Book Description

In America today college professors cringe at the lack of writing skills displayed by their students, business leaders bemoan poor communicative skills among their employees, and people themselves recognize that they (and their children) have a problem and want to do something about it.
This inviting book introduces readers anew to the eight parts of speech and common grammatical problems -- such as the case of pronouns depicted in the book's title, the tension between nouns and verbs, the controversy of the active vs. passive voice, and the power of a verb-based style. Then equipped with a knowledge of the parts of speech and the power of the verb form, Good presents his theory of style and the craft of sentences -- including those important marks of punctuation.

The title alone will sell you. I must hear people misusing "I and me" 100 times a week. I wish I'd had this book in high school. It lays out usage in a clear and understandable manner and doesn't bog you down with information that you don't care about.
Terrific reference book for non-English majors.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Buy This Book!!!.......2007-07-08

The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you are interested in grammar. That means you should buy this book, as it is certainly one of the better books on this topic. What I especially like is that it does not treat you as a grammarian and it reviews many basics of sentence structure - and it is an enjoyable read. Yes, you still should have a copy of "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White if you're serious about good writing, but this book is a clear, single source, winner to me. I write articles, books and websites. I routinely seek good reference advice. That includes this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Grammar.......2007-05-13

Mr. Good laments the fact that grammar is no longer taught in schools and he has taken the effort to introduce novices to it in a fun way. I am truly enjoying his book and I am learning much along the way! Thank you, Mr. Good!

5 out of 5 stars Finally - a grammar book written for the rest of us!.......2007-04-11

I am always trying to ensure my grammar is correct (a habit I picked up from my father.) I've not been able to find a book that explains common grammar problems in a way I would remember. This one is easy to use and I will always keep it with my dictionary and other reference books.

5 out of 5 stars Our Most Important Subject.......2006-08-28

This is an excellent book for learning or renewing our knowledge of English Grammar. There is a conspiracy in this country to dumb down the attendees of public schools, and it began in the early part of the last century with some wealthy industrialists and government officials. Leaving Children behind began before Bush and he is a prime example of it. Let's all fight back by speaking English properly, as well as reading and writing excellently. This book is a good place to start! Then, on to Phonics!

Book Description

Part memoir, part monologue, with a dash of startling honesty, There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say features biographies of legendary historical figures from which Paula Poundstone can’t help digressing to tell her own story. Mining gold from the lives of Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and Beethoven, among others, the eccentric and utterly inimitable mind of Paula Poundstone dissects, observes, and comments on the successes and failures of her own life with surprising candor and spot-on comedic timing in this unique laugh-out-loud book.

If you like Paula Poundstone’s ironic and blindingly intelligent humor, you’ll love this wryly observant, funny, and touching book.

Paula Poundstone on . . .

The sources of her self-esteem: “A couple of years ago I was reunited with a guy I knew in the fifth grade. He said, “All the other fifth-grade guys liked the pretty girls, but I liked you.” It’s hard to know if a guy is sincere when he lays it on that thick.

The battle between fatigue and informed citizenship: I play a videotape of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer every night, but sometimes I only get as far as the theme song (da da-da-da da-ah) before I fall asleep. Sometimes as soon as Margaret Warner says whether or not Jim Lehrer is on vacation I drift right off. Somehow just knowing he’s well comforts me.

The occult: I need to know exactly what day I’m gonna die so that I don’t bother putting away leftovers the night before.

TV’s misplaced priorities: Someday in the midst of the State of the Union address they’ll break in with, “We interrupt this program to bring you a little clip from Bewitched.”

Travel: In London I went to the queen’s house. I went as a tourist—she didn’t invite me so she could pick my brain: “What do you think of my face on the pound? Too serious?”

Air-conditioning in Florida: If it were as cold outside in the winter as they make it inside in the summer, they’d put the heat on. It makes no sense.

The scandal: The judge said I was the best probationer he ever had. Talk about proud.

With a foreword by Mary Tyler Moore

4 out of 5 stars There's nothing in this book that I meant to say by Paula Poundstone.......2007-08-06

This is a funny book... I listened to it in my car on five CDs. Paula has been through a lot and yet she has not lost her sense of humor. If you ever get the chance to go see her live, don't miss it. She is one of the quickest and the best at adLib that I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Humor, History and Humility.......2007-07-29

What do Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Beethoven, Charles Dickens,The Wright Brothers and Sitting Bull all have in common? Isn't it obvious? Paula Poundstone of course.

