Book Description
The fast lane is much too slow for Rachel Walsh. And Manhattan is the perfect place for a young Irish female to overdo everything. But Rachel's love of a good time is about to land her in the emergency room. It will also cost her a job and the boyfriend she adores.
When her loving family hustles her back home and checks her into Ireland's answer to the Betty Ford Clinic, Rachel is hopeful. Perhaps it will be lovely—spa treatments, celebrities, that kind of thing. Instead, she finds a lot of group therapy, which leads her, against her will, to some important self-knowledge. She will also find something that all women like herself fear: a man who might actually be good for her.
Customer Reviews:
Another great read from Marian Keyes!.......2007-06-23
I'll try to keep this short and sweet...
I've read two other Marian Keyes novels and this is my favorite so far. I have to admit that I wasn't super-excited about the subject matter (drug addiction)but I quickly changed my mind. It really grabbed me right from the beginning and I found myself genuinely caring about what would happen next to Rachel, the drug-addicted main character.
In the usual style of Marian Keyes, this book is really in touch with what young women think and feel. But it goes further than that, to delve into the psyche of an addict. It doesn't seem superficial or corny, but rather very real and alarmingly close to home. I found this book to be incredibly believable and touching.
Deep thoughts from a "light" read.......2007-06-13
This book gave me a nervous breakdown.
No, really. Despite the fact that I have never taken drugs in my life, and average maybe one alcoholic drink per year, this tale of a woman's struggles with addiction--and more importantly, the psycholigical reasons for that addiction--turned me into a quivering mass of goo.
This book actually caused me to quit my job. No. Really. I did. After seeing Rachel's struggles with dependency and unhealthy relationships, it became very clear to me that my job WAS my dependency, and the most unhealthy of any of my relationships.
Part of me wants to give the book 5 stars for being such a huge influence on my life and my mental health. Another part of me wants to give it 1 star, for exactly the same reason. I know I'll never read it again. It sits on my bookshelf, and every time I see it, I get a shiver from the memory of all the pain and self-reflection it induced.
I can't say everyone is going to have such a life-altering reaction to the book, but if you know someone with an addiction, someone in an unhealthy relationship, someone who simply needs help, try slipping her this book. It looks like a lighthearted read. But it packs a big whallop.
My favorite M. Keyes book!.......2007-05-20
I absolutely loved this book! Although much of the content was sad, it was so well written that you are unable to put it down. All of us have known addicts or been one; her description of the stages Rachel went through was very good. However, as others have observed, my favorite part of this book was the love story between Rachel and Luke. And this was a love story-of Rachel learning how to love herself as well. Hope to hear much more about Luke and Rachel: how about another book just for these two? A must read.
Excellent fiction about addiction and recovery.......2007-04-15
I first read Rachel's Holiday waaaaay back in 2000, right after I started reading romance again. I read Keyes's Watermelon first, didn't like it much, then was blown away by Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, then was dismayed to find nothing else Keyes on the library shelf. Back in 2000 Keyes didn't have all that much of a backlist, even less in America. I checked amazon.co.uk to see when her next was due, and found out it was still a while. Then serendipitously, while browsing in a discount bookstore, I found a British copy of Rachel's Holiday just sitting there waiting to be discovered by an American reader. I snapped it right up, took it home, and read it practically in one sitting.
What I remember most is pouring over the Luke bits. To my relatively unexplosed romance mind, they were scorching. Luke was da man, even in his leather pants. I was completely jealous that this other Rachel had him. The rest of the book, all of the addiction stuff, was pretty good too.
