Book Description

Jeff Winston, forty-three, didn't know he was a replayer until he died and woke up twenty-five years younger in his college dorm room; he lived another life. And died again. And lived again and died again -- in a continuous twenty-five-year cycle -- each time starting from scratch at the age of eighteen to reclaim lost loves, remedy past mistakes, or make a fortune in the stock market. A novel of gripping adventure, romance, and fascinating speculation on the nature of time, Replay asks the question: "What if you could live your life over again?"

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Get Lost In--Time Travel.......2007-09-23

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews.

Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks.

Replay: What a wonderful concept! A man dies and wakes up in his old college town. He's young again, but he remembers everything from his old life. And, of course, he gets rich easily, knowing what is going to happen.

He lives this second life, then dies and is reborn again. Finally he meets a women who is also a re-liver. The subject is fascinating, and the novel moves right along.

Highly recommended. I loved this story.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Misunderstood.......2007-09-08

First, I'd like to say that a friend bought this book for me a couple of months ago, but I was slow to read it because our taste in books does not always dovetail. However, I picked it up on a sleepless night, found it fascinating, powerful, resonating.

I won't rehash the plot, others posting here have done an admirable job. However, there has been a lot of comparison between Replay by Ken Grimwood and the movie Groundhog Day (and other, newer movie/tv/book plots). We're all entitled to our opinions. For those who enjoyed Replay, hurrah! For those who didn't enjoy it, didn't get it, no harm, we can't all have the same tastes. But for those who couldn't or wouldn't enjoy it because they found Groundhog day more fun or comic or less dark - or found Replay less satisfying than the Bill Murray movie because the ending wasn't what they would have liked - I am saddened those readers missed the point of the book because they were so busy totting up a mental scorecard. I doubt Grimwood created Replay for the purpose of measuring it against any other story, past or future, but for his own need to answer that age-old question: If you could live your life again, what would you do? Groundhog Day is an enjoyable premise - if limited - about a protagonist who repeats the same day until he creates the "perfect" day - but it left me wondering - perfection in whose philosophy? Certainly perfection based on a very narrow bandwidth of criteria. Don't misunderstand; Groundhog Day is hugely entertaining, but these are two different stories that deserve to be reviewed on their own merits.

Replay is not concerned with perfection. It deals with a flawed human - Jeff Winston - who is given the opportunity to play out his life many different ways. In each life his character is flawed and human; it's not what he achieves but the journeys that are so compelling. Is he a boring character? Generally, yes, but aren't we all? Do we all live our lives with a view to entertaining others 24/7, as if someone were reading our life story and judging our most minute actions? He is who he is, not who the reader wants him to be.

Other reviewers have maligned the character because essentially he is not a person of destiny - he doesn't satisfy the sci-fi genre mythos of the becoming of a hero - like Luke Skywalker, an ordinary farmboy, becoming a savior of a Republic. But, after all, most people of destiny do not start their lives with their final, future achievements firmly etched in their minds. Why, then, read a book about a protagonist who is not a hero? The relative mediocrity of Jeff's lives is what makes Replay so fascinating - each life left me with a desire to see what he would do next time, to wonder: Is this the life where he will be larger-than-life? Or, will he stumble, make fatal mistakes this time? He's an ordinary person, muddling his way thru again and again. His foreknowledge gives him an advantage in some ways, but also stunts him in other ways.

To class Replay as a sci-fi novel is oversimplification, does not acknowledge it's place as literature. I find one characteristic of literature is that it serves as a springboard for more in-depth learning or the breaking of misconceptions. The famous quote in Replay "You and I, Arjuna, have lived many lives. I remember them all. You do not remember" is from the Bhagavad Gita, or "Song of God." Replay - along with other books such as The Legend of Bagger Vance - has sparked my interest in that religious and philosophical tome, and I've started reading it. I don't expect enlightenment, just maybe a different, evolving view.

Replay has joined other thought-provoking novels on my bookshelf, hopefully to be re-read and enjoyed many times.

