Book Description

At the core of most marital conflicts lies an overlooked but vicious culprit: disrespect. According to Dr. James Dobson, this symptom is the most serious indicator of potential family breakup. In his groundbreaking classic that popularized the "tough love" principle, Dr. Dobson offers practical help for the spouse who wants to hold the marriage together. He shows how to rekindle romantic interest and draw the offending partner back home. For new generations faced with ever-increasing threats to stable and loving bonds, Love Must Be Tough offers realistic hope.

Have you tried everything to save your marriage?

You’ve forgiven a thousand times. You’ve bent over backwards to make your partner feel loved and accepted. But the only reward for your loyalty has been anger, indifference, infidelity, or abuse. Your spouse may even be ready to walk out the door.

Do you feel like all is lost? Are you ready to give up? There is still hope.

Dr. James Dobson’s “tough love” principles have proven to be uniquely valuable and effective. Unlike most approaches to marriage crisis, the strategy in this groundbreaking classic does not require the willing cooperation of both spouses. Love Must Be Tough offers the guidance that gives you the best chance of rekindling romance, renewing your relationship, and drawing your partner back into your arms.

Story Behind the Book

This book provides an alternative for those in the midst of family crises. It offers practical tools—tough boundaries based on love and respect—that can draw an apathetic husband or wife back in the direction of commitment. The wrong response in moments of crisis can smother the dying embers of love. On the other hand, human conflict, if properly managed, can be the vehicle for transforming an unstable relationship into a vibrant, healthy marriage.

5 out of 5 stars Put it on your first aid shelf!.......2007-08-04

There is no stronger, more appropriate help for a troubled relationship than this book. It cuts thru the searching for help thru therapists, talk shows and anemic tv shows. I have used the one copy I have of this book to pass on to those who truely needed help with unfaithful spouses and friends, with the stipulation that they return it to me so that I can pass it on to others. All came away stronger and smarter. This book renews your strength and straightens your backbone. Please be brave enough to read it and practice the advice within. God bless you with clear thinking...

5 out of 5 stars Great, Biblical Advice.......2007-07-14

This book was just what I needed, when I needed it. Unfortunately, I had to kick my husband out of the house for cheating only days after reading this book. This book gave me the strengh to do it and the belief that it would be the only way to save my marriage. We are now back together and working towards a better marriage than ever before.

4 out of 5 stars Good, solid advice........2007-07-10

This book is for the spouse who is trying hold the marriage together while the other one wants out. It focuses heavily on infidelity and dealing with that monster, but even if you are not in that boat, it has plenty of sound advice.

4 out of 5 stars Great advice, but The Divorce Remedy is better.......2007-06-28

I got this book right when I discovered my husband was having an affair with a coworker. I was pregnant and taking care of two toddlers, and totally devastated as I went through the nightmare of shock and grief that infidelity causes. I started out clinging to my husband, begging him to come to his senses. Then I got this book, and immediately told him he was free to go. It took tremendous pressure off, but it was excruciating to really let him go at a time I desperately needed him. The hardest part was just getting through the denial stage. it takes so long to actually come to grips that your spouse is so far gone. But once I did that I was able to put Dobson's advice to work. That was six gruelling months ago, and I have just found Michele Weiner Davis' book, The Divorce Remedy, which I WISH I had known about from the beginning. She isn't christian, but her philosophy is near identical to Dobson's. She takes you through a very emotion stabilizing, proactive, productive journey at a time when you feel totally powerless. Her book is about finding solutions that work; Dobson's is more about just the 'tough love' philosophy, with christian sensibilities.
If you find yourself in a similar situation to me you will find both books incredibly inspiring and encouraging. All I can say is that the more self respect and detachment I can muster up, the more my husband seems interested in sticking around. The more I cling, the farther away he goes. I have now experienced this phenomenon repeatedly over the months. Every time I am tough, it gets my husband's attention. I have made some big mistakes, and had some triumphs. I am still trying to wait out my husband's mid life crisis, and I am learning so much about respecting myself while I do so.
If you are neither comfortable with filing divorce, or being a doormat, you will find lots of excellent advice here.

5 out of 5 stars James Dobson writes wonderful material.......2007-05-20

If you are a wife who is struggling with a husband who is not treating you right and will not hear anything you say, then order this book. Dr. Dobson will encourage you to be strong and do what needs to be done to see change come.

