2 out of 5 stars Boring book, but what else are you going to get?.......2007-10-06

Unfortunately, there really isn't much material out there that covers the MCPD certifications. In fact, based on my brief search, this was the only book that covered it. So it was either get this book or just go off the list of material posted on the Microsoft website. The book does provide three 15% off vouchers and a program of test questions. And for that, it gets the +2 stars.

After that, the material is pretty weak. It's written as-is (kinda ben stein-ish) and the code is confusing to read. I often times have to look at the MSDN equivalent material to get a better understanding of what the author was really trying to say and/or code. But again, what are you going to do? The list that microsoft presents on their certifications page is too vague, you need direction.

You're going to definately need more material to look through outside of what's in the book, but it's a good place to build from. So far I have just taken 1 out of the 3 tests, but I passed on my first time. If you were to use the book as a guide, shouldn't be a problem to do the same.

2 out of 5 stars Good test prep, but otherwise sparse content.......2007-09-20

Reading these books, I find them to be good resources for preparing for the exams, but I know that they will not become the trusted dog-eared references that I would have hoped them to be. Useful content is sparse; a lot of text seems to be wrapped up in the presentation of the material and it leaves it a little verbose. Furthermore, the books are badly edited and I find myself distracted by the flagrant mistakes that one can find every couple of pages. The mistakes do not seem to be so bad, however, that one cannot easily discover the error and compensate; they are also seldom technical in origin, though the (more often) grammatical mistakes or the (occasional) omitted negation *could* lead one to misconstrue the meaning of a particular passage.

I have been exceptionally upset on the occasion when I discovered an obvious case of text pasted from another section of the book that had not been properly modified for the new context, and so, badly referred to the old context. This is just careless.

Aside from this, the material is otherwise very clear and very simply put.

5 out of 5 stars Great books for step by step learning........2007-07-29

I found these books very helpful. Most of the topics are very well explained and are related to the exam.

1 out of 5 stars I did not receive.......2007-06-27

To international buyers: I've ordered this Kit twice and i didn't receive yet. I wish i could review this product.
If you need something from Amazon with urgency, it is a risky business.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-09-21

Recommended for "Power-Users," or those people that are comfortable working in Office, etc. Not for techies, per se, and perhaps a bit much for the average user. Get it for those people that will comfortably read a 300 page book on a computer program and then actually do something with it. Don't get it for those whose permissions you wouldn't dare leave without significant restrictions.

Has been very helpful to me as someone new to SharePoint. Only 4 stars because it's a bit much for the average user that we have in our organization -- I 'm not sold that I could distribute this as a User's Guide and expect increased understanding of how it works from the typical user. Perhaps it takes this much detail to present the information, but the lack of a general "how-to" or "quick-start" section makes me think that most users will be intimidated by the size and scope of the book and never crack it open.

However, from a Power User perspective, this book is excellent. The writing is clear and well-organized. I've been able to find just about everything I've needed to understand and answered most questions that have come to mind. I like how the book presents the different choices available, without shoe-horning you into the author's preferred choice. Comparing it to explanations available online, the information it typically presented better in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for various skill-level users........2007-09-07

This book is easy to use both as a learning tool and a reference tool. The many examples provided give good background on the context of the desired function, and explicit, step-by-step instructions. The book has lots of "usage" suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars Decent SharePoint 2007 User's Guide.......2007-08-20

SharePoint 2007 User's Guide definitely touches on the many topics necessary for the end users to learn the MOSS productivity platform.
Overall, the book is very informative. My only complaint is the style that it is written doesn't include any examples/exercises for the user to follow. There are definitely how-tos in this book, however, there are more examples for what can be done and not how to do it especially in the waning chapters of the book. There is very little useful hands on in the chapters regarding Document Management and Collaboration.
Regardless, it is still a good short reading and if you are new to SharePoint you will get much out of it.
If you are interested in a more robust read try Beginning SharePoint 2007 from Wrox. A book on the same topic with much more useful content.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable reference guide to make the most out of SharePoint functionality.......2007-08-05

We have learned our lesson that the more we customize in SharePoint 2003, the harder it is to upgrade to SharePoint 2007. Going forward, we want to leverage more of the out-of-the-box functionality and stay away customizations. This is a great reference book for making the most out of SharePoint. If you know the functionality you want in team-collaboration sites (e.g. project team site, deal site, product site) or information-sharing sites (e.g. research & publication site, HR & benefits site), it is a valuable resource to understand various building blocks and know which tool to use.