Ms. Poundstone makes both humorous and serious parallels with these historical figures as she goes back and forth between her life and theirs. We not only learn about her own history, we learn about her wry views on life, recovery from her addiction and her number one priority-her three children. As an added bonus we may even be motivated to read more about the people whose names are the titles of the seven chapters.

I especially appreciated her frank discussion of her alcoholism in terms of acceptance, taking responsibility as well as making amends to those whose lives were most affected, her children.

Well done Paula!

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant, rambling read.......2007-07-26

This book feels a lot like listening to a Paula Poundstone comedy routine. She starts off on one topic and you never know where you will end up. I was pleasantly surprised by how personal she was willing to get when talking about her recent substance problems. She did so with much grace and self-deprecating humor. I just love her wit and found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.

4 out of 5 stars There's Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say.......2007-06-08

Great book. She writes with raw honesty and gentle humour. While reading the book, you feel like you're having a great heart to heart talk, with a good friend.

5 out of 5 stars Nayslove.......2007-05-12

If you are a fan of Paula's, you will LOVE this book! If you aren't and are looking for a good read, you will enjoy the history lesson and fall in love with her. I laughed so hard I had tears rolling. It is both poignant and hysterically funny. She is brilliant as a comic, and now as an author.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Book.......2006-07-31

I was looking for a spanish book that talked about something other than just objects. I also like the drawings and that the book is very simple. My 1 year old can really enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-26

We're trying to teach our daughter Spanish from an early age (she's 8 months), and reading stories to her each night. This book is pretty simplistic with two - four words per page ("sad, con triste") so it's over pretty fast. Perhaps for an older toddler who can interact a bit more and understand the meaning it would be suitable but it's not helpful right now.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to any Spanish lesson.......2005-10-14

I use this book in my classes for students ages 4 all the way to 18. It's a great, and SIMPLE way to help them express themselves in Spanish! The older teens crack up as they use the phrases, but it's great because they're communicating in their target language, and the younger students all identify with the bright pictures and sturdy pages. They LOVE using the phrases from Como me siento!

If you want something to listen to and write in- a complete curriculum, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2005-08-04

I loved this book. It teaches little ones about feelings in English and Spanish. Is hard to find books in spanish to teach my little girl. We both loved it. It was a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Help children learn feeling words.......2001-08-02

This simple book is a neat way to teach young children how to express themselves using feeling words. The pictures are bright and engaging. There is no story line, but that allows you to make up stories as you look at the pictures with your young children...

3 out of 5 stars A MOUSE TALE ON TWO CONTINENTS.......2007-06-26

Lawson's 1939 spoof of the life of Benjamin Franklin in his elder years proves delightful literary fluff and a quick read for kids of all ages. It may even serve as a spring board to true history in middle school. This easy introduction to the Colonial era will entertain elementary schoolchildren with its mouse's eye view of Philadelphia and of France. Having decided to make his way in the world, though not too far from his extensive family who reside in penury in a church Vestry, Amos moves in with an inquisitive and enterprising older gent named Ben Franklin. Despite the vast difference in size--and seeming incompatibility of species--these two great minds are able to converse with ease.

The clever houseguest credits himself with much (unrecognized)
inspiration for the author of POOR RICHARD'S ALMANC. Amos shares his more opinions and suggestions on a variety of topics: the printing press, the portable stove, lightning, electricity--in fact he actually helps Ben prove that they are one and the same phenomenon. (Apparently spectacles were invented Before Amos moved in.) The only time their staunch friendship is seriously threatened is when Ben betrays mouse trust and his own word by using the little fellow in a dangerous meteorological experiment.

This humorous version of Ben's later years culminates in a mock preview of the French revolution (on a mouse scale, of course). The unfortunate result? the American diplomat was banned from the palace of Versailles, but what matter, so long as Sophia's family was rescued and reunited. It is truly amazing how mouse lives parallel human endeavor... By the time of Ben's 81st birthday Amos--ever the bachelor--is content to relax and enjoy the antics of the younger generation. He figures that Ben is old enough to manage his affairs pretty much on his own. The moral seems to be: When a man is not smart enough to assume the credit, a Mouse may boldly step in!

