Book Description

Twelve miles above the Pacific Ocean, a missile strikes a jumbo passenger jet. The flight crew is crippled or dead. Now, defying both nature and man, three survivors must achieve the impossible. Land the plane. From master storyteller Nelson DeMille and master pilot Thomas Block comes Maydaythe classic bestseller that packs a supersonic shock at every turn of the page....the most terrifyingly realistic air disaster thriller ever. Like a growing tidal wave, the escaping air was gathering momentum. A teenaged girl in aisle 18, seat D, near the port-side aisle, her seat dislocated by the original impact, suddenly found herself gripping her seat track on the floor, her overturned seat still strapped to her body. The seatbelt failed and the seat shot down the aisle. She lost her grip and was dragged after it. Her eyes were filled with horror as she dug her nails into the carpet, as the racing air pulled her toward the yawning hole that led outside. Her cries were unheard by even those passengers who sat barely inches away from her struggle. The noise of the escaping air was so loud that it was no longer decipherable as sound, but seemed instead a solid thing pounding at the people in their seats......

5 out of 5 stars Fast paced page turner!.......2007-07-16

After a summer of reading what are classified as "thrillers," this book was a highlight. Not many books get my nervous system involved, but this one did! While I was reading it, there were some times where my heart actually beat a little faster from the anticipation and anxiety. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to read an "edge of the seat," suspenseful fictional work.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-08

I received this book when it first came out in 1998 and have loved it ever since. It's definitely a book that can be read more than once. If you're into the aviation disaster novels, similiar to John Nance's mid-career books (The Last Hostage, Medussa's Child), you'll probably like this one too.

2 out of 5 stars Overly technical.......2007-04-04

First of all let me tell you that this book has too many words and it has overly explanations that'll make a dull read. In the other hand it has too many technical explanations that if you're a pilot or something like that you'll understand the technicalities. But if you are a layman in the airspace subject like me, this book is a waste of time.
If you want to read an airplane story without technicalities read Airframe by Michael Crichton this is an enjoyable one.
One more thing, how is possible that a Navy Admiral takes orders from his minion?

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-09

I've only recently discovered Demille and i can't quit reading. Why is this book not a major motion picture yet?

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2006-08-17

DeMille is such a great storyteller and "Mayday" is one of my favorites. Get ready for a thrill ride. This book is hard to put down. A bit unbelievable, at points, but it sure kept me turning the pages and asking for more. If anyone in your family is a pilot - I'm sure they would enjoy this thrill of a read. If you haven't read DeMille's "Spencerville" yet, you might want to give it a go, too!

Book Description

In June of 1994 a dangerous "bomb" storm caught dozens of cruising sailors by surprise as they voyaged north from New Zealand. This is the true story of how nine yachts struggled to survive the hurricane-like conditions. Boats were battered by fierce winds and capsized by seas towering well over 50 feet high. Equipment was ripped loose, and water penetrated every weak point. Masts collapsed, rudders broke, and sailors lost steering control when they needed it most. The crews coped as best they could with injury, fear, exhaustion, and illness. Their electronic calls for help were picked up by satellites and radio operators, who initiated a massive air and sea search. This is the story of heroic rescues, human endurance, and tragic loss.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping Tale!.......2006-06-09

I've read numerous sailing adventure books, but this one is a true page turner! You learn about all of the differnt sailors on board each boat that gets swallowed up in a Force 12 storm. You begin to bond with these people and feel their anxiety and fears right along with them. One thing that stands apart in this book, verses others that I've read: is the author takes time to pay tribute to the heroics of the rescuers who are sent out to sea, to risk their own lives to save the lives of others. If you want fast paced, gripping suspense and adventure; then you'll certainly want to read this book!

5 out of 5 stars I was there........2002-10-16

As capitan of the Destiny and having experienced this storm first hand, I can say that Tony's work is by far the most accurate of all the articals I have read. This is the book I recogmend when asked for my story. For those of you planning an ocean crossing, I would suggest that there are lessions learned during this storm that will prove of great value to you should you ever find yourselve in "the wrong place at the wrong time". My views of survival in extreem heavy weather were forever changed. It's a good read.

5 out of 5 stars More compelling than A Perfect Storm.......2002-07-26

A real page-turner. I couldn't put it down. The suspense was spellbinding. Unlike A Perfect Storm, you don't know the outcome. Well written and true according to a friend who married a pilot who knew the rescuers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-02-07

This book is a definite "Must Read". A little difficult to follow at first, as it covers the entire search and rescue operations involving several boats and their crew. I felt as if I was right there in it with them, and you can't put the book down until you know how it comes out in the end. This book is well written, with plenty of suspense and drama to keep your interest well into the wee morning hours. It was so good, I'm reading it again.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2000-11-14

This book kept me on the edge of my seat for hours! I ended up reading it in one sitting! Any sailor dreaming of a blue water cruise should read this book. Non-sailors will enjoy this book also. Don't get bogged down by some of the sailing terms... this book is about the life and death struggle these people faced out in the Pacific and how they managed to survive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mayday!: Asking for Help.......2007-08-21

I initially started reading this book thinking there was nothing I could learn about asking for help. Boy was I wrong! I found the information engaging, perceptive and thought provoking. Ms. Klaver writes in a very approachable style, almost as if you are having a conversation with her. And the examples she gives really illustrate her point in a way that everyone can recognize and to which they can relate. I have even purchased this book for family and friends who I know will benefit from her insight. She really made me reassess my attitude and method in asking for help. I would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Mayday!: Asking for Help in Times of Need, by M. Nora Klaver.......2007-07-30

I found Nora Klaver's stories and advice on asking for help so inspiring, I'm getting copies for a couple of friends and family members who would also benefit from her wisdom and guidance.

