"Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas box is told less and needed more. So I record it now for all future generations to accept or dismiss as seems to them good. As for me, I believe." So begins the sentimental tale of romance and family that Richard Paul Evans went to a copy shop and self-published a few years back. Readers decidedly accepted the saga, spending millions of dollars and clamoring for more, so Evans wrote two more heart-rending episodes, Timepiece and The Letter. (The original's megasuccess sparked a TV movie and inspired a parody, Revenge of the Christmas Box.)
At last, all three are collected in one of the most popular holiday-themed tearjerkers since Dickens. Can David Parkin, a hard-working man, learn from a cache of old love letters that there's more to life than work--such as his relationship with his wife, MaryAnne? What becomes of the Parkins' angelic daughter, Andrea? When a bent and bereft old lady is spotted crouching over a snowy grave, and the night watchman tells her the cemetery is closed, what can it mean that she mysteriously disappears, leaving behind one red rose and a letter? Could it have something to do with calamitous family tragedy, with David's mother and the key to healing his hardened heart?
It sure could. Scrooge-like critics did not swoon over Evans's trilogy, but they are quite outnumbered by fans. Evans made millions of readers feel touched, as if by an angel.
Book Description
Richard Paul Evans' #1 New York Times bestseller The Christmas Box has become a holiday classic, a tale so touching that it continues to "tug families' heartstrings" (USA Today). His exquisite prequel, Timepiece, and The Letter completed the glorious trilogy of the Parkin family. Now all three magical stories are compiled in one extraordinary treasury that -reaches into that place where all broken hearts will forever be made whole" (The Star, Chicago).
The Christmas Box
A Christmas story unlike any other, The Christmas Box is the poignant tale of a widow and the young family who moves in with her. Together, they discover the first gift of Christmas -- and what the holiday is really all about.
Timepiece
Tracing the lives of a young couple as they discover love, loyalty, and the power of forgiveness, Timepiece is a tale of wisdom and of hope -- and a gentle reminder that the connections from one generation to the next are indelible.
The Letter
A mysterious letter is found at the grave of a couple's only child in this unforgettable conclusion to the collection. As they face love's greatest challenge, they find its truest meaning and learn the lessons that are echoed throughout.

I had read both the Christmas Box, and Timepeice before but wanted to read the Letter. This was an exceptional value so I bought the set. I loved the letter most of all. If you like Nick Sparks you will love Richard Paul Evans. His other books Looking Glass, and Carosel are great too.

Author Francine Rivers once created her own "God Box" for talking with God. Whenever something was bothering Rivers she would write a prayer about it and slip it in her decorated cardboard box. It was this personal God Box that gave her the idea for writing this compelling Christmas story about a foster child named Timmy whose only valued possession is a shoebox. His foster parents, a young Christian couple, are of course curious about this 6-year-old's mysterious box. What could be inside? But knowing that his privacy is one of the few things Timmy has left, they decide not to pry. Rivers uses the backdrop of Timmy's foster family, church community, and the dedication of his birth mother to illustrate what Christian faith can do. The Christmas pageant finale is a true heart warmer for all believers.
Book Description
In this beautiful gift book, Francine Rivers tells a poignant Christmas story about a foster child, Timmy, and his very special shoe box. Includes special notes from the author about the story and her family's Christmas traditions and recipes.

Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-10-10
Great book, even bought more for gifts, teaches children about giving of yourself and about how God works in very difficult circumstances. Beautifully illustrated.
The Shoe Box.......2005-12-28
This is a very charming book. As a result of the book it inspired my family to create shoe boxes to give during the holiday. It was amazing what good it did. Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful.

A Lovely Christmas Book .......2005-12-20
The Shoe Box is a fabulous Christmas book. It is a touching story that is beautifully illustrated. It highlights the importance and beauty of child-like faith. For our family, it will be a must-read book each Christmas for years to come.
Relaxing reading with big impact.......2005-05-15
The Shoe Box is a pleasant and easy read, taking me less than an hour to finish but making a big impact. It is one of the more versatile books in my collection and has become one of my favorites.
The story begins as Timmy, a dear six year old comes to live in a foster home, bringing with him a mysterious box. My heart was warmed as his foster family showed him everyday Christian love and Timmy showed them the true meaning of Christmas.
At the end of the book, after Timmy's story, you will find the biblical account or the Christmas story, from Matthew and Luke, presented in the easy to understand New Living Translation.
In addition to these two beautiful stories there are more treasures. dispersed throughout the book are insights into the author's family traditions and some wonderful recipes.
This is a lovely book that will continue to reside on my bookshelf and serve as a Christmas tradition in my home. This year it will be a special gift item for family and friends.
I recommend The Shoe Box as it is just as valuable for relaxing reading on any quiet afternoon, as it is for family reading on Christmas Eve.
Moving.......2004-03-16
It's short, and for that price maybe a bit expencive too... but it's great! When I read it it was like... "this is not that moving at all" - but the end explained all :) really cute.
My mom thought that this is a perfect book to give as a gift.

