Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The greatest fantasies of the 20th century are J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle. Regrettably, the Earthsea Cycle has not received the fame and sales of Tolkien's trilogy. Fortunately, new Earthsea books have appeared in the 21st century, and they are as powerful, beautiful, and imaginative as the first four novels. The fifth novel and sixth book of the Earthsea Cycle is The Other Wind.

The sorcerer Alder has the power of mending, but it may have become the power of destruction: every night he dreams of the wall between the land of the living and the land of the dead, and the wall is being dismantled. If the wall is breached, the dead will invade Earthsea. Ged, once Archmage of Earthsea, sends Alder to King Lebannen. Now Alder and the king must join with a burned woman, a wizard of forbidden lore, and a being who is woman and dragon both, in an impossible quest to save Earthsea.

Ursula K. Le Guin has received the National Book Award, five Nebula and five Hugo Awards, and the Newbery Award, among many other honors. The Other Wind lives up to expectations for one of the greatest fantasy cycles. --Cynthia Ward

3 out of 5 stars Another overrated and dreary sequel to an otherwise wonderful trilogy.......2007-08-21

Although I'm a big fan of the first three books of the Earthsea series, I think that this latest book (as was the case with Tehanu), was both overrated and underwhelming. It weighed in at just over 200 pages, which is somewhat anemic, and the book plods along at a slow pace ... and is unfortunately somewhat dreary and predictable.

IMHO, this series should have remained the trilogy that the author first envisioned it as ... books 4 and 5 are just anemic tack-on stories that lack the magesty and wonder of the original three books. There's neither wonder, nor savor, in these latest offerings. I found book 5 to be somewhat more satisfying than book 4, but that's not saying much, because I didn't really care for book 4.

Kudos to the authoress for typing up a philosophical loose end regarding the concept of death and afterlife in her world ... but she could, and should, have covered the same material by combining books 4&5, pulling a plot comb through it, and getting the combined book down to 300 pages.

1 out of 5 stars Slow with an Incomprehensible ending.......2007-04-10

Let me preface this with my Earthsea background. I read the first 3 books when I was young and loved them. Then did them again on audio a couple years ago and enjoyed the 1st and 3rd books but thought the 2nd one was slow. Then I read -Techanu- and thought it was more like an interlude with a plot added in at the end for good measure and seemed like an interlude. -Stories of Earthsea- was barely passable and now this -The Other Wind- left me with a final bad taste for a series I loved for a long time.

It was nice to hang out with some old friends (Ged, Tenar etc...) but at some point toward the end it started this downward spiral into incomprehensibility. There would be section I just didn't get but I'd just move on hoping that it would make sense later. It never did. When it ended I had no idea what had happened. Was it just too simple? I do see a lot of reviewers saying that the ending was predictable. I don't even know who was still alive at the end. It seemed like a bunch of snippets of action that never got resolved. Was it some type of literary experiment?

I'm not sure, but my final stance on Earthsea is: Read the first 3 books and pretend the others don't even exist.

5 out of 5 stars Its hard to imagine a better book than this.......2007-03-06

I first read the Earthsea books over a quarter century ago...and just recently re-read them all, so as to be able to appreciate Tales From Earthsea and The Other Wind. This last book and this series is on a par with the great works of Tolkien and CS Lewis. The story is told forcefully and yet gently...allowing to reader to discover the inner story at their own pace. Having taken over a week end finish the last 50 pages so that I could savour it, I am both joyful at the conclusion and sad that its done.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy at its best.......2006-06-18

The Other Wind is the best fantasy novel I have read in many years, as good as anything LeGuin has written. It is both an enjoyable story and a profound meditation on life and death, and the writing is beautiful. Read it.

