Book Description
PowerShell replaces cobbled-together assemblies of third-party management tools with an elegant programming language and a powerful scripting shell for the Windows environment. In the tradition of Manning's ground breaking "In Action" series, this book comes from right from the source. Written by Bruce Payette, one of principal creators of PowerShell, Windows PowerShell in Action shows you how to build scripts and utilities to automate system tasks or create powerful system management tools to handle the day-to-day tasks that drive a Windows administrator's life. Because it's based on the .NET platform, PowerShell is also a powerful tool for developers and power users.
Windows PowerShell in Action was written by Bruce Payette, one of the founding members of the Windows PowerShell team, co-designer of the PowerShell language and the principal author of the PowerShell language implementation. The book enables you to get the most out of the PowerShell environment. Using many examples, both small and large, this book illustrates the features of the language and environment and shows how to compose those features into solutions, quickly and effectively.
This book is designed for anyone who wants to learn PowerShell and use it well. Rather than simply being a book of recipes to read and apply, this book gives you the deep knowledge about how PowerShell works and how to apply it.

Geeked Out on Powershell.......2007-08-06
As a both a Windows and Linux system administrator, this book overall made me frustrated initially, as I really don't want to delve into the introspective nature of compiler design miracles, but rather have a practical book on applying PowerShell. Nevertheless, once I sat down and reviewed key chapters, I was able to learn how to better utilize Powershell and apply it to some chores relating to the nature of system administration.
One of the things I high agree with another reviewer is that the book does indeed delve too much into the "gears and cogs" of Powershell, and many times too much. Sometimes we delve into how behind the scenes, the language takes measures to behave like any other language or shell, and we're scratching our heads, why did I have to understand what I always knew to work and behave. Good example is page 62 on string expansion, where once something is assigned is doesn't changed when accessed. Like that's how everything is suppose to work. Though, then he mentions how to override the behavior, but never drops any code examples for that side note.
Though this book seems more oriented to software developers, rather than system administrators, I would still recommend this book, as you can become really well versed in the Powershell and understand its advantages as it relates to the .NET platform on the recent Windows OSes.
Clearly a Winner.......2007-08-06
Not only does this teach you powershell, it answers all kinds of questions about why Powershell is the way it is, and why certain decisions were made. Ever want to know why we use -eq instead of == ? The answer is in here. This books simply rocks. This book not only shows you how to use Powershell, it teaches you Powershell works, from the inside out. Completely worthwhile. I would highly suggest reading it multiple times, as you learn more and more each time through.
PAGE 205 ... PAGE 205.......2007-07-28
This book gives you the goods and helps you become very productive very fast. As a service ... I'm pointing out that PowerShell is installed in a somewhat crippled state which allows for interactive scripting only. You know, security, security, security.
Most of us, of course want to put the script into a file and execute it and this won't work until you set an 'execution policy'. This information can be found starting on page 205 and further directions on page 451.
Just thought you'd like to know.
Besides that a very good book that stands on it's own. If you've been around the programming track a couple of times you won't need the 'for the absolute beginner' book ... this one will do the trick!
I wish all technical books were written this well.
Don't Make This Your First Purchase.......2007-07-09
Consider this book the Definitive Reference for PowerShell. Written by one of the designers of the PowerShell environment, the author knows all the ins and outs, back-alleys, hidden rooms, and secret handshakes the language offers - and isn't afraid to grab you by the hand and drag you along (like it or not!) for the tour of your life.
Therein, however, is the reason I can't recommend this as your first PowerShell book. The book is very logically planned out, the information very well presented in relatively easy to understand language, there is an abundance of script snippets to demonstrate what is being talked about, and the writing style itself is entertaining to read. But the author knows too much on the subject, and like any proud parent, often "too much information" is given, delving too deep into the gears and cogs of PowerShell and the underlying .NET framework for the (often basic) building block component, which might overwhelm the new PowerShell user, especially if the user does not have programming, let alone scripting, experience.
