Great ideas if you like to create your own borders and edges on sweaters. Something a intermediate or beyond knitter can use. I also have her first book on edges and will plan to buy or new book.
A great source of inspiration.......2006-11-09
I've recently returned to knitting and bought this book after many months of passing it in the book store. In fact, it was the cover that started making me itch to pick up the needles again. If you've ever felt the urge to design your own, this book will definitely give you ideas to start from.

Book Description
Gripping accounts of all known fatal mishaps in the most famous of the World's Seven Natural Wonders.
Two veterans of decades of adventuring in Grand Canyon chronicle the first complete and comprehensive history of Canyon misadventures. These episodes span the entire era of visitation from the time of the first river exploration by John Wesley Powell and his crew of 1869 to that of tourists falling off its rims in Y2K.
These accounts of the 550 people who have met untimely deaths in the Canyon set a new high water mark for offering the most astounding array of adventures, misadventures, and life saving lessons published between any two covers. Over the Edge promises to be the most intense yet informative book on Grand Canyon ever written.
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Study of Human Behavior.......2007-09-17
While the topic of this book might seem morbid, it really is a fascinating and instructive set of essays on human behavior. Well-researched and engaging, this revised and updated edition recounts stories of what most often amount to tragic tales of sheer human stupidity.
What really resonates most strongly is the authors' desire to communicate that the Grand Canyon is not some man-made, man-controlled theme park, but instead a heartbreakingly beautiful and very dangerous natural phenomenon, to be treated with reverence and caution.
The final chapter on murder reads like a historical thriller, unearthing mysteries that have been embedded in the canyon for over a hundred years. But the authors never rely on sensationalism. Instead, they share eyewitness accounts and solid research that reveal many secrets of the canyon, only to show that there are many more buried below.
Can't put it down.......2007-08-24
When I was at the Grand Canyon a year ago I saw this book in a gift shop, at the hotel. I thought, "Na...too morbid". I am now planning on hiking down with a friend later next year and I got this book along with several "how to" guides for hiking in the GC. Both authors are experienced witnesses of the many accounts that are cited. I am not finished with the book yet but Ghiglieri works at a local medical clinic and has seen many emergencies, while Myers is an experienced boatman and river guide. A great read and essential for trip knowledge before you set out on your next hike!
Grand Graveyard!.......2007-08-20
Despite the title, "Death in Grand Canyon", this book by Ghiglieri and Myers is neither gory nor macabre. It is a fascinating account of the truly idiotic, careless, unprepared, and misguided (figuratively and literally) people who over the past hundred years or so have met their maker in the Grand Canyon by various means including:
falling, jumping, hiking, swimming, boating and flying over and in the Grand Canyon.
Their are some truly interesting stories of survival mixed in with the hundreds of deaths documented over the years. It is enjoyable, easy reading.
Kudos to the National Park Service rangers who have to put their lives on the line to try to rescue the unfortunate victims and to Ghiglieri and Myers for a great book.
Interesting, but got old.......2007-08-04
I stopped reading it about half way through as I just thought the stories of death were poorly organized, and the writing didn't seem to flow well for me, I started to find it boring. However, I did find it interesting to see how people died and found that by far and away it was people who weren't respecting the danger of the canyon. I took that to heart when I hiked to the bottom of the canyon about a year after reading the book. BTW: hiking the canyon was one of the greatest experiences of my life! And I didn't die.
Warning.......2007-07-26
We have a trip planned to hike into the canyon. I wanted everyone to be aware of the dangers and I think this book does a good job of presenting those dangers. I'll write more later...if we make it out!

Customer Reviews:
Buy it!.......2002-12-25
This book is almost as good as Natenberg, and much better than McMillan, Schaffers, and Fontanills. Although it is about options on futures, most of the strategies discussed are applicable to stock options as well.
Filled with Insight, Creative, Not For Newbies.......2002-06-16
A good choice for stock option investors despite it mentioning commmodities. This book will overwhelm a beginner, who should start with Charles Caes' great "Tools of the Bear" (which works for bull and bear markets). Far superior to George Fontanills. Caplan is creative, he writes well and gives the studious reader many important tips. I made two pages of notes from this book. With even a little experience, an options investor will truly ascend to a higher level of knowledge and trading mastery with this book.