3 out of 5 stars Book Report - Ben and Me.......2007-04-29

I read the book Ben and Me. This book is interesting. In the story, a lonely, rude, gray mouse named Amos finds Benjamin Franklin's house and sleeps in it. Amos becomes Benjamin's only pet and together they make their own, hot, big Franklin Stove. One cold, stormy, night Benjamin puts Amos on his big kite so Amos keeps getting shocked by lighting. Then, Amos and Benjaman go on a huge, wooden, brown ship to Paris and they become famous. A nice, pretty, girl rat named Sophia tells Amos that there are children stuck under the queen's throne. Amos calls all of the other mice in Paris to go save the children and together they do. I learned some interesting facts. I learned that Benjamin Franklin invented something called the Franklin Stove. I also learned that Benjamin Franklin had a gray mouse named Amos. Then, I learned that Benjamin loved inventing new machines. I would recommend this book for three reasons. First, I would recommend this book because it is well written with plenty of the adjectives. Second, I would recommend this book because it tells you a lot of information about Benjamin Franklin and his mouse Amos. Finally, I would recommend this book because it tells you what Benjamin Franklin liked to do when he was alive. Ben and Me is a great book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Ben and Me.......2007-04-15

ISBN 0440420385 (which now belongs to another book) - Really well-done, tongue in cheek "biography" of Benjamin Franklin, a man who is "undeniably stupid at times", according to Amos, the mouse, whose brilliant ideas seem to be all that stand between Franklin and certain death with his crazy experiments.

Amos, oldest of 26 children, comes from a family of church mice. Knowing how hard it is to feed such a brood, Amos sets out to try to find some way to help his family and stumbles into the home of Ben Franklin. Ben is sneezing away in a room thick with smoke from the fireplace until Amos gives him almost every detail Ben needs to create the famous Franklin Stove. Thrilled to have such a great mind at hand, Franklin works out an agreement with Amos and the two go on living and working together. When the Revolutionary War takes a financial toll on Washington's army, the two go to France to borrow from the French and Amos is able, with a great deal of help, to save one beautiful female mouse named Sophia and her seven children. After this final adventure, Amos is ready to settle down to a quiet life in his old age and thinks Ben should, too.

The back cover says the book is for ages 8-12. I think it might be a little tough for 8 year olds, with a large number of big words, but it's amusing enough that an 8 year old might make the effort to learn the words and expand their vocabulary. For the parents who worry about every little word in every book their kid reads, there's a couple disparaging "stupids" and one sentence that has Ben Franklin "tossing off" a shot of brandy. For those who just want their kid to enjoy a book and learn new words, this one's WELL worth it.

5 out of 5 stars By Mr. Dude Man.......2007-03-23

There are many boring, dull biographies on Benjamin Franklin. Then there is Ben and Me written by Robert Lawson, which is not the case. It is a Mr. Lawson calls it "A new and astonishing life on Benjamin Franklin as written by his good mouse AMOS."
It starts out in Philadelphia, where Amos, the oldest mouse of a huge family, leaves home in search of food and shelter. Bitterly cold, he stumbles upon Ben Franklin's house, goes inside and spots Ben Franklin's fur cap to warm up in. Ben notices him, but instead of shooting him, he enjoys Amos' company. After being together a little while Amos has already come up with a successful idea for an experiment for Ben, which was later named the "Franklin Stove".
Ben now thinks that this little mouse would be a great (talking) animal to have around the house for as an assistant. Next thing you know they are making an agreement where Ben will provide just what he was looking for ¬¬ food for him and food delivery for his family, plus the old warm fur hat to hang out in. And all the mouse has to do is hanging out and make comments, or as Ben calls it to "give advice."
It sounds like an ideal plan for Amos until two things happen. Ben takes up electrical experiments and Amos becomes the testing guinea pig. On one occasion Ben attempts to find out if lighting is electric. Amos was then strapped to a kite in the middle of a thunderstorm. He was up there for about a half hour to find out. His answer was `yes'.
It was a great book where Amos, the little mouse follows Ben through his life. I would recommend this book to anyone 6-10 years old.