So although I say don't make this your first purchase, make it your second - and probably your last. Start with an "Introduction" style book (like Microsoft Windows Powershell Programming for the Absolute Beginner) to get used to the complex environment (even if you've only had VBS/JS experience), get comfortable with the basics of the shell, then move up to this title. You'll soon find out that every aspect you thought you knew has much more to the story than you thought, and you'll walk away from this read able to do just about everything you want.
Everything you ever wanted to know about PowerShell.......2007-05-12
I don't ever remember reading a computer book from cover to cover, but I got hooked on this book and "can't put it down"... Plus, who ever thought that the history of a program could be as interesting as this one is. After all, the book begins by asking "why another shell language?" By the time you are into a few chapters you realize the question should have been "what took you so long?"
The book is peppered with valuable code examples that show off everything from the basics to the most advanced concepts, and the examples are built incrementally so you can see how and why every character in a command line works. Since PowerShell is object oriented, you easily learn why this is important, and how to extract the power of an OO shell.
I've already put PowerShell to work at the office using it for WMI, Active Directory, and file management tasks and have incorporated it into my AutoIT scripts as well. This book was a great help in getting me up to speed as fast as I have.

Book Description
Penetration testing a network requires a delicate balance of art and science. A penetration tester must be creative enough to think outside of the box to determine the best attack vector into his own network, and also be expert in using the literally hundreds of tools required to execute the plan. This book provides both the art and the science.
The authors of the book are expert penetration testers who have developed many of the leading pen testing tools; such as the Metasploit framework. The authors allow the reader inside their heads to unravel the mysteries of thins like identifying targets, enumerating hosts, application fingerprinting, cracking passwords, and attacking exposed vulnerabilities. Along the way, the authors provide an invaluable reference to the hundreds of tools included on the bootable-Linux CD for penetration testing.
* Covers both the methodology of penetration testing and all of the tools used by malicious hackers and penetration testers
* The book is authored by many of the tool developers themselves
* This is the only book that comes packaged with the "Auditor Security Collection"; a bootable Linux CD with over 300 of the most popular open source penetration testing tools
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-23
Great starter book into Pen Testing. Big book with lots of information. Great book to read to prepare to start your CEH or CISSP studies.
good introduction.......2007-02-22
If you live and breathe IT security, this books is for you. I would like to somewhat disagree with some of the earlier reviewers. I don't think this book was intended to be "the one and only" penetration toolkit manual. However, what it does do - it introduces one to the world of penetration testing providing enough information and examples on a wide variety of tools. A lot of great subjects are covered, such as reconnaissance, enumeration, scanning, web application testing, wireless penetration and more. It's a very insightful read, even for those who are just researching in the area of security. It will open your eyes on many aspects of information security. The CD itself is a good resource, but you may need to update some applications by now. Nessus signatures do get updated regularly.
Solid Penetration Testing Book.......2007-02-06
At around 700 pages in size, the 'Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit' by Johnny Long is a solid reference material which is a nice pickup for anyone that is concerned with this subject matter. As with all Syngress books, you aren't buying these for the highest quality paper or design, but rather the material within. This is a solid book that most users should find helpful in their jobs.
**** RECOMMENDED
Excellent reference........2007-01-22
If you are going to do any work in the Information Assurance world you will want to add this book to your shelf and keep it handy. The authors of this book know the topics and present information clearly.
Each chapter is a stand-alone lesson, and all chapters build on each other to create a big-picture of exploiting any network and reporting results. The CD that comes with the book gives you excellent tools to start or fill out your library. Some are getting dated as of this writing, but all are still solid tools that you can update once you've learned them.
I highly recommend this book!
Good review of currently available software.......2006-09-25
Title: Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit
Author: Johnny Long, Aaron Bayles, James Foster, Chris Hurley, Mike Petruzzi Noam Rathaus, Mark Wolfgang
Publisher: Syngress Publishing, Inc.