4 out of 5 stars A Complex, Profound Scope Within A Simple Story.......2005-09-23

How can one quite define or put one's finger on the essence of a Le Guin book - particularly an Earthsea one? I'll tell you one thing, I have not even read all of the stories and have even 'skipped' some according to the true, written sequence but I have come to realize that each book has a special quality unto itself WITHIN the greater, Earthsea context and that each stands on its own as a result. Le Guin does not 'pen stories' to fill out narrative time-lines; she writes each book for a purpose - something she wants to convey to her readers. When a writer does that, the story can become a part of the reader's experience of life. After 'Tombs of Atuan' - which gripped me for its intense HUMANITY in the midst of all its fantasy when I first read it 17 years ago - could we expect Le Guin to abandon Tenar just as she regained her true identity once more, whether Ged was the hero of Earthsea or not? Thus was born Tehanu.
In 'The Other Wind', Le Guin sets out to fulfill the destinies of Tenar, Ged, Therru/Tehanu, and even Earthsea itself. A tall task? Yes. There WERE moments in the book that I felt Le Guin was 'cheating' or skimming, not wanting to get as involved in these deep matters as her own premise seemed to demand. We have a simple mender of pots who dreams of his recently deceased wife calling and reaching to him from beyond the low stone wall which separates the living realm from the dead one. The fabric of the Equilibrium between the two and between the realms of dragons and men is threatened and all Earthsea is in danger of oblivion unless it is restored. In a last desperate journey, King Lebannen travels with a motley coterie of disparate individuals (including Tenar, Tehanu, Alder the pot mender, the dragon-turned-woman Irian, and a mysterious Kargish princess) who represent all lands and creatures of Earthsea to Roke Island and the Immanent Grove in order to reach the 'stone wall' - and tear it down.
And in the healing of Earthsea, Tenar lets go of her grown daughter (Tehanu) whom she can no longer protect, Lebannen bridges his lands with those of the Kargs through marrying the princess, Alder goes to forever join his wife, and Ged truly finds happiness with a returning Tenar.
A special note on Tehanu, whose name-sake book you spend reading in its entirety in an attempt to fully grasp her true self and powers. THIS book sees this scarred, quiet girl grown into a young woman who finds herself at last - and the reader will be both nodding and fully satisfied with what she discovers about herself.
The scope of this book could be argued to be too vast but having read it I find myself amazed that Le Guin could have dealt with it as well as she did and yet still have satisfied all of the 'human' sub-plots at the end. A true Earthsea fan will enjoy this book. A high action Fantasy junkie may have difficulty with it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a stunning book!!.......2002-01-26

I found Tom Mangelsen's gallery in Jackson a few months ago, and while I was there, I had a chance to see many of his just downright stunning images.

As an aspiring wildlife photographer, I truly appreciate the superb work of Tom Mangelsen. Also, while in his gallery, I had the chance to talk to as well as meet Mr. Mangelsen himself.

This book is just simply stunning. I cannot think of any other description. The many different images of the polar bear in its natural environment has to be seen to be appreciated.

What I like the most about this book over so many other "nature" books is that we get to see the many facets of the polar bears life, from the tender side with a mother and her babies, to the savage nature of these beautiful animals...not just some glossy expose that says nothing.

I would encourage anyone who loves nature photography, whether you are a "couch" photographer/explorer or are planning on a career in wildlife photography.

Heartily recommended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best book of the best nature photographer.......2001-02-14

I discovered the work of Thomas Mangelson about ten years ago in Jackson, Wyoming, when I stumbled across a gallery devoted to his work. The most famous image there, the one of two grown polar bears "dancing," is on the cover of this book.

The book encapsulates all the artistry of this outstanding photographer. As difficult as it is to capture wildlife images, it's doubly so when you are photographing white animals against snow! Mangelson spends some four months a year in the Arctic, enlarging his huge repertoire of images. I can't begin to imagine the patience and meticulous attention to detail that is required to gather these pictures, but I'm glad Mangelson can!

