. She called Eloise Wilkin "the soul of Little Golden Books."
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, takes you back in time.......2007-07-27
I bought the book for Baby Dear (which is out of print as a single book) and was so delighted with the other stories and illustrations. My 14 month old started cooing and giggling as soon as she saw the pictures - I'm sure it will be a favorite for years to come.
Classics that modern day children love.......2007-06-30
My daughter has LOVED this book since she was about 20 months old. There are great stories for toddlers, plus a few more advanced ones to "grow on." The illustrations are just lovely, and you'll find ideas and concepts that just aren't being taught today. A good example is "We Help Mommy." Don't hesitate. Buy this book for the toddler or preschooler in your life.
GREAT!!.......2007-05-07
This is an awesome book for children of all ages! The illustrations take you places. I highly recommend this for any library!
Foundation for every child's library.......2007-03-30
Starting with my son and then my daughter we read through Wilkin's books. They loved them. I loved them. So, I was thrilled to find this edition. I bought it for my grandson. But I am keeping it for myself and will order another copy for him. In this way he can have some of the best books at 'Grannie's" house for reading. I plan to buy more and give them as gifts to my daughter's friends as they have children.
Eloise Wilkin Stories .......2007-03-08
Eloise Wilkin is the only illustrator that I have hunted far and wide for her books. The way she draws just touches something in my heart and adds tremendous emotion to whatever story or poem that is being read.

Eloise's Guide to Life: Or, How to Eat, Dress, Travel, Behave, and Stay Six Forever
ASIN: 067122350X |
Amazon.com
"I am Eloise/I am six." So begins the well-loved story of Eloise, the garrulous little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel. Eyebrow raised defiantly, arm propped on one jutting hip, Eloise is a study in self-confidence. Eloise's personal mandate is "Getting bored is not allowed," so she fills her days to the brim with wild adventures and self-imposed responsibilities. An average Eloise afternoon includes braiding her pet turtle's ears, ordering "one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons" from room service, and devising innovative methods of torture for her guardians.
Eloise's exploits are non-stop, and--accordingly--the text uses nary a period. Kay Thompson perfectly captures the way children speak: in endless sentences elongated with "and then ... and then ... and then... " Hilary Knight's drawings illustrate Eloise's braggadocio and amusement as well as the bewilderment of harassed hotel guests. Eloise's taunts are terrible, her imagination inimitable, her pace positively perilous. Her impertinence will delight readers of all ages. (Ages 5 and older)
Book Description
Eloise is a little girl who lives at The Plaza Hotel in New York. She is not yet pretty but she is already a Person.
Henry James would want to study her.
Queen Victoria would recognize her as an Equal.
The New York Jets would want to have her on their side.
Lewis Carroll would love her (once he got over the initial shock).
She knows everything about The Plaza. She is interested in people when they are not boring.
She has Inner Resources.
If you take her home with you, you will always be glad you did.
Customer Reviews:
not what I want my child to emulate........2007-05-13
interesting to read as an adult. Wouldn't want to read to a young child.
ooh I just love Eloise!.......2006-08-12
Awesome book! Totally loved it--my three year old finds her fascinating. "Why does she want to pour a pitcher of water down the mail chute, mommy?" She's a naughty girl but such a wonderfully creative and self reliant one! I think she is a great role model for my little girls!
Mother of Two.......2006-04-11
I would think someone who would be offended by the style in which "Eloise" is written would be "smart" enough to know that the expression is "for all intents and purposes" and not "intensive purposes."
Don't bother.......2006-03-25
We have one of the softcover books and enjoy it very much and so I thought I would by this for my 4-year-old (who actually acts like Eloise sometimes). BAD CHOICE! I read through it on my own before I read it to her and THANK GOODNESS! Eloise is a back-talking, foul-mouthed terror! I can see how some adults may enjoy this book - maybe they're living vicariously through her antics. But she is no example in this book for small children. I'll be more careful next time - there definitely are cute "Eloise" books out there but this one was dreadful. If you're a big fan, read it through completely first to see it it's a fit. I must say that I was horrified.
Give the Kids Some Credit.......2005-12-06
I was surprised by the negative reviews! This is a wonderful, imaginative, hilarious book. I think even the under-8 crowd can see that Eloise is a naughty, outrageous little girl. When you're a kid, constantly being told how to behave, you get some vicarious pleasure out of Eloise's antics. How boring for everyone involved if you want your kids to read only preachy books about perfect children. I always preferred books where those children come to a gruesome end. If you really think your kids are too slow-witted to understand that Eloise is naughty and her internal monologue is ungrammatical, you could always talk with them about it (and explain it to death)! (Oh, and for the Mother of Two in VA who complains about the "bad grammar"--the correct phrase is "for all intents and purposes," not "for all intensive purposes." Read much?)

