Where's the Beef?.......2007-05-01
Much looking forward to viewing this book, however, I was extremely disappointed. There was a lack of photos that showed how to do the exercises from start to finish. Too much info about the author and the Gracies, very little information about the workouts. I am sending this book back for a refund and because there is no option for "0" stars I had to rate it a "1".

Please see my review of the book. On its own, the book gets 3 stars and the DVD gets 4, but togeters, I give them 4 1/2 stars.

The Best MMA training around.......2006-04-28
My name is Adam Singer and I run a very sucessful gym in Athens GA. Maybe you know some of my fighters, Forrest Griffin (TUF 1 champ) and Rory Singer (TUF 3 star). I collect and read everything I can on strenght and conditioning. However until this book no expert had written specifically for MMA athletes. The first importatant thing to note is that everything in this book has been tested on MMA/BJJ athletes of the highest levels. What this book contains is a huge overview of every aspect of MMA training, mental, wieghts, strategy, nutrition, warmups, cutting wieght, lifting, cardio, core training etc etc etc. Is it a weekly program that one can follow? No. How could it be. The cookie cutter apraoch does not work with athletes. COnsider this a tool box that will allow you to work with yourself or your althetes to become the best they can be. For the individual that was upset about not having exercise descriptions....Why should Rooney waste time with things that have been covered in 100s of different places.
This is the first time I have reviewed a book on amazon. I have had this book from the first day I found it. I am writing a review now because I wanted to refute a couple negative reviews. I look at this book on a weekly basis and always find somehting new.

If you want to win.......2006-04-23
I have been training in martial arts for 19 years. I started competing at 19. I hold two black belts and have fight experience ranging from tai, kickboxing, boxing, mma, and bbj. Once I read this book, it gave me a clear cut guide on what to do mentaly and physically. Martin spells out the things you need to be a champ. I refrence the book all the time and currently are using to improve my mma and boxing. If you are openminded and want to win buy this book!!!
A must have for people looking to transform their approach to competition.......2006-04-22
Having over fifteen years of experience in the martial arts and nine years of experience in the field of strength and conditioning, "Training for Warriors" by Martin Rooney is a comprehensive guide on how to become a true warrior in realm of competition. This book adds to Martin's body of other training manuals and DVDs. The lessons learned from this manual and his other works are all interchangeable.
Martin's message is made clear to the reader in three ways. Firstly, the language used to communicate is simple and effective. Secondly, the material is able to be applied to different areas of performance enhancement. Lastly, Martin is clearly a "practice what you preach" practitioner. The reader will immediately know that Martin has been personally in the battle in which he is preparing you for.
I have recommended this book to many strength coaches and martial arts instructors, and I will continually recommend it to anyone who truly has the desire to become a warrior!

Bedrang the Stoat has his evil eyes set on ruling over his own empire, and will do anything to make sure that his ultimate fantasy is fulfilled. But little does he realize that the quiet, nameless mouse he is holding captive will one day turn out to be the heroic and fearless Martin the Warrior.
Brian Jacques uses the full force of his stunning storytelling talent to unravel the mystery and adventure that unfolds in this tale of Redwall as a quiet little mouse refuses to bow down to a tyrant and bids to fight for freedom at any cost. Brimming with cutthroat skullduggery and intellectual intrigue, Martin the Warrior is a mountainous tale that introduces the ethos and passions of Redwall with a host of well-drawn characters, each with their own Achilles' heel, making them feel as real as they are magical. --Susan Harrison