I love the fact that this book shows the chronological sequence in the life of a bear family, and also that it doesn't have captions on each page. That allows you to follow the sequence of images undisturbed by human intrusion - you become a part of the life cycle, so to speak. Mangelson's work enables the viewer to see the bears as a complex family unit in addition to their usual portrayal as hardy predators. It cannot fail to move the viewer; this is a book to savor again and again.

I'm a huge fan of just about every image this photographer has ever published, and this book is, to me, the culmination of his work. I recommend it to everyone, bear fan or not!

5 out of 5 stars Essential, wonderful personal story, captivating photos.......2000-05-02

This is an essential book for polar bear and nature photography lovers alike. There are over 250 photos of polar bears, and arctic wildlife captured in the beautiful frozen world they live in.

I found the photography truly captivating. The adorable bears are shown splashing in the water, dancing, taking afternoon naps & wandering through the snow. There is even one of the mother making friends with a sled dog.

I was deeply touched by the many images of the cubs snuggling close to their mother. I found the other wildlife photos featuring many foxes and birds equally impressive. The captions for all the images are in the back of the book.

Along with the pictures, there is a wonderful story of a year in the life of a mother polar bear & her 2 cubs. The author switches pleasingly between factual accounts of the arctic world, folklore, & the personal story of the bear family.

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking, impressive photography of the arctic.......1998-12-30

Mangelsen has created an outstanding work of art that can be appreciated by polar bear lovers and nature lovers alike. The intentional ommission of captions until the end of the book allows the reader to view each photo as a work of art, absorbing the beauty and magic of each piece. It is an essential coffee table book for those intrigued and mystified by the polar bear, and strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys nature photography. A definite bargin in the world of nature photography books.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely stunning wildlife book.......1998-04-25

Polar Dance is in my opinion the most mind-blowing book on bears I have ever seen. I am an artist who works with faux fur, specializing in the creation of all species of bears. Polar Dance is the most treasured of all my wildlife books. The photographs of the ice bear taken so sensitively evokes my deepest emotions each time I turn the pages. I can almost feel the cold and snow out there on the Arctic. I reach for this book often for inspiration and even comfort. I never cease to be amazed at how beautifully Thomas Mangelsen has portrayed the "Tiger of the North". Certainly he has done justice to perhaps the most magnificent of God's creatures. Polar Dance is more than a book. It is a work of art.

Book Description

Noted weaver Lenore Tawny--now well into her 90s and still exhibiting her imaginative work--began creating postcard collages in the 1960s, sending them to friends and colleagues through the U.S. mail. A form of communication without specific messages, the cryptic notations were often enhanced by Tawney's handwriting. As Tawney explains the cards, "They were signs thrown to the wind." The selected postcard collages reveal the creative, mystical, and humorous side of the artist, giving the viewer an intimate glimpse into the personality of this most innovative woman.

Tawney is the recipient of the Visionary Award from the American Craft Museum, New York, 2000. Her works are found in the collections of the American Craft Museum; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Renwick Gallery; and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Montréal, Quebec.

96 pages, 83 color images and 6 black-and-white images; size: 8 x 8". Hardcover book with quarter binding. Essay by Holland Cotter, Art Critic, New York Times.

This book is so incredible. From an artist's point of view it is pure eye candy. Every page is art. Every page is stimulating. Every page is a new adventure. Colour and reproductions are so perfect, they look real. If you love assemblage art, nostalgia, exquisite and elegant collage, buy this small book, it's just gorgeous - a tip though - don't ever lend it! Di, Brisbane, Australia

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-07-20

I LOVED JUST LOOKING AT THIS BOOK. THE IMAGINATION OF THE WHIRIGIGS AT THE FRONT OF THE BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING. THEY WERE LIKE WORKS OF ART. THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE ONES YOU ACTUALLY MAKE ARE NOT THAT ELABORATE THOUGH. BUT IT GIVES YOU LOTS OF IDEAS FOR WHEN YOU GET REALLY GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars This is the easiest whirligig book to understand on the market!.......2005-07-20