4 out of 5 stars Cornwall,NY sixth Grader.......2007-03-08

I am a sixth grader. The book I read was "Ben and Me".I find this book very interesting for the fact that such a well known inventor got ideas from a mouse. The mouses name was Amos. This is one of those books that if you read the first chapter, your going to want to read more.

This books is about Ben Fraklin and his best friend whom was a mouse named Amos.Amos lived in a broken down old christ church with twenty-six other kids in his family. This story takes place in the city of philadelphia. One day amos decided he had enough of his life.So he went out into the world and happend to go in Ben Franklins house.Amos and Ben become very good friends and bond alot because they only had each other.

This book tells a classic story. You should read it some time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning how to 'be' your true self with others.........2007-03-31

I agree with the reviewer below - ignore the San Jose reviewer. The title describes exactly what it delivers.. Helping people show their 'real' selves. I'm a Clinical Psychologist, and I recommend this to clients who struggle with social anxiety/social phobia.. but also to any clients who are struggling with low self esteem, or social insecurity at any level.. I think it's an excellent book, written simply and clearly, with straightforward suggestions to effect change, and challenge yourself to be your true self with others..

5 out of 5 stars Who am I?.......2004-06-10

First of all, I must warn you not to pay attention to the reviewer from San Jose... they are either brain dead or have not read the book (I'm sure it's the latter), because this book has already changed my life perspective with reading only the first few chapters. I have never said that about a book and I have hundreds in my library.

I have been a fearful person for most of my life... fearful of what others might think of me, so I put on a facade each day and try to be someone who I am not... I'm 34 years old and living a constant facade has left me with very few meaningful relationships and constant bouts of depression.

I bought this book a while back, but I never started reading it until June 8th 2004. I have been in a state of depression now for about 3 months and I have been praying and asking God to change me and to allow me to learn how to love other people instead of avoiding and being afraid of them and what they might think of me.

God has answered my prayers with this book. I have read only a few chapters and it feels like the shell inside me that I have been building for years has been cracked and the real me is beginning to emerge. What a liberating feeling. My depression and my focus on myself is diminishing at an unbelievable rate.

I have always had suspicions of others thoughts about me. I create a fantasy life of imagining what they might be thinking about me, so to avoid rejection, I keep my distance and act cool and aloof in there presence. Meanwhile I go on in my lonliness with my insides unknowingly crying out to communicate to others. In reality, my imagination of what they think about me probably doesn't even come close to what they really think.

I started reading this book only a day ago, and I can already see a monumental difference in the way I am communicating with others around me... fearless and loving are two words that I can describe my feelings toward others now... and in only one day... unbelievable! Seeing as I have always been fearful and bitter toward most other people.

This may be the most "perspective changing" or possibly "life changing" book I have ever read, that remains to be seen, but I am already ordering other books from John Powell.

If you have been lonely, depressed, afraid to speak in front of others or voice your opionion for fear of being rejected... wait no longer......

BUY THIS BOOK NOW! YOUR LIFE IS WAITING FOR YOU!

The ancient Greeks philosophy has been condensed into two words... "KNOW THYSELF". This book will help you find the real you.

2 out of 5 stars when [possibly] good books have *really* awful titles..........2003-08-01

Sorry -- I'm evaluating some communication books for a large organization -- and I just couldn't get past the title. How could any business person recommend this to a large group of peers...with a straight face...or expect them to take it seriously? Possibly the first rule of good communication, especially when presenting one's written advice and expertise to complete strangers...is to craft a title that actually says something.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidelines for communication.......2000-02-08

In this book are guidelines for communication in deep personal relationship. It is written in a spirit of acceptance and treasuring the other as well as of oneself. As well as other books of this author this book too helped me a lot by personal growth. I found in them a lot of answers or confirmations of my feelings or thoughts, I felt I am not alone,... I often leaned on these ideas when feeling anguish because of rejection or misunderstandings, ...when I was hurt or afraid...it helped me to see forward and I am very thankful for that

September 26) to some good sound practical advice (I am entitled to file for an Extension on my Income Taxes!  April 15th), Stuart's affirmations will empower you!