The New Option Advantage.......2000-12-28
I don't receive his newsletter, I haven't been to any of his seminars and I don't trade with his brokerage. That being said, this book is outstanding in teaching non-complicated option strategies to traders who want to receive an "Edge" in trading. I have been trading futures for 7 years now, and have recently implemented options into my toolbag of strategies. So far, I've made at least 20 times what I paid for this book. You do though, must understand the futures market first. Trying to read this book, before understanding futures in general, will leave you in a daze. In contrast, there are many books who over-do option strategies by trying to explain how they came up with different strategies by using complex mathematical solutions and explaining how these solutions can make you money. If you think your confused reading this book, wait till you read one of those kinds of books! Good Luck everyone
for futures options traders only.......2000-02-25
This book is very useful for those who are interested in trading futures and futures options. It really gives you the best strategies to use to capitalize in any market environment. If you do not have a very clear understanding of how to trade which options and at what time, this book will definately help.
Good book for option strtegist.......1999-09-30
This book is good for the readers who has a good knowing in option basic. Deep investigations in different futures markets make this book very attractive for serios option trader. But mr. Caplan does not show his methods on 100%. It is not good, because the new traders can lose money if they will follow the Dave's methods as closely as they can.

Book Description
In this inspiring and joyous book, New York Times bestselling author Geneen Roth introduces her remarkable twenty-pound cat, Mister Blanche, and her beloved father, Bernard, as she takes readers deep into the story of how each finally taught her to love without reservation and accept that she might someday lose those whom she believed she couldn’t live without. Told with warmth and wit, The Craggy Hole in My Heart and The Cat Who Fixed It is a poignant and funny story about how to live with love—and never live without it.
Customer Reviews:
One for your permanent library.......2007-04-29
A beautiful and engaging story, this memoir deals with coming of age, learning to accept and give love, coming to terms with parents, and death and dying. Geneen Roth masterfully writes about many of life's large universal themes and puts them together expertly into a cohesive whole. This story will stick with you. This book is one of those rare gems to keep in your permanent library, one that will surely unfold a different lesson and mystery each time you read it.
Worth re-reading over and over!.......2006-08-04
I love this book and I often re-read it. Funny and clever writing. Easy to relate to and written with heart!
Hope for those who have suffered a loss.......2006-07-12
Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us. Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless. Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.
Narcissistic woman, narcissistic family, but the cat is nice........2006-06-10
I was extremely disappointed with this book. It has a great title and the concept of someone who loved neither cats nor herself learning to live with both interested me.
Lo and behold, Geneen Roth spends less than a page describing her antipathy to cats. She gets Blanche, suddenly he's ten years old, and there's no description of how she came to accept something she formerly disliked.
Her description of herself as an overweight, selfhating shopaholic (there are many, many mentions of earrings) is followed by a description of her immediate marriage to an apparent saint. Ms. Roth spends most of the book describing how successful, rich, and spoiled she is--how many people get Zen masters and acupuncture treatments for their cats?--but the greater part is spent on describing her neuroses and her father, pretty much in that order.
Ms. Roth is apparently stung that her father left his money to his wife rather than to her and her brother. If she truly loved her father she'd not have expected anything; after all, his medical treatments were 'only' half a million dollars. His wife is described as working as a secretary. Why does a millionaire's wife work? Possibly because she needs to for financial or personal reasons? In any case, Daddy's money was his, not hers, and he probably felt that Ms. Roth had enough on her own, while the wife needed it more.
This is a self serving tale of a very privileged woman who likes to write about herself. I would have appreciated hearing more about the cat.
Wonderful and tearjerking read.......2006-05-14
This book was absolutley wonderful! It pulls at your heart and really makes you think. I recommend it to everyone. Geneen has a great way with words. I have enjoyed some of her other books as well such as Appetites and When You Eat at the Refrigerator Pull Up a Chair.

