Book Description
Hope has it all: brains, beauty, and acceptance at Starwood, a prestigious arts prep school. A mere sophomore, she has won the lead in Romeo and Juliet, beating out seniors for the role—seniors who have been in movies and on Broadway! And with handsome Logan as her Romeo onstage and off, her life couldn't be more perfect.
So why would this talented teen throw everything away? Why would she fake her own abduction? Hope wants to explain what really happened, and gradually the truth comes out: Maybe her life wasn't that perfect after all.
In her first novel for young adults, national bestselling author Jacquelyn Mitchard takes us into a world where appearance is everything, and nothing is exactly as it seems.

Not as good as some of these reviews.......2007-09-04
This book starts to get good about halfway through. To be honest, if I had not read all the glowing reviews and bought the hardback book, I probably would not have finished it.
fun read, but...........2007-08-23
Hope or Bernadette or the next Gwennyth or whoever she is.....is definately a Jon Benet only almost all grown up. while the book is kind of forgettable and Hope isn't particularly likeable, the story raises many important issues in today's society. what happens when nutty stage mom's push their kids beyond reason? celebrity and fame obsessed teens turn into...what? and what happens in the 'after' when a teen who has delusions of grandure turns herself into a world spectacle?
teens will enjoy this book much more than i did, but hopefully they will ask themselves the same questions as a result.
Beyond Good.......2007-07-05
Expecting this to be a book I would want my teenage grandchild to read, I went into it thinking it would be fun, light and somewhat less than captivating. I was dead wrong. Took me about two days with a very busy schedule to finish because I was so committed to finding out about the true Hope Shay (Bernadette). Whole range of opinions from disgust to sympathy. Great good!!
A path of deceit, confusion and, ultimately, the bitter truth........2007-06-01
To Hope Shay (real name: Bernadette Romano, which just won't cut it in Hollywood), Romeo and Juliet is more than just a school production. It's life. Only a sophomore, Hope has scored the part of Juliet, a role that makes her the envy of all the upperclassmen. And why shouldn't she be envied? She has a special talent for acting, a way to make characters come to life. Her talent is what got her into the famed Starwood Academy, a prep school for fine arts students, and it's what makes a film actor named Logan Rose fall in love with her.
Hope's mother calls it The Gift. The Gift is what gets Hope the lead in a production of Annie and some spots in TV commercials. It makes Hope different from other kids --- more mature, more ambitious --- but a side effect of this difference is that she has no friends. At Starwood, she believes, people will be more like her. Instead of thinking she's stuck-up for having an agent, they'll admire her and talk acting with her. Or so she hopes.
What a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive.
Life imitates art as Hope tells a story of falling in love with her (onstage and real-life) Romeo, Logan. They have to keep their romance a secret for many reasons, so Hope becomes consumed with their clandestine meetings. Together, they make what Hope calls The Plan. They'll move to L.A. or New York, waiting tables and auditioning for the roles that will make them stars, and then get married. The Plan, however, starts to crumble when Logan asks the question that engenders The Idea: "What would you say your parents think you're worth?"
The Idea is for Logan and Hope to fake Hope's kidnapping and get about $20,000 in ransom money from Hope's parents, enough for them to start on The Plan. Logan will "find" Hope and be considered a hero. But when Hope goes through with The Plan, staging her own kidnapping without Logan, we begin to see that all is not right in Hope's mind. Is she really in love with Logan, or is it more an unrequited obsession? Where do her lies begin and end?
Hope's journal is a passionate, frightening look at the destructive power of mental illness. In her story, she is both the heroine and the victim, while everyone else is the villain. Since we readers only see Hope's side of the story, we are led to believe that Hope is the stage star with the perfect boyfriend --- the person she not only wants to be, but would like everyone else to believe she already is. As in Chris Lynch's INEXCUSABLE and Gail Giles's DEAD GIRLS DON'T WRITE LETTERS, we have no choice but to follow an unreliable narrator down a path of deceit, confusion and, ultimately, the bitter truth.

Now You See Her.......2007-04-21
Now You See Her, written by Jacquelyn Mitchard, is the tragic story of Hope Shay. Hope is an incredibly commited actor, and always was. The older she became the more she pushed herself. She lived life upon the stage, and off the stage she didn't have one. Hope trained her to be the best, and she was. She was talented, and she and her mother knew it. Once off at new school for teens like herself- the kind that are destined for fame; Hope is pushed too far, too hard, too long. And when a teen is pushed farther than they can go.... it can end painfully. Mitchard does a wonderful job of writing as a fifteen year old.