It began with The Christmas Box, a humble story about a caretaker and his family who befriend a lonely widow at Christmas time. In The Christmas Box Miracle, author Richard Paul Evans offers the back story, showing us how his self- published book became a runaway bestseller. We first meet the author as a young boy, learning about the family and faith that led him to become such as reliable and unpretentious narrator. As it turns out, Evans grew up in a Mormon household amongst a band of taunting brothers and a few childhood ghosts. His mother lost a stillborn daughter when Evans was a toddler. She also suffered from severe depression and suicidal tendencies. This backdrop helps us understand Evans's dedication to bring healing and hope to life. More than a publishing success story, The Christmas Box Miracle speaks about Evans's ability to change readers' lives and foster miracle after miracle. Fans of Evans already know to pull out their handkerchiefs. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
In 1994, Richard Paul Evans, then an unknown writer, self-published a short book entitled The Christmas Box. That book went on to become an international bestseller, selling more than seven million copies and touching the lives of many more people along the way.
The Christmas Box Miracle is the story behind the book that has become a Christmas classic: how a man writes and publishes a book which helps grieving people to heal and lost souls to find their way home. It is Evans's story: his own spiritual journey and stories of people he encountered along the way -- miraculous stories of healing and divinity that often defy explanation.
In sharing the story behind The Christmas Box, Richard Paul Evans has given us a story of miracles, hope and healing for all seasons.

What?.......2007-07-01
I am a big fan of the Christmas Box books, but when I saw this book I thought UHHHHHH I guess he needs even more money. RPE must have realized that he was a flash in the pan, and was desprate to hang on to his falling fame. This book does have its moments though, but it sounds like a broken record. They were giving this book away.. a free copy with every $10 purchase. I wish RPE would get over himself he's no Charles Dickens!!!
excellent book.......2007-03-20
this book is really eye opening as to faith and where it can lead you if you let it.
Powerful, yet simple message.......2007-01-14
Unfortunately I read this after reading "The Light of Christmas" so I knew most of the story line but it was still worth the read. It is a simple story with a powerful message about the importance of our individual lives and the lives of those who love us. The Christian message of hope in life is prevalent but subtle and doesn't come across as 'preaching' while still delivering its impact.
Buy more than one!.......2005-12-05
I loved this book from the beginning to the end. It is filled with profound thought evoking experiences and letters. I always love "the story behind the story" and that is exactly what this is. I suggest buying more than one because then you will have one to keep and one that you can share with out having to worry about tracking it down later.
This is the BEST book I've ever read........2003-12-24
Even if you haven't read "The Christmas Box," and don't know what it's about you should read "The Christmas Box Miracle!" It's the most inspiring, and moving book I've ever read. I hope you take the opportunity you've been given, and read this awesome book. It will change your life for the better.

3 cheers for a great read!.......2004-11-25
This book is so good and a breath of fresh air. The bad part is having to put it down.
A little Miracle of a book.......2004-11-12
This is a compelling tale of a family's deep love coming painfully apart over the agonizing loss of a beloved child. The surprising magic of redemption will make any reader smile for the rest of the holiday season pondering how such wonders can arise while knowing that they do. Loved the book and will give it liberally to those I cherish.
A gem and a masterpiece of a story.......2004-11-05
I read this book in manuscript form last Jan. and absolutely loved it!!! I read it to my husband in about 90 minutes or so and we both were crying at the end. It makes us realize how VERY important families are and should be. We need stories like this more. I love heartwarming stories like this and the story gives us so much to think about, as we both felt it is so life-affirming. This will make a great Christmas gift for all. We both highly recommend it. We have our own personally autographed copy and I will be spreading the word around for friends and family to buy it for Christmas gifts.
The James Miracle Inspires hope!!!.......2004-10-20
The James Miracle inspires hope and reiterates the power of family.
The James Miracle had me hooked from the first paragraph. The perfect mix of humor and real-life challenges make the characters so real. I was able to directly relate to their feelings, challenges and success stories. The author touches an emotional chord and teaches the reader about the strength of a family and the amazing faith of a child. When I finished the book, I realized that I had experienced a whole range of emotion including laughter, sorrow, and hope. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
A story with moral substance.......2004-10-20
I am very picky about what I read but thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is captivating to a very broad audience because of its relevance. Throughout its humorous, entertaining, yet dramatic story line it reminds us of important truths about family relationships, dealing with life's challenges, and faith. It reminds us of what is most important in life and motivates us to live so we have no regrets. I enjoyed the warm, interesting writing style and definitely recommend reading this small literary masterpiece.

