In The Sacred Romance, authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge inspire readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life," this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover," attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blind the believer and prevent him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life can soon become empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls. A follow-up book, The Journey of Desire, was written by John Eldredge after Brent Curtis's tragic death. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

The God who saves is also a God who woos His own to a relationship primarily of the heart. As we draw closer to Him, we must choose to let go of other "less-wild lovers," such as perfectionistic driveness and self-indulgence. Eldredge and Curtis identify the lies offered by "false loves" and instruct us on the journey back to the Lover of our souls. In carefully crafted words and images, the authors entice the reader to his or her own journey of the heart, promising, "It is possible to recover the lost life of our heart and with it the intimacy, beauty, and adventure of life with God."

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for any Christian.......2007-06-18

See my review for the study guide because this is a great study to do with a group of people. Eye opening to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Fulfilling.......2007-03-30

This book really spoke to me and opened my heart to a whole new world: that perhaps God really wants to know us deeply and to love us as a lover does. The idea that we are His children, created by Him, and that we are glorious creatures marred by sin, that our hearts are new and good things once we accept Christ, are crazy ideas in the modern church, but these ideas hold up in scripture. This book has really helped me become closer to God, and closer to His true desire for my life: to live a great adventure with Him. I HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Romance.......2007-01-05

I first read the book, which has profoundly and positively affected my spiritual life. In all of my readings on this subject over the years, nothing ever has put the love of God in such a relevant context. I am now re-reading the book and doing the accompaning workbook which I recommend as well. I highly recommend the book especially for those who are interested in developing a or strenghening their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Wildly Profound and Inspirational.......2006-11-20

All of us spend our lives with a desire for something more, either buried deep within our hearts or just below the surface. This book reveals what that something more is and how we both draw close to it and away from it. The authors' insights into the causes of both our joys and our miseries are nothing short of revelation. This is not a "feel good" kind of book. It does not tell us that everything will be all right if we just have faith. It explores the harsh realities of life and the glorious possibilities of our God given destiny of a life in communion with Him.

I found myself moved to the core of my being, both laughing and crying at the same time as the words of this book cut straight to the center of what my life has been missing all along. This book is not a straight-forward outline of premises though. It is a journey with God. If your heart is not open to mystery of that journey, if it is not hungry for that something more, if it does not feel something missing, then it will not be open to the message of this book. I recommend picking it up when you are at a point in your life when you find yourself hurting, lonely, lost or numb and wondering where God is and why He doesn't just make the pain go away.

1 out of 5 stars New revelation, new spirituality.......2006-10-30

First of all, this book mentions "the heart" and strays from the truth of scripture terribly. God's word says the "heart is deceitful above all things and who can know it?" There is nothing good in our hearts, apart from Christ, and whatever "good" there might be in there comes from Him. Scripture tells us that in the last days the church will go into apostasy. This time has come like no other time before. There is a move to to throw out scripture and move past it, ignoring what God has already told us. What we need to know is in scripture--especially those things we need to know about Him and what He requires of us. This move in the church today to "feel" God and go "to a deeper level" is a reawakening of mysticism which does not belong in the body of Christ. The truth and objectives of scripture are not mystical, for a reason. Jesus Christ was and is not a mystic. This movement is called "contemplative spirituality" and it is subtle and dangerous. Sadly, even Eldredge has taken this route. How many more good authors and great men of God are going to forsake the completeness of God's word to turn inward to "self" and think they will find something new? Solomon said, "there is nothing new under the sun." The devil wants us to think we can reinvent and invent "new" outside of God's marvelous confines. We need to stick to scripture and stop reading books like these written by men who want to offer us something more than the Lord commanded us. We are treading on shaky ground, but all we need is His glorious word and to do what He said: "Keep my commandments."

Sacred Games is a novel as big, ambitious, multi-layered, contradictory, funny, sad, scary, violent, tender, complex, and irresistible as India itself. Steep yourself in this story, enjoy the delicious masala Chandra has created, and you will have an idea of how the country manages to hang together despite age-old hatreds, hundreds of dialects, different religious practices, the caste system, and corruption everywhere. The Game keeps it afloat.

There are more than a half-dozen subplots to be enjoyed, but the main events take place between Inspector Sartaj Singh, a Sikh member of the Mumbai police force, and Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. It is no accident that Ganesh is named for the Hindu god of success, the elephant god much revered by Hindus everywhere. By the world's standards he has made a huge success of his life: he has everything he wants. But soon after the novel begins he is holed up in a bomb shelter from which there is no escape, and Sartaj is right outside the door. Ganesh and Sartaj trade barbs, discuss the meaning of good and evil, hold desultory conversations alternating with heated exchanges, and, finally, Singh bulldozes the building to the ground. He finds Ganesh dead of a gunshot wound, and an unknown woman dead in the bunker along with him.

