5 out of 5 stars Kids love to tell the story.......2007-06-13

This book is for younger kids than David Weisner's so although it's not as beautiful as Weisner's picture books, my kids (5 & 4) can understand the story better. I have them tell me what's going on as we look at the pictures, and this has become one of their favorites.

5 out of 5 stars It is What You Make of It.......2007-06-11

When I presented this little red book to five-year-old twins, I honestly wasn't sure what their reaction would be. I was pleased to discover they were as immediately enthralled with it as I was. They took it to the couch, looked through the pictures for a few minutes, and be to tell each other stories about the book. Even better, this book as inspired them to make their own wordless books, which they delight in sharing with anyone who shows an interest.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting journey.......2007-04-18

I really like using this picture book with my older readers. They are always suprised and full of questions as they "read" it. Wordless picture books aren't always just for the younger readers. This is a book that kids may return to time and time again. It's a little episode of "The Twilight Zone" between the pages!

5 out of 5 stars Red book review.......2007-01-18

My son enjoyed the book very much, and thought it was very clever.

5 out of 5 stars Great Red Book!!!.......2006-11-22

As a student-teacher I choose this book to write a lesson. There is so much you can teach with this. Comprehension, drama, writing, vocabulary yes, and of course, lets children use their imagination.

4 out of 5 stars A prelude for things to come.......2007-09-17

I would have liked this book more if I read it before the invention of John and Susan Sutter and, even more obviously, Paul Brenner and John Corey. It is clear that Ben Tyson was the seed for each of the male characters and he is like a wild cross of all three. His blood was as blue as Sutter's, his wit and honor are all Brenner, and the rest is all Corey. Marcy is certainly the first stab as Susan Sutter, who I regard as the finest character Demille ever wrote.

That said, it should not detract from a unique and disturbing story. Like many early Demille works, it takes its time painting detailed character portraits and it allows the scenery to breathe. Unfortunately for me, I read the first 200 pages in the winter before finally finishing the last 500+ in the summer. Like some other readers, I had a hard time staying with this one, but was thrilled when I did pick it back up. I back-read a lot and it wasn't tough to remember who was who.

Some parts of the book were long-winded and maybe unnecessary, but it all worked in the end. Ditto some characters like Chet Brown, Col Levin, even Sister Teresa. Lots of loose ends, imo. As a person born in the year this took place, I won't pretend to understand a Vietnam vet's mind. I do challenge some of the reaches Demille took as far as Tyson's unwillingness to open up to his family about his role in the massacre. I also wonder why he'd want to bring that upon himself when he was given an out by Major Harper. A lot of it seemed contrived, but it made for a good character and story, hence the "fiction" tag that accompanies the book. ;-)

If there was a disappointment, it was that it took its time for 737 pages only to end in an instant inside of a couple paragraphs. I almost think Demille was up against a deadline and was told to end it already. The end was frantic, especially with regard to his family situation, and then the screen goes to black. I'd have liked a few more pages to see some things out. The storytelling was uneven in spots, especially when it involved him and his wife. One minute they are close and sticking together, the next they are apart, then together, etc... not a lot of explanation around the changes, either. Still, there was enough to keep you occupied.

A very good effort with an intriguing premise, but not Demille's best, imo. The Gold Coast remains his Gold Standard for me, followed by the underrated Up Country. MOH is definitely a step above the corny John Corey action novels and is probably on par with Charm School. It is a worthwhile read that holds up 20 years after its first print.

4 out of 5 stars He's Done It Again.......2007-03-09

Some of his books tend to drag to me for the first couple of hundred pages. Then once the story is set up, they take off and don't let up. I agree with other reviewers, this book had some of the greatest courtroom scenes ever written. Another excellent story Mr. Demille.

5 out of 5 stars DeMille's best? Maybe........2007-02-19

Wow! You may have mixed feelings about the ending, but you'll be fascinated throughout. Tremendous courtroom dramatics.

5 out of 5 stars Simply DeMille's Best!.......2006-07-06

Word of Honor is not only arguably DeMille's finest novel it may well be one of the best novels you'll ever read. It quite simply crawls into your gut, sticks to your ribs and stay with you whole as you digest the significance of its powerful message.

And it's one hell of a read!

Ben Tyson is called to disclose the actions of his platoon twenty years after the Battle of Hue in a court of military law. Intermingled with flashbacks and back stories regarding a combat incident his unit handled during an extreme instant, a stressful moment about an 'event' between 'brothers'.

The courtroom scenes in this book are quite simply brilliantly crafted.

Tyson is a tight, faceted personality possessing the wry sarcasm and humor and open intelligence that only DeMille can create. Lucky for us he doesn't shower this attention on just his main character since everyone has a compelling, vital story to tell.

