Book Description
It's 1796 and not only is love between men taboo, it is punishable by death. Lt. David Archer is an officer in His Majesty's Navy and a gentleman of Regency Society. He is also hopelessly in love with his shipmate, Lt. William Marshall. David is certain that his feelings, if expressed, would be met with revulsion. Afraid of losing the strong friendship that he has forged with William, he vows to never speak of or act on his desire, promising himself to take the secret to his grave.
Although William is young, his innate talent has allowed him to quickly rise above his humble background and gain a reputation as a promising officer. The Royal Navy is his world, and in that world there is no room for anything as frivolous as romance.
Then, in a twist of fate, the two men are abducted by a ruthless pirate who finds pleasure in toying with his captives. Thrown together in close quarters and wondering if they will survive, they're are faced with some difficult choices. William struggles with his growing feelings for David and, try as he might to dismiss them, he can't. When David makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect the man he loves, the reason for it is clear and the passion that the men have denied for so long is realized for the first time. Before the lovers can have any sort of life together, they must first escape. After that, they face an even greater challenge-is their love strong enough to survive a clandestine life under the ever-present threat of the Navy's implacable Articles of War?

A nice light read........2007-10-05
Ransom is a delightful light read. A romance novel that will keep you on edge as the two main characters are taken on an adventure that neither one was ready for. If you like "Romance" stories or even historical novels then this is the book for you. I also suggest the companion book (I guess part two) Winds of Change, also by Lee Rowan.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!.......2007-09-18
I didn't know what to expect since I had never read anything from this author.
I was immediately taken with the story and the writing. It grabs you and doesn't let go. I didn't want to put it down and was sad to come to the end of the book.
It was nice to know there was a sequel and I have already started reading this one!
I highly recommend this book!
A lovely balance of romance and adventure.......2007-09-03
Ransom is one of the better written gay romances I've read, a love story with a delicious emphasis on the romance. The two leads are sympathetic and believable. I was fonder of Will than David, but I liked them both. Set in the 18th century, Ransom is the story of two navy men who are kidnapped and, in the course of their confinement, come to realize that what they feel for each other is a whole lot more than friendship. They risk their careers and lives by confessing their deeper feelings for each other and succumbing to a physical expression of that love. Initial awareness is primarily David's, but David has suffered enough abuse at the hands of others to believe that he is a villain himself for wanting Will as he does. In a lovely, touching scene--one of my favorites in the book--he discovers that intimacy between two men does not have to be a violent, ugly thing.
All the scenes between David and Will were sweet and real without being maudlin. I liked Will's sense of humor and his spirit and I liked David for his gentleness and the inner strength he hardly seemed to realize he possessed. Their friendship from the start had an intimate feel to it of easy-going, comfortable trust and I enjoyed the way it evolved into romantic love--gently, awkwardly, sometimes hesitantly, and always realistically. The novel has a depth to it I'd like to see in more gay romance novels--or any romance novels. The characters are fully realized, with personal histories and pursuits beyond the main plot. They're clever and dogged and brave and sometimes impulsive. They suffer doubts and take risks, all in human and understandable ways. They use their heads and even manage to listen to their hearts when the time comes. And--thank goodness--the sex scenes do not overpower the story. Instead, the scenes warm the reader with the fierce desire that erupts between Will and David. They are real men, not afraid to be tender with each other, working their way through awkward moments with a need for each other that was exceptionally well expressed by the author.
The supporting cast was vividly realized as well. I had faith that Drinkwater and the crew would be clever and resourceful, but I was especially glad to find Will, David, and their Captain as clever and resourceful in their efforts to escape. The characters do not sit and stew over their situation; they act and that adds to their appeal. It makes them worth rooting for and I rooted for them all the way through. I also felt the villain was interestingly drawn, with weaknesses of his own which were well-exploited by the heroes, especially David, who went through a harrowing time. There were one or two moments when his self-abasement was a little much, despite how understandable it was under the circumstances. Still he managed to be tough and self-sufficient in ways that made me like him better by the story's end.
The period details are superb. I haven't read much in the seagoing genre, but settings in this novel were so well drawn, every scene was a complete vision easy to see in my head. Even the terrible closeness of the cells was a vivid sensory experience. I think this is one of the author's strengths. Rowan has a great eye for the right details in digestible amounts, all the little things that need to come together to create a picturesque whole. The pace is good and there's a nice tension that propels you along to a well-done and exciting conclusion. I enjoyed the book and am interested to see what the author will do in future stories.