I teach arts and crafts at a summer camp in the North Georgia mountains and am always looking for some fun, original folk art to do with the kids. After buying several other whirligig books on the market, I decided to buy this one, hoping it would be easier to understand. It was! Additionally, the photo gallery is phenominal. Whimsical works of art laughing in the breeze. If you are interested in building whirligigs, this would be the first book I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2001-11-28

This book is filled with good quality color pictures of many projects. It also explains how to make the complicated parts of wind toys. It tells what kinds of wood will hold up, and what kinds of wood will fail. It improved my whirligig designs greatly, and added many new ideas for my new ones. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Woodworking experience is helpful..........2001-07-27

I've had this book for a year and am finally making my first project (How the west was lost). IMHO you need to have some woodworking experience to do the projects other than the very simple ones. Making small parts is difficult on all but a scroll saw or bandsaw with a small blade. Step-by-step specific instructions are scarce. Still, I give this book 4 stars because I really like the projects. I also like being able to come up with my own colors and painting rather than paint by the numbers. I can tell you that the materials that they tell you to use for the mechanical parts are right on. Wire is just too flimsy from my experience. Use a photocopy machine to increase or decrease your pattern sizes. Use spray adhesive to stick the patterns on the wood and you'll get the size you want.

4 out of 5 stars Whirligigs: Imagination in motion.......2001-06-21

Here's a "how to" text that works! WHIRLIGIGS AND WEATHERVANES is beautifully formatted with rich bold photography, clean helpful graphics and clear textual instruction. After reading Paul Fleischman's WHIRLIGIG, I wanted my students to share the experience of the novel's protagonist, 16-year-old Brent Bishop, who must build four whirligigs. Brent finds a used book that gets him started. It's simple, clear and useful, and it provides the basic skills and knowledge Brent needs to create his own inspired inventions. I discovered WHIRLIGIGS AND WEATHERVANES while searching for a very similar title Fleischman used in his story - Make Your Own Whirligigs and Weathervanes - which just MAY be an invention inspired by Schoonmaker and Woods's text!) My husband and I are now finishing OUR first whirligig - "Soul of the Woodworker" - incorporating a profile of my husband's head and a silhouette of my left hand! Instructions are found on pp 44-5!

I just bought both boxed sets to give to my brother for his children. We both remember the books fondly from when Mom would read them to us when we were young.

My boxed set contained these books: Old Mother West Wind, Old Man Coyote, Prickly Porky, Bobby Raccoon, Johnny Chuck, Jimmy Skunk, and Jerry Muskrat.

5 out of 5 stars I love these books.......2007-03-28

As a child I read and loved the Burgess Book of Nature Lore. I wanted to give some of the same love of nature to my own daughter and found that Thornton W. Burgess had written many nature books for children. This particular set is a great starting off point for your young child. I love the way the author incorporates the description, habitat, and sound of many of the animals he is talking about. When your child hears these stories over and over they will be well on their way to discovering the natural world. When I read ""Mrs. Redwings Speckled Egg" to my daughter I have her hold her stuffed replica of a red wing black bird which actually makes the sound of the red wing black bird. It all comes to life for her. She is not quite three and she already is starting to identify different bird calls because these books give us the opportunity to talk about them. If you love nature and you have children you will love these books. Heck even if you don't have kids and are a kid at heart you will love these books.

5 out of 5 stars Much loved stories from my childhood.......2007-03-10

I loved these stories when I was a child. I would go to the library to get book after book. Now I am happy to give them to children I know and to discover that I still enjoy them. The author knew nature and he gave to all his animal characters the qualities that he found in nature. The blue jay is, of course, very loud and boisterous. Without really knowing it, I was learning to love and appreciate a variety of animals as I laughed at their antics in the stories.

5 out of 5 stars Old Mother West Wind and 6 Other Stories : The Adventures of.......2002-02-03

Any of Thorton W. Burgess's books are great reading for children. The stories are simple enough for children to relate to and will stimulate their imaginations as well as their appetite for books that are fun to read.

