Book Description

The critically acclaimed, beloved, and bestselling author of The Club Dumas and The Nautical Chart delivers his most magniÞcent novel to date.

Few authors inspire the kind of passion that Arturo Pérez-Reverte does. Reviewers, readers, and booksellers alike have embraced his fiction as the perfect blend of suspense and literary ambition. A global bestseller, he is one of the most admired and widely read authors in the world. And his stunning new novel is his best yet.

A remarkable tale, The Queen of the South spans continents, from the dusty streets of Mexico to the sparkling waters off the coast of Morocco, to Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar. A sweeping story set to the irresistible beat of the drug smugglers' ballads, it encompasses sensuality and cruelty, love and betrayal, as its heroine's story unfolds.

Teresa Mendoza's boyfriend is a drug smuggler who the narcos of Sinaloa, Mexico, call "the king of the short runway," because he can get a plane full of coke off the ground in three hundred yards. But in a ruthless business, life can be short, and Teresa even has a special cell phone that Guero gave her along with a dark warning. If that phone rings, it means he's dead, and she'd better run, because they're coming for her next.

Then the call comes.

In order to survive, she will have to say goodbye to the old Teresa, an innocent girl who once entrusted her life to a pinche narco smuggler. She will have to find inside herself a woman who is tough enough to inhabit a world as ugly and dangerous as that of the narcos-a woman she never before knew existed. Indeed, the woman who emerges will surprise even those who know her legend, that of the Queen of the South.

4 out of 5 stars Just finished the audio book-15 CDs.......2007-08-31

I enjoyed this audiobook. My only complaint about the book is that some of the descriptions about the drug deals and boats on the water is long and so descriptive, that it's hard to follow. The book is also very long and at times moves a bit slow. But still overall I enjoyed it and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantistic!!!.......2007-08-22

Another gerat novel from Arturo Perez-Reverte!!! Wow, is all I can say. This book was too real to be ficticious, I felt like I was there. Another book that I just couldn't put down. Thanks and I look forward to the movie!!!

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating to read!.......2007-07-22

I did not like this book and had an extremely difficult time finishing it. It is not well written and it is hard to follow. The subject matter is disgusting, throughout the entire book. I gave it to my sister and she couldn't finish it. I would not waste my money on this book. If you are a fan of the author, buy it used and try to wade through it. Be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed!

1 out of 5 stars I kept waiting,,,,,,,.......2007-07-06

I kept waiting for the book to get better, the story just kept going, seem as though she was trying to replace her first boyfriend? trying to take control? you'd think at some point she would have learn and the unnecessary droning details((aarghh!! ) I read all the other reviews, are we reading/listening to the same book? and the spanish!!!!! arrghhhhh! The best part about the book is when she left Mexico( can you imagine the readers expectation, "its really going to get good now", and it went down hill from there.

4 out of 5 stars Well Written with Uneven Plot & Characters.......2007-03-12

This is not Perez-Reverte's best novel, rather it reads more like an homage to the rags-to-riches story and the Al Pacino movie Scarface. There are two narrators in the book - the supposed "author" of a book on the main character and then the impartial, 3rd-party narrator - and the story switches back and forth between them. And this highlights two weaknesses of the book: the characters are all well-sketched, but aside from the main character, Teresa Mendoza, none are filled in; and then the unevenness of the plotting - at several points the story is rapid-fire and well done, and then at others, you'll find yourself skimming paragraphs.

I would've liked more of the characters to be fleshed out; I found myself wanting to know more about the "author" of the book on Teresa while I related less and less to Teresa - the more powerful she grows, the less likable she becomes and I wondered where that came from.

That said, the book has a number of incredibly well-written passages, including a single paragraph on a suicide that is so sharp and precise that you will remember it far more than you'll remember the book's ending.

Princess Red Bird, 16-year-old daughter of the Hsien king in 6th century Southern China, has been born into a world of dispute and violence. When she is sent to a Chinese colony to be educated, she must contend with the disdainful attitudes of her hosts, who consider the Hsien to be savages, even as both the Chinese and the Hsien are at constant risk of attack from the truly savage neighboring people, the Dog Heads. In reality, the princess is a fair and wise leader, even at a young age, with a brilliant mind for military stratagems. Her leadership skills are put to the test when war breaks out and the Dog Heads begin to move in.

