Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2007-06-07

This book is not only full of great recommendations, but also enjoyable reading for places one might not get a chance to visit. The food recommendations are, by and large, impeccable, though one might register a few minor cavils when one's favorite place isn't the same as that of the authors.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift.......2007-05-11

I am giving this to a well traveled person and it arrived on time and in perfect shape

3 out of 5 stars To Be Tasted.......2007-04-24

I know, back to non-fiction. I thought about reviewing this book later, but I tried to renew it from the library and it's on hold for another patron. That told me two things: (a) it needs to be back, pronto, and (b) someone else has an interest in this book! Maybe you would, too.

This is a National Geographic publication - a pleasant little square book, crisp pages, lovely font, fabulous retro graphics and stunning location photographs. I do enjoy a well-designed book! Nathaniel Lande and his son Andrew have compiled this comprehensive treasure trove of the 10 best of (as they say) "everything". The 10 best: sporting events, bar-b-que joints, literary and historical sites, cathedrals, flea and antique markets, things to do on a Sunday afternoon, etc etc etc. Nathaniel Lande was the director of TIME World News Service, a background fitting for this kind of globe-trotting spectacular.

I enjoyed flipping through this book in a kind of "so that's how the other half live" kind of stupor. I understand that I will likely never dine at/see/visit many of the places they recommend, primarily because of financial barriers. But I was also happy to see that some of the places I know and love are on the list. For example, the Point Reyes National Seashore made it as one of the 10 best "Travel Tips from a High-Minded, Impecunious Architecture Buff," in such company with Genoa, Italy, Acapulco, Mexico and Cape Town, South Africa. The Oregon Trail made it as one of the 10 best "Walks and Hiking Tours," along with places like the Cloud Forests of Costa Rica and Southwest Ireland. Yellowstone National Park made it as one of the 10 best "Landmarks," along with Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower.

I'm not sure this is a book worth purchasing, necessarily. Not unless you've just won a huge jackpot and are determined to live the most adventurous 10 years or so of your life. I do think if you happen to see it at the library, though, that it would be fun to look through and chat about with someone. Or maybe see if one of your favorite places made the list.

4 out of 5 stars The 10 Best of Everything: An Ultimate Guide for T.......2007-03-11

is ok, but this book do not mentioned many marvelous places. They need to travel more.

3 out of 5 stars I expected more.......2007-02-06

It is a good book with good information, but I expected too much more, it does not have any pictures so you can not get an idea of most of the places you are reading about.

Book Description

When Rona Jaffe's superb page-turner was first published in 1958, it changed contemporary fiction forever. Some readers were shocked, but millions more were electrified when they saw themselves reflected in its story of five young employees of a New York publishing company. Almost sixty years later, The Best of Everything remains touchingly—and sometimes hilariously—true to the personal and professional struggles women face in the city. There's Ivy League Caroline, who dreams of graduating from the typing pool to an editor's office; naïve country girl April, who within months of hitting town reinvents herself as the woman every man wants on his arm; and Gregg, the free-spirited actress with a secret yearning for domesticity. Jaffe follows their adventures with intelligence, sympathy, and prose as sharp as a paper cut.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Everything.......2007-03-28

Loved this book! Very scandalous for the fifties... Affairs, illegal abortions, career gals, all in NYC!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic!!!.......2006-03-15

What a great book!!! I loved the girls, the time period, and even though I hate New York City...I loved it in this book! I also bought the movie, so as soon as I finished the book, I watched the 1958 movie version...also wonderful!

This book follows four girls through new jobs, new loves, lost loves, unwanted pregnancies, and death in 1953 New York. The pace of this book was excellent, and the characters were people you really come to care about. Seeing how there's so much to this book, I'm not even going to try to summarize it, but it was great!

I can't wait to get my hands on more of Ms. Jaffe's books! I've added all of them to my wish list and hope they'll be just as entertaining as this book was!