How did it come to this? Of course, Singh has wanted to capture this prize for years, but why now and why in this way? The chapters that follow tell both their stories, but especially chronicle Gaitonde's rise to power. He is a clever devil, to be sure, and his tales are as captivating as those of Scheherezade. Like her he spins them out one by one and often saves part of the story for the reader--or Sartaj--to figure out. He is involved in every racket in India, corrupt to the core, but even he is afraid of Swami Shridlar Shukla, his Hindu guru and adviser. In the story Gaitonde shares with Singh and countless other characters, Vikram Chandra has written a fabulous tale of treachery, a thriller, and a tour of the mean streets of India, complete with street slang. --Valerie Ryan

Questions for Vikram Chandra

After writing his first two, critically acclaimed books, Red Earth and Pouring Rain and Love and Longing in Bombay, Vikram Chandra set off on what became, seven years later, an epic story of crime and punishment in modern Mumbai, Sacred Games. Chandra splits his time between Berkeley, where he teaches at the University of California, and Mumbai, the vast city that becomes a character in its own right in Sacred Games. We asked him a few questions about his new book.

Amazon.com: Did you imagine your book would become such an epic when you began it?

Vikram Chandra: No, not at all. When I began, I imagined a conventional crime story which began with a dead body or two, proceeded along a linear path, and ended 300 pages later with a neatly-wrapped solution. But when I began to actually investigate the particular kind of crime that I was interested in, a series of connections revealed themselves. Organized crime is of course connected to politics, both local and national, but if you're interested in political activity in India today--and elsewhere in the world--you are of course going to have to address the role of religion. These realms, in turn, intersect with the workings of the film and television industries. And all of this exists within the context of the "Great Game," the struggle between nation-states for power and dominance; some of the criminal organizations have mutually-beneficial relationships with intelligence agencies. So, I became really interested in this mesh of interlocking lives and organizations and historical forces. I began to trace how ordinary people were thrown about and forced to make choices by events and actors very far away; how disparate lives can cross each other--sometimes unknowingly--and change profoundly as a result. The form of the novel grew from this thematic interest, in an attempt to form a representation of this intricate web. The reader will, I hope, by the end of the novel see how the connections fall together and weave through each other. The individual characters, of course, see only a fragmented, partial version of this whole.

Amazon.com: You interviewed many gangsters, high and low, to research your story. How did you get introductions to them? What did they think of someone writing their life?

Chandra: When I was writing my last book, Love and Longing in Bombay (in which Sartaj Singh first appears), I had contacted some police officers and crime journalists. I stayed in touch with a few of them, and when I began to think seriously about this project I asked them to introduce me to anyone who could tell me something about organized crime. Amongst the people I met in this way were some people from the "underworld," which turns out not to be an underworld at all. It's the same world we live in, inhabited by human beings who are very much like the rest of us, even in their distinctiveness. For the most part, they were as curious about me and what I was doing as I was about them. They're not big novel readers, but they had very certain opinions about representations of their lives they had seen on the big screen: "Such-and-such film got it all wrong"--they would tell me--"don't do that." And, "This was correct, that was not." So I listened, and I hope I got it mostly right.

Amazon.com: For most American readers--like me--your story is full of slang and cultural references that we can't hope to follow. For me that's part of the charm--I feel like I'm immersed in a world I don't fully understand. Were you thinking of a particular audience as you wrote?

Chandra: I wanted to use the English that we actually speak in India, the language that I would use to tell this story if I were sitting in a bar in Mumbai talking to a friend. This English would be sprinkled with words from many Indian languages, and we would share a universe of cultural referents and facts that a reader from another country wouldn't recognize instantly. This, of course, is an experience that all of us have in a very various world. I remember reading British children's stories as a kid, and having long discussions with friends about what "crumpets" and "clotted cream" could possibly be. An Indian reader reading a novel about Arizona by an American writer might have no idea what a "pueblo" was, or why you went to a "Circle-K" to get a bottle of milk. But the context tells you something about what is being referred to, and there is a distinct delight in discovering a new world and figuring out its nuances. This is one of the great gifts of reading, that it can transport you into foreign landscapes. It's one of the reasons I read books from other cultures and places, and I hope American readers will share in this pleasure.

Amazon.com: Your book has dozens of characters who could live in books of their own. Aside from your two main figures, the policeman Sartaj Singh and the criminal Ganesh Gaitone, which was your favorite character to write?

Chandra: That would have to be Sartaj's mother, Prabhjot Kaur, as a young girl in pre-Partition India, I think. She's curious, innocent, and passionate; writing that chapter was hard and exhilarating.

Amazon.com: The movies of Bollywood (and Hollywood) are everywhere in your story, and many in your family (and you yourself) have been screenwriters and directors. For someone new to Indian film, what are some of your favorites you'd recommend?

Chandra: A very small sampling from the '50s onwards might be: Pyaasa (Thirst, 1957); Kaagaz ke Phool ("Paper Flowers," 1959); Mughal-e-Azam ("The Great Mughal," 1960); Sholay ("Embers," 1975); Parinda ("Bird," 1989); Satya (1998); Lagaan ("Land Tax," 2001); Lage Raho Munnabha ("Keep at it, Munnabhai," 2006).