Richard Paul Evans originally wrote The Christmas Box as an expression of love for his two daughters, never intending for it to be published. Many Christmas seasons (and a rich publishing contract) later, this touching tale relates the meaning of Christmas in a profound but simple way. Rick, Keri, and their 4-year-old daughter, Jenna, are hired as caretakers and are welcomed into the home of Mary, an ailing widow, just in time for the holidays. Before long, it becomes apparent that Mary cherishes their companionship, and this young family begins to understand that their relationship to Mary is more special than any one of them could have realized. These tender relationships, fraught with real-life struggles, are the backdrop for unraveling a mysterious secret that gently propels the reader through this short story. Unlike most generic Christmas stories, Evans manages to bypass triviality, imbedding these pages with humble truth and emotion. This tiny treasure will cause you to rejoice in the blessings of the season while stirring up a childlike vigor as old profundity is revealed anew. In a season often shrouded in selfishness and materialism, Evans reminds the reader that the only way that we can genuinely love one another is by accepting the greatest gift of love ever given--that of a Father who "so loved His children that He sent His son, that we might someday return to Him." --Jill Heatherly
Book Description
Since it was first published, more than seven million people have been touched by the magic of The Christmas Box, a holiday classic that is as beloved in our time as A Christmas Carol was in Dickens's.
When Richard Paul Evans wrote The Christmas Box, he intended it as a private expression of love for his two young daughters, Jenna and Allyson. Though he often told them that he loved them, he didn't feel that they could ever really understand the depth of his feelings until they had experienced the joy of rearing their own children, and by that time their relationship would have changed forever. In writing The Christmas Box, he hoped that at some time in the future they would read the book and know of their father's love.
As Evans began to write, he was amazed at the inspiration that flowed into his mind and heart. He completed the moving story of a widow and the young family who comes to live with her in less than six weeks, and bound twenty copies to give as Christmas presents to family and friends. In the following weeks, those twenty copies were shared and passed along from family to family, from friend to friend, and what began as a tale for two little girls became a message of miracles, hope, and healing for people throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
Heavy on sappiness, light on plot.......2007-10-07
This book is narrated beautifully with a lot of rich description. It contains a strong theme of appreciating your children, and has wonderful reminders of the true meaning of Christmas. Both are certainly worthwhile.
But the story that presents these ideas is significantly lacking. One example, without giving anything away, is when the narrator asks a neighbor a question. The neighbor knows the answer but instead says something to the effect of "I'll tell you next week." This is clearly a poor attempt at delaying a big revelation, which by the way is completely obvious by this point in the story anyway.
I do recommend this book if you want to read a stunning mental picture that will make you cry. If you want a clever plot though, this is probably not for you.
Abysmal beyond words.......2007-08-27
After recently raving to friends about a new Christmas book that I just read, they introduced me to Evans's, The Christmas Box (which I'd never heard of before), saying if you liked THAT book, then you'll love his. Well, all I can say is, what a huge disappointment. Not only was The Christmas Box a very contrived story, and short (it's not a book, fellow readers, but a short story that took me all of seventy minutes to read!), if it contained one more dialogue tag with an adverb attached (he said eerily; she said tearfully; he said thoughtfully etc., etc., to the point that 9 out of 10 dialogue tags laboured with adverbs) I think I'll jump off a cliff.
If you want to read a book that will make you laugh and cry, will cause you to tell your spouse you love him/her a little more often, will have you hugging your children a little tighter, and where the characters are so real you won't believe they're fictional, read Christmas at Grandfather's House by Mark Leever. (I just heard that Christmas at Grandfather's House is being made into a movie, so if you don't get a copy of the book, see for yourself when it comes to the theatre or television!)
Long story short, if you want to invest an hour or two of your time and see what The Christmas Box is all about, I'd recommend either take it out at your local library, or borrow it from a friend (as I did). Your valuable time is a high enough price to pay for this book; you don't need to add the regret of wasting hard-earned money to go along with it!
Sap and Salt Lake City.......2007-04-23
I'm not one for emotional literary melodrama and I've come across two reactions (mainly) to this book. Either one loves it and it brings a charming nostalgia or it is taken as a cheesy attempt at capturing Christmas via the tale of a bereft widow. Set in Salt Lake City, a family with young children moves into a quaint Victorian home (the likes of which I've never seen in dreary and overly suburbian Salt Lake) to care for an elderly widow, and discover this heartwarming old woman lost a child as a young wife. From there, the story loosely ties to the idea of life after death and how to heal through your grief of losing a loved one and how to appreciate your family while you have them. These are all appealing themes but I found this book to be quite commercial and a little too Disney meets the Lifetime channel. If you're into sappy books with overtly Christian themes this might be a good read. Otherwise, stick to Dickens for Christmas family narratives.
Sweet--and, Yes, Sappy--Christmas Tale.......2007-03-24
I listened to this book while driving in my car. As a "radio-drama", it was an excellent story. My fifteen-year-old daughter and I cried quite a bit throughout the second half of the story.
The book on tape is told from the father's perspective. He's working too hard and his little girl is growing up to fast. Only, like most of us who get caught in that trap, he doesn't realize just how fast she's growing up until...but that is the story, and I won't ruin it.
Yes, you will know the direction this story is going fairly quickly. No, there are not many surprises. Yet, every once in a while, it is good to hear a story that is sentimental and sweet.
I don't know if I would have enjoyed reading this as a book, but hearing it while driving was a worthwhile experience.
Christmas Classic.......2007-03-07
The Christmas Box should be a staple in every household and read every Christmas children and adults alike. The meaning of Christmas has been lost to many. Evans relates the true meaning of Christmas in a story he wrote for his daughters to remember the widow who took them in. Not only did she house them as long as they did their share, she made sure that she helped Evans to know exactly where his priorities lie.

