I bought this as a gift for a friend who helped a great deal with my wedding, advising me of dress styles, hair styles, fashion from this era, dances, music, food, and everything in between, as well as arranging all the flowers for the wedding! She was a godsend! When I gave her the book, her jaw dropped and she was so excited to get it... she said she had been wanting it forever. As I consider her quite knowledgeable about the subject matter of this book, and as it came highly recommended by her, I would say that it's a great book to have if this is something you are interested in as a serious hobby or more.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to start for Elizabethan Costuming.......2003-04-10

This is one of the best books ever written on the subject of Elizabethan Costuming. It mainly contains all of the details of Queen Elizabeth I wardrobe but it has unique points in the society that surrounded the dresses. This book helps to explain the Gloriana image that became so popular and it helps us to understand all the little details that went into the dress of the period. Detailing costumes using portraits and explaining how the fashion progressed makes this book a must for anyone interested in Renaissance Faires and the nobility. The only drawback is that very very few of the portraits and pictures are in color. I think a total of about 7 are in color the rest is in black and white. The only way to make this book more appealing and usable would be to put all of the portraits and pictures in color, but that would make the book even more expensive. After this must have book the 2nd on the shelf should be a J. Hunniset book (the lady who did all the costuming for Elizabeth R and The Six Wives of Henry the VIII produced by BBC). Next, any Janet Arnold book. Last, would be the Norris book: Tudor Costuming and Fashion (although most of this book is very outdated it is nice to look at). All of these are must haves and will make a well rounded library. Dispite the high price of the book it is worth posessing. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Such An Amazing Resource!.......2002-02-12

For the historical costumer focused on 16th century clothing, this is the "bible" hands down. Big, expensive, and filled with the usual detail that is the hallmark of Janet Arnold, this is one very worthwhile investment for the serious costumer. This book has one tiny drawback, in that it focuses entirely on women's fashion in the 16th century as viewed through the wardrobe accounts of Queen Elizabeth I and some of her contemporaries. Therefore, it has nothing to say on the topic of men's clothing, which is an unfortunately neglected aspect of 16th century research.

Much of Janet Arnold's most important contributions to the costuming community are addressed in this book, making it extremely valuable. She presents each section with satisfying detail, raising very few questions that remain unanswered. The photographs accompanying the text are also invaluable, as many of them are not available in other books or to the general public for viewing. If only there were more color images...

If you can afford the book, you won't regret buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Really great book but....there are a few issues.......2001-08-06

For years I heard how this was _the_ book to buy if you were into Elizabethan costuming and wanted authentic items that could be documented. The book is good for that, and I enjoyed the style that Ms.Arnold wrote it in.

But I have two major gripes with the book-both regarding the quality of graphics and images in it.

First off-in the whole book there are only about 5 pages in color. The rest of it-including hundreds of portraits, examples of extant clothing pieces and pieces of embroidery were all in black and white. I complain about that because, with so many of the portraits quoted as examples it would help if they could be seen clearly. (Many of them are too dark to have reproduced well, and a few are quite horrible.) And the photographs....

If they could reprint this book and possibly include more color plates it would be a much much more valuable resource. As it stands now, it is a good source, but not all that I could have hoped for. Instead I have begun a search for color reproductions of the portraits cited in the book. A long tedious job but one that I think over all will make it a much more solid resource for my needs.

5 out of 5 stars The Best source for the Wardrobe of Elizabeth 1st.......2000-05-13

This book is amazing. Huge, and packed full of information. An essential refernce work if you are seriously considering doing anything with elizabethan fashion. The author has poured years of scholarship into this work and it shows. It's not really a coffee table picture book. Instead it is full of carefully culled facts for the serious student or anybody curious about 'real' English Tudor costume.

5 out of 5 stars As always, the book is SO MUCH better than the Movie.......2007-04-15

What a great find, I remember loving the movie when I was a young girl. This was a wonderful way to tell the story of Jesus, after the crucifiction and through the eyes of the people he had lived with and taught and healed, and a good reminder of what the Christian religion is truly about.