I do not recommend this book for developers, but found to be useful for power-users, business analysts, functional analysts, content managers, MsOffice specialists or anyone else who wants to learn what you can do with SharePoint.

2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disapointment.......2007-07-09

For a technology book, it's well below par.

The majority of the content in this book is just a repackaging of the help available in SharePoint; and much of that is pretty well obvious. I knew zero (nothing) about SharePoint before getting this book. I found that the organization and presentation of information in the book didn't parallel any sandbox/tutorial workflow, nor did it approach topics from any broader "good design" perspective. To date, well more than 90% of my SharePoint answers have come from the web, not this book.

The chapter on "list concepts" was helpful, and probably saved me some time and effort. For that alone it was worth the $26. But overall, I was hoping for a better book based on the early reviews I read (Note: only the April-07 reviews were here when I bought the book).

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

Everything you need to prepare for the Exchange 2007 test. In depth information and a great reference book for "in the field" work.

4 out of 5 stars A Great resource.......2007-05-14

Assisted in my upgrade from Exchange 2003 tremendously. A Great resource amd very complete. Only one glitch (installing Exchange Management console in step 3 of upgrade should be installing Microsoft powershell.)

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful!.......2007-04-07

We spent the past 4 weeks planning our migration from Exchange 2000 and 2003 to Exchange 2007 using this book, and complted the migration last weekend with complete success! (14 backend servers, 1.8 terabytes of mail). The planning and sizing information was very helpful, the step by step guidance walked us through the process, and we're now down to 4 clustered servers with Hub Transport policies managing our incoming and outgoing mail. We also found the tips and best practices to be very helpful, unlike the Microsoft installation whitepapers that walk you through the procedures, this book actually explained what not to do as often as it said what to do which is EXTREMELY helpful when you are trying to decide which option to select compared to another.

I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to migrate their organization to Exchange 2007, the information in this book definitely helped us have a successful migration!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but not very good either.......2007-03-16

I ordered this book due to the fact that it was the first released book for Exchange 2007 on Amazon but apparently there was a reason. Live a earlier reviewer said there are a lot of errors in this book and it makes you wary if you can trust the things that are being said as fact when some of it doesn't sound exactly right.

Mainly this book is huge! going well over 1000 pages but so much of the book is just the same thing repeated over and over again. Also I don't understand the need to go into some many other topics in this book. This book covers so many other Microsoft products like AD, DNS, security WSUS, MOM, even how to install Windows server 2003! With so many thing going on in this book it's hard to find the real meat on what you bought the book for... Exchange 2007.

I would say this book is a good reference guide and will be able to help you with your migrations but look for something else to pass exam 70-236 or to get a better grasp into the inner workings of Exchange 2007.

3 out of 5 stars Good & Bad.......2007-02-24

I agree with Mitchell there are some errors in the text..but there are a lot of features i had no idea were available in Exchange like Safelist Aggregation until i read this book. Overall it's still a good investment when learning the new Exchange Server.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very concise reference material.......2007-10-05

This book is very well organized and contains most of the material needed to pass the exam. It is a great reference book for development as well.

4 out of 5 stars The book teaches you how to make professional web sites........2007-09-09

Before writing of this review I have read some rumours about the book. Some people say it does not cover all the details for the exam itself. Again as with 70-536 Training Kit from the same set I have found out that the contrary is true. It is a very good book that concentrates on main aspects of .NET web development. Even a beginner after reading the book is able to use EVERY important functionality. Of course if you are a professional you have to study and develop yourself your .NET web applications at least in order to confirm and assure what you have learned. Again the book is very self-motivating. Probably that is also the main reason why some in-depth details are missing at right places and moments. The book has all you need to master the technology and exam itself.

