When Dr. Sybill Griffin shows up in the sleepy town of St. Christopher, Philip makes room in his hectic schedule for the mysterious woman who stirs his senses and threatens to steal his heart. 4 out of 5 stars A very pleasant read (or listen).......2006-08-11

This book, which is a part of a trilogy, doesn't let you down if you are a reader of Nora Roberts. It will make you feel good and keeps you interested with the dipiction of the main characters, three "brothers," who have been adopted after experiencing extremely difficult childhoods and develope into very exciting, exceptional adults. The trilogy is about the power of love and how it can overcome extremely difficult barriers.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2006-06-06

I did not read the other books in the series, but i absolutly loved this one. I couldn't put it down for the whole 2 days it took me to finish it. It's a great story with a great theme, and you actually feel like you're there. If you like any other Nora Roberts books then you have to read this one!

5 out of 5 stars Another great story.......2006-03-15

Another great Quinn story. And with an interesting twist to it too.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful ending to a wonderful series.......2006-02-10

Great story to complete the series. I like the way the new characters mix with my old favorites. The only problem is that is leaves you dieing to find out what happens to Seth. Read Chesapeake Blue to find out what happens to Seth

4 out of 5 stars must read if you've read the others.......2005-09-24

This series was a nice change of pace from heavier reading. Its enjoyable. The characters are entertaining. I liked the closure by including the 4th "son's" story. Occasionally the "family rallying around" borders on hokey, but then again, this is escapism so why not be inspirational and idealistic?

Set on the windswept shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Nora Roberts's Rising Tides, the second book in the Quinn Brothers trilogy, continues the story of the lives and loves of adopted brothers Ethan, Cameron, and Philip Quinn. Eager to honor their father's dying wish that their other brother, Seth, be cared for, the three settle into life with a 10-year-old. Of all the brothers, it is Ethan who finds himself drawn to the young boy, because both suffered horrific abuse before being adopted by the Quinns. Time hasn't extinguished Ethan's pain, only buried it deep within his heart, a fact that may keep him from the only woman he has ever loved. A moving contemporary with universal appeal, Rising Tides is Nora Roberts at her best.

5 out of 5 stars 2 WOW the second time around for a job well done on the 2nd book.......2006-02-10

Containing both emotion and power Roberts is able to portray Ethan Quinn in a fascinating way. While managing to keep in mind his patience and quiet ways, Roberts maintains the plot while still keeping readers happy and the characters thriving.

5 out of 5 stars Donna's Review.......2005-09-15

This book and the whole series is truly captivating. I always look for books like this and Nora Roberts knows how to capture an audiance.

I will read nothing but Nora Roberts from now on!

4 out of 5 stars Another Great One by Nora Roberts!.......2005-05-03

RISING TIDES is the second book in the Chesapeake Bay trilogy and focuses on Ethan. Ethan is the quiet brother who loves the ocean. He's the one who started the family boat-building business and not only works there, but also runs his commercial fishing boat. He's the one who tries to direct the brothers into a successful future business, but isn't afraid of the hard work involved in getting them to achieve that success.

Almost as a sub-plot is the fact that Ethan has been in love with Grace for as long as he can remember, but considers her off-limits because of a dark secret in his past. As he gently guides Seth (the newest adopted brother) into the future, he is led to accept his past by the ghost of his father and not to place blame on himself. It's an Interesting concept and very effective.

These two sub-plots are entwined, so you don't really understand which is more important until you learn the secret that is keeping Ethan from fully realizing his dreams. Once that secret is revealed, the sub-plots are merged. This sounds confusing, but is well written and flows nicely together.

This series just keeps getting better with each book! Nora Roberts shows wit, charm and romance in RISING TIDES. It's also a very different style for her (and her fans), as she's writing from a male perspective. As I was reading it, I realized I was seeing things through the eyes of Ethan, and not Grace. This writing style didn't draw me into "living" the story, but instead kept me as a very interested bystander.

This book is definitely worth reading. In fact the entire Chesapeake Bay trilogy is an excellent choice for entertainment reading.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2005-02-09

Ethan and Grace are perfect for eachother, but It got really irritating how he thought Grace was 'delicate' and 'fragile' expecially after she is raising a daughter alone and working such hard jobs. She stood up to him and that was cool. They really flow together.