Marcellus and Demetrius were wonderful heros, I adored Diana, hated the evil Roman Emporers and thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself into the life and times of that era. I noticed some other reviewers claimed there were historical inaccuracies in the book which distracted them from enjoying it as much as I did. Not knowing enough about the various rulers of those times I can't comment on that, except that since the book was written in 1945 perhaps the known history was different than what is available now.

The book is quickest in pace at the beginning and the end, with a large slower period in the middle while Marcellus travels through Israel learning about the life of Jesus. However, I enjoyed the slower pace and reminder of the many wonderful things that happened at this time.

All in all a great read and highly recommended, with the caveat that if you are an agnostic or of non-christian faiths you might not appreciate it as well. Also a good choice for a younger teen reader, as you won't find the abundant gratuitous sex that you find in more current novels.

5 out of 5 stars Journey of Faith.......2006-11-07

My grandmother first introduced me to this book and in my humble opinion, it is one of the best books ever written. It was first published in 1942 although it is truly a timeless piece of work. The story is simple and follows the journey of a Roman soldier, Marcellus, who was responsible for overseeing the crucification of Christ. After the crucification, Marcellus, along with his faithful servant Demitruis, embark on a journey to discover more about the man that was crucified. Marcellus is naturally skeptical of the "miracles" that Christ performed during his time although he appreciates the teachings of Christ. The book follows the journey of faith that Demitruis and Marcellus follow, and the effects of this journey upon Marcellus and those he loves. Along the way, Marcellus meets many of Jesus' followers that cause him to question everything he knows and believes in. Hollywood made a cheesy movie version of this story with Richard Burton that was truly awful. Do not let the movie version keep you from reading this book because it truly is a beautiful retelling of the story of Christ and Douglas is a master story teller. He writes at a level that is not seen in today's crush of books that tend to follow the latest trend in selling books. Instead, he has an expansive vocabulary and draws you into a world that is fascinating and real despite the age of the story. Watching a non-believer come to grips with who Jesus was and what He meant to the world is a fascinating journey, for believers and non-believers alike and "The Robe" is truly a work of art.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Story.......2006-11-05

Great retelling of the story of Jesus from the point of view of one of the men who crucified him.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this ..........2006-02-27

As a classic many recognize in the movie version, I'd have to say to anyone that has seen the movie and not read the book, you're missing a lot. The movie is a cheap imitation of a novel that sucks you in from page one and doesn't let go until the end. Rarely do I read a book more than once ... I have read this book several times. Some authors have the inherent ability to draw you into the world they've created. Some authors possess the uncanny talent to make you really know the characters - love them or hate them. Some authors can make you feel as though you're walking side by side with the characters, living with them and enduring their emotions, seeing the things that they see. Some authors just have IT, and Lloyd C. Douglas is one of them.

The sweeping pageantry of one man's quest to find truth in a world corrupted is a quest that will stay with you long after the final page has been turned. Without giving too much away, the quick synopsis would be this: The story begins with Marcellus Gallio, the son of the rich Roman Senator Marcus Lucan Gallio, being commissioned to take command of the Roman fort at Minoa (Gaza). His trusted slave and friend, Demetrius, makes the journey with him, and they find at the fort a desolate scrap of land and a group of ruthless ruffians who don't take kindly to leadership. Marcellus takes firm control at Minoa, and it is from here that he and Demetrius end up in Jerusalem during Passover. It is at this particular Passover that Jesus is tried under Pontius Pilate and crucified. The detachment from Minoa, lead by Marcellus, is ordered to execute Jesus. During the Crucifixion, the officers get drunk to avoid the harsh reality of the task they've been assigned. They start to gamble and at one point, they gamble for Christ's robe. Marcellus wins, and his acquiring the Robe sets off a chain of events that leads to his eventual search for the truth behind the man who wore it. At first, as a man who does not believe in religion or in supernatural occurrences, Marcellus is skeptical of the miracles Jesus performed. He is especially skeptical when told of the Resurrection. At every point, he is searching for logical ways to explain the miracles. His transformation from a skeptic to a believer is logical in its progression and one that is miraculous to behold. Nothing comes across as choppy or unbelievable, and the change in Marcellus's character is a slow evolution over time.