Work, Friendship, Love, Spirituality, Codependency, Self-Esteem, Acceptance...Stuart deals with it all.  And as you share his ups and downs, his triumphs and shame spirals, you will come to see the ultimate truth of Stuart's March 21st affirmation:  Today I Will Laugh--At Least Once!

4 out of 5 stars I Wish I Had Read This Book Two Years Ago.......2005-09-27

I think it really would have helped. This book is supposed to be daily affirmations, but basically is Stuart's year long diary. He is a member of several 12 step programs, and has really learned a lot from them, and has made friends who also attend them. One thing he hasn't learned from these meetings is leave his extremely dysfunctional family alone and quit trying to solve their problems for them. What I like about his book:
    Let go of the result.
If you're scared to do something, go ahead and do it, and you'll wish you'd done it a lot sooner.

    What I thought was improbable:
Stuart taking multiple plane flights to visit his family.
Stuart going to bed for weeks at a time with Oreos, Hydrox, etc.
Stuart never has any day-to-day problems that the rest of us have.
His friends always have plenty of time on their hands to try to get him to get out of his bed and open up his door.
Andrea losing 140 lbs in about 10 months.

But other than that, this book has a lot to say. Franken is quite knowledgeable about codependency. It's worth reading, but you must have a sense of humour.

5 out of 5 stars I Can Enjoy This Book.......2003-05-04

I have read all of Al Franken's books up to this point with the exception of this one. I had been a fan of Franken since his days of Saturday Night Live, particularly his Stuart Smalley character. This book further demonstrates the depth and intelligence of his humor.

The book is very similar to the movie based on it (Stuart Saves His Family). Having already seen the movie, I was anticipating certain events in the book once I started reading. Despite my previous knowledge, I found the book to be laugh out loud funny. The humor of the Stuart Smalley character is based in him trying to help out others, yet being a mess himself as is demonstrated by his membership in several support groups.

Even people passing through my home who picked this book up from my coffee table and read a few pages have enjoyed what they read. It is not hard to get the joke. This is a easy, but fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny - great gift for people in Recovery.......2002-05-09

When Stuart Smalley first came out I didn't quite see the appeal. Now with 5 years in The Program, I finally get the joke. I have lent this book to a lot of folks in my home group and we all agree that it's pretty impossible not to laugh out loud while reading it. What a funny, smart insightful man. Seriously one of the funniest books I've ever read, though I might not have "gotten it" without my familiarity with 12 step programs.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Funny No Matter What Mood I'm In.......2002-04-14

I keep this book right here beside me in my home office, so any time I need to get perspective on life I can open it to some random page and read one of Stuart's daily affirmations. Whether I'm in a good mood or feeling down, this book always picks me up! Thanks to Stuart, I now know that "I don't have to beat myself up", "I deserve good things", and "I refuse to live from crisis to crisis"! I have to keep reminding myself about that last one, because my computer connection keeps dropping out as I try to type this review.

I'M GOOD ENOUGH tells the story of how Stuart Smalley (a caring nurturer and a member of several twelve step programs, but not a licensed therapist) deals with his inner critic and his dysfunctional family through the pages of his daily journal. I won't give away the plot, but will just give you a hint that there are lots of ups and downs in Stuart's career and family which help him grow in unexpected ways (such as the day when he notes "This Time I Was in Bed for Only Five Days!")

If you ever need to laugh with love at life's foibles, this is the book for you! OK -- I'm not saying you HAVE to get this book, because then I would be telling you what to do. You are in control of your own life, and things are not black and white! So get this book if your feelings about how you feel about it feel right. I think you'll be glad you did!

    Book Description

In the best-selling tradition of Kids Say the Darndest Things and Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, this warm and funny book offers 147 truly wise parenting tips in the words and handwriting of kids who don't always know how to spell, but always know what they need.

If kids came with an instruction manual, this would be it -- a clever and poignant collection of suggestions, observations and reminders to parents from the experts themselves (kids 6-12).  Organized into three sections:  (Love and Caring, Family and Friends, and Guidance and Independence), these one- or two-line requests will bring a smile to your face, a lump to your throat, and a renewed sense of confidence that you can give your kids the love and support they deserve.

These kids tell it like it is -- straight from the heart and right on target. You could not ask for better or more touching advice. And the fact that its in the kids' own handwriting gives it a very special warmth and appeal. My wife and I give out this book (a lot!) for baby showers. It's the perfect gift.