Couldn't Put This Book Down!.......2007-08-12
I usually do not have much patience for reading random books but almost from the start this story threw our two main characters into trouble. Once I was well introduced to the characters, which didn't take long, I could not put this book down and flew through this book in practically two days.
The story is about mostly about the development of the relationship between Lt. David (Davy) Archer and Lt. William (Will) Marshall. What starts off as a friendship will gradually turn into the obvious.
At first the story did not seem to be very explicit but I can assure you it will gradually build up. Sometimes it became repetitive, such as Davy's constant feelings of shame and guilt however it was still a very satisfying story. The turmoil of emotions certainly makes up for the lacking. The interaction was especially very touching and the story was written very well with a believable plot. I'm certainly glad I had picked up this book and can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!
Two young sailors held hostage at sea fall into each others arms.......2007-07-27
Set in 1796 at a time when love between two men was not only considered and abhorrent aberration but was punishable by death, Lt William Marsha and acting Lt David Archer are officers in the Royal Navy, and very good friends. Both are young and keen to progress in the Service, and their abilities seem certain to promise they will. However David has a problem, he has fallen in love with his friend Will, but fearing the consequences of any such admission he chooses to quell his desires.
But events intervene when along with their captain the two friends are abducted and held hostage for ransom. Imprisoned on an unknown ship their captain is held in one cell while the two young sailors are held in another. To make matters worse the good looking blond haired David proves too attractive for their captor, Captain Adrian, and is regularly taken from his cell to suffer his unwanted advances.
In their attempts to keep up their moral and maintain unity against their captor David and Will are drawn ever closer until the inevitable happens and they end up in each others arms, and more. Despite their uncertainty, they cannot deny their feelings, but how can they pursue such a relationship when the slightest hint of anything improper between them would bring ruin or worse? And if they do escape their captors, what will it mean for David if Captain Adrian's abuse of him becomes known?
The developing relationship between the two unsuspecting lovers is beautifully told, and the dangers they face as captives along with their attempts at escape keep one on the edge of ones seat, reading as fast as possible as the tension rises. But one will not want to hurry the subtly handled passages of passionate yet tender moments between the two officers; their expressions of love and concern for each other, particularly in the face of all David has endured at the hands of selfish uncaring brutes, are most endearing and moving.

In Ransom, New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood returns to her beloved Highlands and the dark days of the despotic rule of King John to reacquaint readers with Scottish chieftain Brodick Buchanan, first introduced in The Secret. Brodick finds himself playing protector to Gillian, an exquisite English beauty, who is desperate to find her long-lost sister and a treasure of incalculable worth--one for which many already have died, including Gillian's own father. Coerced by the fiendish Baron Alford, who murdered her father before her eyes and usurped her birthright 14 years earlier, Gillian must return to England with Arianna's Box, a bejeweled golden box commissioned by King John, or her beloved Uncle Morgan will be tortured to death. In spite of Gillian's fragile looks and her loathsome English bloodlines, Brodick encounters a woman of immeasurable courage and determination, one not at all intimidated by his legendary temper or imposing size. And as he realizes that he has met his match in Gillian--whose sense of honor and duty equals his own--their passion for each other grows ever stronger in this thrilling historical. --Alison Trinkle
Book Description
The #1 New York Times bestselling author adored by a worldwide audience, Julie Garwood weaves an intricate tapestry of intrigue and emotion in this daring new novel. Stepping back to the silver-shrouded Highlands of her classic tale The Secret, Garwood hails the return of two unforgettable heroes -- Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan -- and follows a twisting labyrinth of deadly secrets and medieval splendor.
In the dark days after the death of Richard the Lionhearted, lives and lands would fall into upheaval at the hands of a power-hungry British ruler and his violent minions. One victim of the scourge is innocent Gillian, who is a mere child when the cruel and ambitious Baron Alford slaughters her father and tears her family apart. Alford, determined to recover a jeweled box for the despotic King John, is furious when the precious treasure slips through his fingers -- only to be lost for more than a decade.