Book Description
When I wrote my first book, The Christmas Box, it was an intensely personal expression. To me, The Locket has that quality too.
When I was sixteen, a high school sociology teacher gave us the assignment to visit a nursing home resident every week for the duration of her course.
My first meeting with my adopted resident, Lucille, was as awkward as I imagine a blind date with someone else's great-grandmother would be: Each attempt at conversation was met with blank, dubious stares.
Through time, I soon learned that I was Lucille's only visitor. That she spent her weekends and holidays alone in her small room, looking out at the pastoral landscape of the care facility. My attitude began to change. Lucille never spoke to me, never even learned my name, but I began to see something change in her demeanor whenever I visited. A quiet gratitude, perhaps. A friendship.
Two months later the assignment ended, but not my visits. I continued to spend time with Lucille until the day I walked in to find an orderly stripping her bed. When I asked Where Lucille was, the busy orderly replied, "She died yesterday."
It was only then that I realized the extent of my connection with Lucille. I left the facility deeply saddened that I never got the chance to say good-bye. I never went back.
That is, until I wrote The Locket. As I began to write the story of Michael Keddington and Esther Huish, I found that I had returned to that quiet room.
The Locket, like all of my novels, is a love story. A story about the young love of Michael and Faye and the challenges they face. It is also a story of old love, between Esther and the man she lost so many years before. But, ultimately, it is a story of the love between generations, and the nurturing and forgiveness those relationships always require.
My hope is for you to come to understand the many gifts the elderly can bring to our lives. And, most of all, that in reading The Locket, you, and those with whom you share my story, will be brought closer to those you love and those whom you should.
Sincerely,
Richard
Customer Reviews:
Excellent story!.......2007-10-09
This was an excellent book! It wasn't just a typical romance, instead, it focused on what comes after falling in love. Devotion, kindness, and respect were themes in this novel. It was well-written, and kept my attention until the end.
IT'S WHAT WE GIVE THAT HEALS US.......2007-10-03
With The Locket, Richard Paul Evans proves once again that when it comes to feel good, sentimental stories that tug at your heartstrings, he has no equal. As with his previous books The Christmas Box and The Letter, he utilizes his unique blend of fiction and inspirational writing to convey valuable messages of love, faith, forgiveness and redemption. His words take us on an emotional journey that leaves us reaching for the kleenex box as well as motivated to incorporate these precepts into our daily lives.
After the death of his mother, Michael Keddington takes a job at the Arcadia nursing home, where he meets parient Esther Huish, a woman who is instrumental in teaching Michael many valuable life lessons concerning forgiveness, overcoming insecurities, second chances and never putting things off until tomorrow.
The Locket of the title is Esthers gift to Michael. It serves as a symbol of the missed opportunities in her life and for Michael represents an opportunity to overcome a myriad of obstacles and begin his life anew.
This warm and beautiful story should kindle the flame of hope that burns in each of us. 4 1/2 stars
Highly recommended........2007-07-14
The old lady is one of the strongest female characters in modern literature. Evans is a very capable writer.
The locket.......2007-06-02
Simplistic writing, one dimensional characters, predictable plot. Easy read if you want something you can read on a three hour plane trip and throw away when you're done. Not for the discerning reader.
Wonderful, Endearing Book.......2006-09-12
I absolutely loved this book. I loved Michael. I loved the person he was, the way he took care of his mother, and his romantic relationship with Faye. I also loved Esther, but her situation was so sad. I kept asking her "Why did you allow that to happen?" But she was determined that the same thing did not happen to Michael and Faye. This book is touching and sentimental. One of Richard Paul's best books.