Two other books that will help severely troubled marriages are The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! and The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His 2 - Livin' It and Lovin' It! (Volume 2)

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-09-21

This is a MUST read for 2007. It is very good, and very practical and really makes you think. It's is beautifully written. Hands down, amazon is by far the cheapest.

4 out of 5 stars a good success book.......2007-07-22

Cloud does a good job on how to have a successful life. First, you must find what you would like to do as a career. Second, deal with problems by fixing it or eliminating it. Third, create a well thought out plan step by step all the way to reaching successs. Also think about options and see if they will hurt you or help you in the future. Fourth, be proactive, be a person of action. Fifth, be dilligent and industrious by doing something and make progress, no matter how small the progress is. Sixth, Be sure to fix what you hate in a positive way. Seventh, do not seek justice for yourself, seek rather to give mercy and forgive. Eighth, study and grow in humility. Ninth, realize that you cannot please everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Profound, important lessons of life.......2007-05-04

This takes some study and time to read, but the basics rules of life in the book come from decades of counseling and therapy work by this fine doctor.

My favorite and most difficult to achieve? To do the right thing, even though others may become angry or upset. So hard if you are raised to be polite and always try to please. But totally necessary to accomplish what you must in life.

Good job, Dr. Cloud.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for building a life.......2007-04-21

This is the best book I have read for finding success in life - hands down. Any of these "Nine Things" can bring about a great improvement in the reader's quality of life. All of them together is a great foundation for building a life of legacy.

Read it, study it. It's worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars One thing you simply must do: read this book!.......2007-02-08

I have read a lot of motivational books over the years and expected this one to be full of the same type of advice, warmed-over. I was really surprised by how good the book is. I even gave a copy as a Christmas gift to a friend who has a degree in counseling. And in my Toastmasters club, I gave a speech about this book, and one listener recommended it to her book club, and now they're reading it. The book is written in a way that grabs your attention. It's full of ideas on how to gain control of your life and how to handle relationships in a better way.

5 out of 5 stars This one's the best!!.......2004-09-25

This book was wonderful!! I can't explain what great advice Dr.Dobson gives in this book. Basically tough love for marriages. My husband left for 8 weeks and finally came back - one of the reasons is because of this book. You cannot go wrong if you buy this book. It is a little religious, which I wasn't for or against, but it's practical sound advice.

Another great book that has somewhat the same principals as "Love Must Be Tough" is "The Divorce Remedy: The Proven 7-Step Program for Saving Your Marriage". This book was great too and had good advice on how to act towards your mate during the turmoil.

I read many many books during our crisis and these two were the best advice I got. Tough Love. Be strong!

5 out of 5 stars Before & After.......2000-08-29

Before I read Dobson's book I was battling with varying emotions as I tried to figure out why my marriage had taken a turn for the worst.

This book was an excellent source of strength as I struggled to move forward. It felt as though I was the only person on Earth enduring these trials, but I quickly discovered that there were others like me. Dobson's Christian-based perspective and advice allowed me to see my situation in a new light. (I needed to stand my ground, at all times!!!)

After reading this, I wished that someone had given me this book prior to getting married. This book not only offers advice for struggling married couples, but for single individuals as well. (A sense of individuality is key, before entering a relationship.)

I strongly urge anyone with or without a love interest to read the guidelines provided in this valuable resource, in order to prepare for the day the "right" person enters your life.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Reference for Anyone Contemplating Divorce.......2000-06-19

I would recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from the pains of infidelity/divorce in their marriage. It was partciularly helpful to me as I was separated from my spouse and wanting to make reason out of "chaos". Dr. Dobson "calls it like it is". His "Love Must Be Tough" process is the best advice I received from anyone including professional marriage counselors. I found myself so entrenched with this book that I could not put it down. Dr. Dobson's advice is scripturally based yet relevant to today. His advice is "REAL"! I found that it "hurt to read this book", but the result of my experience was truly liberating! I want to personally commend Dr. Dobson for his fine work! PRAISE THE LORD!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2000-02-17

To recover dignity, respect, in a relationship and for yourself with the guidance and security of the pefect love.