In addition, I like that Jesus is not actually portrayed as a corporeal character in the book. Everything that deals with Him is after the Crucifixion, and Marcellus must learn about Him through the Disciples and the people who knew Him. Through their conviction, Marcellus discovers the truth and the belief he has sought.

This novel is the complete experience of everything a novel is supposed to be: Excellent characterization, believable, intriguing plot and conflict, solid sense of time and place, and a climactic ending of triumphant redemption that will leave you in tears. At the end, you're almost sad to turn the last page, disappointed to leave such a world - such an experience - behind. Though only my opinion, I cannot speak highly enough for this book and for this author who has completely revolutionized my opinion of what a novel is supposed to be.

5 out of 5 stars Great in scope and depth, thought-provoking.......2006-02-07

I had barely even heard of The Robe before I encountered this book at the bookstore. I've still never seen the movie. I had actually been searching for a book that was 'circa Jesus' whether or not it actually involved Jesus, just to better understand the politics of the time and enjoy some historical fiction, a genre I've always loved.

The Robe came as the answer to my search. It is the story of a young Roman's discovery of Jesus, though the story does alternate at times with Demetrius' and Diana's situations. There's a long exposition--useful, since this world is completely alien to us today--and it builds up to Marcellus winning the Robe. As Marcellus discovers the Robe, his attitudes begin to change, as do the attitudes of those who oppose his interest and support it.

The character development is wonderful--Demetrius, Marcellus, Senator Gallio, Diana, and even Lucia all develop and change throughout the course of the novel. There are some threads that are seemingly dropped to be left behind forever--the Demetrius/Lucia question, for example. Marcellus does seem to grow to appreciate Diana's beauties and her qualities as a woman too soon--for a boy who grew up knowing her as his "kid sister's best friend." I'm not sure that Simon Peter would have been quite so keen on the idea of converting Gentiles--either Douglas wasn't aware of his tendencies, or believes that he reconciled to the idea when in Rome, spurred by the interest of the Gentiles. Also, there's not really a sense of time--at all. Everything after the introduction of the Robe seems to happen all at once--no waiting, constant action and movement. However, these little nitpicky ideas of mine are miniscule when compared to the depth of the plot and the expanse it covers.

I love the idea of picking up the pieces after Jesus is gone and following his disciples in their formation of a new church--lost, alone, all muddling their experiences together to create the picture of Jesus, all piecing together their puzzles without the help of written material like the Gospels. It's a great idea--and could be easily botched--but Douglas makes it perfect. Also, he introduces perspectives of the time--questions like, "Why are all these people so excited when Jesus is dead?" Since we have the benefit of hindsight and the Gospels, it would be harder to imagine that question actually had to be asked. Also, Douglas is perfect at presenting a truly Greco-Roman perspective on a weird, unknown, Jewish sect centered in the middle of nowhere in crappy Palestine compared to the glory, water fountains, plumbing, acqueducts, baths, games, sports, military, and civilization of Rome.

When I finished this book, I immediately wanted to turn over and start again. Douglas covers strange, ancient worlds and ideas in depth, while also maintaining the scope of the problems of the Empire and the politics of the day. It's great--certainly the best I've read, and, dare I say it, better than Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. It's an oldie but goodie.

Book Description

Reality Therapy for the 21st Century aims to be the most comprehensive, practical, clearly illustrated examination of reality therapy currently available. Well-written in an easy to read style, the book includes an historically significant interview with William Glasser, MD, multicultural applications and research based studies. Its goal is to enhance the skills of helpers so that clients may live more effective lives through a total balance of love, health, and happiness.