Book Description

Seven years in the making, Sacred Games is an epic of exceptional richness and power. Vikram Chandra's novel draws the reader deep into the life of Inspector Sartaj Singh—and into the criminal underworld of Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India.

Sartaj, one of the very few Sikhs on the Mumbai police force, is used to being identified by his turban, beard and the sharp cut of his trousers. But "the silky Sikh" is now past forty, his marriage is over and his career prospects are on the slide. When Sartaj gets an anonymous tip-off as to the secret hide-out of the legendary boss of G-Company, he's determined that he'll be the one to collect the prize.

Vikram Chandra's keenly anticipated new novel is a magnificent story of friendship and betrayal, of terrible violence, of an astonishing modern city and its dark side. Drawing inspiration from the classics of nineteenth-century fiction, mystery novels, Bollywood movies and Chandra's own life and research on the streets of Mumbai, Sacred Games evokes with devastating realism the way we live now but resonates with the intelligence and emotional depth of the best of literature.

5 out of 5 stars All these irritating reminders from other readers.......2007-10-03

about Indian culture and language, etc...
This book could be written anywhere, anytime about any culture. If you see it like that there's a whole lot less to "figure out."

Chandra is an amazing writer in that he transcends his time but keeps himself completely in his work--meaning his "self," his whole life is still in it, so I suppose you could say it's Indian in that way, but, as all writers who survive the centuries seem to do, Chandra makes the book human, so that it appeals throughout the ages. We see the characters, suffering, falling in love, rutting, eating, dying, desiring, lusting, full of greed, dazzled by the ordinary, all the things that make us human, the feelings that make us human, too many to render here, but they are captured perfectly in each and every one of Chandra's works.

So, yes, this book is very good and you should read it.

2 out of 5 stars Most boring thriller in...the whole world.......2007-09-20

Look, this book is not bad reading in terms of the writing? Does that make sense? In any case, I was kind of hoping for something that would be all zig-zaggy and page turning. Chandra is a good writer but the whole story is not super interesting.
This sounds like a contradiction, but that might be the point. It's like a great car running on bad gas.
So, don't look for a thriller, or even a police crazy. It's like an NPR thriller. Terry Gross...why did you kill my teacher? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Games is a wonderful book.......2007-09-17

At this moment, I'm only about half way through this long and wonderful book, but India and all the marvelous characters come alive each time I open it. I hope it never ends.

1 out of 5 stars Over the top.......2007-09-12

The title, first of all, in no way has anything to do with the bulk, and I mean BULK, of this book. This book should have been edited and re-edited to 400 pages. The repetitiveness of character descriptions were boring and I kept wanting to say, Hey, I got it! The Hindu language is wholly unfamiliar to me and the glossary was of very little help. However, I learned how to swear in Hindi just by reading the first 50 pages.

The ending was flat and uninspiring with an extra chapter tossed in that had nothing to do with the preceding 875 pages! An epic novel? This doesn't come close to anything that Clavell, Edw. Rutherford or Robert Elegant has written. I'm disappointed that I wasted so much time on plowing through this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Into the Unknown.......2007-09-11

Reviews of this monumental work have deservedly been overwhelmingly favorable. The writing is so evocative and the stories so engrossing that the reader almost wishes it were longer than the 1000 pages it is. Many reviews have claimed it as an accurate and informative picture of modern India. I can't substantiate that; I have no idea what India, or any facet of it, is like. This book may indeed reflect life in the Mumbai underworld, what goes on in the minds of semi-crazed religious fanatics, how the secret services operate - I don't know. But it's irrelevant. The world(s) Chandra explores and dissects are worthy in themselves, and the characters are the range of human goodness and frailty that make this a novel well worth the time and effort it demands.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Textbook.......2007-10-05

This book was a quick read, since there are many full page illustrations. I have revisited the book often, and consider it a valuable resource for years to come.
I admit to being skeptical when I purchased Steve Murray's products: How could a Reiki Master justify passing the secret Reiki symbols on to the general public? But I feel that we live in different times now. To coin a phrase by Caroline Myss, there are now many "Mystics without monasteries." I am grateful that Steve has made attaining higher levels of Reiki practice available to those who cannot afford to go the traditional route.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-09-18

Here's my story. I didn't want to get any of his books or dvds. I read some of the reviews from other Master's and they talked badly about his teachings and how an attunement could not be done by watching a crystal on dvd. But, later i remembered having a dream when i was younger of watching myself staring at a crystal on tv. I thought it was freaky and didn't know what it meant, but then it all came together. So i started off with his first reiki book, the psychic attunement, and the reiki level one attunement. I had better results than i thought i was going to get. I have a natural gift for healing and i've been using it un-trained my whole life. His books and dvds helped me out a lot. This is the real thing and if you are new and looking to try reiki, i highly recommend it. I don't write reviews and Steve Murray is the first review i've ever written on. This is because i want people to know that this is real and powerful. The DVD's are powerful and the books explain it all and enforce all that is Imparted to you. By the way, I am a Christian and you should know that Reiki has no religion. I recommend all the DVD attunements, and i've read the first 3 Reiki volume set and the false beliefs. I will be getting more of his books and teaching. But i hope that this review and his works help you like it's helped me in my entire life and the people around me. I've healed things from headaches and back pains, to two different friends that were in the hospital death bed, one with severe kidney failure and the other had AIDS and i helped bring his status down to a controlled HIV status. Both were overnight. night saying it will work like that for everybody, but know that it will work in it's own way, some way. Be blessed all who read this.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guide Indeed........2007-09-05