I also find her accompanying workbook a great help in identifying where and how I can open up and connect with others by including them in ways of helping me. Doing this seemed impossible at first, but Ms. Klaver brought out the courage and desire to reach out in asking for and appreciating help, which is making a significant difference for me, and for those I've been asking.

5 out of 5 stars Really insightful executive coach - great review from NY Times.......2007-07-11

I decided to read this book based on a great review I read in the NY Times and her reputation in Chicago as a top executive coach. The premise of the book is that learning to ask for help is not just good for altruistic reasons; it makes business sense. She has some good examples of how asking for help can work to your advantage in getting ahead at work and getting along with your coworkers. She offers some great tips on how to ask for help too. I know people who have worked with this executive coach and rave about her. After working with her and the techniques she shares in this book, they were promoted very quickly. I'm confident the skills I learned through this book will do the same for me. A+++

My husband is a "Clive Cussler" fan, so I do my best to acquire as many of Clive's books for him, as possible.

I was very disappointed to learn that MAYDAY was the original title published in England and was the same story as Mediterranean Caper.

It's sad when two different titles of the same book, leaves the shopper to believe that they are two different stories.

We still love Clive, but don't care for the practice of publishing under a second title.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and entertaining for babies to adults.......2007-07-02

I bought this book years ago because it was on clearance and I was interested in illustrating for children's books. The illustrations are just beautiful. Recently, I had my first child and we have begun reading to him on a regular basis. He is 6 months old and he is captivated by the colors and the cute bug characters. The stories are short enough to keep his attention span. We move some of the pages so it looks like the bugs are moving (flying, digging, climbing, etc.) and he laughs in utter delight. Some pages have leaves protruding out of the page and he actually tries to bite into them! This book has provided the whole family hours of entertainment. We plan on getting more of the books in this series.

    5 out of 5 stars Adorable Book!.......2003-03-18

My one-year-old just adores this book! It borders on obsession. He goes to it every time in his bookcase and my husband and I have to read it over and over to him. We enjoy it too, fortunately! The pop-ups are fantastic and the illustrations are intriguing. The story is told in a sweet little rhyme.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as exciting of a plot as the others, but still great.......2003-02-06

It's Frank Peretti's brilliant novel writing skills...condensed! It's a super-cool family of archeologists--minus a mother--who investigate phenomena in the spirit of Indiana Jones, only with a Christian perspective. A nice alternative to the gore and junk in the Indiana Jones movies.

Flying Blind isn't as exciting or as spectacular of a plot as some of the others, but still will keep you on the edge of your seat. Jay Cooper has been struck blind on board his uncle's plane due to airplane turbulence. Now, with the help of ground crew, family, friends, and relatives he must attempt to keep his unconscious uncle alive and land safely...all while he is Flying Blind.

This book appears to be the last of the Cooper kids adventure series, sadly. It's not as grand as some of the other novels, like I said, but it's still worth reading.

For the parents: A pretty tame book, compared to the others. Jay gets whacked on the head and bleeds a little. That's it.

      4 out of 5 stars wow.......2002-07-30

This one keeps you on the edge of your seat. Jay Cooper and his uncle were having a fun flight on his uncle's plane, when a larger plane knocked them terribly. Jay becomes blind, and his uncle is knocked unconscious. Jay must now atempt to land the plane without eyesight. He gets help, though, over the radio, from a friend, an airport trafic controler, and finally his father. His family down on the ground tries to think of a successful way for him to land the plane. But it may cost his uncle his life. Can Jay land the plane successfully without injuring himself or his uncle? This book grabs your attention, and keeps it!

      FLYING BLIND

I really enjoyed reading this book because it was very suspenseful. It was full of excitement, it made you not want to stop reading the book or even put it down. It was like being inside a movie acting it out as you read on. I believe everyone should have the Frank Peretti collection in their home. If it is your first time reading a book you should start on this book. If you like a book full of action and danger this is the book you should be reading. It takes place on a little two-passenger plane that belongs to jay's uncle. They both were having fun until a huge passenger plane had blown its engine. The force of the turbulence under the plane forced jay's plane out of control and knocking them both unconscious.