Linda Howard's new romantic thriller, her hardcover debut, brings psychic phenomena, hot sex, and deadly danger into the life of an appealing young artist. Paris Sweeney, who calls herself Sweeney, is living a pared-down existence devoted to painting when she begins to see ghosts. Worse, she starts painting disturbing images while sleepwalking, then wakes with an unnatural, bone-deep chill that can only be dispelled by direct body contact with the unexpected new man in her life--Richard Worth, the soon-to-be ex-husband of the gallery owner who sells Sweeney's work. Then Sweeney realizes she's painting the picture of a murder victim, just before the actual crime takes place. Can she stop the killing before it happens? And if not, is she destined to become either the prime suspect or the murderer's next victim? Howard keeps the suspense streamlined and straightforward, focusing equally on the relationship between the sympathetic Sweeney, whose dreadful growing-up years forced her to become more independent than is good for her, and Richard, whose drive to leave his old life behind matches his determination to make Sweeney part of his future. A sensual, page-turning diversion that's sure to win the author new fans.

Now You See Her.......2007-07-12
Really enjoyed this book. Characters are interesting and the heroine is very strong and likeable. This is my second time purchasing this novel. My first novel was borrowed so many times I had to get another one. Ms. Howard never fails to deliver.
So far Ms Howard's best work.......2007-03-07
I'm surprised with the negative reviews. I couldn't put this book down and read this within 2 days (as I started this on a Monday evening and other responsibliites, such work, sleep, kids, etc.). While reading, I kept thinking about the movie, 'The Sixth Sense' which is not at all related except for the paranormal aspect of the novel. I loved the movie and loved this book. I did figure out who was the murder when it happen which was near the end of the novel but this isn't a 'Who Donit' book. I enjoy the relationship between the heros and all the secondary characters. This is now my favorite by Ms. Howard. So far, I've read 'Open Season', 'McKenzie Mission', 'After the Night' and they have all been excellent. I love Ms. Howard's Alpha guys!!!
Started Out Promising.......2006-08-10
I'd never read anything by this author before. The book started out promising but fell flat towards the middle and definitely at the end. I figured out "who dunnit" right away. The paranormal beginning was great but the author didn't do enough with it. Also, the relationship between the main characters was flimsy and not well developed.
Unbelievable plot, but Linda Howard makes it work.......2006-06-25
Paris Sweeney is a talented landscape painter in New York. While most people would call her a loner, Sweeney, as she prefers to be called, is content to be on her own focusing on producing beautiful paintings. With her eye for detail, her works are one of the most highly sought in an exclusive gallery owned by Candra Worth. But one day, Sweeney discovers another hidden talent she possesses: she can make the traffic lights turn green, she can guess the questions in a game show before they're asked, and she can actually see and speak with ghosts. While the first two might all be just coincidence, there is no denying her ability to see the dead. Then when she wakes up one day to find a graphic and morbid painting showing someone's murder, she develops a bone-deep chill verging on hypothermia that could very well kill her. And when another episode of "sleep-painting" occurs, this time depicting a murder yet to happen, she turns to Candra's estranged husband.
Richard Worth is a practical man. However, as Sweeney's illness gets worse, he knows that he cannot ignore her claims, especially when her first painting was an accurate depiction of a street vendor's murder. Now with the second painting unfinished, they need to find out who the victim is. But when the murder occurs, Sweeney becomes the primary suspect and eventually the target of the murderer.
NOW YOU SEE HER is a romantic suspense that mixes psychic phenomena, hot sensuality and intriguing plot. While the mystery is not as gripping as DREAM MAN, in which I thought the author has done such a fantastic job profiling the murderer, it has enough suspense to keep you turning the page, and the characters are well-developed. I enjoyed the banter between Richard and Sweeney. Her outspokenness is funny and I liked the way she manages to stun Richard with this characteristic.
I enjoyed this novel despite the rather rushed ending and remain a big fan of the author.
Very mediocre .......2006-04-17
Now You See Her was, simply, a fair-to-middling book. I got the same feelings I did when I read Killing Time by this author: she developed her characters imaginatively, began to write about a juicy plot, and then...my guess is Howard's deadline for completing this novel must have drawn near. Once the murder victim was dead I got the feeling it was a rush job, with lots of bland filler and predictability. The book kept rolling downward on this slope (which did at least contain a few good sex scenes)and ended with a brief explanatory epilogue to quickly fill a gigantic plot hole.
So much untapped potential here. I recommend several books by this author, but this won't be one of them.