3 out of 5 stars Best of Everything (THE BEST).......2005-08-20

I read this book when it was first published and now I have reread it and it is as good as the first time. I have also seen the movie many times and it is still after all these yrs my favorite movie. It has all the elements of comedy, love, hate, romance and mystery. I have always loved Hope Lange and although she is gone now, I still love her and love to see her in the movie The Best Of Everything

4 out of 5 stars Great quasi-trash.......2001-08-11

Ooooooh......this is one of those juicy summer reads that is so hard to put down. Diapers dragged the floor, salmonella dripped off thawing chicken breasts onto the counter and the phone rang out its throat as I eagerly read page after page of this middle-brow novel.
Joan Crawford is reponsible for me hunting this book down in Amazon.com's used book shop. I've seen the film of the same title many times, but it wasn't until my last viewing during a local Crawfordthon that I developed the itch the read the novel that inspired the movie. To my surprise, I loved the novel. The film was much campier (what movie with Ms. Crawford isn't?) than the novel, therefore less irritating to read than the movie is to watch. For one thing, Hollywood's presentation of the women in the film is much less rounded and tediously more condescending than in the novel. The "girls" in the movie dither and drivel and snivel far more than Jaffe wrote them doing.
What was eerie about the novel was the contemporary feel of the characters' difficulties in their lives. Remove some of the dated descriptions of New York, business tools, and sundry material goods, many of Jaffe's depictions of women entering adulthood in a male-oriented world of more than forty years ago could easily be written today. Sadly, many of the demoralizing situations that Jaffe's five women stumbled into are, with slight alterations, still perpetuated and experienced in these more enlightened times. I think this relevancy along with Jaffe's engrossing writing style are what make "The Best of Everything" such an enjoyable read. It is definitely worth the trouble it takes to get your hands on a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Women of New York.............2000-02-28

Rona Jaffe excels with her story of five women who live and work in New York in the 1950.s. She relates their career and love pursuits with uncanny insight. She writes about the loss of innocence, about a love that turns obsessive, about betrayal and abortion. Bold for its time and still relevant today the book is well worth a read. Jaffe's "Class Reunion" is also excellent and comes highly recommended.

Book Description

Ex•cel•lence (n.) 1. The clearly false and destructive theory that a company ought to be great at everything it does. 2. A mistaken goal in which the predictable outcome is that the company ends up world-class at nothing—not well-differentiated and therefore not thought of by consumers at the moment of need.

Based on exhaustive research, The Myth of Excellence provides conclusive evidence of the futility of trying to be excellent in all aspects of a commercial transaction—price, product, access, experience, and service. Instead, the strategy for your products and services should be to dominate on one element, differentiate on a second, and be at industry par (i.e., average) on the rest. Yes, it is okay to be average as long as your customers know specifically where and how you are superior and world-class.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Being Excellent By Yeilding Excellence and Defining Your Excellence.......2006-06-22

The Myth of Excellence - trying to be the best at everything makes wasteful use of your resources and confuses consumers. There are five attributes to any business transaction: price, service, access, product and experience. According to this study of 10,000 consumers, executives and client engagements, companies that excel dominate in one category, differentiate in another and are on par with the industry average on the other three. Customers buy for different reasons. It is an outmoded thinking that purchases are mainly based on lowest price or highest quality.

To survive and prosper you must know which attributes of the five that your customers value the most and concentrate on one of them. You do this while being above average on the next attribute and on par with the last three. If you fall below par on any of these, your business will be rejected.

Top businesses engage in customer relevancy - what the customer values most. Customers desire a personal experience that supports their individual value system. They are looking for recognition as individuals. Sam Walton used to ask his employees and customers what they would change if they owned his store - Walmart.