4 out of 5 stars Page turner, but could have went much deeper.......2007-09-01

I was expecting something better based on the reviews. So much of a rating of anything has to do with expectations. I started reading the book and was wondering if the story was going to get any 'bigger' than just circling around his life. For me- in the end it fell a bit stale. Not bad, not great. That stated, I did read it through in one sitting staying up all night to read it. SO, it did keep me interested. It seemed like the story was getting global but then not much came of things. This is about 90% romance novel and 10% time travel so don't think it's a sci fi book.

It's a study of one man's rather mundane existence being able to repeat his adult life over several times retaining the memories from the previous life.

So, what does one do with their adult life when the get multiple lives? It turns out- not very much! Think of the awesome possibilities. You can use your knowledge for good or evil trying to effect all of mankind.

Does he try to pull political strings with the massive wealth he accumulates? Make power plays in various countries? Stop all the horrible accidents that will happen? Alert people to the worst natural disasters? Nope. He doesn't do any of that.

It would have been very cool if there were other replayers and some were good, some were more evil and they played each life like a game of chess steering the word events with their knowledge. This isn't that book.

It concentrates mostly on his emotions and relations with women with some side roads into more interesting territory involving world events.

This is a love story wrapped in time travel wrapping paper. I did stay up all night to read it though as Ken knew how to keep things flowing.

2 out of 5 stars Too gritty.......2007-08-24

This book has an exciting premise, but I felt like I was slogging through too much muck. It is very gritty with superfluous swearing. It doesn't add to the story and it drags one down. Not an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Time Travel Novel.......2007-08-04

What would you do if you got a second or a third chance to do it over? Ken Grimwood handles that question in a novel way that left me wondering what I would have done and if there are any replayers out there.

This book is fun yet it gives the reader things to think about. There are no cheap solutions. Boy meets girl doesn't alway happen.

This is an intertaining read and I strongly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "A life steeped in uncertainty.".......2007-10-07

Jeff Bell uses the metaphor of a tape player to describe his struggle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in his harrowing memoir, "Rewind, Replay, Repeat." Bell has been a successful radio personality for many years, which makes his willingness to come clean about his illness all the more remarkable. He is a doubter, who states, "I have all five of my senses, but tend not to trust any of them." Because he does not believe what he perceives, Bell mentally replays entire sequences of his life over and over again. He also revisits places to check that he has not harmed anyone or failed to do something essential. He calls his story "a tale of fear and torment and agony and shame."

After experiencing a few OCD symptoms as a child, Bell enjoys a normal adolescence, goes on to college, earns an MBA, marries his college sweetheart, and starts a career in commercial radio. He and his wife, Samantha, have a little girl, Nicole. Everything is going wonderfully. Unfortunately, the peace of mind that he enjoyed for so many years is shattered when his OCD returns with a vengeance. He begins to obsess about a near-collision that occurs while he is piloting his father's boat. He spends hours worrying about some minor damage that he may have inflicted on someone else's cabin cruiser. Not only does he think about this event constantly, but he also visits the marina over and over to look for physical clues. This fixation on an unimportant incident takes over his life to such an extent that it begins to affect his marriage and his ability to concentrate at work. He stays up all night worrying, and his sleeplessness makes him groggy during the day. Rather than owning up to his condition, Bell makes a valiant effort to hide the truth from his colleagues, friends, and loved ones. He is living a double life and it is destroying him emotionally.

Even after he reluctantly shares his secret with his family and agrees to seek help, the first therapist that Bell consults has no useful answers for him. Although his devoted wife is steadfast in her support of her beleaguered husband, she finds his behavior increasingly unsettling. After sixteen months of "pent-up rage," Bell curls up on the bathroom floor of his house and bawls like a baby. He is deteriorating and he has no idea what to do to make things better.

"Rewind, Replay, Repeat" illuminates the agonizing world of doubters and checkers--those unfortunate souls who cannot leave well enough alone. OCD sufferers include: the woman who must unlock her front door repeatedly to check the stove; the driver who feels compelled to circle the block to make sure that he didn't run over a pedestrian; the terrified child who keeps asking his mother the same question a thousand times and is never satisfied with the answer; the washers who scrub their hands dozens of times a day until their skin is raw and painful; and the savers who hoard objects of no value until their homes resemble garbage dumps. Medical science has yet to pinpoint exactly what causes the brains of OCD patients to misfire.

