Golden Crown Literary Society award nominee finalist.......2007-08-08
Fascinating, Riveting Novel! Fast paced and utterly readable. This is an immensely entertaining book. Superior writing.
This is a page turner and makes an excellent beach or airplane read. Be prepared this is a bloody and violent story, chock full of unforgivable actions. The thirty-something leads are unforgettable.
Cain Casey is a New Orleans Mafia Crime Boss and makes a fascinating anti-hero. The fantastic supporting characters include 11 year old Hayden who is amazingly mature due to circumstances beyond his control.
This is a hugely popular book, I don't know anyone who has read it and not loved it.
I really enjoy this author's writing and look forward to reading her next novels. My favorites are the author's two romances 'Carly's Sound' and 'Second Season' - don't miss them!!
The sequel 'The Devil Unleashed' is available now.
Real Page Turner.......2007-01-12
This is a wonderful first novel. I have read earlier reviews and do generally concur. More detail/attention should have been paid to their physical features. Cain had lush, dark hair and blue eyes. Okay. Emma had blonde hair and green eyes. Okay. I was also keenly aware of something being missing though and finally realized that the physical relationship between Cain and Emma hadn't, for me, been sufficiently grounded from the beginning of the book. The earlier flashbacks were done well but failed to address what was missing, the history of/longing for their intense sexual attraction/desire. There was one scene and it was very nice but there was no volatile sexual chemistry woven throughout the story. I am not bemoaning a lack of explicit sexual scenes, but near the end when Emma felt a bolt of sexual energy/arousal when Cain touched her in the hospital room - there should have been more of that. And Cain was so completely shut down. What a soldier! Even when we believe she's bad for us, our feelings, emotional and sexual, will disagree with our brains. I didn't get any of that turmoil from Cain. Hayden was a very engaging youngster of 11, but smart or not, no 11 year old can sustain the depth of conversations and demonstrate the insight he did. He was just too young to be credible. Even Hannah at 4 was too young to be completely believed for some of her dialogue. I had trouble with those three areas. That distracted me throughout the read. But, I have already ordered the sequel because I really, really loved the story. It was engaging and entertaining and there are many fine lessons for all of us in there. Ali is a talented storyteller and I recommend this highly!
Must Have More.......2007-01-02
Like all of the other reviewers here, I absolutely loved this book. It is a must read that grabs your attention from the very beginning and holds on tight to it until you finish. Which won't take you too long as you will find yourself unable to put this book down. The only drawback that I see is in waiting for the next book in the series. I truly recommend buying both books together so you don't have any down time in between. Kudos to Vali for her vibrant writing.
Buy this book!.......2006-11-16
Kudos to Ms. Vali! Her characterization and style of writing is superb. I felt very connected to Mama Bear Cain, and although I could never imagine leaving my child, I felt equally strong about Emma and her choices. It takes real talent for a writer to make this reader tear up and feel like I have a stake in the characters' decisions. Truly a joy to read, I've already recommended this book to every person looking for a page turner. Did I mention I work in a bookstore?? :)
Amazing for the First Book!.......2006-08-31
Ali Vali has an amazing talent! I could not put this book down! The Devil Inside was an easy and very enjoyable read. For this being her first attempt at a novel, I think the work rates Vali up there with the likes of Radclyffe and Gerri Hill. I can not imagine anyone not liking this book and the great characters. Derby Cain is a tough and powerful woman with a soft side that lets you fall in love with her. Cain's family comes first especially her son Hayden. In the begining you doubt Emma, Cain's wife but by the end of the book you find yourself rooting for her. As the story unfolds Emma's character is transformed and it makes you wonder what level she will be taken to in the sequel.
I enjoyed the humor in this book and the way it flowed the whole way through...no stumbling here! Vali is a very talented writer with a bright future! I look forward to reading more...actually I can't wait!

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Nightcrawler, with some X-Men assistance, goes ghostbuster.
In the first part of the trade, 13 children staying in a psychiatric facility have been slaughtered, and he investigates.
Old girlfriend Amanda Sefton, now quite powerful and living in limbo is a very handy person to know through all this. Fourteen children, fourteen demons.
In the last part, he comes across some ghosts in a railway tunnel, and they need remembering.
Greatness.......2005-12-17
Nightcrawler just plains rock. I always loved him, he has such unique emotions that set him out from all the other characters. His story about not knowing who's his real parents are and joining the circus and falling in love with his step sister but then getting his heart broken by that stupid evil doctor. He gets abused, totured and amazingly he still has that sense of humor. It's an emotional, wild and out of this world trip and I love it, all x-men fans will enjoy and maybe even the non x-men fans will like it.

