Book Description
Every year, thousands of undocumented migrants attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, and every year, the Minutemen, a volunteer group of citizens who patrol the border, try to stop them. As the debate over immigration became increasingly fierce and polarized, three friends came up with an ingenious idea to both clarify and humanize the complexities of the issue.
For three months, Rudy Adler, Victoria Criado, and Brett Huneycutt distributed hundreds of disposable cameras, along with the means of returning them, to migrants and Minutemen so they could document their own journeys. The friends received over two thousand photographs that present both sides of the issueand reveal the harsh realities on the ground. Capturing images from both sides of the border, Border Film Project tells the stories that no news piece, policy debate, or academic study could possibly convey.
Customer Reviews:
It's an outstanding documentary .......2007-07-27
BORDER FILM PROJECT: PHOTOS BY MIGRANT AND MINUTEMEN ON THE US-MEXICO BORDER could also have been featured in our 'arts' or 'social issues' sections, but is reviewed here for its outstanding documentary value. The authors distributed hundreds of disposable cameras, along with means of returning them, to migrants and Minutemen so they could document their own border and immigration experiences. BORDER FILM PROJECT gathers these images under one cover, pairs them with personal stories which go far beyond the usual news report, and accompanies a traveling exhibition. It's an outstanding documentary highly recommended for any collection strong in photography, social issues, and immigrant issues.

A Legal Thriller.......2006-11-02
Hurrah for another 'Third Coast' Author. Texas style!! Shelia Dansby Harvey has created a host of legal characters that will take you there and then some.
Player-Omar Faxton, trusting-Callie Stephens, Comforter-Keith and 'Hellraiser-Raven Holloway' are forces to be dealt with. Sex, lies and a criminal element adds to the twist of this story as an 'innocent and naive' Callie Stephens schools Omar and Raven on litigation, overcoming and sweet revenge in her own guileless way.
Shelia's story telling is on the same scale as an Irish Johenson, Tom Clancy-minus all the chatter, and Walter Mosley who's at the top of his game. Way to go Shelia. Can't wait to finish, Bad Girls Finish First.
Thanks for keeping it real here on the 'Third Coast'.
Author, M.W.Moore

Illegal Affairs is a page turner for REAL!!! I enjoyed ever bit of Illegal Affairs and thought what can happen next! I was so into Illegal Affair and just couldn't get enough until the very end. Keep up the good work Shelia and I can't wait until your next release.
best book ever.......2005-06-17
This is the best book that I have read in a long time. Callie was a lot better than me because I think I would have to give Raven a beat down. Omar was a dog but I have to say he was way beyond any dogs I ever met. All in all I hope there is sequel to this book. Great job Shelia Dansby Harvey
Please make this legal.......2005-05-11
As a person who is going to lawschool but am working on my Bachelors, this book made me want to rethink my efforts. After reading the reviews I went out and couldn't wait to start this great piece of work. Well.....
Omar Faxton was a jerk throughout the whole book and I never understood the point. Why was he that way? Was it because of his mother who was killed? Was it because his real parents didn't raise him? Who knows and by the middle of the book, who cares?
Raven Holloway was a total mess. Why was she so bitter? I never understood her point either.
Callie Stevens. I never understood her moods. One day she had a backbone and then another day she was pained over her father's suicide but then the next day she was a total naive puppet.
The other main characters were just as confusing as the rest. I never got into why and how the Prince Anderson was involved. Please someone explain to me why his chapter was even put in the book.
I'm sorry Illegal Affairs definitely was not worth breaking up a marriage for.

The fall of the Soviet Republic and the resulting economic recession has created a huge surge in illicit activity as a desperate population struggles to simply survive. To those in the West, the most significant factor in this new wave of crime is the illegal movement of nuclear material, documented by Foreign Policy Research Institute associate Rensselaer W. Lee III in Smuggling Armageddon. In a concise report, Lee brings us to the terrifying conclusion that there is genuine cause for alarm.
Smuggling Armageddon is meticulously researched and carefully attested to--the author makes it very clear when enough information doesn't exist to draw concrete conclusions. Lee understatedly describes a dichotomy of nuclear crime in the modern-day Soviet states: inept would-be smugglers who sell bogus material coexist with the real threat of high-level corruption and a shadow network with both access to fissionable materials and the ability to move them undetected. Smuggling Armageddon is a wake-up call for the United States, demanding a decisive change in existing counterproliferation strategies. --Brendan J. LaSalle
Book Description
Smuggling Armageddon looks at one of the most important and troubling international concerns of the 1990s and beyond: the illegal trade in nuclear materials that has erupted in the Newly-Independent States (NIS) and Europe since the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Lee raises the central yet seldom-asked question of whether such traffic poses a threat of consequence to international security and stability. Lee unveils a grim picture that shows a Russia characterized by a variety of criminal proliferation channels, a Russia where smuggling operations are becoming progressively more sophisticated, and a Russia whose nuclear stockpiles already may have suffered serious leakages of weapons-usable materials. Lee's groundbreaking study then concludes by assessing the implications of study findings for U.S. policy and by offering insights on the future of the NIS smuggling industry. Smuggling Armageddon is a book that is sure to provoke controversy and to raise the specter of nuclear destruction once again.
Customer Reviews:
As clear on the subject as is possible........1998-12-24
Mr. Lee has taken this obscure but, currently vital topic of concern to a level of understanding based on the little information actually available on the smuggling of nuclear materials. His text is careful to explain that there is a lot of ambiguity and concern for facts in his statements. It is very clear that the actual materials successfully smuggled is not and will probably never be known. His lists and charts are a big help in understanding why people try to smuggle these terrifying products. His information is carefully researched and documented with a large array of footnotes in a block section at the end of the book. Although it is a small book, it represents a very large amount of available data condensed into one place. The information about the involvement of government officials and the manipulations of the Russian Mafia show how convoluted this racket can become and why they are getting away with it. In short, he has tackled an obscure subject in the same way he approached the Andean Cocaine trade. The book is an easy and alarming read.