This is an intensely personal, painfully honest, and extremely detailed look at one man's journey into the abyss and back. After he learns that he has OCD, an incurable condition, Bell struggles for years to get his life under control with a combination of spiritual awakening, a support group, cognitive behavioral therapy, and drug treatment. "Rewind, Replay, Repeat" is an informative, touching, and vividly written first-person account that will give hope and comfort to OCD sufferers and their families. It is a welcome addition to other excellent non-fiction works on this subject that include the classic "The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing" by Judith Rappaport and "Brain Lock" by Jeffrey Schwartz.

5 out of 5 stars See elements of yourself within the pages.......2007-09-24

I originally picked this gem up thinking it would be interesting to read from a psychological point of view. Once I started into it, though, I began to recognize certain elements of my own behavior. Though I would not say I am a full-blown OC, I do sometimes have obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors (probably as most people do at some time in their life). Just the title and him referring to the tapes that keep replaying in his brain was enough for me to squash my own destructive thoughts. Whenever I start wasting time on obsessive thoughts, I just think of his analogy of the tapes that keep playing, then rewinding and replaying. I then choose to shut the tape player off. Very freeing! A courageous and interesting story. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Bell.!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read by SF Radio Personaltiy.......2007-09-20

Fascinating look into the world of OCD -- spelled out in an informative, entertaining fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! Please Read this Book!.......2007-08-08

I cannot recommend this account of a person's journey into the terrors of OCD highly enough. I suffer from OCD and read as much as I can on this topic, and this is the best personal story I have ever encountered on this subject. Without whining or blaming, the author carefully and honestly shares his torture. With a reporter's skills, he has us on the scene with him, feeling his agony and rooting for his recovery. A close friend who does not have OCD and borrowed my book was equally in awe of the author as she read of his struggle and his eventual recovery. I would recommend this book to family and friends of OCD sufferers as Jeff shares what his wife, children and parents went through during the height of his disorder. Professionals who treat OCD sufferers will benefit from it as well. It will be a real eye opener into our world. You will not be disappointed in this heartfelt, amusing, and heartbreaking story. This is a book I found extemely hard to put down. Please read this book.

5 out of 5 stars true to life.......2007-08-08

This book brought me to tears. It so reminded me of my daughter's struggle with anxiety disorders. One thing that all people need to be reminded of is, Jeff, nor anyone with anxiety disorders, is ever cured. It is not overcome. It is coped with - sometimes better than other times. Your life and those around you are still affected by the disorder. You still have symptoms but are better able to not let them control you. This takes energy. If someone you know has anxiety disorders, remember this.

Book Description

In 1967, when Jerry Kramer was a thirty-one-year-old Green Bay Packers offensive lineman, in his tenth year with the team, he decided to keep a diary of the season. “Perhaps, by setting down my daily thoughts and observations,” he wrote, “I’ll be able to understand precisely what it is that draws me back to professional football.” Working with the renowned journalist Dick Schaap, Kramer recorded his day-to-day experiences as a player with perception, honesty, humor, and startling sensitivity. Little did Kramer know that the 1967 season would be one of the most remarkable in the history of pro football, culminating with the legendary championship game against Dallas now known as the “Ice Bowl,” in which Kramer would play a central role. Nor could he have anticipated that his diary would evolve into a book titled Instant Replay, first published in 1968, that would become a multimillion-copy bestseller and be celebrated by reviewers everywhere, including the Washington Post’s Jonathan Yardley, who calls it “to this day, the best inside account of pro football, indeed the best book ever written about that sport and that league.”

This groundbreaking look inside the world of professional football is one of the first books ever to take readers into the locker room and reveal the inner workings of a professional sports franchise. From training camp, through the historic Ice Bowl, then into the locker room of Super Bowl II, Kramer provides a captivating player’s perspective on pro football when the game was all blood, grit, and tears. He also offers a rare and insightful view of the team’s storied leader, Coach Vince Lombardi.