Prolific Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep (Dragon's Gate) contributes a remarkable tale to the Royal Diaries series. This fictionalized account of the real-life princess will introduce young readers to a long-ago land with a fascinating culture and edge-of-seat adventures, and will certainly inspire some to delve deeper into Chinese history. As in all the titles in the series, a section in the back provides context and historical background. (Ages 8 to 14) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Informative.......2007-01-12

I purchased this book for my children who are interested in Chinese history. I found it to be well written and engaging. While a child would need to be around nine or ten to really try reading this alone, it is still enjoyable for school age children, though parents should remember that this does contain some violence and may upset younger readers, so it would be a good idea to preview it or read along if you think your child might need to discuss some of these events.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic addition to the Royal Diary series!!!.......2005-07-16

Princess Redbird is a 15 year old princess of the Hsien tribe. The Hsiens are thought as 'savages' among all the other tribes in China. They are constantly at war and Redbird misses her father who so often cancels special occasions for his wars throughout China with his opponent 'The Dog Heads' an evil militia. The time is A.D. 531 and Redbird wants to become part of her father's royal council as her brother has. Instead, her parents set her up at the chinese colony, away from her precious home at Kingfisher Hill. Princess Redbird writes about her times at Kingfisher Hill, celebrations she's celebrated and how one day she hopes to inherit the Hsien throne. A gift that has never been casted down on a woman. Redbird lives a sleepy and lazt life until she learns that her school has set aflame with all the people inside it! Redbird must rise to the challenge and prove herself the true warrior of the south.

5 out of 5 stars Long but interesting.......2005-04-05

When I first got this book I expected bamboo, chopsticks, honorable monks and all that other stereotype Chinese stuff. But I saw that life in sixth century China was not that way. The Chinese were beyond bamboo but the Hsien people to the south weren't. The Hsien who lived in Southern China at the time lived a peaceful life in the forests until the jealous Dog Heads (who I think were from India or Vietnam) came and the Chinese help them. The Hsien send their Princess Red Bird to become a liasion and makes a clever plan to defeat the Dog Head Elephants. This Clever Book-loving Princess records in Five Scrolls her life living with her Father the king and then later her brother King Little Tiger who was a royal pain like this other Chinese rich colonist girl who ends up living with Red Bird. But I think lot's of kids who love books can relate to Princess Red Bird. I hope you like it as much as I have.

1 out of 5 stars Lady of Ch'iao Kuo book review.......2004-10-27

We had to read this book for class and I thought it was one of the worst books I ever read! I do not recommend it for you to read. It is very boring!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-04-07

When I first read this book I thought, how boring, it's just a bunch of rambling about war and junk. Well I decided I'd give it another chance and I think it's fabulous. I guess that now that we are caught up in a war ourselves I can really relate to what she is saying. This book has humor, action, adventure, and really corrosponds to what is happening in the world today. I reccomend this book to everyone and encourage those of you who disliked it at first to give it a secound chance.

In the heart of central Kentucky Bluegrass country, Lexington boasts a long, proud history reaching far back before this “Horse Capital of the World” reared its first thoroughbred. Early Lexingtonians built an intellectual and economic center from their frontier outpost and quickly claimed the first college, newspaper, and millionaire west of the Alleghenies—among many other firsts.

I wouldn't be a true historian if I didn't say I have lots of questions after reading Ms. Hollingsworth's book. But, that's a sign of a good writer...leaving your reader wanting more. The writing style is engaging and is based on some unique and comprehensive sources. This book is all you need to read to know the real story of Lexington.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, beautifully written and such a treat to read.......2004-12-30

Since the Wright book about Lexington appeared in the 1980's I have been hoping for a more extensive, up-to-date history of the town in which I grew up. This is it. Ms. Hollingsworth is a gifted writer. Her lively, articulate and entertaining account of Lexington from its earliest days to the present left me aching for more. She has obviously thoroughly researched an enormous quantity of primary sources in writing it and I have visions of bulging files somewhere that she will see fit to use to expand and broaden her story. This was one book I wanted to go on forever. I made the mistake of starting it at bedtime and finding myself unable to put it down. It is so rich in history and local color that I found myself reading very slowly when I am normally a fast reader. I didn't want go miss a thing. Of course, I'm sure I will re-read it within a month or so and use it as a reference forever.