Lowest price is not important to most customers. They do want however a fair price and a feeling of saving money. Most companies fall behind on service because customers are always redefining what good service means. They want to know that they are being given at least due consideration. They expect a basic level of competence. Access has to do with ease of use and availability. Convenience and forthrightness of information is paramount in this attribute. Your product must be credible and of consistent quality. Finally the experience is more than entertainment. It is a sense of intimacy. Courtesy, appearance of staff and store, and respect are part of the experience.

Of these five, the attribute that is capitalized on must inspire the customer. It would intimately handle their needs and problems. It would indivually acknowledge and reaffirm the consumer and deliver a high level of trust. It will be 'the' factor that drives people to your store.

When it is discovered through survey and communications what your customers and potential customers value, and one of their main concerns is addressed with emphasis, and this value-proposition is shared with-in and with-out the company, prosperity will ensue.

Excellent book by two world-renowned business consultants.

Five Stars

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful but Not Perfect.......2006-05-21

This book points out something interestingly in favor of Christianity: That while (traditional) protestant Christianity became watered down, that since the 1950s, the global suicide rate rose by 60 percent.

This book will help show you how to maintain and improve your business, but it is wrong however in saying that you can't be excellent in all of the business attributes it mentions. It gives no evidence that you can't be good at all of them.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Marketing pays off.......2002-07-03

The success of any company always depend on the discipline of marketing, breaking off the malpractice adopted by and large by many companies. Respect, service, trust, genuine quality are the values to strengthen from the grass root levels. Fred Crawford and Ryan Mathews with a in-depth research of many companies reveals that customer service is the key to success and the customer experience is the prime dedicating factor consideration in time to come. The book is an insight to the companies to offer the best by examining their products and executing them with par excellence to stand by the competitive edge. Myth of Excellence is way of the wizard to gain the confidence of the customers. The idea to give a commission and link to something `free' is a common notion. The rates pulled up to a 20% and than the discount offered only stems out indecent bargain ethics. Brand name and quality are in demand and customers often resort to the quality and service of the consumer products. Catching promotions do attract but the consumer stays unimpressed if quality, service & trust is not offered.Trust is the key of a merchant's scale to shoot up the success chart. This book is a read for CEOs and Company marketing Dept executives to play their roles and create a brand offering the best of the best to keep the customer list hooked to their line of products. Appreciation of the customers motivates the team for a success. This book is a good read for CEO's of Companies whofall below standards and it stands a handy resource guide to marketers who wish to excel and stand a `class apart' wading the competition to be on top. I recommend this book as it has the value guidance for Companies who want to reach the `winning edge'- Whatever be the product!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Insiteful, and Highly Relevant.......2002-06-21

A very good book, not only easy to read but enjoyable and motivating as well. I believe these guys are right on the money with their research and analysis. I agree with the interrpretations of the research data and found myself saying "Yes, that's just how I feel." in response to many of the stories of customer interactions.

I believe that this book addresses the most important areas of business today and identifies what consumers are "screaming" for - SERVICE, RESPECT, etc. Most of this book is common sence - it's amazing how uncommon it is that these principles are put into practice. We are at a transition in the business world where product quality is easily duplicated by many competitors. Customer service and the customer "experience" will be the deciding factor in the decades to come. I would hope that all businesses would buy this book and work towards being the kind of companies used in the case studies here. What a pleasure it would be if all of our day to day dealings were with companies of this caliber!

The authors recognition of the end of the Information age and movement into a new age where "appreciation and reverence for life" become the motivating factors for those who wish to succeed, shows just how in-tune they are with the world around us. This recognition will be invaluable to all businesses as time goes on - now, who will take advantage of it and use it wisely?