Customer Reviews:
Magellan Iluminated.......2007-10-01
The author brings the voyage and the societal context of the journey to the reader. The book contains what is likely to have been all of the evidence available, yet is lively and interesting. Anyone who enjoys the superb biographies by Ronald Chernow will enjoy this, too.
Was going good, but lacked that little "something".......2007-09-30
It seems that the author was very well documented. It was very clear his effort in keeping a "balanced" position, and not to be too much "judgemental". The author tried his best to make us understand how things in the 16th century use to work (if anyone thinks that our times are tough, take a look at those days). And for all that, I am happy. But there was missing that little "I don't know what" that takes a "good" book, into a "great" book. Anyway, the book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to know about that amazing story of humankind.
Good, overall.......2007-08-15
Good book overall though I am troubled by a description of Magellan's ancestry. According to the author, on his mother's side, the family name is Mesquitas. The author suggests that that side of the family may have been Jewish because Mesquitas refers to a mosque in Spanish. Huh? Muslims pray at mosques, Jews at synagogues. The family may have been Moors, not Jews.
Are there more inaccuracies?
A Very Impressive Read.......2007-07-13
I'm really glad historians are beginning to write for people who aren't preparing for a test and simply want a book that's as informative as it is enjoyable. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It's really unforgettable. Some reviewers obviously didn't like this, but that's life. As for me, I couldn't put it down and was wanting more at the end. Here you'll see Magellan, warts and all--plenty of warts, yet so much a man of principle even when he was misguided. What's so amazing to me is that Bergreen shows Magellan realistically standing alone for what he believes all the while facing challenges (natural and personal) that would make the most steel-hearted man alive flinch in a second. This is a portrait of bravery and dedication to purpose like I've never seen before in a man who is most certainly not without his faults. Read it and enjoy.
As exhilarating as the voyage itself.......2007-06-25
This book makes Columbus and even Cook seem like mere amateurs in comparison. Magellan is the main man! Bergreen knows how to write the story of the great explorer with the hand of a novelist. It makes a fantastic read.
As a follow-up I suggest you read the book "1492 - The year China discovered America". It puts things in perspective, like how did Magellan know about the strait from the atlantic to the pacific that would later bear his name?

Book Description
When the phone rings in the middle of the night, child psychologist Alex Delaware does not hesitate. Driving through the dream-lit San Fernando Valley, Alex rushes to Jamey Cadmus, the patient he had failed five years before—and who now calls with a bizarre cry for help. But by the time Alex reaches Canyon Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, Jamey is gone, surfacing a day later in the hands of the police, who believe Jamey is the infamous Lavender Slasher, a psychotic serial killer. Wooed by a high-powered attorney to build a defense, Alex will get a chance to do what he couldn’t five years ago. And when he peers into a family’s troubled history and Jamey’s brilliant, tormented mind, the psychologist puts himself at the heart of a high-profile case. Because Alex knows that in a realm of money, loss, and madness, something terrible pushed Jamie over the edge—or else someone is getting away with murder.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Effort from Kellerman.......2007-10-01
For the most part, I enjoyed OVER THE EDGE. It's a very effective psychological thriller about a young man who may or may not have committed a horrible series of murders. It works well as a whodunit, and Kellerman knows how to keep the suspense alive in his stories.
OVER THE EDGE does suffer from many of the flaws that characterize Kellerman's work. The storyline is not particularly realistic, and is very complex and convoluted (Kellerman takes 50 pages to explain it at the end). This novel also contains a lot of pages of technical jargon, including some rather incomprehensible discussions about how certain drugs affect the limbic system of the brain. While I'm impressed by the depth of Kellerman's research, I think he dumps way too much of it in his novels, leading me to skip over quite a number of paragraphs.
Still, I really enjoy Kellerman's writing style, and I found OVER THE EDGE quite engaging for the most part. While it isn't as good as WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS, I think this is definitely one of the better Alex Delaware novels that I've read.
golden oldie.......2007-09-13
The copyright date on this Alex Delaware novel is 1987. I had not realized the series was that old ~~ or Dr Delaware, for that matter.
Even then, at the beginning of the series, the writing is fluent and well thought out. The plot is carefully planned, with a lot of interesting ideas to ponder as you follow the story.