800 Hingham Street
Rockland, MA 02370
Copyright: 2006
ISBN: 1597490210
Pages: 678 plus appendix and index
This book not only covers what tools are available for penetration testing but also details how to use them to effectively test the system. Some of the tools, such as whois and ping, will be very familiar to the Linux user and most power users of other operating systems. Other tools are less familiar but very powerful and a real insight into what can be done to gather information on a system before attempting to penetrate it. Part of what makes this book really interesting is the way the authors approach this subject. They don't walk the reader through all the details of a handful of tools but instead they take a task-oriented approach. For example they go first through enumerating and scanning a system, then testing databases, web server testing, web application testing, wireless penetration and network devices. They then end this section with information about writing open source security tools. Chapter 8 starts a section on the Open Source vulnerability scanner Nessus. It automatically finds many problems in the system by trying to penetrate it using various scripts. The results are captured and the generated reports detail the information it was able to obtain. This is a very powerful testing product and one of the most common ones you will find in the marketplace.
The authors detail how to set up a Nessus client and server, scan the system and understand the results. Although almost three hundred pages are dedicated to Nessus it is a very powerful and highly configurable program that can consume a full book by itself to use its full potential. Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit is highly recommended, insightful, and very interesting to read and experiment with.

Helpful tips on developing an embedded host that can access USB mass-storage devices are also covered.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of info, great place to start.......2007-07-25
This book is well written, offers plenty of details and provides good direction for developing mass storage related devices. It exposes the magnitude of information one must learn to make a working product and is a great first start. The accompanying website www.lvr.com is also very helpful.
This book is an excellent attempt at addressing a technically complex subject. As long as you don't expect the book to hand you a complete solution, you won't be disappointed. The material can only be thoroughly understood by applying it. Many of the examples can be implemented with the development board from Microchip, which is very affordable.
Very good.......2007-03-16
The book is telling about accesing the storage devices Flash ,Mmc,Sd etc. with the Pic18F microcontroller... You learn writing codes with the Microchip's C compiler and Dev. Kit to these devices by the storage libraries in...A typical Jan Axelson book, clear and very good....

Hardware and Software in One Book.......2006-08-26
This is a very well done book on a very topical subject. USB mass storage has gotten so inexpensive that its use in dedicated embedded systems has become almost a given. And here is one book that talks about all aspects of putting such a system together.
The book basically covers three subjects:
First there is a general discussion of mass storage in general. This includes hard drives which may be the most economical for your application, and it includes various types of flash memory devices.
Second the book covers the hardware interface down to the level of giving a sample circuit.
Finally there is a description of the software that will be needed to get the devices to operate. This goes from the simple structure of the commands down to the definition of file systems.
In short, here is a complete guide to USB Mass Storage in one, fairly small, book. This is all the engineer/programmer needs. Ms. Axelson has written a number of books on USB in general and clearly knows whereof she speaks.
An excelent introduction this unique topic.......2006-08-21
This book covers two areas of computer technology: creating USB based mass storage systems, using either rotating (disk) media or flash storage. It offers guidance and examples for each of these with a focus on the special requirements and limits of embedded hosts that access USB storage devices.
A design engineer who's task it is to design a USB based memory subsytem has options. He or she can contact various device manufacturers, request data sheets, and demo or development boards. This step will be needed. Next is to prototype several such devices, to create software drivers, and to debug the hardware and software. One could "google" for sources, and start there, or... One could purchase Jan's book and get a head start with both hardware selection AND with software driver development.

Because it applies the concise and popular Nutshell format to Microsoft's preferred scripting language, VBScript in a Nutshell is a valuable learning resource and reference. Focusing on the core language rather than on any specific application, this book teaches how to write clear, efficient VBScript code. Whether developing for the Web, automating Windows, or customizing Microsoft Outlook, this book will help the reader do a better job.
Though it caters to new users, VBScript is mainly a reference book. Each piece of the core VBScript specification (plus the Dictionary and FileSystemObject objects that make up the Microsoft Scripting Runtime) is described in an alphabetized entry. For each statement, function, operator, and object, the book gives a quick description of the element's syntax, concise rules of its proper use, information on returned values (if any), and some examples of the language element used correctly in practice. Two additional sections on each language element will be valuable to novices and anyone stumped by errors: a "Rules at a Glance" section that documents correct usage, and a section called "Programming Tips & Gotchas" that highlights common mistakes. --David Wall
Topics covered: Core VBScript and the most important object models on which it operates, including Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Windows Scripting Host. Tutorial material and reference entries explain structure, syntax, and program design.