5 out of 5 stars It hurt to read it, but I knew it was true..........2000-01-12

This book stopped me from ripping myself to shreds and replaying my marriage, day by day and hour by hour in my head as I tried to figure out what I could have done to keep my husband from being unfaithful. It described all the characteristics that were playing out in front of my eyes. It explained the human aspect of how I responded to him and why he responded to me in a completely different way. It forced me to recognize where my strength lies and it's in that recognition that I found comfort and peace. I am the biggest sceptic and I analyze everything to the nth degree; this book put me in my place.

Book Description

Prozac, Xanax, Halcion, Haldol, Lithium. These psychiatric drugs--and dozens of other short-term "solutions"--are being prescribed by doctors across the country as a quick antidote to depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other psychiatric problems. But at what cost?In this searing, myth-shattering expos, psychiatrist Peter R. Breggin, M.D., breaks throughthe hype and false promises surrounding the "New Psychiatry" and shows how dangerous, even potentially brain-damaging, many of its drugs and treatments are. He asserts that:psychiatric drugs are spreading an epidemic of long-term brain damage; mental "illnesses" like schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorder have never been proven to be genetic or even physical in origin, but are under the jurisdiction of medical doctors; millions of schoolchildren, housewives, elderly people, and others are labeled with medical diagnoses and treated with authoritarian interventions, rather than being patiently listened to, understood, and helped.Toxic Psychiatry sounds a passionate, much-needed wake-up call for everyone who plays a part, active or passive, in America's ever-increasing dependence on harmful psychiatric drugs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars tOXIC pSYCHIATRY.......2007-08-07

This book will open your eyes to the myth that if you can't fix something with a pill, then it can't be fixed at all.

An exvellent read. A bit advanced, but still can be followed and understood. A word of warning: If you have a psychiatrist treating you, he/she probably won't appreciate your input from this book. But I still think it informs and then allows you to discuss treatment options more factually, as opposed to just being passive in your care decisions.

A must read for those who find themselves blindly accepting yet another prescription, because the doctor said to.

5 out of 5 stars Global Drug Abuse!.......2007-01-06

Peter Breggin is the Erin Brokovich of the Psychopharmaceutical Industry! The widespread "chemical abuse" of millions of people by psychiatrists, is an international crime! Peter Breggen's book(s) are the most powerful whistleblower revelations against this global multi-billion dollar psychiatry industry. Governments need to recognise that they are actually funding with billions of taxpayer dollars, the barbaric brain damaging and controlling of multitudes of people they are elected to protect.

"Toxic Psychiatry" is more than a wake up call, it is trumpet call to confront this diabolical nazi-like "poisoning" of millions! It is a must read for all. Having been involved in counselling for nearly 30 years, I have seen first hand the dis-diagnoses and subsequent mind-altering "treatments" of the psychiatric fraternity empowered by the psychopharmaceutical giants. The results of lifelong enslavement to "diagnostic labelling" and to the chronic poisoning by mind/body disabling medications, is a modern day holocaust affecting millions, which continues to be supported by governments of most nations.

2 out of 5 stars Toxic psyachiatry is toxic for parents of the mentally ill.......2006-11-05

I was going to assign this book to my students in my Abnormal Psychology class... The first chapter is powerful and true. However, this author irresponsibly attacks the parents of the mentally ill as responsible for their children's illnesses!!!! He also attacks NAMI, the National Association of the Mentally Ill, an organization that has helped more mentally ill patients recover, find support and their way to a successful and meaningful life, and has truly educated more people about mental illness than Breggin has ever done himself, I am sure. The good points the book makes about inadequate and even harmful psychiatric care in mental institutions are, in my opinion, obfuscated by his unwarranted attacks on parents -- attacks, I believe, that may be a result of his old-fashioned psychoanalytical training.

5 out of 5 stars Only people that has right to say anything about these drugs are the people that have taken them.......2006-05-23

Some people think they are so smart that they know everything about these drugs and chemistry, no matter how smart you are and lets say youre #1 top psychiatrists in the world. If you havent taken the SSRI yourself and experienced the damaging affect of these drugs, you cant say anything PERIOD. Not even if you invented the drug !!!!! Why do we have so many people complaining about these drugs? duh maybe because there is a problem and causing problems!!!, people who havent tried or experience the damaging affects afterwards dont see why people are complaining. We dont see books about warning people not to take for example flu shots do we? No. I used to be one of those people who believed and that popping a pill can solve my life problems but Now because of SSRI my life is ruined and have permanant problems that wont go away. And for people who are currently on SSRI, pills will never ever cure depression unless you stay on them forever,Im sure you are happy with those fake smiles, see what happens when you taper off of them. And people who are FOR these drugs should immediately go to doctors and try them and see how safe they are. I recommend you try prozac first. If that dont work out dont worry there are plenty others that doctors will want you to try. HAHAHA so sad that there are still people out there in this country that really believe these pills can help them.