Anyway, this book has been sitting untouched on my bookshelf since 2000, just gathering dust. Then a week or so ago, I saw something on the internet, a reader's recommendation, that made me want to pick it up again. I thought it was every bit as good as I found it the first time around, but for different reasons.
Rachel Walsh is in a muddle. Everyone in her life is upset at her, and her transplanted Irishman's life in NYC is about to come to an abrupt end and all because she accidentally took a few too many pills one night and ended up in the emergency room getting her stomach pumped. This could happen to anyone, she feels, but her friends, her boyfriend, Luke, and her family feel differently. Before she knows it, she's on a plane back to Ireland and, from there, incarcerated in a treatment facility, the Cloisters, for drug addiction. Rachel went along with the hysteria because she'd heard of the Cloisters - its famous "clients" and its fabulous spa-like facilities - but now that she's there, things aren't quite as she'd expected.
They're treating her as if she were like the other losers there - a real addict. And that's not so posh nor so funny.
What I'd forgotten about this book is how funny it is, in a dark sort of way. The humor isn't black, but it's pretty tarnished. A nice dark gray. Rachel's observations about her surroundings and her problems are both cutting and self-deprecating at the same time. I laughed continually throughout, so much so that Max finally got sick of it, and told me to "Knock ert off, Mommy!" He wanted to know what the joke was.
Keyes pulls off a pretty intereresting narratorial feat with Rachel, making her snobbish and humble at the same time, taking her time in revealing the true Rachel. This is even more impressive as the book is done in first person which normally reveals more than it conceals. Here, however, Rachel is so befogged by her addiction and her denial that she sees life and her history differently at different parts of the novel. First person POV, when done well, is good for creating intimacy with the reader and getting the reader to side with the protagonist, which is why Rachel initially seems "just misunderstood" by those surrounding her. But as the layers of Rachel's onions are peeled away during her Cloisters stay, incidents take on new shades of meaning, and Rachel herself becomes quite multi-dimensional. There is one scene with her parents that manages to dig a well of character depth in just a few short pages and makes you ache for Rachel and understand her in a completely new way.
The drug addiction and recovery process is examined fully, but not in textbook fashion. All of the information Keyes imparts flows naturally from the narrative, never seeming false, but illuminating addiction and the addictive personality with a bright beam. This is what I found fascinating to read this time around - how all of these diverse people Rachel meets have the same problems with addiction and all of the same attendant deviant behaviors. Unlike lots of stories about addiction, however, this one ends hopefully, with the understanding that recovery is ongoing and a great deal of work, but possible.
Rachel's romance with her boyfriend Luke is told mainly in flashback and is a significant portion of the novel, not so much because the romance is crucial but because the way Rachel interacted with Luke illuminates how much of a problem she truly had with drugs and alcohol and self-esteem. Luke himself is pretty wonderful, very scrumptious, and provides most of the lighter touches the novel needs to keep it from being bogged down with weighty issues.
All in all this is a wonderful novel about addiction and the long process of recovery, full of dark (occasionally raunchy) humor and some nice tender romantic parts. Two thumbs up from me.
Rachel Walsh, the middle sister.......2007-03-26
This is only the second book I've read by Marian Keyes but like "Anybody out there?" it manages to be funny while handling a very serious topic.
Rachel finds her life turned upside-down when her sister, Margaret, arrives in NYC and takes her home to Ireland. Her parents along with her sister, Helen, take her on to a rehabilitation home. Rachels knows she is not an addict, and only agrees to go because she wants to meet the celebrities that take their vacations at the "spa".
Ms. Keyes writes with a great deal of feeling and empathy. I recommend this book highly!