Great New Internet Marketing Book.......2001-01-17
I recently purchased this book and have found it to be extremely helpful in understanding the intersection of marketing and the Internet. I am a computer engineer trying to better comprehend the world of business. This book provides both theoretical and practical insights that have been extremely useful. The book is very well written in a style that is accessible to an outsider, yet covers the topics in significant depth.
Book Description
(Foreword, by Lorin Hollander, concert pianist)
Eloise Ristad deals here with complex problems which torment and cripple so many of our most creative and talented people, and she does so with compassion, wisdom, and wit. The problem of stage fright, for instance, is a suffering of epidemic proportions in our society, and involves modalities of thought and projections that rob spontaneity and enthusiasm in artistic performance.
Those interested in creative education have long felt that an entirely new, holistic and nurturing process of allowing individuals to discover and express themselves is needed if our educational system is to avoid the neuroses and creative blocks of the past generation. This book illuminates through its conversational style the destructive inhibitions, fears, and guilt experienced by all of us as we fail to break through to creativity. This story is told to me day after day in conservatories and college campuses around the world. Indeed I felt at times that she was telling of my own most petty and debilitating fears.
But what is important, A Soprano on Her Head supplies answers and methods for overcoming these universal psychological blocks--methods that have not only been proven in her own studio, but which trace back through history to the oldest and wisest systems of understanding the integration of mind and body. The work bears scrutiny both scientifically and holistically.
This is a wonderful book. Read it. You are not alone.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Book.......2007-08-22
I bought this book because of the wonderful things everyone was saying about it. I am a music major, and being one, I have had many struggles. When you want to study music, no one doubts that you love it. A person has to become it. The struggle of learning the right techniques and harder and harder music is enough to make anyone forget why they loved music in the first place. This book is helping me to let the music flow, and use all of this knowledge that I have learned in college. I beleive that any one who has struggled with themsleves and their music should read this book. It is a beautiful part of any library, and should be read by any and all who come across it.
Writers need this book.......2007-07-13
Just as DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN is more than a book about drawing, so A SOPRANO ON HER HEAD is one of those life-enhancing books from which anyone can benefit. I plan to put this on the Suggested Reading list I hand out at my writing classes.
"In any art there must be movement . . ." she quotes Chaim Nahor, an Israeli painter. Ristad argues quite convincingly that in order to be truly touched by art in any form, we must be _moved_.
Brian Corrigan, one of my favorite fellow novelists, has said that he has a single word posted at the top of his computer monitor. It says "LINGER." Ristad shows us how to linger with every moving moment, and how, as artists in any medium, we can bring forth those moments from the deep well of creativity. We can dance ourselves onto the canvas, the printed page, the composition.
All life, in one form or another, is art. I suggest that we all use A SOPRANO ON HER HEAD to help us paint our lives more brilliantly. I refer to this book often as I'm writing my cat mysteries, and show it to people whose books I edit. This is a book that gives great value for the price and for the time spent reading it.
Helpful to all practicing musicians.......2007-01-03
Ms. Ristad has written a book that feels just like she knew me. It's refreshing to hear that we all have many of the same issues about confidence, performance anxiety and classical music in general. She has a nice way of discussing these issues in a way that values them while pointing out just how absurd the conservatory-style music education system really is. Soprano is a must-read, no matter what your instrument.
Tough to put down.......2004-04-04
The first chapter of this book was a reading assignment for my voice pedagogy class. I wasn't completely sold by the title (or the cover), but I was instantly hooked once I started reading. This book will be loved by all musicians as well as anyone engaged in any sort of practice. Through her exciting and light approach to dealing with "serious problems," Ristad shows us that our harshest critics are those "judges" within us, those inner voices to which we currently worship. When we are willing to put those voices aside momentarily and give ourselves permission to try, to experiment, even to fail once in a while, we actually give ourself permission to grow and excel. An inspiring message to all.
Quirky but worthwhile.......2003-10-02
The author suggests unconventional ways of dealing with musician's nagging problems, such as, self doubt or technical plateaus. Her approach and ideas are a bit quirky but useful. She challenges musicians to step outside the conventional pedagogy box to explore solutions in fresh ways. Hidden under this new way of addressing problems is the feeling of empowerment musicans will gain if they listen to her advice.