The book significantly extends the practice of reality therapy. To help teach reality therapy, the author encapsulates the delivery system into the acronym 'WDEP'. It is expanded to include 22 types of self-evaluation which counselors and therapists can use to shorten therapy time in the current managed care environment. Each component of the delivery system is illustrated with dialogues so that the reader can see exactly how the system is practical and immediately usable.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not well-organized, but very informative.......2007-04-09

Robert Wubbolding is a protege of William Glasser, the creator of a form of therapy and counseling called "reality therapy," and this book is Dr. Wubbolding's restatement and update of the theory and practice of reality therapy.

The book starts in a rather unusual way, with several cases presented, that the author asks the reader to keep in mind, as the reader learns about reality therapy and its approach, but those cases are seldom mentioned after that. Then, we get a chapter on choice theory, which underlies reality therapy, and the author begins stressing two things about reality therapy: a person's history is not a big factor in treatment using reality therapy, and reality therapy tries to avoid jargon a confusing technical terms. In a way, those two issues represent two of the three minor flaws with this book as, while the author does discard many jargon terms used in other psychological theories, he creates others. Examples are: quality world to describe the values, beliefs, and other important aspects of a person's life; and the word power is redefined to be more akin to competence or mastery instead of meaning something like control or force.

As to the minimization of the history factor, the author gives the reader a lot of information on the history of the theory, while repeatedly stating that history is not a major factor in treatment. I know that there is a difference between over-emphasizing the a person's past in treatment, and emphasizing a theory's history in explaining the theory, but it still came off as a conflict to me.

Chapters Three through Eight describe how reality therapy came to be, how it differs from and is similar to other theories, how reality therapy can be used in different settings, and the atmosphere needed to make reality therapy work.

As you are reading this review, you are probably now thinking, "But what is reality therapy?" Well, that is the third minor flaw of the book: it is misorganized. It is not until the end of Chapter Eight, and then Chapter Nine, that we get to the description of the therapy approach. The first seven-and-a-half chapters are basically preamble.

Finally, we get to the meat of the theory in Chapter Nine. Robert Wubbolding uses the WDEP acronym to capture the essence of reality theory, with W standing for "wants", D standing for "do" or "doing", E for "evaluation", and P for planning. It is hard to describe reality therapy without making it sound simplistic, but I will try.

Wants: The basic wants of human beings fall into five main categories, according to reality therapy: physiological or survival wants (e.g., food, water, oxygen); freedom or autonomy (i.e., ability to have some control over one's life and make decisions for oneself); belonging (i.e., humans are generally social creatures who want some connectedness to others); power (here described more in terms of a sense of accomplishment, mastery, or competence); and fun, so that life can be enjoyed not only for what gets accomplished but also just for recreation or laughter or joy. Reality therapy sees all behavior as driven by choices meant to attain fulfillment of these five wants, and problematic behavior can be defined as ineffective efforts to meet these wants. As you might have noticed, some of these wants can be in conflict, especially freedom versus belonging, and power versus fun.

Doing: Moving from Wants to Doing is moving from goals to goal-fulfilling action. Reality therapy looks at all behavior as attempts, however successful or unsuccessful, at meeting one's needs. An example would be an adolescent who steals: he might steal because his family is short on food and money (survival), or because he gets a thrill from breaking rules (fun), or because his friends steal and he wants to impress them (belonging), or because he wants what he stole and feels that life has unfairly deprived him of it (freedom or autonomy), or because he feels that stealing is one of the few things he does well (power, or competence). To help him stop the action of stealing, the want, or combination of wants, must be identified, and alternative, more prosocial means of fulfillment, must be developed.

Evaluation: Dr. Wubbolding sees evaluation as the most important step in therapy, and often the least-emphasized one. The therapist must tactfully help the client look at how effective the client's actions were in meeting his or her own wants. Most people believe that most of what they do is the best choice at the time, and often find it difficult to acknowledge that they did, did not get them the goal they sought, and might have even moved them further away from fulfilling their wants. The book describes twenty-two different ways to evaluate the effectiveness of a client's actions in obtaining what they want, with examples being looking at how the actions fit with the client's beliefs and values (i.e., the client might have wanted more fun, but the choice of actions to create more fun might have also violated his or her own ethics or values), or the client might have been seeking more freedom, and actually done something that created more freedom, but they could not enjoy it much because freedom was not actually what they really wanted.