The best book in the series!.......2007-09-29
I pretty much said it all in the title! This book is awesome! It's got the most action, battles, and the coolest bad guys! It's great! Read this book!
nicolas's review.......2007-05-07
A fantastic story from the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior, is a mix of friendship and battles against a ruthless rat clan. This "National best seller" from Brian Jacques is about a mouse named Martin, who gets captured in the rat's prison. This story is full of foxes, lizards, moles, rats, and of course, mice. Most fantasy lovers and animal lovers will keep rereading this fantastic book about how friendship can help others in times of conflict. As most good stories are, all Brian Jacques books are well more than worth reading. And all animals have human characteristics.
One of the Greatest Books Ever Written.......2007-03-19
I have to admit that when I first heard of the Redwall series, I had my doubts. I mean, a book about animals? However, I decided to give them a chance and now they are my favorite books of all time.
Martin the Warrior is my favorite out of the series. I love how the characters interact with each other in a way that makes you want to be more like them. They stuck together through everything, and in the end the slaves were freed and the sword that once belonged to Luke was returned to it's rightful owner, Martin the Warrior.
I recommend this book, as well as the whole series to kids of all ages. If you like the Redwall books, you will probably also like Brian jacques' other series, the Castaway series.
Great series.......2006-10-18
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.
An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended.......2006-09-25
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.
Fans of Redwall will of course recognize Martin as the mouse that freed the woodlanders in Mossflower and passed on his sword in Redwall. The chance to read about Martin's life before coming to Mossflower should interest all fans of the series. The center of this book is Martin's coming of age as he changes from youth to an experienced warrior. He also sees his first glimpse of peace when he visits Noonvale with Rose, and it is that journey that will later inspire him to hang up his sword for good in Redwall. This prequel gives insight into Martin's character, his history, and what events created the freedom-loving, peace-desiring Warrior that plays such an important part in other books and remains at the heart of the entire Redwall series.
Martin the Warrior does a spectacular job dealing with war, peace, and factors that drive an individual towards one or the other. Character like Martin, Brome, and Felldoh run a full gamit from peaceful healer to righteous fighter to vengeful warrior, and the book forthrightly deals with issues such as war, death, and peace. Many of the other Redwall books take issues such as these for granted, and no where else in the series are they explored in such depth. These topics give the book great meaning, encourage thought about morals and justice, and create complex and meaningful characters and storylines, especially in the case of Martin.
Beyond these new aspects, the usual parts of a Redwall book are all present: unique and amusing character, good food, exciting journeys, evil enemies, large battles, cleverness, and a mixture of humor and fierce determination. Between two and three storylines run concurrently throughout the text, keeping the action moving along; Badrang and the secondary bad guy Clogg make for a challenging, ruthless enemy that the reader will love to hate. Above all, Martin is realistic, powerful character that is easy to love and to root for. Martin the Warrior is an enjoyable text to read and to reread, and one of the best of the Redwall novels. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
The period 1865-90 was one of unparalleled change in American frontier history. This span of 25 years witnessed the end of the traditional nomadic lifestyle of the plains Indians, the colonisation of the West by white settlers, and the first experience of the US army in fighting a form of irregular warfare for which its soldiers and commanders were untrained, and its equipment unsuited. That they acquitted themselves so well in the face of bureaucratic meddling, poor supply and appalling climatic conditions, speaks highly of the tenacity and physical toughness of the volunteers who served in the West.

The name Benedict Arnold survives today as a synonym for treachery. Author James Kirby Martin points out that Arnold's life, however, was not a simple black-and-white morality play--high-school textbook narratives to the contrary. Indeed, under different circumstances the American Judas might have gone down in history as the most revered military leader of the Revolutionary War, save George Washington. "His treason was shocking because of the magnitude of his contributions to the Revolutionary effort," writes Kirby, a professor at the University of Houston. In this revisionist account, Kirby suggests that Arnold was more a victim of his own inept political skills than a slave to base motives. A complex psychology was at work as well: Arnold always felt underappreciated by his colleagues, especially after victories at Saratoga. Benedict Arnold, Revolutionary Hero presents a detailed account of an often misunderstood man.
Book Description
"Often crosses paths with Kenneth Roberts's historical novels Arundel and Rabble in Arms and it makes a fine successor to those splendid books."
--Allen D. Boyer, New York Times Book Review
"Both a biography and an extended meditation on the ironies of the Revolution, Benedict Arnold, Revolutionary Hero is in many ways a remarkable example of the historian's craft. . . . .[an] indispensable guide."
--Los Angeles Times
"Martin discloses a new and entirely credible Benedict Arnold."
--The William and Mary Quarterly
Benedict Arnold stands as one of the most vilified figures in American history. Stories of his treason have so come to define him that his name, like that of Judas, is virtually synonymous with treason.
Yet Arnold was one of the most heroic and remarkable men of his time, indeed in all of American history. A brilliant military leader of uncommon bravery, Arnold dedicated himself to the Revolutionary cause, sacrificing family life, health, and financial well-being for a conflict that left him physically crippled, sullied by false accusations, and profoundly alienated from the American cause of liberty. By viewing Arnold's life backward through the prism of his treason, we invariably succumb to the demonizations that arose only after his abandonment of the rebel forces. We thereby overlook his critical role as one of the influential actors in the American Revolution.
Distinguished historian James Kirby Martin's landmark biography, the result of a decade's labor, stands as an invaluable antidote to this historical distortion. Careful not to endow the Revolutionary generation with mythical proportions of virtue, Martin shows how self-serving, venal behavior was just as common in the Revolutionary era as in our own time. Arnold, a deeply committed patriot, suffered acutely because of his lack of political savvy in dealing with those who attacked his honor and reputation. Tracing Arnold's life, from his difficult childhood through his grueling winter trek across the howling Maine wilderness, his valiant defense of Lake Champlain, and his crucial role in the Quebec and Saratoga campaigns, Martin has given us an entirely new perspective on this dramatic and exceptional life, set against the tumultuous background of the American Revolution.