Book Description
Every mother has a treasure box. This touching story takes place on a quiet night several years after the death of Jesus, as Mary shares memories from her treasure box with her granddaughter Sarah. Am ong the items are straw from the manger, wool from the shepherds and the gifts of the Magi, gold, frankincense and myrrh. When Sarah asks why there is so little gold and frankincense but so much myrrh, Mary reminds her that when she went to anoint Jesus' body with the myrrh, he was risen. A touching story that will soon be a classic best-seller.
Customer Reviews:
This book is trash.......2006-05-06
I can't believe that such an evil book could make it past a publishing company and onto the shelves. It is disgusting that someone actually wrote a novel trying to say that the Ever-Virgin Mother of God slept around on Her only spouse, The Holy Ghost, with Her equally chaste guardian St. Joseph. This book is complete filth that just screams HERESY! The Ever-Virginity of Mary is a dogma in the Holy Catholic Church, and I can't believe that someone would write a book about Her without keeping the Catholic Church's, one of the only churches that honors Her, viewpoint in mind. It is filth like this under the guise of a children's story that is the work of Satan, and just begs God to send His chastisements down on the world.
Excellent Christmas Story.......2005-10-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as did the elementary age sunday school class. We plan to use this idea in our Candlelight service this year.
This book is heretical.......2004-04-25
If you are Catholic and believe in Mary's perpetual virginity you will not want to expose your children to this book. The premise is lovely if Mary was maybe showing these treasures to another cousin or relative, but her GRANDDAUGHTER? IMPOSSIBLE! This is heresy.
Huge problem with this book!.......2004-01-20
There is one huge problem with the premise of this book and that is that MARY DOES NOT HAVE GRANDCHILDREN. She is ever-virgin and has only birthed Jesus, God's son. Jesus never married or had children, so how could Mary have a grandchild? When I see books like this that get past publishers (Christian ones, to boot!), I have to wonder where this world headed.
Amazing Work!.......2001-08-01
Carolyn Kramlich creates a wonderful tapestry which brings the story of Christ's birth alive to anyone. The concept is applicable to today in that we all need to pass on those things that are dear to our hearts, mainly our faith. My church had a short drama wherein a mother read this story to her child on Christmas Eve. It brought tears to everyone's eyes because this same love that Mary felt for her Son is the same emotion that Christians feel for their Savior. After having personally met the author myself, I must say that her faith and love show through in her writing. I highly recommend this book! (It's a great Christmas present for anyone with children!)

Santa Paws a review by Audralee.......2002-12-18
Have you ever seen someone homeless, hungry, or cold? In a great book called Santa Paws by Nicolas Edwards a lost, homeless puppy tries to find a home for Christmas, while trying to find his family. The little dog has many surprises, hard times, and adventures.
In this book a sad puppy awoke, and he found that his family was not there. He went on an adventure to help some people and meet friends. He helped a poor blind girl find her wallet by grabbing it, and giving it to her, and then rubbing his head against her. The blind girl rewarded him by a pat on his head.
Another time he saved an old lady from a falling roof by howling very loudly and getting the neighbors. She rewarded Santa paws with a big piece of meat for all the nice things he had done he was rewarded a home. He never found his family though, but he will always remember them.
I recommend you to read this book that has a great resolution. It is so exciting and it will make you jump out of your seat.
A Great Book!!!.......2002-12-11
Santa Paws is a great book! It's about a stray dog that has to fight for a family and the right to be a normal dog. He goes through many perils and hard times but he always knows how to spend a Christmas!! Santa Paws got his name because some people saw him sleeping in a fake "Santa Sled" and said "Hey look! It's Santa Paws!" And the name stuck. Santa Paws had a lot of adventures but always made it back in time for Christmas!