Planning: Once a client knows what he or she wants, has taken actions to fulfill those wants, and evaluated how well the actions led to satisfaction of wants, the next step in what is really a continuous cycle, is to plan of what to do next. If the actions satisfied the wants in a way that left the client happy and feeling ethically right, those actions should be continued, or used as a guide for future actions. If the actions did not meet the wants, which is what often leads a client to enter therapy, alternative methods and approaches need to be identified, with assistance from the therapist (as needed), and implemented. Dr. Wubbolding uses another acronym to describe good plans: SAMIICCC (Simple, Attainable, Measurable, Immediate, Involving help as needed, Consistent, Committed, Controllable by the client). The therapist helps the client develop and refine plans to act in new ways to meet his or her needs, as action is the most controllable aspect of human behavior (as compared to thought, feelings, or physical responses).

The rest of the book: The remaining chapters are devoted to identifying what attributes and skills a therapist needs to do reality therapy well, how reality therapy needs to be adapted to different cultures and settings, and the research that supports reality therapy. The first two of these closing chapters, on needed attributes and skills, and cultural adaptations, are done quite well, and are likely to be important reading to many practitioners.

The research chapter was superficially impressive, as many studies were listed. However, a close examination of the research cited, shows that many are single-case studies, or have statistically significant correlations that are still too small to be impressive. Some of the studies are mentioned, with a description of their findings, in narrative form, but no statistics are cited. For someone interested in the strength of the research that supports reality therapy, this chapter would be a good guide to use to dig up the actual studies cited, so that their empirical validity and strength can be further assessed.

Conclusion: While this book spends too much time on the history of the theory, and throws away frequently used psychological terms, only to create new ones, and while this book takes too long to get to the description of the practical usage of reality therapy, there is a lot of good information here. If I were to re-read it, I would likely read Chapters One, Nine, Ten, and Eleven. If someone wants to research reality therapy, they should add Chapter Twelve to that list.

Strengths: Very good information on using reality therapy, plus cultural adaptations.

Weaknesses: Too much history, creates new jargon, book is misorganized, with excessive preamble.

Summary: This is not a well-organized book, it has too much history and jargon; it does a good job of describing reality therapy, and how to use it.

Recommended: Yes

    Book Description

How should a judge's moral convictions bear on his judgments about what the law is? Lawyers, sociologists, philosophers, politicians, and judges all have answers to that question: these range from "nothing" to "everything." In his new book Ronald Dworkin argues that the question is much more complex than it has often been taken to be and charts a variety of dimensions--semantic, jurisprudential, and doctrinal--in which law and morals are undoubtedly interwoven. He restates and summarizes his own widely discussed account of these connections, which emphasizes the sovereign importance of moral principle in legal and constitutional interpretation, and then reviews and criticizes the most influential rival theories to his own. He argues that pragmatism is empty as a theory of law, that value pluralism misunderstands the nature of moral concepts, that constitutional originalism reflects an impoverished view of the role of a constitution in a democratic society, and that contemporary legal positivism is based on a mistaken semantic theory and an erroneous account of the nature of authority. In the course of that critical study he discusses the work of many of the most influential lawyers and philosophers of the era, including Isaiah Berlin, Richard Posner, Cass Sunstein, Antonin Scalia, and Joseph Raz. Dworkin's new collection of essays and original chapters is a model of lucid, logical, and impassioned reasoning that will advance the crucially important debate about the roles of justice in law.

      Book Description

A single mother's friendly, no-nonsense guide to balancing dating and parenting.

Embarking on the dating scene can be a fun though sometimes daunting prospect for any single woman. But for the more than 10 million single women in the U.S. with children at home, dating is a much more complicated matter. Whether uncoupled through divorce or death, single moms face a wide range of questions:

When will I be ready to date and how do I start? When-and what-should I tell the kids? What happens if I love the guy and the kids hate him?