Something that interests me: I really enjoy Kellerman's work, but in the last couple additions to the Dr D series, I have been able to spot the Bad Guy the moment he appears on the scene. I can't put my finger on what it is, but there is something that tips me off right away. (You can probably tell I have read a lot of Kellerman's books. They're all good!)
However, Over the Edge kept me guessing right up to the end, with extra unexpected surprises. As I have suggested in another review, maybe the author, like the villains he writes so vividly about, falls into patterns that give him away.
Never mind all that, just read and enjoy!
Psychological thriller.......2007-07-19
Psychologist Alex Delaware participated in a study of teenagers with extemely high IQs. One of the participants in the study, Jamey Cadmus, began to show psychotic symptoms during the study and Alex was dismayed that he could not help Jamey and, in fact, might have caused him some harm. Five years later, James places a late-night call to Alex which sounds like a cry for help. Jamey's disjointed and bizarre ramblings are difficult to untangle, but Alex decides he must try to help the young man. In doing so, he becomes involved in a court case which will have serious ramifications for Jamey's future.
Jonathan Kellerman uses his background as a psychologist to spin a creative and complex story. Jamey is a fascinating character, at once sympathetic yet terrifying in his actions. Author Kellerman at times uses too many psychological and pharmacological terms for the typical lay person, but despite this, the book is an engrossing read.
Worth the Read.......2007-05-17
When I start getting antsy, I automatically go to the back of the book and read the last few chapters. If I can easily connect the dots from what I've read from the beginning to what I read at the end, I put aside the book and move on.
This book not only had a surprise ending, but I wanted to know how the characters progressed to get there. I found myself reading forward and skipping back to the end multiple times to try to understand how it got there. I wasn't even able to skip a single page because the plot was so in depth and the events unfolding were so intriguing.
In general, I do like Jonathan Kellerman for that reason - most of his books make me want to read it from beginning to end. I find myself learning more about the characters and understandng Alex and Milo and Robin a little bit more each time. While many "series" books tend to get repetitive, I feel that most of Kellerman's books (and indeed this one) is unique and intriguing.
Okay, I really like Alex Delaware.......2006-05-07
This is the third Alex Delaware novel written by Jonathan Kellerman, but
it's the second one I've read. The first one I read was a much more
recent novel (Therapy) and was kind of slow going at first, but this one
had me hooked on page one! Alex Delaware is an intriguing character and
it makes a nice twist to have a crime novel told by someone more on the
fringe of the investigation. Delaware is a Psychologist who sometimes
does consulting for the police department. His good friend Milo Sturgis
is a homicide detective, so Delaware is often drawn into complicated and
grisly cases.
This book starts with a phone call in the wee hours which turns out to
be a crisis call from a former patient. James Cadmus had been a child
genius, but now has evidently gone off the deep end. When he is found
with two mutilated bodies and the bloody knife in his hand, it seems
obvious he's a homicidal maniac. But Delaware isn't so sure. It's a
wickedly tangled web, but Delaware finds help in some unexpected places
and the truth slowly becomes clear. Great stuff.
I love the dynamic between Alex and his friend Milo. Poor Milo has a new
captain who doesn't like him, so he's going through hell at work at the
moment and that leads to the bottle and trouble at home too. But you'll
just have to read the book to find out how that turns out.
And now I must go read all the other volumes in this series. There are
TWENTY of them! ARGH!

Book Description
SANCTAPHRAX WILL BE destroyed by the energy of the Mother Storm. . . .
Far over the Edge, the Mother Storm is brewing—a storm more terrifying than any seen in the lifetime of any Edgelander. Sweeping in from the open sky, it must strike the source of the Edgewater River to bring new energy to the land. But in its way is Sanctaphrax, a magnificent city built on a floating rock and tethered to the land by a massive chain. Only one person can save the Edgelands from certain disaster: Twig, the young sky pirate captain who dared to sail over the Edge—and returned with his memory shattered and his crew flung far and wide. But to recover his memory and take action, Twig must first find his lost crew. And this means a journey back into the Deepwoods, and beyond. . . .