I specially recomend this book if you have recently received your Reiki Master attunement or plan to do so. Nearly half the book is dedicated to the attunement process for levels 1, 2, Master, Healing and Psychic. Contains valuable information and it is easy to read and understand. It's a great book for my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-19

Not to repeat what has already been said but I just want to add my support to the positive reviews. I too read the reviews here before purchasing. I visited his website and came back here because Amazon always has the best deals. I took a leap of faith. The book is the foundation for the attunements. It is very clear and personalizes the Reiki Master who is giving you the attunements. I wouldn't do the attunement without having read the corresponding part in the book. You have to know what you have to know. The DVDs worked for me. I totally support this method and will continue on. I know there are different strokes for different folks but I gave it a chance it paid off. Actually, it paid off big time considering how much others charge for the same. I am extremely grateful to Steve Murray. He is a special and gifted guy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-08-09

I would like to thank Steve Murray for providing these Reiki attunement programs. I have received 1st and 2nd degree from his products and also from a live class. The experiences were very different but both were wonderful. I have not been able to raise the $1,000 required for my Masters Attunement from the organization that I received my live 1st and 2nd from but Steve has made it very affordable to receive the attunement. I have read some of the reviews and see that one or two have been upset because they didn't feel anything. I don't know what they expected to feel but Steve does explain that if you can't feel anything it does not mean that you did not receive the attunement. I have definitely been able to tell that I have received the Master Attunement even though I didn't "feel" that much while receiving the attunement.

I definitely recommend that anyone taking his attunements also read his Ultimate Guide Trilogy. They are so packed with information about Reiki that I feel so much more prepared to be a Reiki healer than I did prior to reading them. They are truely wonderful and his A Reiki 1st, Aura and Chakra DVD is very helpful in showing you how to perform your own attunements. Reiki False Beliefs Exposed is very good in answering questions you might have about things you have heard about Reiki and setting the record straight in many areas. I also have had Steves Psychic attunement and the wonderful thing about his programs is that you can take them over and over again and that is something you can't do with a live attunement. Of course, you need to follow Steve's cautions in waiting three days between pschic attunements. I believe that taking the Reiki Healer attunements over and over can continue to improve my abilities to be a better healer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Call to Holiness.......2007-10-05

The great thing about this book is that it specifically addresses some common areas that all married couples are likely to struggle with, but it ties them back to the Bible and the call for all of us to lead holy lives. The Bible doesn't say, "Be holy if your spouse is holy," but God says, "Be holy because I am holy." It is the relationship with God that is central. We are called to be ever seeking to emulate Christ, and the marriage relationship gives us plenty of opportunity! Now, of course if you are in an abusive relationship, use appropriate judgement, but if you are finding yourself in a dissatisfying marriage for other reasons, remember that instead of changing your spouse, the place to begin is with YOURSELF! God bless!

5 out of 5 stars instructions we must understand and obey.......2007-09-08

For men: page 41 reminds us that Jesus told us to love our enemies. A man who does not love (seek what is good for) his wife is a man who does not act like a Christian.

For women: page 43 says A wife who plans an unforgettable sexual experience for her husband is serving God.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-06

This book has been very helpful in preparing for my upcoming marriage. Its biggest influence is that it has given me a perspective that I would have never thougth of on my own. That we do marriage "work" for God. Improving our marriages and our own attiudes is a direct reflection on God in our lives. This book is general and broad and does not give enough specifics so I look forward to reading more on the subject. Yet, I do find myself reflecting on several points Thomas makes. I recommend it to anyone wanting to find the correlation between God and marriage.

4 out of 5 stars Best book on marriage.......2007-08-24

I am a pastor, and this is the best book my wife and I have found on what Christian marriage is all about. It is our primary text when counseling engaged couples. We have also used it with small groups. We highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read" book!.......2007-07-27

Gary Thomas set out on a mission to teach us about marriage and its implications. Mission accomplished! This book teaches us so much: it teaches us to look at our partners as image-bearers of God; it teaches us, "every difficulty in life is an opportunity for spiritual advancement"; it teaches us, "the more difficult something is, the more spiritually beneficial we will find it to be, as it builds our character." Of course, there is much much more to be mined from this work. I wish I could get the words around how this book will impact how you view marriage... read this book! Apply what it teaches to your heart and marriage, and you will be blessed.

If you are a man (i.e. husband or future husband), I would definitely recommend reading this in conjunction with Bob Lepine's The Christian Husband.