The downside of these books is that your children are probably going to want to read as many in the series as possible. Fortunately the prices at Amazon are reasonable and if you need to save some money you can take your children to the library where they will quickly memorize the location of books by Thorton W. Burgess.

4 out of 5 stars very suitable for young readers.......2000-03-31

Basically, I enjoyed the book a lot. The story is simple, but inspiring. The sentences repeats itself a lot, but as an adult, I still found it interesting. I think not only this book, but the whole series of this authur is a great for kids to read. The pictures in it is also kinda fun.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL CHRISTIANS!.......2007-09-05

This book is a must read by all Christians!!! Today, churches and bookstores (even Christian bookstores) are full of non-biblical, New Age ideas and authors that are doing a great job of leading believers off the narrow path and onto the wide path that leads to destruction. Brian Flynn does a great job of exposing the New Age practices and concepts that have infiltrated Christian theology. Not only does he give you his view (as a former New Ager), but he also gives the reader lots of examples, along with references, so that his statements can be verified. I couldn't put the book down! Fast and easy reading...Buy two or three so you can give copies to your friends!

5 out of 5 stars Jesus said many will be misled..........2007-06-07

Brian Flynn's background as an avid New Ager, then becoming a born-again Christian, makes what he has to say fascinating and eye-opening. He describes how Eastern spiritual practices and concepts are seriously spreading through the Church. He shows how they do not enhance the gospel of Jesus Christ, rather they oppose it and destroy. His logic is pointed and down-to-earth. For example, he says if Eastern prayer methods never brought a Hindu or Buddhist to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, then how could they bring a Christian closer to God? They will not. Instead we hear of Christians receiving revelations that all paths lead to God and God is in all! Brian also "names names", which has brought him rejection from some pastors. However, teachers can say so much that sounds Christian and "good", that one can assume the teacher is really OK unless they are named and the error specified. One teacher whose writings he discusses is Richard Foster, who was an instructor of mine while I attended George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon from 1975 -77. This was before his first book came out, "Celebration of Discipline". He was quite popular with the students and I liked him as well. I remember him leading our cass once in a guided imagery session. We were directed to picture ourselves traveling in our spirits above the clouds, meeting Jesus, and listening for Jesus' word to us. I felt a little uncomfortable, but I did do it. It seemed a little "weird" and unnecessary, so I never pursued it. It wasn't until years later when I read Dave Hunt's book, "Seduction of Christianity", that I realised something was actually wrong with it. Brian's book further clarifies how this is an unbiblical and very dangerous method of "prayer" to God. It is so easy to overlook error when it is mixed with Truth. It is easy to dismiss it as a mere disagreement than as the serious danger it is. I remember Foster's appeal in college being he wasn't stuffy, and he was a seeker for more of God. He certainly seemed Christian. He was thought-provoking, kindly and wanted our lives touched with the gospels. But I still should have evaluated his teaching by God's Word. We should do that with anyone's teaching! "Running Against the Wind" definitely helps us do that. King David Said, "From thy precepts I get understanding, therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:104,105.

1 out of 5 stars A warning to all spiritual aspirants.......2007-04-21

I am rather surprised at the lack of critical reviews of this book, so I will offer one of my own. My own experience is quite the opposite of Mr. Flynn's. I am a former fundamentalist Christian whose eyes were opened to the truth of the mystical, pluralistic path and the dangers of fundamentalism. Brian Flynn is a dangerous fanatic who seems bound and determined to bring out the worst in Christianity and to suppress everything positive the Christian tradition has to offer. He fails to realize that the true essence of Jesus' teachings is quite harmonious with eastern spiritual practices. He tirelessly advocates the futile attempt to know God on a purely intellectual level, while condemning as dangerous and demonic any effort to truly know God on an experiential level, as Jesus himself did. If you would like to read a book that more accurately represents the true teachings of Jesus, I would recommend Paramahansa Yogananda's "The Second Coming of Christ."