Bringing the book back into print for the first time in more than a decade, this new edition of Instant Replay retains the classic look of the original and includes a foreword by Jonathan Yardley and additional rarely seen photos from the celebrated “Lombardi era.” As vivid and engaging as it was when it was first published, Instant Replay is an irreplaceable reminder of the glory days of pro football.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic.......2007-07-18

I read this book twice: once when I was a kid shortly after it was initially released, and again several years ago. It was just as interesting a read the second time as it was the first. I recently bought a copy of this re-released version for a friend. I thumbed through it and noticed some additional photo's have been added since the release of the paperback edition that I own.
Anyone who has an interest in football will want to read this book, despite the fact that it relates to events that took place 30 years ago. If you're my age, it will bring back memories of the glory days of the Packers (back when a water bucket was a tin pail with a ladle on the sidelines). If you aren't old enough to remember those days, the names in the book will most likely be familiar to you as great characters in football history.

5 out of 5 stars One of the NFL's best teams in their greatest season.......2007-06-19

I am not a Packers fan, yet I found this book fascinating. Jerry Kramer has opened up the mystique of America's favorite spectator sport to the public in "Instant Replay." And what a cast of characters! So many legendary figures of the game participated in this single season: Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, and Ray Nitschke, to name a few. After the fabled "ice bowl" league championship game against the Cowboys, the Super Bowl vs the Raiders was almost anticlimactic. Football fans of any age would truly enjoy this personal account of a remarkable team in their most memorable season.

5 out of 5 stars A Football Classic.......2007-05-07

Instant Replay is an essential book for every football fan. The tradition of the NFL and the inside story of the Green Bay Packers in the Vince Lombardi era come to life with a wonderful blend of humor and pro football detail in this great book.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness.......2006-12-18

There will never be another great team like the Packers of the 1960's for a number of reasons. The only way to relive this era is through the numerous books that rehash the Lombardi dynasty. This book has to be one of the cornerstones of reliving that era with its candid yet humble prose giving an inside view of the Packer locker room. Jerry Kramer, who resents the 'dumb jock' stereotype of football player, composed a well written memior of football in "Instant Replay".

From the days after Superbowl I to Lombardi's retirement after Superbowl II, this book takes readers through the entire 1967 season. Lombardi is known for the grind players were made to endure in his training camps. Kramer tells what the players are feeling as speculation begins that this would be Lombardi's final season coaching in Green Bay. Being the number one target of the NFL after being champion for the last two years makes the regular season a grind. While the Packers did not play their best in the regular season, they turn their game up a notch in the playoffs. Often voted the greatest game in NFL history, Kramer devotes significant time to the Ice Bowl. This is significant because Kramer had a key role in the game and this book marks an early admission that he may have moved a little prematurely. After the Ice Bowl, the Superbowl almost seemed anticlimactic.

Two years after the 1967 season, Vince Lombardi died of cancer and many of the pieces of the Packer dynasty were in retirement. This book is a great way to relive the magic of the Packer dynasty.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Packerland, 1967.......2006-11-23

I read this book when it first came out, ca. 1968, when I was a high school senior in Racine, Wisconsin. I had been a fanatic Packer backer throughout the glorious early and middle 60s, but by 1968, Lombardi was no longer the coach, only the GM (and besides, I was now interested in other things). He would move on to the Redskins for the 1969 season before dying of cancer in the fall of 1970, so INSTANT REPLAY captures the end of an era, his last hurrah as coach in Green Bay.

As with another reviewer below, the Packers of the 60s have marked my life, especially Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, and their leader, the great Coach, and I have always viewed INSTANT REPLAY as the period or exclamation point on my early infatuation with them.

Besides its subject matter, INSTANT REPLAY possesses its own literary merit. Kramer is clearly highly intelligent, and since intelligence is not stereotypically associated with the brute violence of the NFL, it's interesting to read his reflections on life in general and life in football, not to mention the ways he perfected his blocking skills. He talks about how his helmet was his best weapon in warding off defensive linemen--which certainly must have done something to his braincells and neck muscles. I also love the running joke about Lombardi's almost-weekly proclamation: "Gentlemen, this is the start of the big push!" as he exhorted the Packers to still-greater efforts in a long painful slog of a season. There's also an interesting description of how the Packers' veteran blockers made a rookie look slow--the vets had played together for so long they anticipated the snap, while the inexperienced new guy waited for it, losing a fraction of a second in the process.