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

This acclaimed spiritual masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings ever written. A manual for life and death and a magnificent source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition, The Tibetan Book Of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation, to the nature of mind, to karma and rebirth, to compassionate love and care for the dying, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book........2007-10-04

"Just as if you put your finger into water, it will get wet, and if you put it into fire, it will burn, so if you invest your mind in the wisdom mind of the Buddha, it will transform into their wisdom nature."

Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.

It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.

On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.

5 out of 5 stars First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02

I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.

A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!

Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)

Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23

This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-05-21

A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.

It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.

5 out of 5 stars the tibetan book of living and dying.......2007-05-14

I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.

Book Description

This best-selling introduction to world religions is ideal for readers with no previous exposure to the subject. Offering accurate, comparative descriptions of a broad range of religions, it gives background material on religious theory and study, while exploring living religions in terms of the historical and cultural factors that produced them. The book concentrates on the lives of the founders of different religions, their basic teachings, and their current status in the world. Unlike other books, Religions of the World includes chapters on Native American and African religions as well as the “smaller” text-based religions, such as Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, and Baha'i. An excellent reference work for those involved in religion and the study of religion, including those involved in marketing for various religious publications, videos, etc.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great introductory text on world religions.......2007-09-12

I have read the chapters on the religions of India (including Islam) and Baha'ism as part of a study abroad course on Indian religions. As a survey of world religions, this may well be the best textbook I've seen so far, and I have looked at a few in my day. It is readable, but also thorough. In addition to reviewing the basic information I've learned before, I found myself coming across little details that I'd never known (like that Mahavira's original name was Nataputta Vardhamana, or that the cause of the Buddha's death was a meal of spoiled pork curry).

The best thing about this book, though, are the passages of primary texts both within and at the end of each chapter. Though sometimes challenging to read, as ancient scripture often is, these selections really captured a lot of the basic character of each faith and supported what was being presented in the chapters.

As an introductory text on world religions, I would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars From One Instructor to Another . . ........2004-08-30

I use this text to teach my college class on World Religions (REL 101). It is a nice little text. As with all works it has some advantages and some disadvantages.

ADVANTAGES:

1. An Instructor's Manual With Tests is available. I don't use most of the tests because I prefer class participation and lots of written papers, but the manual helps me keep on target and helps me design questions for class discussion time.

2. A free multimedia cd "The Sacred World" is available to instructors who mass order the text. This is a $60 value and contains 60 short video clips. I like to use these to add accent to class times.

3. The text itself is well written and time tested (This is the 9th edition). It is easy for the student to read. I usually expect them to read the chapters and be prepared for discussion. My lectures bring additional material to the class.

4. All in all these materials are easy to teach from.

DISADVANTAGES:

1. As one can read from previous reviews, the text has limited depth. It must be assumed that the instructor will have the capability to bring additional material to the classroom.

2. The book contains a huge gap in its lack of a chapter on "New Age" religions. This needs to be corrected as any casual trip to a book store will affirm. I usually add the following topics to those which the book covers:
a. Atheistic philosophies
b. The advent of the post modern mind
c. New age religion

5 out of 5 stars Good Book for An Introduction To Religions.......2004-08-23

I have been using Hopfe's book since the fourth edition, and I have found it to be very useful and reliable in my classes. The book shows an awareness of the nuances relevant to the various topics (including definition, contra the claim by a previous reviewer who didn't seem to read past the first page) and Woodward's updating and website keep the book up to date. Yes, the glossary could be more extensive, but I tend to work from the book and not just within the confines of the book (as I'm sure the other reviewer does as well), so this is not a serious impediment. Many more terms are defined in the text than appear in the glossary. A nice little book.

5 out of 5 stars The only book on the subject that I have read.......2003-04-17

The book does a good job of explaining major religions without getting caught up in issues of faith.
It would be nice to know the authors personal religious beliefs, in order to confirm a suspected bias. Their beliefs are not listed in the book. I found it odd that in the Christian chapter, it is not mentioned the trinity or that Christians believe Jesus is God.

More color pictures would be nice. Many words are missing from the glossary and the index, such as "li". The authors use lots of words that the common person doesn't know such as pantheon/patheon?, monastic, etc...

1 out of 5 stars The Mind of a Pocket Calculator.......2001-10-31

Typical of many academic types, Hopfe explains away that which he has no experience with. In this instance, it results in a lifeless mind explaining away world religions, one by one. E.g. the first sentence in the introduction is Webster's definition of religion. One would gather the impression that world religions were the result of a manufacturing process - one similar to the manner in which this book is written - with all the truth and sensitivity of a .45 caliber handgun. If what you want is a kind of macabre vivisection, I suggest Stephen King - he's much better.