In Mom, There's a Man in the Kitchen and He's Wearing Your Robe, Ellie Slott Fisher, a once-widowed, once-divorced single mother of two, speaks with refreshing candor about balancing dating and parenting. Drawing upon her own experience, the stories of many other women, and the advice of family psychologists, Fisher offers encouragement, strategies, and a healthy dose of humor for the single-but-looking mom-from how to meet men in the first place to when to introduce your date to the kids, from when and where to work sex into the equation to how to talk to your dating teenagers without looking like a hypocrite. Practical, funny, and hopeful, this is the one guide single moms need before jumping into the murky waters of the dating pool.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific "Real Life" Advice for Single Moms.......2006-05-11

Single moms are single, not dead. With humor, wisdom, and the insight only those who have "been there" can offer, this book helps single moms "get a life" without sacrificing the emotional needs of their chidren.

Single moms will also want to check out the completely revised third edition of The Complete Single Mother.

4 out of 5 stars Words of wisdom in a cute cover!.......2006-03-20

This book, though a fun quick read, contains gems of wisdom on topics ranging from what to expect from your kids, depending on their ages, and when and whether to introduce your new flame to them, to how to handle your boyfriend sleeping over. Whether you're just recently single again, or have been out of the dating scene for years, this book offers sound advice peppered with humor. It was very helpful and reassuring to me to be reminded that there are millions of single moms out there, and we all go through similar challenges in trying to find someone worth spending time with and exposing your children to! I've already lent this book to a friend!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, engaging, FUNNY book for single moms - and dads.......2006-01-21

There are few books out there to guide us single dads in the dating scene - while we do what's best for our children too. And men generally do not like to discuss these things with each over beers or poker. Here we have a delightful book we can read in the privacy of our own homes, and even share with male friends who are going through the same experience (and we don't even have to discuss, just hand the book over!). A book that's insightful, honest and well researched - and funny too!

3 out of 5 stars well done, but mostly for mom's and a bit lightweight.......2005-12-20

I read this book from the perspective of a single father who is dating because some
of the reviews suggested men would find it useful. And it was useful. It did gracefully discuss issues such as what to tell the kids, things to avoid, etc.

But it was clearly written for mothers; and, indeed, single mothers who have their
kids almost all the time. I also noted a lack of studies supporting the advice and,
indeed, most child-development advice seems to come from one expert (!?).

      5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2005-08-23

I found this book to be very helpful. I like that it was written by someone who has been there (twice), rather than a doctor/professional who has theories but no personal experience. I bought this book because I couldn't find any detailed information online regarding single-mom dating past the point of meeting someone and the initial introduction to the kids. This book goes into topics like public displays of affection, sleep-overs, moving in together, getting remarried, etc. I also like that it discusses all different age groups. Now that I've read it, my boyfriend is reading it too. It is written from the woman's perspective, but a man would certainly benefit from the information. As long as he can ignore or get past some occasional ex-husband bashing within the stories.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical novel.......2007-03-16

One of Brian Moore's best novels, BLACK ROBE is about the clash of cultures between the Jesuits in Canada and the Algonkin Indians they hoped to convert to Christianity. The Jesuits see the Indians as savages, while the Algonkins view the Black Robes as witches and even cannibals with regard to the Sacraments. The action of the novel revolves around a journey to a remote tribe by Fr. Laforgue with a group of Indians on their way to their winter hunting grounds. Laforgue also is accompanied by Daniel, a young man secretly in love with an Indian girl. Moore captures brilliantly the zeal of both groups and the passion of their beliefs. It's a powerful story, very realistic and dramatic, and very well told. It's also a real page-turner: once you start reading it, it's hard to put down. [It was also made into a terrific movie.]