The definitive source on Benedict Arnold's early life to his betrayal.......2006-04-29
James Kirby Martin presents a fascinating view of Benedict Arnold, from his birth and early years, through his wartime exploits, up to his betrayal. The book succeeds on many levels. For one, it forces the reader to confront certain truths that have been obscured by the fog of history - namely that Benedict Arnold, until his betrayal, was an American hero, one of the rebels' greatest generals. In this way, while I don't view Arnold sympathetically for his betrayal, I see him now as the lead role in a real life Greek tragedy. He could have been among the greatest of our Founders. Moreover, the book does not excuse Arnold's treason, but does explain it and put it in context. If for no other reason than historical accuracy, it is important for students of history to know why Arnold committed treason.
The book was masterfully written and meticulously researched. Along the line of research, one final word. This book spurred me to research and review a number of the sources cited by Martin. A previous reviewer criticized Martin for failing to cite the novels of Kenneth Roberts. This criticism is, to put it charitably, invalid. First, a novel is a work of fiction. This book is non-fiction, and while Roberts's novels are highly acclaimed, they are still fiction. It makes no sense to cite fiction when writing non-fiction. Second, Roberts did compile a number of diaries and memoirs entitled March to Quebec: Journals of the Members of Arnold's Expedition (1938). This source is non-fiction and in fact is cited by Martin at page 435 and 460-80. Finally, a review of this book in the New York Times Book Review notes that this book often crosses paths with Roberts's works of fiction, and that this book is a "fine successor to those splendid books."
This book truly is the definitive source on Benedict Arnold's early life, wartime exploits and ultimate betrayal of the colonial forces. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in American history.
Arnold the Hero.......2005-01-04
After viewing the A&E movie A Question Of Honor, my fascination with Arnold began.. So I decided to pick up this book. Mainly because I was more interested in Arnold the American Hero rather then Arnold the American Traitor....
There are two Benedict Arnolds of the American Revolution. Most people are only familiar with the Traitor Arnold rather then the Hero Arnold. This particular book focuses on the Hero Arnold (just look at the title of the book) and does a fine job. The story of Arnolds heroic actions in the early part of the American Revolution needed to be told and James Kirby Martin tackled the task greatly......
The book more or less ends at the battle of Saratoga. Mainly because after that infamous battle, Arnolds decent into treason began to pick up steam. If Arnold would have been killed at Saratoga he would have been an American Hero. After reading this book, I almost wish that would have been the case. The man was a victim of his own bitterness. The story of Benedict Arnold was a true tragedy....
I think this book should be viewed as a "part one" of the Benedict Arnold saga. After reading this book, seek out other books(on Arnold) which focuses on his treason.......
This is a very disappointing book.......2003-02-11
I bought this book because of the enthusiastic reviews it received on the Amazon.com website. Having looked through it, I am thoroughly disappointed. The author is apparently either unaware of the great novels dealing with Benedict Arnold, beautifully and accurately written in the 1930's by Kenneth Roberts,or has chosen to ignore them. I find this totally unacceptable, since much of what we know about the march to Quebec, the retreat and near loss of the Northern Army on Isle Aux Noix, and the Battle of Valcour Island came to light in "Arundel" and "Rabble in Arms". Martin apparently wanted to write an academic version of Arnold's life, but his failure to cite Roberts renders the Martin book intellectually dishonest. Further, that Martin could have failed to mention Roberts' collection of diaries entitled "The March on Quebec" is truly mind boggling. If it would be possible to give the book zero stars, I would do so for it doesn't deserve the one I had to give it.
The Real Story of America.......2002-09-23
Martin is the foremost authority on this period in our history. He also manages to be the only historian I have read yet that handled the Arnold Expedition to Quebec with the accuracy and depth it deserves. Martin speaks of my grandfather Major Reuben Colburn with fairness and awards him the credit for his efforts in supplying, leading and maintaining the mission denied him by historians through the ages. Many merely used Colburn as a scapegoat for the failure of the effort, but not Martin. His research revealed the truth as such an effort so often does should an author choose that path, and I applaud him for it. He has also backed me in my effort to convince the National Park Service to grant Colburn House in Pittston, Maine "Landmark" status. Jim Martin is an ally I value greatly, and a man who knows what he is talking about.
Excellent concept, well presented........2002-03-30
It's an obvious concept if you think about it: our automatic thought when we hear the name "Benedict Arnold" is clearly a matter of perspective, not simple truth. The victors write the histories. Had Britain won the war, Arnold would have been, at worst, someone who saw the writing on the wall and got out while the getting was good, and at best, a prodigal son who'd seen the light and returned to the fold, renouncing his treason against king and country.
The first beauty of this book is that by simply existing, it forces you TO think about it; most people never do. But beyond that, it gives a meticulous history of the man, admitting his flaws (he was ambitious and more than a bit prickly about what he saw as slurs on his personal honor) but also pointing out the many positives that most Americans are completely unaware of: he was one of the greatest generals in the rebel cause, generous, courageous, honorable, and brilliant. So why did this man turn against the cause he'd fought for? Partly because he was disillusioned by the behavior towards himself and others by what he saw as a congress interested more in political connections than competence in awarding military honors, partly because he came to believe that said congress's incompetence rendered the American cause unwinnable. An error, and a serious one, but one which must be balanced against the fact that his contributions at the battle of Saratoga were largely responsible for the American victory.
A fascinating study into a seriously overlooked subject in American history. A must-read.
Product Description
6 CD set, unabridged, approximately 6 hours, read by the author---Mental training is scarcely covered in the climbing literature, yet it is as important to performance as strength, flexibility, and technique. In his unique approach to mental training, Arno Ilgner draws essential elements from the rich "warrior" literature, as well as from sports psychology, and combines these with his extensive climbing experience to create The Rock Warrior`s Way. Here is a comprehensive program for learning how to focus your mental resources during a challenging climb. It includes step-by-step guidance on motivation analysis, information gathering, risk assessment, mental focus, and deliberate transition into action. Poor use of attention creates fear, which can manifest itself as anything from performance anxiety to sheer terror. By using attention more purposefully we can understand how fear is created, deal with it effectively, and free ourselves to get back in touch with a far more powerful motivating force: our love of climbing. We can then create the kind of unbending intention that leads to outstanding performance. The Rock Warrior`s Way is a revolutionary program for climbers who want to improve both their performance and their enjoyment of climbing.