“As before, Stewart’s descriptions are brilliant; Riddell’s line drawings are exquisitely detailed and notably grotesque. . . . Grandpa Reads Grandson Reads.......2007-01-12
The Edge series is just the ticket for a grandpa to read to his near teenaged grandson. The main theme is "Quest." The story holds its own against the high tech toys that command my grandson's attention. The wonderful drawings inform, helps to "see" the action. Believe me there is constant action, constant
challenges to our hero. It is a balanced tale about Twig's mistakes and triumphs. Paul Stewart is a master craftsman with the language. Encourages me to re-read passages that are so well written.
Missing Page.......2006-07-24
The book itself was great. I loved it. However, the book is missing a page. The pages go 225, 226, 229, 228, 229. There is another copy of page 229 instead of page 227. That is why I gave it a 4 star rating. Fortunately, you can still understand what happened even without this page.
just a good book.......2006-05-14
I think that midnight over santaphrax is a great book. Yes, so it is the last of twig's adventures, well at least know. but overall it is a super good book. any edge chronicle fan would enjoy it. i know i did and i am now on the 8th book.
.) .) My heart beats fast, I want it to last .) .).......2006-04-19
This is DEFINTELY the best Edge Chronicle ever. Twig has now fully matured (his hair is as awesome as ever) and he must embark on a mission to save his crew, which has been dispersed by the Mother Storm. Even if most of it isn't told from Twig's POV (meet Cowlquape, the biggest loser in Sanctaphrax) it's still nice to hear about Twig.
This book is pretty episodic, with Twig jumping from one place to another. Unlike "Beyond the Deepwoods" there is a purpose for all this because Twig is trying to find his crew members. In this book Twig travels everywhere: Sanctaphrax, Undertown, Great Shryke Slave Market, and ultimately Riverrise, the holiest place on the Edge. All the while he is accompanied by Cowlquape, who is such a loser it's almost insulting to Twig. Nevertheless, his patheticness makes Twig seem even larger than larger-than life, and I appreciate this.
Edge Fans (and especially Twig fans) like me will be sad to see the brave young captain for the last time. It's so sad that it has to end here. The next time we meet him he is a brave OLD captain and his hair isn't the same :(
P.S. the period/parenthesis arrangement at the top is my pathetic attempt at musical notes. It's not easy one a computer, you know!
Speechless.......2006-01-25
Would you like to go on an action-packed adventure on a flying ship that is sailing into a storm and possibly over the edge of existance? Then this book is for you.
Harry Potter aside, I've never read a fantasy novel more original. The first three installments of these series will have you hooked. You won't be able to put the books down.
In the first installment, Twig is a young boy raised by a woodtroll clan who gets lost in the dangerous Deep Woods and goes on a topsy-turvy adventure you won't want to miss. Man-eating trees, wild wolves, giant insects, gloamglozers -- who would want to miss that?
The second and third installments are twice the fun and we leave Captain Twig at the height of his grandest adventure. But the magic stops here. Be warned, folks. As the books continue on, they get less and less orginal and the stories are not at all as marvelous as they started out. They become repetitive and watered-down. To tell the absolute truth, the series should have stopped after this one. It would have been fine the way it was.
But don't miss the first three installments. You'll love them if you love adventure.

Good Suspense, Silly Romance........2007-02-15
I loved the action around the storyline involving the hijacking of the airplane and the brave young girl who risked her own life to save other passengers on the plane by posing as the politician's daughter. I also was surprised that Brockmann gave this girl something of a pretty horrible fate which, in a way, I had to respect.
The two main romances among the officers was awfully silly and transparent, but I'll give Brockmann points for some very sharp and funny dialog. The best romantic story was Helga's recollections of her brother and her best friend's sister during WWII, which I found very touching, and I also wished she didn't have Alheimer's.
Some of the plots are silly and often bile inducing, but there are so many layers in this verbal cake that one can almost pick and choose their favorite stories and disregard the rest easily. A generally good, fast paced book with something for everyone, and for that reason it works.
Another great Brockmann book.......2006-07-07
#3 in the series. Probably my least favorite so far. Not that I didn't like it. I did, just not as much as the others.