How can those of us who weren't there understand such complex feeling? Yet, DeMille, makes us understand, he transports our souls with the written word unlike no other and quietly says....this was our reality.

5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT story!!.......2006-06-30

I've read some of DeMille's recent work but not any of the earlier stuff...until now. A friend recommended Word of Honor to me, indicating the book contains some of the best courtroom scenes ever written. Having read the book in just about one sitting, I'd have to concur. The book is fast paced and near impossible to put down once you're into the flow of the story. The characters and setting are great, as is the dialogue throughout the book.

The book is concerned with atrocities committed in Vietnam by troops under the command of Ben Tyson, a man who's achieved success in middle age in his career, living comfortably in Long Island. When a book is released which tells the story of the atrocities, Tyson is dragged back into the Army and courtmartialed. The way the 'truth' of what really happened is revealed over the course of the book through the eyes of various participants is handled masterfully by DeMille.

I highly recommend this book!

In another wondrous, wordless picture book by Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner (Tuesday and June 29, 1999), a class visiting the Empire State Building finds complete cloud cover and no visibility. One boy makes friends with a cloud (identifiable in the mists by the red mittens, hat, and scarf and swipes from the boy), and goes AWOL on a wonderful adventure. The cloud whisks him away to the "Sector 7" floating cloud factory, a bizarre sky station that looks like a Victorian design for a submarine.

Hiding behind his new cumulonimbus friend, the boy enters an area resembling Grand Central Station (complete with "Arrivals" and "Departures" boards) and watches officious human types in uniform giving the clouds their weather assignments. When the clouds complain to the boy that their assigned shapes are boring, he, a talented artist, creates new blueprints for them. The stuffy grownups are furious when clouds start emerging in the shape of fantastic fish; they shout at the clouds, tear up the new designs, and escort the boy back to his school group. But the revolt of the clouds is unstoppable now, and in the last few pages the skies over Manhattan suddenly get a lot more interesting. (Click to see a sample spread. Book Description

Only the person who gave us Tuesday could have devised this fantastic tale, which begins with a school trip to the Empire State Building. There a boy makes friends with a mischievous little cloud, who whisks him away to the Cloud Dispatch Center for Sector 7 (the region that includes New York City). The clouds are bored with their everyday shapes, so the boy obligingly starts to sketch some new ones. . . . The wordless yet eloquent account of this unparalleled adventure is a funny, touching story about art, friendship, and the weather, as well as a visual tour de force.

5 out of 5 stars Escher and imagination.......2007-08-05

Flotsam and Freefall were the first two books I explored by David Wiesner. Sector 7 is not to be missed either. Wiesner's style and creativity are wonderful explorations for all humans(and especially children). M.C. Escher has an honored presence in this book, as he does in Freefall. The theme of flying is present here, as in all of Wiesner's books, and the fanciful creative nature of Wiesner's story and illustrations (paintings?) are not to be missed. Second language learners will immediately have something to say (in their own language) about this book. So will everyone else who reads it. Anyone who has taken the time to sit back and enjoy the show clouds put on will appreciate the ideas within this book. Don't hesitate!

5 out of 5 stars Worlds Above the Rest.......2007-05-07

Wiesner, D. (1999). Sector 7. New York: Clarion Books.

Synopsis: Cloud watching on a lazy day while lying in the grass, is a fun summertime activity for adults and children of all ages. But how are these clouds formed? Who created them? David Wiesner amazes readers once again with another wordless book that tells the incredible adventure of a young boy who goes on a field trip to the Empire State Building. The imaginative and creative young boy yearns to express his creativity meanwhile he is approached by a friendly cloud that takes for a tour of Sector 7 where clouds are created for this portion New York City. Sector 7 resembles an old train station with departure and arrival times posted which provide clouds with their assigned locations. The boy encounters clouds that are bored with their usual shapes. With a wild imagination and skilled artistry, he designs inspiring shapes that excite the clouds. When the staff discovers the changes, they are perturbed by the clouds that stray from their usual and regimented routines. The boy is sent back to his class field trip. However there is no undoing the chaos he has created which begins to spread out across Sector 7.

Evaluation: David Wiesner's Caldecott Honor award winning book allows readers to create the text and interpretations within their minds. Wiesner's wordless tale captures your mind with its full page watercolor illustrations and story board formatted frames. The vivid, yet soft watercolor illustrations provide humor combined with elegance. Readers can create their own individual stories based on their personal experiences. The main character is wildly imaginative with a talent for skilled artistry. Wiesner's tale leaves readers wondering if there are depots like Sector 7 where imaginative clouds are created. Educators will find that this tale allows children to create their own words to this magical adventure. It will encourage struggling writers to utilize their imaginations and picture themselves in the boy's position and be able to write a terrific tale of visiting the place where clouds are made. Children ages 6-10 will love this enchanting journey.