Book Description

Nora Roberts presents her #1 New York Times bestselling novel, now in paperback.

Nora Roberts returns to Chesapeake Bay and her beloved Quinn family for the story of Seth Quinn. The conclusion to the breathtaking saga.

Download Description

"Seth Quinn is finally home. It's been a long journey. After a harrowing boyhood with his drug-addicted mother, he'd been taken in by the Quinn family, growing up with three older brothers who'd watched over him with love. Now a grown man returning from Europe as a successful painter, Seth is settling down on Maryland's Eastern Shore, surrounded once again by Cam, Ethan, and Phil, their wives and children, all the blessed chaos of the extended Quinn clan. Finally, he's back in the little blue-and-white house where there's always a boat at the dock, a rocker on the porch, and a dog in the yard. Still, a lot has changed in St. Christopher since he's been gone-and the most intriguing change of all is the presence of Dru Whitcomb Banks. A city girl who's opened a florist shop in this seaside town, she craves independence and the challenge of establishing herself without the influence of her wealthy connections. In Seth, she sees another kind of challenge-a challenge that she can't resist. But storms are brewing that are about to put their relationship to the test. Dru's past has made her sensitive to deception-and slow to trust. And Seth's past has made him a target of blackmail-as a secret he's kept hidden for years threatens to explode, destroying his new life and his new love. . . ."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-08-28

This is a well written ending to the Quinn story. This is the story of Seth, grown up from the earlier books in the series. This is one of my favorites that I re-read often. I recommend this entire series!

4 out of 5 stars Great, as per usual..........2007-08-02

I love Nora Roberts, and especially when she writes sagas. This fourth book in the Chesapeake Bay saga is great. I loved seeing Seth as a grown up, as well as the closeknit family dynamic. At first, I wasn't too sure about Dru but as the story went along she grew on me, and I think she's the perfect balance to Seth.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Little Time Filler.......2007-08-01

This was the first romance novel I'd ever picked up. It's been over two years since I first read it and I've reread it more times than I can count. The book offers very little in terms of character development or morals etc. that I usually hope to get out of a novel. Despite all this, it does make for a tasty morsel on a lonely night when you can't sleep.

Drew's strength and stubborness makes her a more believable character than the women in you classic "romance" novels. You had three "plot" elements to choose from: pirates; forced marriage; endless descriptions that take the reader to...more descriptions.

Thankfully, this novel provides a little insight into the mind of both the man and woman in the relationship. I recommend this book for those who are bored and need something to fill time. It's well written and artfully worded throughout. Definately a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-28

I finished reading this book. Very hard to put down. Reccomend to everyone. :o)

5 out of 5 stars It made me smile right from the beginning..........2007-07-25

Even though Nora Roberts is a wonderful storyteller, she is touch-and-go with me. I really like some of her books while others leave me feeling flat. There was no question with this one. It's a five star keeper and I haven't even read the others in the series. From the very beginning of the story it made me smile. It was the story, the sense of family, the feeling of home. Yes, the romance part seemed a little forced but considering the caliber of Nora Roberts' writing in comparison to many other writers I think that can be overlooked. It wasn't so forced as to take away from the overall feeling of the book.(What would be a really great effort from other writers we don't accept in exceptional authors.)I highly recommend this one.

The story starts out simply enough: Jess Aarons wants to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade--he wants it so bad he can taste it. He's been practicing all summer, running in the fields around his farmhouse until he collapses in a sweat. Then a tomboy named Leslie Burke moves into the farmhouse next door and changes his life forever. Not only does Leslie not look or act like any girls Jess knows, but she also turns out to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. After getting over the shock and humiliation of being beaten by a girl, Jess begins to think Leslie might be okay.

Despite their superficial differences, it's clear that Jess and Leslie are soul mates. The two create a secret kingdom in the woods named Terabithia, where the only way to get into the castle is by swinging out over a gully on an enchanted rope. Here they reign as king and queen, fighting off imaginary giants and the walking dead, sharing stories and dreams, and plotting against the schoolmates who tease them. Jess and Leslie find solace in the sanctuary of Terabithia until a tragedy strikes and the two are separated forever. In a style that is both plain and powerful, Katherine Paterson's characters will stir your heart and put a lump in your throat.