Book Description
A suddenly psychic 40-something divorcee uses her newly acquired ability in this thrilling new series by the author of the popular Kate Banning mystery series. Regina Cutter is the mother of two grown children and the victim of her husband's midlife crisis. Out of a marriage, an income, and a place to live, she has relocated to Boston's Back Bay where her psychic aunt bequeathed her a townhouse#151;and some paranormal ability. Adjusting to her new middle-class life and taking on a new job as a police psychic, Reggie is called upon to help prove the false imprisonment of a drug felon and end the possible haunting of a recently renovated townhouse. It's quite a long way from bemoaning a broken marriage, and newly minted psychic Regina Cutter is just getting started.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty lame. .......2006-09-25
Rarely has a mystery grabbed me so completely from the first few paragraphs. I was so excited to discover this series about Regina Cutter, a newly divorced forty-something mom of two who tries to use her psychic ability to help the Boston Metropolitan Police.
However, the story quickly degenerated from that early high. My complaints, in no particular order:
-The title has absolutely nothing to do with the book. Hate that.
-Too many coincidences -- the plot was wrapped up a bit too neatly with all the strange occurrences tying together.
-At the same time, a lot of loose ends were left... what about Doc? What did he want to do with Regina?
-Random quoting of Bible verses and Dante's Inferno that were distracting and laughable, rather than adding to the story.
-Stark's deus ex machina appearances to save Regina just in the nick of time
-What's this with the psychic who is basically useless? She never seems to pick up anything worth mentioning, yet so much is made of her psychic ability.
What a disappointment. Tishy is a great writer and surely could have fixed many of the issues that made this book so lame. I may try another Regina Cutter mystery in the future, but only if I get a psychic message to do so.
Mixed review.......2006-05-25
I enjoyed the main character and her psychic ability. However, the book's pace was a little slow for me. A little too much of her going to talk to someone and chit-chatting about irrelevant stuff and then finding one tiny piece of information. It was as if all you had to do was read the last page of every chapter. But it was well-written.
A series to watch (psychically or otherwise).......2006-05-22
It's always fun to discover a new series and this one's clearly on my watch list!
Engaging characters, plot that's not too obvious, and a strong sense of place.
Fire and Ice.......2005-10-13
Robert Frost's poem "Fire and Ice" aptly describes Regina Cutter's psychic feelings when she consults on a case for the Boston police. A thirteen year old case is brought to Reggie's attention, and she feels compelled to see if the man imprisoned for murder is actually guilty. Whenever she's close to the murder site, and also to the site of a fire, Reggie's feels fire in her thumb and body. When she uses her ability to check out a "haunted" house, she feels cold and sees snow. Despite her status as divorcee living and working alone, she pushes herself into places she doesn't belong and bothers people with clout. Now You See Her is a fascinating look behind Boston society life with a great new character.
not my type.......2005-09-18
Another psychic mystery - Reggie Cutter is starting her life over in the Boston house that she inherited from her aunt - another psychic. Reggie is new to her abilities - but she still tries to assist police detective Frank Devaney the way her aunt had before she died. Reggie gets strange vibes in areas where there was a fire and murder 13 years ago - but she doesn't understand her skills well enough to apply them to the clues she's getting. I wasn't able to finish this story - I didn't enjoy the way the author wove the story together and many of the actions Reggie took were extremely unrealistic. This just wasn't a story for me, but I hope that others enjoy it.

Kiki Shaw, a game show question writer, is about to turn forty. She doesn't mind that, except that she's also disappearing. Parts of her that were always there are vanishing, and no one seems to notice. Perhaps they will all evanesce bit by bit, until they detect where they misplaced themselves and their once-promising lives (.
As she did in her New York Times bestseller, How to Make an American Quilt, Whitney Otto has created a rich gallery of voices and lives that draws us in and pierces our perceptions of who we are or should be.