5 out of 5 stars Argh!.......2006-02-13

I couldn't resist writing this. The ad hominem abusive, straw man, slippery slope and other fallacies running rampant in some of the other reviews are just ridiculous!

First off, comparing insulin to brain chemistry is not a logical argument! Just because it has been proven that certain levels of insulin are necessary for proper metabolism, it does not mean that brain chemistry works the same way!! The two processes are completely different. One is very well understood and proven, while the other is not understood well at all and is definately not proven. Using this logic, I could say that diabetics take insulin, therefore I must take lead to fix my "electrostatic disorder." I cannot invent a disorder in this way, except in a work of fiction! Beware of "convincing" analogies, especially ones that seem like common sense, they are all too often wrong, wrong, wrong, and more wrong.

Breggin also has been in private practice since 1968. If he spent a few years being an expert witness in lawsuits, then that only shows his dedication to his cause, not that he has been "gallivanting around" as one reviewer seems to think! If you want to know a little about Breggin, try http://Breggin.org.

Also, Breggin does not oversimplify the problem and say that "all drugs cause brain damage." He quotes case studies and peer-reviewed journal writings concerning specific drugs and specific disorders. He does not draw his conclusions out of thin air and make only blanket statements! There are no rabbits being pulled out of any hats anywhere but in the review I'm commenting on.

And another thing, just because someone is depressed, it does not mean they will commit suicide! Stop convincing people that they will kill themselves if they don't recieve drugs! It cripples people and makes them unwilling to help themselves! It's not logical and is NOT shown through any studies that a majority of depressed people will kill themselves if not medicated. In fact, studies have shown that the biggest factor of whether a patient improves or not is whether they believe that they will get better or not, it is not whether they recieve psychotropic drugs or not.

Breggin also does not come anywhere close to making it seem that patients are defined by their illness! It's laughable to suggest the notion having read the book! He demands the utmost respect for even the most troubled persons and I believe he shows how there is more to the person that their disorder by his disgust for how psychiatrists don't look for the reasons for a person's disorder but instead only try to match a person to the "diagnostic criteria" of the DSM IV. If anything, the practice of matching patients to illnesses defines a person by their "illness," NOT Breggin's perspective of the patient.

Also, to say that Breggin "throws the baby out with the bathwater," while admitting the book has several good points, only to give it one star is a bit ironic and hypocritical, don't you think?

And in closing for this review.. Just because Tom Cruise and the wacky Scientologists are anti-psychiatry, it does not mean that there is nothing wrong with psychiatry. That is an obvious ad hominem circumstancial fallacy if I have ever heard one. (For those who have no idea what that means, it means that just because someone is part of a group, it does not mean that a statement they have said is wrong. A group may be known for their likely incorrect viewpoints, but it does not make untrue all of the beliefs of every group member. An example would be how Hitler created the idea for the Volkswagon Beatle. The Nazi's were wrong for mass murdering Jews, but that doesn't mean that they were also wrong in thinking that smaller, more efficient cars could actually be a good thing for society.)

Being trapped in dragon form can sure get lonely! Theresa Nichols will do anything to go on a date and have sex- even if it means selling her soul to Satan. Unfortunately, Satan never makes a deal he won't win, as Theresa is soon going to find out. Meanwhile, her first date in forever takes an awful turn when Zeke Siccardi reveals his true nature as an ex-dragon slayer. What will Theresa do when Satan holds her soul and everyone else seems to want her dead?

MUST LOVE DRAGONS is the sequel to the hilarious DATE ME BABY, ONE MORE TIME. Readers will better appreciate this story if they have read the first book, especially in regards to Satan. The relationship between Satan and Iris isn't really explained in MUST LOVE DRAGONS so Satan's motivations are somewhat unclear for those unfamiliar with the back story explained in DATE ME BABY, ONE MORE TIME.