Book Description
Lightweight yet powerful, VBScript from Microsoft® is used in four main areas: server-side web applications using Active Server Pages (ASP), client-side web scripts using Internet Explorer, code behind Outlook forms, and automating repetitive tasks using Windows Script Host (WSH). VBScript in a Nutshell, Second Edition delivers current and complete documentation for programmers and system administrators who want to develop effective scripts. Completely updated for VBScript 5.6, WSH 5.6 and ASP 3.0, VBScript In a Nutshell, Second Edition includes updated introductory chapters that will help you keep current with the significant changes since the first edition was published. New chapters introduce the Windows Script Component for creating binary COM components, and the Script Encoder. The main part of the book is a comprehensive reference focusing on VBScript essentials with an alphabetical reference to all statements, keywords and objects, and a section of notes and solutions to real-world gotchas--various undocumented behaviors and aspects of the language--to help you avoid potential problems. Each entry in the reference section details the following:
- The keyword's syntax, using standard code conventions
- A list of arguments accepted by the function or procedure, if any exist
- A discussion of how and where the keyword should be used within the scripting environment
- A discussion of the differences between the operation of the keyword in Visual Basic or VBA and in VBScript
Regardless of your level of experience programming with VBScript, VBScript in a Nutshell, Second Edition is the book you'll want by your side--the most complete, up-to-date, and easy-to-use language reference available.
Customer Reviews:
2nd edition didn't document all the changes in 5.6.......2007-04-25
I've been a big fan of the 1st edition for years and found it very helpful. I use Regular Expressions a lot in Perl and found VBScript's support for RE's a bit lacking (could not extract the submatches). I was pleasantly surprised to find that this capability was added in VBScript 5.5. I bought the 2nd edition of this book because it claimed to cover VBScript 5.6. Imagine my surprise when the SubMatches collection isn't documented at all.
Overall I'm quite disappointed in the 2nd edition.
A great book for VB Scripters.......2007-02-12
This text is excellent for folks working on VBs projects. It contains good examples, great information about syntax and also warnings for "gotcha's" -- it's great!
Very useful VBScript reference.......2006-07-17
This is not intended for beginners in scripting or VBScript in particular. But for anyone with even moderate programming or scripting, this may be all you'll need to become familiar with VBScript.
Written in the spare, terse style of all Nutshell books, the book is very dense in terms of information. The major aspects of VBScript's versatility are explored (though there are no references to HTML Applications (HTAs)). The major functions are explained and there is a complete reference.
An essential volume for anyone using VBScript.
Jerry
Good Reference Book.......2006-02-01
This is not the book to learn the basics of VBScript, but it's exactly what I needed; a good reference book. I got tired of trying to find syntax of commands and functions online. Now I have it at my fingertips.
NUTSHELL.......2005-12-06
I don't have this book, I've never read it. But the negative reviews for it are out of line. People have reviewed it claiming it isn't for the beginner or for learning VB Script. NO KIDDING!! It is called NUTSHELL for a reason. It is a reference book, NOT a learning book. Don't give bad reviews for a book because you were too stupid to realize you bought the wrong book. That's just as bad as buying a Java book and complaining that it doesn't have any Javascipt examples in it.

Here is a lovely guide to hosting your very own Flower Fairy tea party. It includes decorations, invitations, ideas for food to serve, party outfits, games to play, and presents for your guests. Various fairies will lead you through each section of the book to make your tea party fabulous.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for hosting a fairy party.......2007-09-17
This book was very helpful in hosting my daughter's 6th birthday Fairy Party! It had wonderful ideas, invitations to punch out (although I had to photo copy to make more as it only came with 4), and a whole section on "manners" when hosting a fairy party. Out of the 3 books I bought on this subject this one was the most useful and my favorite.
Very little information.......2007-08-04
This book is beautiful, but not worth the price. It has very little information on having a fairy party. There is better, free information online.