I highly reccommend this book for everyone from the CEO to the consumer. People are asking (demanding) for RESPECT, as they should, and the businesses that understand this and embrace this will be the future winners.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Analysis.......2002-03-13

I loved the analysis and explanations. At first I missed the relevancy of the conceptual models. The examples of the attributes were both enjoyable and well researched and the tables at the conclusion where extremely interesting and insightful. The authors make valid points with regard to consumer relevancy.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars try selling used books on Amazon.......2007-07-08

Some of the ideas mentioned seem like more work than a traditionl job and some are too artsy craftsy for me, but women today do have more options than ever before. With the introduction of the internet, we are no longer doomed to sell vitamins to friends, dream about life on top of a pyramid, or set up childcare services in our home, if we're already stretched too thin with our own motherly duties. I wrote a book about selling books n Amazon: 'The Stay-at-Home Moms Secret Guide,' because it is one of the lowest risk, lowest investment, profitble ideas that I have come across. Who would have thought it possible to tap into the biggest book bazaar in the world, reaching across the globe, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, from your own home. Sorry to take this opportunity to plug my own idea, but, if you want a real opportunity to make extra-cash (I make $4,000 a month working part-time), I think I've found one of the best ideas available. Scouting for used books is fun! But, if selling used books isn't for you, you might find somethig in Priscilla Huff's book. Just don't give up. I tried a few other options before finding one that really brought in the money I need--there's something out there that's rght for you too.

5 out of 5 stars Home Business.......2007-02-06

Lots of great information in this book. If you are interested in starting a home business this book really helps you put things together.

4 out of 5 stars A Good First Step .......2006-12-12

I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it. This book would be a good exploratory resource for them. Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses. Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.

3 out of 5 stars Not a book for the 21st century.......2006-05-08

I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women.

2 out of 5 stars Great Career Change or Second Income Home Business Ideas.......2006-03-21

You may want a home business for a second income, or maybe a whole career change - there are thousands of options for earning a living now. I started homebusinessadvisers.com in 2004, and this is a book I read in preparation. It was useful for an over 40 woman like me. There is so much info around, it's hard to filter through it. In the end my own website has become a place to review the latest home based business ideas. Thanks to Priscilla for the initial ideas.

Aptly named, The Everything Book is a hodgepodge of early learner words, numbers, poems, and concepts. But, without a doubt, the gorgeous illustrations are the real star of the show, created by Denise Fleming by pouring colored cotton fiber through hand-cut stencils. Readers and art appreciators of all ages will want to surround themselves with the delicious, ripe colors. Whether she's writing about traffic lights ("We all must obey them / Even the Queen"), a robin's nest, or the colors of fruit, Fleming imbues her subjects with vivid hues and exquisite shapes. Children will pore over the loosely organized book; the sparse structure allows readers to create their own stories, lingering over Summer, for example (with "summer" as its only text), to count the flies, spy the squirrel, and admire the pair of sunflowers.

Readers can practice the alphabet, count crocodile eggs and ladybugs, make faces, learn about shapes, and play with kitchen "toys": cups, pans, spoons, bags. Towards the end of the book, the theme becomes nighttime-sleepytime, with verses about winking blinking fireflies and bunnies and chicks getting ready for bed. Children will love the big, color-drenched pictures and simple words. Grownups will want to frame the art and hang it all over their house. Fleming's In the Small, Small Pond was a Caldecott Honor Book. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars The Everything Book.......2007-10-03

I purchased this for my 10 mo. old grandson, however, it has a little too much detail to keep his attention. I think he will enjoy it more as he gets older.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure how to read.......2007-09-09

I bought this book for my little one. It's a little rough to read to her. I think it will be easy for her to read as she gets older. Drawings are rough, not the sharp contrast they recommend for the first months. It's alright, but not a necessity of an early library.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Book has, well, everything.......2007-05-14

My granddaughter loved this title that I borrowed from the library. Bought a copy for her. She loves to find and count the ladybugs on nearly every page. A good concept book for pre-schoolers.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Likes it.......2007-03-21

My baby likes this book a lot. He especially likes the page with all the baby faces, although I would like to see more positive expressions (there is only one happy, smiling baby). I bet the version for older babies is good too. I'll get that one later when my baby won't tear the pages. This version is great for now.

