5 out of 5 stars The Martyr's Song.......2007-09-04

This book had me glued to my chair. I read it in two sittings. It always amazes me what Christians in other countries go through while we, in the USA, sit around complaining that there's nothing good on TV.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Expecting.......2007-08-28

After reading more recent publications by Ted Dekker, all of which I enjoyed immensely, I decided to order some of his older books. This was simply a waste of money. While the concept of this book is thought provoking, the actual reading is less than what one expects from the caliber of a Dekker book. Not to give away any of the plot, but one character in the book has glimpses into the heavenly realm. These glimpses show that heavens occupants have mass giggling sessions and often zoom and jump through the air like Superman. This was my main issue with this book. While I am assured that heaven will be a place of great joy and pleasure, these particular sections of the book came across as juvenile. As with anything, everyone's taste in reading material is different, so if you are truly interested in this book, go ahead and order it. However, take my advice on this and only order ONE book of the Martyr's Song Trilogy to see how you will like it. I ordered all three, and all of them are written in the same style...which is nothing like his current work.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-06-19

I think this is my second favorite of Dekker's books, it is amazing I would STRONGLY recommend it. It's not as much of a thriller but it's just an awsome book. I haven't read the whole series yet but I'm going to start on Heaven's Wager next I think. I would recommend any of Ted Dekker's books, especially Showdown.

5 out of 5 stars The Martyr's Song.......2007-01-11

Another great job by Ted Dekker. I listened to this book while on the road for work and found that I was looking forward to the drive so that I could listen to it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in better understanding our Christian walk and the prices paid by other's who were not willing to deny Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Dekker at his best.......2006-11-01

_The Martyr's Song_ is pure and simple, Ted Dekker at his best. The story is riveting and moving. It's a novella, so you can read the whole book in one sitting, but its punch far outweighs its length. Get it, read it, be moved by it. Dekker writes with passion and the reader can feel it. By the way, the Todd Agnew song on the CD it comes with is great, too. You'll listen to it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! What a ride!.......2007-08-21

I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. It helped me gain a better understanding of love, sacrifice and sin. I actually gave this book as gifts. Wow! What a ride!

5 out of 5 stars Engaging!!.......2007-06-15

Another outstanding novel by Ted Dekker. Filled with everything from suspense to romance and faith and love. Emotionally engaging right from the start.

5 out of 5 stars Now I get it!.......2006-04-10

I graduated from college with a major in Bible.

I have preached in California and done mission work in India and Japan. I have read Hosea and listened to Michael Card sing.

But I have never understood the love of God like I do now after reading this book.

I was so frustrated by Helen's repeated forays back to Glen. Then at some point it hit me. This is what I am doing when I return to my favorite sins. I am putting God though pain, I am rejecting his love. But like the Father of the Prodigal, he welcomes me back. Like Jan welcomes Helen back.

Somehow Ted Dekker has the gift to make Biblical truth plain and relevant to me.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2005-12-12

This book is basically a romance with a major lesson. Had I known it was a romantic type book before starting it, I'm sure I would have passed on it as those have no interest for me. That would have been a major mistake. This is an excellent novel with a great message.

The story is primarily set in the United States in the 1960s. It has some flashbacks to Bosnia in WWII. The protagonist, Janjic Jovic, was a Yugoslav partisan during the war with a band that performed some horrific acts. This was mostly due to the pushing of the leader, Karadzic, who was a major bad guy. Jovic was heroic in challenging Karadzic over some of his atrocities. He ended up being imprisoned for his valor.

Two decades later Jovic is a successful author in Atlanta who has written a bestselling account of events during the war including Kardzic's evils such as the martyrdom of a priest and a young girl who refused to renounce Christ. This was a major life altering event for Jovic and many of his readers.

Jovic ends up becoming involved with Helen, who is a drug addict who is the sexual slave of a particularly evil man, Glenn Lutz. The story has elements that seem utterly absurd on the face. Jovic almost instantaneously develops an unconditional love for Helen who continues going back to Lutz for drugs in exchange for sexual favors.

Although few would continue to love and tolerate her in the face of her continual betrayals, Jovic does so with fervor. On the surface, he appears to be the biggest schmuck on the planet. However, Dekker does a masterful job of showing how we are Helen and Jovic represents Christ's love in the story.

To avoid spoiling the storyline, I will refrain from further commentary here. I would highly recommend this book and encourage readers to really focus on the underlying message. It is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 3.......2005-12-06

I thought When Heaven Weeps was the best book in the Martyr Song series. I couldn't get engaged with Heaven's Wager and I did enjoy Thunder of Heaven but this one was the better.
I really like Ted's use of love in his stories. It challenges us to look at how we view Christ's love or Christian love and review it. Are we just going through the motions? It should cause us to ask ourselves, "Would I go to the lengths that the main character does in this story?"
The villan(s) created great tension. If you have read Ted's other books before this one you would not know how the outcome would be. Ted has no problem killing good characters and causing you to blink a couple times.
This was a great action/love story.