Theresa's story takes so many bizarre and unusual twists that it is almost impossible to figure out where the story is going. I have to admit that the basic premise of the book was a bit difficult for me to believe. Theresa's willingness to sell her soul to Satan for sex seems almost like too easy of a decision for her to make, especially since she has the responsibility of guarding Mona, the Goblet of Eternal Youth. Zeke is a more likeable character. His desire to give up dragon slaying is particularly admirable once his reasons for doing so are revealed. Zeke has a few secrets of his own, however, as neither Zeke nor Theresa is infallible by any means.

Stephanie Rowe is to be commended for her willingness to take chances with this unique series. MUST LOVE DRAGONS is vastly different from any of the other paranormal books out there and therefore definitely worth reading. While the story does seem to go a little too far at times, almost veering into the ridiculous, it is still a series that grabs your attention if only for the shock factor.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable .......2007-08-16

Must Love Dragons by Stephanie Rowe was an enjoyable read. This book picks up where Date Me, Baby, One More Time ends. The focus this time is the dragon, Theresa, and her exploits with her cyberlover Zach. The character of Theresa is amusing and engaging. She lives in the moment without a lot of thought to the consequences of her actions. When what she's done catches up with her, she strives to correct her mistakes. In the course of the book you actually see the character grow. Her love interest isn't all that compelling, but he has his place as does his history. The lovesick Satan is amusing as well. I just have a hard time with the syntax the author uses in his dialog. I'm not sure if he's affecting some sort of accent or not.

Overall, I liked this book better than the first one in the series. I do like the way the author takes a minor character from the first book and moves on to more detail with the second book. I know the third book also picks up with another character and moves forward.

5 out of 5 stars it's my favorite Rachel Gibson's book.......2007-09-18

I've finally found my most favorite Rachel Gibson book, and this is it. The book is laugh out loud funny and the story is believable to me. I liked it.

3 out of 5 stars Letdown.......2005-03-24

I had higher hopes for this book.. The last few chapters were kinda boring.. She saved alot of romance for the ending and then had alot of undecided feelings at the last.. I wished she had put some romance in through the whole book which would have made this book better.. I can only hope the rest of her books I have in my TBR pile will not be such a letdown..

3 out of 5 stars It Must be Love.......2004-10-19

I thought this book had real possibilities when I first started reading it, but it just went flat and the male main character was pushy, overbearing, and crude as one customer reviewer said. It was hard to see how they were going to fall in love since after 150 pages the guy still didn't like the girl at all, and since he was such a jerk, she couldn't like him. The female main character was kind of sweet, so it seems like he should have pretty quickly been somewnat charmed. I think Susan Anderson could have taken this plot and made it really funny and the characters really likeable.

2 out of 5 stars Juvenile.......2004-07-19

It wasn't so much the bland writing or the feeling that I've read this story before, but that the hero and heroine seemed more like high school kids dealing with issues most likely found on the school playground than adults.

Reactions were over the top, and at times I wanted to smack some sense into the heroine. I welcome a variety of characters in my literature, but Gabrielle was far too flighty and clueless for my taste. Joe was overbearing, pushy, and crude. Hey, love alpha males, just don't like reading about obnoxious ones. I couldn't buy the premise of how these two came together, or how they stayed together for that matter.

If you're looking for a cleverly written book involving a flaky heroine and a tough as nails cop, then read Jennifer Crusie's "Getting Rid of Bradley." It's far more entertaining and believable.

5 out of 5 stars I love Mistletoe.......2007-07-14

This book was my first book by this author. I loved it! The story was fast paced and very funny. The secondary characters are great and do not take away from the story. I am definitely going to get other books by this author.

4 out of 5 stars Girl Next Door mixes with Bad Boy - reunion story - SO MUCH FUN !.......2007-03-13

Must Love Mistletoe by Christie Ridgway is a fun modern romance. Bailey returns home to run the families Christmas story while her parents marriage is on the rocks. Her highschool love has moved back in with his grandmother for the month. Sparks fly - but they both have some much baggage it is a interesting journey. Check out Book 2 of the series Not Another New Year's (My favorite so far).

4 out of 5 stars Sexy Christmas cheer!.......2007-03-10

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It definitely had laugh out loud light moments, but it was also balanced with deep tragedy. You could feel the long-ago love emanating from each of them, just waiting to come out and be embraced.