Book Description
The U.S.-Mexico border is the busiest in the world, the longest and most dramatic meeting point of a rich and poor country, and the site of intense confrontation between law enforcement and law evasion. Border control has changed in recent years from a low-maintenance and politically marginal activity to an intensive campaign focusing on drugs and migrant labor. Yet the unprecedented buildup of border policing has taken place in an era otherwise defined by the opening of the border, most notably through NAFTA. This contrast creates a borderless economy with a barricaded border.
Peter Andreas argues that the sharp escalation in law enforcement provides a political mechanism for coping with the unintended consequences of past policy choices. Law enforcement is enthusiastically embraced as a remedy for the very problems state practices have helped to create. The high-profile display of force, Andreas emphasizes, has ultimately been less about deterring illegal crossings and more about re-crafting the image of the border and symbolically reaffirming the state's territorial authority.
Extending the analysis to the borders of the European Union, Andreas identifies different forms of law enforcement escalation that reflect distinct historical legacies and regional contexts. Andreas challenges the notion that borders are irrelevant in an age of globalization and stresses that, rather than eroding, some critical borders are being reinforced and remade.

What the heck is our Congress thinking of???? This book clearly lays out how easy it will be for terrorist to get us by easily crossing the border at will. Why is this still so??? If you like this book you should also read, "U.S. Customs, Badge of Dishonor" another narrative of our Government's border blunders.

As numerous assassinations and a notoriously violent crime illustrate, Mexico is in the midst of a power struggle between the forces of corruption and organized crime--fueled principally by drug money--and those working to continue a transition to an electoral democracy. These problems, as Sebastian Rotella chronicles vividly in Twilight on the Line: Underworlds and Politics at the U.S.-Mexico Border, flow over into America as well. As a result of the success of the Drug Enforcement Agency in blocking drugs (mainly Colombian cocaine) from entering through Florida, drug lords began looking to the vulnerable U.S.-Mexican border as a route for their contraband, a shift that exacerbated not only the flow of drugs, but of illegal immigrants as well. To explain the broader problem, Rotella focuses on individuals working for justice in Mexico, explaining in great detail the difficulties men such as Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo and presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio encountered in working for change. Both men, along with countless others, were gunned down for daring to stand up to the crime bosses. As the Los Angeles Times bureau chief for Latin America, Rotella is well acquainted with the subject, deftly analyzing the social and political repercussions of the brutal drug trade in both countries. Though he offers no real solutions to the problems (of course, the same could be said of stymied Mexican officials), he does convey the desperate situation with compassion and honesty.
Customer Reviews:
An intense and insightful view of Mexico/US border issues........2001-05-08
A terrific journalist, Sebastian Rotella was the LA Times guy in Mexico, now he's in South America. This is a great read for anyone who wonders what goes on at the border besides guards, people spilling over walls and American teens going to Tijuana to drink. He explores both sides of the fence and scratches the surface to find out what lies beneath.
Enthralling.......2001-04-08
This is a captivating book about the amazing underworld and life of the US/Mexico border between Tijuana and San Diego. Rotella did many in depth interviews and first-person research in writing this book. The reader can feel the desperation of those he met with and quotes frequently, several of whom have been killed in the past few years for their efforts to end corruption and drug trafficking in Mexico. For anyone not familiar with the corruption and assassination scandals to come out of Mexico in the past decade, this book will simply amaze you. For those who are more familiar with Mexico's political situation and how it relates to the U.S.'s southern border, and the people directly affected by immigration there, this book is still an informational, emotional account worth reading.
An outstanding and fascinating revelation of the border.......1999-12-03
From the first page, you will not be able to stop until the last one. Backed with a deep professional research, this story of real life is told in such an intelligent narrative style that it seems like a novel. Clever, entertaining, revealing and enjoyable. A must!
Vivid prose, keen insight........1998-07-21
Vivid descriptions and compelling scenarios make this book such fascinating reading that it's disappointing to discover that "Twilight" focuses almost exclusively on Tijuana, while ignoring the other 1980 miles of the border. The description of the Colosio investigations get a bit tedious, but overall the book provides excellent reading on a timely topic.
Insightful description of a Mexican narckingdom-Tijuana.......1998-06-23
Excellent book, illustrating the fusion of drugs, money, and politics. Comparing events in Tijuana with say, Juarez one can see similarities. Now citizens can read about what top U.S. policy makers have known and used to their advantage since the 80's. Mexico's govt. policy seeks to control and ensure that this largest source of dollars floating through its economy is protected. Mexico is ruled by roughly four kingdoms made up of: traffickers, PRIista, Zedillo's cabinet, military, fed, state and local officals--talk about overhead! These people all have the most to lose, especially the PRI. Thus, Clinton's efforts to provide military aid and advisors will only bolster the supression of the people of Mexico---its El Salvador with a little bit of Nicaragua, a dash of Guatemala and a smattering of Columbia. Now that the author has given us a slice of the micro, hopefully he will expand it into the macro.

Book Description
Illegal immigrants constitute a major issue in southern European countries through their large presence in the labour markets and their participation in (hence perpetuation of) underground economies. This book is not only the first published piece of comparative research in the area but also one of the few publications giving a comparative analysis of southern European immigration policies. The detailed accounts of each country's pattern of informal employment of immigrants are located within a broader setting of contemporary southern European immigration controls and - in particular - of illegal migration and illegal employment in Europe.