5 out of 5 stars Putting on the Armor of God.......2007-03-20

This former New Age leader found God as a witness and renounced his pagan ways. Now, in earnest, he is preaching what the New Age does not tell you ... and why Churches must do a "call to arms" and defend from within from pagans in the pews. This is a testimony to read and heed. The New Age is now mainsteam and the danger is real of spiritual tampering from the very people who claim to help lost souls.

Please read and use your own counsel but remember .... not all things of light are good for you.

Learn why some of the most popular writers on New Age, despite their seeming sweetness, will confuse you if you are not careful: such as Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, Sylvia Browne, and many others who portray themselves as guides for the weary.

5 out of 5 stars A Call to Arms.......2006-12-28

This book is a wake up call to Christians. The emergent church and purpose-driven movements are more dangerous than people realize. Like a disease, they are infecting Christendom with pagan rituals and preaching another gospel that varies drastically from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By telling his personal spiritual journey, Brian Flynn describes his encounters with the New Age and critical degrees of the paranormal, ultimately leading to his being born again in Jesus Christ. The emergent church has already infiltrated countless churches around the world; Flynn sounds the trumpet call to arms.

I originally became acquainted with this magical tale when my son checked it out from the public library about 20 years ago. Both of us fell in love with this wonderfully-told imaginative story, and each of us has gifted it to many young friends and family members over the years. It goes without saying that the illustrations, too, are a delight.

5 out of 5 stars The Life of a Mouse...Sort Of.......2007-03-05

Every time people see Alexander they scream or chase him, but all he wants are a few crumbs. Willy, on the other hand, another mouse, is loved and cuddled and cared for. That's because Willy is a toy, a wind-up mouse.

Well, Willy (the toy) and Alexander (the real mouse) happen to meet and each tell about their lives: a happy one for Willy, a frightening and lonely one for Alexander.

Luckily, he thinks, Alexander finds that with the help of some magic from a lizard he, too, can become a happy and loved wind-up mouse. But just in time something shocking happens to make him change his mind about turning into another Willy: Something happens to Willy. (Suitable for preschool through the primary grades.)

5 out of 5 stars So sweet.......2006-04-21

My son's grandma recently brought this book home from the library and we fell in love with it. It is a sweet and magical story about friendship. It was written in 1969 so I am glad to hear they have reissued it. My son is 3 and just loves it. The illustrations and text are lovely and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Learning self value through selflessness........2006-02-24

It is a timeless story of learning self value through selflessness and the joy that can be created from an act of selflessness. It is a sweet story that can teach children about these positive traits and remind adults not to forget about them in a very stress-driven world. My children love hearing this book read over and over again. And it is a delight to me to keep rereading it.

Hearts of the West are unburdened in Leaning into the Wind, an anthology encompassing a wealth of experiences from farmers, ranchers, rangers, and other women who live and work in America's ofttimes harsh, sometimes beautiful high plains states shoehorned between the Mississippi and the Rockies. A New York newspaper writer transplanted to a hog farm on the "baking brown plains" sees a sagging trailer, rubbish, and waist-high weeds where her exuberant husband sees only promise. Waking on a bed of sweet straw after sobbing hysterically, she finds "dozens of piglets curled around me, nestled against my hips, tucked under my outspread arms, piled like a halo around my head." Other contributors wax poetic, describing an old pickup truck that "wanders down the road like a drunken goose" or steam coming off a newborn lamb in the chill night air. The selections tend toward rough-edged and gritty, but all are heartfelt.

Book Description

In the true stories, essays, and poems of Leaning into the Wind we meet the real women of the High Plains today. Included are reflections on cowboys, tractor-driving lessons, outhouses, ranch marriages, and family legacies.