Plus: a special episode focusing on Daredevil's recently deceased best friend, Foggy Nelson. Did we really know all there is to know about Foggy? Customer Reviews:
This guy is really good!.......2007-09-06
Yes, yes. Daredevil is is really good, but that's not who I was referring to. I was talking about Ed Brubaker the writer of Daredevil since Bendis left. Unfortunately I missed most of Bendis' DD, but Brubaker has run with the ball admirably.
Brubaker loves crime fiction which is how Daredevil has been best written ever since Frank Miller. Brubaker's version is very gritty and realistic. You don't even see Matt Murdoch in costume for the whole first arc of Volume 1. Also Brubaker has brought in some of the classic villains in believable form in this volume. But this is definitely an ongoing mystery punctuated by some swashbuckling heroics. And the personnal life of Matt is just as intriguing and heart-wrenching as his vigilante life.
Brubaker continues his run, still going strong.......2007-07-21
In this second installment of Ed Brubaker's run on "Daredevil" (issues #88-93) the story settles into a more conventional mode. Free from prison, Matt Murdoch tours Europe, ninja-style, to find the identity of his recent tormentor, and runs afoul of a trio of baddies before finally piecing together whodunnit. At the end of the book, he has his life back and looks set for more-or-less business-as-usual superhero stories (although I'm sure Brubaker's future plotlines will be appropriately grim and dark...)
The return to normal may seem like a bit of a letdown, but considering how far back DD's legal problems stretch -- a couple of years, real-world time -- even though it's over, the recent story arc was quite an accomplishment. The "out" part of "Inside And Out" felt anticlimactic, but it's still a darn good read. Plus, what a great scene when DD decks a seemingly unstoppable tough guy (Tombstone) by smacking him across the jaw with a sledgehammer! Nice touch of realism there, Ed! (ReadThatAgain!)
Running with the Devil.......2007-07-15
As Ed Brubaker's (Captain America, Uncanny X-Men, Sleeper) run on Daredevil continues, we find fugitive Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil, on the run after making his daring escape from prison in the first volume of The Devil, Inside and Out. Daredevil's trek takes him out of the country and across the globe as he searches for the truth behind what seems to be an ever-growing conspiracy that hangs over his head. For Matt Murdock though, things are never as they seem to be, and soon enough, it looks as if things are starting to fall into place. What makes Brubaker's run on Daredevil so good so far is the intricate plotting and scripting he puts into every storyarc. He's crafted an action packed and enjoyable modern super hero romp that can make readers think Brian Michael Bendis never left the title, and that in itself is saying something. Michael Lark's artwork is still a noir-ish and well drawn style in the vein of former Daredevil artist Alex Maleev, and it still suits the title quite well. All in all, Ed Brubaker is slowly proving himself to be a worthy successor to Bendis, and the stage is set for the title to even go to a newer level.
Not much of a hero..........2007-07-09
While I really enjoyed most of the book and its swashbuckling take on the hero, the ending spoiled it with an illogical and immoral decision made by the title character, that conveniently returned the book to its status quo while making Daredevil into little more than a selfish opportunist.
The Excellent Quality Continues!.......2007-06-13
I'm a tremendous fan of Brian Michael Bendis' Daredevil, so when the news arrived that he was leaving the title, I found myself distraught. Before Bendis' run, I'd never really cared much for the character. And though many criticized the level of deconstruction he brought to the line, I always found his work riveting and more than entertaining.
That being said, Bendis left Daredevil in enough of a predicament that I wanted to see how this fella--Ed Brubaker--tied up Bendis' loose ends. Brubaker's The Devil, Inside and Out Vol 1 impressed me, but Vol. 2 left me in awe.
Brubaker has somehow, somehow, tied up the many dangling plots left behind by Bendis (I believe they agreed upon this, by the way; Bendis wasn't leaving a mess for someone else to clean up) in a way that was both satisfying and quite cleansing. New plot possibilities have organically arisen from the old, and while everything isn't exactly back to normal for Matt Murdock (is it ever?), I do feel as though Brubaker has set the stage to move on with his own agenda for the character and has successfully exorcised the benign ghost of Bendis.
So, in summation, I would like to recommend the entire current run of Daredevil. Kevin Smith got us off on the right foot, Bendis brought consistent quality and depth to a character I had never before respected, and Brubaker seems to keep all of the best aspects of what Bendis did, but has now brought his own brand of action and noir, further enriching an already rich hero.