Magical Book.......2007-02-15
I bought this as the companion book for Flower Fairies Tea Party theme at Birthday Express. I also bought Fairy Crafts: 23 Enchanting Toys, Gifts, Costumes, and Party Decorations & Sweet Pea's Garden: Special Things to Make. All of this combined to make my daughter's special day very magical. In fact, if I only had this book, and Sweet Pea's Garden, I still would have had everything I needed.
I admit the recipes aren't that original although I liked the idea of using peaches as little bowls for fruit salad. Martha Stewart has a great idea for a pixie party with a nice menu. And Fairy Food is a cute little cookbook by Rebecca Gilpin that might give you some ideas. I didn't buy this book for food ideas though and I loved it. This book is worth having just for the artwork! I taped a ziplock bag to the inside back cover to keep all the punch outs together. I plan on using this book again for many more parties. And I photo copied the invitations. There just weren't enough for all of my daughters guests. This book even touches slightly on a hostesses duties wich was perfect.
Wonderful, my daughter loves it........2006-01-26
While the book is indeed only 28 pages, that's hardly the point. Think of it as 28 pages of ideas and activites that will keep your child entertained for weeks. I am suprised that my daughter has managed to keep track of all the little pieces that came with the book. This book taught her this! She still reads/plays with this book after three months.
Book is just 28 pages.......2005-04-27
There are only 4 recipes, and those are far from original. And the entire book has only 28 pages!

Repairman Jack returns in a sequel to the New York Times bestseller, The Tomb!Repairman Jack has been tearing up the urban adventure scene ever since he was introduced in the New York Times bestseller The Tomb. As his fans know, Repairman Jack doesn't deal with electronic appliances; he's a situation fixer, no matter how weird or deadly a situation may be. Repairman Jack has no last name, no Social Security number, and no qualms when it comes to getting the job done-even if it means putting himself in serious danger. After fifteen years of separation, Jack is contacted by his long-lost sister, Kate, to help her track down the source of her girlfriend Jeanette's sudden trance-like behavior. Referred by a mysterious stranger who gives only Jack's name and phone number, Kate is shocked to find out that the "repairman" she seeks is none other than her little brother-and not altogether happy to find out what little "Jackie" has been doing with himself for all these years. With Jack leading the way, Kate finds out that Jeannette's behavior can be traced back to the experimental therapy she underwent for a brain tumor: now Jeannette's brain and those of several other subjects are infected by a mutated virus. Like any good virus, it wants to multiply-and if Jack can't stop the virus in its path, there will be deadly results. Meanwhile, Jack is traveling on the 9 train when suddenly a passenger goes berserk and starts shooting at random-leaving Jack no choice but to throw himself into the spotlight by putting the shooter down. Worse for Jack, one of his fellow passengers is a reporter for the local tabloid, The Light, who sees Jack's heroism as his ticket to journalistic stardom. The reporter promises to make Jack a celebrity hero, a household name-which could mean the end of Repairman Jack as we know him.

Jack and the Body Snatchers.......2007-08-26
The genres may be different, but lately I have found that a couple of the series I have enjoyed the most in the past few years have both featured a character named Jack: Lee Child's Jack Reacher books and F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack books. Hosts, the fifth in the series, is as much fun to read as the others have been.
In this novel, Jack gets a phone call from the sister Kate who he hasn't seen since he parted ways with his family after his mother's death. It is an accidental encounter: when she reached out to Repairman Jack, she had no idea it was her estranged brother. She just thought that he could help her get her lover Jeanette back from an apparent cult.
Jeanette has recently recovered from a brain tumor, having been treated with an experimental virus. The virus worked but had an unusual side effect: it has linked Jeanette with others who were similarly treated into a kind of hive intelligence called the Unity. It's bad enough that Jeanette is seemingly emotionless, but her little group has the intent of spreading the virus and essentially forcing everyone into the Unity.
Kate is one of the first targets, and Jack, after trying to help, is second on the list. In certain ways, it is Invasion of the Body Snatchers, though the conclusion is reminiscent of another classic novel/movie which I will not name lest I spoil things (those who've seen it or read it will easily recognize it). In a subplot, Jack's attempts to keep hidden from the government are threatened after he performs a heroic act; this threat to his freedom needs to be dealt with, but is rather irrelevant if he can't save the world too. (There is a rather nightmarish chapter that shows what would happen if the Unity succeeds.)