Wow.......2006-07-30
Before I read this book, I was afraid to lead and would back off leads if I thought there was a chance I might fall. I had led a couple 5.9s, and easier routes, on bolts. Last week, I led a sustained 5.10d, last month I took my first lead fall on a 5.10c, and yesterday I led 5.10b as if it were 'no big deal.' The Rock Warrior's Way has transformed my view of leading and of climbing in general, and has opened up a whole new world of climbing for me. Thank you, Arno!!!
A tedious read.......2006-03-03
This brings a lot of new-age mysticism to rock climbing. There are definitely some valuable insights but you have to wade through a bunch of tired prose to find them. Overall, it won't do as much for your climbing as spending that time climbing.
fine.......2005-10-02
A very fine book, a must for those who seriously want to achieve their goals. Only with comitment goals can be conquered.
Personal Success & Growth.......2004-09-12
Arno provides the opportunity for advancing your climbing, your business and personal life. The opportunity to resolve challenges in climbing and life are addressed in this book. Arno offers a vision for improvement and understanding in the warrior's way. This book and Arno's training afforded me unparalleled advancement in my climbing and my personal life. As an individual who owns my own business and participates in many sports such as climbing, tennis, golf, snow skiing, and scuba diving to mention a few; the mental process of all these is sometimes overlooked in the application of physical ability. Arno understands the importance of involving and training the mental element in climbing to catapult your performance in life.
I have taken classes from Arno as well as taken his Warrior Training course. His training and guiding are mirrored here in this book. I highly recommend this book and the application of this book in the rewarding experience of taking his classes also.
Seminal Mind Training.......2004-06-28
As a casual acquaintance of Arno's over the years, I was gratified and pleased by how good his book turned out to be. It stands as a high water mark in the human potential genre. Well written and clear, Arno and Achey bring high theory down to earth (or the high cliffs as it were). As most people can imagine the challenge that hard rock climbing is, the lessons in this book could well be applied to help one deal with any challenge. In other words, you don't have to be a climber to get allot out of this book.
Regarding the falling issue mentioned a few reviews back, I have to defend Arno and make it very clear that he does not advocate taking falls willy nilly. What he does advocate is taking responsibility for one's willingness or unwillingness to fall and making that choice based on the best possible information at hand, unfettered by an irrational fear of falling that prooccupies attention and leads to the dreaded 'overgrip'. His fall drills are designed to lesson that kind of fear by making falling a known experience rather than a boogie man that robs one's attention and strength.
Where a climber likes to be on the safety - risk continuum is unavoidably a personal decision. Better to come to that decision with as much skill and information as one can gather. Nevertheless, regardless of how much you know and how strong you are, if you are challenging yourself at the edge of your abilities, you will still have to make your move and shove off into the unknown. That's the beauty of climbing.