3 out of 5 stars 2 many authors........2007-09-04

This review is about the unfortunate disparity in abilities of the 2 authors: Glenn Johnson and Tony Northrup.
Johnson is a nice surprise to those who read microsoft training manuals. He anticipates reader's problems and never leaves you frustrated.
Northrup is the opposite. His chapters are irritatingly lacking in necessary examples and thorough explanations. You cannot avoid the notion that he is taking the easy way out. At times I believe I can hear his X-Box 360 running in the background
In chapter 9, lesson 3 on using WebParts, he admonishes the reader that its up to him to spring ahead many pages to some of the labs at the end of the lesson. He doesn't bother to provide enough of an explanation to do you any good. Mr. Johnson, again, provides both immediate examples and labs.
This is typical.
I don't see how you can avoid being frustrated by this. Carefully crafted explanations followed immediately by examples is the norm. Johnson takes of this, Northrup leaves you constantly throwing your hands up.
I am learning quite a bit, however. You can master much of the elements of Net 2.0 using this book. Be prepared to do additional online research of Mr. Northrups chapters, however.

5 out of 5 stars Passed First Time, but . . ........2007-08-16

I used the book as my principle but not sole source of study material, and I was able to pass the exam today the first time I took it.

The book covers all the * topics * on the exam, but the book alone will not help you to pass.

I credit these factors:
1. Reading the book
2. Doing the lab exercises and case scenarios, especially if it's a topic you're not familiar with.
3. Taking the practice exams on the CD - then clicking the More Info links - you do need to read the info on the MSDN site.
4. Having experience with ASP.NET - I don't see how you can pass without work experience, unless you make lucky guesses

Also, if you come across a question that totally stumps you, just try to reason through it, don't make a blind guess.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT ENOUGH........2007-08-01

I will agree with the other reviewer who said that this book alone is NOT enough to pass the test.

After deciding to take the exam, I searched high and low for books and this was the only 70-528 prep book I could find. I got this book and spent months going over it and taking the practice exams. I could easily pass the practice exam questions before I went in and felt like I had a good grasp of the material. Another reviewer said that they passed the exam despite the fact that they failed the practice exam, and I honestly do not know how they could have passed. Based on co-worker's comparison of the this book and the practice exams for test 70-536, I decided to go in and take the test.

Let me tell you, the book does NOT go into enough detail in either the examples/text/lessons OR the practice exam. I managed to barely pass the exam by the skin of my teeth.. mostly using this book as a basis and all my on the job experience as a supplement. Unless you are a hands on developer with a fair amount of job experience to back you, just using this book to prepare is NOT going to be enough.

Do yourself a favor and have a very thorough grasp on the material or be prepared to throw the money away.

5 out of 5 stars Best Server Book Around.......2007-10-02

This book is extremely valuable as reference after you have read it through carefully. Everything is in "Plain English", so whether you are a novice or advanced in the field, this will answer your questions. This is "a must" for anyone wanting to learn about Windows Server 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-09-17

Fantastic. Still reading it, but this is a worthy reference guide and a long but interesting read. The only book I'll own on the subject. No need for anything else, as far as I can tell.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2007-08-13

If you're looking for a Windows 2003 book, this is the one. It's comprehensive and well written in a way that caters to newbies and experts alike. As a plus it's printed on high contrast paper in a very readable font.

3 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things..........2006-08-31

Good:
-Good coverage of main topics (DHCP, DSN, AD).
-Practical perspective, examples and troubleshooting.
-A lot of information that eventually could be useful.

Bad:
-Fisically the book is too big, difficult to hold, this becomes a problem. It should be divided in two parts, the important topics and the rarely used information.
-Minasi exposition is not clear. He tries so hard to entertain the reader, and his writing lacks structure. He jumps to specific topics that extend many pages, use too many words to express simple things. Sometimes is really exasperating: "come on man, GET TO THE POINT!, don't waste my time".
-Have a lot of typos, i think because is based in the prior edition.

I think the book is too tangled to be useful for begginers, and too disperse to be helpful for experts. No doubt Minasi has profound knowledge of the product and writing skills, but needs STRUCTURE and SOBRIETY.

I rate the book three stars just because knowing nothing i made it settting a windows network with DSN,DHCP,Active directory,VPN and Terminal services. The book contains the information but the reader, not the author, is who organize it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for salespeople but for consultants and other business people who need to get "projects" booked.......2007-10-07

This book isn't as bad as some reviewers have written or as good as others have raved about. This book isn't for salespeople and because of that I was disappointed. This book is for professionals that have to "book themselves," such as public speakers, lawyers, accountants and the like. In some ways if you don't already know what this book teaches you better get a job. However, as the E-Myth points out there are plenty of people that are good at what they do but are clueless about how to get themselves business. If you fall into this category this is a good book to read and implement.