Although Hosts works as a standalone story, there are references to other books that makes it better if you've read the other books. In particular, there is the larger story of Jack's run-ins with the Adversary (first seen way back in the non-Jack novel, The Keep). Whether this is your first F. Paul Wilson novel or not, however, this novel is a fast and fun read that should be enjoyed by most supernatural thriller fans.
Another Excellent Adventure.......2007-06-06
This here's another excellent Repairman Jack adventure. If you haven't read any of Repairman Jack, don't start here. Start with "The Tomb". I've read 6 of them and am working my way up to the current books. This series just keeps getting better and better. Highly addictive as well as Highly Recommended.
Repairman Jack Hosts another Winner Adventure!.......2007-04-10
F. Paul Wilson's 5th book in the Repairman Jack series is another surefire winner. Although my wife and I thought it the weaker of the five we've thus far have read, we still thought it a great read.
In Hosts, Jack not only saves a subway full of people from a crazed Host-minded thug, but gets almost found out by the authorities by a young man who had sat next to Jack who happened to be a newspaper reporter.
Although a small time writer/reporter for a small time paper, the man named Sandy palmer becomes an overnight celebrity. It gets him recognized. It gets him laid. It gets him wanting more. Thus making Jack's life hell. Lots of neat stuff here in this storyline thread. He actually kinda becomes Superman's Jimmy Olsen.
Then there's the reader's introduction to Jack's long-lost sister, Kate. Kate becomes reunited with jack from sheer happenstance, and their reunion is great to read about. Kate is divorced with two teens, who has now recently discovered that she is gay, and currently in love with a woman who has totally transformed into a stranger. And they need help.
It turns out that a virus from the Otherness is at work. And Jack is thrust into a private war with a hive minded people called the Unity. There are numerous twists and turns here, and the story is a very good one. But just in F. Paul Wilson fashion, the author only hints to bigger things to come. Small revelations are shown here, along with a huge surprise ending that we didn't expect.
Can't wait to read the next installment.
HOSTS another great Repairman Jack book.......2007-01-09
Do not miss any of the Repairman Jack books - every book will keep you turning the page to see how Repairman Jack wins each mission he take on. If you like Jack Bower in "24" you will love Repairman Jack.
Best In Series?.......2006-11-08
After a subpar outing in Conspiracies, Repairman Jack returns to form in HOSTS, the 5th in the series. This book gets off to a frenzied start as a subway is taken over by a crazed gunman, and Jack is forced to act openly in order to save his life and that of the other riders. From there, surprise after suprise await Jack as his path crosses with his sister, and some old enemies from previous books.
The action and situations that Wilson presents us with in this book are top notch, and, with the exception of one 20-page long dream sequence, never falters.
Kudos to Mr. Wilson for delivering such a satisfying book!

Entertaining Informative Introduction to World of Viruses.......2005-01-12
In an age with threats of bioterrorism and the ever present threat of global pandemics, with the rapid growth in knowledge in the biological sciences, it is difficult if not nearly impossible to fathom what is going on. Several years ago I decided to educate myself in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, and infectious disease. My only formal training in the biological sciences was high school biology from over 40 years ago. I read articles in Scientific American, Discover Magazine, numerous books, both textbooks and popular books, and found myself not seeing the forest for the trees. Then I found Dr. Sompayrac's books, "How the immune system works," and "How pathogenic viruses work." My usual words of praise are "not bad," but in the case of these books, I have to say "excellent." Dr. Sompayrac somehow manages to present the forest without neglecting the trees in a highly entertaining, readable, and informative manner. Both books are short, but rich in content presented in a well-organized manner with appropriately placed brief reviews. After reading his books, I then went back to some of the others and found that everything just fell into place.