The first collection of Xena short stories..........2004-12-07
17 stories by some of the most well known (and not so well known) authors, all set in the Xena universe. Adventures, Gods, magic and wrestling. Most of the stories are good, but you can tell that many of the authors didn't work together. One story says the City of Thebes was long gone, while another said it still existed. And in one story, about the battle of Salamis, Xena CARES about what the Greek Gods think about her. When did Xena care about what ANY God thought about?
So while this might be the first collection, it will also be the last.
short xena stories.......2003-01-25
this is a very good book, i couldn't put it down. there are lots of short stories in this book, so it doesn't get boring. if you are new to the xena paperbacks, this is the book to get you started.
Good post-Xena series collection........2002-05-11
Whether you liked (cough, cough) the final episode or not; you will love to regain your enjoyment for Xena and Gabrielle in this
collection of short stories. Pretty good. Also: "Damsel in the Rough" by Ann M. Tempesta and "Tropical Storm" by Melissa Good--authors who know how to produce a gutsy warrior babe!
Not Just for Xenites Anymore.......2001-11-19
Like many Xenites, I bought this book to read the work of fanfiction bard and series screenplay writer Missy Good, and I wasn't disappointed: Missy's stellar final story in the anthology made it worth the money.
However, I was thrilled to discover that the person picking the anthology entries and the writers submitting the stories were just as spot-on, dead center in their portrayal of Xena and Gabrielle as the best screenwriters and fanfiction bards out there. With the possible exception of the lengthy story involving Joxer (can't recall the name right now), every story gave wonderful new yet insightful glimpses of the characters we know and love. Further, for readers of all types of sword and sorcery fantasy, this book offers believable plotting and emotionally engaging characters.
This is a book that every Xena fan should own and one to pass on to non-Xenites. Spread the word-- this one's not just for Xenites.
Xceptional.......2001-09-17
I wasn't ready to let the series go yet. Thankfully Gabby and Xena lived on in this collection of short stories. Any and all XWP fans will love this book!!!
Book Description
For the first time in history, the capabilities of the U.S. military far outstrip those of any potential rival, either singly or collectively, and this reality raises fundamental questions about its role, nature, and conduct. The Moral Warrior explores a wide range of ethical issues regarding the nature and purpose of voluntary military service, the moral meaning of the unique military power of the United States in the contemporary world, and the moral challenges posed by the "war" on terrorism.