I read about 10 pages of this book and I knew I needed it. Any parent that can read this book from cover to cover without sheding a tear needs to be nominated for parent of the century. Tear some of these pages out and place them around the house so you can remember that your kids are just that... KIDS! They were not meant to run a household or cook dinner.. they are KIDS.. let them enjoy life.

Read this book.. I ordered two books.. one for me and one for my ex-wife.

    Book Description

Eric Schaeffer has always believed that when the time was right and he was ready that he would find the Big One (an intelligent, sexy, loving wife).
But his last girlfriend said no to his proposal, and since then he hasn’t met anyone he wanted to have a second date with. This is a wild, sometimes raunchy, sometimes poignant, and always honest account of a semi-famous man’s attempts at love.

    1 out of 5 stars Still a narcissist.......2007-09-20

Ever wonder why recovering alcoholics and drug-addicts are so often still happy to remain raging narcissists? Here's another shining example of one of them. I think it's high time for a thirteenth step in the Program.

1 out of 5 stars Eric Schaeffer gives yoga a bad name.......2007-09-03

This has to be the worst book I've read since Prozac Nation. Same narcissistic logorrhea. Pretends to be honest with himself, but it's amazing how blind he remains throughout. I have enough confidence in yoga to think if he keeps practicing he might get there, but I found nothing redemptive in 317 pages. He doesn't even like himself enough to breathe between dates. He's the guy you run from, believe me.

A much better read, and real self honesty, though not a great book either, is Sex, Love, and Dharma. This guy hasn't found the one either, but he's a LOT closer, and his path seems way more genuine.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-08-31

This book had my attention from beginning until the end. It was hilarious, thought provoking, real, and emotionally insightful. Eric has obviously evolved such that he is comfortable revealing those inner most thoughts and feelings which most of us would rather die than verbalize to another person. I will encourage all of my friends.....who strive for self awareness......to take this journey.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, sweet, insane, warm, in your face, and polarizing.......2007-08-28

I am surprised at the amount of anger this book has received. Eric Schaeffer is opening showing his entire life, good and bad, under a brilliant and well written light. You don't have to like him or respect his choices, but the fearlessness of his honesty is inspiring.

Is his life for everyone? No, but the point of the book isn't Mr. Schaeffer telling the world it would be better if only it was entirely like him. If fact he starts the book saying that's not the case.

The sometimes hilarious, sometimes frustrating choices he makes can be polorizing, but I don't think it deserves the spite some people are giving it.

And I don't think he gives a bad name to Yoga, I think he gives a real quality to it. Nobody is perfect all the time. Nobody is anything all the time. We just strive to be the best person we can be in singular moments of our lives. That is what Eric Schaeffer is trying to do, and I applaud him for it.

    1 out of 5 stars A Self Review.......2007-08-23

Like all arrogant and delusional men, I've always believed that when I was ready, I could easily land a smart, funny, sexy, warm, loving wife. "When you build it, she will come." That's what I've been told all my life by my mommy, and she is very objective. "The girls are just going to line up when you say the word." Well, I'm ready. I've made several crappy movies that have been unanimously hated by critics and audiences everywhere. That's quite an accomplishment, wouldn't you say? After all, there are a lot of commercial movies that get bad reviews, and a lot of well-reviewed movies that do terribly in the box office, but both critics and audiences agree that my films suck.

All this and I can't even meet someone who will put up with my innocent questions on the first date (have you ever been raped by your father?), or who are attracted by my candor ("nice breasts"--also on the first date), or who feel sorry enough for desperate little me to marry me. There's no justice in this world.

I fooled my last girlfriend for quite some time, but in the end she saw the light and left me on my knee with a ring in my hands and tears in my eyes. Since then I've tried speed dating, Yentas, blind dates, Internet dating, meeting girls at the gym and yoga, on the subway and on the street. Actresses, models, lawyers, social workers, teachers, comediennes, even hookers, special massage girls and dominatrixes and nothing! I know I reek of desperation, but it's an attractive scent! Seriously. Just come near me and sniff me. I'll do the same with you.

I simply cannot believe I'm still single at 45. This is my story. Just a regular unattractive moron looking for love and unable to find it... for the rest of my life.