Book Description

This English translation of the Qur'an is a compilation of the Muslim faith's Final Revelation from God to mankind through the last Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon Him. The Qur'an has a wealth of information--both worldly wisdom and intellectual concepts--providing a code of life for humankind generally and Muslims in particular. Indeed, the Qur'an's miracle lies in its ability to offer something to non-believers and everything to believers. This edition is fully indexed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid translation, lacking in style.......2007-06-08

This translation of the Qur'an is marketed as a pure English translation without the Arabic or commentary by the translator - and it is exactly this. BUT, there were a few things about this book that I was unaware of when I bought it:
This translation by Yusuf Ali (a great translation by the way) was updated by someone other than him to fit "contemporary" language and style. That is, instead of "of Ye we asketh" it would say "we ask You." Also, it is not written in meter or "biblical" style, but rather in plain sentences like a novel. I feel that this takes away from the enjoyability of the text greatly.
Also, you may want to get a version with the Arabic side by side with the English. Technically, since God spoke to Muhammad in Arabic, to understand the true meaning of the Qur'an, you must know Arabic. It's good to have the "original" text in case you have a question so you can ask an Imam or scholarly Muslim who speaks Arabic and they can derive an answer from the true text rather than from the Anglicized version.

4 out of 5 stars Is there an objective review of this book???.......2007-04-28

I frankly don't give a damned about anyones religious opinion. All I want to know is if the book is easy to read, clear in its content, reasonably accurate in its interpretation. and a good value. I will make up my own mind about what I believe and if I am wrong, then God and I will sort it out at my judgement.

5 out of 5 stars Has its goods and bads.......2007-02-26

I set out to read the entire Koran but only finished one-third of it. At that point, most of what was being said was being said for at least the second time, and I really just wanted to get the gist of it. I think I did. I can see how it inspires terrorism, but I can also see how the Bible inspired the Inquisition, colonialism and the Ku Klux Klan. But I can ALSO see how both books inspire love and peace.

The Koran is just as beautiful AND ugly as all scriptures. You yourself can decide which parts are beautiful and which are ugly. Some parts will probably bring the entire thing down for you, but you'll find real truths in others. But you can say the same thing about a thousand other great literary works, even if they're by Shakespeare, Milton, Dante...

And just to say... One passage really stuck out. I wish I'd written it down. It said, basically, to live in peace with your neighbors(non-Muslims), but if they take your land, don't stop killing them until you get it back. I know they want Isreal, but I'd never heard their view put so simply. I hope I'm not misquoting it too badly!

Read it, if you're used to a demanding read. It's educational for being written from a non-Western point of view, it's poetic(my translation was, but it wasn't this one), and it's creating our history.

2 out of 5 stars a review of the reviews.......2007-02-09

All I want to know is if the book in questiob is an accurate translation of the Koran (Quran, whatever). There is way too much arguing and posturing in these reviews about the Koran in general and not enough discussion about the individual translation itself.

1 out of 5 stars Qur'an Translation lays forth in plain English some of the shocking and provocative "revelations" God allegedly gave Mohammed!!!.......2007-01-11

The Koran--or, the Qur'an (the recitation) as the Arabs call it--is believed by Muslims and diehard sheeple/believers to be the literal word of God as recited through Gabriel to Mohammed. However, the Koran--as demonstrated no better than in this post-911 world of incremented Muslim terrorism--has many, irreparable faults within, the chief one being that it's susceptible for the use of encouraging violence, brutality and terrorism!!!! There's a reason Osama is, sacrilegiously, a very popular name these days in the Muslim community and why the Muslim world in general scarcely protests against terrorism, or the extremists they claim only make up a "fraction" of their worshippers. The ordeal with Islam is that a larger-than-tolerable number of their practitioners believe that violence is essentially Islamic and Islamic terrorism is only religious terrorism and therefore true Islam. Aside from these already inexcusable sins of the Koran, there are also irrecoverable problems relating to misuse of science, inconsistency, historical inaccuracy and a failure of providing context for verses.

Because of all these flaws within the Koran, it's hazardously susceptible to misinterpretation by Islamic fascists and terrorists, something the Christian Bible, as an example, obviously isn't. That's why Christianity hasn't produced any extremists or fanatics who use the name of their God to kill, murder, dictate, terrorize, or otherwise harm other human beings.

The most infernal predicament with the Koran, not just extremist Islam, is that some of its own verses glorify and preach violence (leading to terrorism). One of the most infamous verses in the Koran appears to shamelessly endorse brutality, (2:194):

"The Sacred month for the sacred month and all sacred things are (under the law of) retaliation; whoever then acts aggressively against you, inflict injury on him according to the injury he has inflicted on you and be careful (of your duty) to Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil)."

This provocative verse glaringly endorses a revenge culture which, of course, dominates the minds of the Islamic terrorists who hate the West. The same sura where the above verse is featured also endorses that fighting for Allah isn't optional (2:216). Other verses implicating Islam as the opposite of the "religion of peace" include verse 4:95--which says that those who fight please Allah more than those who don't--and verse 9:19-20--which says that those who take up arms for Islam rank highest among believers!!!! The call to terrorism and violence in Koranic verses is by no means limited to these; these are just a couple of examples.

Another direly distressing feature of the Koran is its moral backsliding as practiced by Mohammed, which is a moral relapse based on the moral traditions of Judaism and Christianity and also just basic conscience. For instance, the Koran unabashedly and explicitly encourages supposedly "light" beatings to disobedient wives, with even Islamic scholars generally agreeing on this interpretation of verse 4:34. For the Muslim apologists in obstinate denial over Mohammed's endorsement of domestic violence and spousal abuse, the verse goes henceforth:

"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because God has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For God is Most High, great (above you all)."