My only problem was that I felt the book was a bit padded with sex scenes. I like them as well as the next girl, but after a few of them, I was ready for the story to move along.

A very fun and sweet book with great style!

4 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-02-10

I enjoyed this book a great deal. I really felt for Finn much more than for Bailey. Very sweet, especially the memories from their teenage years. I loved the hassle-free Christmas theme.

5 out of 5 stars excellent lighthearted Christmas romp.......2006-12-02

She knows why she rooted for Scrooge before he converted as Bailey Sullivan hates Christmas because her family store in Coronado, California, The Perfect Christmas, depends on the Yuletide season to make a profit. She left her hometown to escape the good cheer, holidays and the store, moving to Los Angeles. Now her family needs her so she comes home to help save the store from going bankrupt.

To her shock, Bailey finds her parents arguing; her mother Tracey refuses to even step inside the store that meant so much to her while her stepdad Dan rejects any compromise. Worse is seeing her teenage sweetheart Finn Jacobson; he is home, on sick leave recovering from an on the job injury that left a peer dead and he with a patch on his eye when they did their Secret Service mission stopping an assassin. He does not want to see Bailey even with one eye as she broke his heart over ten years ago and whom he never forgot, but is polite to her when they meet even as he acknowledges she is the only one who asks how he truly is and nada about the eye.

Readers must love Christine Ridegway as she provides an excellent lighthearted Christmas romp starring likable lead characters and a fabulous support cast especially the relatives of Bailey and Finn. The relationships make for a fine time as everyone seems to be in a bah humbug mood but the magic of the season enhanced by love overcomes the nasty disposition. This romance is a winner, but it is critical is for the audience to keep some mistletoe handy (the reason pockets were invented).

Book Description

There IS more than this and you can have it! What keeps us from living the rich, fulfilling lives we desire? Judith Wright has found that too often we are tripped up by our dependence on seemingly harmless habits like shopping, watching TV, gossiping, and surfing the net. These are soft addictions, and they form a powerful net that traps us, preventing us from having more love and meaning in our lives. They fill up our time, but leave us feeling empty, asking, “Is this all there is to life? There must be more than this.”

Judith Wright’s fresh perspective and proven program invite you to overcome your soft addictions and discover MORE–a full, engaging life of more intimacy, purpose, joy, satisfaction and love. She promises a life in which you advance your goals and your vision every day. You will live more purposefully and feel more intensely, stop asking the small questions and start asking the big ones. You will fill your life with meaningful activity, and your soft addictions will fall away.

Educator and life coach Judith Wright coined the term soft addictions™ after years of working with students who came to her courses to get more out of life. They would experience insights in class but be unable to fully apply them to their lives. Wright found that her students were limiting their experience and enjoyment of life by engaging in unsatisfying routines. She discovered that these time wasters and draining habits, which she named soft addictions, have a powerful hold on us because they satisfy certain wants–to zone out, feel busy, numb painful feelings, or avoid anxieties–but ignore deeper hungers for love, beauty, spirituality and meaning. They substitute a superficial high or sense of activity for a sense of genuine purpose and fulfillment. In a very real sense, we become hooked on these habitual behaviors. But unlike drugs or alcohol, our soft addictions arrive in the seductive guise of a “normal,” socially acceptable activity.

There Must Be More Than This helps you identify and fulfill the deeper longings behind your soft addictions. Judith Wright’s eight-step program has now been used by hundreds of her students to overcome their soft addictions and open up their lives to a greater sense of purpose and happiness. There Must Be More Than This shares her methods, along with real-life, inspirational stories of success. Invite More into your life and know that you are living the life you were meant to live.

3 out of 5 stars We Should Strive to Just Be Ourselves........2005-04-25

When I picked this book up at the library, I was reminded of the Peggy Lee song, 'Is That All There Is to Love?' I enjoyed the quotes interspersed by Mark Twain, Margaret Mead, Albert Schweitzer, Clarence Darrow and especially liked "The proper function of a man is to live, not to (merely) exist" by Jack London.

Soft addictions are described as unhealthy habits, unlike hard addictions (certain foods, alcohol, medications, cigarettes, bad thoughts, game playing), but they serve to drain our energies and sense of fulfillment. We use them as time wasters to provide a sense of activity to feel that we are achieving something -- but actually we are using these traps to avoid real problems. What we are doing appear "normal" (shopping, t.v. for company, computer games) but we are left with a feeling of emptiness and being unsatisfied.