Now a beautiful young woman who has forged a life for herself, Gillian finds the key to resolving her past in handsome Scottish chieftains Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan. With the cunning and courage of the daring Scotsmen to aid her, and finding a bond of trust and friendship with a new ally, Bridgid KirkConnell, Gillian at last fights the unscrupulous Baron Alford, laying claim to her home, her family, and her father's reputation. But in the presence of the mighty warriors beside them, Gillian and Bridgid will discover that desire can be a weapon of conquest...betrayal can slay trust in a heartbeat...and the greatest risk of all is surrender -- to the deep emotions of unexpected love.
Resounding with the steely clash of sword-against-sword, and the pounding of hearts bound by cliff-hanging peril, Ransom sweeps from Scotland to England with all of the majesty of medieval glory days. With her special storytelling gifts in full force, Julie Garwood spins an unforgettable page-turner of passion and loyalty, justice, and honor.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best I've read from Julie Garwood, but not bad either..........2007-10-08
Gillian is only a child when she watches her father be murdered. Before his death, Gillian's father entrusts her sister with one of King John's most prized treasures, a jeweled box commissioned for his love Arianna. In their haste to escape before they meet the same fate as their father, Gillian and her sister are separated. Years later, the usurper who killed Gillian's father inhabits his home and demands that she find her sister and the box, or he will kill Gillian's uncle.
Brodick Buchanan is a fierce, proud Highlander and the leader of one of the most fearsome Highland clans. When Gillian tells him of her mission, he is charmed by her innocence, beauty, and kind heart. In order to protect her from those who would do her harm, Brodick decides to make Gillian his wife. In so doing, he agrees to help her find Arianna's box and save her uncle from certain death.
Ransom like reading three stories in one. Gillian and Brodick's was only the primary story. There is also the secondary story of Brodick's friend Ramsey Sinclair, another Highland laird, and his infatuation with his ward, a girl so beautiful that soldiers keep proposing to her despite her insistence on marrying for love. Then there's the story of the merging of Highland clans and the inherent difficulty in mixing their heritages.
This story wasn't exactly a romance, since the romance took a backseat to the subplots of revenge and pride. But I still enjoyed it. Julie Garwood can do no wrong in my eyes, and her story was still carefully crafted and well told despite its focus on family matters rather than the relationship between the hero and heroine. I also had a problem with the fact that, while the story was more than 500 pages, only after the first 300 do the hero and heroine even fall for each other. This story was good, but not great and is definitely not one of Garwood's best. I would recommend Honour's Splendour or the Bride if you want to read a more fully developed Garwood romance.
I Loved It.......2007-09-12
Beautifully written! I finished the book in a day and reread it again the next day, that was how good it was!!! A must read! If you don't believe me, read it for yourself! Ms. Garwood is one of my favorite authors!
Good but not the best.......2007-07-19
This sequel to 'The Secret' is pretty good but I liked 'The Secret' better than this one. 'Ransom' is a fast read but ends a bit abruptly. The author could have developed Ramsey's romance in a separate novel. That would have justified his charming personality.
A new reader would find this novel neat but if you have read her earlier novels like Saving Grace and The Secret, this doesn't stand a good chance.
It doesn't get much better than this..........2007-07-16
Garwood is, hands down, my favorite author of historical romance. And of all her books, Ransom is the one I could read every day and never get bored. The heroine is wonderful and the hero is sublime. The story moves at a fast clip, never once dragging the reader down. Be sure and start with The Secret as this is the sequel, but you won't be disappointed in either. Thank you, Julie Garwood!! You have given me many, many hours of escape and enjoyment.
Keeps you reading..........2007-06-01
4 1/2 stars. I found this to be a very enjoyable book and it kept me interested throughout. From the first page I was hooked. It was fast paced, funny, entertaining and romantic. I loved the relationship between Gillian and Brodick because it evolved and wasn't forced. Yes they fell in love quickly, unbeknownst to the both of them, but it wasn't contrived as in some cheesy romances I've read. It was inevitable that they were going to be attracted to one another b/c they had so much chemistry. There is so much to this story that I won't break down the plot for you as others have done. I'll just say that the plot was really good and there was a also good sense of mystery involved. I also liked the secondary characters in the book such as Ramsey Sinclair, Brigid and Ian Maitland. I think the love story between Ramsey and Brigid could have been made into their own book and that the end of their story was tied up so neatly and cut off, but it was still good nonetheless. I loved when Ramsey asked her who she was in love with and she told him, without really telling him.. "I can't tell you that LAIRD/RAMSEY" she'd say. He he he.