Novelist Ted Dekker spins an action-packed story of drug cartels, the CIA, and the power of God to redeem tragedy for good in his inspirational thriller Thunder of Heaven. Life in Venezuela holds nothing but good things for Tanya Vandervan, her missionary family, and her love interest, the musclebound Shannon Ritcherson, who lives with his parents on an adjoining coffee plantation. When terrorists take over the land, both families are murdered and Tanya and Shannon believe each other to be dead. Grieving her losses, Tanya moves to the United States, where she changes her identity and seeks to lay her nightmarish past to rest. Years later, Tanya is inexorably pulled back to Venezuela by visions from God, and finds that Casius, an assassin who has his own agenda for revenge, may hold the key to questions about her past and her future. Dekker relies on a fast-paced plot rather than finely crafted prose to move his story along, and those who like their novels served up with plenty of heroics and a dash of romance will find this an engaging tale. --Cindy Crosby

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-07

Words don't do Ted Dekker justice I love all his books! This was one of those books once you pick up it is so hard to put down!!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Thought Provoking.......2006-12-10

I have several Ted Dekker novels and they are all entertaining and thought provoking. 'Thunder Of Heaven' is no exception.

Dekker has blended an action plot involving terrorists with a nuclear device, romance, and spiritual themes. I am not one who enjoys romance, but the author does it in a way that is not obnoxious or overdone.

The action rolls along at a good pace and keeps the reader's interest throughout.

There was one error that should have been avoided. This may be somewhat of a spoiler so read further at your own risk. When one of the characters is imprisoned for a terrorist plot, he is located in the 'Canyon City Correctional Facility'. A participant in international terrorism would not be incarcerated in a local or state facility. It is a federal crime so he would be in a federal prison. With the type of crime and skill set/threat level possessed by this person, he would likely be housed in a United States Penitentiary (USP). This may not be a huge issue, but I think that technical accuracy is important in a good novel.

In spite of that one issue, I would recommend this book as well as any others I have read by Dekker. He is a highly skilled author who keeps one's attention.

5 out of 5 stars Changed My View of Christian Novels.......2005-12-09

Allow me to be honest: I resisted reading Christian fiction for a long time because I thought it would be, well, boring. I'm a Christian, but sermons are for the pulpit, not the printed page. Or so I thought. Thunder of Heaven completely sideswiped me with a great opening, a fast pace, and an interesting cast of characters who pop with realism. My favorite is Casius, a CIA assassin. The book follows him and the daughter of two married missionaries as they grapple with the slaughter of their parents and try to stop a terrorist attack. The jungle setting is a cool stage for this story to play out. The only time I realized I wasn't reading a thriller shaped by any of the great writers of our time is when the author dropped in a spiritual insight or two-and even those were interesting. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd place out of 3.......2005-12-06

Thunder of Heaven is better than Heaven's Wager yet not as great as When Heaven Weeps. Now of course this is all relative to your kind of story. Thunder of Heaven is a shorter story that has more action than the previous 2. It takes place in a jungle and that setting alone creates a great plot. I don't know if Ted intended a twist in it or not but after the first attack on the homes I knew who was who in the future. The surprise wasn't as big as say Thr3e was...but again, Ted himself has said that he writes different kinds of stories each time. He's almost like the book version of M. Night Shaymalan(sp?)

4 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2005-01-24

I really enjoyed this novel. This is the first book I've read by Dekker and I found him to be an excellent read. It delievers a good blend of action, revenge, romance, and religion. I also liked the fact that the story was told from most of the character's point of view. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I'm not really religous and that whole "love of God" thing held no meaning for me. Altogether a great story with some issues about terrorism that hit close to home.

      Book Description

It was an absolutely perfect day...until everything went absolutely perfectly wrong.

Kent Anthony is a brillant software engineer who is cashing in on a brilliant career. He's finally living the idyllic life, far from thoughts of theft and murder and other kinds of horrible criminal behavior.

He's left his past far behind...or so he thinks.

Ted Dekker delivers a fascinating story of the almost perfect crime, interwoven with a tale of bittersweet love that is almost enough to save a soul. A story that will bring you face-to-face with a hidden world more real than most people ever realizes; a world where the unseen is more powerful than anything seen.

Heaven's Wageris a Martyr's Song story spun from the events that happened at the end of World War II when a band of embittered soliders played a cruel game with a peaceful village. It was then, in the midst of chaos and pain that the Martyr's Song was first heard. It was then that the window into heaven was first opened.