The Incidentals Got Me Hooked.......2006-05-22
I was first attracted to this book by its cover. I thought it would be about magic. So, it took me awhile to get into it. Then I found that the story of how women in general and this protagonist in particular may seem to disappear in this society as they age caught my attention. I became curious to see how the author resolved this problem. But my favorite parts and what kept me reading at the start of the book and even through to the end, however, were the incidentals, i.e., the job that Kiki has on the "question and answers" game show as a researcher and fact checker; and the main setting of the story. I enjoyed reading the trivia facts that Otto has her character track down and prepare as part of the character's job. In addition, since I am a long-time transplant from the east coast and currently live near Pasadena, CA, I loved the Pasadena locations and the associated history, the other Southern California place references, such as the La Brea Tar Pits and nearby Museum of Art, and the mention of the Smoke House restaurant, where I have taken a meal or two, myself.
A wonderful writer at work here.......2006-01-16
When Whitney Otto publishes a novel, I make sure not only to read the book, but to read it when I am feeling refreshed, awake, alert and when I am likely to be undisturbed. That is how much I love this writer's work. She has a unique and charming voice, and her narratives are always so surprising. Now You See Her is a smart book with a clever conceit, beautifully observed and a pleasure to read.
Growing Old is Not Fun When Ignored........2005-04-14
From the book cover and the title, I mistakenly assumed it was about magic, as the magician has the shadow of a woman levitating; yet, the three different sizes shows that he too is disappearing. It's all illusion, but a strange, unexplained one.
Kiki had confided in one of her friends in San Francisco that the worst thing about growing old (she is forty) was having to do it in America where youth, money, pretty things, and cussess are revered. Most of all youth and beauty, at least where women were concerned, are of major importance. So different from Europe and China where the older woman is appreciated. The American male attitude toward aging women makes them appear to be invisible. It's a fact, even in a backward town like Knoxville, Tennessee.
This is a reprise of the storyline of her first book HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT, only this time the participants are involved in a t.v. game show and not in sewing. She uses the stories of each character. In one of the disjointed vignettes, on traveling across America before her total disappearance to Paris, she is told that people are friendlier, poorer, and "less tolerant" in the Deep South. I think she found the Luray Caverns there in Virginia.
At Arlington National Cemetery, she tours Robert E. Lee's house where she could envision his dilemma of deciding to go with his region (the Confederacy) during the Civil War. His wife comforts him and, though her arms "encircle him, he cannot feel her. So solitary is one in the midst of personal sadness." He was a military man doing his duty, as he saw it, and it's too bad when people from California have no notion whatsoever about our Civil War.
All of her little books have Oriental book jackets, all similar, and she uses the same format of short vignettes to tell varied and many stories. This one was not about magic at all! A later version, A COLLECTION OF BEAUTIES, goes back in time to the late-twenties and early-thirties to the fetish of beauty and youth. No age is perfect. They include related tales, and she seems to be searching for her Japanese roots. Along the way, I sincerely hope she finds some happiness. Sometimes, beauty is on the inside of a person, no matter what age, and let me tell you that older women are still beautiful.
Why Read This Drivel?.......2004-06-22
This was about the most mind numbing foray into an infantile Woman's persuit of purpose. If I ever knew a Person like this character (Kiki), I think she'd be so self absorbed, and bored out of her mind, I would walk, no, RUN from them. What a waste of paper. (I gave it one star because 0 wasn't available).
My first review.......2001-09-26
This book has more potential than is realized but still, it is worth reading. The point that Whitney Otto is trying to get across, (women become invisible in American society unless they fit into a couple of predefined molds; young, wife, mother, or sucessful business woman),is hard to do with out coming off whiny or gloomy. Just read any Oprah Winfrey pick to confirm that statement.
I think this book is worth reading because it is one of the few that does have a unique style of story telling. And if you read a lot, creativity and uniqueness is important.

Now You See Her, Now You Don't.......2002-10-06
This was a pretty good Sabrina book. Sabrina keeps popping into TV shows and books, because of a spell Hilda tries to put on Amanda. This book has some funny parts, but in some places it was a little boring.
A short review by Abby.......2001-02-11
The Sabrina books are naturally good. Now You See Her Now You Dont is a really humorous book. It's all about a youth potion a random popping spell and Sabrina's bratty cousin Amanda.I think Sabrina fan's will really enjoy this fascinating book.
In and Out.......2000-04-02
Sabrina pops in and out of books and tv shows, because Amanda has put a spell on her. It's a great book, and it's real funny!
Don't touch that remote!.......2000-01-01
What's going on? All of a sudden, Sabrina keeps popping out of real life & into a novel or TV show! Then a few seconds later she pops back to the real world again. So far, no one has witnessed her strange disappearances. But how long can she be that lucky?
Sabrina is sure it's just another pop quiz from the Quizmaster. But she can't she can't come up with the right solution, & there's a party at the roller rink tonight. What if she's skating & just disappears into thin air? Won't everyone think that's a teensy bit weird?
Even worse, every time Sabrina pops out, she's gone a little longer. If this keeps up, she could disappear from real life completely!