Port's book is long and at times wordy but a fun and easy read. There are diamonds here but you have to mine through a lot of ore to get at them. The book is well written and conversational. I can see why Mr. Port has a successful career. This book is perhaps a good first read if you're considering starting your own business or want to get more clients. For a solid and measurable program I recommend "Get Clients Now" by C. J. Hayden or "Get Business to Come to You" by Sarah and Paul Edwards.

5 out of 5 stars Solid marketing book!.......2007-10-05

This book provides a great marketing overview. It leads the reader through finding a target market, branding, being selective in choosing clients (some fresh insights for many readers here!), presenting yourself and business to prospective clients, web marketing, networking, publicity and more. Your marketing structure and systems will NOT look the same - and thus your results will not be the same - if you read this book and put its numerous tips and advice to work for you.

Beyond sales and marketing professionals, this is a great resource for any business person who markets their service or products themselves - including small business owners, consultants and trainers, and small professional firms (financial planners, lawyers, dentists, etc.). This is especially true for those who are just starting out and those who do not like to market themselves (you know who you are!).

Michael's emphasis on personal integrity really appealed to me (if you don't like a client, you will sacrifice your integrity by putting yourself in a position of not being able to give your full effort). His process is about building a steady pipeline of highly-qualified prospects that you will ENJOY working with and to whom you can provide full value.

All in all, a solid book. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-09-15

This book got me up and running with SSRS in no time. I even had a problem with getting something to work, emailed Brian, the author, and he replied to my email within the same day and my problem was solved. This is definately a great book.

He steps you through creating a dataset, creating the report and explaining all the intricacies of creating the report and there are a lot of details involved and the report works. The few times my report didn't work, I went back and realized I missed a step and after reworking things, the report worked. Definately a must have if you need to learn SSRS.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning Tool.......2007-09-12

I thought this book was an excellent learning tool. It introduces information one chapter at a time, and each subsequent chapter reinforces what was previously learned. The only complaint I have about this book is that you have to read it cover to cover to get the most out of it, so it isn't a very good quick reference, but I would still highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn SQL Reporting Services.

5 out of 5 stars Probably best book out on SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.......2007-07-04

Very well done. Lots of good hands on exercises that all work, well, except for one that deals with web service I had a problem with. Lots of good tips on both creating and managing reports.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview.......2007-06-14

Brian manages to give the reader everything one would need to know to start creating their own reports in a very readable, approachable book.

Brian starts by introducing his case study and walking the reader through the install of the database. What I like about the database is it's sized well (not oppressively large, but large enough to allow you to create realistic reports). He then spends a chapter on SQL basics. Most people first getting into Reporting Services haven't done a lot of SQL, so it's nice to have the chapter there.

He then moves on to the wizard. He shows off both the table as well as the matrix, and how you can modify the reports that the wizard creates.

Several chapters are spent on creating reports from scratch, highlighting all of the major tools in SSRS - charts, tables, etc. Every example is succinct, but realistic enough. Each exercise is step-by-step with an explanation at the end as to what it is you just did.

I do have a couple of small complaints here. I could not find the SQL queries anywhere on the site or in the download. Maybe I missed them, but it would have been nice to have the SQL ready to go. The book, while fantastic for first learning SSRS, doesn't lend itself well to being a reference guide. There are several options that show up that Brian doesn't stop to explain fully.

From there, he moves into managing your report server using the Report Manager. He was mostly step-by-step here, but I did think the section on Security could have been a tad clearer.

He finishes up in the Appendix with the Report Builder, easily one of the biggest features in SSRS 2005.

All-in-all this is a fantastic book if you are looking to get into SSRS for the first time. Don't let the size of the book fool you; since the majority of it is steyp-by-step instructions, it reads much faster than its size would indicate. You will need to be in front of a computer in order to read the book, which works well for me since I need to do it to grok it.

My only small complaint about the book is that it doesn't lend itself well to being a reference guide later. It's not enough of a beef, though, to knock a star off the review.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-05-10

we have over a dozen SQL SERVER 2005 suite books in our office. The thing that makes this better then all the others, is that while some people like reading these books, and others like books as references only - this book seems to satisfy both groups of developers at my office.
The most used SSRS book at the office by a mile.