1 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad book.......2006-12-07

Black Robe is one of my favorite movies and thoughtfully and accurately portrays life in early French Canada. Unfortunately, the book on which the movie is based, just....well, stinks. It's really dry, dull, and is laced throughout with so much profanity, it's pretty much unfit reading for high-school students. I know, they hear a lot worse at school every day but this is pretty bad. Forget the book and get the movie instead, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Tells it like it was.......2006-10-19

The Black Robe was actually based on the Jesuits coming to turn the Native Americans into Christians. He showed first hand how the Native Americans and the Jesuits really were. The Native Americans yes were crude in their talk, found sex as a vehicle of pleasure, however far worse was the way the Jesuits decided to convert the Native Americans at any cost even to the point of lying to them. The Jesuits spread small pox, killing off thousands of Native Americans because they had build no immunity to it and then, told them if they converted god would save them. All in all it was a great book and well written! An honest and compelling piece of fiction.

        1 out of 5 stars Offensive.......2006-02-17

I was assigned the reading of this book in my college "Literature & Religion" class. Unfortunately, what I had started to read as an adventurous and historical book contained such explicit sexual scenes and language that I refused to read the rest of it. There is no need to include profanity and sex to write a good book. [...] If you don't look at pornography, and don't order sex on TV, I would NOT recommend this book.

        5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2006-01-14

Black Robe is one of my favorite all-time novels. It helps that I'm particularly fascinated by the historical period it depicts, but I would recommend it to anyone. The interaction of the Native Americans and the Frenchmen is fascinating and presents a plausible demonstration of a meeting of cultures. Father Laforgue's personal journey is extraordinary, as he reconciles his faith and sheltered upbringing with the incomprehension of the natives and the harshness of the new land. Brian Moore pulls no punches in showing the cruel side of their culture, but he's not afraid to show how strange and even silly some European ways appeared to the natives. It's not politically correct, but it is evenhanded. Overall, it's a novel of ideas and adventure, tied together with very fine prose. In my opinion, it's an underrated classic.

5 out of 5 stars Collectible Trade Blankets.......2006-07-29

"...an Omaha girl was seen flitting among the tall prairie flowers, shifting her white blanket to suit her varying moods - now letting it float as she swept in ever-widening curves, or at the slightest sound, hiding her glossy head and laughing among its soft folds." ~The Omaha Tribe, Alice Fletcher

Robert W. Kapoun documents the wide variety of trade blankets in this fascinating study of Native American culture. He describes the blanket as a poetic statement that is given a voice by the wearer. If you have ever wrapped a blanket around yourself for comfort or used a scarf as a fashion statement, then you begin to understand how a robe can create various moods and gives the wearer a sense of fashion.

"These blankets are not merely being worn to provide warmth; they create a statement, if you will, which says, "These blankets are part of our culture." ~Robert W. Kapoun

The writing in this book is especially poetic and while learning about the cultural significance of the blankets, you may also start to feel a deeper connection with nature. These blankets promote a sense of community and are used as gifts, to carry children, to display wealth and to protect from the elements.

The designs on the robes make an interesting study when you see the charts for the terminology of the designs. Then this becomes art appreciation as you identify a dragonfly, a feather, clouds, lightning, turtles, teepees, rabbit ears, birds and leaves. The brightly colored blankets either have stripes or intricately woven patterns. This book identifies collectible blankets and also explores the historical significance.

The way to find modern versions of these blankets here at Amazon is to apparently type in "Pendleton Woolen Mills." I tried just about everything else.

          ~The Rebecca Review

          5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, unusual history.......2006-06-23

Over three hundred photos beautifully spice a history and survey of pre-World War II Indian trade blankets, revealing not only examples from the five major manufacturers, but some surprises confronting the common myth of Native blanket-making. Collectors, textile artists and Native American history enthusiasts alike receive a thorough survey of these blankets, how they became a symbol of Native history, and how they were traded and constructed. From machinery purchases and business transactions within the manufacturing industry to how tribal customers directed the Indian trade blanket designs and manufacturing process, LANGUAGE OF THE ROBE is a fascinating, unusual history.