My 5 year old loves this book and wants to read it a couple of times a week. He always asks new questions as he points out things he hadn't discovered last time. Even telling this story (since there are no words) changes each time as you(as the reader) will surely discover more things as well.

Book Description

What will it cost to keep a promise? Of the four people at the Newpointe post office when the bomb went off, three were killed instantly. The fourth, a five-year-old boy, lies comatose in the hospital and might not survive. Who would do such a thing? The answer comes in the form of a gunman crashing through the door of the hotel room where Jill Clark is staying. With a rifle barrel pointed at her temple, the young attorney suddenly finds herself the hostage of a desperate man whose actions hardly fit his claim that he's innocent of the bombing. Only later, when the suspect is behind cars, does Jill wonder whether he's as guilty as he appears. Prompted by a terrifying attempt on her life, Jill and old flame Dan Nichols dig deeper into the case. But standing in their way lies an obstacle Jill hasn't counted on: the power of a covenant. It could change her life. Or, with the clock ticking, it could seal her death. Word of Honor it book three in the Newpointe 911 series by award-winning novelist Terri Blackstock. Newpointe 911 offers taut, superbly crafted novels of fear, faith, and close-knit, small town relationships, seasoned with romance and tempered by insights into the nature of relationships, redemption, and the human heart. Well, honestly, I have never read a Terri Blackstock book I didn't like so could not have given this anything other than five stars. She cannot write them fast enough for me and my family. She's a great author with great faith and we hope for many more of her mysteries to entertain us in the future!!

5 out of 5 stars Great series!.......2006-01-30

This is a great series and the characters and definitely the type that you won't forget! The main characters are all firefighters, or related/connected to firefighters. There is a very strong suspense plot that goes throughout the entire series. While the book has its dark moments, it is a good Christian suspense with both the plot and the spiritual journey

1 out of 5 stars A soap opera, not a mystery.......2005-06-29

Word of Honor was so poorly written that I found it hard to finish the book. Instead of telling the story through one character, the author jumped from one character to another not allowing the reader to identify with any of the characters. Reading Word of Honor was more like watching TV instead of reading a book. The conversations between the characters were corny. I felt like I was watching a poorly written TV soap opera. The Christian message was dominant and preachy instead of being informative. The Christian message seemed forced instead of a natural part of the story line. If I wanted a book that preaches along with a good story line, there are many good books out there that are much better written, ie the BIBLE!

5 out of 5 stars Proof that Terri Blackstock knows her stuff!.......2004-01-30

I would have to say that Terri Blackstock has shown her abilities as a writer once again in this book. She has demonstrated an absolutely excellent writing ability when it comes to this whole series! I greatly enjoyed "Word of Honor," and some of the themes of a covenant that were so prevalent in this book that I think are oftentimes overlooked so easily in our society. Mind you, I think there are a couple of points in which priorities lose their place in this book, but I also believe that they are restored before the end. I enjoy the murder mystery that is held in the story of one man's faithfulness to God, his family, and his friend. I also really enjoy the story behind Jill and Dan and all the struggles of their relationship while they're still so on and off. Most of all, I love the Christ-centered theme of all of Terri Blackstock's books. This is one sister in Christ who really knows how to write 'em!

5 out of 5 stars As Always- GREAT!.......2003-06-12

This book was probably my favorite out of Blackstock's Newpoint 911 Series - the suspensful story of lawyer Jill, and firefighter Dan fighting to protect their lives makes for a great read! I would recommend this to all- as well as the other books in this series! :)

4 out of 5 stars Positivity Never Hurt.......2007-07-03

Hal Urban's follow up to Life's Greatest Lessons is a powerful, yet simple book that takes all of the complex, academic jargon out of his subject, and offers readers a chance to create a new paradigm, by doing something as simple as changing their speech.
Urban's book is chock full of feel good messages and warm fuzzies. No doubt this will turn off some of the more sophisticated and complicated readers; however, positivity is good for you, a little positivity never hurt.
His book has five parts, ending with a summary and a conclusion. The most enjoyable chapter in the whole book, in my opinion, is chapter ten: Funny Words Make Us Laugh, from part two. I actually enjoyed reading the book so much, I read it twice. I gave it four stars, though, because Urban's style can come across, at times, as being a little simplistic.