3 out of 5 stars Cute Book.......2007-01-13

my niece loves all the different pictures... although, i found it a little too cluttered... informative and fun book for kids though

        5 out of 5 stars An excuse.......2007-05-07

Sorry folks, I bought this book as a present for a man in Trinidad. He seems happy with it, but I looked at it only to see if it was the kind of thing he wanted.

I tried to buy the 2007 version of Songwriter's Market, but
was told it couldn't be delivered to a WI or Danish address. However, I'm not sure if this was on Amazon,

        5 out of 5 stars Great Overview.......2006-04-16

If you want to understand music publishing - get this book. It starts with music publishing then and now, writing a song, getting it copyrighted and copyright law, how to go about getting it published, the royalties artists and publishers should receive, how you can start your own company, as well as the different organizations for artists and publsihers. It has information on ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, the three performing rights societies, with a good synopsis on each. This book covers the nuts and bolts of the music publishing industry and any serious individual interested in learning more about this subject should have this book.

        5 out of 5 stars A TUNE OF SUCCESS.......2004-03-23

If I had to recommend just one book on music publishing, this would be it. The author elaborates on the origin and history of the music publishing business, and most importantly, thoroughly explains to you in detail what music publishing is, in addition to providing you with real life examples of how it works. You will have a much greater understanding and deeper appreciation of this complex, and lucrative facet of the industry once you've read this short, useful, well-written book.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Starter Book.......2003-12-11

As a songwriter and aspiring Music Publisher, I found the background and history of music publishing along with candid information involved with it to be very enlightening. This book gives detailed information and also give step by step instructions on how to get started in the business of music publishing. I was very well impressed.

5 out of 5 stars A very cost effective way to understand music publishing.......2003-04-28

This book was very attractive to me because of the price. I spent upwards of 70 dollars a book for similair music industry reference material, and this is one of the best books I own. This book, for the most part, has much of the information that "Music Publishing" by Tim Whitsett has, but is more expensive. Although Whitsett goes into a little more detail, you save 30 dollars. If you have the money, get both to have an arry of information.

The credentials that Poe has in writing "Music Publishing: A Song Writers Guide" is very amazing and the reader gets the understanding of the mistakes people have made in the publishiong aspect of music. I must warn you, that if you are not used to reading of the music industry you should not start off with this book. This is more for the people who have a little bit of general background about music in general. Other than that; a great, inexpensive resource on publishing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book and Present.......2007-08-30

Bought this for my Mother In Law to be to give her subtle hints about how a wedding is done.

She read it and loved it! And has since been more understanding about what I want for my wedding.

3 out of 5 stars Just another MOG book.......2007-03-09

After reading online reviews, I purchased MOG: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy the Best Wedding Ever. A complete reading did not provide the type of information I was expecting. The book appears to be a 'cut & paste' version of a MOB's planning guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for an MOG.......2005-09-19

After relying heavily on Sharon Naylor's "Mother of the Bride" book for my daugher's wedding last year, I am just as impressed with her new book just in time for my son's wedding next summer. Great, practical tips for an odd situation as an MOG.

5 out of 5 stars A Joy to be the Mother-of-the-Groom.......2005-07-08

Mother of the Groom by Sharon Naylor is a godsend for the woman whose son is about to be married and who wants to do the "right thing." How to chose a dress (even plus size), what to offer to pay for, and many other delightful and helpful facts are spelled out with wit and style. I found myself consulting Mother of the Groom over and over as our son's wedding approached. Sharon's wonderful insights helped make his wedding day extra special.

        5 out of 5 stars Bye-bye beige dress!.......2005-06-28

FINALLY! A comprehensive resource for the mother of the groom. I was sure I was destined to have only the old adage "wear a beige dress and keep your mouth shut" as my only advice. But thanks to Ms. Naylor, I have lists and charts and an entire appendix full of internet sites to refer to in my planning. Thank you for coming to the aid of grooms' mothers everywhere!