I loved Gillian's character. Although she was "stubborn" and "tough" in her own right, it wasn't overboard. It was just right. Brodick is sexy, rough, confident and a ruffian ...all perfect for a hero. This is a must read for any romance fans.

Miami attorney Nick Rey was perturbed by his fiancée's ocean-side pronouncement that in the future her title should be preceded by "ex-". So perturbed that he barely noticed when, seconds later, a sharp-shooting seagull dropped him another plate of the same. Odd to think that he'd shortly look back on it all as, well, a day at the beach.
Then again, having one's father kidnapped and held for ransom by Columbian revolutionaries will alter one's perspective, as will hearing that the FBI's declined to pursue the matter as they suspect the kidnappee, Matthew Rey, is not a commercial fisherman at all, but a drug smuggler. The state department, citing official policy against paying kidnappers, won't intercede and, oh yes, the insurance company that sold dad his $3,000,000 kidnap-and-ransom policy won't pay up because they think he's as much in cahoots as he is in Cartagena. Nick's sister, Lindsey, who's probably in South America, hasn't been heard from in a month, and his mother's pregnant.
And that's just the starting block as Nick and the beautiful insurance investigator, Alex Cabrera (also a former revolutionary), run waist-deep into pan-American treachery and deceit--and nifty plot twists and surprises--much of it supplied by Nick's own law firm, Coolidge, Harding and Cash.
Throughout A King's Ransom, author and Miami attorney James Grippando deftly balances first-person (Nick's) and third-person (Matthew's) narrative with true-to-life dialogue and characters drawn as well or better than most. It's fast, it's gripping, and it's getting to be a habit with him. Grippando bolted from the starting gate (and, presumably, the courtroom) with 1994's breath-holder The Pardon; if his sixth book in eight years is any indication, he'll neither slow down nor reenter the courtroom for some time to come. --Michael Hudson
Book Description
The author of five bestselling novels, including Under Cover of Darkness and The Pardon, James Grippando writes compulsively readable thrillers that could be drawn from today's headlines, only better. Now his trademark gifts are wonderfully demonstrated in a taut new tale of intrigue that will keep you guessing to the final, breathtaking scene.
Just two years out of law school, Nick Rey is on the career fast track at a hot Miami law firm when he is suddenly plunged headfirst into a dangerous bid to save his father. Matthew Rey has been kidnapped while on business in Columbia's exotic port city of Cartagena. The ransom demand of three million dollars is far more than the Rey family can ever hope to raise.
Fortunately, Matthew had purchased an insurance policy to protect against just such a threat. Unfortunately, the kidnappers seem to know all about the policy, and the insurance company, suspecting fraud, is refusing to pay out.
With nowhere to turn, Nick links up with Alex, a beautiful, street-smart woman who may be the only person capable of negotiating with Matthew's abductors. But Nick soon discovers that the gravest dangers to him and his family are not the kidnappers and their guns, but the men in suits: lawyers, to be exact, at a powerful firm with something to hide, and they will stop at nothing to keep Nick from unleashing the truth.

Another Grippando Great.......2006-07-05
I stay awake lots of nights reading this authors books. This is another all nighter.
Grippando does it again!.......2006-07-05
I just can't put his book down. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
A real page turner.......2006-06-22
I have often heard of a book being called a page turner, but in my 50 some odd years of reading, this was my first. I was not ready for the book to end, wanting it to continue for another 500 pages. The villains were well drawn, and of course, the plot surprises were all ways lurking. As a frequent traveler to South America, the story was all too real and frightening. It is simply the best book I have read in a long time.
SILLY REVIEWS.......2005-10-24
Is it literature, is it deadly accurate? Who cares? What a great story, not one wasted word. Terrific characters, terrific
dialogue, and very original story. Terrific work, Mr. Grippando.
A good read, but don't pick it up if you want "literature".......2005-04-02
There's something I don't get about many of these reviews. Some reviewers knock this book because it isn't "literary" enough; some knock it because the dialogue is wooden. The first clue anyone should have of this book is that it is a THRILLER. A thriller is nothing more than entertainment. And in all but a very few examples (some of Agatha Christie's books, for example), a thriller does not purport to be literature. If you want literature, read drivel like "The Corrections" or "The Five People You Meet In Heaven." If you want a good, entertaining read, pick this book up.