1 out of 5 stars urbane but stupendous ignorance, sold as profit.......2007-01-16

How can I take seriously an "expert" who devotes pages 5 and 6 of his book to trying to convince us that the Phoenicians invented talking? Does Mr. Urban really believe what he tells his readers - that, until a mere of thousand years ago when the Phoenicians came along, humankind communicated purely by drawing pictures and letting loose the occasional wordless grunt?
It simply did not happen that way - ask any linguist, archeologist, or historian
The author of this work also misleads his readers on the origin of the word "phonics." Contrary to his assertion, it doesn't have to do with the word "Phoenician" at all. Checking "phonics" and "Phoenician" in any dictionary which gives word-origins will confirm that.
I'd rather fail to communicate at all than communicate false-to-fact information, even for the vast sums that Hal Urban claims he makes from selling his inaccuracies to corporations and the general public.

mmm I think the gentlemen from Kenosha, WI was looking for some languistic book. that teaches him nice words you can say ... this book is not the case.. this book teaches you how to reach out and look for the positive, how to avoid the typical : hi .. how you doing .. good... and end of conversation. This book is one of the better books i've read and it goes along with hal urban's Life's greatest lessons : 20 things...

5 out of 5 stars Should Be Mandatory Reading for home, school, business.........2005-01-30

In today's vast realm of self-help, self-improvement, communications, human relations, business, prosperity-creating publications, Hal Urban's book stands out as an effective, concise, refreshingly readable reminder of the title's profoundly important message, which is actually the bedrock of any and all of the above subjects. It is like a gentle but much needed slap in the face to bring us all back into line and the higher standard of being consciously civilized, intelligent, and yes, loving human beings. Our culture more than ever needs to remember, acknowledge, cultivate and practice the wisom and commom sense conveyed here so simply and succinctly. Keep a copy; give another (at least one) away. Thank you, Mr. Urban, for writing this book!

Hold on tight, because bestselling author Nelson DeMille has combined three of his supersonically charged thrillers into one megasized edition. Each of the novels, Word of Honor, Cathedral, and By the Rivers of Babylon, is very different in plot, but clearly patented by DeMille's distinctive fingerprints: a fascination for 20th-century politics, a high level of human interest, and ongoing clashes of good versus evil.

In Word of Honor, Vietnam veteran Ben Tyson is accused of committing a heinous wartime crime. As his reputation and his inner spirit are battered, Ben must fight the biggest battle of his life.

Cathedral takes place on St. Patrick's Day, in New York City. A renegade I.R.A. group seizes a huge cathedral, along with the worshippers inside. As the hours pass and the tension mounts, the fate of the hostages does not look good.

Finally, the hotly contested Arab-Israeli conflict serves as the nucleus of inspiration for By the Rivers of Babylon. When two Concorde jets crash-land in the desert, the passengers (all peace ambassadors) must battle it out with an army of Palestinian commandos. The final showdown is an appropriately dramatic finish to DeMille's Three Complete Novels. --Naomi Gesinger

Book Description

I read all three of these novels, for the first time, quite a while ago. The plots were so well planned and his ability to convey actions, thoughts, etc., etc. is outstanding. He is one of those authors that REALLY can make you 'live' the story. He has 'depth' in his writing. I believe these 'older' novels are three of his very best. I have read these novels twice and plan to read them again after an interval of a couple of years. I can't imagine anyone regretting buying this book! If you only like the Quick Reads, these are not for you. These novels, you 'soak in' and wish for them to go on and on and on.

5 out of 5 stars Words to Remember.......2007-01-10

Our son had this album and accidentally left it at our house. We listened to it out of curiosity and were blown away. Since then we have given several as gifts, one to a first year American history teacher in a local middle school. We kept one for ourselves and plan to order many more for giving away. Thank you for this wonderful compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Real History Lesson.......2002-11-12

This CD REALLY opened my eyes! The performance of the reader and the power of the music brought the words to life. I FINALLY understood the time & conflict our founding fathers went thru.

I wish they had presented this to me when I was in school! All I can remember was the Boston Tea Party was against taxes & the Constitution was a really successful intellectual experiment.

I've been loaning it to friends & have had trouble getting it back. They love to listen to it while driving, etc. Its very inspiring & uplifting

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must have" for everyone who values freedom........2002-09-13

Words of Freedom: Men of Honor is a gripping dramatic rendering of historic American documents and quotes that timelessly inspires the whole world not just Americans. I would recommend this CD to any student, to any history buff, or even to anyone who has not studied History for years. I hope you find this program as thought provoking, alive, and entertaining, as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Great series of books grouped together.......2007-06-06

My favorite author puts together a great trio of books. My all time favorite Charm School brings you back to the cold war days wondering how this hasn't been made into a movie. Plum Island is more current, but one of the more exciting and thrilling efforts of DeMille. Lastly Word of Honor is in the middle (chronologically) and is one of his "sleeper" titles that you will truly enjoy.

This is a great value at this price.