Great book, not for kids.......2007-10-07
I ordered this book as a supplement to our Ancient Egypt unit. We read "The Golden Goblet" together, and "Mara" was recommended on the Amazon site as another good title. I read this myself on my way to Florida, and found that the situations are more adult and mature in nature. There was nothing wrong with anything that happened in the story, everything was 'clean', but I couldn't see my 9 and 12 year old listening to or reading it with interest. Highly recommended for any mature teen to adult who would like to read some good historical fiction from that time period!
Engrossing..........2007-08-04
Just enough romance to keep you hooked, completely clean. Lots of tension between right and wrong. Good character development.
mara rules!.......2007-06-05
i read this book many years ago on a summer reading list & enjoyed it so much that i own several copies that i still read. this was my first introduction to ancient egypt, pharaohs who were female, river travel on the nile, etc. it is an engrossing adventure that a tween or adult would enjoy. mara made an impression on me because of her guts & sharp mind & any book with a ballsy heroine who achieves way more than what she aimed for is okay by me.enjoy!
One of the best books I ever read........2007-02-09
This is probably one of my favorite books. It is adventurous and I am learning about Egypt this year. It really gets you psyched about learning about Egypt and people who lived at that time. I think Eloise should make a sequel or get the book made into a movie.
Egyptian Masterpiece.......2007-01-01
I honestly don't remember when I bought this book, was probably my sophomore or junior year of HS, but I'm a freshman in college now...and I'll still rank it amongst the best pieces of literature I've ever read.
Whether it was the playful (albeit dangerous at times) banter between her and Sheftu or the stunning descriptions of the lotus gardens this book is a masterpiece and my only criticism was that it was not longer......
Book Description
An ALA Notable Children's Book
HONEY, I LOVE
and other love poems
Ages 7 to 11
Love don't mean all that kissing
Like on television
Love Means Daddy
Saying keep your mama company
till I get back
And me doing it
Sixteen poems tell of love and the simple joys of everyday life, seen through the eyes of a child: playing with a friend, skipping rope, riding on a train--or keeping Mama company till Daddy gets back.
Each of these sixteen "love poems" is spoken straight from the heart of a child. Riding on a train, listening to music, playing with a friend...each poem elicits a new appreciation of the rich content of everyday life. And each poem is accompanied by a beautiful drawing, both portrait and panorama, that deepens the insights contained in the singing words.
For the first time Eloise Greenfield and Diane and Leo Dillon have combined teir rich talents to bring children a book that shows them the joys that come from seeing with a poet's eyes--the eyes of love.

Pure, Beautiful Poetry for Any Age.......2005-05-11
This book is a must for any child's bookcase, particularly if one wants to rear a child who is sensitive, racially tolerant and in tune with the beauty of language.
These poems are of pure emotion: love, joy, loss, bravery, silliness. The voice is childlike but amazingly profound as the poems cover a squeaky school piano, a Southern cousin whose every word "just kind off slides out of his mouth" and the complete abandon one feels when dancing deep in the music of Earth, Wind and Fire.
My favorite two poems are a bit more serious. In "Keepsake," Greenfield uses just nine simple lines to convey loss, and the impact adults can have on children. This is not a maudlin poem that is too heavy or upsetting. Although it deals with death, it's respectful and loving. And the poem "Harriet Tubman" is amazing, deftly describing the woman's heroics and bravery in a satisfying and strong verse.
Honey, I Love is a thought-provoking work that stands the test of time. It's a book that adults and children can, and should, enjoy together.
Eloise, we love you too!.......2000-05-05
HONEY, I LOVE and other love poems is simply put, one of the all-time best books of poetry ever written - and it is loved and enjoyed by adults as well as children. Eloise Greenfield's poetry is full of wisdom, simplicity, and elegance. The title poem reflects a childhood any child would be privileged to have - a "flying pool," a cousin from the South whose words just kinda "slide" out of his mouth, a Mama whose arm is for holding her child...and for being kissed. What more could anyone need? The other poems are brilliant as well - especially HARRIET TUBMAN who didn't "take no stuff." This poem, in fact, is an anthem for school children everywhere, who love a hero and aspire to be one as well. Poetry doesn't get any better than the stuff that comes out of Eloise Greenfield's experiences, heart, and pen. As an author and teacher myself, I admire the timeless nature and awesome craftwork in this book, and I share it every chance I get. Honey, you'll love it!