    Book Description

A rare, exotic portrait of the matriarchs of a brilliant Indian family

Ranging from the final days of the Raj and the British Empire to the present, Lucy Moore vividly re-creates a splendid lost world and describes India's national growing pains through the sumptuous, audacious lives of four ravishing, influential women of the same family—Sunity Devi, friend to Queen Victoria; Chimnabai, fierce nationalist; Indira, her flamboyant daughter; and Ayesha, her equally fashionable daughter—who fought tirelessly and with incomparable grace to turn an ancient tradition of noblesse oblige into a progressive democracy. BACKCOVER: “Scintillating. Moore revels in every detail—from the elegance of the maharanis' attire, to the complexities of Indian family life and politics, to the trauma and heroism of breaking with tradition.”

4 out of 5 stars An incredibly fascinating book.......2007-07-08

I grew up in Baroda and never knew the extent of its royal history until I read it in this book. It is a lovely story of four amazing women who ruled kingdoms, married men who frequently cheated, had children and even watched them die. I kept reading and reading and got swept up into their world....worlds of glamor, decadence and tragedy. I was glued to the family trees and the photos throughout. The book is all history and is not fiction and that is what makes it great...everything we read is as real as it gets. Moore has painstakingly researched the novel and it shows in every page. My only complaint was the skipping back and forth in time got a little confusing....but still a great novel!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Maharanis at large!.......2005-09-18

Moore delves into the backgrounds, personalities and personal relationships of these four fascinating Indian Maharanis (all blood-connected to the great Gayatri Devi) in such a fresh way that it is a pleasure to read. Full of anecdotes (I loved the stories about "Ma", the Maharani of Cooch Behar). I devoured the whole book in a trans-pacific flight!
A shame Moore did not publish more family pictures in the book!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating journey to the bygone days.........2005-02-23

This is an excellent book that takes one back to the fascinating dusk of the glorious days of Indian Royals. Lucy Moore writes in her fluid style the story of four Maharani's all the way back from mid 1800s till now. The book gives an unique peek into the dual lives of Maharanis in their zenanas and the high society of Europe. Must read for subcontinental history buffs.

1 out of 5 stars True? Maybe, but it's still garbage........2007-09-24

I won't waste anyone's time arguing about whether or not this book is true. I wasn't there, I've never met Ms. Page, and I therefore have no idea about which version of events is correct.

I will quote the book from its introduction: "I know Bettie doesn't want her secret past revealed, but I opted for the truth."

    ...What?

This man that dares to call himself a journalist thinks he has the right to air Bettie's dirty laundry? He thinks it's okay to humiliate and hurt her because, what, he's a fan? I guess by that logic it's okay if I look into his life and told the world about (hypothetically--obviously I don't know Richard Foster anymore then Bettie Page) his erectile dysfunction or the way he beats his kids. Everyone has skeletons in their closet. What makes it his right to reveal them?

Real journalists put themselves out on a limb to expose stories that are important. This horrible person who decided to ruin Bettie, profit off of it and then justify himself by saying it was for her own good doesn't deserve to call himself anything but a garbage spewing vulture. Whether the information is true or not makes no difference; what matters is that Bettie didn't want him to tell, and as the information in this book is in no way important to anyone's life Foster had no right to tell it.

I stopped reading the book right after the introduction and threw it away, and I suggest you do the same.

2 out of 5 stars rank but revealing.......2007-06-10

As others have clearly opined, this is a juvenile and cliched bit of writing ....that Bettie's lost past is revealed is what it is... she lives in a group home for the mentally ill with regular meetings with a psychologist.....(at the time of this writing 1996) as others including her brother jockey for her rights and profits is....well the under belly of the american dream...what would be of worth is a biography that is based on her and others remembrance of what she did, how she felt and her dreams or thoughts....there is no depth here , some fact, many assumptions. However we are not going to get any reliable information from a very lost woman who must be visited by a case worker every week....there is no amount of money or fame that can change that fact....may she find some peace if not in this lifetime but the next...and as a footnote....why would anyone make assumptions about a person they see in a photograph?