This novel does what an entertaining thriller should: Has a simple enough plot with good guys/gals and bad guys/gals easily identified. It poses an interesting "What-If": What if your father was kidnapped in Columbia and the insurance he has for such this instance is cancelled? Certain scenes in the book frustrate you as you side with the protagonist; certain scenes get your blood pumping when something dangerous begins happening; certain scenes touch you, like when Nick goes to help his mother who fell ill.
The book isn't perfect. Some of the twists are transparent. Some of the dialogue is wooden. Some of the characters are caricatures. If you're looking for a "perfect" book, my guess is that you don't read much. If you're looking for an entertaining read...something that takes you away from the present and real and transports you into the world the writer creates for you, then you should enjoy this book. I recommend it.

Classic story that gets read over and over in our house.......2004-01-30
Fantastic story, amazing illustrations. My daughters and I have both loved this book from the first time that we read it. The story is sweet and you just want this little girl's day to last forever. A must read, over and over.
a favorite in our house.......2003-09-03
This book reminds me so much of when I was a little girl and went with my mother to run errands. Back then the stores really did hand out keyrings and pocket calendars and my Grandma worked at a dry cleaner so I got to see the "magic machine" a lot when people picked up their clothes. My girls both love this book, even though the oldest is now 13. We have completely worn out the binding of the hardback copy we have!
Fantastic!~.......2002-01-25
This is truly a wonderful book!
This story is told by the little girl who is going to town with her mother for the morning.
She has a big green pocketbook, just like Mama's, but hers is empty and she can't find anything to put inside it.
Mama says "hurry", because the bus is coming, so the little girl brings her empty pocketbook along anyway.
During the course of the morning, she gathers many treasures and by the time the bus comes to return the girl and her mother home, her pocketbook is full.
The little girl's view of the world is refreshing and enchanting~
She observes that the cool marble walls in the bank smell like pennies~ And she is amazed that, at the drycleaners, the machine knows exactly where to stop for mama's suit.
This is a delightful book that moms and daughters will enjoy, but both boys and girls will like hearing it, and seeing the usual best from Candice Ransom and Felicia Bond's awesome pictures.
Big Green Pocketbook's a hit.......2001-07-09
My 22 month old daughter loves to read this book with me! i think she likes that the main character is a big girl and she's spending the day with her mom- something my little one can really relate to!
Lovely bond between mom and daughter.......2000-08-29
This is a wonderful book for mothers to read to or with their daughters. A simple day of errands turns into something magical between them and a hand-me-down green pocketbook holds the key to a delightful day.

Little Red Riding Hood.......2007-01-09
This was a gift that I gave with a doll that had 3 faces (Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, and the Wolf). The combination went over really well.
:).......2005-12-01
This was the bestest book I have ever read!!! I didn't like the big bad ugly mean wolf though. He was evil!!! The ending was good though!
Don't take the wrong path by Tamera Wright.......2005-11-18
I like this version of Little Red Riding Hood because no one gets killed in the end. This book takes place in the woods. Little Red Riding Hood was walking to her grandma's house and decided to take a different path. When she got to grandma's house, there was the wolf wearing grandma's nightgown, which had sheep print on it. The wolf locked grandma away in the closet in hopes of saving her for a late night snack. Luckily the wolf didn't eat or hurt anyone, he accidentally fell out of a window, tumbled down a hill and ran away. Afterwards Little Red unlocked the closet door and let grandmother out. They later had a picnic and lived happily ever after.

Freedom's Ransom is the fourth novel in Anne McCaffrey's Freedom series, also known as the Catteni Sequence. The sequel to Freedom's Landing, Freedom's Choice, and Freedom's Challenge, Freedom's Ransom will please some fans of this star-spanning science fiction series, but others will find the book slow-paced, talky, and lacking in action. Freedom's Ransom ends conclusively, with no major unresolved plot lines, yet leaves space for at least one sequel.
The planet Botany was settled by a mixed group of humans and aliens, slaves of the alien Catteni and their alien masters, the Eosi. But one Catteni was dropped on Botany with the slaves: Zainal, who helped them win their independence. Now Botany must establish trade with other planets in order to survive. But the other worlds have been ravaged by the Catteni, and once-proud Earth has been reduced to primitive poverty, its technology stolen by corrupt Barevi merchants. To save Botany, Zainal and Kris Bjornsen, his human lover, must find a way to help all the worlds.