The author, Judith Wright, confessed: "Only after I faced the unhappiness of my first marriage did I start on the path of personal growth." A man you trusted and loved in the beginning can inflict real damage to your whole being with his criticism and harshness. A man does not have to act tough to be a man (nor does he have to wear cowboy boots), but he shouldn't talk like a woman, either. It seems we have a need for elocution teachers again to show a young adult male how to lower his voice and not just act like a man but sound like one as well.

Being the mother of three sons, growing up with a brother three years older than I with only a father at home, I can honestly say I've been around men most of my life, and accepted each as an individual. Guess I was lucky that none were effeminent in any way. Returning to East Tennessee to 'retire' the first thing which bothered me was the way the men here talk in the higher register, and I commented that their wives had deeper voices than they. I don't (never did) sound like a man, but I have a definite Southern drawl unlike the Knoxville harshness -- which I developed while I was away. We talk like the people around us, everybody knows that. I look Knoxville (short, dark eyes, a natural wave in my natural hair, a fighting spirit for doing "what's right"), but I don't sound Knoxville, and the twain shall never meet.

Ms Wright lists various activities she says when overdone become soft addictions such as media, buying/shopping, sexual, risk taking, card games, crossword puzzles when done alone. Moods, self-pity, chameleon-like behavior, sarcasm, crankiness, evading and escaping social interrraction, oversleeping, isolation AND things (edible & consumable) like fast foods, coffee, snack foods, cigarettes, and brand-name merchandise: all can turn into addictions.

This book is interesting in the fact of learning these facts. After twenty years of developing personal growth programs, she and husband, Bob, have developed MORE through seminars, now on a web site and the eight-step program spelled out in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Book is based on Christian values.......2005-03-15

There are some interesting ideas presented here. However it isn't a book for everyone: it is written from a devout Christian point of view.

If the authors were more clear about that on the cover and in the description, then that would be fine. But there weren't any clues until I started reading the text.

Here's an example from page 139: "We are meant to be addicted to God, but we develop secondary addictions that temporarily appear to fix our problem."

As an alternative, I'd suggest an awareness practice. They tend to be based on the same core material, and can work hand-in-hand with any set of spiritual beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars Compassion for People with Soft Addictions.......2004-09-20

Judith Wright has put together a unique way of creating more success in your life by getting rid of the small things which rob you of time and energy. Being a slave of soft addictions is a much larger problem than people realize. She writes with a warm voice of compassion for those who are struggling. She give examples in the book which completely illustrate the problem and possible solutions. She isn't asking people to institute extreme practices in their lives. She offers real insight to the real needs the person's behavior reveals. This is one book you will be glad

5 out of 5 stars Our Next Step.......2003-05-15

Judith Wright outlines for us the next step in our evolution as spiritual beings in a human body. No, it is not meditating till we ascend. It is paying attention to the details of our everyday life. As an author and director of The School of Spiritual Psychology, I know the rigors of making genuine change in one's life. Judith leads us to making the major decision needed to take this leap. Then she gives practicle steps to fulfillment along our path. We supply the commitment and grit to stay with her on the road.
This is the real thing.
Thank you, Judith.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise.......2003-05-02

I'm not big on self help books, well most books. There are two I keep in my favorites shelf: 'The Little Guide To Happiness' and 'How To Win Friends And Influence People'. Both great books. The rest on my shelf is all fiction. But this book was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't looking for it. Instead a friend gave it to me. I'm glad she did. What a wonder!!

Book Description

Now in paperback– the ten things we must do to ensure a safe and peaceful world, from legendary environmentalist Jane Goodall and brilliant animal behaviorist, Marc Bekoff.