4 out of 5 stars Bettie Page Uncovered.......2005-11-14

A very sad tale of a woman broken by her fame and tortured by her problems. Wonderful pictures of Bettie in her prime and overall a very good book. I will agree that it is written in a tabloid style -it's not war and peace but it is a good read about an american icon.

1 out of 5 stars READ NO MORE REVIEWS, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE YOU NEED TO READ- A PATHETIC AUTHOR MAKES UP CRAP ABOUT BETTIE.......2005-10-23

This is the only reveiwer who can seriously keep it real for any of you potential buyers of this Bettie Page book. Everything in this book is horribly written, and ENTIRELY made up, it is EXTREMELY easy to see that, just look at the sample (if they still have it, if not, don't dish out a single penny of yours for this book, it's not worth it in any way.)For any of you idiots who believe this stuff- GET A LIFE!! This book actually wants you to beleive that at some point in the recent years of her life she-having made millions and million of dollars from her career, and still making money from her legacy- is so poor that she moves in with some stranger to room with in a tiny house, and out of the blue trys to kill her roommate one night because she's so crazy now? That is THE biggest load of crap I have ever heard. This book is not worth anyone even considering buying. All it is is media hype (that was never in the real media, might I add) that some sad pathetic liar poor excuse for an author who doesn't even know how to write past a fourth grade level wants you to believe! If any of this crap was true, don't you think it would be easy to track down Bettie in the real media and expose her on tv and in newspapers?? The only place you will ever hear any of this stuff is in this horribly written, made up pile of lies. It's a waste of time to read this book, and anyone who believes this crap is almost as pathetic and in need of A LIFE as the author is. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK THAT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A WAY TOO LONG TABLOID WRITTEN BY A FOURTH GRADER!!

4 out of 5 stars All too human Bettie Page.......2005-08-31

I used to see Bettie's picture nearly everywhere : magazines, books, albums... I knew about her and always thought "that's too much, she's too beautiful, a female jaguar with black hair, perfect face, perfect body"... This book shows the very human side of Bettie page and I was immediately drawn to her as a human being. This book showed me that she was all human and struggling to make it in Hollywood - but she stood her ground and did not fall prey to the infamous casting couch.
It's a beautiful and sad story at the same time. Can't wait to see a film about her.

    Book Description

Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena collects a bevy of wise, witty, often hilarious essays by the inimitably charming, staunchly Southern Julia Reed.

In classic Dixie storytelling fashion, Reed wends her way through the South—from politics, religion, and women to weather, pestilence, guns, and what she calls “drinking and other Southern pursuits”—with a rare blend of literary elegance and plainspoken humor.

To hear Reed tell it, the South is another country. She builds an entertaining and persuasive case, using as examples everything from its unfathomable codes of conduct to its disciplined fashion sense. When a bemused Reed once commented on the cross-dressing get-ups of an upstanding community member, her austere grandfather said, “He’s been wearing them lately. Now come on.” A friend of her aunt’s merely said, “I wonder where he gets his shoes. I can’t ever ?nd good-looking shoes in Nashville.”

Southern food, of course, is an entire world apart: gumbo, grits, greens, okra, chess pie, Lady Baltimore cake, and Frito chili pie make memorable appearances in Reed’s stories, which will amuse, delight, and even explain a thing or two to baffed Yankees everywhere.

    2 out of 5 stars Gosh durn, ain't I a clever girl..........2005-08-14

By now, is there anyone alive who doesn't know Southern men like their guns, while their women like big hair and wear lots of makeup? Judging by this mundane ( the nth Scarlett O'Hara deconstruction), repetitious collection of vignettes (see the German model story), there is truly nothing new under the southern sun. The recipes ( except for the frozen tomato - and who would really serve that?) are familiar. Sure, it is a comfort to know that in the South losing one's mind isn't all that big a deal. It also helps to have housemen, plus maids and cooks to fry up all that great chicken, raise up the kids and allow that steel magnolia (what else?) grandma to keep looking so immaculate while doing years of exhaustive note-taking at the "closed" Belle Meade Country Club - and Julia and friends attend a "racist" boarding school.