While the preface of Freedom's Ransom crisply summarizes the preceding books, this series has so many characters, races, and planets that newcomers should start with the first book, Freedom's Landing. Sophisticated SF readers aren't likely to enjoy the series, but it should hook young adults; if you're looking to broaden a child's reading beyond Harry Potter, try Anne McCaffrey's Freedom series and Dragonriders of Pern series. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
The surviving colonists of the planet Botany have conquered the alien invaders who enslaved them. But their ravaged world needs technology. Planet Earth needs food. And now the survivors need to decide what kind of world they will become.

Freedom's Ransom.......2007-07-17
I truly enjoyed this book, as this is the second time I have purchased and read it. I have all of Anne McCaffrey's books and enjoy reading and re-reading them.
not as good as the prequels.......2007-07-13
This one is not as good as the previous ones. I mean, c'mon... Starbuck's and dentistry? It just doesn't seem as fleshed out as the rest. I just hope Anne can show us the farmers more before she dies.
Continuing the adventure..........2006-11-04
Love it! Love it! Love it! A series that incorporates all my favorite genre: Romance, Sci-Fi, and Adventure! When the Third of the Freedom series ended I was told that it was the last! I felt like I had lost touch with family members! I am excited to have the saga continue in Freedom's Ransom. Hopefully there will be more to follow.
Description of a story, not a story itself.......2006-08-19
Freedom's Ransom could have have been a good story, but instead, it is a description of a story. Instead of dialog and action telling the story, the story is described in prose. It brings to mind the old line "SHOW the reader, don't TELL her!" This is definitely a book that could have used another rewrite to replace the tedious prose with dialog and action. This isn't the first of her books about which I'd make this same complaint.
Looks like another case of no rewrite and paid by the word.......2005-08-12
Title says it all. Too many writers are writing series in which the plot never develops, irrelevant side stories distract from the plot, and phrases get repeated over and over with no purpose.
Book Description
"Nobody who knows Bill Deasy's wonderful music will be surprised to find that this book is filled with soul. Deasy quietly explores the ties that bind, and the evolution of a heart that everyone will recognize, and root for" -- Jane McCafferty, author of "One Heart" --- Ransom Seaborn is an astonishing literary debut in the spirit of Gatsby and Holden Caulfield.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book - If you liked Catcher in the Rye..buy this.......2007-08-01
Friend told me about this book. Won some sort of award so gave it a try. Well worth it. Deasy is a great writer.
A book to cherish, beautifully designed cover and all.......2007-05-08
I read about RANSOM SEABORN on the POD-dy Mouth blog when Bill Deasy's book won the 2006 Needle Award. I've yet to hear who's picked up this title to reprint, but I hope it gets the marketing and promotional dollars it deserves. RANSOM SEABORN was a perfect rainy-weekend read for me; a welcome return to college days; a reminder of what it was like to drive so many small-town roads when you're young and in search of so many answers. I trusted Bill Deasy the songwriter would weave a lyrical tale, and I was right. Ransom and Fin will live for a long time in the memories of those who read this deceptively brief story of love, life, and...ultimately...faith in what makes it all so real.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-05-04
I saw this in the "local" section of my neighborhood Borders bookstore, and bought it on a whim. I knew the name as a local musician, so I thought I'd give it a read. It sat on my desk for 6-8 months. Man, if I'd known how good it was, I would have cracked it immediately...
This book worked for me in that it painted a picture of something I had never experienced--a freshman year. I went to college at 31. As a result of being older than the typical student, I felt a bit like an outsider. This helped pull me into the book and it's characters.
If you havn't read a novel in a while, I highly recommend this one. It's not very long, it's enjoyable to read and it's filled with humanity and grace.
An excellent first work.
hauntingly beautiful.......2007-03-10
memories blended with imagination to create truth far more beautiful than anyone could guess. But then, I should have known - and deep down, i did.
thanks for the ride. It's True. james Diener
All I expected...and more..........2007-01-13
I've always been a sucker for sad, bittersweet, beautiful songs. So it's no surprise that when I first heard Bill Deasy's songs several years ago, I became an ardent fan. It's also no surprise that he would write a novel; many of his songs are musical novels in miniature. Deasy has the uncommon ability to present loss, disappointment, and desperate searching as qualities of value. His characters' challenges leave you somehow hopeful rather than discouraged. It's appropriate that his first novel is about a character dealing with many "firsts": first time away from home, first love, first inspiration, and first misfortune. I think Bill Deasy should try painting next; his brush strokes would likely be soft and rich, poignant and fine.