Practical Satire!.......2003-09-25
Airplane Yoga will make you laugh, if not meditate in front of your meal tray. The humor is subtle, but the book manages to walk the line between practicality and satire. It's smart. It's ironic. It's hip. If you don't read it on the plane, it will no doubt have a place on your coffee table, bathroom, or in a Christmas stocking. It's designed in the style of an airplane emergency safety card, but rather than putting on oxygen masks, passengers are doing yoga in the aisle of the plane.

Not very useful.......2006-01-04
If you need a guidebook that will help you plan an itinerary, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! This book, while chock-full of information, gives no practical tips whatsoever about how to arrange activities while touring. I read through it twice and came away with snippets of information but nothing that helped with actually planning how my family would spend each of our four days in the city. The index is incomplete and much of the information is sketchy at best. I would NOT recommend this as a resource, especially for first-time visitors.
Unofficially, it's inconsistent.......2005-12-17
Who wouldn't like to get the unofficial word on a big complex city? Who wouldn't like to feel that they were going to be able to find the places that make a city memorable, and that they weren't going to stick out as easy pickings while doing so?
These guide books promise, essentially, that you will know what you are doing before you've actually had the experience, removing some of the nasty anxiety of going horribly wrong as you set out to find urban magic. Some of their features are excellent. The hotel section, for instance, is comprehensive and gives several ways of looking for a hotel that might match your needs. Neighborhood overviews are also very fine.
HOWEVER! other aspects are both annoying and silly. Addresses are often wrong; hours of operation ditto; information about public transporation is (to be charitable) out-of-date. Nothing quite beats hopping confidently onto a bus with a pocket full of dollar bills, only to discover that busses only accept tokens or quarters.
They don't do badly at explaining what attitude you need to take to manage in New York, but neither do they do well. They hint, for example, at the importance of tipping, but do not convey the underlying fact that tipping in NYC is essentially small-time protection money. Not that that's a bad thing. Similarly, restaurant coverage was unimaginative, but maybe there is no way to predict whether a tourist would prefer a very very safe and bland experience, or is more adventurous and would prefer places where the locals eat. Even then, which locals?
This book helped us find a hotel that pleased us. Still, the other aspects annoyed us sufficiently that we left it behind in JFK before we took off.
This book is like Consumer Report for the Big Apple........2003-08-15
On a recent business trip, this guide offered everything I needed-- a cheap place to stay, some great places to eat, great rates on all the top attractions, and even Broadway shows without paying full price.

Book Description
Three-time Caldecott Honor artist Jerry Pinkney brings new relevance to the classic Hans Christian Andersen story
The wintry streets of an American city are thronged with shoppers, in preparation for New Year's Eve. But no one is interested in buying the matches and artificial flowers offered by one little girl. Wishing to avoid the cold welcome awaiting her at home, she lights her matches for what little heat they can provide. The visions that she sees in their flickering glow warm her spirit, even as the brutal cold of night destroys her body.
Three-time Caldecott Honor winner Jerry Pinkney's interpretation of this famous Hans Christian Andersen tale transforms the little Danish girl into a child drawn straight out of the American melting pot--a child who is of no easily identifiable culture, and so is of them all. The poignancy and immediacy of Pinkney's art draw the reader into the early twentieth-century streets, to witness how the poor can be invisible in the midst of the wealthy--a condition Andersen would instantly recognize.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful keepsake for young and old.......2007-06-27
Fall in love with this timeless Hans Christian Anderson story all over again. I was originally searching for an old record of this story that included a book from the 1960's. Unable to find the storybook and record set I wanted, I came across this book. The illustrations are beautiful. The book makes a wonderful gift for someone you love or for yourself.
And a little child shall lead us..........2007-04-06
This simple little story is an old one that I first heard many years ago. The youngster in this book is saddled with several obstacles. Child labor laws are yet to come about - her father sends her out into the world to work. The family deals with poverty and hunger. Improperly clothed, the little girl is sure to succomb to frostbite. She knows that her father will surely abuse her if she comes home empty-handed. With no way out, this youngster turns to her own rich inner life to help her transcend her impossible situation. This is the story of the power of love - the love of her own late grandmother - that sustains her as she slips into her own death. It is a lasting parable about looking within to find the resources that sustain us.
The Little Match Girl.......2007-01-15
This fairy tale is a favorite from my childhood. It is a classic story of a little girl who is alone, poor, cold, hungry and afraid to return home becasue she has sold no matches. As she is freezing to death, she lights the matches to keep warm. As she lights them, she sees all the lovely scenes of life that she has missed...Finally she sees her loving grandmother who takes her to Heaven. The story's deeper meaning is that there are things worse than death, and with the little girl's death, she is no longer hungry, cold and unloved.
Everyone should read this book........2006-10-15
I know that for those who have read this book have found it be disturbing for little children. Honestly, I don't think Hans C. Anderson would have intended this book to be just for adults. I believe he had a heart felt message for all ages. Also, the fact that it introduces real life and after life for a child is very good. Plus, it can also teach a child many other lessons. I am definitely going to read this to my kids. When I first read the little match girl I was not expecting the ending at all. So when the ending did come I cried. It affected me so much. The heart wrenching story of this little girl really hits you hard. Please read this book.

"The Little Match Girl ".......2005-10-09
"The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christen Andersen was the first book I read as a child that affected me profoundly. I was able to make a personal connection to the text because I too was a young girl who was impoverished at the time. I knew what it felt like to be cold and hungry and I related immediately to the main character.
I came away from reading this book with empathy, sympathy, and knowing the truth: Not everyone has been blessed with having their basic needs met. In addition, I experienced a great joy when her grandmother takes her up to heaven to a better comforting place.
I came away with the concept that death was not something to be feared or a bad thing, but something that might be comforting and
positive. I have always loved this book. Because even as a child who was struggling I too had many things to be thankful for in comparison to what the little match girl had. The underlying message is powerful and real.