5 out of 5 stars The Lord is faithful in all circumstances.......2000-03-01

My son and myself have read all eight of the series now and have been very touched as well as entertained by the series. "Flying Blind" is a wonderful story of the Cooper family's ability to walk by faith and not by sight. As they are tested by some very trying circumstances God continues to reveal himself as a loving Father faithfully delivering his children thru difficult times. We have been blessed by reading about this family's very Good Friend who watches over and saves His people. Read the entire series and come to know this Good Friend better!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Deal More than Any of us Ever Knew.......2003-04-15

Michael Beschloss, long known as a fantastic presidential historian, captured a great deal of detail about the U-2 program and the subsequent crisis that erupted when Francis Gary Powers was shot down in this book.

The author begins with the development of the U-2 program and its necessity, and then the covert efforts by the CIA to evaluate what capabilities really did exist in the USSR for nuclear war. The level of involvement on the part of President Eisenhower did suprise me a little, especially the way in which the flights before the shootdown were somewhat routine, with Soviet complaints being easily dismissed. It is the shootdown, and the results both immediate and long-term, that dominate the majority of the book.

The timing could nothave been worse- it was the last scheduled flight before a summit between the two superpowers, and Khruschev was at the Moscow U.S. Embassy for an Independence Day celebration as the shootdown unfolded. The repercussions were potentially enormous, as the U.S. lost prestige, leverage, and the ability to continue to operate the program once it came to light.

Beschloss writes very well, and this early effort of his is certainly worth the time it will take to find it and read it.

Mayday: Eisenhower, Khrushchev and the U-2 Affair (1986)(Michael R. Beschloss 1955-)

The major conclusion I came to was that it is probable both Eisenhower and Khrushchev wanted a period of at least limited détente. Because of their own miscalculations about each other's behavior, that moment was lost. -Michael Beschloss

In the Spring of 1960, as President Eisenhower neared the end of his successful but uneventful presidency, he devoutly wished to cap off his career with a successful summit with the Soviet Union. Having met with Khrushchev the previous year and established the "Spirit of Camp David", he envisioned forging a sort of détente and entering into some kind of arms treaty, perhaps a test ban, at a May meeting with the Soviet Premier in Paris. But on May 1, 1960--celebrated as May Day in Europe and a holiday of great import in the Soviet Union--American pilot Francis Gary Powers and his U-2 spy plane were shot down over Russian territory. The plane, on it's way from Peshawar, Pakistan to Bodo, Norway, would have been flying at an altitude of about 70,000 feet. Russian SAMs had been steadily improving their range, and the danger of a shootdown was well understood at the highest levels of American government, in fact the President had ordered that he be given the right of final approval for each flight, but in that pre satellite era the spy planes were providing nearly all U.S. intelligence on the state of Russia's military, so Ike concluded that were worth the very high risk. Moreover, the flights were done under CIA command, not the military, pilots had orders to commit suicide if shot down and neither they nor identifiable portions of the planes were expected to survive anyway, so the U.S. expected to maintain deniability. The Eisenhower Administration did in fact initially deny that the U-2 was a spy plane, claiming it was a weather flight that blew off course. In the event, Powers survived and Khrushchev, struggling to hold off "hard-liners" at home, chose to inflate the incident into a major provocation and, although the two sides went ahead with the Paris summit, it quickly degenerated into a diplomatic mess and the opportunity for a reduction in Cold War tensions was lost for a generation.

Michael Beschloss, who is a national treasure as regards study of the presidency, has done a masterful job of reconstructing the events surrounding the U-2 Affair. He really brings the period and it's tensions to life, particularly the internal functioning of the Eisenhower administration. To me, the most significant aspect of the book is Beschloss's argument that it was thanks to the spying of the U-2 that Eisenhower understood how weak the Soviets actually were and that Ike and Khrushchev basically had an implicit understanding that if the Soviet did not make a real effort to upgrade their sorry military capacity, the U.S. would act as if the Soviets posed a threat. This allowed Ike to reign in the Military-Industrial Complex and balance the Federal budget, while at the same time permitting Khrushchev to swagger around the world stage as if the Soviets were our military equals. True or not, this portrait comports with the image which has emerged in recent years of Eisenhower as a much more deft and nuanced leader than was previously understood to be the case.

Since this book was written before the fall of the Soviet Union, it is likely that someone taking a fresh look at the affair, particularly someone with access to Soviet archives, will have much detail to add to the Russian side of the story. But it is hard to imagine someone producing any more readable an account of the whole incident. If I have one reservation with the book, it is that Beschloss does not consider the broader question of whether detente was a good idea in and of itself. Few would any longer argue that the final demise of the Evil Empire came only after they had stretched themselves to the limit. A fuller discussion of what detente might have meant for the internal situation in Russia would have been helpful. I'd be interested to know whether Beschloss thinks it would have weakened Communist control, which I doubt, or enabled them to devote more resources to productive domestic industries and thereby strenthened the regime's long term prospects.

At any rate, it's an excellent book and a really fascinating look at the Eisenhower presidency. This one is most recommended. Unfortunately, it's also out of print, so by all means take advantage of the out of print service above or try your your library, but it's worth tracking down.