4 out of 5 stars Not just in the West! .......2007-02-22

This book was given to me by a friend, when I was laid up for three months due to a riding accident. Most people don't know it - but hearty women like the ones referenced in these stories are still alive and well and working today. My hats off to you ladies - because the computer and cell phone era don't change a thing when it comes to getting up cattle, riding herd and fixing fence, feeding stock, even when you are not well. The work still has to be done. Livestock know no sick days!

Very well written. The stories were short, sweet, touching, informative. They tugged on your heart. They made your imagination kick in. They made you appreciate (or should have made you appreciate) what you live with today. I think women truly bear the soul of the earth. It made me laugh, and cry.

4 out of 5 stars Leaning into the Wind .......2006-04-11

If you are interested in life in the western United States during the first half of the twentieth century, you will want this book. The same is true if you enjoy stories of how women coped and mastered the challenges of life in rural America. The memoirs and poems contributed by over 200 women are also of sufficient literary value to warrant attention. There are tales of fun, loss, adventure, sadness, achievement, and the fullness of life. It is a great book to keep on your end table, reading a few pages at a time and masticating on them before nibbling off another morsel. A capsule biography for each contributor is a tremendous addition. Reading this book is enormous fun. Be aware that the editors of "Leaning into the Wind" followed it with "Woven on the Wind" and you will want both of them

4 out of 5 stars Loved most of it.......1999-03-18

It got a bit repetitive though - I mean, ALL those stories of calving were a bit excessive. I bought this book during my first visit to the High Plains last week on my spring break in South Dakota. I enjoyed most of the stories - I didn't think they were all particularly and equally wonderful, but with so many writings you will have likes and dislikes. I did wish, however, that I could talk to some of these women and let them know that not all vegetarians and animal-rights activists hate ranchers. We're not all hippy-dippy airheads who don't know the real story of animal farming - the hard work and even love that goes into the raising of animals. It's just a difference of opinion regarding the sanctity of _all_ life. I felt attacked, quite a few times, while reading this book. Overall though, there were very inspiring stories and quotable quotes - "Pay a holy kind of attention" !!! Loved that one.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-wrenching, yet inspiring; history with soul........1998-05-07

To start this book is to start a trip into one's own past. Whether we now live in the country or in a city, many of the stories told here are within our own familys' histories; I can feel my own German immigrant grandparents, farming on the plains of Eastern Colorado, within these pages.

The sheer eloquence of these plains women - their poetry and tales - tells much of the strength of the human spirit. I wept with them as they tell of the rigors of drought and the Depression; laughed with them as they tell of childish pranks; and prayed with them as they lived through weather we can only imagine today, snugged, cocooned, and protected as we are from the elements.

I would wish every high school American history teacher would include this in their curriculum. To have history not only educate, but entertain, is a rare treat. It is our roots that make us strong - just as the wheat that grows upon these same high plains.

The format is outstanding for its message: short essays and poems. One can chew off just as much as is right at any one time, without feeling that the tale has been interrupted. The eloquence of these prairie women, the beauty of their imagery, was a constant delight - even when their eloquence was manifested purely by sheer simplicity.

5 out of 5 stars As real as the western women who inhabit the land.......1997-12-06

As a ranch woman who lived many years in South Dakota, the anthology truly amazes me for its capacity to speak clearly about the heart and souls of plainswomen. The women wrote their stories with passion that credits the authenticity of their varied subjects. The authors exposed the west in black and white, yet showed the gray complexities. The land, as one writer said, holds you in a way nothing else can. The reader learns that an appreciation and respect for the land is paramount if one is to cope with extreme weather, cyclical income--often below the cost of doing business, relationships made uneasy by common community knowledge of generations living in the same place. Individuality, as shown by the diverseness of the authors' experiences, is the key to holding one's own in an oftimes hostle environment. Truly the weak don't survive. "Leaning..." shows the strength and fortitude necessary for life on the high plains and also the compassion brought on by the witnessing of a prairie in bloom, an astonishing star lit sky or the newborn's arrival. One sees clearly the growth that can come from intimate association with life and death. The honesty of life is on every page.