Book Description

All summer, Jess pushed himself to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade, and when the year's first school-yard race was run, he was going to win.But his victory was stolen by a newcomer, by a girl, one who didn't even know enough to stay on the girls' side of the playground. Then, unexpectedly, Jess finds himself sticking up for Leslie, for the girl who breaks rules and wins races. The friendship between the two grows as Jess guides the city girl through the pitfalls of life in their small, rural town, and Leslie draws him into the world of imaginations world of magic and ceremony called Terabithia. Here, Leslie and Jess rule supreme among the oaks and evergreens, safe from the bullies and ridicule of the mundane world. Safe until an unforeseen tragedy forces Jess to reign in Terabithia alone, and both worlds are forever changed.

In this poignant, beautifully rendered novel, Katherine Paterson weaves a powerful story of friendship and courage.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel Like A Kid Again.......2007-09-29

Katherine Paterson, with vividly beautiful prose, tells a story about the friendship between a young boy and a young girl, and how that friendship transforms the life of that boy from something dull and normal to something as spectacular as a imaginary fantasy land. The book itself is short and an easy read, but what the book really says to the reader is quite a bit bigger than its page count. Much like growing up, this book is both sweet and painful, and Paterson truly has a great handle on what its like to be a ten year old, fifth grade boy. So for all those readers who aren't afraid of a book that will make them cry (for both sad and warmer reasons) than I recommend this book. It doesn't matter if you're a child or an adult, "Bridge to Terabithia" is universal.

10/10 Classic.

3 out of 5 stars Bridge to Terabithia CD.......2007-09-27

Love the CD. It is done very well. You may need to be aware however that there are curse words in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Read this one with your child.......2007-08-22

There are some pretty heavy subject matters within this beautiful work of fiction. Yet, they are subjects that need to be dealt with, and what better conversation starter than a response to something you've read together? This is the story of Jess and Leslie, two outcasts of their 5th grade class (although I found both to be interesting). They become neighbors and fast friends, and make up an imaginary kingdom deep in the forest, called Terabithia. There, they have the confidence and control which eludes them in the real world. But an amazing thing happens in that they begin to see the world in a different, more favorable light. They find that people are not who they seem, and this makes them better and more compassionate individuals. The first time I read this, I was absolutely stunned by the tragedy that takes place. Even still, after several times rereading it, it tears at my emotions. I commend Katherine Paterson for bravely venturing into such sensitive matters, ones that will make children better capable of dealing head-on with their own emotions.

2 out of 5 stars What was this book about?.......2007-08-10

I did not understand why this book was written. What was it all about? The only point it seemed to make was Leslie's death at the end of the book. Overall I thought that it was exteremly uneventful. Terabithia seemed to have a small role to play in the book. 'Much ado about nothing' fits this novel.
I cannot, however, ginve this book only one star. Giving it one star would be hating this book. I did not hate it I just thought that it never did get to the point. If it was a memior I would have liked it. As a memior I would have thought it was a good book because I would have expected this. (I wouldn't have picked it up though. Memior isn't quite my style.) I liked the characters and was sad when that girl died. I think that that is why I haven't given it one star.
Not a ringing endorsement, but if memior is what you like I'd give it a shot.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful tale of friendship and loss.......2007-08-09

This book digs deep into the lives of two children just trying to make it in a world where everyone sees them as outcasts. The slow start to friendship is quite clear and gripping as we see Jesse struggle with his ability to allow a girl, someone that beats him at something he is supposed to be the best at, enter his life and transform his world.

This is a great book about a friendship that goes slowly, and ends too quickly. Wonderful fantasy lies within which will surely make your children want to create their own Terabithia.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can we learn from history?.......2007-07-29

A phenomenal masterpiece; Michener takes the reader to multiple continents through many centuries following people and animals in the history of the Chesapeake region. Some fine reviews above describe many of the topics in the book, but the chapters on slavery were most moving and eye-opening. Michener decribes the horror of the Africans being betrayed and captured in their villages, the brutal transportation to the west coast of Africa and finally to the Americas. Especially disturbing are the Biblical quotes (cited in the book) that protestant ministers and Catholic bishops used in the pulpit to "justify" slavery. There were a favorite dozen or so passages, referring to the treatment of slaves in the old testament that these men of the cloth grabbed to "prove" that God sanctioned slavery. But then that was some two centuries ago. Certainly the Bible wouldn't be perverted to preach hatred against a minority today.