I have already recommended both to numerous friends. Not only should these books be read by any lay person interested in modern biology, infectious diseases, and immunology, but public health workers, high school teachers, undergraduate students and teachers should all find these books worth reading and using as references. I actually wrote to Dr. Sompayrac suggesting he follow up with a book on "How pathogenic bacteria work," and I can only hope that he does.
From the author:.......2002-04-06
I'm the guy who wrote this book. I thought it might useful to tell you a little about what's in it -- and why I wrote it.
There are many books which employ viruses as tools to teach molecular and cellular biology. This makes sense. A lot of what we know about these subjects was learned by observing how viruses usurp the biochemical machinery of their host cells. However, these texts tend to treat viruses as bit players, focusing mainly on the cells they inhabit. Consequently, such a book can teach you a lot about cell biology, but it usually won't give you much insight into the "mind of the virus." In How Pathogenic Viruses Work, the virus occupies center stage, because my goal is to give you an overall picture of virus-host interactions from the point of view of the virus.
There are also big, heavy books that seem to contain every possible detail about every virus in the universe. These texts are great for reference, but they give the impression that viruses are incredibly complicated and almost impossible to understand. In fact, viruses are quite simple. They really only know how to solve three problems, and the diseases viral infections cause are the consequences -- frequently the unintended consequences -- of the different ways viruses solve these problems.
How Pathogenic Viruses Work is written in the form of "lectures," because I want to talk to you directly, just as if we were together in a classroom. In this book, I focus on the important concepts, and leave out as much detail as possible. I also limit my discussion to viruses that cause diseases in humans. Lord knows, there are plenty of them, and to me (and probably to you), these viruses are really the most interesting ones.
Your professor may use this book as the core text for a course, supplementing these lectures with fascinating facts about his or her favorite viruses. Alternatively, your professor may use this book as a course preview, both to provide you with a global view of how pathogenic viruses work, and to give you "pegs" on which to hang more detail as the course progresses.
But no matter how your professor may choose to use this book, you should keep one thing in mind: I didn't write this book for your professor. This book's for you!
A review from a layman.......2002-04-04
I'll admit to being intimidated by a book titled "How Pathogenic Viruses Work." Being a well educated layman more attuned to marketing than medicine, I expected to be completely lost while reading about the various bugs that invade our bodies and how the body calls to battle its natural defenses.
However, I was rescued by some of the best writing and the most logical presentation I have ever read. This is no small claim as I have published over 150 articles for high tech magazines covering some very detailed topics in computing. My hat is off to Sompayrac for communicating complex topics in a style that is both clear and entertaining.
Sompayrac organized his book in the very way I would want to study the subject. His opening chapters (which he calls "lectures") deal with the way viruses "think" and the three basic problems that all viruses must address in order to survive. Sompayrac's explanations bring home the mechanics of Darwinism that viruses face when invading our bodies or breading themselves in cross-species transplants.
Sompayrac then discusses how viruses enter our bodies (inhalation, orally, through birth and through sex) and why each path has its advantages for specific viruses. For each entry method, Sompayrac discusses three unique viruses and how they conquered the problems of replication, spreading and evasion of host defenses. Sompayrac finishes the book by discussing the tactics that modern medicine is employing or testing to combat viruses. The discussion of tactics and their usefulness or dangerousness in regard to HIV is most illuminating.
Unique to this work - and hopefully for Sompayrac's other books including a rumored book on cancer - is his light, almost playful style of writing that keeps the reader riveted to the discussion despite the occasional need to drill down into medical jargon. Despite being only a layman limited by a typical array of college biology electives, I read, understood and enjoyed the entire book. I walked away with new insights into the miracles of life - ours and those microscopic life forms that occasionally try to kill us.
Had I encountered this book in high school or college I suspect I would have changed my major from technical and business realms to medicine and virology. Sompayrac's insights show these worlds to be compelling, intricate and violent places where the very fate of mankind may lay.

Good text.......2006-02-25
I am sure this is a great text for plant biologists, but personally I found it to be very helpful in understanding some fundamental biology in a different context, e.g. CAM metabolism. I recommend it.