Customer Reviews:
An EXCELLENT Book!.......2007-04-01
This is Chinese New Year as I know it. This book is 15 years old, so I was prepared to find it dated in both art and flow. Instead I found myself utterly drawn in, instantly comfortable with the way the people and their home and environments were rendered. Clothing and hair styles, home furnishings, food drawings--everything is spot on, plus, there's this education flavor to the drawings that makes me nostalgic for . . . my old Saturday morning Chinese school books? The text works great for me, too. The device of sharing so much information about usual Chinese New Year traditions via the opener "Just like any other year . . ." on every page, while we wait to hear what was different about THIS year, really drew me in.
The moment of dragon-riding fantasy is breathtaking.
So why am I giving this only 4 stars instead of 5? Well, it's crazy, but as much as I love this book and am getting it for myself, I'm still not sure this would be the first Chinese New Year book I'd give my FRIENDS' kids, these days, and that's my test for what gets 5 stars. I'm almost suspicious this book is TOO perfect for me, and that my friends' kids (the ones being born now) wouldn't relate the same way.
I could be wrong. I'm going to show it around and see what others think. I could just be in denial my friends and I have become our parents.
This book is wonderful.
But my 6 y.o. daughter likes it.......2003-02-03
She took it to bed to read to herself the other night. If you were doing Ch. New Year with a KG - 5th class, you could use the book, but only read selected paragraphs All the important bits of the celebration are there.
good general information for kids.......2002-02-15
This book contained very good general information for kids about Chinese New Year; however, it was written in a very choppy style and the ideas also did not flow from one to the next. Within the general information about the young girl's preparation and celebration was a brief one to two page story about flying on a dragon and seeing Chinese New Year in ancient times. This story was too short and really didn't say anything about how the celebrations might have differed; however, connecting current celebrations to ancient times was a nice idea. ...

Hilarious.......2007-03-26
Clever, witty and so "laugh out loud" it isn't funny. Her best book yet. There's particular humour in Rachel's self-deprecation and also in her relationships with the members of her quirky family.
A book for every girlfriend.......2004-07-28
This book has been purchased and given away to 12 different friends. I recommend it to anyone that has seen the addictive personality up close and have had addiction professionals use it as a fun guide to recovery. I love all of Marion Keyes books, but this one and Last Chance Saloon are my favorite rereads. I haunt the bookstores waiting for every new book to hit the shelves and share my joy with my reading girlfriends. Thanks for the joy!
The most amazing book !!!.......2004-07-19
I am a great fan of Ms.Keyes, shamefully admitting to paying extraordinary amounts of money to get my hands on some of her more obscure books, published in UK and Ireland (now available to us in Canada as well - such as life...). Rachel's Holiday is my absolute favorite book of hers, so fabulosly and skillfully writen that you live through every one of the agony of the character as if is your own, while laughing at it and thinking how much better life is when not taken so seriously. I read that book at least 4 times, and it's always by my bed - if I feel particularly depressed in the morning, that's my choice of read to get me out of the bed. I hope for many more like that from Ms. Keyes.
A MUST READ !!!!!!!!!!!
Entertaining.......2003-12-04
This book had me laughing and crying. It's a great story, well written, very funny and very sad at the same time.
I liked Lucy Sullivan better, but another score for Keyes with this book. If you like brittish authors and brittish humour, you'll like this one!
A really good read.......2003-10-12
I'm a huge fan of this book. It's my favorite of all the Keyes books. It's funny, serious, and heart warming. READ THIS BOOK!

Book Description
How many times have you arrived in a foreign country, faced with the unknown, backpack in tow, and thought, "What the heck am I doing here?" Author Rachel Franco asked herself that very question when she left her Canadian prairie hometown and arrived in the urban jungle of Bogotá, Colombia, where she lived for six months. She asked herself the same question when she traveled by bus across the southern United States en route to California's Orange County, journaling her experiences all the while. Become absorbed in the first-hand adventures of life in a foreign culture. Discover the simplicity of fascination that makes you an intrepid explorer in your every day life and experience the pitfalls and joy that go hand-in-hand with being a traveler, savoring all of the stops along the way.