5 out of 5 stars A first time read of a Michener Novel.......2007-05-13

This is the first book I read by Michener; I couldn't put it down, and I didn't--read the whole book cover to cover straight through. This is the book that instilled my interest in James Michener's Books.

5 out of 5 stars My First Michener.......2007-03-12

I've always been put off by the length of Michener's novels, but when a near relative so enthusiastically recommended this book, I decided to give it a try. Well! I have to say that I thoroughly, completely enjoyed every page. Michener's style is so simple, so clean, almost innocent in his delivery, and yet his characters are vivid and believable. Michener touches many deep interests: a love for American history, a quest for theological and ethical truth, ecological preservation, and the poignancy of many great lives and places vanished away in time. Near the end of the saga, as Michener brought me to stand in the midst of a run-down trailer park, remembering the beautiful marsh filled with wildlife that once flourished there, I was surprised at the sadness and regret I felt. Powerful! I'll be reading more of him.

4 out of 5 stars Makes you proud to be a Marylander.......2007-02-28

Very good book. Some parts were a little dry but it still can easily be read from cover to cover. Sail the Chesapeake with pirates, learn about Coastal Indians and watch a family build an Empire. A fun read from a master of adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Michener epic!.......2006-11-24

I wasn't sure where Chesapeake Bay was when I started this book. I knew it was somewhere on the east coast but didn't realize it was so geographically big. I also didn't realize so many of the big cities that I've heard of is located on or near the Chesapeake Bay. So for me this made the book quite interesting. Once again with Micheners characteristic trademark, he starts the earliest Indians. It was interesting to read that while some Indians were violent some were passive. This makes sense; it would be really hard to generalize about such a big population. Some may find the beginning of Micheners epics slow; certainly this book is no exception. But what I really like is how the last third of the book will some how reference an event or character from the previous part. The pirate aspect of the Chesapeake is interesting; but what captivates is the civil war and the statues of African Americans. We tend to forget at one time that even good people had misconceptions. Much like the Afrikaners in Micheners "The Covenant," I liked these hard working white people; I just didn't like their attitude or treatments of Blacks. The introduction of the Quakers was a bonus for me , as I am unfamiliar with there practices and beliefs. It was also an ironic twist that Michener included a Watergate plot near the end this really brought it into the modern times. So from the earliest Indians to Watergate this book should not fail to interest every reader.

Since I began boating, I've purchased each edition of the ADC chartbook for the Chesapeake Bay. Its size is convenient versus full-size NOAA charts, it covers the whole bay with insets for major ports, the planning map is a more than decent road map, and its other features are well thought-out. The Maptech Chesapeake chartbook is even more thorough and gives the same scale as the NOAA charts (1:80,000 rather than 1:40,000 for ADC) and will be more useful for some sailors, but it is twice the size and more than twice the cost. I use both: the ADC for general voyaging and the Maptech for areas which are critical (shallow water, narrow channels, submerged hazards).

2 out of 5 stars No legend on each chart.......2006-12-25

My feelings are the same as the other writers, but I will add one thing that bugs me the most. There is no distance scale on the charts. In order to see the distance measurement you must turn to the early pages of the book and find it on the one page that has it. I like having the distance scale on each chart. (Granted all charts except insets are the same scale, but when I am making a quick assessment of distance I want to see a scale not work from memory).

I now buy the cruising chart collections from a different company which come in two parts, one for Maryland, one for Virginia. Not waterproof but come with a plastic cover. (In 30+ yrs of sailing I find waterproof charts unnecessary anyway.)

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but could be much better........2006-11-18

Good for general planning, but you need real charts. The criticism about it being too small is true. But the biggest problem I have with the book is that a small section of the chart is missing at the center of each chart. Where you have to turn a page to get to the next chart, there is an overlap as there should be. But down the center, where the fold would be if it was not spiral bound, you are missing a small slice of chart. What are the odds that there is something really significant in that 1/4" inch or so? It doesn't really matter, it's a pretty big mistake by the publishers that should have been caught in my opinion.