This one is about SEAL Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok, and Navy Helicopter pilot Teri Howe. Teri is a skittish woman who backs away from any conflict with men. She's being harassed by another Navy guy, who she had a one-night stand with 9 years earlier. Stan notices this, mostly because he's attracted to Teri. He doesn't think she'd ever notice him though because he's not particularly handsome. So he decides to try to help Teri with her issues with men, all the while not knowing that she is very attracted to him. In order to help, he gets her assigned to fly helos (helicopters) on a SEAL training mission. When they are on their way to their destination, word comes in that the SEALS are being re-routed because terrorists have hijacked a plane in a (fictional) European country (think Afghanistan). Usually woman aren't involved in SEAL missions, but since she's there, and she's a great pilot, she stays.
The rest of the book takes place in the foreign country where its very dangerous for Americans. The plane was taken over by a gunman who then forced the plane to land at an abandoned airstrip. When it landed, 4 other terrorists boarded the plane and held it hostage. They want 2 terrorists being held in jail to be released, and plan to use a Senator's daughter supposedly on board the plane as leverage. What they don't know is that the daughter never boarded the plane, having had her passport and boarding pass stolen beforehand. Another character, Gina Vitaglione, knows this and also sees that if the terrorists don't find the daughter, they will keep hurting hostages, so she says that she is the daughter. FBI top negotiator Max Bhagat is called in to try to talk to the terrorists. He and Gina develop a connection during this time.
I'm tempted to reveal more, because this is the part of the story I really wanted to read. Gina and Max are in several other books, and then they finally get "their" story in book 9. Which I'm dying to read. I love them together.
There's also the usual historical flashbacks - this time in the form of Stan's mother's friend, who has Alzheimer's. She keeps reverting back to her time in Denmark during the German invasion in WW2.
All in all, it was a good book. The plot line was excellent, really kept me into the story. The romance pairing was okay. I liked Stan and Teri together, but yet I don't think she did as good a job building the chemistry between them. Not enough to ruin the book. There is also more of the Sam/Alyssa pairing that has been used in the first 2 books, which helped out the romance-y department.

Beauty and the Beast? A May/December suspense that is sure to please!.......2006-05-17
SEAL Team 16 is called upon once again, this time to take down a group of terrorists who have hijacked a commercial airplane and forced it to land in Kazbekistan, they are charged with the rescue of 120 passengers on-board. Joining the SEAL team is FBI hostage negotiator Max Bhaghat, agents Jules Cassidy and Alyssa Locke, and Reserve chopper pilot Teri Howe.
Three romantic threads intertwine in this romantic thriller: a wistful WWII romance recalled by a Holocaust survivor; a turbulent relationship between SEAL Lt. Sam Starrett and FBI sharpshooter, Alyssa Locke; and a burgeoning romance between the team's Senior Chief Stanley Wolchonok and helicopter pilot Teri Howe.
When Teri Howe, one of the best helicopter pilots in the Naval Reserves, asks Stan to help her keep a harassing officer at bay, his instincts scream to comfort her and crush the offender. To put her out of reach of the officer, Stan arranges for her to accompany his team on a training op that quickly turns into a real-life rescue mission. Teri doesn't mind being in the middle of the action, and she's eager to spend time with the fierce but compassionate Senior Chief. Teri Howe is the pursuer, while Stan tries to steer clear of the whole "enlisted verses officer" fraternization rule. Each step Stan tries to take away from her, setting her up with Mike Muldoon, she takes two steps forward. It is nice to see the least outwardly romantic of SEAL Team 16 show his softer side. Steamy love scenes are perfectly and tastefully executed.
Meanwhile, Lt. Sam Starrett struggles to earn FBI sharpshooter, Alyssa Locke's trust. Max Bhaghat, FBI negotiator, endeavors to keep his dealings with American hostage, Gina Vittagliano, from becoming too personal; as the SEALs prepare to take out the terrorists. Over The Edge is fraught with so much tension and a harrowing assault of one of the passengers, that the team is forced to listen to in horror). Negotiator Max wrestles with his growing feelings for the hostage, and his inability to save her in time.