    Book Description

If being perfect is a prerequisite to getting into heaven, then Charity Phillips has earned her seat in the Kingdom. This accomplished single mother is an exceptional therapist with her own hot, new counseling firm, Horizons Counseling Center, and a minister at her church. While the pressures of these dual roles are challenging, she single-handedly overcomes them all. But when a whirlwind of trouble suddenly blows into her life and threatens not only her business but also the custody of her son, she loses it and finds herself in a very dark place. Add to this an undeniable attraction to the prison inmate who keeps sending her love letters, complications with a schizophrenic patient, and differences among three women in her office with sometimes explosive temperaments, and chaos erupts in the life of a Christian woman who prides herself on being able to handle everything.

I read this book in one day. I could not put it down. I loved the scriptures quoted throughout the book for different situations. It made me learn a lot about scripture and the art of prayer. Charity could always revert back to her bible, no matter the situation revealed to her. I have purchased this book to pass along to friends. A WONDERFUL read!

4 out of 5 stars Food for Thought..........2007-01-04

A great book and a fast, thought provoking, read. The author sucessfully challenges some of the things we "Christians" tend to believe about ourselves.

    For instance:
-Is it really possible to be a perfect Christian?
-Are we missing the point by trying to achieve perfection?
-What prejudices do we (who are not supposed to be judging others) hold fast to?
These are some of the questions/concepts raised in "Good To Me." They make an interesting list of topics with great spinoff potential for book club discussion.

Overall, the book is an entertaining mix of likeable characters and an interesting (if a bit predictable) plot. A good buy.

    3 out of 5 stars Saved But. . ........2006-07-30

Good to Me, written by LaTonya Mason, is a drama-filled story about Charity Phillips. Charity rises above her unpleasant childhood to become an ordained minister, a certified therapist and a businesswoman. The story begins with the opening of Charity's business, Horizon's Christian Counseling. We see Charity's strong belief in God and how she applies her Christian beliefs in her counseling sessions. However, her faith is tested and she learns about the frailty of the human spirit.

A series of events, happening all at once, really push Charity to the edge. She cannot handle all these events and is ready to give up. However, Charity's family and friends rally around her, giving her all the support and love she needs to see her through her circumstances. Her faith in God grows and she accepts the fact that she cannot do it all by herself. God works through people and Charity discovers that the people in her life are there ready and willing to love, support her and keep her balanced.

Mason writes very well, and the story is easy to follow and read. She integrates scriptures and prayers so seamlessly into the story that they are not contrived or an afterthought. As easy as this story is to read, however, some of the events have credibility issues. Without going into specifics and revealing too much of the plot, some of the events are just too convenient. One example is when Charity's circumstances causes her to cry out for help, it is convenient that the person she just happens to talk to is related to someone else. Some other events are just as convenient.

For those of you who want to read a story that shows how God works through people and the importance of family and friends, then give Mason's book a try. The scriptures and prayers alone will inspire you to keep the faith, believe and trust in God.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Ministry Work.......2006-05-25

Latonya Mason has captured the true essence of ministry in this book. I cried, prayed, praised God and of course, laughed while reading this book. "Good To Me" will minister to your Spirit!

    Job Well Done Ms. Mason!!!!

    Alisha M.

5 out of 5 stars It certainly is Good...and let the church say AMEN!!!!.......2006-05-24

LaTonya Mason's Good To Me definitely deserves high praises in the world of Christian fiction.

All I can say is that you feel the power of the Holy Spirit throughout the story! This book is a living testimony to Christians everywhere that God did not promise us a bed of roses but that we would have trials and tribulations in this life but JOY does come in the morning!!!!

Charity is delightful, Pastor King is funny, April is wonderful, Iesha is marvelous, Terrence is the embodiment of a good Christian brother, Mama Lorraine is too much, Mimister Adams is a mess and Minister Jospeh Nelson is a beautiful example of how the Lord can fix you up and use you for his glory!!!!

Thank you Ms. Mason for not just an enjoyable read but a spirit-filled reading experience that makes the reader know that God is more than enough regardless of what life may bring your way!

I am looking forward to your next novel! May God continue to anoint you with powerful stories of HIS mercy and grace!