Book Description

This thorough, hands-on reference for database developers and administrators delivers expert guidance on sophisticated uses of Transact-SQL (T-SQL)#151;one of the most familiar and powerful programming languages for SQL Server. Written by a T-SQL guru, this guide focuses on language features and how they are interpreted and processed by the SQL Server execution engine. You'll get in-depth coverage of the sophisticated uses of T-SQL, including triggers, user-defined functions, exception handling, and more. The book explains and compares solutions to database-development problems in both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005, discussing the new T-SQL programming features added to SQL Server 2005 in detail. Includes extensive code samples, table examples, and logic puzzles to help database developers and administrators understand the intricacies and help promote mastery of T-SQL.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very little actual T-SQL.......2007-09-25

Book actually has very limited T-SQL. Mostly triggers, USP, functions, but little actual code.

2 out of 5 stars Too clever by half.......2007-08-06

Please see review by C. Mialaret. S/he is spot on.

One gets the impression that the author may have been more focused on impressing you with his eruditeness, rather than writing a practical book with useful examples and clear explanations.

Affecianados of Kalen Delaney's 'Inside SQL Server 2000' will be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but COULD be much better. Needs major editorial intervention........2007-07-26

You should think of this book as of the second volume of the two-volume set on the 2005-Server SQL. If you get this one, you'll get the other one too; neither tome is self-sufficient; in fact there's a lot of explicit interdependence. This book, Programming, deals with slightly more esoteric features than the first tome, Querying -- although I can't say you must read the first entire volume before touching this one. Both books can be read at the same time (but see what I say about the target reader below).

So, real quick:

1. Target reader: someone with a good grasp of the 2000 Server wishing to learn the new stuff that came with the 2005 server (there's a lot: the 2005 product is _much_ better than the previous: covering new features is probably the only thing that's unequivocally good about this book). This is NOT your first, nor second, nor third book on SQL in general or MS SQL Server in particular. You must have a good grasp of the basics to be able to overcome this book. I say 'overcome' advisedly; more on it below.

2. Content: Data-type subtleties (datetime, xml, CLR user-defined types -- a lot of CLR in this volume); temporary tables, cursors, dynamic SQL, views, user-defined funcs, stored procs, triggers, a bit on transactions, exception handling, a bit on service broker.

3. Very clean technically: no technical errors (and while we're here: I found no typos either).

4. Depth vs breadth: the book is more extensive than deep, although on average it's (inevitably) more in-depth than the first volume. Some reviewers here say it's very deep or difficult -- and difficult is true, although not because of PhD anything. This, unfortunately, brings me to the next point:

5. Writing: ABHORRENT. (Both volumes, Querying, and Programming, in about the same degree). That's why it seems difficult, PhD and so on -- except this difficulty isn't due to, say, conceptual complexity of the subject matter. It's the authors' extreme inability to use the English language to explain things that makes reading this book such a chore. There is also conceptual muddle (unsurprisingly: people write as they think).

Now, experience taught me to forgive literary incapacity to a _technical_ author (to a degree; and I do take notice and, if possible, avoid him in the future). In cases like that I put the blame squarely on the publisher, especially if otherwise I know the publisher to be solid. I have a pile of books from Microsoft Press and I consider them a good publisher, so what's the matter?

Although (strangely) a bit better than the first volume, this book (Programming) is also strewn with unimaginable, fantastic garbage of every possible kind, from grating usage errors to a pervasive lack of unity, coherence, and logical connectedness on the page/paragraph level, to a frequent lack of the overall unity. When I bought this book and read it a bit I was so p-off I almost sent it back (I got as far as getting an RMA from Amazon). I did keep it though. Both of them, actually.

Do I recommend this book? It has been useful to me (especially the UDF section: there's a lot of new stuff, all very handy), so -- with great reservation, and only to the right reader -- yes, kinda. And please check out what else is available (there's tons of books on the 2005 server these days). The Programming book is part of the three-volume update and extension of the server-2000 version by Delaney. Delaney's server-2000 book was extremely useful and quite decently written. I wish they let her write the new version, even though it's now three books instead of one, and I suppose it's difficult for one person to do it all.

5 out of 5 stars T-SQL Book at Its Best!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-23

This book has lots of sample code for developers to follow. I bought a book "Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000" written by Itzik Ben-gan about five years and loved the book. This book did great job in the SQL Scripts where you might need to spent sometime read through it.

This book is a gem for SQL developers!!! Highly recommanded!!!