Each of the Martyr's Song novels is independent and may be read in any order.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to read the other two!.......2007-08-15

My first Ted Dekker book was Thr3e. Closely following was Black, Red and White. Dekker had me sold from the get-go. At times I do get a little lost in the characters, but it's the twists and turns that Dekker is so good at and you have no idea how they will all weave together. Heaven's Wager was fantastic! Having gone through a series of devastating circumstances myself in 35-8 years, I completely identified with Kent's confusing thoughts. What is real, what is a dream and how dare I think such thoughts. Coming out on top I look back and see how the wager for my soul was just as real as this characters. If you haven't been through hell and back perhaps you can scoff and say ridiculous! If you have...then you know what hell looks like. Helen's intercessory prayer walks are phenomenol. Again, if you've been in Heaven's whisper, you know what Heaven sounds like! All I can say is Dekker knows each of these paths and describes them like no one who hasn't been there can! You won't be sorry you purchased this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Ted!!.......2007-07-02

Awesome and consistently well done like I've come to expect from Ted Dekker. This author is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Great Story With Spiritual Dynamics Throughout.......2007-01-07

Heaven's Wager combines suspense, intrigue and spiritual warfare into a compelling novel.

The protagonist, Kent Anthony, loses everything he holds near and dear, much like Job of the Old Testament. Unlike Job, Kent was not a believer at the time. The losses in his life pushed him further away from God. In spite of that, God keeps working on him in a variety of ways.

The spiritual battle rages on while the other human events of the book play out.

It all combines into a page turner story. I have read several of Dekker's novels. Every one of them has been very good. This is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book with Rushed Ending.......2006-12-28

This book was really engaging. It puts you right into the life of Kent Anthony. In the beginning he loses his wife, son, and is screwed over by his superiors at work for a six-figure bonus. Yeah, he is really angry. His plan for revenge is a little slow, but once it picks up pace it is really really engrossing. The Christian elements are strong, but are worked well into the story. The end is rushed. The novel ends in an abrupt fashion and doesn't really follow the slow pace that the rest of the novel is set in. This book is a quick read for a good thriller though. I will be reading other Ted Dekker books. And from what I've read they are tons better than this one!

      5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Novel.......2006-08-02

How do you respond when the unfairness of life deals you a blow? What if you were a modern day Job and in a matter of days lose your major source of income, your wife then your only son?

For weeks, Kent Anthony has been spending hours to create a complex computer program called the Advanced Funds Processing System (AFPS) for his Colorado bank. Anthony planned to share in the profits from the new system, which would revolutionize the banking system. Then his wife suddenly falls ill and dies. Instead of Kent presenting the system at a large bank meeting in Orlando, he is forced to rush home to the bedside of his dying wife. He is robbed of his moment in the limelight and his boss takes credit for the new system. Kent plans the perfect crime--which would have succeeded except for the intangible spiritual force of prayer.

Because of his careful programming, Kent has planned a backdoor into the program called Rooster. The secret entrance is buried in the program and seamless in entry. With months of careful research, Kent plans a bank robbery to get his revenge. He plans to steal $20 million. During the grief, his son is suddenly killed in a car accident. Kent plunges into a deeper commitment to the bank robbery.

While Kent was never a believer, his wife, Gloria and son, Spencer, were Christians along with his mother-in-law, Helen. After the deaths of Gloria and Spencer, Ted Dekker begins to increase the focus on another character--Helen who is an intercessor. God has called her to walk for miles in prayer--without any explanation except to pray for Kent.

Throughout Kent's preparation for his crime, his mother-in-law faithfully prays. HEAVEN'S WAGER contains a powerful spiritual connection to the reality of a good page-turning drama. Slipped into the prose is some truth for every Christian about how to intersect their real life with spiritual reality.

HEAVEN'S WAGER marks the first book in a three book series from Dekker. Readers will be lining up for the next book in this series. I strongly recommend this new book.

        Book Description

Horst Wessel composed the most famous Nazi song, and only became famous after his murder in January 1930. His death was used by Joseph Goebbels as a means to swing the German public against the Communists. Goebbels realized that Wessel was intelligent and politically astute and sent him to Vienna to organize the Nazi youth. He quickly became known for his brutality and on his return to Berlin his men broke in to the Communist headquarters in Berlin and seriously injured four Communist workers. His shooting was in part revenge for this act and in part due to an argument with his landlady, who was angered by his prostitute girlfriend. Goebbels was quick to spot the potential sympathy he could exploit from Wessel's death. Goebbels also organized a funeral for the "martyr" which 30,000 people attended. Some months before he died Wessel had composed the verses to what would become Horst Wessel Lied, but it only gained popularity when a choir of Stormtroopers performed it at his funeral. By 1931 it had become the official anthem of the Nazi party. The song is still banned in Germany today.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Song of Songs.......2005-10-06

I have read ten or so books on the Song of Songs, and none can compare to this one!! If you want you're heart to be touched by the fire of God, and radically challenged, this book is for you. Wurmbrand himself was tortured for many years, and the experiences of martyrs he knew, as well as others are woven into this book masterfully to explain the beauty and depth of God's heart as expressed in the Song of Solomon. This book is on my top three list of books, with "The Singing God" by Sam Storms, and "The Pleasures of Loving God" by Mike Bickle. If you enjoy this book, also be sure to read "Song of Songs: Journey of the Bride" written by Dr. Brian Simmons. Dr. Simmons' book journey into the Song of Songs was inspired by a personal meeting with Richard Wurmbrand as well as "The Sweetest Song".