And there's a mystery. With third and goal and 16 seconds left in the Ice Bowl, the famous sub-zero championship against the Dallas Cowboys, Kramer states flatly that Starr told the huddle, "31 wedge, and I'll carry the ball." This contradicts the more widely-accepted version, that Starr kept the QB sneak a secret, so everyone thought he would hand off to the fullback. What really happened? I would love to hear Kramer's side of this story.

INSTANT REPLAY is a wise reflection on NFL football and its greatest coach at a time when the sport was on the verge of making the transition to the overhyped, fabulously-profitable carnival it is today. For several years after it was published, it was the best-selling sports book of all time. Rereading it, it's easy to see why.

Sharon Creech explores the hopes and longings of an introspective middle child from a boisterous Italian clan in this humorous, character-driven novel. Leo's family calls him "Sardine" because the quiet twelve year old often finds himself sandwiched between his more outgoing siblings. One rainy day in the attic, he discovers his father's teenage journal. In it, he reads that his careworn parent used to dream of being a dancer, a writer, a famous athlete, just like Leo! He also discovers a photo of his father's family that includes an unfamiliar girl in the background. Could it be the mysterious Aunt Rosaria no one speaks of? As he tries to untangle this family mystery, he is also preparing for his school play--a tale of an old man whose life is revived by weaving his childhood memories into stories for his neighbors. How can Leo convince his father that, like the old man in the play, he needs to talk about Rosaria to heal the hole she left in his life? Through the parallel dramas of the play and his chaotic home life, Leo begins to understand the importance of stories and our need to share them, whether they are treasured memories or future dreams. Creech includes the full text of the play, Rumpopo's Porch, in the back of the book. Middle grade fans of Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park or The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going are sure to enjoy this heartfelt, thoughtful read. --Jennifer Hubert

That's why they call Leo "fog boy." He's always dreaming, always replaying things in his brain. He fantasizes about who he is in order to discover who he will become. As an actor in the school play, he is poised and ready for the curtain to open. But in the play that is his life, Leo is eager to discover what part will be his.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Humorous and Touching.......2007-07-04

Sharon Creech is a master at young adult literature. This book had humor, emotion, and was an accurate depiction of families. It was also very touching. I really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Tapshoes and an Autobiography.......2007-05-30

Sharon Creech has written this excellent book and I highly suggest reading it. I would recommend this book for people ages 8 to12. The main character, Leonardo, is easy to relate to. He is a big dreamer, which got him the name "Fog Boy". He has another nickname "Sardine". He got that one because he is one of four kids and he felt like he was squished and small.
One rainy day, Leo decides to go up to the attic to explore. While he is up there he finds a pair of his papa's tap shoes and an autobiography of his papa when he was 13. Leo reads the autobiography a lot and finds that it mentions a sister of Papa's whom Leo has never heard of, Rosaria. Leo tries hard to find out about Rosaria, but he feels that he cannot ask his papa because his papa got mad at him when he caught him searching through his stuff in the attic.
I like this book because of the great descriptions of Leo's papa's autobiography and you can really put yourself in the characters' place during the play that Leo is in, Rumpopo's Porch. Another reason I like this book is because Leo is in a play and Sharon Creech puts the full play in the back of the book. Sharon Creech has also written Walk Two Moons, Absoulutely Normal Chaos, Pleasing the Ghost, Chasing Redbird, The Wanderer, Love That Dog, Heartbeat, and more.
Replay is a fiction book. It is very original and is easy to enjoy because you can relate to at least one of the characters.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for dreamers of all ages........2007-03-11

Maybe it's because I've always been drawn to acting. Maybe it's because I've always been a (day)dreamer myself. Maybe it's because I have always struggled to connect with my family. Maybe it's simply the amazing power of Creech's writing. Whatever the reasons, Leo has become a character I will never forget.

Sharon Creech's "Replay" tells the story of the day-dreaming Leo, though he is better known to family and friends as "Sardine" or "Fog-Boy" -- both nicknames that Leo hopes to leave behind at some point in his life -- in a coming-of-age story that will ring true to any middle child in the chaos of a large family that is always on the go. How do you deal with being cast as the "Old Crone" in the school play? How do you grow up in a family that never seems to know you're there? How do you connect to a father you don't understand? Especially when you find the autobiography he wrote at age 13 and learn about all those passions he once had that now seem to have faded.