I was hooked from the beginning, and enjoyed the story within the story and WWII background. Taut suspense, witty dialogue and dashes of humor help maintain the novel's swift pacing, and Brockmann has a way of making characters come to life and feel like tangible people you come to care about. She is able to maintain a flow of storyline that knits all of these different pieces together and simply leaves you feeling like you know these people well. 4 1/2 Stars
"This op is turning into the f-ing love boat".......2006-05-09
[the above is an actual quote from the book]
I don't usually read romances, but got this one at the library. I thought: Thriller. Hijacked plane, navy seal...all the right stuff.
And the beginning was promising. Stan fixes everything, and has a human side to him that was compelling.
Then the plot hit the fan! As a thriller it stunk. The highjacking was interwoven into the plot weakly, as an after thought. The romantic "tension" between the protagonists was forced and irritating. The dialogue is mundane. The message that horniness leads to true romantic (Sam and Alyssa) love is rubbish.
The only worthwhile character was the highjacked girl, and I think it was brave of the author to not have her come out unscathed.
The historic (WWII) componant was interesting.
But overall, I kept asking who the audience is for this book. Not lovers of thrillers like me--and I wonder, do romance readers even care about a highjacked plane, or was that just getting in the way of wondering whether Teri will ever tell Sam that she loves him!?
You'll fall in love with the characters.......2005-12-26
Suzanne Brockmann has a way of making characters come to life and feel like tangible people you come to care about. This book in the Trouble Shooter series is one of my favorites. As is very often the case in a Brockmann book, you can read it out of order in the series and still love every minute of it, or read it in order and just find a deeper connection to familiar characters. Her wit is perfect. Steamy scenes, beautifully done. Her characters have heart!
Terri Howe is one of the most approachable female characters introduced by Brockmann to date. Senior Chief Stan is far from Movie Star gorgeous, but is a character you grow to love in a few short sentences.
Typical of a Brockmann book, she is able to seemlessly weave the story of Terri and Stan admist high action/adventure and danger in K-stan during a terrorist highjack situation. She offers a further unfolding of the story of Sam and Alyssa's explosive relationship as the FBI and the Seal's team must work together to resolve the crisis. Stan's mother experienced the losses of the holocaust and terror of the Nazi's. This story is beautifully told through the eyes of his mother's best friend, Helga - envoy to Isreal.
For most authors, I would recommend simplifying. Too many stories being told at the same time create a hard to follow chaos. That is not true of Suzanne Brockmann. She is able to maintain a flow of storyline that knits all of these different pieces together and simply leaves you feeling like you know these people well.
I've given this book to friends, male and female. They have all come back to me months later with the details of the story still fresh to them. I've never seen that with another author.

Out of the box art.......2007-07-03
Read this book for a non-traditional studio class and it was a great introduction to many contemporary artists I did not know.
Terrible writing and terrible art........2007-05-08
I can't believe that there are so many positive reviews for this book. Aside from any personal preferences, did anyone else notice that the text is FULL of grammatical mistakes? Even the artists' names are not spelled consistently the same way throughout an article. If you don't believe me, count the number of times she uses Mesa-Bains and then the number of times she uses Mesa-Baines.
Aside from that, the writing style is simply awful, although I guess with this kind of subject matter, it's hard to do much better. This book, along with my Studio Art class, has helped me to develop a strong disliking for most of the contemporary art that is gaining attention. It is thoroughly disturbing and pointless. None of the artists manage to successfully convey their messages. I am very glad to never have to see this book again.
A little of this and a little of that.......2001-02-03
as a MFA student thats currently being educated by "the institution" i find myself flip flopping between wanting to drop out or drop in...this book didn't save me but it sure put things in perspective, never before in a book have I seen cover such topics where you can find Barbara Kruger and James Luna and Joseph Beuys and Tomie Arai between the same cover's in a book. This book also addresses an important issue for me. race. The art world is racist and if you don't know that just look around, art is life and a reflection of society and if you dont know that its because your a white (sorry but its true). This book may not address it but it surely helps to have some artists of color represented (although they aren't near the best art makers).