Must-Read for Military, Policy-makers, and General Citizens!.......2004-10-12
Martin L. Cook's deceptively slim volume, The Moral Warrior: Ethics and Service in the U.S. Military, is so densely packed with issues and analysis that it could easily sustain a semester or two of intense study in military ethics by itself. It is certainly a must-read for anyone struggling to disentangle the many troubling, interconnected questions that worry all those who hope to see the United States retain its global supremacy without undermining its moral foundations. Cook, a gifted teacher who has recently moved from the faculty of the U.S. Army War College to that of the U.S. Air Force Academy, is a master of the rare art of clarifying complex problems without minimizing their depth and significance or losing sight of their vital real-life implications.
The nine chapters of the book are divided into two parts: Part One, "Moral Facets of Military Service," and Part Two, "Moral Soldiers and Moral Causes: Serving the Needs of Justice in the New World Order." The chapters in Part One primarily address the moral responsibilities of individuals - particularly officers - who choose to serve in the military. Cook is able to bring a unique combination of "insider" knowledge (from his years of teaching to and learning from all ranks of military officers) and objective "outsider" insight (from his perspective as a civilian scholar) to his critique of recent debates about how to define the military profession in the 21st century and what should be expected of the modern military professional.
One of the most vital issues Cook raises in this section is the responsibility of military professionals to offer non-partisan advice to political leaders and policy makers regarding decisions on the use of military force. Cook notes that, on the one hand, "As the direct custodians of the health of their services' cultures and the lives of their soldiers, sailors, marines, or airmen, military professionals are rightly reluctant to send them on what they deem to be ill-considered missions." Yet, on the other hand, it is not appropriate for military leaders to outright refuse or intentionally undermine missions chosen and properly authorized by their civilian political leaders. Senior officers may have the option of resigning in protest, but they never have the right to subvert the constitutional requirement of civilian control of the military. Cook offers valuable suggestions, supported by historical examples, of how military officers can fulfill their moral obligation to make their voices heard in order to prevent blunders or even tragedies without overstepping their roles within the democratic state. With characteristic realism, he observes that this balancing act "requires the maturity of judgment to grasp that while [the military leaders'] world would be neater if political leaders would just define the mission and then get out of the way, that will almost never be the world within which they live and work out their professional obligations."
Part Two is focused mainly on ethical issues that arise while conducting missions, such as the challenge of weighing force protection concerns against the need to preserve noncombatant immunity. Here again, Cook displays a sharp understanding of the stakes involved. Military leaders have both the inclination and the obligation to try to preserve their troops from harm. However, if this drives officers to employ tactics that increase the likelihood of severe collateral damage and high death tolls among civilians, they may be guilty not only of violating jus in bello rules of discrimination and proportionality, but also of surrendering politically essential moral high ground and of damaging the prospects for peace.
Also in Part Two, Cook examines the struggle to overcome outdated notions of inviolable state sovereignty in order to perform humanitarian interventions and to effectively and ethically prosecute the Global War on Terror (GWOT). State sovereignty and territorial integrity are cherished concepts that have been used as the basis for international order and stability since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Yet it is that very order and stability that is now threatened by members of non-state global terror organizations who seek to escape justice by crossing borders and claiming sanctuary.
One of the appealing qualities of Cook's writing is the skill with which he relates present-day problems to those that have been encountered in other eras. In Part One, he compares the United States to ancient Athens, and in Part Two, he compares the Pax Americana to the Pax Romana to make an urgent appeal for us to learn from the past and not repeat its mistakes. The striking - or perhaps chilling - parallels he draws between the policy decisions of Athens prior to and during the disastrous Peloponnesian Wars and those of America today are truly eye-opening. So are the comparisons Cook makes between barbarian assaults on the Western Roman Empire and modern terrorist attacks against the West. Rome, of course, fell to the barbarian hordes, and the West was plunged into the Dark Ages. To prevent a repeat of that devastating historic cycle, Cook warns that we in the modern West must not spend all our energy merely criticizing ourselves and the world order that we dominate. The question is not whether we are perfect. As Cook sternly enjoins, "Moral seriousness requires, instead, asking, `If this civilization falls, what come next?'"
The Moral Warrior includes one of the most neatly laid-out summaries of the development of the Just War tradition from ancient times to the present that can be found in any single text. Cook has provided a fresh and accessible examination of issues in military ethics that should demand the attention not only of those in the military and those who play a direct role in affecting policy decisions, but also of general citizens. Terrorism is a global phenomenon that can reach into our homes, our schools, our places of work and of worship. We want our professional warriors to protect us, but it is our moral responsibility to try to understand exactly what that does - and does not - entail, what we are willing for them to do on our behalf and in our name, and what costs we have a right to ask them to bear.

The Perfect Warrior: A Machine........2004-01-14
Brought to you by the people you gave you Supertanks, Body Armor: 2000 and Space Dreadnoughts, a book of short stories which focus on mankind's greatest dream and nightmare - fighting machines. All the classics are here, from Fred Saberhagen's "Smasher" to Keith Laumer's "A Relic Of War". Other authors such as Poul Anderson, Philip K. Dick and Gordon R. Dickson add their stories to the mix.
While the stories are all pre-1991, this book is a must for any sci-fi fan or robot fan.