Sibling trilogies are fast becoming Nora Roberts's forte. Sea Swept tells the tale of three brothers--all former juvenile delinquents adopted by Raymond Quinn and his wife, Stella. Cameron, Ethan, and Philip are as different as can be, but they are bound by their love and respect for their adoptive father, who has recently passed away. On his deathbed he asks his sons to look after their most recent brother, 10-year-old Seth, who--if the rumors are to believed--just may be Ray's biological son. Of course, the brothers don't know anything about caring for the young boy, and if social worker Anna Spinelli has anything to say about it, they won't. However, the sparks that fly over the fate of Seth are nothing compared to the romantic sparks that fly between Anna and Cameron. Nora Roberts once again proves why she is the premiere author of 1990s contemporary romance. Her stories have universal appeal, and Sea Swept is no exception.

A very good book, however it is best if you are familiar with making string figures as this is a book for the advanced string enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book, Lousy Audio.......2006-07-21

I loved this book when it first came out, so when I was looking for an audiobook for a long trip, I got this one. Unfortunately I found the narrator spoke so slowly and in such a monotone that he almost put me to sleep. Rather than attempting different voices for the characters, he simply raised and lowered his voice. I found some of his "characterizations" so affected sounding, that I had to put the book away. As he also narrates the next book in the Quinn saga, I guess I won't be listening to this series in the future. I would give the book 5 stars, but took away 2 for the lousy audio version

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Very interesting and funny! one of my all time favourites!.......2006-05-30

I have read Nora roberts before but not many and those earlier that i have read hasn't impressed me much because of that i read her books rarely, only when i am recommended any book like this one.i am so glad i picked this one because this was great!
The best part about this book was how these four guys handle living together which was not very well but very funny indeed! Their fights especially Cam's and Philip's were hilarious. I liked Philips very much, can't wait to read 'inner Harbour' now that contains his story but i guess i would go by the series and read 'rising tides' first.
How these two men handle a ten year old boy was very touching. You just can not treat a ten year old as a kid and these men never did. They somehow knew how being treated like a kid at Seth's age felt. they treated him as their equal and when he needed to be reminded of his age they did tell him,'You are only ten, get real!'.
I could feel Seth's insecurites and doubts and felt like crying myself when he cried overwhelmed by emotions when he saw these three men standing up for him. this was a emotional tale but it never got mushy. Even the romance never got too sweet which was a good thing because i know how you get bored always reading those mushy scenes in romance novels.
Anna was great! She was gorgeous and straight forward and never tried to hide her attraction toward Cam, never played games and never acted shy, in short she was every guys dream woman.
This is first trilogy i have read from Nora roberts and i am impressed and i will be going for more soon.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible.......2007-01-04

Not to be trite, but this book is an absolute must for anyone who seriously cruises Chesapeake Bay including its approaches. Superb detail and illustrations compliment a clear, carefully worded text. I have and use two other cruising guides for additional information but always start and end with this book.

5 out of 5 stars The very best guide for the gunkholer.......2006-09-25

I have two copies of the 2001 edition: one aboard my sailboat in Annapolis and the second in my office. Most of my use of the book has been in the middle Chesapeake. In crawling up and down the Magothy, Severn, South, West, Rhode, Chester, Wye, and Tred Avon Rivers this book has provided helpful insight into what I would find. This book and the Maptech chart book are all you need to find your way to and through the backwaters of the Chesapeake.

2 out of 5 stars Cruisers.......2006-03-17

We have a power boat but found this book to be very informative & helpful. We are planning our trip, have not been to the Chesapeake in about 25 years, and have found this book the best yet in our preparations. We like to anchor out and this book is informative not specifically focusing jumping from marina to marina like many guides do.

4 out of 5 stars Wanna-be gunkholer happy with this book:-).......2002-04-24

In addition to telling you where facilities, anchorages, and other interesting local points of interest are, he supplies invaluable lessons only learned in the school of hard knocks. Valuable mariner lessons were included on weather prediction, inlet navigation, and other techniques tailored to use in the Chesapeake bay. The book was very well done, and I hope to set off on a cruise in the very near future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2001-02-19

If you cruise the Chesapeake, you must have this book. I have read non better.

3 out of 5 stars A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29

Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!

3 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03

Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18

Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.

Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.

5 out of 5 stars It Takes You There...........2004-11-16

Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.

Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.

I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.