Excellent introduction to Cell Micro.......2004-09-09
This book introduces the reader into a new area of research that explores basic cellular mechanisms by using microorganisms and their products as tools to study the cell. It provides an excellent introduction to undergrads not familiar with medical microbiology; more advanced students can skip the beginning and focus on their selected area of interest (the chapter on apoptosis is specially interesting).

Book Description
In this sharp-witted romantic comedy about the clash of the classes (of all kinds), a poor girl at a rich kids' school ends up working at the school's toniest club-and gets mistaken for a boy!
In this high anticipated title, a kind of cross between HANA-KIMI and BOYS OVER FLOWERS, Haruhi is a scholarship student at an exclusive private school: Ouran High School, where it turns out the bespectacled, short-haired Haruhi is the only student from a lower-middle class family in attendance!
Then, to make matters worse, one day she breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to one of the campus clubs-a mysterious outfit called the "Host Club," consisting of six superrich (and gorgeous) guys. Haruhi can't afford to pay back the cost of the vase, of course, so she's forced to work for the Host Club! And it's there that she discovers just how rich all the boys are and how different the rich are from you and me...And meanwhile, the eccentric but good-hearted rich boys are shocked to find out how life is on the other side...

Very Entertaining.......2007-09-26
After watching the anime version of this I just had to check out the manga. They follow very closely but the slight differences is what make them both worth watching/reading. This particular volume was very entertaining which I recommend to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted read and of course comedy.
More Ouran Goodness!.......2007-09-16
The Ouran High School Host Club manga, I'm pleased to say, is as wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny as the anime. I'm eagerly collecting the volumes as they are published in English now, and though some storyline details have been changed slightly, I recognize plot lines that were used in anime episodes that I have watched. I love this series.
<3 If you like comedy and parodies of cliches and you haven't tried this already, you should!
An easy 5 stars ^^........2007-08-08
I admit, I had my hesitations when my friend first asked me to watch the anime version of Ouran High School Host Club--but after seeing just 10 minutes of it, I was hooked!
Next time I took a trip to the local bookstore, I grabbed the first two volumes of the manga, and eagerly devoured them in one sitting.
I'm not a serious manga/anime fan, but Ouran just might convince me otherwise It's absolutely hilarious--it makes me laugh every time I read it :). The plotlines are pleasantly silly, but there are a few serious moments--these are sometimes brought back to earth with a gag, but are still believable. The characters are all fantastic; so much so that I have a really hard time deciding who's my favorite, and the books are so dense that they last a long time, and can be re-read--and you'll always find one little gag that you missed, or something you didn't notice.
A couple of people have complained about the layouts and artwork, but I got used to these very quickly, and now actually prefer Hatori's artwork to the other styles I've seen.
Overall, a brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable series.
Ouran high school host club .......2007-07-20
if you don't understand the culture of the host clubs this book my take some getting use to. the main idia of a host club is to ditract from the real world. it plays on girls (or boys) love of fanticy even if it has no conection to the real world.
this book is a litterary host club. it is full of outrageus people, imposible stuations, and a slightly loopy of the exseptionaly rich.
the story follows the commpleetly down to eath Hirohi. Hirohi is a poor scholorship studant who doesn't even resister on the social radar of her new shcool. Ouran is full of the discustingly rich. many of the students have been engaed since preschool. briking into even the mainstream is impossible.
Then Hirohi, who looks like a boy due to stainded of resorces and a stiky incounter with gum, enters the host club while looking for a place to study (studying being her main love) and nocks into an expencive vase. to pay off her debts she is blackmailed into working in the host club. it takes a while for everyone to discover her gender. though she seems to be exploted by the host club she is suddenly part of the most eleit soicety of the msot elite school. from that vatage point she obsever skeaming twins, the worlds biggest flirt, a cake loveing lolitta (alian?) and hsi protector and well as the most greedy evil mastermind ever to flit with girls.
A Few Minor Points.......2007-06-26
First, the proper term is "reverse harem". Second, Haruhi ends up working for the Host Club as a host, because they think she's a guy. Wen they do find out that she's a girl, she still gets to work as a host. The entire series is a charming romantic comedy with some very touching moments.