An OK overview, but superficial.......1999-09-27
I guess this book is meant as a real "intro" text, but if you do know something about this art, it seems pretty lite. Clearly, lots of people like it, but Weintraub seems to bend so far over to make complex work accessible that she really over-simplifines. And the "art" in the book is so scattered and uneven, you don't get any deeper sense of what is going on, what the historical context of any of this might be.
Granted, there aren't many intro texts on recent art. So if this is one of the "better" ones, it's mostly for lack of competition. I wish there was some accessible middle ground between pop/gossip texts and academic tomes. This feels like it's written from someone really distant to the work, who's not always that well-informed.
Almost a bull's-eye.......1998-11-30
Anyone who wants to become familiar with intricacies of what can be the confusing world of post-modern art should read this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting an interesting cross-section of significant and fascinating collection of atypical artists. Pretty much every artist who is included has done their share of expanding the contemporary definition of Art in the Western and Non-western tradition. Over all, this compendium of essays does much to open the door to widen the reader's perspective on what art can do. The one aspect of this book that is troublesome is that the author often seems to focus on only one or two aspects of an artist's works, a habit that is frustrating at best and misleading at worst. While doing outside research on one of the artists included, Mel Chin, I was convinced there were two artists with the same name, as the perspective provided in the book did not prepare me for the artist's full range of activities. Still, this complaint should not stop an interested party from purchasing the book. I for one did not feel my money ill-spent.

Book Description
On the football field, Lawrence Taylor was an unstoppable force of nature -- arguably the best defensive player in the game and, quite possibly, ever. But off the field, the life of a player who enjoyed a record ten Pro Bowl appearances and led the New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories was an all-out blitz, fueled by drugs, sex, and booze, and charging at breakneck speed toward total self-destruction. This is the shocking true story of a giant's fall ... and his remarkable journey back to the world.

A reminder of Pro Sports........2007-03-29
I think this is a reminder of how Profesinal Athletes can take a turn for the worst. In the beginning of this Autobiography you can see the reality of the being a pro athlete. You see Lawrence in a situation were he is buying drugs and he is being held up and he is mugged. I thought this is a great way to teach people about how drugs can ruin an image and family life. This book is real it is from the eyes of probably the greatest linebacker of all time.
Great Story.......2006-05-22
His story is a very honest and hard look at his life written by he. He goes thru this nightmares of this addiction with honesty and detail. This many setbacks and attempts at sobriety are frightening and unknown to this common man. He were a great player for many years. He have finally conquered he demons and he are now a likable and respected person.
A Waste Of Time.......2005-08-11
Don't bother wasting your time on this book. It's difficult to believe that an individual would spend almost the entire book bragging about illegal and immoral behavior.
LT OUT OF CONTROL.......2005-02-20
THIS IS A VERY HONEST AND HARD LOOK AT LAWRENCE TAYLOR WRITTEN BY HIMSELF. HE GOES THRU THE NIGHTMARES OF THIS ADDICTIONS WITH HONESTY AND DETAIL. THE MANY SET BACKS AND ATTEMPTS AT SOBRIETY ARE VERY INTERESTING AND FRIGHTENING. HE WAS A GREAT PLAYER FOR MANY YEARS FOR THE GIANTS. LT HAS FINALLY GOTTEN A HANDLE ON HIS DEMONS AND IS NOW SOMEONE TO RESPECT. I FOUND THIS TO A WELL WRITTEN BOOK AND RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYONE.
The truth about LT.......2005-01-25
This book is about a hall of fame football player who drugs at one point took over his life.Lt started using cocaine as a social thing, but then it got to a point that it became a daily thing. The NFL started doing random drug test's Lt would tell people to urine in a cup for him so he can cheat the drug test it wouldn't show that he used drugs. Then Lt got two strikes for failing two drug test's after he heard that if he failed another drug test he would be banned from the NFL. So Lt got serious by going to rehab and cleaning himself up. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to find out the real truth about Lawrence Taylor. Also because it's a good book to read, and its very interesting. Also to anybody who likes football. And also I would recommend it because it shows you the affects that drugs have on someone's behavior. And it gives you the real facts about Lt's drug habit.