By this staggeringly disquieting verse, we can see that amoral backsliding is advocated in the Koran; Judaism and Christianity have no such call to battery.

Other irremediably terminal dilemmas with Islam concern the intractable punishment of death for apostasy, the rejection of Islam by a believer; the stoning-to-death of adulterers, particularly women; the advocation of cutting off the hands of thieves; the death penalty for homosexuals; and permitting/advocating slavery. Islam has no defense against the charge it condones slavery since the "best" Islamo-apologists like John Esposito and Yusuf Ali do is admit Islam permits slavery, but also the "good treatment" of slaves!!!!

Aside from these morally distasteful encroachments by the Koran, it's also infected with historical irregularities versus what the Bible contains, but the arrogant Muslim believers justify this by denouncing the Bible as being blurred by human interference, which presumes the perfection of the Qoran. The science misused in the Koran is also unpardonable--confirming its primitive sickness--as some verses literally bait the reader into thinking the Earth is flat and that the moon gives off light instead of reflecting sunlight!

With all these irretrievably baneful ordeals in the Koran, it's no wonder that former jihadists like Walid Shoebat have had to RENOUNCE Islam and convert to Christianity to leave terrorism behind!!!! With all this putridness in the Koran, no hardline Muslim could become moderate!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite English Translation.......2007-08-23

I have read several translations of the Quran, and this is by far my
favorite. It is written beautifully and the commentaries are very
helpful. I highly recommend this version.

4 out of 5 stars Good translation but is it Yusuf Ali?.......2007-07-21

This is a pretty good translation (transliteration) well put together and a little easier to read than that of Pickthall and includes an exellent comentary to the text which I have to say, is prtty important as the Quran is a difficult book to read.

My only problem is that just how much of this transliteration and comentary is that of Yusuf Ali and how much of it has been revised, changed, altered etc...... Recent editions have been published in Saudi Arabia or with Saudi money with the title 'Revised edition' would be interesting to read the original.

3 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THESE CUSTOMER "REVIEWS".......2007-07-05

I have plowed through almost 60 of the (at this time) 69 "reviews" of this translation. SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE!

Amazon.com sometimes lets the "customer review" section become nothing more than a chat room for a bunch screeching polemicists who give no indication of having read the book being reviewed and who certainly give no useful information about it. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SECTIONS.

Continue only if your taste for screed, invective, and (yes) threats of physical violence is high.

If you wanted a review, this is NOT the place.

I came here because the paperback edition of this same translation was reviewed by one person as being inferior in print quality. If it is so, nobody here seems to care.

I suggest that you read the reviews at The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary

4 out of 5 stars The best Koran for somebody learning Arabic.......2007-02-16

The Arabic script is big enough to actually read! The choice of script is also good, in that it is not overy ornate and very much like that used in popular books for learning Arabic. There is also some interesting commentary that does not seem over the top.

5 out of 5 stars Error In Quran?.......2006-10-09

S18 v86 when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness."

This is to the error in quran ...................its is simple if you go to any beach and observed the sun you will see it setting in water(appearance) so it says in Quran that HE Zul-qarnain! found it set in a spring of murky water, it has nothing to do with creator and there is no mistake.

The Quran talks about Zul-qarnain not the shape of earth.

Read the Quran and find out shape of earth, creation of humans, plants, animals much much more. the Quran says there is not a quation that it can't answer if you have difficulty ask a muslim to help

There are more than 1000 verses in Quran dealing with science. challenge to any one to prove them wrong with proven scientific facts not assumptions

Other scriptures I could write a book, Atheism refer to the Quran you will find what, the term God means.

Four years after training with the old warrior he calls Socrates, and in spite of all he has learned, Dan Millman confronts personal failure and growing frustrations. Disillusioned with his life, unable to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, he sets out on a worldwide quest to rediscover his sense of purpose and source of inspiration. A buried memory sends him on a search for a woman shaman deep in a Hawaiian rain forest. She is the gateway to all his hopes and his fears — and only she can prepare him for what is to come. In worlds of shadow and light, he encounters inner tests, mortal challenges, disturbing revelations, and memorable characters in the most crucial quest of his life. I saw the movie first and THEN bought the books. I liked all of his books but this was by far my favorite-especially with the surprise ending. The former Olympian, Dan Millman, has an interesting way of blending truth and fantasy in his auto-biographical novels so that you don't know where the reality ends but this book is delightfully inspiring and hard to put down. His characters are so engaging that you almost feel as if you know them personally instead of second hand through his words. And as he heals himself you find strength gathering deep in your core. Hemmingway he isn't but can definitely give Dwyer, Chopra, Redfield and Quinn a run for their money.-
It seems like one always finds these types of books at a time one needs them most- but as his grandfather was fond of saying, "Nothing is coincidence."