As a middle school teacher, I have shared this book with my class. In watching my students as we read it together, I have watched my students laugh at Leo's daydreams, commiserate with his failures, and share in his joys. Most importantly of all, however, is that as Leo learns to look at his father with new eyes, so too have I seen my students begin to look at their parents in ways they never have before.

In the end, not all of Leo's dreams have come true, but he succeeds in taking one step further in the process of growing up, and does so in an authentic way that will resound to anyone who struggles, or who struggled, with that greatest of tasks in life: Becoming who you are.

5 out of 5 stars It's Wonderful!.......2006-09-11

No one could ever hate Sharon Creech's books. They're the best in the world!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best..........2006-08-16

The main thing I didn't like was the sentences. Mostly every sentence was 'Leo said', 'Leo did', basicaly, it was choppy at best.
Second, I hated the 'daydream' part. It was... well, kind of stupid.
Third, the worst part of this book was the part where everyone broke or dislocated someone, that was stupider than the daydream sequences.
Last but not least, this actually had some interesting things in it. I liked the autobiography of his dad, and the Rosaria mystery actually made me want to find out what happened.
Overall, it's okay, but not the best.

Book Description

Replays addresses the challenging behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorders through interactive symbolic play. It shows parents and professionals how to help children access their emotions, whether the child is verbal or not, cognitively able or impaired, even-tempered or volatile. The chapters introduce and show readers how to implement Replays, and describe ways of adapting this intervention to address specific issues in different settings and circumstances.

Levine and Chedd present more than just behavioral management strategies in the context of social, emotional and communication development: they have developed a technique that helps children to re-experience, play through and master the complex emotional response states that often lead to ongoing behavioral challenges.

Replays is an easy and fun tool that provides numerous step-by-step examples and illustrations. It enables parents and professionals to guide children with autism spectrum disorders towards mastering, and changing, their emotional and behavioral responses.

5 out of 5 stars Systematic Desensitization Meets Pretending.......2006-12-28

I'm a fan of any book that opens with a quote from Jerry of Ben and Jerry's ("If it's not fun, why do it?"). I'll officially say he's my second favorite hippie-Jerry.

This is a nice guide to a specific technique of play therapy for enhancing emotional and behavioral development for children on the PDD spectrum. The idea is to use repetitive play as a symbolic reenactment of events associated with intense emotional and behavioral reactions. This is not a new idea, but Drs. Levine and Chedd describe a specific approach in which variation is gradually introduced into the repetitive play, the individual changes too subtle to be easily noticed but ultimately introducing some flexibility into the behavioral repertoire. Not unlike the slow movements of a Philip Glass symphony. The Replays approach combines aspects of traditional play therapy as well as elements of CBT, and borrows from other intervention approaches as well. I can't do it justice here, but this Levine and Chedd's text is actually a concise, quick read, with lots of examples to help illustrate how it actually works. There are also some chapters on tailoring the technique for specific problems and specific situations as well as suggestions for adapting the technique to different settings such as sibling groups or classrooms. Thumbs up, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in autism spectrum disorders, works with this population of children, and to parents of children who might benefit from these techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first-person account of the NFL.......2006-05-28

This first-person account of the champion Green Bay Packers of the 1960's is well worth reading. Jerry Kramer was an offensive lineman whose toughness and insights spice this diary/narrative. From his non-glamour position Kramer give readers a sense of the daily struggles and determined efforts required in the highly competitive National Football League (NFL). Of course, it helped that Green Bay had many star players like Bart Starr and Ray Nitschke, a superb if egotistical coach in Vince Lombardi, plus a City and State that has embraced this team for decades. This is a solid and readable narrative, one that gives us a feel of what it's like being a member of an NFL squad.