We know there really are wonderful cooks and writers to experience in the female South. For fun and style in writing, Florence King was there first. Her books are much more satisfying.

3 out of 5 stars Color me ambivalent.......2005-06-12

There's plenty of laugh-out-loud fodder in this little book of short essays. Nothing is quite as funny as the human condition, observed and considered. At this, the author excells.

What astonished me was that I turned the last page of the book with the realization that race seemed to be completely omitted from the narrative, except where one could infer the presence of a non-white in the kitchen or as a maid. For a book of the 21st century, this is beyond startling to me. A subtitle of "Other (White) Southern Phenomena" might have been more on point.

Consider some of the topics. I know that debutantes, for instance, are not only white girls, but the writing about debs and their parties and their season is about a particular kind of girl whose lineage goes back to before -- well, you know. Think about the ubiquity of queens in places like Mississippi and Alabama and the picture that will come to your mind is not one of diversity. If the author's country club experience includes a racially integrated membership, this certainly would have happened not only in her lifetime, but probably since she has become an adult. But there's no mention of that reality, only of a particular kind of food available to those privileged few -- though I suppose that the included recipes purport to allow us to elevate our experience.

The essay about Scarlett O'Hara goes some distance toward explaining what it is so many white women find so endearing about Scarlett: her pluck, her determination, her sauciness. It overlooks entirely that Scarlett, even in Margaret Mitchell's rarified imagination, did not save herself without a "mammy". I don't get Gone With the Wind and probably never will. What I got from the essay was a point of view blessedly or infuriatingly disconnected from decades of social criticism.

The adage that people who like this sort of thing will probably like this seems quite apt. If you are interested in a funny, fairly unnuanced view of the upper-middle class white experience of a Southern woman born in 1960, here's your book.

5 out of 5 stars So real I kept thinking I was reading about my own life.......2005-02-14

Wow, where do I start? I read this book in one sitting and laughed and cried while I was at it. Being from Arkansas myself, I cannot tell you how many times I have heard, "What would people think?" It was a mantra in my household, particularly when I was trying to do something as outrageous as leaving the house without lipstick. I turned about every other page over to show my husband later, so he would understand me better!

I felt Ms. Reed presented both sides of the South well... the backward (and oft times embarrassing) ways, and the strong traditions and attitudes that make a real (positive) difference in a person's life. I bought it for my mom and her three sisters, as I knew they would laugh as hard as I did at how she nailed so many aspects of Southerners. I've also given this book to several young women, as I think it portrays the strength of Southern women. Ms. Reed finally gave me a way of explaining to blue-state Northerners (where I live now) why I'm so proud of being Southern.

2 out of 5 stars Not so funny..........2005-01-05

Well, having recently finished Celia Rivenbark's 'We're Just Like You Only Prettier', which was very amusing, I figured this book would be similar to that one. The reviews said it was very humorous, and entertaining. I'm sorry, but I do not agree. Julia Reed is a Vogue writer living in New York City, but she's from Mississippi. Now, I felt that at times when describing the silly ways of the southern women's traditions, it was almost like she was making fun of them. But then when she would bash the Yankees (which I happen to be, and am darn proud of it) she was all for her southern heritage.

I love southern books, and I've always had this fascination with the south. I truly hope one day to live there when my husband retires. I have always admired southern women, their traditions, their tight family bonds, and the land itself. Ms. Reed made these women sound ditsy, and shallow, while making us Yankees sound like ignorant, clueless slobs. And she made the area (the south) sound like pure hell to live in.