1 out of 5 stars Love Millman, hated this book........2007-08-24

I have been a Dan Millman for over 20 years. I own almost all of his books, but this was by far the worst. If I had read this one 1st I never would have picked up another book by him.
This book goes too far into the "mystic" and "new age" side of his teachings. It was too far fetched for me. Minor details did not fit with what was written in "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior." One MAJOR thing was that "Joseph" comes back from the dead to make an appearance in this story. Not a vision - Joseph is alive and well and raising a family.
Everything else I have read by Dan, has inspired me to make changes in my life and try to improve, not so with this story.
It does have some insightful thoughts, but they are few and far between.
Finishing it was drudgery. Do yourself a favor, choose another title and let Dan inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars The Sacred Warrior review ~.......2007-08-11

I am currently enjoying the Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior. Although I have not ended the book, it is uplifting and fun reading for early mornings in the hot tub!!! It is somewhat spiritually uplifting and I appreciate that very much. I have other projects in the middle that is why the reading is going a little more slowly but in this way I can enjoy it a little more as well. Thank you for this review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Peaceful Warrior.......2007-05-21

I think what intrigues me most about Millman's work is the psuedosemi-autobiographical nature of the the stories he tells. The anecdotes that didn't actually happen drive home a very powerful point, and the anecdotes that did actually happen are just as amazing and world-view altering as the fiction.

In Sacred Journey, Millman shares with his readers another of his teachers on his path through life. Saturated with the wit, inspiration, and one-liners that so well established themselves in Peaceful Warrior, this book is expands upon his quest to enlightenment by focusing on the instructions of a wise Kahuna woman.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning about the journey of this peaceful warrior--one of many possible paths.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story!.......2007-01-10

This book really should only be read after you have read Way of the Peaceful Warrior. This one takes place sort of in the middle of the other. It states in the preface the exact page number where you could actually put the other book down, read this one, and then pick the other back up again and continue on. But, it is a great story and I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars "Starting with Moses & all the prophets.............2006-08-28

I own four JPS Torah commentaries; Genesis, exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Whilst written by Jewish scholars, they are a huge help to the Christian preacher and Bible study scholar. In depth knowledge of the language, and traditions offer fascinating, whilst sad insights to the Jewish interpretation of the Torah. I would recommend these books very highly to anyone with a strong faith in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. They, even unknowingly clearly point to him as the Saviour of the world.

We own a lot to the Jewish people, from whom Salvation comes.

4 out of 5 stars Be Advised, Speciality is Key.......2005-04-13

Because of the degree of specialty of each of the writers (each are specialists on the Law), a decent (at least some) amount of Hebrew knowledge is key, to allow the reader to evaluate decisions made by the authors. It is also key to remember that these commentaries (following after the aims of JPS) are thoroughly Jewish and track the development of understanding for the passages discussed, though not necessarily to the detriment of the series. A great work, worth the shelf space of any Rabbi, Preacher, or Scholar. rq ladonai kvd

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and thought provoking.......2000-12-06

Of the five commentaries in the JPS series on the first five books of the Bible, Milgrom's is the best.

Milgrom's commentary reveals a healthy respect for classical Jewish commentators but doesn't hesitate to address and add modern Biblical research. Milgrom excels when explaining the more obscure portions of Numbers, such as the rituals, calendars, and sacrifices. In addition to his verse by verse commentary, Milgrom adds lengthy excurses, exploring in more depth the issues raised in the commentary.

For example, his insights into the meaning of "tzitzit" - the fringes attached to four cornered garments - are outstanding. Milgrom argues that attaching the linen tzitzit with the dyed blue thread (techelet) to one's garment as required by the text, rendered the garment "shaatnez" - a forbidden combination of wool and linen. Milgrom notes that "shaatnez" is generally forbidden to be worn, but was permitted to be used in the construction of the Tabernacle and the clothing of the priests. By allowing, indeed requiring, every Israelite to attach shaatnez tzitzit to the corners of his/her garments, the Bible was drumming into the people the mandate that they be "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

Similarly, Milgrom's treatment of the paradox of the Red Cow, whose ashes purified those rendered impure by contact with the dead but rendered impure those who handled them is a tour de force of modern Biblical scholarship.

On almost every page, you will enjoy reading insights you may never before have come across. This book is a treasure for anyone willing to spend the time it requires.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide to "Numbers" yet available.......2000-10-17

Like all the volumes in the JPS Torah commentary series, this volume is simply the best in its area. It contains the complete Hebrew text of Genesis, the JPS's new English translation, and an extensive original commentary that illuminates the text like a 1000 watt searchlight. On average, each four or five lines of text gets a full page of explanation and commentary, so every subject gets covered in detail.

Like all the JPS Torah commentators, this work use of traditional rabbinic commentaries, and the Mishna, Midrash and Talmud. But it doesn't end here: The commentary goes on to make good use of literary analysis and comparative Semitics; intertextual commentary relating each book to other biblical books, and evidence from modern archaeological, discoveries.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent commentary on the Torah........1999-10-28

JPS Torah commentary is excellent. It has been an outstanding tool in my personal study of the Law. The scholarship is evident and the detailed comments provide great insight into the scriptures. Highly recommended for students of the Law.