Instant Replay
The Green Bay Diary of Jerry Kramer

The book I read was Instant Replay; The Green Bay Diary of Jerry Kramer. It is the day by day account of the day in the life of a professional football player. It is a must read for anyone for likes football, or sports in general. It's an incredible inside few of what goes on in the National Football league.
The story starts off in the pre-season, or the time before the season starts. The first journal entry is a conversation between Jerry Kramer and his hall of fame coach, Vince Lombardi. He is considered the greatest football coach of all time, and after reading this book, I know why. The very first sentence that comes out of Lombardi's mouth is full of wisdom and calm demeanor as he explains that one of Jerry's best friends on the team has been traded. It was really fascinating to read about Lombardi as a person and as a great coach.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports. What goes on during games and in the locker room in this book are sometimes very funny and always interesting. Jerry Kramer was a great player, and a pretty good writer too.

5 out of 5 stars When Pro Football Was Really Football.......2002-05-29

This is a book about the game of football when it was REALLY football, and when the players were genuinely tough guys who poured their hearts into the game... and not the candy-derriere prima donnas on the pro teams today (except for the Dallas Cowboys). Vince Lombardi worked these guys, built and molded them, inspired them to be one of the best teams of any sort in history. It so happened their medium was football, but I think their determination and Lombardi's leadership could have driven this particular Green Bay Packer group to accomplish anything they set out to do. Kramer's story is a fantastic look into the gritty gridiron world of yesteryear, before all the promotional opportunities and player greed converted professional football from a knock-heads team sport into something more akin to professional wrestling.

Buy it today. It's a great story you won't be able to put down.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any football fan!.......2001-10-02

As a fan of the Packers, or sports in general, Instant Replay is a must-read for the sports enthusiast. Stirring and funny, Jerry Kramer weaves his way through life with Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers. One only hopes they reprint this for future generations. Don't overlook it's companion, Distant Replay, which picks up where Instant Replay leaves off, 20 years later. These should be a staple in the sports reader's library.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Pro Football I've Ever Read!.......1999-04-24

This is a fascinating diary of a year in the life of a pro football player. And what a year!! Jerry Kramer is an offensive guard who plays for the 1967 Green Bay Packers as they try to become the first NFL team to win three straight championships. Not only is it a great drama (especially if you don't already know the outcome), but it's very interesting to see how the NFL has changed over the past 30 years - and how it's still the same in many ways. It's also a good snapshot of what the average person saw, thought, said and dreamed about in the late 60's, from the perspective not of a flower-child or a politician, but from a regular, honest guy who happened to play pro football for a living before the big salaries and ESPN. I can't recommend this book enough. I didn't want it to ever end.

5 out of 5 stars Can I Rate It Six Stars?.......2006-08-30

It seemed a natural for former all-pro offensive lineman Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap to again chronicle the players of the 1960s "Packer Dynasty," but this time nearly 20 years after those glory years.

This is the third book in a series that had Kramer/Schaap pen works on the Super Bowl II championship season and the very rocky year that followed. Distant Replay starts with a basic premise; getting team members from the Super Bowl I championship squad together for a reunion in "Titletown, USA."

As much as it is bringing the reader up to date on what happened to the athletes after they left the stadiums of play, Distant Replay demonstrates how success on the field can be incredible highs that oftentimes cannot be replicated off the gridiron.

The lessons learned are timeless. I found Distant Replay a highly enjoyable read and - even 20 years later - one of my favorite sports books.

For those interested in the trilogy, Kramer recently released a multi-CD set of recordings and interviews from the late 1960s, along with "distant replay" interviews with former players on the championship years.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for any football fan.......2002-04-19

A must read for any football fan. Dick Schaap knows how to bring out the best in ex-jocks. I tore through this book in a few nights. I liked it as much as "Instant Replay".

3 out of 5 stars "Distant Replay" is for the hard-core Jerry Kramer fan only.......1998-07-01

I had been something of a Jerry Kramer fan as a child and I must say that I looked forward to this book with considerable anticipation. After all, I'd really liked "Instant Replay" and was curious to see what had happened to my heroes since they moved on from football. If Kramer had stuck to a review of "where are they now" it would have been a much better read. Unfortunately, he seems quite self-absorbed...This was a disillusioning read for me; it made me look at Kramer's previous works in a much harsher light. [Maybe that's not so bad!]