I ordered this play because I had seen Fuddy Meers (also very good). David has a very unique vision of the world and that flows into his plays. I'm actually going to be directing a prodution of A Devil Inside this fall, I love this play.
Book Description
The spirit of Grendel seethes in the mind of everyone it encounters. A touch of death, of fear, of anger infects all, gripping at the soul, and wreaking havoc on the lives of those in its path. In this now-classic chapter of the Grendel saga, we return to Brian Li Sung, a once-successful Broadway stage manager who became Grendel after losing the love of his life-the granddaughter of the original Grendel, Hunter Rose. Now down and out, living in the slums of Brooklyn, Li Sung struggles as an off-off-off-Broadway stage manager by day; by night, he stews in the hatred and violence that is Grendel, and becomes a cold-blooded killer. When old friends can't help him, and the city can no longer cope with this scourge of destruction, it's up to one desperate cop to stop the murderous rampage, or die trying.

Customer Reviews:
May disturb some readers.......2002-08-12
A well-developed, involved mystery-suspense novel, with some sci-fi overtones, featuring fleshed-out, racially diverse, realistic characters most gay, lesbian or bisexual readers will be able to identify with. But if you prefer a healthy dose of PC with your reading, better pass on this one.
The novel does not hesitate to point out, even in the first chapter, some basic problems facing gay male society, including those pushed on us by others as well as those for which we can only blame ourselves. But it "goes where no gay novel has gone before", by (cleverly, in stages) blurring the line between homosexuality and pedophilia, a distincting that gay activists have spent considerable efforts in reinforcing. The fact that the accusation of gay-men-as-child-mollestors comes from misguided right-wing forces can easily be dismissed, but even the gay characters have occasional lapses of faith in the distinction.
All in all, a disturbing but absolutely riviting novel, which I recommend to those who can read it with an open mind.

Customer Reviews:
He's self-interested? Of course. So what?.......2000-08-18
Duke Zeller lived in the center of a maelstrom for 14 years. He uses this memoir to settle scores and put out his version of facts that remain in dispute. I'm puzzled about why other reviewers find these aspects of the book off-putting; this is a book written by a partisan, not a dispassionate history. Zeller's observations about the personalities that enlivened the Teamsters Union during his years of service are colorful and, if you filter for his biases, informative. His relationship with Presser was genuine, a fact even his critics concede. His book affords the reader more insight into Jackie Presser the person than anything else I've read on the topic. Presser, for all his flaws, was a charming rogue who managed to play all sides off against each other right up until his death. For the novice at Teamster history, a person could do worse than reading Steven Brill's "The Teamsters," then Zeller's memoir and then Kenneth Crowe's "Collision: How the Rank and File Took Back the Teamsters." While each author has obvious biases and blind spots, reading the three together provides a pretty good primer on Teamster history from James R. Hoffa through James P. Hoffa.
Zeller is also no slouch as a raconteur. In covering his pre-Teamster days, he tells a hilarious story about being chastised by LBJ for bringing Lynda Bird home late from a date back in the days when Zeller was a teenaged Capitol Hill page.
His tales about Presser's gold-digger wife also ring true, although again he makes sure to get his licks in and settle some old scores.
Duke Zeller is a flak with an agenda.......1997-06-29
I found this book to be entirely self-serving to the author's business and personal interests. Famous and powerful people are pictured on the dust jacket, but the story within contains little meat. Zeller spends a lot of time explaining how corrupt and moronic his friends and colleagues were. He describes himself in the midst of the action and playing an important role as a go-between for the Republican Party and corrupt, mafia supported Teamster bosses.
His shock and amazement upon becoming the target of a criminal investigation of wrong-doing within the Teamster's Union is incredible. If he took advantage of all the ill-gotten trips, lavish meals and other assorted activities, it is hard to believe he didn't know that he personally was ripping off dues-paying members.
In some ways I look at the book as a tragedy. The author is a middle-aged, gay, Republican, corruption tainted flak and seems to be using the book to cash in and try to set himself up for work. To this I attribute the final attack on the new Teamster leadership trying to deal with the sleaze and corruption perpetuated with help from Mr. Zeller
More politics of Jackie Presser than anything else........1997-02-14
When begining to read this book, one might think that it
is a biography of Presser. However, it is more a consideration of the politics of Presser and the politics that came to characterize the Teamsters over the years. The main problem with this approach is that at times the writing seems superficial and soap opera-esque. It can be rather annoying. In the end, the book is good for a leasure read, but not for a scholarly look at labor institutions.

This is a great book.......1998-02-20
A season is a lifetime is the story of Duke's back-to-back championship seasons. It is an interesting, insightful look into the relationships coach K has with his players. There is no collegiate program better than Duke's, and there is no better book about Duke than A Season is a Lifetime