I gave this 2 stars because there were some interesting facts in it, and some of the events that go on down there were really neat to learn about, and all the food she talked about, sounds delicious! But overall I'd just like to forget this book. It has in no way changed my opinion of southern men and women, or the south itself, and I can only hope they don't look at the Yankees the same way Julia Reed does. If you're looking for a funny book on the 'ways of the south', pick up Ms. Rivenbarks book, that one won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect balance..........2004-08-22

I have been looking for a book like this for some time. If the "GRITS" series took it all a little too seriously for you, then pick up "Queen of the Turtle Derby" (this is a true 'you cant put it down' title). I was delighted to find a fellow southerner/ part-time new orleanian in love with the gulf coast, in love with the south, the food, the people, but with a sense of humor about it (doesnt being a southerner revolve around a sense of humor in the first place?). This is the book for the girl who choose NOT to be a debutante but who still holds a very special place in her heart for those who were. Its the book for those who grew up steeped in this culture, and possibly even rejected it at some point, but who realized later in life how much it is a part of who you are and now accept it with open arms, ready to laugh at any minute. Its incredibly smart, funny, and filled with unforgettable stories about friends, family, guns, booze, debs, food and pagents. Reed is an incredible writer and after enjoying her articles for years, I can only hope that there is a second book on the way. And she is welcome to parade in mobile anytime as the catfish queen!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-09-22

My bible of Royal British successions for almost 20 years, I keep it at my elbow for constant reference. A wonderful thumbnail sketch of each King and Queen, as well as a snapshot of the times in which they lived and the causes of their sucesseses and failures. Great reading--beautifully illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice book -- just what I was looking for!.......2006-08-29

I read this book cover to cover just prior to my trip to England (along with Antonia Fraser's "The Lives of the Kings & Queens of England"). This was a fun and easy read with nice pitcures. It is nice for anyone looking for a brief overview about the English Monarchy and also for anyone who just wants to have a handy reference.

    5 out of 5 stars A great buy........2002-10-25

I bought this book many years ago, and I still pick it up at least once a month. The book gives you the most important information of every king and queen who has ever ruled England or Scotland.

As I turn the pages, I can see that there is something interesting about every regent, and by the way; this book makes you realize that royal scandals are not a new invention.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent British Royalty Review.......2001-03-24

I have now read through this book twice - once before each of my trips to Great Britain - and have found this book to be immensely helpful in understanding Britain's past and present. The book purports to be about the British monarchy, but in addition to thoroughly covering royalty, this book also covers a fair amount of history so the reader has some feel for the cultural setting of the monarchs as well. There are numerous color illustrations and photographs throughout the text, finely placed, and quite instructive. Each monarch has typically 2-4 pages devoted to their reign, with important dates and events set out in an easy to consult style. Some attempt is made to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each ruler and to assess how the British peoples fared under their guidance. In general, the presentation is fair-minded, following Shakespeare's dictum to comment on each ruler as s/he appeared, "nothing extenuant, nor aught set down in malice."

There are periodically pages devoted to related topics such as the origins of Parliament, the Magna Carta, Chivalrous Orders (such as the Order of the Garter), War of the Roses, coronation of the Prince of Wales, castle construction (explaining terms like motte and bailey), or Empire Building. Events such as the 1381 Peasants Revolt, the 1666 Fire of London, or the Great Exhibition of 1851 (sharing scientific advancements from the Industrial Revolution) are richly illustrated, with commentary provided to explain their significance.

The Kings of Scotland are discussed separately, with historical figures like Robert the Bruce or William Wallace being treated in the narratives. Eventually, the Scottish and English/Welch monarchies converged with with the coronation of James I in 1603.

In all, Plantagenet Somerset Fry has done an absolutely first rate job of creating an introductory book on the British Monarchy. I found it quite helpful in keeping things straight in my mind (e.g. keeping all the Edward's and Henry's and George's distinct.) It is an excellent book to read either for pleasure, for instruction, or for historical guidance while touring the British Isles.

    4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!.......1999-02-04

I use this book as a quick reference to all things royal in England & Scotland. It is full of beautiful color photos and very well-crafted.

" The Sunburnt Queen is an extraordinary narrative. The writing's fresh immediacy brings history to life."- The Sunday Independent (South Africa)

In the late 1730s, the local inhabitants of South Africa found a seven-year-old girl called Bessie, washed ashore on the beach of the Wild Coast. Bessie was brought up by them, growing into a young woman of legendary beauty and wisdom, and marrying one of the most important tribal chiefs in the area.

Using oral histories and written accounts by early missionaries, Hazel Crampton traces the extraordinary story of Bessie and the turbulent history of the Eastern Cape.