Combining her life's work living among the chimpanzees with her spiritual perspective on the relationship between humans and animals, legendary behavioral scientist Jane Goodall sets forth ten trusts that we as humans have as custodians of the planet:

1. Respect all life

2. Live as part of the Animal Kingdom

3. Educate our children to respect animals

4. Treat animals as you would like to be treated

5. Be a steward

6. Value the sounds of nature and help preserve them

7. Do not harm life in order to learn about it

8. Have the courage of your convictions

9. Act knowing that your actions make a difference

10. Act knowing that you are not alone.

Filled with inspirational stories, The Ten Trusts provides lessons Jane Goodall has learned from a lifetime of experience, with the warmth and emotion her readers have come to expect from her. Marc Bekoff, cofounder of the Roots and Shoots program with Jane, also contributes his profound insights and research, which Jane has come to rely on. Together, they share their hope and vision for humanity and all the earth's creatures, distilled into ten eloquent spiritual lessons. Within these ten trusts, Goodall reveals how we can gain true enlightenment by living in harmony with the animal kingdom and honoring the interconnection between all species.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Respect for all species.......2007-06-15

It's nice to see and qualify the feelings many of us have had since childhood about loving animals. It seems to get faded as we grow older and integrate in a society that has put a lesser value on them for some reason. But here is a book that helps us accept those good emotions of the past and perpetuates the feeling that one day all life will be regarded having equal value. What Jane has done in the world is amazing and rocked the boat of science and for that reason alone one should experience her writing. Animals certainly can teach us a lot about ourselves..and this can only make our lives better. If you are ready, read this light hearted, easy to read book.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking Out For Those That Can't.......2007-05-27

One additional trust are the author's themselves; who better to speak for the animals than Jane Goodall and Marc Bekoff? The formatting of conversational style writing with each author's commentary separately noted, gives an insight and understanding of their personal experience, and individual dedication relating to their life passions. The stories, facts, and touching emotions that come through in the author's words, should make anyone stand up and want to do something, no matter how big or small, to make a difference in helping to save our natural environment. The world needs more great people like Goodall and Bekoff, to speak out for those that cannot, before it is too late.

5 out of 5 stars A Global Essential.......2004-05-29

Of the many books I have read dealing with environmental issues, this has had a major impact. The authors have tremendous credibility and scientific knowledge. If ever there was a canary in the mine, it is this book. We have plundered our planet, ignored the quality of life for other sentient beings, and have failed to see the need for a balance in nature and our own lives.
There are messages here that all should heed. But, most of all, there is hope if we pay attention.
Our current U.S. and world leadership has failed our planet. Hopefully, there are those who can steer the world back on course.
Thank you Jane and Marc.

5 out of 5 stars Together we can make a difference.......2004-03-02

This book lay for months on my bedside table before I found the strength to read it. I could not bear to touch it because I knew it would contain suffering. The book makes powerful painful reading. Once I started reading it I just could not put it down. In order to be able to make a difference I really needed to know what is going between humans and animals. How we abuse them. The book is not all gloom, it also tells about many persons who have come forward in their defence of animals. Sometimes even at great persnal loss.
The ten trusts are gives you a way to know!

5 out of 5 stars Rebuilding Our Ethics Through Trust.......2002-11-09

Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Marc Bekoff have compiled ideas, stories, experience and much more about living a humane and ethical life into a book accessible to all. As the animal protection community has done for 50 years, this book shows that humans must respect the environment and all life if we, as a species, expect to survive. It is a very simple premise yet humanity has yet to catch on. The Ten Trusts not only gives us a path to follow, but it shows how others have acted before in trying to alter destructive patterns. Caring for others (animals, humans and nature) is not something radical, it is - humane! It is something everyone must do.

Goodall and Bekoff share their experiences from living a life of compassion and a boundless ethic. Few people are as well known and respected as Jane Goodall, but she has never rested on her fame. Instead, she stepped away from her field research and beloved friends in Gombe National Park, not to build monetary wealth, but to share her wealth of knowledge with young and old alike through lectures and programs such as Roots and Shoots. While Bekoff has spent years educating a more humane youth at the University of Colorado, all while helping us to better understand and appreciate animal behavior.

Over the last two years the Bush administration has systematically deconstructed even basic protections for the environment in order to please corporate greed. The Ten Trusts talks about many issues, one of which will certainly reappear following recent elections, is the drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR. Even though the American public is opposed to destroying the last pristine environment, the Administration hopes to lull us into a belief that it is needed.

This does not have to be. Goodall, who revolutionized how humans think about other species through her work with chimpanzees and Bekoff, who is a leader in showing us that the minds of animals are as unique and complex as ours, have concisely gathered a wonderful set of ethics into an easily readable book. A book that everyone should read because it shows how we really can and MUST be compassionate.
